“We’re not in the redshirt business”

In his first Mountain West teleconference, UH head coach Norm Chow noted:

• The Warriors have not named a No. 1 quarterback from among David Graves, Jeremy Higgins and Ikaika Woolsey. “Nobody has really stepped up to take the job permanently,” said Chow, who will announce a depth chart this weekend.

• The coaches have implemented the new schemes for offense, defense and special teams during the first 12 practices. He said he wishes he had another 15 practices.

• Although the coaches have been stern in their teaching methods, the intent also is to give the players the confidence they are doing things the right way, Chow said.

• Chow said it has been an adjustment handling the non-coaching duties required of a head coach. “That’s what you bought into and that’s what you do,” he said. “You keep rolling.”

• Chow said players are recruited to compete without a waiting period. “We’re not in the redshirt business,” Chow said. “The chore is to put the best team forward now.” He said recruits are told to ‘prepare yourself to contribute now.”

Offensive lineman Levi Legay (back), fullback Jared Leaf (illness) and quarterback Justin Alo (wrist) will not participate in the final three practices of spring training.

Kudos to A-House  for creating the rock garden at the entrance of the UH athletic complex.

By the way, he did it for free.

  36. PIAA DS April 24, 2012 9:10 am

Good morning everyone, PIAA will be holding the first ever soccer combine for high school age boys and girls, including members of the class of 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, on May 24th from 3:30 – 6:00 pm at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex. PIAA has been hosting football combines since 2001, though this will be our first soccer specific combine

Athletes will be timed and tested on the following:

    Vertical Jump

    Broad Jump

    Flexibility

    Pro-Agility

    Kick Speed

    20M Reaction with Ball

    20M Run

    20M Run with Ball

    300 Yard Shuttle

Timing will be done by SPORT TESTING INC which utilizes the world’s most accurate testing, reactive and training equipment to evaluate athletes in sport-specific abilities on and off the field of play. They will also be timing our football combine on the 26th.

Athletes can register online now! The fee is $30, which includes a FREE website for their own use. They can upload video, photos, add their personal contact information and your contact information; their combine stats will automatically be uploaded to the page, and they may use it to email it out to college coaches. There are no additional fees for this service. All participants will also receive the Prodigy Performance Soccer shirt (from EastBay).

Additional information and registration on http://www.pacificathleticalliance.com

Kenny Patton is our combine director, and we sure could use a few good willing volunteers with iPads and iPhones for both the events – all results will be transmitted this way (yes, there’s an app for that! hahaa)

Help us spread the word so we can make this an annual event. Should you have any questions or comments, please let me know! Hope to see you there! Sorry so long, I’m just excited!

  37. HawaiiMongoose April 24, 2012 9:13 am

Coach Uperesa was on the radio this morning. If I can remember correctly he talked about 4 runningbacks. There is no real front runner and they all bring something to the table. They want to find a way for all to contribute.

Iosefa is the strong power back.

Lister is the most consistent back.

    Anguay is the quickest.

Gregory is big and fast and also a powerful runner.

Coach Demo likes all four so do not be surprised if they also end up on special teams. They want to put the best 11 on the field.

  59. wafan April 24, 2012 11:00 am

    Thank you to Mr. A-House!

Glad Mrs. A-House was there to supervise and oversee the operation. Someone had to crack the whip, point and sit in the shade with a cool drink in hand. Might as well be her . . . I would never dream of telling her what to or not to do!

I like breathing without mechanical assistance. HA!

  60. Old School Dave April 24, 2012 11:06 am

Heard from a relative in Utah that John L Smith’s sudden departure from Weber State to Arkansas has put the Wildcat program in disarray. Even Ron McBride who Smith succeeded is upset about this. Funny in that during his 4 months as WSU’s HC, Smith emphasized the importance of “loyalty” to the players. Gotta feel for the players at Weber State right now.

    Beautiful job A-House!!!

Please give my best to Mrs. A-House and Midori. Hope to see you all when football season rolls around.

  73. madeinhawaii April 24, 2012 11:57 am

    BIK,

A pretty well-informed blogger from Warrior Nation forum on Scout.com said the same regarding Graves and Higgins. He, too, is not convinced that Graves will or should be the starter next season. Graves has a propensity to throw into tight areas with greater potential for interceptions. Graves seems to have that gunslinger mentality as a QB and while that was a plus in the old RnS, it may not be in the Pro Style. Higgins has a nicer touch on his deep balls and had a year of learning the Pro-style under Dave Baldwin at Utah State.

  74. Old School Dave April 24, 2012 12:04 pm

John L. Smith signed 18 players during his stint as WSU’s head coach. Another reason why players who sign with a coach, who later bolts for another job, should be allowed to transfer without sitting out a year. Looks like Ron McBride may be asked to be Weber State interim HC for the 2012 season.

