Desert storm

SUMMERLIN — Another day, another storm.

Somehow the weather that was supposed to be experienced in Seattle last week has made its way to Las Vegas and its suburbs.

The Warriors practiced today for 2 hours, with most of the workout in the rain. But they were able to put in the finishing touches on their offense and tighten a new defensive scheme.

Right slotback Miah Ostrowski still was wearing a medical boot, but he vows to try to play. Terence Bell, Corey Paclebar and Justin Clapp got reps at right slotback today.

Meanwhile, Levi Legay said he is adjusting to the starting job at right tackle. His last start was as a Kealakehe High senior in 2006.

lvw2

* * * * *

Russell Harding, who is a pharmacist in Australia, attended today’s practice to watch his son, returner Scott Harding.

Former UH defensive coordinator Dave Fagg attended today’s practice:

Where are the action shots? Well, uh … it was raining. It finally stops raining. I run out, take a shot and … trainer Brian Wong walks into the picture.

Remember that game, hot potato?

This thing that looks like a stool is similar in intent. The football is placed on it, and the quarterback has a set amount of time to pick up the ball before a horn sounds.

    Boyd stadium turf turning saturated?

    Or is artificial?

    Please pardon my ignorance.

I do know that many turf fields in desert scapes mix plenty of sand with the clay soil for drainage.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Believe it or not, this is my first experience with a Warrior “away” game. I hope that the outcome is as predicted! Will be there cheering them on!

    Go Warriors!

    ST,

Is Miah feeling better? What are the chances of Harding replacing him. I really like the way that kid plays.

  9. Wes'side Warrior September 14, 2011 5:14 am

Morning, everyone! Hope you all have a great day!

Continued healing prayers for Sean Shigematsu, Miah Ostrowski, Coach Tomey, and all others in need!

    Yesterday’s #265… H20…

I was being facetious (or humorous) in reference to the Sand Volleyball – Beach Volleyball thing. Really thought it was a given.

Anyways, I hope the desert dries up for Saturday’s game. I just feel like we’re on the verge of going Kilau’ea on them Rebels.

    Looking forward to it.

  13. WarriorNY September 14, 2011 5:31 am

Why aren’t we letting Bright sit and fully heal from his Turf Toe injury and get Sampson in there? We have a stretch of seven games where our best opponent is La Tech. Is it really beneficial to have Bright at 80 percent than have Sampson at 100?

  14. Garret September 14, 2011 5:36 am

Safe travels to everyone going to Vegas. Hopefully the storm and construction doesn’t disrupt their travel plans.

Weather.com says that there are just light rains this morning and the big storm/lightning is coming in the afternoon, so it is good that the Warriors are practicing this morning.

  15. Garret September 14, 2011 5:38 am

Forecast for Saturday is a high of 92, low of 69, and 0% chance of rain. With the game in the evening, the temperature shouldn’t be too much of a factor.

The rain may disrupt UNLV’s practice schedule, which could reduce their prep time for UH’s offense. It probably doesn’t matter since UNLV has been so bad this season, but the weather can’t help them much.

  16. d1shima September 14, 2011 6:07 am

  25. Slugger September 14, 2011 6:58 am

    WarriorNY,

Scott Harding is too new to the team to replace Miah. He needs time in the system to learn the routes. He does have good hands & I expect to see him get us some yards when he catches a KO in this next game. His Dad is in LV to watch him.

Seems as if WA was kicking it to Edwards. He’s good, too! Mike’s Dad will also be at the UNLV game.

Hope the Aussie families enjoy LV. Alex’s Mom & Unko are there.

Interesting so far I do know that they have already filmed at upper campus at UH and then of course there is this Saturday night in the SSC with a made for TV wahine volleyball match.

This is valuable face time for UH and UH athletics!!!!

  34. Dennis Halloran September 14, 2011 8:09 am

Would we have to settle for being National Champion playoff contender FCS every year?

Warriors-Rebels game on TV 3 ways

Saturday’s University of Hawaii-UNLV football game will be available in Honolulu on three platforms, a spokesman for The Mtn., the originating producer of the game, said Tuesday.

Kickoff is 4 p.m. Hawaii time and the game will not be part of Oceanic Time Warner’s pay-per-view package, The Mtn. said.

