Gib Arnold is Sunday's chat guest

gib

Newly hired UH basketball coach Gib Arnold will answer your questions tomorrow on the Warrior Beat Show, which will begin at about  9 a.m.

You may post your questions on tomorrow’s blog entry.

Historians remain puzzled as to how Stan Sheriff, a competent athletic director with keen judgment, could have hired Frank Arnold as UH basketball coach in 1985.

The answer could be found in the interview. In conference rooms and living rooms, Arnold was at his best, an enthusiastic motivational speaker and marketer. He knew basketball, and he could sell hope. He knew the WAC (as BYU’s coach) and he knew how to win in the league.

As it turned out, Arnold, to be kind, was not the right fit, and not just because he went 4-24 and 7-21 before Sheriff mercifully pulled the plug on a failed arrangement.

His son, Gib Arnold, who has been named the new UH head coach, also knows how to work the room. His recruiting skills have been on display for several weeks as he has managed to overcome two big obstacles (his father’s UH legacy and the O.J. Mayo fiasco at USC) to win over some critics.

Gib Arnold should be able to recruit. He appears to be a nice guy.  He also has shown he has a convincing answer for every critical question, and there have been many. But can he win immediately? Can he attract fans? Can he justify the coaching change?

Gib Arnold had an impressive debut at today’s news conference to announce his hiring. He promised to implement an NBA-styled offense. He promised to be an aggressive recruiter. And he promised to be involved in the community. He also spoke of his love and respect for his father while admitting the elder Arnold had a difficult tenure at UH.

It was easy to see why athletic director Jim Donovan made his selection.

That said, Bob Nash was fired after failing to ace Donovan’s six-point test, the most important item being an inability to make the Rainbows a winning and profitable program. Arnold — and those who support him, including Donovan — will be judged by the same standards.

Two years ago, did anybody have Gib Arnold and Dana Takahara-Dias in the office pool?

Avis selected Kekoa as the winner of six tickets to today’s baseball game.

bring in good assistant coaches and all of them recruit, but do we have money to send them around the country looking for recruits?

  6. 99club March 20, 2010 12:37 am

Al Davis said it best: “Just win, baby.” The other points will follow.

    Welcome back Coach.

Well, only four losses on the left side of my bracket but twice that many on the right side. Not ready to use it as charcoal starter just yet, but it’s gettin’ close. 🙂

One of the guys in the office pool simply picked based on mascots. His rules were that animals beat humans and within the animals birds were supreme. That’s how he had the Ohio Bobcats beating Georgetown. Long story short: he’s tied for the office lead. But his championship team, Marguette Golden Eagles, is gone.

    Marquette. It’s early here.

  8. al March 20, 2010 12:56 am

gib knows that he will be under the microscope.
he will have at least a three year timeclock.

he’ll need to accomplish things one year at a time.

1st year: no one will expect much recruiting, but, if he can bring in at least one or two good ones and the style of play is likable then he’ll have done good. doesn’t need to burn all of his allotted scholies in year one.

2nd year: needs to bring in three to four players. rise above the .500 mark. tickle the fancy of the fans by playing an exciting brand of ball and give more than a glimmer of hope for the future.

3rd year: continue bringing in top talent to feed the fire. contend for the wac and hopefully get in to post season play somewhere. increase attendance to at least 7,000 avg.

above all else be local. be humble.

    best wishes coach.

Of course, when things return to the low 50s next week wouldn’t be surprised if people started getting sick (again).

OK Coach Gibb, I was told that you are a hell of a recruiter. For starters, I want King Kong in the middle and Mighty Joe Young and Godzilla on the low posts.

Your supporters are happy. Now you gotta win and silence all the detractors. The eyes of the UH basketball world will be upon you and your first incoming class.

  34. Bigislandkurt March 20, 2010 5:47 am

  43. NYUH March 20, 2010 6:31 am

This could influence our game with CU
    http://bleacherreport.com/tb/b3mts

Colorado wide receiver Scotty McKnight planned to spend a restful spring break in New Jersey with his best friend, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, who is recuperating from surgery on his left knee.
McKnight still plans to head east for the week, but he will be doing so on crutches with an injured leg of his own to worry about. The senior was hurt late in the first of three spring scrimmages Thursday and did not return to action.

  46. Old School Dave March 20, 2010 6:50 am

Q for Stephen and the Tsaikos: Could this choice of Gib Arnold come down to a matter of $$$ UH can offer at this moment? I was hoping JD would have chosen either Smith from St. Marys or fmr Utah HC Giacolletti based on their coaching resumes. Some applicants are fantastic interviewers, but can coach, while others don’t come across well in interviews (Norm Chow comes to mind), but can coach. I have my doubts about this hire, but the decision has been made and we need to support Coach Arnold.

  47. Manoa March 20, 2010 6:51 am

I went back and forth with Smith and Arnold before I concluded UH should raise more money to try to hire a D1 Head Coach, even a former head coach like Giacolletti at Gonzaga.

Hiring a coach, whether you hire a out of work head coach or assistant is like going to Las Vegas, there are more losers than winners, and it’s a crap shoot as they say. Even hiring a proven sitting head coach is tough. But look around and see what coaches are getting at New Mexico and UNLV– over $1 Million a year. We have to go cheap and cross our fingers.

