UH to play Army in four-game series

UH and Army have agreed to meet in a four-game football series: Sept. 11, 2010 in West Point, N.Y.; Nov. 30, 2013 at Aloha Stadium; Sept. 15, 2018 in West Point; Nov. 30, 2019 in Honolulu.

This is how UH will open the 2010 season: at home against USC, on the road against Army and then at Colorado.

Defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea is today’s guest on the Warrior Beat Show. Rocky will answer questions posed here and on the show’s “Cover It Live” section. The show begins at approximately noon. Please join us.

* * *

If things go according to schedule, offensive lineman Kainoa LaCount will participate in the Warriors’ training camp.
LaCount, who last played at College of the Canyons, has spent the past year earning the credits necessary to meet NCAA standards.
LaCount has one obligation remaining, an online course (through Los Angeles Harbor College) that ends June 7.
LaCount said he has two years to play two UH seasons.

I’m at UH yesterday, and slotback Dustin Blount asked me to stand still. Very still.
I do.
Then I feel a whoosh over my head.
Wideout Royce Pollard, who was behind me, jumped over me.

This is Blount’s way of saying he’s cheering for the Lakers:

Last week, a certain sportscaster said: “I went to your blog, and you had pictures of people. Who are these people? WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?” Which is why I’m running this shot:

Happy birthday to d1島 and Peaches and Bill Stutzmann.

* * *

So sorry to hear about the passing of Fale Laeli’s mom.

It’s also sad to hear that Ethan Zohn is suffering from stage 2 Hodgkin’s disease. Zohn, winner of “Survivor Africa,” was a member of the Hawai‘i Tsunami soccer team in the 1990s.

    Wow!

It’s 5 am in Hawaii, and our blog host is already hard at work.

Good thing you’re not 6′ 3″. Otherwise, there might have been more than a whoosh.

Blogging in from around Erie PA. On the road to Ohio.

    ST,

My son and his girlfriend (who lives in Ohio) just finished college (in Pittsburgh). They’ll be moving to California.

The custom agent at the border to NY took a long time before he let us through. He was surprised to see a car with Hawaii plates entering from Canada.

    I can imagine the headache.
I heard the Final Four in Detroit was a pain because some of the teams (and their fans) stayed in Canada.

  13. Stephen Tsai May 19, 2009 5:14 am

Then again, you can gamble in Canada, so there’s the tradeoff.

You take the good, you take the bad,
you take them both and there you have
The Facts of Life, the Facts of Life.

There’s a time you got to go and show
You’re growin’ now you know about
The Facts of Life, the Facts of Life.

    When the world never seems
to be livin up to your dreams
    And suddenly you’re finding out
the Facts of Life are all about you, you.

It takes a lot to get ’em right
When you’re learning the Facts of Life. (learning the Facts of Life)
Learning the Facts of Life (learning the Facts of Life)
    Learning the Facts of Life.

rocky, whats the normal routine for you and the rest of the DL for unsupervised offseason workouts? hope you guys are working hard! good luck this season.

  27. whitey May 19, 2009 6:06 am

went downstairs to look at the futures for the BCS and they get bsu at 80-1 to win the bcs national title. i sat down, puked, laughed, then realize that a WAC team has better odds than most of the other bcs schools. school like big 10 ia is listed at 200-1. looks like even the oddsmaker don’t think the bcs schools are worthy of the national title, but a team from the WAC is more deserving. i gotto go check this again, because my eyes and stomach is back to normal (which ain’t saying much).

  28. d1島 May 19, 2009 6:10 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Family!

Now that school is winding down, and work is calming down, I can finally catch up on the blog. It’s been way too long!

  42. madeinhawaii May 19, 2009 7:04 am

I wonder how much the bet was between Blount and Pollard?

    Morning everyone.

  43. haka May 19, 2009 7:25 am

Glad to hear that Kainoa has a good chance to be in camp. He will be a great addition to the O-line depth chart. I don’t see him breaking into the starting lineup right away however. I think that it will be very hard for him to take one of the tackle positions away at this point. Eventually though, whether through hard work (hopefully) or attrition, he will be a big contributor.

    Go Warriors!

