Why not Chow?

Of course, Rockne Freitas would continue to do a good job if he remained as UH’s athletic director.

And Keith Amemiya  would be a good choice, too. He’s sharp, has ties everywhere, knows how to make money and, more importantly, knows the right way to spend money.

But if either decides not to pursue the job, there’s somebody UH should pursue: head coach Norm Chow.

Chow is smart (he has a doctorate), with connections locally and nationally in sports and business, and has proven he can work with others in matters involving athletics, academics and budgets. Most of all, he is an out-of-the-box thinker in a department that needs fresh ideas. Even better, he could work both jobs at the same salary he is currently earning, thus saving UH the amount it would pay another person to become AD.

Not sure if Chow would be interested in the job. But if UH is looking for candidates, it could save a lot of time and money by beginning the search on campus.

    Holy smokes, Kifi! You right!

The PAC 12 would begging us to join if KK was AD.

Somebody get one hot cup of kope for KK this morning as he ponders the possibility…

  8. kifi August 16, 2012 6:48 am

#5 – I would put A-Joe in charge of marketing and public relations. Bulla in charge of operations. Stretch in charge of finance.

  9. Whats up August 16, 2012 6:48 am

I doubt anybody would take on the responsiblilty of AD and do it for free or in Chows case the same pay as he is getting now. But I could see Chow taking the additional responsibility of AD for a little bit more pay than he makes now.

Hawaii-San Diego St in San Diego on Oct. 6: @$22 each for SIDELINE SEATS behind our Warriors bench in the Plaza level; one level above the field (UH ticket office price is $26 each). I wonder how long it was on Jack’s mind to give up football. He must’ve been battling this idea for awhile.

I wish him the best in all of his future endeavors.

    A-Joe:

Damuni was one of the “bullpen” guys who was called up last week.

I didn’t get to speak to him yesterday.

He was being dropped off while I was being picked up at the Hickam entrance yesterday afternoon.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid August 16, 2012 6:56 am

Kifi prolly knows the answer to this question – are there any current college BCS football coaches who double as ADs ?

  16. Stretch August 16, 2012 6:58 am

If given the opportunity, Junes Jones would be motivated enough to take on the dual roles of head coach/AD. He had the drive, the vision and connections to make a difference.

Chow prefers to keep it simple and pursue his life long passion: coach football. He’s living his dream and is set on doing it well.

  18. kifi August 16, 2012 7:00 am

DPK. You can try this website called google.com. They might have the answer to your question.

  19. manoa#1 August 16, 2012 7:00 am

    st,

talk to damuni yesterday he had to go and take care his registration for school and he will be back on the first day.coaches told him to take care of that.

  20. WarriorMojo August 16, 2012 7:01 am

I might be off base, but I want Warrior football.

  21. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:06 am

National searches are fine and dandy, but the only mainland applicants are those who are unemployed, ADs from lesser programs or associate ADs “willing to learn.” Geesh.

Then UH would have to spend a lot of time getting someone acclimated.

Take Apple, for example. I’m sure Apple is a nice guy and qualified and blah, blah, blah. I’m also sure someone had to tell him to take off his shoes before going into a house, eat the food gratefully that auntie makes, don’t button the top button of the aloha shirt, don’t call slippahs “flip-flops,” don’t call sashimi “bait” …

  22. kifi August 16, 2012 7:08 am

    Don’t call soda………..pop.

  23. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:10 am

Don’t call Hawaii residents who aren’t of Hawaiian ancestry “Hawaiians.”

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid August 16, 2012 7:11 am

I tried that site – it said to ask Kifi.

  25. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:13 am

    Don’t sit during Hawaii Pono‘i.

  26. Shoko August 16, 2012 7:13 am

How about Steve Orsini? Think he’s still unemployed. Not sure he would be interested tho.

  27. Shoko August 16, 2012 7:17 am

Nevermind Orsini, probably couldn’t afford him.

  28. HawaiiMongoose August 16, 2012 7:18 am

I think Coach Chow is doing a great job. I’d much rather see him continue building up UH football than take on Manoa politics.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid August 16, 2012 7:19 am

    Gratz to Wil-r-u.

  30. BigWave96744 August 16, 2012 7:20 am

Stephen, with Pasoquen out and Damuni retiring, any chance we see some

Would be nice to see Jordan Gomes or Monico finishing up their senior year.

Btw, is kicker Ceejay Santos here?

Oh Chris Ault was both AD & HC 🙂

  31. mo808 August 16, 2012 7:20 am

Good Morning All! 16 more wakeups!

My thoughts exactly, Chow would be a great AD! Of course, he may not want to apply. But, it would make a lot of sense to have him in the position.

    Let’s Go Warriors!

  32. Da Punchbowl Kid August 16, 2012 7:20 am

Keep the AD local, I’m thinkin’.

  33. Wes'side Warrior August 16, 2012 7:20 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Coach Chow is definitely a visionary leader. Wonder if he’s ever thought of the AD position, anywhere?