  48. SailorBlue March 20, 2010 6:53 am

    Happy Birthday PowerPuff…enjoy the day…

  49. Old School Dave March 20, 2010 6:53 am

Sorry, Regarding my last post, that should have been:

Some applicants are fantastic interviewers, but CAN”T coach, while others don’t come across well in interviews (Norm Chow comes to mind), but can coach.

Anyway, I hope I’m wrong about Gib Arnold and I’m willing to give him a chance. We can’t punish him for the sins of his father.

  50. wafan March 20, 2010 6:59 am

Looks like Mr. “Stud” Tsai was quite the player in high school! No doubt Wena re(s)trained him.

  51. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 7:02 am

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARA!!!

  52. Manoa March 20, 2010 7:03 am

Donovan is getting what he wanted.

He wants an uptempo coach who will run a crowd-pleasing offense (I personally like a deliberate offense that wins, but turns off many fans). Arnold is uptempo all the way. The number two candidate is a deliberate use the clock guy everywhere he has been.

Arnold is a recruiter of the highest order. He will need it to get the leapers and runners he needs for the uptempo offense– he will have to prove wrong the people who don’t think we can recruit that kind of talent.

  53. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 7:08 am

    Duffer,

    Ok. AFTER softball! 😉

Me still thinks that tennis players STILL won’t be safe!

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid March 20, 2010 7:28 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Well the sun has risen over Puowaena, and its a loverly day.

Best of luck to our new basketball coach. I have to say this just once, because he has the name for it:

“Gig, Gib, Gib it all you got!
    Gib it all you got!
Gig, Gib, Gib it all you got!
    Gib it all you got!”

  56. Da Punchbowl Kid March 20, 2010 7:32 am

    😆

    Congrats to kekoa!

Yes that chameleon-like Ajoe looks so innocent, doesn’t he? Dat buggah is a shape shifter I tell you! The last time I saw him I swear he was as gorgeous as ever and looked like he was three inches taller. What’s ur sercret, Braddah Joe?!

  57. postmanke March 20, 2010 7:34 am

love “will the son rise” still laughing @ “UH make change for a Dollar” how do you come up with these? lol

Gib really did “nail” that interview. I like the move. I like where we are heading. JD is good a recognizing talent and you can sense soon enough that there is going to be lots of talent, coaches and players in Manoa really soon. Much more than what we have today. If not Gib, it was going to be some other young, vibrant and talented coach. recognize the trend guys, there’s hints of what’s shaping the athletic dept in Manoa. – Whippersnapper’s.

A stepping stone? No doubt. But at least we get to step up with him and get us to another level from where we are at. I’m all for stepping stones, just give us the momentum we need to get it going, JD will keep it afloat.

one-or-two-and-dones in Manoa? say it aint so…

  58. Da Punchbowl Kid March 20, 2010 7:35 am

And with his cameo in the Song Contest pre-show, and now his pikshah in the blog, dat Hawaiian is becoming a regular media figure! 😆

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid March 20, 2010 7:40 am

This has already been mentioned before, but there was a new article today:

    http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/03/19/redskins-will-be-first-up-with-tebow/?icid=main|main|dl2|link5|http%3A%2F%2Fnfl.fanhouse.com%2F2010%2F03%2F19%2Fredskins-will-be-first-up-with-tebow%2F

Colt’s got his work cut out for him. All he needs is for a coach to give him an honest look.

  60. Da Punchbowl Kid March 20, 2010 7:41 am

  61. postmanke March 20, 2010 7:43 am

I dont understand why candidates will call the job opening a “dream job” isn’t that like knocking off $50k off your negotiations every time you say it?

After looking at picture of A-joe en Rob25, I don’t think I would want to sit next to Rob25, check out her left hand, looks like she’s getting ready to false crack somebody…..

  63. Allan Stalling March 20, 2010 7:59 am

Hi, this is one well written article! Thanks for posting this. I was searching for a site that has this kind of info. Glad I found this one! I’ll be dropping by here again for sure! lol

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

    Happy Birthday PP!!

Welcome to Gib Arnold. I trust that JD & crew did their due diligence and have chosen the coach who will be best for the University and the State of Hawaii.

  70. chopsueyboy March 20, 2010 8:33 am

Congratulations Coach Arnold! Welcome to the ohana. We’ll be at the games.

  71. Old School Dave March 20, 2010 8:34 am

It will be interesting to see what Gib Arnold’s recruiting approach will be in the coming weeks’ JUCOs or High School players. I’m not a basketball guy, but maybe a 4/1 recruiting ratio of JUCO and HS recruits his first year may be necessary. Hopefully, he has strong connections on the West Coast and can bring in the type of player that will fit in well at UH (remember the 7 ft Center who quit the team because of roaches in his dorm room back in the 80’s/early 90’s?).

Heard fmr UH BB player Thomas Louden on Artie Wilson’s radio show yesterday. He was going on about UH recruiting the inner cities on the continent really hard because of the abundance of talent instead of going abroad for players. He has a point about that. Problem is that many of the talented players Thomas talks about don’t have the academic record to enter UH which is a major hurdle.

  72. d1島 March 20, 2010 8:45 am

Wow! These St. Mary’s Bombers are unreal….

  73. mctruck March 20, 2010 8:51 am

    Happy BB, Ms. Powder-Puff!!!

Welcome to Gib Arnold….wishing you the best.

Let’s get going, put UH bb on the map!!

  74. Slugger March 20, 2010 8:51 am

    Go Gaels!!!

