A very happy birthday for Colt

Colt Brennan threw the go-ahead 33-yard touchdown pass to Jason Goode to lead the Redskins to a 13-10 victory over the New York Jets.
Today also is Brennan’s 25th birthday.

* * *

The Warriors received one point in The Associated Press’ poll.

* * *

• Nate Nasca moved from right slotback to right wideout today. He looked impressive, filling in for Malcolm Lane.
• Cameron Allen-Jones continues to impress as the defensive right end. Starter John Fonoti (hamstring) and Elliott Purcell (strained left elbow) did not practice today.
• The biggest drama was when an Advertiser photographer backed his car into a light post outside the grass practice field. He tried to drive away, but was stopped by a UH official. Campus security was called, and a report was filed. The driver and the car are fine. The pole is day-to-day.

* * *

There was extra pressure on Dan “The Iceman” Kelly yesterday.
Coach Greg McMackin scheduled a “pool day,” abbreviating practice by an hour. But to dismiss practice, Kelly had to kick a field-goal from 53 yards. In previous years, a missed kick meant extending practice. This time, the players were told that they could go to the pool whatever the outcome. But if Kelly missed, he would have to run “gassers.” Kelly converted the field goal — barely. The kick struck the crossbar and bounced over.

* * *

Brett Symonds, a 5-foot-9, 147-pound kicker from The Iceman’s hometown of Temecula, Calif., has earned the nickname of “Ice Cube.”

  25. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2008 7:51 am

I’m hoping they’ll scrimmage today, but I figure they might wait to do that at the stadium.

  26. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2008 7:54 am

    OK, one last query:
Announcer said Dwight Howard shouldn’t have swatted the shot because it had no chance of going in. If it had no chance of going in, why is it a goal tend?

  27. gigi-hawaii © August 16, 2008 7:56 am

What the heck, ST? We know who won. Yay!

  28. Maverick August 16, 2008 7:56 am

  29. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2008 7:56 am

And how can Carmelo Anthony be called for a two-shot foul on a MADE free throw?

  30. Maverick August 16, 2008 7:59 am

What’s the recovery period for a hang nail on the toe,?- assuming he had it taken care of.

O.K. call me naive, but I never had one ( yet)

  31. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2008 7:59 am

Hey, little things lead to bigger things.

  32. gigi-hawaii © August 16, 2008 8:01 am

I always thought ST missed his calling in life. He should’ve been a referee!

  33. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2008 8:02 am

    Maverick:
If they surgically removed the toenail it would have been a three-day recovery, I’m told.
But he’s sucking it up, and they’re going to let the toenail fall off naturally.
I don’t think the toenail affected his loss in the finals of the hot-potato game.

  34. gigi-hawaii © August 16, 2008 8:03 am

Is it against the rules to cut an opening in one’s shoe to alleviate pressure on one’s hang nail?
I think if that were permissible, Alexander could play.

  35. brew808 August 16, 2008 8:05 am

Hmmmmm…. Do “ice cubes” develop into “ice men”? …in Hawaii? …with the warming climate?…without air-conditioning? …and how long does it take? 😀 😯 😆

  36. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2008 8:06 am

    Gigi:
I’ll tell you, when I used to cover basketball, some of the WAC teams had the whiniest fans. Instead of cheering for their team, all you’d hear was: “C’mon, ref, call it both ways.” Over and over. And the home team used to have like a three-to-one advantage in free throws.
After UH lost to UNLV in the NIT, Riley let me go into the locker room. He opened by telling his players: “It’s not your fault. You got hosed.”
Then in the postgame news conference, he didn’t blame the refs.

  37. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2008 8:07 am

Uh, Gigi, even if it were within the rules, football players don’t wear open-toed shoes. They’re not from Spain. (Hey, they started it with the eye gestures.)

  68. FloridaTed August 16, 2008 8:29 am

    Morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister,

( I’ll bring this over from the tail of the last blog):

Just finished reading your story on Rausch, excellent insight, especially the part about both parents crying, that was a nice touch.

One thing is for certain, your eye for talent can never be challenged. Way back you’ve dropped some of your cryptic hints to keep an eye on Rausch, but we all kind of overlooked that and then, during traing camp, it didn’t appear that he would beat out Funaki and Alexander.

Off course, with all the information we have now, everything is in focus and makes sense. Still, looking at his rise within one week, he really must have the ‘ IT ‘ factor and considering his overall lack of ‘real’ game experience, a ton of talent to boot.

I think he is the fastest of all the QB’s we’ve had, as far as I can remember, with the lights coming on and understanding the offense. Without that he would never have been made the starter so surprisingly soon. It still boggles my mind how he ascended from insecure and discouraged to confident gun slinger and offensive leader in a week. How big his upside must be.

Off course, he has a brutal test to start his career, but if he’s able to hold his own against our defense, while playing behind an unfinished O-Line, I sure have a great feeling for the swamp. How good can he become? Nobody knows, but all things considered, the outlook is quite exciting.

Now, over the next couple of weeks, we should be able to solidify the O-Line and we will bring a formidable team to the swamp geckos. My hope and believe went up a few notches again.

Happy Birthday, Coltster, beat the Favre. Have a great NFL career, you deserve it.

  94. Garret August 16, 2008 10:13 am

Brent Rausch’s hometown paper has an article on him today. They just used ST’s story (he has the byline for the article) but I think they added a few words in the first sentence.

Desert Chapel High School graduate Brent Rausch officially was named the No. 1 quarterback Friday by the University of Hawaii.

  95. Garret August 16, 2008 10:15 am

Pretty cool that Brent already made this list from a Michigan paper.

    Today’s topic: 18 offensive sleepers

There’s no order to this list either. But these are 18 guys that you may not know about yet that you will almost certainly hear about before this season is over.

    11. Brent Rausch, QB, Hawai’i: It was a three-man race for the Hawai’i QB job in the spring, replacing Colt Brennan, and Rausch wasn’t even amongst that group. He’s officially the guy now, though, and that status automatically makes him a big numbers candidate.

Brent will have six weeks and three great games to prepare for the WAC opener against San Jose State. SIX weeks is a good block of time to get really comfortable at the helm and lead Hawaii for a WAC Title repeat.

Hopefully our Warriors will get back their injured A-players by the WAC opener. If that happens, Hawaii could run the table in the conference and that, alone, would make for an oustanding season.