Aye! Try look DPK’s response to Kifi in #24 above! Hahaha! Quite ha-lee-ree-ous!

And don’t ask for potatoes or mashed potatoes to go with your hamburga steak!

  34. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:21 am

I’m sure there’s a former Penn State AD looking for a job.

  35. Wes'side Warrior August 16, 2012 7:22 am

Oh, and gratz to Will-I-Am on winning da ticket from Stretch’s friend’s friend!

  36. Warrior4Life August 16, 2012 7:24 am

    #28

I agree. I think Coach Chow should stick with football.

  37. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:25 am

I always thought a good AD is someone who plays fantasy football or baseball.

I played fantasy baseball for about 20 years, and I knew the prospects in every team’s farm system. Then I stopped playing, and two years later, there were closers whose names I couldn’t recognize.

An AD has to be a sports fan, because he/she needs to make the right call on which coaches to hire.

  38. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:27 am

CeeJay Santos is not in camp. It’s probably because he has to redshirt this season.

Of course, Graham has to redshirt, too. But he’s in camp to give the scout offense a boost.

  39. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:28 am

Duke Bukoski has a chance to play this year if he can prove there were special circumstances to return to Hawaii. He might have a case.

  40. BigWave96744 August 16, 2012 7:30 am

  42. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:35 am

Orsini would have a difficult time here. SMU has a billionaires club of boosters.

    UH had a telethon.

  43. BigWave96744 August 16, 2012 7:36 am

    True

  44. tommui August 16, 2012 7:41 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I know of a terrific person for AD who has been praised for doing a great job at his institution and probably has greater worlds to conquer.

The problem is that JD probably would not want all those Monday-morning quarterbacks looking over his shoulder and not have the full support of the Administration.

  45. Shoko August 16, 2012 7:44 am

True, but I think Orsini’s prowess to reach out to donors is a much needed talent for an AD.

  46. Da Punchbowl Kid August 16, 2012 7:44 am

This should really help our national search. Lots o’ help, Ferd!

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/columnistspremium/20120816_who_in_their_right_mind_would_want_to_be_uh_ad.html

  47. manoa#1 August 16, 2012 7:47 am

    # 30 bigwave damuni got excuse to go take care his registration for school.

  48. Shoko August 16, 2012 7:48 am

Bleymier would have been another good AD, but unfortunately he’s now with SJSU.

P.S. Still hate BSU tho. Maybe not as much since they’re leaving.

  49. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 7:48 am

    UH has had timing problems.

    Frazier didn’t hire Jones.

    Donovan didn’t hire McMackin

    Greenwood didn’t hire Hinshaw

    Apple didn’t hire Donovan

I’m sure there will be a time when the president hired the chancellor who hired the athletic director who hired the head coaches.

Which is why I think Chow would be a good choice for AD.

  50. Last Call August 16, 2012 7:49 am

This may bring a lot of boos but why not a women for an AD ?

  51. Shoko August 16, 2012 7:53 am

I thought of that yesterday, LC. Why not. There are a handful of female AD’s out there. Such as Cary Groth, but no one likes her and thinks she is more of Ault’s puppet.

  52. lava August 16, 2012 7:57 am

Move Chow to AD and bring back June to win football games. I keep hearing from everyone how many games we are going to win this year. I don’t see it, and I’m guessing that a lot of people could be very disappointed at the end of the season.

  53. kawika49 August 16, 2012 8:03 am

Stretches, friend, freind is stretch; from his pocket….Mahalo stretch.

  54. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 8:04 am

  57. Last Call August 16, 2012 8:25 am

Why Avis, why not Budget or Alamo or Enterprise ?

  58. al August 16, 2012 8:31 am

chow with collateral duties as the universities’ ad is an intriguing consideration.

let chow hire his son carter as his assistant to run the interference, pave the processess, and tie up the legalities and this could work.

after all the “apple don’t fall too far from the tree.” (i was reminded of this quote by one big, ex-olineman from the warrior past.)

they it could be chow-chow time.

  59. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 8:33 am

    Al:

I think the idea for hiring a HC to do double duty would be to save money, so, no, no more hires.

  60. Last Call August 16, 2012 8:35 am

Chow hasn’t even proven himself a good head coach yet and you want him as an AD ?

  61. tommui August 16, 2012 8:36 am

Ferd – good read this AM – Bloggers, if you haven’t read it yet, do so now.

  62. NEO August 16, 2012 8:37 am

I believe that Coach Chow would respectfully decline the AD position, for most of the reasons already stated. He needs/wants to focus on Football, and for him to split time between AD and Head Coach of the state’s ONLY D-1 football program is a lot to ask… which is not to say he couldn’t do it, and do it well, I just think that he wants to pour his heart and soul into making the football program successful, both on and off the field.

Did anyone catch last night’s Hawaii Stars: UH Athletics Heart of a State? I thought Kanoa’s interview w/ Coach Chow was good, and you can tell by listening to Coach that he loves Hawaii, there’s stil a little bit of apprehension in his voice, but I suppose that’s natural as this is his first collegiate HEAD COACHING job… no worries coach, the Tsai-kos gonna support you, no matter what! ONE SNAP, AND CLEAR!!

