Looking ahead

The Warriors will be given a day off today, as mandated by the NCAA, but the coaches will study videos and finalize the game plan for Saturday’s game against UNLV.  No rest for coaches seeking a split of this two-game road trip.

Here is the Seattle Times article about the game. Its mostly about their qb Keith Price who came in with questions but had a hell of game – especially in the first quarter. He says the defense was brought in and he was able to throw over it.

One snap and clear. UH should beat UNLV by a large margin and it will be great to see in person.

In my preseason prediction for hwnstln, I predicted that UH would go 11-2 during the regular season, with one of the losses being at U-Dub. If that prediction comes true, that would be a great season for UH…especially since I think this is the year that Mack will win his first bowl game as head coach (over SMU).

UH will be in the Hawaii Bowl. No BCS Bowl scenario now and (in my opinion) no way that UH doesn’t qualify for a bowl. Hopefully UH will be WAC champions and Hawaii Bowl champions…that would be a nice way to leave the WAC.

I hope the coaches are looking a the dept chart in rotating players? Couple plays go a long way in keeping fresh legs on the field.

1420 has to review that broadcasts of the Washington game.

It was terrible. Can’t get any worse than that.

First BC’s audio is muffled. The clarity was off. This problem existed throughout the game. Why didn’t somebody back at the station tell him?

Not unless I missed it. I have no clue as to who the starters were on defense.

Someone on the other blog wrote that the defense came out with nickle defense. That’s news to me because listening to the radio broadcast I’m left in the dark.

From listening to their broadcast I have no idea of what defense UH is in–4-3, 3-4, elephant, nickle, dime, or quarter.

From listening to their broadcast I have no idea who was covering the TE Jenkins, who caught the two long passes in the first quarter–50+, 40+ yarder. That info I want to know when I’m listening to a broadcast.

From listening to the broadcast I want to hear description of what adjustments the defense was making. In the second half the UH defense gives up less than a 100 yards…okay, describe to me what the defense is doing differently in the second half. But nope, I guess, that’s beyond their ability.

After listening to this broadcast I honestly think that RK made BC look good.

At least if I were listening to RK he would have been insightful…doing color with a coaches perspective.. For example he would say how the defense is countering UW’s 3 TE look. What players go where, who’s covering Jenkins etc.

These guys doing the game yesterday–disappointment. Fry an egg on my head time. And to make matters worse BC’s last five minutes of the game was absent of any optimism imo. Seemed to me like he wrote UH off, and was already looking at the UNLV game….the message BC conveys, “at least UH had a go showing blah, blah, blah and to me the game is still in question, UH still has chance, and BC’s reading eulogy. Come on. That’s bad.

    Aloha and good morning everyone-

I am in awe and deeply humbled of the very Freedom that affords me to partake in such a simple fruit as sharing a victory or defeat of a football game on a blog amongst friends.

Today, kindly pause for a moment to reflect on an event that has forever changed each and every one of our lives. Observe loved ones, family, friends, who’s lives were tragically lost 10 years ago today. Respect the many more that have since been lost. Honor those who continue to preserve of the Freedom we have that so many in our world strive for.

  30. LizKauai (iPad) September 11, 2011 6:58 am

From my facebook friend Roya Bauman:

On this day… Let’s also not forget that the hijackers of the airplanes on Sept. 11 started out as innocent children who didn’t know how to hate. As children, they weren’t filled with the prejudice of their traditions, religion, country. They were “Spiritual souls! Tender souls! The hearts of all children are of the utmost purity. They are mirrors upon which no dust has fallen.” Children have to be taught to hate; it is our job to make sure they are not.

God Bless and let us train our children to be warrior peacemakers on earth!

    Ask yourself, ” Am I a September 10 person, or a September 11 ?

    personally, I am the latter.

My overall perspective changed that very day on the 11th, and view more now through a prism of what happened that day.

    Never forget.

Go Warriors. Train hard and play hard. Winners don’t compromise.

  33. kkobi425 September 11, 2011 7:22 am

Wonder what the spread will be for this weeks game. Looking for the offense to click and light it up. Look what the WSU qb did to the rebel defense.

Lobbestael finished 24 of 32 for 361 yards and five touchdowns, and the Cougars outgained UNLV 610 yards to 158.