    Happy B-day Colt.

    Warriors IMUA!

I’ll be back to chit chat in a little bit. Gotta run a-joe up to practice since he missed the “Stretch Limo” this morning. I’m not the only one still rubbing their eyes.

I want to see the Redskins game, but got to do stuff. Maybe I’ll meet up with them later.

  134. tom mui August 16, 2008 11:37 am

    LIZ:

Definitely need news on how our boy is doing in the Skins game!

Is Michelle finally getting her game back? She’s pau for the 3rd round with error free game, two birds (I think) and is now no. 16! Still think Q-School might be best for her so that she can learn the game/rules/protocol better. Depends what happens in the final round.

And is Esme really putting in a cameo appearance?! My timing sucks. I’m never on the blog when you’re on. Glad I get to see you tonight. You going sing “Fiah”?

  138. tom mui August 16, 2008 12:00 pm

DPK – sorry I missed you today at practice.

  139. Esme August 16, 2008 12:02 pm

    A-sports,

I gotta laff every time someone mentions “Fiah” now. Because of that day someone with the screen name “Pride.” posted on the blog that I looked “hot,” and I accused of being an impostor because the real Pride. was too much of a gentleman to ever say such a thing … and then it turned out to be really our Prideperiod, just making a joke about that song title. 😯

So now I will never be able to sing that song with a straight face.

Oog, Pride., sorry if I made you blush just now. 😳 😆

  140. Esme August 16, 2008 12:05 pm

Hawaiianbod! You call me “aunty” again and I’m putting you in the doghouse with Ralph. 😆

I not famous, unless you count the dubious honor of having the practice of dropping in and out of this blog quickly named after me. 😆

  145. Kekoa August 16, 2008 12:23 pm

Esme ~ Remember, Pride is learning how to play the bass. If he gets that riff down for ‘Fiah’ it will be really cool to hear you two together. That was the best part of listening to you sing that song at my house. A-Joe was rockin’ out on the bass at the time, and you were “wailing mama!”

Gulp! I may have just sealed my fate…I meant no harm about the ‘mama’ label Esme…think of it as being a reference to your hanai son, Jason.

(Kekoa heading back into the basement of the playhouse until BG comes by to sign him out on liberty tonite)

  146. Garret August 16, 2008 12:34 pm

Interesting that the success of a football team can increase interest in students joining the band.

The Marching Jayhawks band, which has lagged behind other Big 12 schools in the number of students, had 239 show up for registration Friday.

Last year, 177 musicians were in the athletic bands. Weiss has his theories for the increase.

“Great football doesn’t hurt recruiting at all,” he said.

The Jayhawks’ Orange Bowl victory against Virginia Tech, coupled with the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship, has led to more students who play instruments showing an interest in marching band.

Emma Willis, an Oskaloosa senior and mellophone section leader, said it was definitely the people and the hand they played in the college athletics experience that made the sacrifice worth it.

“We felt like we battled for those championships with them,” she said.

  147. Kazz August 16, 2008 12:36 pm

    So ST,

Who was catching the bad attention of Coach Mack today?

He looked and sounded P***ED when he asked Tony Tuioti to check the dude’s license to see where he was from.

  148. Garret August 16, 2008 12:37 pm

Warrior opponent this season Washington State had a very committed offseason…I haven’t heard of this type of commitment before.

Have to admit, though, that some Washington State seniors took me aback the other day after a walk-through at Martin Stadium. They’re in the middle of fall camp, the definition of drudgery, but it probably seems like a couple of weeks in Jamaica compared to what they did this summer.

The Cougars, 100 or so of them, didn’t have a beer for more than six weeks. Not to belabor the WSU/drinking cliche, but this is like getting a hundred fans in Philadelphia to give up booing.

Actually, the whole thing started in January, when the Cougars began winter conditioning under coach Paul Wulff. They had some diabolical circuit drills in their indoor facility that began to establish the peer pressure Wulff is trying to inculcate here.

There were the usual sights — players losing breakfasts in trash cans — but there was also a grading system. Essentially, if you showed a championship effort, you got to wear a crimson jersey at the next workout. A middling performance got you a white jersey.

A lousy showing? You wore purple. Purple, the hue of choice 300 miles west of Pullman.

No drinking for the eight weeks of conditioning and summer school. Not just downtown or in campus hangouts, no drinking in apartments.

“You could go to parties; you could do whatever you want,” Rowlands said. “But we were all together, so no one was going to get away with it.”

Finally, less than two weeks from the finish line, somebody broke ranks. And the next Wednesday morning — the only regular day off from conditioning — players met on the field at 6 a.m.

It was an emotional, soul-rending session. A dozen or so players spoke, including freshmen. Senior linebacker Greg Trent was so infuriated he was moved to tears.

“Once that rule was broken,” said Cory Evans, a fellow linebacker, “he just went haywire.”

They conditioned that Wednesday, and maybe the passion that flowed forth that day allowed the breach to serve a purpose.

A couple of weeks later, summer-school grades came in. WSU players, 101 of them, pulled a combined 3.15 grade-point average.

  149. Garret August 16, 2008 12:40 pm

Florida suspended this 5-star DT (a top-10 national recruit) from the UH game. I think that d1shima might have already posted this article, but I thought I’d highlight the DT part.

DT Torrey Davis, a former five-star recruit out of Armwood High School in Seffner, must appear in Alachua County court after being pulled over while driving with a suspended license, according to a public records request through the county courthouse.

Coach Urban Meyer said on Monday that recent academic problems have plagued Davis, a sophomore who hasn’t played a down during preseason camp. Davis won’t dress for the Aug. 30 season opener against Hawaii, Meyer said.

A former top-10 national recruit in the class of 2006-07, Davis was expected to contend for a starting spot at defensive tackle heading into camp.

    Devine throws and INT

  200. LizKauai [Believer] August 16, 2008 2:23 pm

Devine did not look at the Dee…

  201. LizKauai [Believer] August 16, 2008 2:24 pm

Chapman is the QB for the Jets.
    Makes a nice short pass.

  202. Kazz August 16, 2008 2:24 pm

These are just my honest opinions of practice today and if I didn’t mention certain players its because I didn’t bring my roster with me so I didn’t know some people’s #s and I didn’t want to assume who was who.