  75. Warrior Dave April 24, 2012 12:08 pm

    OSD,

Did Weber St. really think John L was there to stay? These guys are in it for the $$$$$$.

  76. oldtimer808 April 24, 2012 12:09 pm

Good afternoon…mahalo ST for all the information. It’s good to see people who give of themselves. Mahalo to A-House for his hard work and great attitude. Speaking of attitudes you gotta love Coach Chow’s comment about red shirts. I hope the student/athletes work hard after the spring practice is pau to be ready for fall camp. Aiya gotta go vote.

  77. oldtimer808 April 24, 2012 12:12 pm

By the way John L Smith showing his true colors again just as he did when he was at Michigan State. I recall that he had some negative comments dissing Hawaii. No problem because our Coach Chow is reaping all the good mana from the people for his great attitude.

  78. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 12:46 pm

Graves is still ahead. He just has to make plays.

  79. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 12:48 pm

Iosefa is, by the far, the best of the running backs.

But he’s been banged up, so look for a large rotation next year of Iosefa, Lister, Gregory, Lakalaka and Sterling Jackson. Jackson won’t be ready until July.

  80. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 12:50 pm

The surprises of the spring are Ben Clarke, Beau Yap, Bubba Poueu-Luna and Chris Gant.

  81. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 12:50 pm

I guess Jeremy Higgins should be thrown into the ‘surprise” group.

  87. Bigislandkurt April 24, 2012 1:50 pm

When was the last time UH had a lefty for a QB? Have we ever had a lefty for a QB? Higgins could be the first. Me likes leftys. But I like Graves too. QB controversy brewing? That would be a good thing right?

    BIK

  88. Bigislandkurt April 24, 2012 1:52 pm

I agree. Students should be able to transfer without having to sit out a year. Coaches have free reign to move as the please. Student athletes have greater restrictions.

    BIK

  89. homey ℞ April 24, 2012 1:55 pm

Happy birthday MIH…but I already wished you a pre-birthday wish. Consider this one a bonus. Sixty eh…hope to get there one day…not too far behind…in Galapagos tortoise years…

Was reading kama krabs post…bring a baseball glove to the t-gate. Good to play catch once in a while…especially since al’s son doesn’t show up at the lower t-gate anymore.

  90. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 1:55 pm

Kevin Gilbride and Kiran Kepoo are lefties. I can’t remember if Jared Fliint is left-handed.

  91. madeinhawaii April 24, 2012 1:56 pm

Our last lefty got into a moped accident as a redshirt, I believe. Ended his football career. We were all wondering if the strong side tackle switched sides when a lefty goes in.

  92. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 2:02 pm

They don’t tailor the plays. Higgins does a lot of rollouts to the right.

  93. madeinhawaii April 24, 2012 2:16 pm

Interesting… lefty that plays like a right-hander. Makes it simpler to adapt to the new QB, I suppose.

  94. homey ℞ April 24, 2012 2:26 pm

  95. tommui April 24, 2012 2:31 pm

Is AL ready to pounce in at 100?

  96. lava April 24, 2012 2:31 pm

    They should tailor plays.

I think when a team is more broad-minded in terms of experimenting with and implementing different schemes (think Boise State), you find all sorts of pleasant surprises in terms of personnel fitting nicely for a particular scheme.

If we used more schemes, we had more guys contributing.

Iosefa may appear to be the best back, but that really depends on the play. If the play is to pitch for a run wide, Gregory should be the guy.

  97. lava April 24, 2012 2:31 pm

Can I beat Al to the punch?

  98. lava April 24, 2012 2:31 pm

Yep, John Lucifer Smith has struck again… sad but true, left the Weber Boys hanging. Reporters pounding on the front door and he slips out the back door to catch a flight; what a stand up guy, and i quote from his Weber news conference when hired, ‘…and loyalty means everything, that’s why i’m here, i played here, graduated from here and now get to coach here…’

what a crock, and HE approached Arkansas selling why he’s the best choice…… good riddance!

Good job A-House, maybe I could hire you for 1 of our 22 hotels to give us a ‘A House Make Over’???? just kidding my friend.

i guess money talks and kaka walks, as evidenced by the John L. Smith saga at Weber State, talks out of both sides of his mouth, pretty sad if you ask me, but such is football. thought coaching was an honorable profession, how mistaken…

we still got a good chunk of 808 boys there, Tytan Timoteo, Jiniki Timoteo, shaden Kihano, Kela Marciel, Mike Hoke, Adam Sagapolutele-White, Malon Fiso, Vetison Sanui, Cee Jay Santo, Chase Nakamura, Ryan Eastman….. they’ll survive, but there is even Coach Craig Stutzmann up there also

it’ll all settle down, be nice to have Ron McBride back, and he’d do it in a heartbeat, but word on the street is they’re hiring from within…..and that is not too good.