  44. jm2375 May 19, 2009 7:27 am

    Happy Birthday d1 and Peaches!

    mih – #42 😆

Hope that he and Napeahi can make it to camp.

Both can provide immediate help for the OL.

  47. Garret May 19, 2009 7:30 am

  49. madeinhawaii May 19, 2009 7:38 am

I gotta wonder who the finalists are for the Women’s Basketball Coach. Has it beenl hush hush to perhaps keep Bolla out of the loop? Or worse, because the high mucka-muckas have put selecting a woman as the 1st criteria over who’s best as Ferd suggests? The latter would be a travesty.

  50. djmitcho May 19, 2009 7:38 am

Happy Birthday to d1, Peaches and Bill Stutzman

    timuua, ciao e grazie.
No BG said he would ignore my posts 🙁 he is a retired person who has taken an about-face to learning by his own admission. Look BG maybe cantankerous and loudily officious but his pitch is so ludicrous as to render him harmless. Let him bark–he is a colorful characature and wont affect my posting 🙂

  63. Kekoa May 19, 2009 8:12 am

    timuua ~ Good Morning!

    Tsai-
The bad news is that it looks like you were in “over your head” during that encounter with Blount and Pollard. The good news is : DAYUM!!! Some Warriors got MAD athletic skills, jumpin; over a full grown blog host like that!
    😆 😆 😆 😆

Happy Birthday Bill Stutzman! **Big birthday shaka** Best wishes! Glad to have you on our sideline.

  71. Kekoa May 19, 2009 8:40 am

mih ~ Yep! He does secure our spot…BG has done many more good deeds for the fans of this blog than he cares to take credit for.

I have to disagree with you wf2. BG is neither “cantakerous” nor any of the other things you describe him of being.

I and others of this blog, take the time to really get to know each other in the real world. Maybe if you joined us at one of our gatherings you’d get to know us better. There have been several posters who’ve extended an invitation…so who’s being cantakerous?

  72. madeinhawaii May 19, 2009 8:57 am

    Oh yeah…

happy happy HAPPY Birthday … peaches… d1… and bill… !!! and to anyone else who’s reading and celebrating a birthday today… may you enjoy a memorable day… and a fabulous year in the making!

  73. warriorfanny2 May 19, 2009 8:59 am

WAC Tournament will be the last UH contest of the school year…and then, our warrior boyz will begin their 8-week training cycle at Cooke (for those that stay home) and the skill guyz can be seen during “voluntary” passing drills, prolly in the pm.

I will be monitoring the summer-cycle and will spend several weeks on the continent attending several PGA Ts (Bethpage and Warrick Hills). As in Ponte Vedra (gators) I usually visit D!A programs nearby so Im looking at College Station and A2.
Michigan has one of the best strength and conditioning programs in college football.
Mike Barwis is in his second season as the director of strength and conditioning with the Michigan football program. He oversees a staff that includes six full-time assistants, two part-time assistant and multiple interns.

Rich Rodrigues brought Mike to A2 as part of the deal and immediately asked for millions in improvements for the weight room to add to the $300 m face-lift in progress for the football factory. Funds were released immediately to meet Barwis specs.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?id=3293269

Barwis worked at West Virginia University for 14 years and coordinated every facet of the department’s athletic sports conditioning program during that time. He spent five years as the strength and conditioning coach for the Mountaineers’ football program (2003-07) and seven seasons for the men’s basketball program (2001-07). Barwis also worked with Olympic athletes in 18 different sports during his tenure and was the school’s director of strength and conditioning for varsity sports prior to his appointment with the football and basketball teams.

Barwis has coached 22 National Strength and Conditioning (NSCA) All-Americans since 1999, and was one of 10 coaches to receive the 2002 Bronze Award from the NSCA certification commission. He has trained college All-American, professional, Olympic, national and international competitors and medalists in wrestling, track and field, cross country, soccer, football, basketball, baseball, motor cross, cycling, boxing, ice hockey, tennis, swimming and diving, gymnastics, crew, bodybuilding and and rifle during his career. In addition, Barwis has been published in numerous journals, magazines and newspapers.