    O-Line-
I did not watch their drills prior to the 11-11s, BUT… I must say there is improvement from the last practice I attended a week ago. More energy out there as a unit even though our top front 4 on D will have the edge on our top 5 on the o line, still Kia looks the best on the individual drills against the d-line, Adrian Thomas looks like he is loosing confidence in himself as he does not fair very well as a part of the second o line unit and in the 1 on 1s.

Ray Hisatake still seems like a liability at right guard as he and Keith AhSoon both got beat easily at times in the 1 on 1s. I saw AhSoon take a few snaps as the center and nothing bad and nothing outstanding at the same time. But AhSoon at guard = fine, Hisatake at guard = not sure yet.

    Rausch-
Is it just me or does this guy have a smaller than average torso and real long legs? When he takes snaps under center it really looks like he’s taking a knee.

Anyway, he seems fearless in some of his throws and will not hesitate to throw a laser into coverage if he has to. He got picked off a few times today attempting to “thread the needle” down the middle and seemed to get down on himself BUT… he kept at it and was not afraid to make similar throws over and over again.

He got a couple of nice passes for long yardage with receptions by Greg Salas and Mike Washington which drew applause from the fans in attendance.

    WRs-
Doesn’t seem like Dylan Linkner will make the rotation of WRs.
Kealoha Pilares needs to snag those balls when someone is breathing down his neck ala Greg Salas. Seems like Pilares MAY be able to catch some nifty passes during games but if a DB is right on him after the catch, the ball could come loose.
Malcolm Lane… anyone seen him lately?
Joe Avery has some soft hands and could very well see time as one of our WRs.
Aaron Bain needs more time with the “first” receiving unit as I would be more comfortable at this time with him in the slot opposite of Washington than Pilares.
Mike Washington. Should have seen more playing time in previous seasons. PERIOD.
(that’s all I can ID today as I didn’t have my roster with me)
Greg Salas is EVERYTHING that everyone says about him. Right now he is a ROCK on the offense.

    Dline-
Vaughn Meatoga could see time in rotation, but will be VERY good for us in the seasons to come.
Chris Leatigaga should be feared. However he needs to work on his conditioning.
“Tua” Mahaley could emerge as a pleasant surprise at DE this year.
CJ Allen-Jones is a work in progress. Coach Aranda was on his case during some drills that required some upper body “juking” by the d line.
Cameron Allen-Jones seemed to get more reps today than I remember seeing or reading about.
Joshua Leonard will be a senior this year. WE WILL MISS HIM NEXT SEASON. The guy has a true motor. If Quinten Beaver drops the weight he was asked to and develops the kind of burst Leonard has… we’ll all be saying “Who’s Glenn Dorsey again?”
Fale Laeli was still not in pads today and so was David Veikune. Nothing seems serious for them and seems like a precautionary measure than anything.
Rocky Savaiigaea was out there today with a massive cast on underneath his shirt. Seemed to be good spirits.
Keala Watson is solid as usual.

    Linebackers-
I didn’t watch this group much today so I maybe off.
    No Solomon Elimimian today.
Adam Leonard is back in full pads but either did very little or only did warm up drills. He did not participate in the 7-7s or the 11-11s.
Tyson Kafentzis saw some time with what looked like the “first” line defensive unit as did Brashton Satele who popped someone good today in the 11-11s (didn’t see who tho). Satele also had some great speed and timing on a few blitz packages in the 11-11s.

    DBs-
Another group I did not take too much notice of.
Miano had them working on the tip drills in which Keao Monteilh did very well at. Miano also had Steele-bo chucking some very hard passes to them and they had to catch the ball instead of swatting it down.
Mana Silva WILL be a starting safety for us.
Desmond Thomas was not in pads and was on the bike for most of the practice. Personally I’d feel better with E-Rob over D. Thomas in the depth chart at safety.

    HB’s
What else can I say? I am a FAN of Coach Gerke. What he has been able to do with this unit is nothing short of amazing compared to the more “relaxed” style of the now departed Wes Suan.
No doubt about it, but LWJ is Gerke’s boy and for good reason. I see the reports of LWJ around and today I either missed it or I just didn’t see any problems what so ever.
David Farmer looks like he will be more of a legitimate threat as a RUNNING back as opposed to his “blocking” back assignment from last season.
Jake Heun is still out there but not in pads.
Libre had some good runs off of the shotgun.
Some of the shovel passes didn’t work out so well today during the 11-11s.

    Service Teams Unit
I believe they worked on punt returns today 2xs. Not sure yet what is Grasso’s full potential of nice long punts with good hang time.
No field goal attempts by Dan Kelly today and the only time I saw him was about an hour before practice started as he was running/walking laps with Jake Huen, Daniel Lofton, and Jameel Dowling around the field.
David Farmer was working as the long snapper earlier in the day. His snaps seem to get off as quick as Ingram but do not yet have the height or the distance Ingram has.

Overall it was a better practice than last week Saturday. On offense I think we will be effective moving the ball but we were truly spoiled in the past two seasons with the “FIVE HEADED MONSTER” (aka Colt, Davone, RGM, J-Riv, and CJ in 07 and Ilaoa in 06).

I am concerned with the vocal leadership on the offense as everyone seems to be going through the motions of being elevated to starters when they barely received any reps in prior seasons.

Ever since the spring, I have not really watched the defense at the practices because I am NOT worried about them. They are our strength this season and for many seasons to come, but the offense needs a few games to really gain confidence and hopefully by then we will not be fighting for our bowl game or our 2008 WAC Championship “lives”.

Thanks for the report, Kazz. Your impressions are pretty much the same as what I’ve seen the past two weeks, especially regarding Washington, Leonard and Meatoga. Although, I hope I’m right about Hisatake. You probably hope I’m right too. So Letuli wasn’t out with the O-line guys today?

    ST,

So that’s what the commotion was about.

For some odd reason I was watching that guy with Derek Inouchi talking to a security guard near the fence and I thought to myself, “hmm… I wonder if his car fell into the pond….”.

I was joking with Myki this morning that I better remember to put my parking brake on just in case. It was my first time parking there.

    Jason,

Avery looked good today. There was a good amount of time where the WRs dropped NO balls at all during their lone drills with the QBs. It reminded me of years past.