    GO WARRIORS

He’s a piece of kukai, feel sorry for the kids he recruited, and the seniors that are there, and the guys he kicked off the team because they didn’t ‘fit’ his profile. lot of people upset in Ogden, but the boys will survive and despite this they will do well and they WILL represent the 808 with pride.

i guess he didn’t learn that money isn’t everything….. and the fact is he can never return to Ogden or his alma mater ever…… not after this.

mahalo for the support, and i’m really excited for the Warriors…..’ballers play and talkers talk’

  108. Bulla April 24, 2012 3:03 pm

    Homey,

i am now practicing with my left hand, seems off, almost like opposite of the right… hmmm

  109. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 3:18 pm

That’s fast healing. Justin Alo is out here.

  110. ai-eee-soos April 24, 2012 3:19 pm

  111. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 3:21 pm

Dee Maggitt has entered the competition at punt returner.

  112. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 3:32 pm

They had a dance off. Nobody won. “Nobody knows how to do the (Electric) Slide,” Chow yelled.

  113. sean (aka pcwarrior) April 24, 2012 3:33 pm

    Bulla,

    @111

Well I think it’s better he leave now rather than in later because Mr. Smith has shown has would be players his true colors. Green + Yellow = Brown. $$$ + no intergrity = KUKAI!!

I think we all read yesterday about TRUE coaches and how they can influence kids to remain repectful and have integrity in everything they do.

Koakane and Kama Krab…. I guess its not just the players of today, looks like some coaches can be PRIMADONA’s (sp) too.

    back to lurking

    A-House is an artist.

  115. Haleakala April 24, 2012 3:37 pm

    Bulla:

John L Smith’s character reminds me of the all the kukai left behind by Bobby Petrino of Arkansas. Oh, JLS is also going to Arkansas?

  116. Ipu Man April 24, 2012 3:40 pm

    Yahoo sports quotes Smith:

“He said the decision to leave his alma mater after five months without coaching a game required a similar leap of faith, one made easier by his familiarity with the Razorbacks’ coaching staff and players.

“I guess I’ve always kind of been that way, to a degree,” Smith said. “If there’s a door open, walk through it. If there’s a window, jump out of it. It’s like my wife (Diana) said, ‘This is just another one of your adventures.'”

  117. wafan April 24, 2012 3:41 pm

    So much for Smith’s integrity.

  118. Bigislandkurt April 24, 2012 3:50 pm

Karma is a b. That is why John L. will fail at Arkansas. But in the end, he wins the money game. 800k is a prime nest egg for a coach in his 60’s.

    BIK

  119. Bigislandkurt April 24, 2012 3:52 pm

Gilbride and Kepo’o…..sadly, were never relevant.

And yes, leftys are special people.

    (disclaimer: I am not a lefty) 🙂

  120. d1shima April 24, 2012 4:16 pm

    Haleakala,

    Birds of a feather, man.

Petrino was on Smith’s staff at one time then hired Smith to be an Assistant at Arkansas up until last year.

As soon as the kukai hit the fan for Petrino, Smith was on it with the UA AD.

How do you spell “loyalty”? Certainly not with a Smith!

  121. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 4:25 pm

Higgins is with the No. 1s

  122. A-House April 24, 2012 4:25 pm

    ST:

Mahalo for the recognition, but it was not intended to be as such. Just helping Jim D with making the lower campus something to be proud of.

and thanks to all the fellow bloggers for their kind words – and lava is correct – Mrs A-House was with me, busting behind, to complete the “garden” – working wafan, working – no supervisor role on this project!

  123. d1shima April 24, 2012 4:29 pm

Higgins is with the No. 1s

    Wow

  124. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 4:33 pm

Graves is back with the 1s.

  125. d1shima April 24, 2012 4:40 pm

Graves is back with the 1s.

    Wowewow

  126. HawaiiMongoose April 24, 2012 4:45 pm

If Smith had been approached by Arkansas, his leaving would be a bit more defensible. But for him to actively seek Petrino’s job, after making the commitment he did to Weber State and vice versa, is utterly hypocritical. And that’s on top of being a poor loser and whiner which we already knew.

  127. d1shima April 24, 2012 4:48 pm

    BaseB 🙂 ws

  128. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 5:05 pm

  129. Da Punchbowl Kid April 24, 2012 5:05 pm

Love the competition at QB. The best man will win, and will enjoy the tutelage of one of the best QB coaches in the business. Very exciting times!

