Whoops

You know you’re old when you forget to post a blog item.

Apologies.

Anyway, things I learned today:

• Former UH linebacker R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane has earned a callback with Sacramento of the United Football League. The UFL serves as the NFL’s developmental league. He reports next week.

•  Rainbow Wahine softball player Jenna Rodriguez’s nickname is, naturally, J-Rod. She said she is Mexican and Canadian.

•  The UH head coaches are scheduled to have evaluation meetings with administrators this week. Rainbow Wahine basketball coach Dana Takahara-Dias’ meeting is today.

Nice to see the daily blog up … phew… I don’t like sudden death TV series and blogs that end pre-maturely…

    Good luck to R.J!

J-Rod is Mexican-Canadian? With her demeanor, they should call a double shot of Tequila and Whiskey straight on the rocks a J-Rod Walk-off.

    ST,

    A few Q’s:

What did you mean that JD has to pay for World Series rings? Does that mean the team gets them just for making it or does the university have to pay for national championship rings if they go all the way?

Does Bob Coolen’s contract include bonus incentives?

During Coolen’s meeting, Jim Donovan should get the athletic department checkbook out and ready to go… 😎

  36. Garret June 1, 2010 2:24 pm

Bess doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed as “just a slot receiver”, which makes sense because Miami doesn’t use 3-WR formations very much. Their top 2 WRs will get the bulk of the playing time and receptions, so Bess doesn’t want to just be considered the #3 (slot) guy.

Davone Bess has been pegged a “slot” receiver and finally stopped people from talking like that. “I had more plays outside (in formation) than inside,” he said.

Bess expects to work toward a bigger role this year.

“It’s year 3,” he said. “Now it’s just a matter of me working on my craft. I’ve learned a lot these first two years.”

  37. Kazz ($230.00) June 1, 2010 2:25 pm

Some questions Jim Donovan can pose to Coach Coolen:

Where do you think a separate bathroom should be in place for the players use only?

Where can we put the new locker rooms?

Are there any particular corporate sponsors would you like us to approach?

  38. NorthShoreFan June 1, 2010 2:28 pm

LizK..not yet…friday and sat…come back sunday..wil have a couple of friends too…will be at Zenshuji both nights.
although there is net connection, won’t have a puter to post on sat…..like I said this week is a mixed bag again…will be in suspense for the Wahine and Kane ball games…will be mute for the last day of posting…will miss the KKall and jmxxx’s bread pudding, The Lion, It’s Tricky..all da Tsaiko talent, Pride going do Hanalei Moon right? Somebody gotta post all da KKall action on da Tube yeah?..

This site allows you to see which announcers/commentators will be doing the Hawaii-Missouri softball game Thursday at 7 am.

Question-Is there a way to synchronize the radio audio to the TV? I read or heard about this being discussed somewhere before. Maybe someone can call radio shack.

Here’s an idea for 2011. Make the fans use porta-potties and the Wahine and visiting players and staff can use the actual bathrooms. Handicap fans may use the actual bathrooms as well.

I got NO problem with that!

    Hey Everyone –

Anything new since I’ve been gone? Glad to see this site is still up.

Sorry I won’t be coming out there this month. JJ’s tournament was moved from Hilo to Maui (Plantation course), but it was father’s day weekend and I wanted to be with my dad. Then, he tells me “Don’t worry about coming up on father’s day.” Then I realized his 75th birthday is a week later. My, how time flies.

I met Rob Fukuzaki last month at a country club, and will be participating in his charity tournament next month here in L.A. His voice is even deeper and more pure in person. A good guy!

Best to all of you. I promise to not be a stranger.

announcers do their homework on the Wahines.

  79. Kazz ($230.00) June 1, 2010 6:00 pm

    Pomai,

Ill be at work. So far being at the office while a game is happening is something I’ve been used to during this offseason.

  80. Kazz ($230.00) June 1, 2010 6:09 pm

    Duffer,

The Wahine softball stadium is something to behold.

Its a glorified borderline well funded high school facility. There is an airconditioned clubhouse built into the stadium courtesy of volunteer coach Dickie Titcomb’s construction company.

But if you ever come, you can see for yourself the lack of space or infrastructure for a fully functional locker room. It can be done but wil come at a big price.

    Personally, the immediate needs are:

    -adequate lighting for night games
    -renovated press box
-padding installed on wall behind home plate and a padded fence in the outfield
-a more secured batting cage to prevent more vandalism
-at the minimum, a seperate bathroom/washroom for both the Wahine and visiting teams.
    -better sound system
-more handicap access to the bleachers.

