Hawaii track and field: 2 athletes ready for NCAA West regional

UPDATE II: Kristen LaCosse ended her season in the NCAA West Preliminary second day of competition, as the Hawaii sophomore posted a time of 59.47 seconds in the 400 meters to take 20th overall out of 48 competitors in the region at Sacramento State. She finished seventh in her heat. UH wins four events at Rainbow Relays

Clearing the bar for the first time in the outdoor season was the first step for Rainbow Wahine freshman Lily Lowe. Once that was out of the way, Lowe continued her ascent to win the high jump at the Rainbow Relays on Saturday at UH’s Ching Complex. Most opportunities to post Big West qualifying marks require a trip to the mainland for the University of Hawaii track and field team. Not so this week. Touted as the largest meet hosted by UH since the 2011 Western Athletic Conference championships, the Rainbow Relays runs Friday and Saturday at the Ching Complex. Five from UH at World University Games

Before joining the Rainbow Wahine golf team this fall, Eimi Koga is spending part of her summer representing the country at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea. The Moanalua graduate is part of the three-member U.S. team and shot a 4-over-par 76 at Naju Gold Lake Country Club on Wednesday. She was tied for 21st after the first round. While her teammates competed in the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. on Friday, Hawaii senior Zhane Santiago was back home, her opportunity to participate stolen before the Rainbow Wahine track and field team’s departure on Thursday morning. Santiago set a UH record in the 60-meter hurdles in the University of Washington Invitational on Jan. 31 and was set to compete in the event again as well as the long jump when the Rainbow Wahine returned for this week’s indoor meet.