Oceanic subscribers who receive CBS College Sports may watch it on that channel since Oceanic doesn’t currently carry The Mtn.

In addition, Hawaiian Telcom subscribers in the Honolulu area may view it on channel 90.

DirecTV customers can see the game two ways:

CBS College Sports is available to customers with the Choice Xtra and above packages, while The Mtn. is available to customers with a Sports Pack subscription.

BUT, if stay Mililani, no can order PPV.

Forget dis…. going Rock Bottom by University Ave for the game. Might have to leave early to get to Wahine vball that night so it’s just right there.

  50. Da Punchbowl Kid September 14, 2011 9:17 am

    koakane –

Not to mention my friend’s nursery and chicken farm up Ka’alaea side. Wot about dem? Da pole went down last time time had da big rain by Gmahoney’s place, but because das private property Hawaian Tel and Oceanic no can touch ’em. Wot about dem? I wish Kevin would had go do his homework before he ax anykine questions.

  51. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 9:20 am

    Kevin,

Aren’t they showing the game at the Stan Sherif unit Volleyballs starts?

  52. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 9:20 am

    oops.. unit = until

  53. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 9:22 am

I wonder who will do the video taping for the football games when we enter the MWC?

  54. Couch potato September 14, 2011 9:22 am

in the meantime, i hope mayweather gets his arse kicked.

  55. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 9:22 am

What’s the TV contracts going to be like for the rest of the sports?

  56. Kevin September 14, 2011 9:24 am

    Made,

Didnt hear about them televising the game in the arena, although now would be a great time to take advantage considering the new scoreboard.

  57. Couch potato September 14, 2011 9:27 am

just don’t sit on the side of the scoreboard with the small kine unworking rectangle on the big screen.

  58. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 9:28 am

    Kevin,

I’m pretty sure that’s the case. I’ve seen several posts regarding that. Someone also mentioned that it might even be available at Manoa Gardens on Campus. Hopefully, someone else will confirm.

  59. Kevin September 14, 2011 9:29 am

    Made,

Do you mean the future contract with the MWC and BWC or do you mean CURRENTLY with OcSports?

Cause for the time being is SEEMS that the sports that were televised under K-5 all those years SHOULD be on par to be covered by OcSports.

If OcSports only wanted revenue programs on TV, then soccer would not have been televised now as it always has been in the past. So for the time being only can assume the spring sports are on time.

There are MORE crossover games in the spring considering the spring has the carryover of mens and women’s basketball and then factor in men’s volleyball, baseball, and softball, of course as the spring progresses into February and March, it dwindles down to mens volleyball, baseball, and softball.

We know of those three which one gets the shaft and the short end of the stick so I won’t go there….

  60. Kevin September 14, 2011 9:31 am

Yeah, what the hell is that about??????? Its so new the damn thing should be under warranty.

Well, at least they got the player number thing to work properly, but now that dumbarse black spot really pisses me off. Even though I never sit on that side of the arena, it sucks knowing it’s there.

and yes… Rich Sheriff and Co know about it. Not sure if its a matter of replacing those little LED bulbs or a whole new screen having to be replaced.

  61. Kevin September 14, 2011 9:33 am

UH should really look into charging like 5.00 or 10.00 to come in a watch the away games at the arena. Open the concession and beer stands.

Before I didn’t want UH to do it because the old scoreboard was such a dilapidated piece of garbage, but now is a great time to do it.

  62. jm2375 September 14, 2011 9:33 am

mih – didn’t hear about televising the game in the Arena, but the game will be on the in-house radio (106.5FM) until the Wahine game starts. Hopefully by then it’ll be a blowout…

  63. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 9:43 am

yeah.. I probably got it wrong.. heard it from someone who heard it from someone else who heard it from some reliable, unidentifiable, source.

  64. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 9:43 am

Must be somewhere on campus that one can see the game, though. Wouldn’t you think?

  65. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 14, 2011 10:01 am

Whether get game or not on TV, whether we win or lose, main ting, only ting, every ting that matters is da GREEN BOTTLES KEEP COMING.

Have to agree if and that’s a big if, UH was smart they would show the UH vs UNLV game on the big screen at the SS and start the VB game say a half hour later. They want to fill the SS and that’s one way to do it, and it makes the fans happy.