A Philadelphia, Pa., native, Barwis earned his undergraduate degree in exercise physiology from West Virginia University in 1996 and his master’s degree in athletic coaching with an emphasis in strength and conditioning in 1998. He also completed course work in the area of anatomy and physiology at Temple University, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the NSCA.

    cantakerous?

    bg? no way.

retired? semi, considering his separation of service from the armed forces after a long illustrious career. however, not fully retired as he is too young to receive social security benefits.

but, you got the wrong guy description of one of our finest.

he may be one of the finest men to walk this earth.

  79. warriorfanny2 May 19, 2009 9:19 am

    kekoa, aloha brah.
    mahalo for the invite….raincheck.
Ill be in contact w u sometime this summer for a get-together at a venue near Kaupo Village (baby maks).

I didnt say anything about BG that he didnt hasten to declare himself. He was the kibitzer, not I.
Further, I didnt call him anti-social I said he was grumpy (cantankerous). How else can you describe a person who declares that detail, logic and reason are wasteful exercises?
The guy is totally off-the wall!
Im not bothered at all, lol, but i do have opinion of character.

  80. Kazz May 19, 2009 9:22 am

    WWE vs NBA

I posted this late night on yesterday’s blog and if this does go into litigation, the WWE will win.

WWE has a contractual obligation to USA Network every Monday night to air their “Monday Night Raw” two-hour broadcast and they secured the Pepsi Center fair and square. WWE, Inc. Chairman Vince McMahon, Jr. is sending already sending his production team and travel roster of over 200 personnel and over 14 semi-trucks of television equipment over to Denver right now.

It will be interesting to see how this will lay out.

The bottom line is that Kroenke Sports, the owner of the Pepsi Center and the Nuggets organization screwed up big time. Public opinion is one thing, but in the court of law, WWE will win this case if it goes that far.

  85. al May 19, 2009 9:39 am

wf2….no harm intended. one day you come out, talk story, it will all make sense in the end. the common bond of course is sports, in particular, university of hawaii sports that is why we gather round to this site.

    Q for Rocky:

Your thoughts on the new guys?

  96. Jack Flash May 19, 2009 9:58 am

    To WF2-
I really enjoy reading your informative posts, as you do the research that i do not have the time or patience to do myself. For that i thank you! Your opinion of BG will change once you meet him- good guy. The first time i met a lot of these guys face-to-face was at last year’s Tsaiko Anniversary party. Al apologized to me for saying on the blog that i didn’t actually exist (although i knew it was all in fun of course), and i had to literally run away from Mrs. Bulla’s jager shots! Also, i scored some guri-guri and portuguese sausage from Whitey and Duffer in the door prize give-aways. You’ll see what i mean when you make it to an event or two. And by the way, the only cantankerous one is Kazz… after a UH loss!

  119. Kazz May 19, 2009 10:35 am

    Rocky,

Aloha braddah. Good to see you back on the field again this past spring. I was wondering what exactly is the attitude of the defensive line this season as there are a lot of new, but talented people on board?

    Mahalo!

  120. Kazz May 19, 2009 10:37 am

Let’s be clear about this. I am not “grumpy” after a loss… I’m… Well.. Yeah ok fine… 😛

Do you see it as being any hindrance to you during the upcoming season?? and I echo the words of some of my fellow Tsaikos…who do you see as the leaders on defense this year?? and that I’m glad you are back and will be able to contribute greatly towards this year’s accomplishments…

“Obviously there is a tremendous military presence in the state of Hawai‘i and I have a connection with the University of Hawai‘i,” said Ellerson. “We’ve talked about having a presence west of the Mississippi and Hawai‘i is about as far west of the Mississippi as you can go and still speak English.

    🙄

  127. Garret May 19, 2009 10:51 am

Scheduling Army is GREAT for UH! Great job by JD! Playing the service academies is great for attendance, for national attention, and for all those in the military in Hawaii. Even more important, the service academies do not need to worry about the travel expense to Hawaii, which helps with the scheduling.

  128. Garret May 19, 2009 10:52 am

Greg Camarillo is still recovering from offseason surgery so Bess is going to be practicing with the *first team* for quite some time at Miami!

-Greg Camarillo wasn’t working out today but expects to be 100% – physically speaking – by training camp.