  75. mctruck March 20, 2010 8:53 am

Oooops?!…sorry too much bb on my mind….Happy BD, Ms. PP.

  76. Michael March 20, 2010 9:03 am

    Kinda like asking WWJD?

Seems, UH is asking for a miracle.

  77. Slugger March 20, 2010 9:03 am

    Morning, DPK!

  78. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc March 20, 2010 9:04 am

What is Gib’s formal first name? Is the G pronounced hard like gift or soft like giblets.

In any case, congratulations on his becoming part of La Familia. Look forward to this November and his UH coaching debut.

After the softball victory last night, I joined DrDoc at the baseball game in the top of the third. However, we left after the bottom of the 7th once the Basebows had blown away the ACA guys and went over to watch the last set of the men’s volleyball game. Tonight it’s the reverse – again softballl in the afternoon – for me anyhow – and then volleyball this evening. If things are still happening at the south end of the quarry, then we’ll go on over to The Les.

NOTE TO JIM DONOVAN: Please do not schedule three hot games at the same time in the same general location.

Again, mahalo to Protector for sitting with me and helping me follow the softball game – and tomorrow’s baseball game as well. DD has to work today and tomorrow.

With respect to private funding resources, look for an announcement very soon about a new fund/friend-raising organization.

  79. d1島 March 20, 2010 9:13 am

    The Les.

    The Stanley.

  80. BG March 20, 2010 9:15 am

    Happy Birthday PowderPuff!!!

Things haven’t been the same since you came on-board…and that’s a GOOD thing!!!

I told Kekoa that I was very impressed with the Wahine SB and VolleyWarriors ability to learn from defeat and come back stronger. To me it shows the character and focus of the teams. Also the WahineBB and WarriorFB. The Wahine got blown out in several games early on, but battled back to show great improvement later even if they didn’t get the W. Football was in that horrendous losing streak that easily could have gotten nasty with finger pointing. But, they stayed together and made a great run at the end. I like that.

  82. BG March 20, 2010 9:24 am

    Yo Kazz!!!

Kekoa, Mr and Mrs Sailor Blue and I meeting at 11am today to go check out the sites #5 and 6 on the upper level. If can, come join us. Sorry for the late notice…it was kind of a last minute decision.

OK, going shower and make it out to meet the folks.

    Friday, March 19, 2010

It was one of the biggest days of the season for Western Athletic Conference softball teams Friday as big wins, record-setting performances and major milestones ruled the day.

Hawai’i freshman Kaia Parnaby posted a shutout win over 13th-ranked Cal and San Jose State knocked off No. 11 Oklahoma in evening action. During the afternoon, Fresno State shut out Atlantic Coast Conference leader Virginia for coach Margie Wright’s 1,200th win at the school. And things got started in the morning when Katie Holverson of Nevada notched the first no-hitter of her career in a win over Colorado State.

San Jose State 5, Oklahoma 4 – Jaclyn Imhof scattered eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to earn the win as the Spartans held off the Sooners at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton. San Jose State bounced back from a loss earlier Friday, and handed Oklahoma its second loss of the day and the Sooners’ third defeat in less than 72 hours. Ursula Lopez had the key hit for the Spartans with a bases-loaded double in the second as they stormed to a 5-0 lead. OU chipped away at the lead and chased Imhof in the top of the sixth. The Sooners had the bases loaded with one out when new Spartans pitcher Amanda Pridmore struck out All-American Amber Flores and worked out of the jam. Because of errors, each team allowed just one earned run. San Jose State is the second Cal State school to defeat Oklahoma this week. Cal State Northridge defeated the Sooners 1-0 Wednesday.

Hawai’i 3, California 0 – Freshman Kaia Parnaby pitched her WAC-best sixth shutout of the season and fifth shutout at home in Honolulu as the Rainbow Wahine knocked off the Bears in the annual Spring Fling. Parnaby allowed only two hits and struck out 12 while walking three. It was her second straight shutout after pitching a complete-game, 8-0 win over Lipscomb yesterday. Freshman Kelly Majam gave Parnaby all the offense she’d need in the first inning when she led off with a home run to center. It was Majam’s WAC-leading 13th home run of the season. Hawai’i earned a bit of revenge against Bears pitcher Val Arioto, who shut out the Wahine 5-0 yesterday. Melissa Gonzalez, after hitting two home runs against Lipscomb yesterday, had two of the Wahine’s four hits Friday. UH faces Cal and Lipscomb again tomorrow.

Fresno State 1, Virginia 0 – In a pitcher’s duel at the Judi Garman Classic, Fresno State sophomore Michelle Moses turned in an excellent performance in the circle and at the plate. The right-hander from Paso Robles, Calif., picked up the second win of her career (and her second victory in less than a week) in a complete-game outing. Making her fourth start of the season, Moses was dominant in a 3-hit, 6-strikeout, no-walk afternoon against the Cavaliers, who are alone in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. Moses allowed three singles and did not allow a Virginia runner to move past first base in the game. Her ERA dropped to 0.80 with the shutout, Fresno State’s eighth of the season. She also hit a double to lead off the fourth inning and scored the game’s only run on Lisamarie Coronado’s two-out, RBI single in the frame. Virginia (14-10) entered the game having already defeated No. 4 Michigan and No. 23 La.-Lafayette earlier this year. The win was the 1,200th in Coach Margie Wright’s career at Fresno State. Wright has more than 1,300 coaching victories all-time. Tomorrow, Fresno State meets DePaul, which snapped No. 1-ranked Washington’s 18-game winning streak today.