    NEO

  63. Shoko August 16, 2012 8:41 am

    #54,

Nope, just saying that Groth fits for Nevada, but wouldn’t fit well with UH. Besides, most of the negative reviews of her comes from a fans perspective. Obviously she has gained support from people that run the university and its boosters. The one’s that make the decisions.

  64. al August 16, 2012 8:47 am

st…i hear you, but the task of head coach is much as it is. the ad’s job will take a lot of fine tooth combing and then a lot of effort by his team to produce fresh ideas.

oh wait, the new ad gets to hire a completely new staff won’t he?

  65. al August 16, 2012 8:48 am

but, yeah we need someone with the hawaii connection.

  66. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 8:50 am

The new AD can do whatever he wishes.

  67. Peter August 16, 2012 8:52 am

Anthony Carter available? Raph Cherry been paroled yet? Duane Kurisu?

  68. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 8:55 am

Again, the AD’s job is to earn more than you spend and hire coaches who win more than they lose.

Most of the revenue will have to come from Hawaii, which means making nice-nice to lawmakers and business leaders.

I’m sure there are more than a few up-and-coming people out there, but Hawaii’s a different animal.

I remember when a former AD was hired, he spoke confidently that, if put in a room with business people, would do a good job of getting donations. Thing is, an AD’s job is to find the people to bring into the room.

  69. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 8:56 am

I think Linda Lingle would be a good AD, too.

I wonder if Mufi will apply?

  70. Hodad August 16, 2012 8:57 am

Ferd hit the nail on the head with his ciolumn today. It’s like the Three Stoges or the Marx Brothers are running the university. BTW, The Marx Brothers movie Horse Feathers is the best football movie ever made. Take that Rudy.

  71. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 8:57 am

Lingle apparently knows how to raise money. Evidence 1: The top left corner of this blog.

  72. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 8:58 am

    Hodad:

I’m still going with “The Waterboy.”

  73. Musashi August 16, 2012 9:00 am

It would be nice if they can find an AD that like Stan Sheriff. Of course there can only be ONE Stan Sheriff. He was one of the best UH ADs.

  74. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2012 9:01 am

Stan Sheriff was a great AD.

  75. Na Koa Mike August 16, 2012 9:06 am

Don’t forget that Murphy’s Pigskin Pigout is one week from today. It’s the last big fundraiser of the year in support of our Warrior’s football program.

    http://www.nakoa.org/2012/07/murphys-pigskin-pigout-set-for-aug-23rd/

  76. madeinhawaii August 16, 2012 9:08 am

Maybe one of Chow’s off springs can do a good job at AD? At least you know the football program would be well tended to.

  77. Derek August 16, 2012 9:10 am

Keith Amemiya could be a good choice. He too would probably say this is his dream job. A guy like Dom Capers might be considered. He’s coached here under Larry Price and has been very successful football coach. Won a Super Bowl with the GB Packers. Don’t know his adminstrative side but if he’s through coaching football he might be interested. I think he’s in his late 50s or early 60s.

His wife is a local gal. I think Blangiardi is too old now to be AD.

I get the feeling that Chow’s first recruiting class is proving to be very good. By all reports that I have read players like Lakalaka, Fonua, Sai, Phillips, Jackson, Koloamatangi, Moleni, Milovale, etc. etc. are all doing very well and could see playing time early and often. If so, the coaches are doing a great job of recruiting and evaluating talent. That my friends means the program is going in the right direction. We already have the top offensive lineman in the state committed, John Waa. We also have the #2 rated QB in the state committed in Keelan Ewaliko and I’m not sure he’s not #1. And Chow has a good chance to get the #1 rated defensive lineman in the state in Kennedy Tulimasealii from Waianae. That would be a great haul right there. Scott Pagaso committed to Clemson and is rated a 4 star player by Scout.com, but he’s not even #1 at his position in Hawaii. How you figga? Comments.

  78. 808Bowler August 16, 2012 9:13 am

    Morning Hawaii Nei

Funny how Mr. Apple was scheduled to come on the sports animals but rescheduled. Now they don’t know when he will be able to come on.

I think Amemiya would be good at AD.

  79. papajoe2 August 16, 2012 9:13 am

I once took a team of 12 year old boys to the Arizona Memorial. Some of them couldn’t sit still during the lecture, but when we did get to the Memorial, they became solem. I hope now that they are adults and most have families of their own, they realize the sacrafice that the men entombed payed for their freedom. Now that they are older, one day, I hope that they really realize it and take their family back there.

  80. al August 16, 2012 9:17 am

    mih…see #58

  81. INNOCENT OBSERVER August 16, 2012 9:25 am

not sure if chow would want to be AD since during football season, he works awfully long and hard, it just might be too much for him. however, agree that he could do a good job if he relinquishes his head coach duties. if anyone else, amemiya could be the best person.