-Ted Ginn and Davone Bess lined up as first team receivers; while Ernest Wilford worked with the second team.

  129. Jack Flash May 19, 2009 10:55 am

Jim Donovan- great job scheduling Army! Keep ’em coming…

  130. Garret May 19, 2009 10:55 am

Miami wants to use Bess as their slot receiver, but they will have to use him at starting WR if Camarillo is out and the rookies cannot beat out Bess. If I remember correctly, Bess had more than double the catches per game when he was a starting WR instead of the slot receiver…and Bess’ contract is up after this season so it would be great for him to have more catches.

With Greg Camarillo rehabbing, Davone Bess ran as the starting flanker on the first day of Dolphins OTAs Tuesday.

Camarillo (ACL, meniscus surgery) participated in “some drills,” but is being limited. His status for training camp is very much up in the air. The Dolphins would prefer Bess in the slot, but he could overtake Camarillo outside with a strong offseason. Bess is sure handed and knows how to get open.

  131. Garret May 19, 2009 10:57 am

It appears that Camarillo won’t even have his confidence back for training camp, which means that if Bess does well in OTAs and training camp that he’ll have a shot at the starting WR job…which would mean a LOT more money after the season.

Camarillo said he expects to be 100 percent healthy by the start of training camp, but admitted being 100 percent healthy and confident, “doesn’t come until much later.” Obviously there is the mental battle players must wage to being confident they can take a hit with no adverse effects. That battle is separate and apart from the physical battle of getting completely healthy. How’s that for an amateur psychological analysis?

  132. Garret May 19, 2009 10:58 am

Four years with Army on the schedule really helps fill the pukas…

  133. Ralph May 19, 2009 10:59 am

Castillo signs 6 in women golf….Sweden, Alaska, Canada, Virginia and 2 from Hawaii….they are all tournament tested but their game score average was not posted… I hope they all shoot at least in the 70’s cuz i’ve seen scores in the tournament 5 some where UH is back by about 100 strokes to the quality teams…

  134. Ralph May 19, 2009 11:03 am

maybe Stretch, Duffer and Layson can shed some light on collegiate golf…we got lots of youth talent in Hawaii that go on to do very well on the mainland and our courses are one of the best in the world…question is, which 5 or 7 courses were the golfers using in Hawaii courtesy of the golf courses…

  135. Ralph May 19, 2009 11:06 am

since we have women golf, swimming, diving, and water polo, I can’t see why we can’t develop a top ten program…i’m sure each program receives the allowed number of NCAA scholarships like the other top collegiate teams, we have the coaches, so we just got to boost the recruiting budget and let the coaches bring in the best talent…

  136. Garret May 19, 2009 11:07 am

So many times we discussed the advantages of scheduling the Academy teams while HF was at UH and nothing seemed to get done…I’m glad that JD got this done and it is a good example of what he can do with scheduling. And getting four games at once shows how he’ll work for future schedules instead of throwing something together at the last minute like the guy before him.

  137. madeinhawaii May 19, 2009 11:09 am

The University of Hawai‘i and Army have agreed to a four-game home-and-home football series beginning in 2010, UH Athletics Director Jim Donovan and Army Athletics Director Kevin Anderson announced on Tuesday. The Warriors and Black Knights have met once prior in 2003.

The series begins on Sept. 11, 2010 in West Point, N.Y., and continues Nov. 30, 2013 in Honolulu, Sept. 15, 2018 in West Point and concludes on Nov. 30, 2019 in Honolulu.

“We’re very pleased to have this home and home arrangement with Army put in place,” Donovan said. “With Rich Ellerson being a former UH football player and now head coach at Army, it adds even more to this series besides the fact that its an academy school and those programs always draw well in Hawai‘i. I’m glad we were able to get it done and we’re looking forward to some great games.”

  139. Ralph May 19, 2009 11:13 am

we got navy this upcoming season but are they coming back in the future or is this a one shot home series?

Wow… first game is 9/11 in NY.. is that a disadvantage? Who’d wanna beat the stuffings out of ‘Army’ on 9/11 ? in New York?

