Rainbow Wahine softball: Heen’s blast takes UCSB opener

By Brian McInnis on April 12, 2019

For Bob Coolen and the Hawaii softball team, 1K is in play on Saturday. Callee Heen blasted a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning shortly after UH faced a rain delay — and a one-run deficit — against UC Santa Barbara on Friday night. It was the difference in a 4-1 win over the Gauchos, as UH (25-10, 6-1 Big West) moved ahead of idle Cal State Fullerton atop the Big West standings. Callee Heen with the three-run […]

Rainbow Wahine softball: Bob Coolen nears 1K at UH

By Brian McInnis on April 11, 2019

To have it happen here — at the place Bob Coolen helped build from the ground up and the field that he used to weed himself — would take a little doing. As it so happens, “doing” is something familiar to this year’s group of Rainbow Wahine. Hawaii (24-10, 5-1 Big West) can give its 28th-year head coach his 1,000th win at Manoa if it can sweep UC Santa Barbara (7-30, 1-5) in three games spanning Friday and Saturday. Otherwise, […]

Rainbow Wahine softball: Heen nabs player of the week

By Brian McInnis on April 8, 2019

Callee Heen’s bat was smoldering as she left the field in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Saturday. Heen batted .571 and knocked in six runs in Hawaii’s three-game Big West sweep of Cal Poly over the weekend. That stat line was good for conference player of the week honors on Monday. It was the first award this season for the UH junior catcher/first baseman and the second of her career. The Hollister, Calif., native hit a home run in the […]

Rainbow Wahine softball gets through gauntlet alive

By Brian McInnis on March 17, 2019

It was a grueling 11 days and 12 games. The Hawaii softball team survived that gauntlet — its last competition before Big West play begins — by going 7-5, thereby completing its nonconference slate at 19-9. Two of the losses were to No. 4 Alabama, one was a one-run defeat to Utah and one came at the hands of Cal ace Kamalani Dung. The last was to SIU-Edwardsville, a team with three local players from which UH took two of […]

Court Sense: Lower campus live blog March 16

By Brian McInnis on March 16, 2019

In terms of variety and quantity, it’s the day of days for Hawaii sports on the Manoa lower campus. Softball against Niagara and No. 4 Alabama. Baseball against Cal State Bakersfield. Water polo against the top-ranked team in the country, USC, that made some headlines lately (you might’ve heard about it). Men’s volleyball against Cal State Northridge. And beach volleyball just off campus at Queen’s Beach. And over in Southern California, the UH women’s basketball team playing UC Davis in […]

Court Sense: Lower campus live blog March 15

By Brian McInnis on March 15, 2019

Another crazy weekend ramps up tonight at the Manoa lower campus. There’s softball against No. 4 Alabama (6 p.m.), baseball against Cal State Bakersfield (6:35 p.m.), and the No. 2 UH men’s volleyball team taking on Cal State Northridge in Big West action (7 p.m.). Check out Jason Kaneshiro’s day-by-day guide here if you’re still trying to figure out what’s what. I’m here to help you keep track of the madness. (And also to tell you if the lower campus […]

Yet another busy week, just add water (polo)

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 12, 2019

And you thought last week was busy around UH’s lower campus. While the UH basketball teams begin their runs in the Big West tournament in California (the men on Thursday and the women on Friday), the on-campus schedule remains packed, including visits by the No. 1 ranked water polo team and the lone undefeated team remaining in Division I softball. The fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team (12-3) returns to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex for its first home match […]

Court Sense: Lower campus live blog March 9

By Brian McInnis on March 9, 2019

The onslaught continues. If anything, it’s ramped up on Saturday. There’s the same trifecta of events going on at the Manoa lower campus — softball, baseball and men’s volleyball. But softball has a doubleheader today (Niagara and SIU-Edwardsville), baseball continues its four-game series against Oregon and volleyball hosts No. 6 Pepperdine to cap its three-day tournament. The UH women’s basketball team already won a big game at CSUN and the men’s team is looking to close the regular season with […]