  234. Jason August 16, 2008 2:52 pm

And good for Nasca, I was concerned that he’s in a logjam at slot, behind Washington, Bain, and Pilares. The Z position is all about speed, and he’s got plenty of it. 😀

    Hi, LizK!

I just got a hand-me-down old iPhone from my son. He just got the 3G version.

Myabe you can help me. With Safari, it seems that to refresh, you have to get to the top of this blog. Then after refreshing you have to scroll all the way down to see the new entries. Is there any other way

To “scroll” to the bottom of the page, tap “Add a comment”. To get back to the top of the page tap the bar at the top of your screen (where your digital clock appears). At least that’s what I’ve been doing…

  240. Kazz August 16, 2008 3:00 pm

    WarriorMojo,

YES. I hope you will be right about Hisatake.

    Oh and by the way…

    UNDER ARMOUR APPAREL UPDATE 08/16/2008

UH Rainbowtique on Ward has a new UA polo. At first glance it looks like an old one BUT it has the UA logo (sans tapa) on the sleeve like the first ones and has “Hawaii” on the left chest. It’s ribbed giving the “stripped” look and for OUR pleasure as well 😆 😉 .

But they also have a new “training tee”. NOT like the ones seen on the practice field or the one Jake Patek is seen wearing in yesterday’s blog photos. This is kinda plain and not worth 30.00 in my opinion. There is also another green tee with an extremely faint “H” logo and tapa print on the chest. Kinda fugly.

But I will be visiting the bookstore on Monday after practice is over as I’ve been hearing non-stop that they have more things in stock. Whether this means more in terms of quantity of the same items or more new items I have no clue, but I’ll keep you all up to date.

Oh and for da tsaikettes. There are new clothes for da Wahine in the form of “baby-tees” from UA and some new hoodies and other “baby-tees”.

  270. Jason August 16, 2008 3:24 pm

San Fran update: Tackle by Jeff Ulbrich.

  271. Kazz August 16, 2008 3:26 pm

    Tom Mui,

The way he is positioned taking the snaps under center was the second thing I noticed about Rausch. To me it really looks like he’s on one knee prior to the snap. It looks like a 7-footer taking an under center snap from a center who is 5’5″ and John Estes is not short by any means.

Again the first thing I noticed was his build. At first I thought it was the way he wears his jersey during warm ups and some drills. He has his jersey rolled up above the bottom of his QB protective jacket leaving the pads exposed so I thought this made him look taller.

But today I got to watch a lot of him and he does have a shorter torso and very long legs.

Greg Alexander is either Raush’s height or taller but he does not look so crouched down as Rausch when he took snaps under center and Alexander’s build has neither the extremes as Rausch appears to have.

But watching Rausch “pop up” from under center today I realize that MAYBE his apparent preference to take a more defined kneeling position under center gives him more mobility in taking those backward steps as opposed to just bending the knees and “hunching” over.

***For those that haven’t seen it in person.***

Imagine what a QB looks like when he takes a knee. This is how Brent Rausch looks like when he takes the ball under center.

His back is a little straighter than other QB’s which also gives him a more “compact” appearence under center.

Regardless, from a such a low starting point he has no problems dropping back and releasing from what I saw.

Just my observation. I am not an expert on the position and mechanics of QBs but I’ve seen tall QBs and I’ve seen “lanky” ones too, but I can’t recall a QB with such a “low” stance under center before.

  272. LizKauai [Believer] August 16, 2008 3:28 pm

    Jets are marching.
    2nd and 10 on the 50

    Jets FG is GOOD

10-6 Jets and it’s time for the birthday boy!

  277. Kazz August 16, 2008 3:35 pm

    Tom Mui,

You know what I just realized JUST NOW.

I don’t want to make like I’m picking apart Rausch (I also realized I spelled his name wrong several times in my previous post), but I guess he has something “quirky” about his game.

Hmmm lets see… the last time a JUCO transfer from a Cali school played for UH and had 3 to play 3… the last time a QB at UH had something about his game that was visible and some people commented on (i.e. sidearm throwing motion)…

    Who’s that guy again??? LOL!!!

I know Rausch has yet to have a game under his belt but for now and for us fans I’m having fun “making comparisons”.

But like Rausch said himself, he doesn’t want anyone making comparisons to Colt or Timmy Chang out of respect for the former Warriors and for the fact that he wants to make his own mark and I can and will respect that.

    Colt starts at their 29.
Nice short pass on the first play – then the TV makes a big deal out of Favre.

Mason has a nice run but a flag is down… holding…. argh!

2nd and 12 and Mason runs for 3.

  279. LizKauai [Believer] August 16, 2008 3:39 pm

    Colt is sacked.
    Blitzing Jets…

  280. Jason August 16, 2008 3:39 pm

San Fran update: Sopoaga jumps offside (the third offside for SF), but at least he tackled the running back behind the line. 😛

Wash punts and will start on their 30.

  282. LizKauai [Believer] August 16, 2008 3:42 pm

From what little I can tell about Davone, they played him early (yea!) and a bunch of other guys are getting the passes from Henne. They lead 16 to 0

San Fran update: Takeo Spikes (Jeff Ulbrich’s main competition for a starting role) blows his coverage on Donald Lee, but Lee drops the easy TD.

  294. LizKauai [Believer] August 16, 2008 3:51 pm

Colt ends up 4/5 for 79 yards and 1 TD. He should have been 5/5. The one Inc hit the receiver on the hands and he dropped it.

    http://theredskinsblog.com/

“As of this minute, Colt Brennan is the gunslingeriest gunslinger in this game, but did he move the ball TOO quickly? 1:09 is a lot of time for Brett Ratliffe.

Also, nice to see former Terp Jason Goode on the receiving end of that touchdown. And, since Zorn’s stated reason for moving Brennan to the fourth quarter was to see what he could with a two minute drill, that has to be rated as pretty solid success for the birthday boy.”

  334. Kelli August 16, 2008 4:36 pm

Hooray for Colt! I’m sooo happy!!! I have to tell the lil Warrior when he wakes up from his nap.

  335. Nelson from DC August 16, 2008 4:36 pm

Well, another week, another quarterback controversy in DC. The “Redskins Overdrive” post-game show had a nice interview with Colt and introduced him as the hero of the game. Colt stayed very humble throughout the interview. Now they are about to interview Jason Campbell by qualifying his performance as “not his best start”.
It was nice to hear Joe Theismann say that Colt has the same “it factor” that Brett Favre has. I bet that this is a nice birthday for Colt.