  82. al August 16, 2012 9:31 am

rick blangiardi is a youthful 65 years old who won’t plan on retiring anytime soon.

he definitely has the passion, contacts, experience, and businss acumen.

  83. al August 16, 2012 9:33 am

not sure if amemiya has the necessary mainland contacts at this time. he has everything else.

  84. al August 16, 2012 9:36 am

rockne freitas would be a strong candidate if he “wants” it. he’s already proven what he can do with it.

and btw, he is one year older than rick.

  85. al August 16, 2012 9:39 am

at age 65 there are two types of people in this world.

the first, who couldn’t wait to reach that age so they could retire from the work force.

the second type, are those who feel that they can and wan’t to work another ten years.

okay, okay, so there’s a third category, there’s those who must work.

  86. kev-1 August 16, 2012 9:39 am

I’ll do it! I am terrible at saving money, even worse at spending it. I have no friends, meaning no connections, and I have questionable communication and relationship building skills.

  87. kev-1 August 16, 2012 9:41 am

al . . . your second category needs to be broken up into two sub-categories:

those who feel they can and want to work for another ten years and are actually capable of doing so

    and

those who feel they can and want to work for another ten years but really have no business being there, irritate their co-workers because they are so forgetful, and are out on leave so much because they’re too old

  88. kev-1 August 16, 2012 9:45 am

Good move Tulsi! Thinking of the taxpayers and saving us money already. How about her for AD?

  89. wafan August 16, 2012 9:54 am

Not sure how much associate commissioners from the PAC12 conference office make, but if we can afford it I think we should at least look at some of them as possible candidates.

They not only know the PAC12 but probably know a lot about and work with the Big West and WCC. Conferences we are either a part of or want to play OOC games with.

  102. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 16, 2012 10:20 am

Maybe then we can have Amemiya as associate AD to keep the local ties strong. Strong west coast and strong local ties in one department.

  103. A-House August 16, 2012 10:22 am

With the most recent fiasco at UH, only a fool would apply for the UHAD position! Ferd was on the money with his article this am.

  104. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 10:23 am

    @Derek

I’m talking about where did you get your rankings for top Hawaii high school recruits.

  105. Bigislandkurt August 16, 2012 10:23 am

OH goodness no. Sure it worked for Ault in Nevada. But I’d much rather have Coach Chow COACHING. He is already a workaholic as head coach. To infuse the duties of AD to his already full plate? Nah, I no think so.

Gonna be interesting to see who the candidates are.

They used to have nice biographies of the current staff but the new website doesn’t anymore.

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 16, 2012 10:25 am

    BIK,

Chow didn’t seem too thrilled about having to sign purchase orders for copier paper. Doubt he would want to start signing purchase orders for chlorine tabs for the pool etc. I agree with you, his focus should solely be on the FB program.

  108. Bigislandkurt August 16, 2012 10:26 am

word has it that approx. 20 BILLIONAIRES live in this area of the Big Island:

    http://kukio.com/

I’m sure there are others who live on Kauai, Molokai, Maui, and Oahu. Last I heard, some filthy rich guy just bought Lanai.

Hawaii has some seriously wealthy folks. If we only had one of these filthy rich residents pull a “boone pickens” and flood UH athletics with a bunch of cash.

  109. A-House August 16, 2012 10:27 am

Paternalism existed for many years and I saw that with the ILWU in the 40s, 50s, 60, 70s, etc.

The idea of “power” and territorial rights are very closely held by too many individuals who refuse to see above the trees and will never train another to replace him/her one day.

I was very disappointed to hear Ben Cayateno say that the mayoral election is not about rail, but power!

However, “power” is like sand, the more you squeeze the faster you lose it!

  110. Will-I-Am August 16, 2012 10:28 am

Thank you friend of someone who knows Stretch!

    TSAI for A.D.!!!!

  111. markazulu August 16, 2012 10:28 am

SO DISAPPOINTED I Just read a “fan” on the Star Advertiser facebook page say he is a huge fan of Hawaii but Hawaii will never beat USC in a million years an then compared the game as a high school team playing a NFL team! Ludacris then another guy who is so negative not only made remarks regarding our team not being able to beat a pac 12 team but also said our local high school teams could never beat the mainland teams. So Shame where is the Positive vibrations. I for one believe Hawaii has a chance to SHOCK The World!

  112. Old School Dave August 16, 2012 10:31 am

Rick Blangiardi too old to be UH AD? That’s what the mainland media is saying about Norm Chow being a HC. Blangiardi still has a lot of linebacker and ex-defensive coordinator mentality in him. But then again, he wasn’t even called in for an interview the last time he applied a few years back.

  113. A-joe August 16, 2012 10:31 am

Amemiya doesn’t need prior mainland contacts to be a successful AD. He’s proven time and again to have the capability of not only making quality contacts but, successfully implementing bold, new and innovative ideas.

  114. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 16, 2012 10:33 am

Don’t need a Lexus or BMW to get from point A to B. But if you can afford, go for it.