This ain’t women’s volleyball in the WAC.

After today, Na Wahine softballers are gonna have to continue to battle it out in conference play.

Women’s softball is becoming the WAC’s most well-rounded and successful female sport with Fresno State, SJSU, Hawaii, Nevada, and even up and coming Utah State posing threats for upsets over ranked teams on any given day, this year’s WAC season and subsequent tournament should looks to have 3 to possibly even 4 teams fighting over that WAC Title.

~ To all da Tsaiko’s for their Congrats!

~ To the lucky peeps who will be joining me for tonite’s game.

~ To Koa Mahu for finally stopping the obscene phone calls throughout the nite to try to entice me into giving he/she a ticket.

~ To HPD for their support in that regard.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY POWDERPUFF !!!

  90. EH NO MAKE ! March 20, 2010 9:57 am

    Gib Arnold, really, Gib Arnold?!

Been nice knowing you Jim Donovan.

The bright side, I no longer have to spend money on men’s basketball season tickets.

  91. EH NO MAKE ! March 20, 2010 10:07 am

Do the research gang, Gib Arnold has left a trail of NCAA recruiting violations at EVERY stop he’s made in the college ranks. Pepperdine, USC, you name it.
Oh, and he got fired by the Trojans the same day Nash did.

  92. protector March 20, 2010 10:13 am

    Happy Birthday PowderPuff!

Congrats to the Wahine, Warriors & the Rainbows for the impressive wins last night. Got to see last 5 innings of the softball game, all of the Volleyball match, but only 1 and 1/3 innings at the Les. Missed the fireworks at the Les. Gotta say the men’s Volleyball team was very impressive. The second set though where it was tied at 28 and they then lost the next 2 points…that was pretty depressing. It was somewhat irritating that Tom Pestolesi was so integral to that win; that kid was pretty good, too. Always galls me when progeny of former UH players come back to hurt UH teams. Did UH try to recruit this guy? In any case all the teams did what they had to do. Kudos!

  93. vballfan1 March 20, 2010 10:16 am

Congrats to UH on landing Coach Gib. I can’t wait to hear who his assistants will be and what kind of recruits he will bring in. I think this is a great hire!

  94. Committed Road Warrior March 20, 2010 10:20 am

Surprised that Murray State is giving Butler a game so far. Sure there is a lot of time left in the second half, but who knows what’ll happen.

Lightening up the mood, 15 miles was all I could muster on the Mount Vernon trail today. 7 1/2 miles north, and then the return. That’s really showing how long it’s been since I last biked on a regular basis.

Hopefully this will get better over time.

  95. Jack Flash March 20, 2010 10:24 am

Congrats Coach Arnold… and good luck!!!

  96. 99club March 20, 2010 10:27 am

  97. jm2375 March 20, 2010 10:33 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Happy Birthday PP!! See ya tonight.

BTW, Stretch announced PP’s birthday to the crowd last night after the game. 😆

Great night last night on lower campus with victories by all 3 UH teams.

Thanks to WDoc for the vb tickets last night.

As PP can attest to, I reacted badly to the news of Arnold’s hiring. He’s gonna have to prove himself to me (and the rest of the state). I still remember when his father was coaching and they would build up a 20 pt lead only to lose by 20.

The big programs don’t generally recruit the JCs. He’s gonna need to bring in some assistants that have the knowledge.

See some of you tonight at the vb game!

  98. jm2375 March 20, 2010 10:36 am

CRW – they used to close Rock Creek Park to vehicular traffic on summer weekends. You can go from Bethesda to Mt Vernon and back without getting into too much traffic. Of course, try to not to do it when it’s 95 degrees and 95% humidity.

Welcome to the Warrior Nation, Coach Arnold.

Thank you everyone for your birthday wishes…can’t believe I’m the same age as the new bb coach. DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And just so you Tsaikos know, some very thoughtful Tsaiko brothers gave me Vitamin A and natural fiber laxative for my birthday. Hahahaha! 🙂 Love it!

  114. Pomai March 20, 2010 11:11 am

    #91 EH NO MAKE !

Ok I did what you said but didn’t find any documented proof that Arnold was involved in any NCAA recruiting violations however there where a lot of innuendo’s an rumors. Also in reading most of the written words his fireing by the Trojans was a given after a new head coach was hired, he was let go along with all of the other ass’t coaches according to the new head coach becasue he(head coach) wanted to go in another direction of the way the team played an was no reflection on the coaches that where let go.

So my question is do you know of any documented proof of his recruiting violations? I think we all would be grateful to have this knowledge so we can form our opinion of Arnold.

  115. 99club March 20, 2010 11:11 am

  116. Da Punchbowl Kid March 20, 2010 11:20 am

The Butler did it! 😆 Good one!

  117. Manoa March 20, 2010 11:33 am

If coaches hired basketball coaches, then guys like Nash and Smith would get hired everytime– they are nice guys who know an awful lot about basketball and the x’s and o’s, cut from the same cloth really– Smith is like more Nash, than Nash in that regard.

But Athletic Directors do the hiring and they sometimes take a bold, somewhat risky choice, like Arnold. Donovan is hoping for the flashier recruits, and the uptempo offense that a guy like Arnold is promising (and has delivered everywhere else he has been). Everything is premised on the right players. He can’t get the players, his style of basketball will fall flat.