Pomai (and others who mentioned) RE #79 –

YES, that’s a great idea! I would go watch there at the SSC!!

    Question is – WHEN?!?

  91. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 14, 2011 10:38 am

    ST,

Jersey Boys is a great show. You are going to leave the Venetian thinking “OH WHAT A NIGHT!”…and probably humming it too.

The significance of Russell Harding holding the helmet is that Aussie Rules Football players don’t wear helmets or pads. First time Scott Harding wore pads was in training camp.

    Who starts the timer?

  100. A-joe September 14, 2011 11:22 am

The idea to have away games shown at SCC was proposed to JD at the last Tsaiko meeting with him. JD held reservations on the idea. One sticking point was he believed it would undercut patronage towards establishments around town that have already paid a premium to show the games. Any hint of a drop in their attendance, UH will hear about it.

Still, JD’s not totally against it. He was to propose the idea at their weekly board meeting.

  101. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 11:23 am

    Kevin..

No forget.. dress up for the VB game… might get cast as an extra on Hi 5-0. Who knows? Maybe a second career.

  102. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 11:24 am

    A-Joe…

Not all of UH’s students are of age to go to many of these “establishments” around town…

  103. LizKauai September 14, 2011 11:33 am

Good points about the SSC being more family-friendly than bars.

  104. Slugger September 14, 2011 11:37 am

    mih,

That was one of the points I thought about when suggesting it to JD. One of the considerations JD pointed out associated with using the SSC is the additional time the SSC staff spend working an away game with the additional time out of their already busy schedule/lives. They could open the SSC without selling beer at the event which would eliminiate the concern about underage drinking and taking business away from the bars. It would be nice if they could project the game on the large screen before this VB game, though. Charge an extra $5-$10 in addition to your WVB ticket…just a thought…

  105. Unkanesson September 14, 2011 11:41 am

Showing road games at the SSC in conjunction with another event like a VB match is an idea that’s too good not to try. It’s not likely to happen often, once or twice a season, so shouldn’t hurt the commercial establishments too much. May be too late in FB season to do it this year, but when the schedules for next Fall are finalized, I think JD should give it serious consideration. It has the potential to be a great synchronicity event for the Athletic Dept. and UH sports fans. I think they’d fill the SSC, which would be great for the other event (VB or BB).

  106. Kevin September 14, 2011 11:42 am

    A-Joe,

Makes sense to me with what JD says. As for the students residing on campus, maybe UH can look into taking some of those athletic fee monies and having the away games shown in the various student lounges in each dorm.

But yeah, if UH advertises games at the arena, it could effect the establishments that paid a pretty penny for the packages and those monies obviously counts for PPV revenue.

  107. Nalani September 14, 2011 11:44 am

Hey Gang ~ Just wanted to stop in and say HI. I know I haven’t been around for a while. Kahai is not playing this season, but doing well in school and interning for a great engineering firm during the summer. Pono’s Sr year at Kamehameha. Hope you are all healthy and happy….cause really that’s all that matters!

  108. Kevin September 14, 2011 11:45 am

I think people proposed the idea of having the SSC host ALL road games to Donovan and this raises the question of “undercutting” the establishments that paid for the ppv package.

However this ONE particular rare instance of the volleyball match, UNLV road game, AND the fact that they want people to be in the arena for the Hawaii Five O shooting should be considered, but it’s too late.

It’s Wednesday, Donovan is in UNLV and at the pace things move sometimes up there…. yeah.. you know.

But it’s football and we’ve seen UH bypass their own redtape and move mountains for football and men’s basketball. Just those two sports. Just saying…

  109. Laura September 14, 2011 11:47 am

Kahuku must have a bye this week if Richard Torres (Kahuku HC) is in Vegas.

  110. TChahng September 14, 2011 11:50 am

    Reggie

  111. Slugger September 14, 2011 11:50 am

Since this UNLV game is not really part of the PPV package, UH could screen it at the SSC and not affect Oceanic’s PPV income. That’s one of the things that has to be balanced with what UH does. They have an obligation to make sure their TV PPV vendor is successful, but since only those who can view the CBSSports package can see the UNLV game, maybe this one time they could screen the away game. The staff is set to work that evening; I wonder if the additional hours can be covered by additional entrance fees by the public to cover the cost? The students should get in free due to paying the athletic fee. Gives you a larger crowd for the filming after the WVB game…

  112. LizKauai September 14, 2011 11:51 am

    Hi Nalani!!!