  115. markazulu August 16, 2012 10:33 am

UH should make a shirt saying Shock The World and Expect The Unexpected on it! Since nobody has faith in them anymore! Go Warriors

    =

  116. d1shima August 16, 2012 10:34 am

    Next AD.

Two words: Punahou _______ (you fill in the blank)

  117. HawaiiMongoose August 16, 2012 10:45 am

Mufi as AD… hmm… not sure about that one, but an interesting idea. I like Amemiya but he already has a job.

  118. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 10:46 am

    Carnival?

  119. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 10:47 am

    Save money, put JD back.

  120. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 16, 2012 10:47 am

Mufi would be a very interesting choice.

  121. HawaiiMongoose August 16, 2012 10:49 am

Shoko, re #81, I have to agree. With Boise State apparently on its way to the Big West and Idaho now planning to leave for the Big Sky, the WAC will down to Seattle, Denver and New Mexico State next year. There’s a point beyond which you just can’t rebuild a conference and it looks like the WAC has reached that point.

  122. madeinhawaii August 16, 2012 10:50 am

Everytime Mufi would call a press conference, the BOR, UH Pres, and UH Chancellors would be sitting on the edge of their seats with the hairs on their necks sticking out… I like that…

  123. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 10:53 am

Based on recent elections, Mufi isn’t liked much nowadays.

  124. PIAA DS August 16, 2012 10:53 am

Derek and Jimmy the Lock…I have found in 10 years, lists are nice but the really mean nothing in the college recruiting world. We never know exactly what a coach is looking for or who may be the best to fit their needs. Aside from Manti, I don’t remember when there was one true “top” player in the state that everyone wanted. Our best player my be the best in Hawaii but to small to play in the Pac12, MWC, SEC etc. But technically he may be the best. Right now there are 4 LB’s being recruited by top level programs and all believe the player they like is better than the others. Some say Isaac is the best, other say Ualesi, other say Wesley. As armchair coaches, we can just sit back and watch the game.

  125. shadow August 16, 2012 10:54 am

  126. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 10:57 am

  127. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 11:01 am

    @PIAA DS

I agree, that’s why I asked Derek where he got his info from.

  128. Shoko August 16, 2012 11:04 am

    Requirements for an AD:

    -Business-oriented

    -Innovative fundraising ideas

-Able to communicate and influence administration, boosters and fans

-Break even in terms of revenue and spending

-One year’s worth of savings in bank account to feed the family in case you get fired. (Disregard if you are reassigned…lol!)

-Must have UH or Hawaii ties to inspire sympathy from Hawaii folks when you screw up

-And, most importantly, be convincing when blaming your predecessor for any mistakes on your watch.

    Koakane for AD…Woo Hoo!!!!

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

  130. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 11:10 am

    BIK-

Back in ’01 I had a chance to talk with VC, Barry Weinman. Barry mentioned while at a Bay area VC party he struck up a conversation with a fellow attendee. They both wondered how many in the room had second homes in Hawaii.

So they set out to see who could find the most. They found well over half of a room of 300 had properties in Hawaii.

They then asked each person if their Hawaii property were their primary home. If not, why. Everyone answered no because there’s nothing to invest in and conduct business with in Hawaii. Barry followed with, if there was opportunity would they consider investing in it and making Hawaii their primary home. Majority emphatically said yes!!

Barry wanted to create a culture of innovation in Hawaii with an economic force that will support it. He’s found it to be difficult. Successful local ventures eventually move to the mainland for either of three reasons:

    -better support

    -closer to the market

    -closer to investors

To get these malahini millionaires to be outright philanthropist in Hawaii is difficult. Especially to UH. Even worse to UH football. They have no emotional ties or vested interest to Manoa. They’d rather be philanthropic to their favorite cause or former college Alma Mater.

    But…

if you come up with innovative ideas that solve those three challenges above and show these millionaires a way to make a profit on investing into the UH Athletic program, you’ll see unbelievable money that’ll make our state budget look like pocket change.

  134. Slugger August 16, 2012 11:20 am

ST~ interesting idea re: Chow as AD. Maybe after he’s done coaching.

Eating oxtail soup for lunch at Masa’s…

  135. Warrior Dave August 16, 2012 11:51 am

Interesting concept to name Coach Chow as AD. Timing might be a little off with CC prepping for his first season as HC.

  136. Stretch August 16, 2012 11:58 am

#53 kawika49 – Thanks but it did not come from my pocket….. wish I had that kind of extra money to be able to afford to donate a Pigskin Pigout ticket.

    105. Look in the Star Advertiser several days ago . Had a big write up of all the high school top football players, by position. 2 full pages. Maybe it was Sunday’s sports pages.

  143. papajoe2 August 16, 2012 12:42 pm

What if they made super luxurius boxes at Aloha Stadium? Huge bucks to buy a seat. Rich malahini may buy it because they can. When or if, they go to a few games, or even let their rich friends use it, they may want to ultimately invest in UH. But then again, the boxes may be reserved for the governor or senators. They get everything free anyway, so why give them the boxes. Unless they buy it.