  118. kama krab March 20, 2010 11:39 am

Man Kyle Smith is looking better and better each time St. Mary’s win. Hopefully Gib can back his interveiw with wins. Kind of shocked but oh well. Not the coach I wanted to hear about today.

  119. kama krab March 20, 2010 11:45 am

Hopefully Gib can erase some of the bad feelings that alot of people had for his father. If not then the Arnold name will be banished from Hawaii folklore forever. I’m really hoping JD took a real good look at all the candidates and that Gib was the best for the job.

To me this is a very risky hire for JD. I really hope this works out because this hire maybe JD’s legacy.

  120. A-House March 20, 2010 11:47 am

Congrats to the MVB, Wahine SB, and BB Bows for their spirited efforts in wins last night. Keep the streak going!!!

And, congrats to PP on her 16th birfday x 2 = aw, kinda old, eh!

  121. Stephen Tsai March 20, 2010 11:49 am

All I know is UH fans would be really happy if an O.J. Mayo-like player were to come to Manoa.

  122. A-House March 20, 2010 11:51 am

Will “flashy” players and “up tempo” play raise $$$$? Will the new coach be able to make the program profitable again?

For fun only, any one would take a “wager” that he will not be around in 5 years?

  123. Stretch March 20, 2010 11:51 am

Everyone needs to support JD and Gib Arnold. Gib hasn’t coached one game or made one decision and some of you are against him. If he doesn’t have eveyrone’s backing, how is he supposed to improve the program to what everyone wants it to be?? We need to give him our support. If he proves in time to be the wrong choice, JD will have to answer some questions but until then, no second guessing the choice for me.

  124. Stephen Tsai March 20, 2010 11:52 am

I used to cover high school basketball a hundred years ago, and I picked Gib Arnold to our All-State team.
Got a lot of grief for that, mostly because of what his father was to have alleged to have said about local coaching.
He was a polarizing pick, but I thought it was the right one, at the time.

  125. Stephen Tsai March 20, 2010 11:53 am

Bottom line is: if team wins, it’s a great choice. If not, it’s not.

  126. wowlaulau March 20, 2010 12:04 pm

#91, I guess the same should be said about Rick Patino since he was also part of the Hawaii coaching staff when Hawaii violated NCAA rules….

I believe Smith would have been a better pick for Hawaii but its now wait a see time…

  127. RedZone March 20, 2010 12:05 pm

Havin Mayo like player would be like the death penalty.

I would rather have a Jarvis Varnado.

  128. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 12:08 pm

UH 2-0 over Lipscomb bottom of 3rd.

Yoshikawa hits a two run homer with Aguirre on base.

Aguirre with a heroic diving catch on a line drive to right field to get an out.

    Ricketts pitching.

  129. 99club March 20, 2010 12:12 pm

Aaarrrgh! I’m in TX so they have to show the Baylor game. Meanwhile, Norther Iowa is up on KS by 7 in the 1st half.

Yup, we gotta support the decision. One has to wonder how much salary negotiations came into play. One guy is employed and in the sweet 16 and the other guy is not. I’m guessing that JD didn’t have to offer as much to the latter. Just the economic realities that most mid-major conferences have to deal with right now.

  130. mctruck March 20, 2010 12:16 pm

O.K,.. so who’s Arnold got coming to UH??…oh, sorry…..too sooon ehhh?

Can he hire his father as an assistant?, not that I’m wishing for it to happen.

I hope he cleans house and brings in a new crew to help him.

  131. expat March 20, 2010 12:16 pm

Any incoming coach was going to have to prove themselves. What Gib should not have to prove is that he is not his father. It isn’t fair to hang that on him. He is his own guy. Hopefully he has great success in Manoa.

  132. RainbowCliff March 20, 2010 12:19 pm

Well Tsaiko Nation the decesion has been made and you have Gib Arnold the new Rainbow Warrior Coach. Punahou and Hawaii ties a big factor as his reputation as a quality recruiter will be put to the task as I gather a three year contract to start off and extensions to follow after showing positive climbs especially in the win column.

His Father Frank had those great teams of byu we played including Danny Ainge, Fred Roberts, Devin Durrant, Alan Taylor, Steve Craig and BIG Craig Kite. To bad Dad did’t do well at all at UH as hopefully son will do different. Up side he is young and WANTS a head coaching position as his assistants will be a very important piece to his leadership.

I don’t know where he is on his x’s and o’s as the same with his coaching philosphy but the “BOTTOM” line is to recruit and bring some athletic h.s. players and build the program. The JC route has been played out to long in Hawaii as two years and out does not bring you stability only a “quick fix”.

Preperation starts in the practice gym and building your team camraderie as roles need to be define early with a grueling strength and conditioning program.

Good luck to Coach Gib and his Rainbow Warriors !

  133. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 12:19 pm

UH 2-0 btm of 4th over Lipscomb.

Yoshikawa out at 2nd base and Pagaduan in. Yoshikawa struggling with her positioning.

  134. 99club March 20, 2010 12:36 pm

    RainbowCliff-

I almost mentioned bringing in “one and dones” on an earlier post. Nice to read your perspective on the JC transfers and quick fixes. It’s unfortunate that contracts these days are up before a newly-hired coach’s first recruits finish their third year of college.

  135. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 12:40 pm

UH 3-2 with one out recorded and Bison runners at 3 and 2 the bottom of 5th and Parnaby warming up. Ricketts still in for now.