  336. Nelson from DC August 16, 2008 4:36 pm

Sorry, that is the “Redskins Overtime” show…

  337. Nelson from DC August 16, 2008 4:39 pm

You would think Robert Kekaula was running the Redskins post-game show, every interview seems to involve at least one mention of Colt Brennan, even drawing a very nice comparison to Brett Favre because of his “gunslinger mentality” with the game on the line…

The game recap on the official Redskin’s site. Colt was mentioned, but the author made it seem like more of an afterthought.

Then again, I understand this is PRESEASON, and everyone is trying to temper the hype.

    However…

GO COLT!!! Show’um all what’s up!

    Ok, I’m done.

  344. Pauoa Boy August 16, 2008 4:50 pm

Congrats Colt, nice that Theismann said you have the “It” factor, only thing is, your “it” factor is not like Favre’s…it’s better! Although Coach Zorn wants to help in developing your game and bring you along slowly, I know he’s smiling ear to ear inside cause he has a future Pro Bowl and maybe Hall of Famer on his team. I’m sure he knows you are not a typical quarterback but instead a great playmaking and exciting quarterback. Everyone here and in DC wants to see you play. The Hog Town fans know they have something special…a playmaking QB thats been missing since Mark Rypien days. You are by far my favorite QB and I wish you continued success throughout your career! Go Colt and “BEAT THEM F***ERS!!!”

  345. gettingbye August 16, 2008 4:51 pm

    Liz,

    I’ve been listening to them….

How was that Interviewer in the lockerroom, “Let’s get Colt, while we’re here…” and then moments later, “All right, that about wraps it up down here!”

I wonder if Colt decided to hit the showers at that moment. lol

  346. tom mui August 16, 2008 4:54 pm

COLT – not bad for a systems QB!!!

KAZZ: I didn’t think you were picking on Rausch – but it did strike me that he was so low-profile when he was taking snaps under center.

  347. Beowulf213 August 16, 2008 4:59 pm

Sorry to just but in…..we wanted to tell Stephen thanks for putting a picture of Jacob on the blog. It was good to see his smile. He had a very difficult spring semester. Coach Mac has stuck with him and we are grateful. Mac has him helping with the team and stands on his goal that all students will graduate. Jacob took courses this summer and has a few left for the fall. December 20, 2008 is on our calender for graduation. We continue to read the advertiser serveral times a week. We now have our first grandbaby and he has garnered a lot of our attention. He has big hands. We think he will either be a quarterback, basketball player or who knows maybe he will even play an instrument. He hasn’t met his Uncle Jake yet, but hopefully he will at Christmas. We will be following the team this fall and look forward to a good season. Best wishes to everyone!

  348. Pauoa Boy August 16, 2008 5:03 pm

    QB Comparisons

Wish everybody would stop comparing Colt Brennan to ancient Brett Favre. Brett is Brett and Colt is Colt. I’m telling you right now Colt Brennan will be better than Brett Favre! I don’t care what anybody says, and no I didn’t fly into the future or call a psychic hotline for this prediction. I guess I’m just feeling “It” that Colt is a future Pro Bowl QB and maybe Hall of Famer!!!

Same with Brent Rausch, stop comparing him to Colt or Timmy. Brent is Brent and will do what Brent Rausch does. I got over the fact my boy Funaki ain’t starting…YET…but since Rausch has been named the starter, I’m going with it. I’m sure if Brent has been named the starter by Coach Rolo and Coach Mack he must really be…That Good! Good luck Brent, make us proud, and lead our team to the Top 25 where it should be. You are the man now, so git r’ done! Au’ryte time for the season to get rolling already…Oline better get your chit together and protect our boy Brent!

  349. Pauoa Boy August 16, 2008 5:10 pm

curveball – if dumbarse Martz really wanted Colt he wouldv’e drafted him. He will forever live in regret on his decision not to draft Colt and stick with that bum Alex Smith. Colt Brennan would definitely have been named the starter from day 1 on the 49ers and I guarantee good ol Smith would have been chit canned. It’s only a matter of time that Colt will unseat Viagra taking Collins, and injury prone Campbell and be the face of the Redskins franchise!

If the 49er’s drafted him I think he would probably be starting…

“probably”??? IMO he would be starting…….right now today.

yep, a LOT of mainland 49er fans were biased with the ‘system’ and ‘weak WAC’ stereotypes. it was also amazing how they’d use one game (SB against arguably the #1 team) to take down 3 great years?

    anyways, too late now.

  371. Pauoa Boy August 16, 2008 6:04 pm

Jason – Not speaking NFL but in college, I liked Dixon before he got injured… probably won’t play for a long time in Pittsburgh but Steelers probably consider him to be somewhat of a Kordell Stewart type. To me he was playing really well before the injury and could’ve been Heisman material too. Although we all know Colt should’ve won the award in 2006 and 2007!

    # 15 – Ryan Grice-Mullen, #57 – Olin Kreutz, and #45 Leonard Peters are all still listed on the Chicago Bears Team Roster.

  385. cocoBEAN August 16, 2008 6:23 pm

Hate to bring this up, but for two years JJ did say he had the best football player in the country. When asked directly, he said yes, Colt is better than any other college QB, he’d pick Colt ahead of any of them. Said it for two years……hyping your player or honest evaluation?

Hawaii could be playing 4 ranked teams before half the season is done.
Florida, Oregon St, Fresno, and possibly Boise St.

Add another to make 5 teams with Cincinnati at the end of the season.
Five potential ranked teams can launch Hawaii into the Top 25 if we just win. Especially when 4 of those games are away.

    ATTENTION:
Somebody did not like the fact that we’re using a Stretch-donated UH media guide as a blog prize.
That somebody then sent two — TWO — e-mails of complaint to another newspaper in town.
Thus that somebody has been SMU’d, until further notice. Or until he publicly apologizes.

    There’s a contest?

Hope the prize doesn’t become STRETCH!

I want to give a quick shout out to a few more tsaikos who made donations to PIAA. Sorry about the delay, Kevin had ACL surgery (in Tucson) on Tuesday so Im earning more frequent flier miles.