  113. Nalani September 14, 2011 11:54 am

    ST,

Say hello to my cousin Reid for me.

    Is he working with you?

At family get togethers he always is the sports guru.

  115. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 11:57 am

    Slugger…

I figure it’s really not much different from PPV for home games. I mean, only 6 games are away… these establishments then compete with the Stadium. Then sometimes they compete with ESPN or what have you… so they sell atmosphere and good food.

I think an on campus venue would only help to nurture more fans. Which would, over the course of years spill over into the other markets.

  116. Slugger September 14, 2011 11:59 am

    Hi, Nalani!

I was wondering where Kaha’i was. Sounds like a great internship. My Aunty & UNcle said they have tickets to see you in Dec. somewhere in SoCal. Come join us at a T-Gate!

  117. A-joe September 14, 2011 12:06 pm

MIH- I know. It was brought up. It didn’t matter.

But, in your point lays a question: what kind of crowd could the SCC attract? What crowd out there is not being served by these establishments?

What if SCC does not serve liquor and make it more family friendly. Will that attract a different crowd being under served? You know, like say a family of 9 that can’t travel to a road game or attend a home game as a family but could definitely make it a family day at the SCC watching football while the kids play. IDK.

Kevin- That’s the kind of ideas JD and UH is looking for. Perhaps JD or Kinda Shy are glancing over today’s blog, sees your suggestion and make a mental note of it.

And BTW- JD DOES read this blog. He does take ideas posted here into consideration. At the Tsaiko meeting JD made keen references to several of Garret’s posts.

  121. Pomai September 14, 2011 12:11 pm

One other thing I don’t know if the sale of liquor would make much difference due to the type of fans that go to VB, the few times I have gone to a VB game there wasn’t the same kind of crowd that say go to the football games(Falling down drunks) but I do like the idea of an alcohol free event for families.

Tsai-ko functions have proven themselves safe for unaccompanied women and a place where friendship rules, whether you drink or not.

  128. Couch potato September 14, 2011 12:39 pm

for me, i’d rather go to an establishment that has the game instead of the ssc. there’s more camaraderie, better seating and roaming arrangements, way better food and drinks, free parking, pre and post game bar activities, and sometimes eye-candy waitresses.

even if the ssc charges $5 to watch the game, if 1000 people attend that’s only $5,000. you still have staff to pay, use of utilities to power the ssc, and not to mention the ssc is kinda far from deep in the wesside, northshore, God’s country, and neighbor islands.

    just sayin’

  129. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 12:45 pm

    Couch Potato..

I figure If that 1000 people are above and beyond the 4500 that will show up for the VB game.. and they buy $5 in food .. AND half buy VB tickets to stay and watch after the game… AND they buy $5.00 more in food… That accounts for at least 1/2 the recruiting budget… AND if that makes for better recruits.. these recruits make for a better team.. which in turn makes for a greater turn out the next season…. and the next.. it grows exponentially.

    But it starts with $5K.

  130. Pomai September 14, 2011 12:49 pm

So many possibilities, so little time.

  134. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 12:55 pm

  137. Kevin September 14, 2011 12:57 pm

    iwwthm,

Dunno if you call it a wine or beer garden, but as you enter the SSC from the main gate and take a right and keep walking to the first beer concession area, there are a bunch of stand-up style bar tables directly across against the outer wall.

Some people “park” there the whole game… don’t ask me why.

  138. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 12:57 pm

I tell you one thing, people that lean too left or too right shouldn’t be allowed to make decisions for the masses.

The needs of the many OUTWEIGH the needs of the few.

If alcohol was the real problem all people drinking at sporting events would cause a massive riot.

FACT is less than 20% of a crowd as large as that in Aloha Stadium can and have caused problems.

  143. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 12:59 pm

  144. Kevin September 14, 2011 12:59 pm

    Couch Potato,

Not sure, but ALL on campus concessions at the arena, baseball and softball stadiums will have a portion go to UH athletics.