  136. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 12:43 pm

Nevermind. Tied 3-3. Ricketts out and Jenna Rodriguez to the mound.

Still only one out and runners on 3rd and 1st. Bottom of 5th.

  137. 99club March 20, 2010 12:46 pm

OK, CBS is off my list. 1-pt game now with ODU v. Baylor.

  138. Pauoa Boy March 20, 2010 12:46 pm

I not going judge the Coach until I see what results are being produced. Welcome to Warrior Nation Coach Gib. Just gotta get cracking now and start going to work. We’ll see what happens who stays and who goes. Either way I give Coach full support to get the basketball program back on the map. Fresh start, just need to do it right…

  139. Committed Road Warrior March 20, 2010 12:50 pm

    99club,

They’re showing the Northern Iowa/Kansas game out here (which is fine with me). I would’ve thought they’d show the Baylor/ODU match, but I suppose Washingtonians don’t really care what goes on with teams from down in Norfolk…..

  140. 99club March 20, 2010 12:51 pm

    Rainbow Warriors…just a pet peeve.

  141. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 12:53 pm

    Damn silliness already…

Lipscomb up 4-3. Correction: now bottom of the 5th.

Rodriguez out and now Parnaby pitching. Up to bat for Grimes is Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu at the bottom of the order.

  142. RedZone March 20, 2010 12:55 pm

listening to Gib right now I like his ideas on recruiting.

  143. RedZone March 20, 2010 1:03 pm

I wonder what Gib is going to do about the current players on the team who do not exhibit the skills he is looking for?

  144. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 1:12 pm

Bottom of 6th now. Still Lipscomb up 4-3.

Katie Grimes taking the senior leadership role in the huddle.

    Enough is ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!

Gonzalez with a high pop fly that turns into a double as Lipscomb couldn’t field it.

Wild pitch and Migi moves to 3rd. Taualii up and pop flies out. 1 out. J-Rod up to bat with Gonzalez at 3rd and hits a pop fly turned error to get to 1st and Gonzalez remains at 3rd. Aguirre up with 1 out and runners on 3rd and 1st. Aguirre gets hit and moves to 1st. Bases loaded with Yoshikawa up to bat…..

  145. 99club March 20, 2010 1:15 pm

Remember when the pundits were saying that the Kansas got the raw deal with the “group of death” (MD, OH St., Georgetown, etc.). They never mentioned Northern Iowa.

  146. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 1:17 pm

A damn waste. All runners stranded.

  147. Committed Road Warrior March 20, 2010 1:17 pm

Barring a total comeback, it appears that New Mexico is going down in flames to UW.

The ODU/Baylor game has been going back and forth the entire second half.

  154. vballfan1 March 20, 2010 1:29 pm

I really like Coach Gib and I think he will do well here!

Wow at Northern Iowa. Faroukanesh (spelling) is the son of former Wazzu volleyball coach Cindy Frederick.

I think the mountain west is totally overated , I found it hard to believe they were rated higher than the PAC 10 and Washington is showing why it should not have been. Utah State beat BYU earlier as well.

Bottom of 7th with Lipscomb walkint Gonzalez, Taualii makes them pay and on a single brings Migi home for the walk off single to win.

    Pau UH 5-4.

Nice comeback but completely unnecessary. We had no business being behind to Lipscomb with a 3 run lead… I’m sorry…

Next up Wahine take on #13 CAL.

If we had that OJ Mayo controversy at UH we’d be hit so hard by the NCAA that the sailing team would feel it.

  168. RupertDaStupert March 20, 2010 1:44 pm

Wow is that pic of PowderPuff? She’s so pretty made me forget about today’s hire. JD is smart. I hope Gib does great! If he does he will go highter up the hill stateside. More power to him! I loved he had the moxy to text in this blog couple days ago. I love the UH sports program and I support any HC who cares too. Hana HOU Gib!

  169. Pearl City March 20, 2010 2:03 pm

The fix was in from the beginning.JD should never have given Nash an extension, which cost the school $240,000. He needed to recoup that money, so whoever gave the cash gets to pick the new coach.
    Two things: Arnold vs. Smith.
    1. Arnold – fired by USC; Smith – St. Mary’s in Sweet 16. Who’s the hot property?
    2. Arnold – on Tim Floyd’s staff which VIOLATED NCAA recruiting process and will no doubt lead to USC penalties. Smith – squeaky clean.
No AD in their right mind would of picked Arnold unless the fix was in. The next opening may be for AD. Takahara-Dias was 10-20 last year. Trap ain’t looking too good.
Ask anyone who worked at UH when Frank Arnold was there. The guy was a jerk, to put it nicely. Jim Leahey said he hated the guy. And now we got the son.

Pearl City, while my guy was not picked, this was one of the most rational, un-political, decisions made in this town ever. And I commend Donovan for it. It is a personal decision Donovan made based on his vision of the program.

He wants a recruiter first and foremost and that is Arnold by a long shot. The NCAA tournament shows the success that St. Mary’s had with 3-4 Australian players starting and the Head coach credited another assistant, not Smith, with recruiting 5 top players from Australia.

He also wants an “exciting offense” after Riley and Nash’s ball control offenses (which I a basketball purist like), and St. Mary’s is another ball control team. Arnold willl bring in an uptempo NBA style which Donovan wants to attract fans– more like the Fabulous 5.

So Donovan got exactly what he wants in Arnold.