    Thanks out to:

  403. bighilofan2 August 16, 2008 8:22 pm

    Mr. Sadowski,

you can now count as former friends companions who currently hold State oversight positions. you’ve put Gov. Linda Lingle, Lt Gov. Duke Aiona and your fellow “commisisoners” in a extremely awkward position. You are holding up our UH Warrior team.
You stand next to Herman Frazier on my list, idiot$,
to be publicly castigated for messing up things for Warrior Nation. delay is all you’re causing….

now your force UH attorneys to make A$$ out of you. You don’t have to worry about them doing the job though, sir, i intend on pie ping up everyday about your idiotness.

and I do not care a rats a$$ that there are officials in middle management at UH who tend to dot the eys and cross the tees, givin you hope that this will all be done nicely in the “process.”

we’re going to “process” you, Mr. Sadowski. Those with the name “SADOWSKI” will wish you used common sense in figuring out how this was going to go. Speaking for myself, I intend on publicly following your actions, and the UH attorneys too, because injunctive and declaratory relief should have been thought about a month ago, and for UH to be sitting on the stick and not anticipating that you’d be acting like a IDIOT is negligent on their part.

SO SLAM <b?SADOWSKI, MR. STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL. SHOW ME YOU CAN PLAY DEFENSE! and pah leeezz do not put one of your slow pokes on da line. Warrior Nation deserves better! UH football is one of the few bright hopes in Hawaii that unites all of us

    GO WARRIORS!!!!.

  404. duffer August 16, 2008 8:23 pm

Never has a Zip Min yet! Looking forward to it. But I think I’ll wait for the crowd to subside!

  405. bighilofan2 August 16, 2008 8:45 pm

    SADOWSKI

come Monday morning I am making a number of telephone calls to the State Attorney General’s office. I am going to get the name of the person who is handling the UH lawsuit against you. If there isn’t a UH attorney handling the lawsuit, we are all going to know it Monday evening. I am going to post the results on the blogs on both major newspapers. I am going to keep the State AG’s office honest in their handling of your bachiness. And I am going to post the results here, and if I am blocked from posting the results here, I am going to call my friends who post here, because the word is going to get out really quick. Because you sir, are holding up our Warrior Nation Football team from getting better sooner.

I helped fix the JUGS asap. What are you doing for Warrior Nation????? Causing trouble?????

Face it, Sadowski, junk kine action you!

  406. bighilofan2 August 16, 2008 8:54 pm

If a dec action or an injunctive relief action isn’t filed really really sooon, you’re all going to know it. And i’m passing the buck right back up da chain of command. talkin is one thing. doing is where I’m at with UH football. Greg McMackin, Greg Alexander, Inoke Funaki, all da braddaz are busting their butts. you can tell by the injury reports.

so to have a loser come along and tell me its the “process,” I say go fly a ?x/@#&ng kite and get our of our way!

i’ll bet Sadowski’s a spinmaster. who is gonna use his company for anything now? who is going to work for him now? only family, thats for sure….

my problem with you, Mr. Sadowski, is that you’re holding up our team. gtfootw… tuuti fruuti…

  407. Ruggo August 16, 2008 8:56 pm

    BHF2 – Well said!!

Mr. Sadowski, do you know exactly what you are walking into? I am amazed by your arrogance and stupidity to actually go out and protest this bid. You really don’t seem to want to help out warrior nation, right? It’s all about money, right??

Damn Idiot – Yeah, you – Sadowski!!

Read PaperCrane’s post to HA Ferd’s article today. Obviously da bugga wants to talk his way into a BCS bowl. Obviously not a person ah akshun, might even be related to SADOWSKI, or is a spoil sport an no like UH Warrior Nation get ahead.

get americans who just no like admit day wrong. radda talk about being “right” dan doing right. Due process. Due diligence. In da world ah sports, dat means day no can hold da line. excuse makers! junk kine dat kine. junk junk junk.

PaperCrane, we know what the bids were. SADOWSKI lost. Trying to use a rule he made up to disqualify anodda guy when da UH already said publicly dat Hamocon’s team won, day lookin at their own rules. So da cat is outta da bag, period. i ain’t lettin the cat back in. We going grind SADOWSKI.

da bottom line is this: SADOWSKI

IS IN THE WAY OF WARRIOR NATION

so ATTORNEY GENERAL, file a lawsuit against SADOWSKI asap. ask for quik kine akshun! no worry about da big legal words. results. we lookin for fast results. Flick da words!

    Brennan steals spotlight from Favre
Rookie QB outshines Jet with winning touchdown

    David Elfin
    Sunday, August 17, 2008

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. | Colt Brennan put a damper on Brett Favre’s big night. The future Hall of Famer was excellent in his New York debut, but Washington’s rookie quarterback made the biggest play, beating the blitz to hit tight end Jason Goode with a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter that beat the Jets 13-10 Saturday night at Giants Stadium. …

    SADOWSKI

listen very carefully. BY THE TIME THIS IS OVER,
EVERYONE IN HAWAII IS GOING TO KNOW
SADOWSKI was responsible for holding up the
COOKE FIELD FIX, and is hiding behind a “rule’ that
SADOWSKI created but UH didn’t follow, for good
enough reason. Like a Govt bigwig said, IT JUST
DOESN’T LOOK RIGHT! So what idiot Judge does
he think is gonna back him up? It ain’t gonna
happen. We’re going to make sure it don’t happen.
Its important that Warrior Nation knows you are
    a idiot.

btw, somebody know the name of the other idiot(s) who put the “rule” on the books?

boy, its time like this that I wish my friend got her butt back online. we can use her now! c’mon SW, where are you? need your input now.

    Hiya LizK.

no worries, my friend. dis bradda is not gettin a hart attack.

sometimes Ke Akua needs a little guidance. not sayin us lowly peeps can do anything about the Universe, it is what it is….

but peeps like SADOWSKI and those who can affect the process that affects what we care about, Warrior Nation, I’ll admit this to you: it is going to be my mission to “INFORM THE UNIVERSE” that we got a babooza in da house. 😀 a big babooza. 😀

  423. gigi-hawaii © August 16, 2008 11:07 pm

Liz, I didn’t see Zorn’s press conference in the link you posted. Instead, I saw an interview with a retired Redskins player. Forgot his name. Anyway, he said some nice things about Colt.

