And Sunday’s winner is …

Once again, the energetic and brilliant Avis Yasumura agreed to serve as our unbiased judge. For the winner of a pair of Sheraton Hawaii Bowl tickets, Avis selects … HiFlyer.

You know the drill. Send me an e-mail at sstsai@hawaii.edu.

Thanks again, Avis, and thanks again to those who participated. Another drawing is tomorrow.

Remember Akoni Lasconia, a linebacker from Saddleback Community College? He still is expected to join the Warriors for the 2010 season. He is trying to accumulate enough transferrable credits to meet NCAA eligibility standards. He also is now known as Akoni Harris.

* * * * *

Another linebacker, Jacob Barritt, is attending classes at Leeward Community College in the hopes of transferring to UH.

* * * * *

Did we mention that Waylon Lolotai, who redshirted this past year, is moving back to linebacker? After returning from his mission last year, he had moved to defensive end.

Suppose Malcolm Lane comes back. What about Jovonte Taylor, who led the team in YAC, taking over the Reggie Bush role in the offense?
And, no, Taylor is not like Bush. But he could be used in that role. (As I watch the Saints drive up and down the field.)

  20. protector December 13, 2009 9:38 am

    Stephen,

Actually i see Lane & Taylor as being very similar although Lane has the edge in experience, albeit taking a one year hiatus. Both have shown flashes of brilliance along with chronic inconsistency & many times being guilty of breaking off their routes, causing easy interceptions by opponents. Both have made bone-head mistakes on kickoffs (fielding kicks going out of bounds to result in the team getting the ball on their own 1 or 2 yard line). Neither has that special something Rodney Bradley has of truly stretching out the field to free-up the slots. Both have been hampered by minor injuries that seem to prevent them from delivering on the promise of ther potential. Taylor has given his best performances when threatened with the loss of his starting position by the steadier, though unspectacular, Royce Pollard (who also had injuries hamper him).

Ideally, both can pick up where they left off & help the team’s vertical game, but I feel the jury’s still out on these 2 gifted athletes being able to bring their A game EVERY game.

I think they’ll be rotating receivers a lot next season. Pilares and Salas will be the best slot tandem in the country. If the O line comes in strong and in shape, look for the offense to be as good as ever next year. Gordie Shaw did a good job with the O line this year. Throw Lister into the RB mix and we should be outstanding there. The Koolaid is mighty tasty as far as I’m concerned.

If a man, like Tiger Woods, has everything at his fingertips. Then why does he have a liaison with a mistress?

I, mean, gees, he has a wife that’s pretty. A young daughter. Lives a life style that’s manicured. And he’s very wealthy. And he’s attracted to Bambi.

Now that he has been stripped of his dignity, and admonished by his peers and sponsors, he’s retreating. So sad. So uncharacteristic of the man, and sport’s hero we become to admire and respect.

I’ll surmise in the aftermath of all this, Tiger’s therapists are helping him come to grips with his infidelity. It would probably go like this, “the act of going after the forbidden fruit is in it self an aphrodisiac.” This statement is true. I hope Tiger sees this. More so, I hope other married men learn from Tiger’s mistakes so they’re not tempted for what is forbidden..

Subsequently, I think, women everywhere are silently rejoicing. For the Tiger Wood’s admission of his transgressions does casts a light on this subject that has been in the dark for so long. It also serves of a reminder to husbands everywhere of only picking from their own tree.

I wish for the turn for the better for Tiger. For, seemingly, he can navigate a golf course deftly. He’s proclaimed as the greatest athlete of all time. He has everything. But then, in retrospect, he should have given himself a compass when it came to moral turpitude.

  136. Garret December 13, 2009 2:52 pm

BSU’s Petersen is called the best value in college football, with TCU’s coach making twice his salary.

Yes, his 48-4 overall record, 31-1 conference mark, three undefeated regular seasons and two BCS bowl appearances in four years have something to do with it. Yes, his innovative offensive approach and his detail-oriented coaching style draw the attention of athletic directors searching for ways to entertain fans and keep football players off the police blotter.

But there is another number that sets fans’ hearts aflutter and athletic directors’ fingers a-dialing: $1.3 million.

That is Petersen’s salary for the 2010 season, a mere fraction of what other top coaches make and the reason the Broncos’ boss is the best value in college football.

Petersen, who signed a five-year contract in 2007 after Boise State’s Fiesta Bowl victory against Oklahoma, is the lowest paid of the 10 coaches in this year’s five Bowl Championship Series games. Petersen made $1.1 million in base salary this season.