  81. chawan_cut June 1, 2010 6:11 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

The other night I wrote an Email to Coach Murphy to thank him and his team for the hospitality and graciousness accorded the Wahine Softball Team. I also asked him to pass on to Kelsi Dunne how impressed we fans were with her commanding performance and how the regional experience will be an impetus for the Wahine in their quest for the WCWS title.

He wrote back thanking me for the nice note and that his team was heartbroken with the loss. But he did say that these are things that happen in sports where there are wins and losses. He stated, “Good luck to your team in the WCWS”.

  83. 808ike June 1, 2010 6:25 pm

  88. curveball June 1, 2010 6:58 pm

    Pomai…working on the boat…sorry

  89. 808ike June 1, 2010 7:10 pm

Kristin Nottelmann has been a work in progress during the season. She
has improved over the season. These stats are during the tournament.

She has pitched 1 no-hitter during the season.

    Tournament stats:

    IP———-31
    K———-22
    BB———5
    ERA——0.87
    H———-25 (2 doubles, 1 Hr)

  90. 808ike June 1, 2010 7:17 pm

Those stats doesn’t tell us about her pitching. Is she a drop ball pitcher?
Does she throw a great riser? Found more info.

    Opponents batting ave. .212

    Line drive outs————-6
    Fly outs———————-13
    Pop outs——————–13
    Ground outs—————-36

By this, she is probable a drop ball pitcher.

  91. 808ike June 1, 2010 7:19 pm

We shall find out if these stats hold water on Thurs.

  94. Slugger June 1, 2010 8:28 pm

Just a little observation about Kristin Nottelmann from watching what I had recorded: she shows very little emotion while pitching. She’s very calm on the mound.

  124. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 2, 2010 12:11 am

Kazz – you need to take a look at HB 2200 CD1 which is now sitting on the Governor’s desk. It contains the following in the CIP section:

SECTION 70.4. Provided that of the general obligation bond fund appropriation for the University of Hawaii, systemwide support (UOH 900), the sum of $62,285,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2010-2011, shall be used for capital renewal and deferred maintenance projects; provided that:

    (2) $1,700,000 for improvements to the softball stadium, including installation of new field lighting system, roofs over the first and third base bleacher stands, and locker rooms;

There’s one other item needed not on your list – upgrades to the concession stand area so that a wider variety of foods can be purchased

To that end, I am willing to raise additional funds from the private sector – not just Tsai-kos – to make sure that the rest of the items are included in the upgrades.

  125. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 2, 2010 12:14 am

The girls at Alabama fought hard – just as our girls fought hard. The ‘Bama girls have nothing to be ashamed of.

I don’t see any reason why they should fall on their swords (Roman style) or commit hariikiri. Nor, if we had lost, would we have had anything to be a shame for. Nor is there any reason why they should be forced to say that Hawaii is a better team.

We won – we beat number 1 seed. We beat them twice in a row. We shown them that we are a great team and on this day, the better one.

Lucky hit? Maybe. A hit to remember? Definitely. And many a time a little luck is better than no luck at all.

If skill was the determinate factor, we would be battling 100%

I’d rather be lucky and win than skillful and lose.

If they are upset by ill fortune – tough – we are in Oklahoma City and they are staying home. Rejoice in that!

  127. Kazz ($230.00) June 2, 2010 12:26 am

    W-Doc,

I think I might have missed it last time you posted the information, but I wasn’t aware that the $1.7 million requested did include locker rooms.

I think of those items the REAL necessary items are the field lighting and locker rooms, if only a part of the $1.7 million were approved I think that the roof over the 1st and 3rd base sides can wait. A lot of softball stadiums don’t have roofs uncompassing all the seats.

To me, things such as the lighting and locker rooms DIRECTLY effect the athletes on the field and that is the MOST important thing.

  128. Ralph June 2, 2010 12:36 am

Sodexo (sp) runs the softball stadium concession, they offer a limited bill of fare, why, small crowds, for them to offer a wider variety of food, snacks, drinks, etc, you got to have the customer base. Once the food and snacks are prepared, if they are not sold, the concessionaire losses revenue. I’m sure they can increase the variety of non perishables but items that spoil or lose its freshness in a week won’t be offered in a wide variety.