  424. gigi-hawaii © August 16, 2008 11:10 pm

That Sadowski is all sour grapes because his bid didn’t win. By hook or by crook, he wants the contract. Maybe we can all shame him into submission.

    Go for the jugular, BHF2.

  425. gigi-hawaii © August 16, 2008 11:19 pm

Maybe we should blitz the HA, HSB, Midweek, and Ka Leo with letters to the editor.

We could also submit 500 word columns to Island Voices (HA) and Gathering Place (HSB).

  426. Hitman24 August 16, 2008 11:26 pm

“The biggest drama was when an Advertiser photographer backed his car into a light post outside the grass practice field. He tried to drive away, but was stopped by a UH official. Campus security was called, and a report was filed. The driver and the car are fine. The pole is day-to-day.”

I wonder if this posting will hurt the photographer’s case since he tried to drive away a la “hit and run.” Whoops!

For some reason, the clips are not in order and it starts by playing the 8/15 interview with Whatshisname. And then, if you click on the 8/16 press conference with Zorn, it asks you to register to redskins.com.

I personally caved, figuring I’ll be visiting the site again… many more times, so why not? Anyway, when the press wants to here about Colt, poor Coach gotta give in and feed those hungry bastards. haha I’m so glad Coach is coming around and giving props to his young star.

you know the story, bwaaaaaaah, bwaaaaaaaaaaaah, bwaaaaaaaah, and the interesting part is when statements are made that are false. upon further review, no credentials as required.

too go behind ST’s back, and complain to ‘the other guyz’ is nothing short of well, you figure it out. so sad when people feel that they have the ‘upper hand’ because they can send an email……….sheeeeesh, good thing it’s sunday, i gotta go church.

    mei ling,

last night i was the mix master, went from margarita, to mojito, to moe moe for some, haha.

good time, i had the blender blending, and also crushing the mint leaves with the lime juice….like the mojito commercial with Esme doing the tantalizing dance moves.

great night, awesome to see Pride dancing with Esme, mrs bulla, and homey. not often Pride gets to dance with 3 lovelies….

bulla’s bombers have grown in number, now they are a squadron, based in honolulu…whew, felt like an air raid at KK. haha, and not only uniforms, but they have props……what a night.

just good to see everyone, getting ready for another season….take care, blessings to all, and be safe

Anyone know who was the Hawaii quarterback coach for Chang and Brennan?

    Joel,

The QB coach for the 9 years that JJ was at UH was Dan Morrison. He was the QB coach for Chang, Colt, and even Rolo (UH’s current QB coach).

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    LizK,
good morning. 12 days before I could be sittin next to my friend from Kauai on da goal line in row 37. WOW!!! i should be gettin my Florida Tix anyday now and will update you then. They said they were mailing em out Friday.
The lesson I’ve learned this season is that if you buy the tickets from the home team, a class team like Florida, they’ll give the visiting team’s athletic dept time to look good to their fans, and will delay mailing out their tix until after the visiting team’s ticket dept mails theirs out first. so my prediction is they’ll be giving me the leftover seats, meaning the ones Hawaii turned back, meaning the upper decks of sections 43, 47. etc. das muy prediction. we’lll see.

BHF ~ My friend, there is nothing more inspiring then waking up after a having a great time with the Tsaiko Ohana, then to have your take on things. And then I read your post this AM with your personal promise of smearing the name of one D. SADOWSKI like Graffiti on a H-1 Freeway sign!

Whoa braddah!…I was getting ready to call Pauoa Boy to bring in Da Marines! Instead, I’m takin’ the politically correct route and calling my good friends down at Aunty Linda’s puzzle palace to put pressha on your choice of *Baboozka* of the week!

  479. Jason August 17, 2008 8:53 am

Filipino male hula kahiko? I think the original title for this blog post is very fitting: “What’s wrong with this picture?” 😛

  480. bighilofan2 August 17, 2008 9:01 am

What is Dennis Sadowski thinking? That his is the lowest legal bid?

The “rule” that Dennis Sadowski and the “Board” promoted, was there a public hearing and notice for the rule? Was that rule enacted per HRS Chapter 91? Was that “rule” signed by the governor? Is it a Rule: Tanaka v. DLNR decided 12/31/07, Haw. App Ct. You lose Dennis Sadowski and you’re gonna lose samoa.

Dennis Sadowski, you’re only exposing yourself to public ridicule day to day! And you’re gonna expose your friend(s) to public ridicule. Their real names are gonna come out in the wash. Is it worth it???

  481. tom mui August 17, 2008 9:02 am

that should incite a riot………a hui hou

  484. bighilofan2 August 17, 2008 9:12 am

    UH Big Peeps,

wat, yu need samoa tutorial? wat yu tryin fo say when yu say da “rule” is only an advisory: Its NOT a rule. So nuff already… get on wit signing da contract for Hamocon, authorize da start up and let Sadowski file an injunction action. He cannot claim you violating a rule. Dat Board advisory is not a rule. you didn’t change anything from what was publicly authorized as a rule… the “advisory” was not a properly promulgated rule so it is not a rule (Tanaka v. DLNR, Yamada v. DLNR decided 12/31/07)that was violated by giving the job to Hamocon. shibai kine delay, das all.

an if it is a rule, den da “advisory” stuff wuz all shibai, an da Gov going have hell to pay, das all. da next public blass goin be even mo farowshus.

now I like see some public a$$ whippin pronto….
You guyz holdin up Warrior Nation’s field fix. dat is da focus: fix da field now!!!!!

  485. Garret August 17, 2008 9:14 am

    BigHiloFan2,

I thought I would save you some research and help you with some of your questions. Sadowski was appointed by Lingle in 2004.

Over 150 Honolulu residents appointed by Gov. Linda Lingle to serve on various state boards and commissions were officially sworn in today at a ceremony held at Washington Place. Chief Justice Ronald Moon presided over the ceremony, which is the first of several to follow across the state. “Serving on a board or commission is one way for the public to actively participate in state government and help improve our communities,” Lingle said in a press release. “We appreciate the members’ willingness to volunteer their time and diverse expertise, and we value the contributions they make to help government be more responsive, efficient and effective.”