    #174 Manoa

I was not too thrilled with the Arnold selection, but since I love UH sports, I will support Gib as long as its exciting and maybe winning. Doesn’t all the new basketball coaches say that they will have a fast tempo, exciting offense with a high pressure, man-to-man defensive, winning type of team? I know Bob, Wallace, Frank and others said that. That’s called selling yourself. If all coaches could do what they promise, then nobody will lose any games. We’ll just have to wait and see and hope for the best.

  178. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 2:47 pm

Well, after taking a deep breath (and a couple of brews), I think people should give Coach Arnold a chance and let him do what he does. He does have head coaching experience (albeit at the JUCO level), but Smith doesn’t. I look forward to seeing what kind of recruiter Gib Arnold is and if he’s as good as people say he is.

I will say that Gib Arnold seems genuinely happy and enthusiastic about he UH job and he WANTS to be here and a part of the community. Can’t say the same for some of the other terrible hires in UH Athletics history (Fred von Appen and many of his assistants, Frank Arnold, Jim Bolla, etc.).

His assistants will also be a major piece of the puzzle. Should be interesting.

  187. NorthShoreFan March 20, 2010 3:17 pm

Kazz..the WAC looks like a tough race this year for softball. Lots of teams getting some quality wins but me thinks Na Wahine get one leg up on this. Listened to the press conference and Gib sounds good. Likes the up tempo, pro style offense and man defense. Has yet to meet with the returning players. Only knows of Thompson. Interesting that he will not give out scholarships to antone just to fill spots on the roster. Good approach. Build for the future with bonifide scholarship recruits.
So how long will it take him to pull the string on the walk ons in the program? I haven’t seen the redshirts so not sure if they fit into his game plan. If they don’t we in deep kim chee.
Lay and Williams will get what they were brought here for. Up tempo, in your face basketball. More to their liking. The up tempo may give us a look at what they are capable of in stead of the methodical set offense.
Got to watch the recruits list from now.
Gob knows how to build excitement and probably tap the donation pipeline too.

    Bess signed with Miami today.

The Dolphins confirmed reports Saturday that exclusive-rights free agents Davone Bess, Joey Haynos and Dan Carpenter have all been signed to one-year contracts.

All three players were not selected in the 2008 Draft and as such had almost no bargaining power after concluding their second NFL seasons. The deals will allow them to participate in the Dolphins’ offseason conditioning programs starting Monday at the training facility in Davie.

Bess had a team-high 76 receptions for 758 yards and two touchdowns last season, establishing himself as a top-flight slot receiver. He also was the team’s primary punt returner, though his average of 7.5 yards per return dropped significantly from his rookie year, when his 11-yard average ranked among the league leaders.

No contract terms were announced. All three made the veteran minimum of $391,240 last year.

Coach Gib for one cannot have punahou buddie buddies to be his assitance as mainland and international recruiting is essential for him getting his era off to a good start.

Coach Gib will need to form a team of coaches that have “QUALITY” in many areas of the basketball game and bring “ALOHA” to young basketball athletes mind that Hawaii is a GREAT arena for division 1 basketball and being a Rainbow Warrior and playing in front of adoring Hawaiian fans is the ultimate life and beginings of a memorable career.

Coach Gib basketball philosophy sounds good as up / tempo offense, pressure man to man defense has been missing BUT he has to get the horses that can run, jump and shoot with intelligence to the game of not forcing the action to cause silly turnovers.

Bench coach of using your players in game situations and making “ADJUSTMENTS” is critical in the college game today as the college basketball athlete today are superior in their skill level with so many teams using the high-pick-n-roll and spreading the court to penetrate or dish. Coach did talk of the match-up zone which a lot of teams run today as it’s man to man defensive principals can be extended three quarters up BUT you must have quick and aggressive guards who can move laterally, anticipate and play with their feet and ahnds in the passing lanes.

All in All Tsaiko Nation, Mr. Donovan has made the decesion as Gib is his man and very polished in his demeanor and comes off very well on his excitement of becoming the Hawaii Coach and the job that has to be done to bring back this once respected program.

Coach diplomatically stated that he look forward to getting advise from Wallace or Nash because of their stature and experience as time will tell when he starts putting his seal of approval on what his coaching tenure will be ?

All the support to him !

  212. Ralph March 20, 2010 5:59 pm

D1 yup: have you seen any of UH’s games, if so, and upon further review of the returning players, are you keeping any of them, and if you are, why? His plans for uptempo game plan won’t work with the returning players who played. why, poor ball handlers and most of them are guards. Kurtz is too slow for uptempo. Amis can find a role. Don’t know much of Milovic and Zane? except Milovic played 5 minutes per game for 8 games, that is equal to one complete game out of possible 30 game season- not a whole lot of experience or tape to evaluate.

  213. Ralph March 20, 2010 6:03 pm

Since he is now officially the coach, like Stretch stated, backing him and hoping for the best. Same with coach Dana, wanted someone with D1 experience, she got the job, now backing her and hoping for the best. I hope he cleans house, assistant coaches and most of the players, start a clean slate, get rid of the losing culture of the last 3 seasons-strictly business, nothing personal, just like the godfather would do it.

  214. Ralph March 20, 2010 6:08 pm

  215. anonymous March 20, 2010 6:15 pm

3/9/10-UH begins search for new basketball coach
    3/20/10-UH names new basketball coach

In 11 days. Donovan names search committee, enlists feedback from former coaches and players; signs with a basketball consulting firm to assists in national search and does interviews here and on the mainland; reviews 40 plus candidates, narrows it down to eight plus interviews, and makes final decision last night and makes the announcement this afternoon.