Aloha Stadium… NADA. Best to avoid wasting your money on things not going to UH.

took a cursory look at the Wahine vb sched and the Warrior football sched. two games both teams are away and two games that have the Wahine game following the Warrior game. however, there seems to be some downtime between games.

sure, jd can put something together to broadcast games at the ssc but i think it won’t work out.

    just sayin’

  148. Couch potato September 14, 2011 1:08 pm

  149. UHAlum91 September 14, 2011 1:11 pm

    ST:

I thought UH’s travel squad was set at 66 due to “budgetary reasons”. But if a player is hurt, sent home, and another player is flown in for the next game… Doesn’t that defeats the purpose of the budget?

Afterall, injuries are part of the game, and that’s suppose to be factored in the depth chart.

  150. Couch potato September 14, 2011 1:12 pm

get tom moffatt to work with jd. should be easy to pack 10,000 concert goers if the venue is good.

  151. Kevin September 14, 2011 1:12 pm

A-House raises a good logistical question.

What kind of crowd (size-wise) will come to the arena for an away game?

The arena is in Manoa. Check out the demographic there and in the surrounding areas. If there is no alcohol for a “family friendly” environment, where are the people with families living? The majority are not in town. You’d have to look a little past Manoa towards the East. Most people living in Manoa Valley are older and do not live with their children who may have children. People in Kaimuki are older couples as well.

Familes of 4+ live more in Central Oahu, Windward Oahu, and out East in Kahala/Hawaii Kai, gap in Aina Haina with more older folks as well.

Wanna take it up a notch to draw familes from a distance to Manoa??? Turn that sucka into Bishop Museum EAST. Ballons for the kids, have the pep band there, if they cannot make the road game, cheerleaders and dancers. DO IT ALL.

Because quite frankly without all those things, really looking at opening a massive venue of that size up for less than 200 people. Is that fiscally responsible for a cash-strapped department?

    NO.

    Cannot run UH like free-for-all.

  152. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 1:13 pm

    Aloha Nalani!

Best of luck to Kahai! Mahalo for being a Warrior!

  155. LizKauai September 14, 2011 1:18 pm

151- Kevin – I think, not for just any away game. Just using THIS as a sample opportunity to fill the house.

    1. Warrior Away Game viewing

    2. Wahine Game

    3. Hawaii 5-0 filming

    Big, multi-use benefit.

  156. madeinhawaii September 14, 2011 1:18 pm

    Kevin..

Probably a lot of Dorm, nearby student rentals and Kalo Drive/Place dwellers… but I suspect there is more than enough to make a profit. Many don’t own cars. Won’t really know till you try. Not trying is worse.

a better money making venture is to hold concerts at the ssc.

There is some kind of “rule” or decree stating that the Blaisdell gets first refusal over all concerts coming to Oahu.

This is kind of old news, but it’s STUPID considering the SSC is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Blaisdell in terms of a facility and quality. This robs UH any chance of gaining a profit off of facility usage fees.

Pretty sure this was a vision the late Stan Sheriff had when pushing for it’s construction.

There have been so many concerts over the last few years that UH has missed out because of this stupid and unjust rule.

Sports Hawaii will have another chat with JD beginning of next month. I’ll try to ask him on his position on this and what he has or plans on doing to work with the legislature on removing this “rule”.

IF the rule is still in place, I do not understand how other venues get called up like Kaka’ako Waterfront, Aloha Tower, etc… The Waikiki Shell falls under Blasidell authority.

  158. Couch potato September 14, 2011 1:21 pm

so much for attending bieber fever at the ssc. 😆

  160. Kevin September 14, 2011 1:24 pm

    Liz,

I mentioned earlier that I agree in this rare instance of THIS Saturday, UH SHOULD open up the arena as suggested.

Said such things in post 61:

    Kevin:

    September 14th, 2011 at 9:33 am

UH should really look into charging like 5.00 or 10.00 to come in a watch the away games at the arena. Open the concession and beer stands.

Before I didn’t want UH to do it because the old scoreboard was such a dilapidated piece of garbage, but now is a great time to do it.

    and post 108:

    Kevin:

I think people proposed the idea of having the SSC host ALL road games to Donovan and this raises the question of “undercutting” the establishments that paid for the ppv package.

However this ONE particular rare instance of the volleyball match, UNLV road game, AND the fact that they want people to be in the arena for the Hawaii Five O shooting should be considered, but it’s too late.