    😯

Oh crap. I wonder how many people in New York still remember that Hawaii was voted as the LEAST patriotic state in the union by some CNN poll… I guess the sales of American flags in Hawaii around 09/11/01 weren’t up to par with states like Texas or… Texas… 🙄

Well many on that side of the country will view this game as some kind of “international clash” anyway.

  146. Ralph May 19, 2009 11:19 am

yep Homey, knew that, the polo team has been very successful but they need to up their level one more notch cuz usc, ucla and stanford is one notch in recruiting above everyone else for the last few years…polo is like men vb, few quality teams, so an above average record gets you a ranking.

  147. Ralph May 19, 2009 11:21 am

the Na Wahine Water Polo team finished 19-10 and I think they ended up 4th ranked after losing in the semi finals…

  148. al May 19, 2009 11:22 am

does women’s track n field offer scholarships?

We should make a drinking game out of that away Army game on 09/11.

We take a shot everytime someone in the crowd holds up a sign that says: “Is Hawaii even a state?”.

We’d be drunk during the pre-game show.

  151. al May 19, 2009 11:24 am

    Hi Everybody –

When I was first introduced to this blog, seeing names regularly like “Bulla”, “Wreck”, “Kekoa”, “Homey”, “Kazz”, “BG”, “Al”, “Jack Flash”, “D1”, “Garret”, “Stretch”, “Jason” and many, many more, and reading their posted contributions to the blog was informative and intriguing. I tried to imagine what these individuals looked like and also what kind of personalities they possessed. I admit that I was skeptical about some of them at first. It was fortunate for me that I decided that, yes, I wanted to meet them personally at cc’s, kk’s and T-gates. That, my friends, is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Perhaps if we keep the deep devotion and love of UH Warrior Football as one of the foundations upon which lifetime friendships can be formed, I can personally assure you that the character/personalities of the above-named Tsaikos (and also of those I left out but you know who you are)will open your eyes and deepen your understanding of how so many diverse individuals can become such close and treasured friends…should you choose to meet/talk with them face to face. Accept the invite to “come out and play”… it will change your life for the better!

I’m sure it will be a very proud moment for Mr. A-house to be present when the Warriors take the field against the Cadets.

homey and ralph don’t go to disneyland anymore…..they can’t get on half of the rides and that silly teacups makes them barf up all the churros they ate.

  192. al May 19, 2009 12:43 pm

homey and ralph go to mcdonald’s for lunch.
they approach the ordering counter…after an hour passes, finally, homey climbs up on ralph’s shoulders and asks, “when is someone gonna take our order.?”

  193. al May 19, 2009 12:45 pm

hey, i am sorry. i just made them up. took me a few minutes to get the punchline right. it could have taken longer, thank goodness i don’t have short term memory like ralph and homey.

  199. BG May 19, 2009 1:00 pm

Kekoa, DPK, MIH, al, Jack Flash, Jay, and others….mahalo for the support. I love how this blog can support without a corresponding personal attack as can often be seen elsewhere. The people that know me also know that I don’t indulge or condone personal attacks. If anyone would like to, go back to last night’s blog…around 7:15pm and follow the thread. There are no disparaging remarks or name calling on my part. That would be a waste of precious time on the blog.

There are few places that are as tolerant as this blog when it comes to genders (all 3), ages, races, locations, social strata, and interests. It doesn’t matter much what my views are as the WB doesn’t revolve around me. It DOES matter what a certain short host wants. I understand that he wants tolerance and a blog that has a place for (almost) everyone. However, I don’t think he requires everyone to read or respond to every post. I prefer to exercise that freedom.

  200. al May 19, 2009 1:03 pm

  203. not an expert May 19, 2009 1:05 pm

    Winning:

    What is the magic formula?

TALENTED PLAYERS with a wanting to win attitude and not wanting to lose and all the other necessary things that one needs to do.

When time to compete have the attitude that I will play to win cause I hate to lose and play with all your emotion. Just don’t show up.

The players who don’t play to be the best supportive teammate. (Check out the benches and you see a majority of them not cheering on their teammates.) Why they don’t cheer is probably because they believe they should be playing.

Coaches putting their talent together to bring about the best team possible that will increase the chances of winning.

In summary although this is a topic than can cover a 1000 page book, a team needs talented players and a coach to bring this talent together to win.

