Hawaii soccer: Raisa Strom-Okimoto, Addie Steiner meet on the NWSL field

By Brian McInnis on June 29, 2019

Last weekend, former Hawaii soccer standouts Raisa Strom-Okimoto and Addie Steiner made their respective debuts in the National Women’s Soccer League. On Friday, the two former Rainbow Wahine met on the field of play as opponents, marking the first time two UH alumna played in a game in the NWSL (the women’s equivalent of MLS). Steiner’s Seattle Reign came to Salt Lake City to take on Strom-Okimoto’s Utah Royals FC. Both came on as reserves in the Reign’s 2-0 road […]

Hawaii softball: 8 Rainbow Wahine pick up Big West postseason awards

By Brian McInnis on May 14, 2019

The 2019 postseason awards haul was respectable for a Hawaii softball team that put together its best season in six years. Per UH, it was the most Rainbow Wahine players honored in total since 2013, which was the same year UH rejoined the Big West in softball. First baseman/catcher Callee Heen, third baseman Nicole Lopez and pitcher Brittany Hitchcock were named to the All-Big West first team. Catcher Heather Cameron was named to the second team, and Cheeks Ramos (utility) […]

Hawaii softball: 7 seniors get a surprise in final game

By Brian McInnis on May 11, 2019

Bob Coolen figured the time for some lineup trickery was at hand. In his 28 years as Hawaii softball coach, only a handful of times has he had as large a senior class as the seven of 2019. And in those past instances, there’d typically be some kind of conference positioning or overall win-loss consideration that superseded a luxury such as starting every member of a large crop of seniors on senior night. Not this year. This time, UH knew […]

Hawaii softball: UH splits doubleheader with Davis, NCAA berth out of reach

By Brian McInnis on May 10, 2019

It was going to take a lot for the Hawaii softball team to pick up an NCAA tournament berth at the conclusion of this week. For starters, the Rainbow Wahine needed to sweep Thursday’s doubleheader against UC Davis to keep hope of an outright Big West regular-season title alive into Friday’s senior night. Sweeping Davis in three games and having Cal State Fullerton lose out at UC Riverside in three games Friday and Saturday was the only combination that would […]

Hawaii softball: 7 seniors look to make final week count

By Brian McInnis on May 7, 2019

Despite taking its final road series by a count of two games to one, the road to a Big West championship got considerably tougher for the Hawaii softball team. Heading into its final series of the season, at home against UC Davis this week, UH (32-14, 13-5 Big West) trails first-place Cal State Fullerton (35-16, 15-3) by two games with three to play. It actually amounts to a 2.5-game lead for the Titans, who swept UH in a series at […]

Hawaii softball: Nicole Lopez, Wahine snare key victory over Riverside

By Brian McInnis on April 26, 2019

Nicole Lopez’s timely double plays turned the Hawaii softball team’s fortunes around on Friday night. With precious time remaining to make a run in the Big West standings — and coming off a sweep at the hands of nemesis Cal State Fullerton — the Rainbow Wahine needed something to fall their way. Some close plays did in a 2-0 win for UH (28-13, 9-4 Big West) over UC Riverside (23-20, 5-8). It ended a three-game slide that saw the Wahine drop […]

Hawaii softball: Bob Coolen still enjoying a grand old time

By Dave Reardon on April 16, 2019

Coach Bob Coolen says he doesn’t want Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium named after him. “Just put a seat up there for me,” Coolen said with a laugh on Tuesday, talking to reporters before his University of Hawaii team took off for a three-game road set at Cal State Fullerton starting Friday. Coolen is focused on what is ahead, but still happy to talk about his 1,000th victory as the Hawaii coach on Saturday. The Wahine are riding high with a […]

Rainbow Wahine softball: Coolen joins UH’s 1,000-win club

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 13, 2019

The tribute that followed Bob Coolen’s 1,000th win as Hawaii softball coach provided yet another measure of his legacy with the program. The congratulatory video displayed on the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium scoreboard included messages from former players to come through the Rainbow Wahine program over the last 28 years, several of whom remain active in softball as coaches at various levels from club ball to high school to college. “It’s really nice to see a lot of those players […]