  147. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 1:10 pm

    @Derek

Thanks. I can see why it is subjective and based on fit and needs as mentioned by PIAA DS. Everyone has their opinions such as Scout, Rivals, recruiters, fans, and family. In the end we all wish the best for the local players. Main thing get that education.

  148. Derek August 16, 2012 1:13 pm

Jimmy, look in Thursday edition on August 10. The article was written by Paul Honda. Mr. Honda is very well respected in covering high school sports and he has taken great lengths to determine the top prospects in concert with high school coaches, and other sources that he uses to come up this list. Yeah, it’s not the gospel but it is very good based on production, performance, and potential. It’s the best that we have at this point. And, I trust the people that have seen these players locally than some people from the mainland who have basically know nothing about our players. Coach Chow and his coaches know who the top players are. I trust them than anybody else. Chow has also already gotten Falemalu and Taaua former Leilehua All-Stater out of JC and a top flight QB from Calif.

  149. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 1:17 pm

    @papajoe2

Build the boxes and they will come. Who pays for the upfront costs and construction? How is revenue from boxes divided between Aloha Stadium and UH Athletics? Boxes rented by season or game? Comes with waitress/waiter? A/C? Amenities? Bar? Timeshare?

  150. Bigislandkurt August 16, 2012 1:21 pm

    Ajoe……No more any rich Kama’aina?

And just how long does a malahini need to be here before they get their kama’aina card? 🙂

    BIK

  151. Derek August 16, 2012 1:23 pm

Jimmy, my neighbor’s grandson is Jarinn Morikawa who is the top rated QB from Mililani. He’s a good passer but as far as Division I (FBS) potential that his not for me too say. My son, who coaches Mililani HS soccer said Morikawa has a very good arm and can throw about 70 yards. Morikawa player soccer for Mililani HS before he quit to train and play full-time only on football last year. The question might be his size, 6’0″, speed, strength, and durability, and overall athleticism. I let the talent evaluators make the determination. I live in Mililani and haven’t seen him live, but I have seen him on OC16 telecasts a number of times. Maybe I’ll check it out this weekend or watch OC16. Mililani is playing PacFive and it’s on the tube. Good luck.

  152. Old School Dave August 16, 2012 1:29 pm

I like the idea of luxury boxes at Aloha Stadium. Even some division I-AA school stadiums have luxury boxes. Gotta think out of the box in order to earn revenue (but that’s asking a lot, sometimes).

    http://www.weber.edu/WSUToday/Stewart_Stadium_4.html

  153. jimmy the lock August 16, 2012 1:38 pm

  154. papajoe2 August 16, 2012 1:42 pm

Derek, I coached at MHS too.

  155. papajoe2 August 16, 2012 1:43 pm

    Even coached Jarinn.

  156. Big K August 16, 2012 1:47 pm

I can see where we have strayed off topic. Question is whether Norm Chow could handle double duty? I have seen combined AD/Head Coaching positions at the high school level, but not many at the collegiate level done successfully. Too many logistics, details, assistants, administrators recruiting etc to deal with.

  157. NotNasti August 16, 2012 1:48 pm

I don’t think Punahou Aina (LB for UH) went to Punahou.

  158. d1shima August 16, 2012 1:51 pm

    NotNasti,

But Punahou has certainly gone to Manoa!

  159. d1shima August 16, 2012 1:52 pm

    Podagee,

    You steel get ’em, ah!

  160. Whats up August 16, 2012 1:55 pm

I can’t even count how many local football players that weren’t even offered a scholie and walked on to the Warrior team and turned out to be starters. Moniz comes to mind for me right now. But rankings are so subjective on who is making them. There is always some local talent that is better than others but when it comes to attitude, academics, will, drive, determination, football smarts, leadership just to name and few intanglibles that separate the good ones from the great ones. And those things are hard to scout and rank in the real world. Lets not even mention the DUI’s of players that Chow didn’t recruit. So all we can do is trust in Chow and his staff evaluations of what type of local or non local recruits will be best for the Warrior Football program.

  161. WarriorNY August 16, 2012 1:59 pm

    @37,

That’s a great point about Fantasy Football… You have to think the top fantasy football players in the world would also have an analytical, math based approach a la Moneyball…When I played fantasy basketball, my starting lineups was more analytical than my calculus homework… I wonder how the top fantasy basketball/football/baseball players in the world would be as GMs…

  162. d1shima August 16, 2012 2:03 pm

No mo published stat on how many reps of “book lifting” and “note-taking” times a player does.

Coaches will tell you how they “pay the price” to get better.

Does anyone ask the teacher if he “pay attention”?

I find it interesting that Urban Meyer was so conscious of protecting access to UF practices and has now agreed to ESPN-U Full Access at Ohio St.

If team management were smart they’d have someone post little nuggets of information via twitter to keep the fans interested during camp. It would take almost no effort at all to feed a couple of official posts during a scrimmage, if Idaho can do it why not the Warriors?

    https://twitter.com/VandalNation

They have someone from student media do it. Secrecy? Pfft Just another one of those over-used football maxims with no basis in reality.