  34. Slugger September 11, 2011 7:40 am

  46. madeinhawaii September 11, 2011 9:03 am

    Pride,

Those stats you threw out at me yesterday really got me thinking.

Was Washington really able to scheme plays that took out our top tacklers?

Did they really have the athleticism in key positions to accomplish that?

If so, wow! That is game planning on the offensive side of the play book! Thank goodness we aren’t going to face any other team with the same or better caliber of players till possibly the end of the season.

  47. d1shima September 11, 2011 9:03 am

    Great Morning All!

If they win the coin toss in Vegas, Take the win and the ball!

  48. Not an Expert September 11, 2011 9:05 am

2nd Guessing, back seat driver and in hindsight. Easy to make comments challenging for coaches in realtime.

It appeared Washington was satisfied running the clock down before the half going in with a 7 point lead. I’m sure coach Mack knew a 2 point conversion was automatic when the lst PAT was blocked.

Timeout taken at times works sometimes it doesn’t work.

The 2 point conversion, a play should have already been known instead of having to call a timeout to decide. More positive for the success of the 2 points to be made if the offense is confident and ready. If anything the opposing defense would be less ready for it. The opposing team may be the one needing to call a timeout not having the right personnel.

I am sure Hawaii called the timeout before the half running down allowing Washington to take that chance on 3rd and long. Rest is history. If they went in down 1 touchdown and getting the ball lst, that would have been a better scenario.

As stated easy to comment and I stand corrected if Washington called timeout instead of Hawaii on their final posession before the half.

    …in moment of silence…

  50. papajoe2 September 11, 2011 9:14 am

My perspective on the upcoming WAC season. I don’t think that the Warriors can take any WAC game lightly. A lot of the WAC teams improved and they know our system after playing against us for many years. The home games we should pull it out, but any road game will be tough. I am concerned about Utah State and what they have to prove. I’m always concerned about Lousiana Tech and the physical ball that they play. Nevada will be very tough at their home with the weather and all although right now they are struggling. New Mexico beat powerful Minnesota outright at Minnesota. San Jose State’s game at UCLA was closer than probably anyone thought. Should we sweep the WAC, in no way it would be as easy as some of us think. Will we sweep the WAC? Tough one.

Enjoyed being amongst the fairly huge crowd there (the place was pretty packed) and appreciated that all were in support of our beloved team as UH Warrior Football 13th-man players. Everyone seemed to be sporting uniform green and/or black, the place was hopeful throughout, and always loud with excitement when celebrating and cheering the Team’s positive gains

I noticed Kealoha Pilares was still the the Carolina roster. I thought he was getting cut or on injury reserve, because of a nasty injury to his ankle. I don’t know if he will play in the near future but I am looking forward to him doing some damage in the NFL.

    — UH vs UNLV TsaikoTV-gate Announcement —

For the upcoming game this Saturday 9/17, we’ll be taking our Tsaiko cheering to the other side of town (Moilili) to 13th-man suport our Warriors from afar at Anasia Cafe and Restauranton Beretania.

For those who haven’t been there (like me) – Visited Anasia yesterday to evaluate the venue and saw that it’s a med-large comfortable place with very reasonable drink prices. Heard the fuud is really guud there, especially the pho soup if you like thatkindathing. 😉

Details are forthcoming ~Tuesday since it is not yet known by Oceanic either whether or what channel (PPV or other) the game will be shown via Oceanic. (Thanks for the heads up, d1 via KK and J(J)!)

    IS IT SATURDAY YET??!!

  76. UHfan808 September 11, 2011 11:18 am

jmxxxx – I’m glad you asked that question where to park cuz I did too —

Parking in front of the Anasia building will be a challenge but there is a much larger parking lot just before Anasia at the union building on same side of Beretania Street as Anasia.

We better. There is no way to sugar coat that UNLV looked beyond god awful the past 2 games.

Any team that allows Washington State to put up 59 points and holds down their offense in what was effectively a shut out needs some SERIOUS restoration and renovation.

    game replay on 12 or 1012 in 8 minutes.. umnnnn.. ah.. wait.. make that 7 minutes… whoops… 6 minutes and 45 seconds….

  86. RedZone September 11, 2011 11:43 am

We need to play big on our special teams. The only Rebel score yesterday came on a 95 yard return in the 4th quarter. Stop that and the goose will lay an egg.