I am speaking in terms of those wanting it open for all home games.

  161. Hawaiianbod September 14, 2011 1:25 pm

MIH – re 152: i noticed that, too.

  162. Kevin September 14, 2011 1:26 pm

    Couch Potato,

Yeah I first heard about it years ago. I think we were all having a similar discussion on the blog about the arena getting profit off charging concert promoters for use of the stadium and someone brought up this “ruling”.

Sounds like “da hui” mentality that ends up screwing UH over in so many other ways.

  163. Couch potato September 14, 2011 1:28 pm

someone tells me to stick my hand in a fire, i’m not going to try. just playing madeinhawaii, jd can try this out but like i said i don’t think it will work out. you can’t even get the dorm students to go to the game even with a free bus ride and ticket.

  164. Nalani September 14, 2011 1:30 pm

    Hi Hawaiian Bod!

Ok I’ll weigh in on the discussion. Since I do promote concerts for a living!….

It’s tough now and most of our shows barely break even. But not doing them takes you out of the loop and eventually the economy turns around and you’ve built up a following, so you need to keep it up.

SSC is a great venue. The key to making it successful is a radio partner. They can provide a lot more exposure than you can afford to purchase. And they can get the artists to perform for little or nothing, trading favors, etc. But most of these types of concerts that are very successful (ie Birthday Bash) have very cheap tix price and have lots of alcohol. Usually involves a Beer sponsor to sweeten the deal. So if they are ok going there, they could make money with the college crowd and their friends. But the price tag of these heavy alcohol events is an overall downgrade in the event and most of us wouldn’t attend. Not to mention just the additional parking revenue on any given day when the SSC isn’t being utilized. That really adds up.

Ok that’s my two cents. I’m sure UHs radio partners would love to try this out. The Shell has become very run down and new venues are needed.

  165. Kevin September 14, 2011 1:31 pm

I’m saying I’m for UH trying to open up the arena for ALL home games but if they’re gonna do it, they should do it full BLAST as I said here:

Because quite frankly without all those things, really looking at opening a massive venue of that size up for less than 200 people. Is that fiscally responsible for a cash-strapped department?

To me, if you want to take people out of their comfort zone (i.e. watching games on PPV at home and paying the 55-60 bucks, or at the bars ) you need to offer more than a venue and mediocre food.

So if UH does all this that I highlighted in bold in the blockquoted statement, then I think it will worth the time.

There is nothing wrong with trying, but some decent thought needs to be put into something to eliminate failures.

Recognize potential obstacles and plan it out to eliminate them. None of this “eh I won’t worry about it”… that’s nonsense.

Sun Tzu… ART OF WAR. It’s a good book.

    Nalani,

I think more people are recognizing what you are saying about older venues as we’re seeing more trickle into Aloha Stadium and Kaka’ako Waterfront Plaza.

But what do you mean by “radio partner” in that sense? Do you mean radio partner as in promotion for concerts? I think the ONLY current radio partner UH has is KKEA 1420 and they’re obviously not a music station.

  169. Kevin September 14, 2011 1:35 pm

    Reading comprehension….

  172. d1shima September 14, 2011 1:38 pm

1420 is part of a group of stations

  173. Couch potato September 14, 2011 1:41 pm

  174. djmitcho September 14, 2011 1:50 pm

Met Russell Harding and sat with him during the UW game. Really nice guy. Hope Scott gets the chance to touch the ball a little more on Saturday.

  175. Nalani September 14, 2011 1:52 pm

The radio partner can be any station they choose. Usually one that reaches the demographic who would attend the concert they are planning. For instance, Na Leo has partnered very effectively with KUMU and KSSK since they are listened to throughout the day in offices statewide. Instead of just buying time, you share the revenues with the station. Gives them more incentive to plug the event above and beyond.

And sorry Kev, I just figured out you’re talking about a broadcast event at the SCC. Sort of the same idea. But following it up with a cool little party with entertainment that people can hang out at and enjoy sounds fun to me!

  176. Kevin September 14, 2011 2:01 pm

    Nalani,

Ah, well not just for SSC hosting UH games, but being open to hosting concerts as well. With your folks relationship to the those radio stations, it does serve the demographic of those that are fans of your music like you said.