Thanks for expressing your ideas right here. The other issue is that if a problem appears with a laptop motherboard, people should not go ahead and take risk involving repairing the item themselves because if it is not done properly it can lead to permanent damage to all the laptop. It is usually safe just to approach your dealer of a laptop with the repair of that motherboard. They will have technicians with an expertise in dealing with laptop computer motherboard issues and can make the right diagnosis and conduct repairs.

  204. Not an Expert August 16, 2012 4:18 pm

Talking about the AD and UH athletics. First and foremost what is the goal of the overall athletic department. Knowing that what is the goal for each individual sports program at UH. Knowing that what is the school and its leaders doing to help each program to reach their goals. Knowing that I believe the coaches themselves believe they can have a winning program. However does it stop there. Winning and hoping for the best. I do not think so.

A blue print needs to be created from the top leaders of the school with input from all the coaching staff, to the support staff, to the athletes, to the students and whomever is involved. Have a major plan of what the achivement levels are wanted. Make it public so the public can get behind it. If there is no vision this is why we are spinning and going in circles. Until a vision and plan is created and followed we will continue to be part of the ongoing drama regarding UH athletics.

  206. shorebreak August 16, 2012 4:27 pm

    Expand funding source for recruiting

Give the coaches more tools to win

    Winning translates to

    increased attendence

Increase the P.R. on teams that are winning ;awareness translates to support, sailing, diving, tennis

golf etc. Why?. There are millionares out there that did those sports.

Work with coaches to prevent preseason injuries in all sports.

    Etc, etc etc.

  207. John Fitzgerald Byers August 16, 2012 4:38 pm

The teams that are winning on the lower end of the spectrum are penalized for winnign with UH’s “if you win with what you got, why do you need more?’ attitude.

    Simple as that!

  208. PowderPuff August 16, 2012 4:42 pm

Anybody been getting the “would you like to donate to UH – YOUR university” calls lately? While I’m all for donating to my alma mater, it pains me to see money being spent on games like musical chairs. ST makes a lot of good points….I am curious to know about this supposed “investigation.” Well, even more reason to donate to Nā Koa. At least you know it’s for a specific program.

  209. jeezy33 August 16, 2012 5:02 pm

It’s pretty ridiculous if you ask me. As a huge Miami Dolphins fan, you can follow any of the sports writers on there for break downs of practice. There is no secrets being displayed that any football team will get any sort of advantage from.

Once again, UH athletics at its finest trying to implement some way to keep fans out. Derek Inouchi or whoever that guy thinks he is finding my full name really has some kind of nerve.

ASking a fan to leave is one thing, but going as far as to finding personal information is another. I sure hope it wasn’t this site that would leak such information because the twitter feed has 0 connection to my personal info and was made specifically for fans to get an update on how our team looks for the season. Also was planning on talking recruiting too.

Whatever though, whether some people like my opinions or not, lost a ton of respect for the fact I wasn’t aware these blogs would ever let out private information.

    August 16th, 2012 at 2:56 pm

The downfall of President Richard Nixon wasn’t just Watergate, it was the coverup that followed. I wonder if a similar situation might happen at UH.

Kapahulu — coverup? Like claiming ignorance and placing JD & Sheriff on forced leave, hiring vendor for investigation (not the State Atty General), create new position for JD for $200+K and say he can’t be AD, spend a lot more $$$ than lost to make nice-nice and proposing to spend more on a search? Well, maybe there could be a coverup… 😕

    SteveM . . .

Apple never said JD cannot be AD. He said JD could apply again.

Clearly, though, JD will never be selected so it would be a pointless exercise.

On the other hand, if JD did such a super-duper job as AD it would be really intersting to see how they handle his application and the ensuing hilarity and hi-jinks the administration does when the do not select him. I wonder if they will include music this time around?

  214. wafan August 16, 2012 5:13 pm

I’ve been a UH football fan for a long time and a season ticket holder since 2000 and I consider myself to be a hardcore fan. However, I’ve never felt the need to know who plays where, what position a player is playing, what plays are run during any of UH’s practices. I want to understand why some UH fans find it necessary to know all the goings on at practice and report them on blogs or message boards. This is just a curious question that I have to get a better understanding of the Warrior fan base. I don’t know, maybe I am not that hardcore?

  216. jeezy33 August 16, 2012 5:16 pm

Lots of stuff about people closing their wallets to UH, but the key to remember, like PP says is that the donations to booster clubs of the various sports goes directly to those student-athletes and coaches.

    Simple as that.

  221. puhi August 16, 2012 5:39 pm

Sorry ST, of all the cockamamie ideas you’ve come up with over the years, that was your first dumb one.

  222. Moocher August 16, 2012 5:40 pm

    It’s pretty simple…..

The coach has set rules for those who attend practice. He has given us that privilege–it’s not a right.

If you don’t agree or don’t want to follow the rules-then don’t go to the practices.