  87. madeinhawaii September 11, 2011 11:44 am

But no need to rush.. wait a half hour… and you can catch it from the second quarter… when the Warriors show up…

    Okay okay.bad joke..

    my bad…

  88. papajoe2 September 11, 2011 11:44 am

2 things can make a team go thud! Overconfidence and lack of respect. UH hasn’t won the game against UNLV or any future opponent yet.

    Stay humble, stay focused.

Sorry. Just stating opinion shrouded in facts about UNLV. I repeat Wazzu put 59 points them…Washington State…Paul Wulff’s Washington State.

  94. jm2375 September 11, 2011 12:05 pm

hmmm… wonder if UH has thought of this or will consider it?

Since the football game will overlap with Wahine volleyball, UH should open up the SSC early, say 3:30 or 3:45, show the football game on the new scoreboard screens and start the volleyball game a little later if it’s close, or on time if it’s a blowout.

(Hope they’ve fixed that one screen)

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 11, 2011 1:17 pm

During Washington’s scoring drive at the end of the half, I realized that UW would put 3 guys on ONE of our DT’s. QB had all the time in the world to make the TD pass.

We rushing 4 guys, UW has 5 on the line…Triple teaming 1 DT, what happened to the other 3 D-linemen?

  106. madeinhawaii September 11, 2011 1:23 pm

    Reviewing the game…

The game could have been turned any number of ways… Bright’s dropped pass… Pollard’s fumble on UW’s 5 yd line… Moniz’s interception late in the game… A solid, 3 and out by the Defense in the 1st qtr could have changed the tide… especially after the fumble. [EDIT -added the following] I forgot to add, the late hit penalty against Hawaii in the 3rd qtr gave UW the opportunity to move ahead to 38-24. The Failed onside kick ended all hope.

    Nothing that cannot be fixed.

(Hope they’ve fixed that one screen)

JM2375: I sent the following request on Monday, Septembere 5, to Jim Donovan. I have not yet received a response one way or the other.

Here’s my suggestion for the September 17 game with UNLV.

Let folks into The Stan at 3 pm with open seating – UH students with ID free, UH football season ticket-holders free, UH Wahine volleyball ticket-holders free – however, place a very large donation jar at the entrance with a couple of cheerleaders or someone wearing a Warrior football uniform – any former players around? – actively soliciting donations. You could easily raise several thousand $$$ this way.

Everyone else – charge $5 with kids under 12 free. If people who do not already have volleyball tickets and want to stay for the volleyball match, then sell them upper level tickets which includes watching the football game.

Open up several of the refreshment stands + beer sales.

At the conclusion of the football game, everyone without a volleyball ticket has to leave and those of us who do must move to our regular seals.

Meanwhile, the volleyball match will probably start about half an hour later than scheduled, but that hasn’t been a problem with the various tournaments so far.

If this works, then we definitely can do this for some – or all – of the four remaining away games – especially the Nevada game on November 12 which should end around 2:30 pm HI-time. There is a volleyball match starting at 7 pm, but most people will not hang around unless there’s something going on like a concert or a some other band fund-raiser in Ching Field.

Perhaps Gib Arnold could be persuaded to have an open practice after the Nevada football game which could be used as a subtle ticket-marketing event.

I’ll be glad to help out in any way needed on any of the away dates, but I would appreciate being asked as soon as you & your staff decide to go ahead with this.

If there are people here interested in doing this, please call the Department of Athletics.

Meanwhile, if that doesn’t happen, could someone please provide more information as to where the Anasia Cafe is located on Beretania – what major mauka-makai streets is it between. Does it have any veggiebubblion entrees on the menu?

Dont’ forget the HI50 shoot between UH & Pepperdine for an upcoming episode after Saturday’s scheduled match. Those of us planning to take part have been asked to wear tops – tees, sweatshirts, hoodies – with the big green H on the front. My understanding is that the background colors should be green, white or black.

    MIH

looking at the error you mentioned. The LB you mentioned (late hit-15yd penalty-UW scores) same LB did the unnecessary selfish dive into the end zone (kick off gets pushed back, other team scores off short field).

He may be fast, quick and probably a good player. BUT being a selfish player in a team sport just does not seem to work. two bonehead plays, two scores by opposing team…is that worth keeping the talent on the field?