Outstanding work. Points to Donovan. Points for recognizing the urgency of selecting a coach quickly. I see the logic behind this decision in hiring Coach Arnold. For one the hiring is within UH budget. Lot of upside. Lot of potential. Five years as an assistant at USC is saying a lot.

No need for me to ask a rhetorical question, like (ST’s) is the son rising?

For I think he will. I can’t wait. Back flips as I’m typing. This is going to be fun. The new coach is reputed to be a good recruiter. A great basketball mind, runs a uptempo offense and is a galvanizing figure. What more can you ask for?

In contrast the last hiring of a UH basketball coach:

3/8/07-UH’s basketball last game of the season
    4/14/07-UH names new basketball coach

No need to beat a dead horse, here. But note how quickly and efficiently Donovan got things done.

On UH’s web site a quote from the Chancellor:

Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw said, “I appreciate everyone moving forward quickly so that our new basketball coach will have every opportunity to succeed and build an exciting future for UH Manoa and Hawai‘i.”

Actually I read her quote twice. Well said. She’s on top things. Especially if she’s familiar with how the last athletic director waited for an eternity before selecting a new basketball coach. I agree that the new basketball coach will have every opportunity to succeed. And, I ,along with many others wish that Coach Arnold and the UH basketball program have many fortuitous bounces.

  217. el guapo March 20, 2010 6:45 pm

    Ralph,

There are 11 returning players, 5 will be seniors, and 3 are walk-ons. If Coach Arnold can only sign between 5-7 new players, and you are proposing he get rid of most of the returnees, that doesn’t leave much bodies for him to work with as he still needs subs and scouts. Seems best that he try to keep all the returnees and try to replace 5 players each year rather than 10 in one year which he can’t do. Some of those 11 will leave on their own anyway. Don’t want to get into a situation like Coach Dana had at the end of the season.
And he just might be able to get more out of those returning players than we have seen from them in the past.

  218. Garret March 20, 2010 6:56 pm

    Ralph,

If you get rid of too many players, or some players transfer on their own, the APR would *kill* UH. In some cases, taking away a scholarship from a player might result in the loss of a scholarship due to APR…so, you don’t have the player you got rid of AND you cannot give his scholarship to any other player.

  238. Ralph March 20, 2010 9:34 pm

Thanks Garret and El quapo 11 returnees, most of whom sat on the bench for a 10-20 team, not a lot of prospects. Only tthompson, Williams and Lay with quality PT minutes, that leaves 6 who couldn’t get much PT, plus Amis, Johnson and Milovic. If the APR is one for one, then Arnold is stuck with what is in the house, he needs HS players to develop and it would be hard to expect 5 HS earning starting roles.

  239. Ralph March 20, 2010 9:43 pm

Thompson, Williams, Lay, and Johnson are quards, Amis, Ji and Milovic are forwards, and Kurtz at center. Plus 3 walk ons. With Thompson, Williams, Lay, Amis and Kurtz seniors to be, then over a 2 recruiting cycle Arnold will have given 10 scholarships to build his team for his 2nd year. I quess its doable, but not easy to win with young squad. I hope he doesn’t go too much with JUCO, then he has to build again in 2 years and tougher if the JUCO sits on the bench the first year like Kurtz, Lay and Williams did this season.

  240. Ralph March 20, 2010 9:48 pm

feather in the cap of Tsai for having Arnold on the warrior beat a day after his annoucement and a credit to coach Arnold for accepting. But now I got to think of another question since El quapo and Garret mentioned APR. Well, maybe clean house in the coaching ranks, change the culture and mindset so that the returning players don’t see the same O’ next season on the bench with them.

  245. Bigislandkurt March 20, 2010 11:10 pm

Some people are noticeably weary of Gib’s hire. He speaks well, energetically and with great confidence. Some people are cautiously placing their support behind the new coach while others are excited and optimistic. A few people hate the hire. He is pretty verbose and energetic. I think that is good. He is hired to win. He doesn’t have to pass the “right fit” test to me. He just gotta win and make money for the program. He is not a local boy, although he spent two Punahou years here. He’s a continental guy who spent two years in Hawaii. It’s hard for me to look at this hire as a local guy “coming home.” But you know what? I’m cool with that. Gib just gotta win. IF he does, everything else will work itself out. And rest assured, if he wins, He’s on to the next great job. Again, I’m cool with that.

He got my support for sure. Can’t wait to see who the first class of recruits are.

Wow, what a long day. Meet Josh Leonard today. He is in camp with the Spokane Shock arena team. All I know is that my NCAA bracket is busted worse than Tiger was after getting whacked by his wife!

When his dad Frank was hired, I was pushing hard for Merv Lopes. See what happens when the committee went with a more polished guy?

I currently use a Lexmark, I am OK using the excellent but I am really unhappy with how quick it goes by way of ink. I will need one thing which could print excellent documents and not drain me dry while using price of ink.

  260. Holden Service Manuals April 8, 2010 10:52 am

Owner manuals have always been freely available from bookshops and dealerships, as well as on the Internet, but the major problem has been that they tend to be pretty expensive. A new site that permits you to download them free of charge, however, means that you really don’t need to worry about the cost (which can often be as much as it costs to get a fault repaired, depending on the car you have).