The point is it will only take 1 person to screw it up for everyone. Is it too hard to ask to recognize and respect that when it comes to “reporting” what happened at practice?

If you don’t agree with the rules which by the way are not unreasonable…then maybe perhaps it is you who are unreasonable, and perhaps selfish as well?

    …my opinion 🙂

  223. jeezy33 August 16, 2012 5:40 pm

  228. tommui August 16, 2012 6:21 pm

#215 Wafan – I don’t think JD should apply for the AD job simply because there are too many people upstairs who seem to be calling the shots and usurping the duties of an AD.

The MWC was seemingly handled by President Greenwood and VP Freitas for example. The hiring of the MBB and Football Coaches apparently were done by others.

If the reports are true, apparently the upper campus people were going to hire headhunters to search for AD applicants even before the WonderBlunder.

JD was clear of any wrongdoing. JD is relieved of his duties as AD anyway. The message seems clear that upper campus does not want him as AD even though he was lauded as doing a great job!

If I were an advisor to JD, I would tell him to take the lateral transfer as he has a family to support; he can build up his retirement years and maybe no one will bother him in his new position.

  233. lava August 16, 2012 7:10 pm

Chow’s rules on silence are needless. Does he think the opposing coaches are in the dark about stacking the box. He needs to establish the run to make the play fakes effective and open up the passing game. It is to be expected that our opponents are going to put 8 in the box and force us to execute perfectly in the passing game, which will be a challenge. USC will be a blow out, and at that point there won’t be any secrets.

Coach Jones seemed to understand that much. Hmmm …

  241. oldtimer808 August 16, 2012 8:09 pm

I think a lot of people have the misconception that Coach Chow is all about the run game but if you look at the body of work, he is not hesitant to pass the ball. I doubt you will see opposing coaches stacking the box with 8 bodies to stop the run game that would be very risky as alluded to earlier.

Ray Nagel, Stan Sheriff and to a lesser degree Hermie F. were fairly well connected Nationally. They could expect their calls would be taken or returned when calling schools in big name conferences.

Secretary at Big 12 school, ” sir there’s a guy name Hugh who’s says he’s AD for UH on the line.”

AD or coach, ” tell him I’m unavailable. To call back sometime next week.”

Secretary at SEC school, ” the Ad at UH, JD, is calling again. This is the 3rd time he’s calling this week.”

Ad or coach, “get his phone# and say I’ll call him back as soon as I can.”

This is an over exageration of my impression of the local ADs we’ve had. Good men who bled green. Dedicated, hard working, well liked and well connected locally. But alas, their National stature was based on the office they held rather than their reputation.

anyway…we shouldn’t get in to a tizzy with all this eye-spy stuff. usc got so much money that they have their own satellite orbiting the earth. oh yah, you bet they use it to scout the opponent.

  251. Moocher August 17, 2012 12:22 am

My belief is that the coach made a request. Of corse there are no nuclear secrets going on but I am looking at the bigger picture.

What we think as to what information is ok to pass on and what’s not is irrelevant -we don’t know. It matters to the coach what information is ok to be passed on.

And if we pass something on he did not like, the only thing we are going to hear is “practice is closed” and that ruins it for the rest. In the bigger picture that’s my concern. Me needing to know takes a backseat for a retiree who might not have much to do but look forward to going to practice to pass time. What matters to me is the father who had time to take his son to watch practice. What matters to me is aunty and uncle being able to share something in their day with each other. What matters to me is people having the option to at least say, “hey why don’t we go down and watch practice.”

I used the word selfish and that’s what I was referring to. I would not want to be the guy who ruined it for all just to get a few props. My opinion comes from working in the sports media industry. I was a sports photographer and worked many PGA and Asian Tour golf events. There was a time cameras were allowed, especially digital because they had a silent mode. Then, as dslr cameras became cheaper, most people had one and brought one to golf events. The problem was, they were not trained and did not know when to shoot and the sound of the shutters going off on backswings and settling in at address were so bad and so loud, they banned all cameras from courses.

As a professional photog, I knew when to shoot. I had insight from players and caddies, I had their trust that they can let me in close . Same as Mr. Tsai. He knows much much more then he will ever say to any of us because he has that trust. But for the average guy who does not know what the coach wants or more importantly does not want-he runs the risk of unknowingly ruining a good thing and that’s my main concern.

What I’m saying is my opinion but I believe I am saying it in the best interest for the team and for people who’d like to have the option of going to practice. After all, I do recall lots of grumbling going on when Chow first said closed practices…so let’s not risk it. We’re all on the same team here and apologies to those I offended.

    peace 🙂

Thanks, Kekoa. This project has been on the back burner for around 3 years, and I actually had some photos already. The two days last month when gigi-hawaii had great difficulty in identifying A-joe moved the project up, since we all had fun with it.

But the photos I received surprised me– some were really different. When we find out their identities, most of us will have a forehead smacking moment and mutter “I should have seen that–I just was at a cattle call/karaoke call with him/her”. Or… “Whaaaat? For real…” 🙂

But no final answers until the end of next week. 😉
