Game day: UNLV

By Stephen Tsai on September 17, 2011

LAS VEGAS — The Warriors made too many mistakes and not enough plays in the 40-20 loss to UNLV. They lost opportunities with the four lost fumbles, including three in a row to open the third quarter. And UNLV’s Phillip Payne had another big night against the UH secondary. Team returns early Sunday. The work begins shortly after. * * * * * LAS VEGAS — The longest road trip of the season ends with tonight’s game against UNLV. It […]

Vegas hideaway; telecast info

By Stephen Tsai on September 16, 2011

LAS VEGAS — As part of their usual road schedule, the Warriors will have a walk-through practice this afternoon at Sam Boyd Stadium. After that, any additional work will be addressed at the Warrior complex. UH has managed to create an atmosphere in which the players are sequestered for most of the day. Headquarters is the hotel’s spacious second floor, where the Warriors have access to a fitness center and pool. One large room has been turned into an equipment […]

Dry run

By Stephen Tsai on September 15, 2011

SUMMERLIN — For the first time this week, the Warriors did not wake up to a storm. And that is fine for the Warriors, who had ideal conditions — a dry run, so to speak — for their final full practice before Saturday’s game against UNLV. Of note: • There were four NFL scouts at today’s practice. • Tyler Hadden will handle all of the place-kicking duties. • Although Terence Bell has practiced with the first team the past three […]

Desert storm

By Stephen Tsai on September 14, 2011

SUMMERLIN — Another day, another storm. Somehow the weather that was supposed to be experienced in Seattle last week has made its way to Las Vegas and its suburbs. The Warriors practiced today for 2 hours, with most of the workout in the rain. But they were able to put in the finishing touches on their offense and tighten a new defensive scheme. * * * * * Right slotback Miah Ostrowski still was wearing a medical boot, but he […]

Tuesday in the Desert

By Stephen Tsai on September 13, 2011

• Right tackle Sean Shigematsu  will undergo season-ending knee surgery. • Levi Legay was the No. 1 right tackle during today’s 2-hour practice at Bishop Gorman High School. •  And, yes, readers are correct. Dana White, UFC president, is a major donor for Bishop Gorman. •  Right slotback Miah Ostrowski’s right foot was in a walking boot. He said X-rays did not show any fracture. He hopes to play Saturday. • If Ostrowski can’t go, Terence Bell or Corey Paclebar […]

Looking ahead

By Stephen Tsai on September 11, 2011

The Warriors will be given a day off today, as mandated by the NCAA, but the coaches will study videos and finalize the game plan for Saturday’s game against UNLV.  No rest for coaches seeking a split of this two-game road trip. * * * * * In memory of 9/11, the Husky Marching Band came up with this design. Note the use of the brass section at the top of the “flag pole” Husky Marching Band formed the H […]

Washington 40, UH 32

By Stephen Tsai on September 10, 2011

SEATTLE — Tough loss for the Warriors, who fell behind 21-0, rallied, but eventually lost to Washington, 40-32. After the game: • The coaches said they would address the protection problems on PAT attempts. Two were blocked, with one returned all the way for a two-point play that changed the final-minute strategy. • Right tackle Sean Shigematsu might return to Honolulu for an MRI on his injured knee. Levi Legay is the immediate backup, although there are thoughts about sending […]

Walk-through

By Stephen Tsai on September 9, 2011

SEATTLE — The Warriors conducted a 1-hour walk-through at Husky Stadium today. But that was merely for show. They returned to the hotel in Bellevue, then conducted a practice in two ballrooms. Here are pictures from today’s field trip: * * * * * The Husky Mobile: * * * * * Grumble all you want about Aloha Stadium, but UW fans have to sit on Husky Stadium’s wooden bleachers: * * * * * Give UW credit for thinking […]