  133. Ralph June 2, 2010 3:02 am

We’re moving on up, UH finished 6th this year in the WAC Commissioners Cup out of nine schools. UH finished 7th in ’08-’09. Someday Donovan will head a UHAD that wins the Cup, it’s never been done before in UH history, its highest finish was 3rd.

  134. Ralph June 2, 2010 3:06 am

To win WAC titles we’ve got to have coaches who can recruit, coach and they must have the support of upper and lower campus. But JD can not reward mediocrity, any coach with career wins in the mid to low 50 per centile won’t bring home WAC titles too often or field a team that the NCAA will invite as an at large team.

  135. Ralph June 2, 2010 3:13 am

Since UH will continue as a D1 program fielding 15 teams, men and women, and pay coaches, support staff and the NCAA alloted scholarships like every other team, why not set goals of winning the WAC titles in every sport every year. May not happen but you got to believe that Na Wahine VB shouldn’t be the only sport that we win championships in on a consistent basis.

  136. Ralph June 2, 2010 3:17 am

I’m starting small, I’m stating WAC titles, so don’t jump in with BCS teams and their high end budgets. If we win WAC titles, we get invited to the NCAA regional, we don’t have to hope for an at large bid but a good record can at times improve our chances for an at large invitation.

The Pac-10 is looking for TV market size, football success, and men’s basketball success…if they do not get Texas, they may not expand at all.

And here’s the key, expansion-related comment Scott made in Oregon: “What’s going to add value are schools that can deliver major audiences in key markets that have strength in football and basketball.”

That’s not Utah or Salt Lake City. The big unknown is how much Scott and the Pac-10 presidents value the Denver TV market. Is it enough to give Colorado, which is not a national power in any sport, an equal share of future TV booty?

    It doesn’t seem likely.

When the Pac-10 football and basketball coaches gathered in Phoenix last month, Stanford football coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters, “What we got right now is a good thing. It’s set up really well.”

  140. Garret June 2, 2010 4:02 am

QB that planned to transfer to UH (he is close to Colt) was stabbed.

Sometimes you have to root for the underdog. Perhaps that’s why the minute Sean Barnum, 19, saw Washington Redskin’s quarterback Colt Brennan step onto the turf, he found his role model.

“Sean said that the first time he saw Colt play in Hawaii, he knew the guy was just awesome,” said Justin Jemela, Barnum’s future brother-in-law and close friend. “He also told me that he didn’t think Colt got the respect that he deserved and, in a way, I think Sean felt that no one gave him the credit he deserved as a quarterback.”

Barnum, who graduated from Morton Ranch in 2009, was alledgedly stabbed in the heart with a screwdriver at the Citgo gas station on Franz and Westgreen in April.

Since then, the road to athletic stardom has not been easy.

“Colt Brennan calls and text messages me almost everyday just to see how Sean is doing. He’ll even leave voicemails for me to play to Sean with words of encouragement,” Jamela said.

Redskins officials have also sent over a variety of objects for Barnum including an autographed football with the 22 signatures of notable NFL players, Brennan’s signed game day helmet and a No. 15 jersey made especially for him.

“Sean really wants to follow in Colt’s footsteps. He wanted to play football at a small university and then transfer to Hawaii just like Colt,” Jamela said. “I think all of us have the best intentions of getting him back to where he wants to be one day and that’s the best we can do.”

  144. mctruck June 2, 2010 4:57 am

If the formula the PAC10 gives for admittance to the conference, then I don’t think any school west of Texas would qualify…..in fact, I don’t think half the present PAC10 schools would qualify if they weren’t already in the present conference.

  145. Garret June 2, 2010 5:22 am

    mctruck,

Yes, several Pac-10 schools (probably starting with Washington State) would be kicked out if they wanted to maximize money. However, the Pac-10 requires *unanimous* approval to add or kick out a school, so no school can be kicked out of the Pac-10 unless they agree to it!

  146. 808ike June 2, 2010 5:35 am

    Mctruck,

PAC 10 needs to change their formula as the landscape changes or
get left behind. Look what is happening to the BIG EAST. With all the
poaching that may occur, BIG EAST may not have a football
conference. They taught all they need is a great basketball conference
and they can remain a BCS conference.

When the new contract is established, the other BCS conference may
have MWC for football only and BIG EAST for basketball only, with the
minor sports not part of the BCS. This way the small amount of revenue
generated from TV, will be split between 5 conference instead of 6. It is
all about the $$$$$, no sympathy.