    Just asking.

    Just asking.

iwwthm #92, no worry. I hope the Warriors put up big numbers and maybe should put up big numbers. I just want them to take care of business and no think they going smash anybody. If everybody on the TEAM focuses and does their job then the game shouldn’t even be close. But stranger things have happened in football. I’m really worried about the second game on the mainland, in the desert, and away from the classroom. Remember the last time the Warriors were in Vegas, it was a result that shouldn’t have happened.

Completely worthless, but saw that we made Steve Megargee’s losers list:

    http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1263348

Hawaii (on the mainland): Hawaii’s season-opening victory over Colorado continued the Warriors’ tradition of giving major-conference teams all sorts of headaches at home. But the Warriors aren’t nearly as dangerous on the mainland. Hawaii’s 40-32 loss at Washington dropped the Warriors to 1-8 against major-conference teams on the road since 1998.

  128. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 11, 2011 3:36 pm

    papajoe,

i agree that our players and coaches should never take any team for granted. From the mighty to the mighty mice. My take on it was purely from a fan’s perspective.

    Be prepared, or Die.

  129. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 11, 2011 3:38 pm

Is it worthless because we already know about our inability to beat BCS teams on the road? Or because of who it is coming from?

  133. cocobean September 11, 2011 4:00 pm

Heard parts of the game on the radio, finally got to see the replay. I’m glad they played better than it sounded on radio

On offense Udub went back to the basics. They blocked and block some more. Game ball to their O line. They openned cracks(not huge holes) that a back like Pike could exploit. no arm tackling that guy. They mixed a good back and good blocking to set up their passing game. With the threat of a run our D couldn’t seem to generate consistent pressure on their QB. Couldn’t get that guy out of his comfort zone. He passing with a smile on his face all game.

Our O guys played well enough to win most games. Had some drops and missed blocks but what can you do at that time except move on to the next play. Moniz showed his quality. He did bailout the Oline several times with his feet.

Really feel we have a good team, players and coaches. We’ll win way more than we’ll lose. Can’t blame the players or coaches for most miscues made in the heat of battle. They’ll grimmace when they see their errors after watching the film and work to correct them.

Can’t say Udub is better than us. The only difference I saw between the two teams was that Udub was at home and we weren’t.

  134. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 11, 2011 4:11 pm

    From Breaking News:

LAS VEGAS >>> The University of Hawaii football team has been installed as a 19 1/2-point favorite over Nevada-Las Vegas for Saturday’s non-conference game, oddsmakers said today.

A spokesman for Las Vegas Sports Consultants, which sets the lines for several sports books here, said that was the early line heading into the week.

UH is 1-1 after a 40-32 loss a Washington while the hometown Rebels are 0-2 and coming off a 59-7 thumping at Washington State.

The Warriors, who will remain on the Mainland, arrived here Saturday night by charter from Seattle and will begin practices Monday.

A CHALLENGE TO LAURA: If UH loses at UNLV – even by one point – I’ll donate $50 to your favorite non-profit or to your favorite booster club at your favorite NCAA school. If UH wins by fewer than 15 points, you need to identify yourself by whatever name is on your driver’s license, birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport, or some other legal piece of paper.

If UH wins by 16 or more points, you need to do the identification thing plus never again post anything on this blog or Cindy’s blog.

    Walk the talk, dearest.

  142. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 11, 2011 4:35 pm

We lost ONE game and we are a “broken team”?

I have my gripes about our deficiencies and such but I don’t think we are anywhere near “broken”.

The rest of the season is manageable. We don’t play any “big” teams until BYU. The rest of the OOC schedule with UC-Davis, UNLV, Tulane should be 3 wins right there.

If we lose, I would think BYU, La Tech, Utah St are the ones that could do it.

  143. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 11, 2011 4:38 pm

Maybe Mack is rotating the OL players? I dont know. If so, I guess that is what he means.

Ferd only mentions that the selected “starters” are all seniors except Shigematsu who is now out with an injury.

I have seen dark green shirts with the H on them being worn at various events, but I have never seen them for sale in the Rainbowtiques. The fronts or backs sold there usually have small Hs plus the name of the sport or the team along with a ball – volley, basket or foot.

Any idea where to buy a green shirt with a big H on the front.