Denny R. Sadowski – Contractors License Board

  486. brew808 August 17, 2008 9:15 am

KHNL Note: “Applied Surface Technology had the next lowest bid at $883,863. Two other bids were $1.05 million and $.125 million. Hamocon has a C-27 landscape contractor license, and his main competitor Dennis Sadowski, with Applied Surface Technology, has a C-68FF license. Sadowski, who is on the contractors board, complained, and then was assigned the task of reworking the rules, according to the Contractors License Board’s meeting minutes from October 2007. The contractors board is looking into which license is necessary to actually do the job.”

This report on NBC Sports’ website makes Colt sound like he was kicked out of Colorado for robbing an apartment! I really don’t like how this is worded and it seems pretty far from explaining the actual situation!

He practically lets his defensive assistants run a separate operation and gives second chances to players with criminal records.

The latter was a mutually beneficial arrangement at Hawaii, allowing him to accept players such as record-setting quarterback Colt Brennan after he was kicked off the team at Colorado for his involvement in a burglary case that led to a criminal conviction.

  494. A-House August 17, 2008 9:36 am

    Football recruting strategists:

UH has offered scholarships to the # 1 and #2 high school seniors-to-be in Hawaii.

One still has interest in playing for Hawaii while the other basically told UH to take a flying leap as he wants to get off this rock and make a name for himself on the mainland.

    What would you do:

    1) pull the offer now and offer it to another player who really wants to play for the Warriors?

    2) pull the offer when a verbal commitment is made to another team?

    3) keep the offer on the table until NLOI day and keep this scholarship open for a player who may make a last minute decision to play for UH?

My letter to the editor —

How dare Denny Sadowski hold up the repair of Cooke Field! He created a rule to limit bidding to licensees so that he could have an unfair advantage. Fortunately, the University of Hawaii didn’t follow the rule and picked a lower bidder. Sour grapes because his bid did not win, Sadowski wants the contract so badly, he is willing to go to great lengths to postpone the project. Auwe! That’s not right!

Just when I thought our student-athletes would finally be able to practice on a refurbished field, Sadowski is making sure it does not happen. He is selfish, immature, and a sore loser. Hopefully, the powers that be will rule against his appeal.

    Murf’s Take
“The two biggest names on the night were Favre and Colt Brennan. Since you’ll hear about Brett’s first night in New York everywhere else, I’ll focus on the man they call “Cool Breeze.” Brennan might not look exactly like your prototypical NFL quarterback, but he get results. As one writer put it “All he does is win games.”

So on his birthday Colt was asked to wait until the end of the game to see some action. The thinking was they wanted to see what he could do in a two-minute drill. Well, Brennan steps up in the face of a blitz and threads the needle. At the same time, rookie tight end Jason Goode beats Jets defensive back James Ihedigbo to the ball and turns upfield for an uncontested score. On a night when the team doesn’t have much to be happy about, the veterans were happy to see the young guns step up and make plays when it counted. So if that’s good enough for them (well, everyone but Rabach and his boredom), then it’s good enough for me.”

    JimmiJo’s Corner

“The Washington Redskins did not play well enough to win tonight. However, the Jets played well enough to lose and when Jets’ receiver Paul Raymond dropped a sure touchdown with seconds to play and kicker Mike Nugent struck the upright on the field goal attempt, they did just that.

The Redskins had a subpar performance until the end of the game when quarterback Colt Brennan and the 3rd string offense mounted an effective 2-minute drill that resulted in a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jason Goode. On 2nd and 14, Brennan hit Goode in the middle of the field on a stop pattern. The corner back James Ihedigbo, who had intercepted a Derrick Devine pass in the 2nd quarter, gambled and went for the pick again, trying to jump the route. With Ihedigbo jumping in front of Goode, the middle of the field was left open once Goode cught the ball, turned, and ran into the end zone for the Redskins’ first lead of the game. It would be the game winning score.”

    “Game Balls

    • Rock Cartwright – 90 yards on 6 carries
    • Colt Brennan – 4/5, 79 yards and 1 TD
    • Ryan Boschetti – Good pressure and batted balls
    • Alfred Fincher – 5 tackles and 1 assist to lead the team”

    HO BOY

Gov. Lingle, sum kine bradda Dennis Sadowski, hun? He no scared pull down Karen Nakamura, Carlton Ching, Lester Fukuda, John Cheung.

And his buddies on the State Contractor’s License Board: FM SCOTTY ANDERSON, JOE KINDRICH, TADY ARISUMI. What kind of process you guyz using? Make “advisory/rule” without telling da UH process makers of the new “advisory/rule.”

I saw this a coupla years ago at DLNR. The Appellate Court threw out the new “rule”.

But meanwhile, SCOTTY ANDERSON, JOE KINDRICH, TADY ARISUMI, you guyz gonna covah for your bradda DENNIS SADOWSKI against Warrior Nation? what would happened today if Sadowski was now tryin for renew his contractor’s license board position in light of his challenge? Don’t yu think the regular peeps would be editorially lynchin da edumacated idjet?

I like see Roy Ogawa get in dis one… Drag em all down, Dennis Sadowski. Day was all tryin fo help yu cuz yu wuz talkin da guud talk. now yo bad akshuns speakin, an i stay turnin up da volume full blasss!!!

rememba, da goal is to fix da field now. an for dat Mr. Sadowski, yu in da way! no akk!

    A-House (496):

Number one is what I would pick. Pull that offer now.

Why? ’cause if you don’t want to play for UH….we will offer to another player that wants too. Why wait and make UH looks desperate and holding on to false hope? Sure, UH and us would love for this local boy to stay home, but he already stated in black and white that he intends to move on, well UH should also before we lose out on another that can contribute.

I am not bitter that some choose to go away, more power to them that they have the chance to. I just don’t like how some of them come across. Yeah, they are young and might not have the tact to deal with something like this yet, but could he not have said “I was offered to stay at home, but I would want to see how I can do on the mainland and if it is not for me, I hope that UH and Hawai`i can welcome me back”

    Now how hard was that?

You remeber that Manti Te’o article a week or so ago talking aboout all his offers and stuff? Reading between the lines, IIRC, his father and him intended to “Market” Manti…that, in my mind, feels like hes not staying in Hawai`i, hes gone as well…he looking for an engineering/architecture college…that smells like Pac-10?..UH has no chance, sad to say.