Hawaii may have the coaches at times but never enough talent on a team to be a top contender year in year out.

Give most of the UH coaches the talent of every champion in any college sport the past 12 months and I am sure the result would be at least 80% of them taking the top honors too. You know the 80/20 rule.

  204. (Jesse)James May 19, 2009 1:06 pm

    Stretch & Kekoa:

I am thinking travel plans for the 9/11/2010 game at West Point (never liked them ring knockers) should include a visit to Foxwoods and the other big casino in Connecticut before flying to Vegas or other points before going to Denver, Colorado for the 9/18/10 game.

dang, it looks very much like 2009 with Wazzu and UNLV.

  206. (Jesse)James May 19, 2009 1:07 pm

Boy, the opening of the 2010 season is looking pretty rough…USC here…then Colorado at home and Army at home….whew….

  211. (Jesse)James May 19, 2009 1:33 pm

I always have to respect those service academy guys though…the play for the love of the game…most won’t get an NFL shot….but all (okay most) will serve our country…

  212. Jason May 19, 2009 1:33 pm

Happy birthday to d1shima, Peaches, and Mr. Stutzmann!

Hey, I never got any cake for my birthday. That reminds me of the time I wanted an ice cream cake for my birthday as a kid. Never got it. No wonder I promised my oldest niece I’d get her one for her next birthday … 😀

It’s great to hear that we have a deal with Army. And like many others have said, I hope there comes a time when we get a service academy every year on our schedule.

And that’s pretty impressive of Royce Pollard to jump over Stephen. Now, let’s see Brett Symonds jump over homey …

  213. homey ℞ May 19, 2009 1:33 pm

Yeah, but the Warriors will have two years to get ready for them… 😉 … I wish.

From last year and this year’s recruiting, did McMackin get the personnel he needs for USC in 2010? I think we lose pretty much our entire O-line, Qback, and a number of key running backs and a couple of receivers.

  232. madeinhawaii May 19, 2009 3:05 pm

Oh yeah.. and I stuck Chris Black on the wrong end of the field. He should be in the Defense roster.

Except for a couple of slotbacks…it looks like our entire 1st team Offense might graduate next year. Hope they get to rotate in a lot of the second and third team players this season or USC will be on heck of a long game.

    ralph,

you are right, lots of hawaii talent doing well on the mainland , stephanie kono of ucla comes to mind. in fact after round 1 of ncaa womens champ., britney choy of new mexico and stephanie kono of ucla are t7 after round 1 of ncaa womens champ. shooting 1 over 73’s. amanda wilson of arizona is t38. regarding the 7 courses, ask st, he could know which courses.

    HEY BREW808!

Let’s try to go over 300!

  298. brew808 May 19, 2009 8:21 pm

So…. Foxwoods is closer than AC to West Point? 🙄

  299. brew808 May 19, 2009 8:27 pm

….I was counting on LaCount! I’m glad that Kainoa is taking care of business (grades and school work). Two years to play 2, may still work – but get the degree and make the contacts! Like Rocky said in today’s Wai/Tsai Show – take advantage of being a Warrior player, a local “hero”, and a college education. 😀

  300. brew808 May 19, 2009 8:28 pm

I know Diogenes is just waiting to pounce on….

A-House Ohana ~ So sorry, out to dinner with my main squeeze. I’ll give you a shout later with the details.

  302. brew808 May 19, 2009 8:34 pm

I know many of you have commented on the Warrior football schedule for next year. Let me spin it slightly differently….

Consider the tail-end of 2009 FOLLOWED BY the 2010 line-up and you get:

    11/28/09………….NAVY
    12/05/09………….WISCONSIN
    Dec09/Jan10……Bowl Game?
    09/04/10………….USC
    09/11/10………….@ Army
    09/18/10………….@ Colorado

    😯 😀 😯

  303. brew808 May 19, 2009 8:36 pm

    I would make fun of #300 and the “main squeeze”….. but I will refrain…. 🙄 😆 😳

  304. brew808 May 19, 2009 8:41 pm

I think I will use the W/L record for those six games (See #301) as a measure of the overall health and success of the UH Football program. 3-3 is good, 4-2 is where I hope they are, and anything better is all gravy with whip cream and sprinkles…. 😀 😯 😆

    What do you think? 🙄

  305. brew808 May 19, 2009 8:43 pm

Okay…. got to check in back on campus. We’re back to running 24/7, or trying to…. 🙄

  306. Kekoa May 19, 2009 8:48 pm

Brew ~ My ‘main squeeze’ is old school Tita. She could pound you into next Tuesday with one swing. Good thing you decided to hold your tongue, because she will be in the bay area next month…she would track you down!