Now if UH wants to start doing concerts they would need to do the same in identifying what kinds of concerts they want to host, rock, metal, reggae, Hawaiian, pop, etc.. Then they need to form the relationship with the proper stations.

OR they could try to form relationships with ALL stations, but I think there might be a conflict of interest with opposing stations. I don’t think they’re all clearwire.

Anyway, I see what your saying and it makes sense.

SSC is a great facility and should be used to the maximum.

    — UH vs UNLV Tsai-ko TV-gate Announcement —

    Location: Café Anasia (info below)

Date: This Saturday, September 17, 2011

Time/Instructions: Game starts at 4:00pm HST; come a little early for parking; doors open at 2pm

Address: 2227 S. Beretania Street; WHAT ARE THE CROSS STREETS ON EITHER SIDE? I drive down Beretania at least 20 times a month and have never seen the bar.

  178. Kevin September 14, 2011 2:13 pm

You know one side effect of trying something without planning and consideration of potential challenges in this instance is having people feel they wasted their time and putting off more UH fans.

So, as I’ve said so many times already, trying is good. Trying ANYTHING is good, ONLY IF YOU PLAN FOR IT.

So if you put it all out there and you fail at least you won’t be wasting time, money, and man power time and time again improving on something where you could have avoided those problems in the first place.

If you cannot eliminate and solve all problems before they happen, at least you’ve reduced the amount of time needed to make corrections for the next time.

  179. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 14, 2011 2:15 pm

In one of my posts earlier this week, I stated that I had sent the following e-mail to Jim Donovan on Monday, September 5. I have not received a reply so it’s not likely to happen this Saturday.

    Jim:

Here’s my suggestion for the September 17 game with UNLV

Let folks into The Stan at 3 pm with open seating – UH students with ID free, UH football season ticket-holders free, UH Wahine volleyball ticket-holders free – however, place a very large donation jar at the entrance with a couple of cheerleaders or someone wearing a Warrior football uniform – any former players around? – actively soliciting donations. You could easily raise several thousand $$$ this way.

Everyone else – charge $5 with kids under 12 free. If people who do not already have volleyball tickets and want to stay for the volleyball match, then sell them upper level tickets which includes watching the football game.

Open up several of the refreshment stands + beer sales.

At the conclusion of the football game, everyone without a volleyball ticket has to leave and those of us who do must move to our regular seals.

Meanwhile, the volleyball match will probably start about half an hour later than scheduled, but that hasn’t been a problem with the various tournaments so far.

If this works, then we definitely can do this for the some – or all – of the four remaining away games – especially the Nevada game on November 12 which should end around 2:30 pm HI-time. There is a volleyball match starting at 7 pm, but most people will not hang around unless there’s something going on like a concert or a some other band fund-raiser in Ching Field.

Perhaps Gib Arnold could be persuaded to have an open practice after the Nevada football game which could be used as a subtle ticket-marketing event.

I’ll be glad to help out in any way needed on any of the away dates, but I would appreciate being asked as soon as you & your staff decide to go ahead with this.

RIGHT OF REFUSAL TO BLAISDELL ARENA:

Most recent article I could find regarding this.

Via Honolulu Advertiser article (dated February 2010):

The city’s Neal Blaisdell Center would continue to be the main indoor entertainment venue on O’ahu under a measure that advanced out of the City Council’s Zoning Committee recently.

The committee moved out Resolution 09-341, which allows for the University of Hawai’i-Mänoa to carry out its 2007 long-range development plan. The master plan calls for 18 construction or major renovation projects in the next 10 years on the campus.

Language in the legislation requires UH to give the Blaisdell Center “first right of refusal” whenever it is approached about an event of a commercial nature at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Sheriff center is prohibited from holding commercial events under a clause in the original legislation that allowed the arena to be built in 1994. A few commercial ventures, including the 1996 Miss Universe Pageant, have been held at the center, but only under a “gentleman’s agreement” with city leaders, said UH Assistant Vice Chancellor Eric Crispin.

Several council members said they were concerned that the new language would create a competitive situation with Blaisdell.

But Crispin said that wasn’t the university’s intent. “This essentially documents the de facto arrangement we’ve had,” he said.

Crispin said UH wants the flexibility for those unique circumstances when Blaisdell cannot accommodate a firm commercial event date, or when a commercial event fits better at Sheriff.