Five of the 10 BCS coaches have already signed extensions or new contracts that include substantial raises. Texas coach Mack Brown recently agreed to a new contract that will pay him at least $5.1 million per year. Alabama coach Nick Saban’s recent contract extension bumped his salary to $4.7 million annually. TCU coach Gary Patterson, another coveted non-BCS conference coach, agreed to an extension that pushes his pay to $2.5 million annually.

Winning pays though. Alabama’s athletic department turned a $38 million profit during the 2008-09 academic year, a number that is sure to rise with this year’s SEC title and national title game appearance.

  137. Garret December 13, 2009 2:53 pm

BSU is aware that they need to keep increasing their revenue to keep up in college athletics.

The athletic department trimmed its budget by $750,000 for the current fiscal year. Kustra said that the Broncos can afford to increase Petersen’s salary in these times.

“But we’re all acutely aware of the need to add seats to our stadium. That must be our highest priority when it comes to funding the size of football budget that we require to maintain this level of excellence,” Kustra said. “The long-term answer – and it better not take long-term – is getting some more seats.”

“I hate to say this because I don’t really think of myself as a money guy, but it’s all about money. That’s the bottom line,” Petersen said. “When I think about our stadium and our facilities and what we can pay our coaches and when you look at Mack Brown and Texas and those programs, we’re not even in the same ballpark.”

  139. Garret December 13, 2009 2:57 pm

NMSU’s boosters allege that their donations have been misapplied…this could really hurt future donations to NMSU’s Athletic Department. This is probably a sign of how NMSU is in bad financial shape, but if they get all their donors to stop giving, then their situation will get much, much worse.

More than $120,000 in donations to sports booster clubs at New Mexico State University has been transferred to pay down athletic department debt, according to two donors — one, a former NMSU Foundation employee, and the other a former university regent.

Former Board of Regents President Bob Gallagher, who is also a donor to multiple booster clubs, said the fiscal practice is “underhanded and mean-spirited” and devastating to coaching staff morale.

Such money transfers could have only been done by NMSU’s chief financial officer Jennifer Taylor, with the approval of former Interim President Waded Cruzado, according to Gallagher and a former foundation employee with knowledge of athletic fundraising who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about financial information.

Money Mumme raised for summer football camps met the same fate, he said.

“I would go around and raise money for my camp and at the end of the year, sometimes it would be there and sometimes it wouldn’t,” Mumme said. “If you went over and raised hell about it, sometimes they’d put it back.”

  140. Garret December 13, 2009 2:59 pm

The “nickel-and-diming” of the booster clubs was part of a larger problem of under-funding athletics, Mumme said, recalling an instance where he said his staff was told to return an order of Adidas shoes players were supposed to wear under a sponsorship deal.

“You go and cut a bunch of little, bitty things to save an infinitesimal amount and all you do is convince the kids they came to the wrong school and morale sinks, so you don’t win, you don’t play good, then those kids tell recruits and you end up getting the second or third pick recruits, not the first,” Mumme said.

The money transfers came at the same time NMSU cut money to feed student-athletes on the road to $39 per day (typical per-player food expenses on the road at the less-expensive stops would run at least $60, Mumme said). And, coaches were mandated to raise 10 percent of their operational budget — without being provided fundraising staff, the former employee said.

“I don’t think it’s illegal, but I think it’s potentially an ethics issue with donors,” said the ex-employee. “They want to know what their money’s going for.”

  141. Garret December 13, 2009 3:01 pm

This would be like the money the Tsaikos gave for the bikes to be grabbed by the University to pay off debt. I’m glad that does not happen at UH, but it apparently does happen at NMSU.

“You go out and say, ‘I need you to give this money for this,'” Mumme said. “(Donors) give it and after a season or so, they start hearing rumors about not having this or that and they say, ‘What about the money I gave you?’ More devastating is the effect on kids, whether it’s meals or whatever, you still reduce the morale of the team and the recruiting efforts of the team and that’s what kills you.”

Burger Time owner Kevin McGrath, a major financial and in-kind donor to a number of booster clubs, said he had heard rumors and accusations that money had disappeared from certain accounts or was not used for its intended purpose, but that NMSU had never acknowledged such.

“Booster club money can’t be used to pay off debts. As long as I’ve been involved, I’ve never been aware of that happening,” McGrath said. “I just find it hard to believe. If it’s happening, it needs to be known.”

i think the cornerback actually started his official visit today. i hear he has been under the radar.

the big local boy postponed his official for a few weeks.

and i hope some of those guys make it through the ncaa clearinghouse doorway.