Would you be traveling to the West Point game?

  307. Garret May 19, 2009 8:53 pm

But, I thought JD said he was not interested in going back East? Or was that no more games out there if they did not reciprocate? Heck, it does not matter.

    wafan,

If I remember correctly, JD did not say that UH wouldn’t play any team back East. I think he said that UH wouldn’t play highly ranked teams back East.

  308. Garret May 19, 2009 8:55 pm

Pisa is going to be visiting with the Bears tomorrow–his old coaches with the Rams are there. It is important to note that the Chicago D *wants* undersized, mobile LBs.

Tinoisamoa played weak-side linebacker the last few seasons for the Rams but broke into the league as a second-round pick from Hawaii playing on the strong side for Smith. He became the only rookie in franchise history to lead the team in tackles that season. He was moved to the weak side the next season after Smith departed for the Bears, but returned to play the strong side again in 2005.

One reason cited for his departure in St. Louis was his size. Listed at 6-1, 240 pounds, reports stated he played closer to 225 pounds last season. Smith generally looks for undersized linebackers in his scheme, and the addition of Tinoisamoa would create even more competition at strong-side linebacker where Nick Roach is expected to battle Hunter Hillenmeyer for the starting job. Hillenmeyer was the starter for the first seven games before Roach replaced him. Right now, it stands to be one of the few true position battles in training camp. Adding Tinoisamoa would give Smith even more depth at the club’s position of strength.

  309. Garret May 19, 2009 8:56 pm

If Chicago doesn’t give Pisa the offer he’s looking for, it looks like Pisa’s next visit will be to the Eagles.

Tim Graham of ESPN.com reports that Tinoisamoa will also visit Philadelphia. That’s interesting because the Rams didn’t view him as a fit for their defense and Spagnuolo is running the defense in St. Louis that he learned with the Eagles under Jim Johnson and then took to the New York Giants.

  310. Garret May 19, 2009 8:59 pm

The California ballot measures did not pass today, which means that SDSU, SJSU, and all the public Universities in California will be getting *big* budget cuts very soon. This will have a direct impact on their Athletic Departments, and SDSU was already hurting for money before this. The California State University system looks to have a $410 million cut in funding…ouch!

San Diego State athletics will look at making cuts in travel expenses and possibly scheduling road games closer to home if voters reject ballot measures in today’s special election.

SDSU athletics already had made a 5-percent reduction in its allocation from the university general fund, which had been projected to be around $6 million this past year. Athletics is planning an additional 3-percent cut or more if the propositions to deal with the state budget crisis fail.

For example, the SDSU football team usually travels by plane when it plays at UNLV. With cuts, it would go by bus instead to save money. Chuck Lang, SDSU’s assistant athletic director of business administration, said SDSU would look at traveling by bus instead of plane for any games within 300 miles.

Cuts in SDSU athletics could be mild in comparison to cuts elsewhere at SDSU and other schools.

Many universities have dropped athletic teams because of economic pressures during the recession, including Washington, which cut swimming, and Northern Iowa, which cut baseball. But cutting athletic teams isn’t viable at SDSU without dropping out of the NCAA’s Division I. SDSU fields the minimum number of Division I men’s teams (six) and plans to add two new women’s sports to comply with CSU gender-equity guidelines.

My cousin Gil Furtado lives across the Hudson from the Point, so we will prolly be Headquartered there and recon the Donald’s Casino on an overnighter. Same as conducting raids on the Indian gaming huts at Foxwood.

I am serious about trying to get some face time with Coach Ellerson before the game. Cousin Gil is a retired Foreign Service guy, he might be able to pull some strings. You’ll enjoy meeting his wife. She is a human dynamo, much like Mrs. A-House!