    A-Joe…

Aloha my bradduh. I can understand JD’s reservations about having the game shown in the SSC. But how about the neighbor islands? After all, Manoa has the only football team amongst all 10 UH campuses in the system. I always wondered why they did not show it at UH-Hilo, Hawaii CC, Maui College, and Kauai CC? I’m sure there are a few bars who still pay the premium on our islands, but holding the games on campus would draw the students in. Those who want the bar will still go to the bar. I guess too much red tape bureaucracy to make something cool like that happen at all the other campuses

All you have to do is enter the name of the place that you seek. Always include the locality, however, broad as it may be. For example, “cafe anasia, honolulu, hawaii”.

The smart program that Google.com has will locate the place before you can finish typing “Hawaii”. It will also give you the address, phone number, and a description of its goods.

  198. A-joe September 14, 2011 5:29 pm

    BIK-

That’s an idea JD could definitely consider.

Speaking of outer island fans, Stretch proposed this idea to JD- have a plane designated to fly outer island fans, to and from on game day/night.

Stretch said allot of outer island fans would love to go to the games. But, being that the games end later than the last flight, fans would have to stay overnight. That’s just added expenses they can’t afford.

But, if the airlines were to re-schedule a normal evening flight at a later time, perhaps it could then be possible. Throw in ground transportation (to and from Aloha Stadium and the airport) and this could be a sweet deal.

Fans could also come in on their own and make arrangements for transportation during the day but, leave on the special last flight as well.

JD said charters may not work but, a simple change in normal scheduled flight times would be achievable.

    It’s an idea to consider.

From sarvicdar in the Sportshawaiiforum – http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=40277

Re-Moniz graded a 99.6 in the Washington game.

Moniz was interviewed on BC’s Show this morning.

BC told him that he graded a 99.6 for his performance against Washington by the UH coaching staff, which was the highest grade a UH quarterback has ever received in a football game.

On hearing this information Moniz attributed his success to his team mates.

BC goes on to tell Moniz that Sarkisian (Washington’s HC) was quoted in the Seattle paper as raving about his performance.

On hearing this information Moniz attributed his success to his team mates, adding that it all starts during the summer workouts. He said the team has worked hard in the off season and that he personally spent a lot more time in the weight room. From another article I read that Moniz also spent a lot of time in the boxing ring, too.

BC brought up the subject if his go-to-receiver (Ostrowski) can’t play this week.

“Somebody will have to step up,” Moniz said. “I give the coaches feedback as to who I think is ready, plus Ostrowski’s my room mate so I’m keeping an eye on his swollen ankle.”

BC broached the subject to Moniz of playing at the next level.

“Sure I look at the NFL as another opportunity, similarly to how I had an opportunity at UH.”

At this point I’m listening to Moniz. And it’s a pleasure. I can sense that when he speaks, the big wheels are spinning in his head. Articulate? Yep. Calm..and absolute joy to listen to. He seems to take everything in stride. Never too up, or never too down.

Lastly,BC broached the subject to Moniz about his fast start against Washington and his slow start against Colorado.

“Maybe it was hot, maybe I ran to much in the CU game, I don’t have an answer,” Moniz concedes. “I do feel our team will get better.”

Keep in mind that this highest means that Moniz did the reads.. made the right choices… threw the right passes to a catch-able place, made the right hand-offs… dumped it when he had to, and scrambled when he should 99.6% of the time. It does NOT mean that the receivers caught the ball.. made the expected YAC… or that the RBs did what they were supposed to. Those are literally.. “out of his hands”…

I did try one of the recommended all you can eat sushi places in LV, Goyemon. I would go back. Besides the sushi, the grilled items were especially good – pork belly, yellow tail, and white tuna. My son ordered a baked dish called dynamite, which I thought was also very tasty. It tasted like it had crab, scallops, and tiny fish eggs in a mayonnaise sauce. My son thought it was too rich however. The AYCE buffet costs a reasonable $27. My wife didn’t want the AYCE and ordered a sushi and mixed assortment platter which was $12. She could barely finish it. The deserts were also good. The restaurant can only sit about 40, so it might be difficult to get in this weekend. They don’t take reservations except for groups of 10 or larger.

We’ll check out Zion National Park tomorrow and return on Friday to catch the Jersey Boys show.