Okay time for a second hand up close and personal story. I was especially happy to see Richard Torres return the int for a TD yesterday. In high school my son and Richard were on opposing judo and wrestling teams. My son did lose once to Richard in wrestling but dominated the other Kahuku Judoka and wrestlers. While they didn’t really know each other in HS they knew of each other. This past summer while my son was at D&B’s this guy walked up to him with no high maka maka and introduced himself as Richard Torres. My son kinda recognized Richard and said eh, you remember me? Richard replied huh? that’s you? They talked about the good old days and cruised a bit. Richard is just one of many outstanding young athletics on the Warrior football team.

    Go Warriors!

WANNA BET 2012 SEASON TICKETS ON IT?????

BLACK AND WHITE, WE BEAT USU.

    I say we win.. DUUUUUHHHHH…

And apparently you say we lose.

  164. d1shima September 11, 2011 5:32 pm

    Hey Bulla.

Hope the Beast comes back soon

  165. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 11, 2011 5:36 pm

    #168,

    Kevin,

I said they are 1 of the teams that could possibly beat us. I would never have believed Idaho could be us until it actually happened.

Sounds like a nice bet and I am a gambler, but I don’t bet against my own team. Sorry.

  166. cocobean September 11, 2011 5:36 pm

Iwonder, I think the game annoucers mentioned that. Was Warren Moon the color guy?

So far Gordy Shaw has done wonders with what he’s had to work with. Next year is going to be the same as this and the previous year. Not an outstanding O line but a serviceable one. A big positive is as a group, the O line, has always had the highest participation rate in OS workouts.

Rolo has a deep pool of QB talent to pick from next year. Not worried about it. I trust his ability to customize the O to take advantage of what he has.

  167. d1shima September 11, 2011 5:40 pm

I’m glad the OL hasn’t “made” All-conference players out of opposing DE’s to this point. 🙄

  168. Kevin September 11, 2011 5:41 pm

    Why USU?

Logically I see reasons for concern against BYU and LaTech IN Ruston, but why USU?

Just because of one game against Auburn? At Auburn? So what? Like I said, they did something similar in Norman and some got all worried about us going into Logan for NO reason.

  169. Longboarder September 11, 2011 5:45 pm

Laura was outed for the 2nd time last week on the vollyball blog.

The dudes last name was posted too.

  170. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 11, 2011 5:46 pm

    #173,

They looked good against Auburn and good against Weber. I’ll admit its only 2 games and one is a 1-AA but so far they seemed to have a good offense.

Mostly its just a haunch I that I have. I can see them as a possible Idaho from a couple years ago.

  171. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 11, 2011 5:48 pm

    #175 haunch=hunch*

  172. Kevin September 11, 2011 5:59 pm

I also had a hunch people should have stopped being all habut about the home game against then #18 Nevada last season.

I screamed for weeks that it’s the SAME Nevada team I’ve been seeing for three years and people scoffed. In the end, the result was the same.

My hunch is that our conference opponents are something we should be familiar with moreso than our non-conference foes. We see them every season and we should just know.

Same for USU, just another year with USU coming into Aloha Stadium and we win.

  173. ai-eee-soos September 11, 2011 6:09 pm

Yup, the line is -17 to -19.5.

  174. postmanke September 11, 2011 6:17 pm

I really like our game against La Tech this year. They’ll play Houston then Miss St right before they play us. La Tech is a pretty solid balanced team but Houston and Miss St will soften them up for us.

  175. save yo money September 11, 2011 6:21 pm

WDoc – save yo money. Laura/ClownNose = Steve Imai

  176. postmanke September 11, 2011 6:28 pm

Looking ahead.. Hard to dicipher your opponent strengths and weakness based on 2 games. but the next 4 opponents Pass Efficiency Defense Rank can give early tell-tale signs..

    Pass Efficiency Defense Rank

    UNLV – 120th

UC Davis – 95th FCS Div

La Tech – 54th for now.. Houston, Miss St then UH

    SJSU – 97th

We’re 114th not so good but 27th in run defense. I suspect the coaches will get it balanced and make a strong run at the WAC title.

  177. cocobean September 11, 2011 6:29 pm

save yo money, hope you feel better. Many people could have posted what you did but refrained. Laura could learn a lot about blog etiquette but so can you.

have You ever posted under a differenct name.