I’ll check on tailgate plans and get something locked in that will be in a central location close to the Stadium. We’ve got plenny time to plan.

    Breakthrough or Burst.
It’s that time of the WAC baseball season–the time when bubbles burst. So, can our bowboyz pick it up one more time…or have they run out of gas?

“This has been a roller coaster season for this team” explained a befuddled Jim Leahey, Hawaii’s play-by-play voice for over 25 years.
Pal Eldridge offered, “Maybe they need to take a day off, go to the beach and just relax together”.

After another embarrassing loss Sunday to a team 18 games below .500, Mike Trapasso darted-out of the dugout carefully searching for eye contact with the umpires and flashed hasty-shaka signs that were lowered below his belt, to each member of the crew, trying hard to disquise the anquish on his face. You could see the pain.

You got to feel for our coaches–they have brought their team to near cresendo, only to see them collapse before their very eyes. In a jam-packed house that Les build.
Against a team they will face again Thursday @ 7pm.

This is one season where our destiny has to be found by our players. We all know they can do it, cuz they have–31 times….and hit over 61 HRs in route, more than any other Rainbow team in its program history.

Reach down guyz and reach deep.
Its yours to breakthrough or burst!

Tennessee is in trouble over their coach’s twitter account mentioning a recruit by name.

The issue arose when a post was made to Kiffin’s Twitter account after high school prospect J.C. Copeland committed to UT on Tuesday.

The post, which was on twitter for approximately 45 minutes before it was removed, read: “It’s a beautiful day in Knoxville, Tennessee today. I was so exited to hear that J.C. Copeland committed to play for the Vols today!”

Hamilton said the post was made by a newly hired assistant to Kiffin who didn’t consult UT’s compliance office before making the post.

Changing the tax rules for college sports could really make things difficult, especially since almost every school is losing money already.

A Congressional Budget Office study released Tuesday raises questions about commercial activities of the nation’s largest Division I-A sports programs and offers possible changes in tax law should Congress decide to examine the issue.

According to the report, I-A athletic departments get 60% to 80% of their revenue from activities that can be described as commercial.

“Changing the tax treatment of income from certain sources, such as corporate sponsorship income or royalties from sales of branded merchandise, would create less opportunity for shifting revenue or costs, and it would have larger effects on the most commercial sports programs.”

Kind of funny that Notre Dame “accidentally” left out the losing seasons from Charlie Weis’ bio.

Notre Dame omitted the losing seasons from Weis’ year-by-year biography on page 15 of the 2009 Spring Prospectus and page 90 of the 2008 football media guide. Among the omissions is the Irish’s 3-9 2007 season.

“In a lot of cases those decisions are made on the fly, on deadline pressure,” Heisler said. “Whenever we did that in the beginning for Charlie or whatever, I don’t know that there was a reason why we were trying to go back and make it look like something else.”

I’ve been discussing for some time about how SDSU could be left with no D-IA football stadium available to play in and that could be a factor in them dropping football. Now, the news is out about how their stadium lease includes a clause where the city of San Diego can evict SDSU from the stadium if/when the Chargers leave San Diego.

San Diego State’s new lease to play football at Qualcomm Stadium is set to include the right for the city to evict the Aztecs if the Chargers leave San Diego.

In the meantime, the Chargers have been hoping to find a new stadium site in the county. If the Chargers left, the city could consider demolishing the stadium and selling or redeveloping the property.

Redevelopment could take three to five years to plan out, said Jim Barwick, director of the city’s real estate assets department.

The city has lost money on Aztecs games because of poor attendance, leading to lease negotiations described as “difficult” by some involved. Keeping the Aztecs as the lone primary tenant, playing six games a year there, probably wouldn’t make sense for the city financially.

Had the opportunity to visit West Point this year and boy is that campus beautiful. The facilities are top notch. Campus is out in the boonies but it’s nice. It’s about a n hours drive from downtown NYC. However, your best bet is to stay in Newark, NJ, and it’s about a 90 minute ride to West Point. Just take the Garden State Freeway (toll road) in New Jersey and it’ll merge with the New York State freeway. You’ll then go through this huge state park, Bear Mountain, and it leads you right into West Point. Made the trip on successive days and had no problems.