  189. Slugger September 11, 2011 8:09 pm

Gunfunit! I don’t believe it! I messed up my copy of the game & I didn’t see it on tonight’s schedule. What a dufus! (as one of my rommates used to say) Thanks for posting the “heads up”, Ralph. If I hadn’t been cooking dinner, I would have caught it in time. Tsigh.

  193. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 11, 2011 8:48 pm

Just found out that Pinky’s Pupu Bar & Grill across from the Aikahi Park Shopping Center in Kailua has a small party room which could probably accommodate about 15 -18 people. The room has a HUGE flat screen tv set – in addition to reasonably-priced great food.

If we have a larger crowd than 20, then we can take over the lounge area which has three or four tv sets.

The away games after this coming week are LaTech (Saturday, Oct. 1 – 1 pm); San Jose State (Friday, October 14 – 3 pm); Idaho (Saturday, October 29 – 11 am); Nevada (Saturday, November 12 – 1:05 pm). All times local.

I suggest the LaTech game – no time conflict with volleyball. If there’s any interest, I’ll be glad to make arrangements.

As for the San Jose State game – major time conflict with those folks who have to be at work until 5 pm.

    BEautiful full moon rise tonight.

    ST:

One of the criticisms of the internet – and blogs in particular – is the fact that many people do their character assassinations by hiding their identities behind blog names. As you may have read about cyber-bullying and trolls and the resultant problems, perhaps it’s time to have the bloggers stop using pseudonyms and start using their real names.

  199. Kevin September 11, 2011 9:29 pm

    Won’t mean squat.

I use firefox and some nights at 12:00 exactly or 12:30 exactly, firefox stops working and does not load a page. The internet connection is perfectly fine though because it says excellent. I am connected to a home router and the signal strength is always excellent. I do not know why this happens at exactly 12:00 or 12:30 on my desktop time but it’s a pain. I’ve tried “ping”ing and everything looks fine..

  204. Kevin September 11, 2011 9:32 pm

    Tom,

It drives up the post count. Well, not needed so much here but other blogs, those that even tolerate and encourage such behavior need the blog counts I guess….

  205. Kevin September 11, 2011 9:33 pm

    Tom,

That’s why I called it out.

Someone tried to make me look like a bitch on here and I backed up my mouth.

I welcome a challenge, especially face to face.

  206. Kevin September 11, 2011 9:37 pm

Think of all the people that fought for freedom of speech only to see cowards abusing it knowing they can cite it.

More disgusting is people defending that notion.

Lost a friend in Iraq a year ago.

Don’t tell me freedom of speech is a “right”. It’s a damn privilege. Privileges can be taken away. Perhaps we should “explore” that.

  207. jm2375 September 11, 2011 10:04 pm

Someone refresh my memory please. Why is SJSU game on a Friday? Is it on ESPN?

WDoc – Pinky’s would be good for at least one tv-gate. I can make all except the LaTech game. (People should know better than to schedule major events on Saturdays from September to early December! 😈 )

  208. KBay John September 11, 2011 10:07 pm

Old Diver, how have you been? It is unfortunate that Hawaii started slow against Washington, they should have killed those guys. Oh well, payback in LV won’t be too bad huh?

Oh and Laura, what is the problem here? Don’t be a hater and bag on UH, these kids give it all they have, no matter if they are six foot 9 or 4 foot 8.

But then again, I bet you are an Irish fan huh Laura…

  209. BleedGreen808 September 11, 2011 10:07 pm

What were you doing ten years ago to this day?

Me: I was sleeping in. My mom called me to tell me what had happened. I still remember that day like it was yesterday.

Before you go to sleep tonight, pray for those that died and sacrificed their life for our freedom and be thankful you live in the GREAT U S of A. Be proud to be an American!!! God bless America!!!

Tom – I’ve posted this before, but for safety’s sake, the Tsaikettes should be allowed to post under one, and only one, blog name. The true Tsaikettes have stuck to that edict anyways…

  211. Slugger September 11, 2011 10:24 pm

    BG808,

I’ve been watching some of the programs today. It is so sad thinking about all who were lost. It generates anger to think our country was attacked. Say a prayer for those who were killed and those who remain. [I was getting ready for work and just happened to be watching the morning news. Heavy heart.]

    God bless you all!

  212. papajoe2 September 11, 2011 10:30 pm

Kevin, you right about Utah State playing here. My bad.I must have read the schedule wrong. Imua Warriors.

  216. 99club September 11, 2011 10:59 pm

    Good morning Tsaikos…

Way to go J-E-T-S! Gawwwwwd I hate the Cowboys. Rex Grossman with a 110 passer rating yesterday? Yeah baby!

Just noticed that the Oklahoma – Florida St. game will be on while we’re “tailgating” in a casino in Vegas. Should be a lively sportsbook!

As for the discussion on our future opponents, I look forward to seeing our run D up against good competition. Fresno St., Utah St., and La Tech have talented backs in Robbie Rouse, Robert Turbin, and Lennon Creer, respectively, that should give our D a decent challenge.

    …off to work.

Exactly one week before 9/11, my wife to be, at that time, left here and got on a connecting United flight from Kennedy Airport in NYC to Paris.

I remember 9/11, I was laying in my bedroom … just got through chatting with my wife to be who was now back home in Paris, my eyes bloodshot.. ready to close … watching TV when the initial broadcast came over.. I watched as the first building shattered and started to crumble… and I thought.. wow!.. incredible graphics.. so much detail.. who did the special effects… but they kept showing it.. and I kept disbelieving… over and over… over and over.. until it finally sank in and then my mind went numb.

It was a life changing moment. My priorities changed from that moment.. but that’s a different story.

  219. cocobean September 11, 2011 11:27 pm

    Kevin,

I enjoy your posts, one of the more outspoken regulars. Sorry you lost a friend in Iraq.

When I started UH the Vietnam war was in full swing. Can’t say I lost a friend in combat but I can say I lost freinds because of their service there. Their guard unit from here was activated for combat duty there. The stress of jungle combat got to them. While here on R&R they show me some things I will never forget. One was photos that can best described as man’s inhumanity to man. Said their unit was just doing to VC bodies what the VC was doing to US bodies. Another thing was when they took out cigarettes, rolled the filter area until the filter popped out. The filter had been cut to about a third of it’s size. They then poured out a white powder which was heroin. Said it made them feel emotionally numb. To make a long story short within two years one died of a H overdose and the other commited suicide. Both were younger than 25.

I tell you this because it seems there’s a generational divide between your views and mine on freedom of speech. I’m of the Vietnam War/Flower generation. This era reaffrimed the right of freedom of speech. Any special interest group could gather their supporters and publicly air their views. Public protests and demonstations were common place. While I never participated in any I supported a group or person’s right to do so.

Two of the popular utterances of this era was, freedom is not free and I may not agree with what you are saying but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

#224 – cocobean – I don’t talk much about this time frame of my life, but what I can say is that people who were not there have no idea of what went on and the mental toll it took on us that were. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to handle some not so lucky.

We who were there weren’t fighting for your freedom of speech, we were military people following orders. Now those who fought in WWII and those who are fighting now are fighting are fighting no only for our freedom of speech but our freedom period, they both fought and are fighting against others who want to destroy our freedom.

I like this quote from the movie “American President”

America isn’t easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, ’cause it’s gonna put up a fight. It’s gonna say “You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can’t just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the “land of the free”.

It is a very difficult thing to be free.

Sorry for the rant, (stepping down from soapbox)

“ferd” mentioned the LV Hilton Sports Book this morning. For those who are venturing to LV this week, found this note in the Las Vegas Advisor

Reduced juice—The LV Hilton will once again offer -105 pricing this year. As in the past, -105—bet $105 to win $100, as opposed to the standard $110/$100—for NFL and college games will be available at the SuperBook on Thursdays from 3 to 11 pm, beginning Sept. 1. For the past two years, no other Las Vegas book has matched this offer.

  233. d1shima September 12, 2011 6:24 am

    and from the “Forewarned Dept.”

Those who are thinking about going to those famous Pool Parties:

As reported by “Fox 5 News” in Las Vegas, water in five of Las Vegas’ top party pools tested positive for high levels of urine and, in one instance, bacteria that causes urinary tract infections. The pools cited were MGM Grand’s Wet Republic, Hard Rock’s Rehab, Venetian’s TAO Beach, Palms Pool, and Aria’s Liquid.