    Thanks for the updates, Stephen.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  134. madeinhawaii April 24, 2012 5:36 pm

Yikes.. Cravens hurt? badly enough for an ambulance.. hoo boy. I hope it’s not as bad as it sounds.. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery from whatever it might be.

  135. Haleakala April 24, 2012 5:42 pm

That news about Cravens kind of sours the day. Hopefully he will be alright soon.

  136. madeinhawaii April 24, 2012 5:43 pm

    Good evening everyone!

Leaving Hilo in a few minutes. Kona tomorrow. Checked out the karaoke last might. I see they have The Green Leaves of Summer… Hmmm, maybe . Wish the Tsai-ko Tsingers were here!

Comedian Tim Kaminski is still aboard from last trip.

What a character! Some resemblance to Bulla. 😆

Will peek in tomorrow when in (free) cell range and I finish eating 🙄

The No. 14/17 University of Hawai’i softball team (37-5, 9-2 WAC) battles first place Fresno State (31-17, 11-2 WAC) in a pivotal three-game Western Athletic Conference series this week at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The series opens with a single game on Friday, April 27 at 6:00 p.m. with Senior Night festivities following Saturday’s doubleheader which starts at 2:00 p.m. on April 28.

  139. Derek April 24, 2012 7:20 pm

Jared Flint is right handed. Raphael Cherry was a lefty. Great athlete. Other terrific left handed QBs are, Steve Young, Ken Stabler, Kellen Moore, Michael Vick, Mark Brunell, and Tim Tebow.

  140. gmahoney April 24, 2012 7:20 pm

KK, Slugger, DPK, sorry, was only in town for an hour or so. Stopped by Da Big Kahuna to bring back lunch for the office. Maybe next time. Or if something happening at lunchowa on da Westside, let me know. You know, Tell Ma’s, etc.

  141. Bryson April 24, 2012 7:28 pm

    Wasn’t Shawn Withy-Allen Left Handed?

  142. Ipu Man April 24, 2012 7:38 pm

Speaking of Raphael Cherry, here is a good HSB link recalling his

life of ups and down, but mostly up…He played better than Randal

Cunningham but was not drafted to be a qb…for example.

    Howzit Everybody,

And a special howzit to you Homes. Would love to come by the T-Gate for throw ball. Only problem is I stay running from coaching on Saturday’s during the season so might be little hard. But if I get one chance, I will definitely stop by.

  145. BG April 24, 2012 8:46 pm

Can’t miss out on wishing MIH and Maggie a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

  146. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2012 8:50 pm

Chow said Cravens has a dislocated shoulder.

  147. d1shima April 24, 2012 8:52 pm

    Ouch!

Hope it heals up well and quickly

  148. kev-1 April 24, 2012 9:05 pm

Ouch! Dislocated shoulder? What’s the heal time on something like that?

  149. kev-1 April 24, 2012 9:05 pm

Is it true that once you dislocate something, it happens on a recurring basis?

  150. kev-1 April 24, 2012 9:07 pm

Bulla . . . thanks for posting the list of local boys on the Weber St. squad. I knew had some, but never realized so many. It must be nice for them to have each other as support.

  151. madeinhawaii April 24, 2012 9:11 pm

Again, thanks for all the birthday wishes! A bit under the weather, but having a good day.. Hope everyone else is having a great time. I’m unhappy about Craven’s but he’s young and there’s ample time for healing between now and Summer Camp.. hope that arm heals up stronger than ever.

    GO WARRIORS!

  152. madeinhawaii April 24, 2012 9:20 pm

I think, once you dislocate a shoulder.. it tends to pop out rather regularly. Got to gradually work the surrounding muscles and strengthen those. Painful when it happens, but the pain subsides quickly once the arm is reset. Hopefully they were able to reset the arm without surgery and that there were no other complications like minor fractures, arterial or nerve damage. In any event, he’ll have to wear a sling for a spell and not lift weights with that arm.. He’s young and strong, I feel confident that he’ll come back with a vengeance!! That’s my birthday wish!!.. healthy Warriors for next season!! Cheee hoooo!!

    Go Siaki! GO WARRIORS!

  153. Slugger April 24, 2012 9:50 pm

    Prayers for Siaki.

Happy birthday, MIH and Maggie! Celebrated my co-worker’s birthday today by taking her to lunch at Wah Kung.

    Night all! Take care.

  154. bigislandkurt April 24, 2012 10:00 pm

Ralph Cherry was a lefty. Man, I knew that too. Thanks for the reminder. And let us not forget how much of a baller he was. Those were some very exciting UH times. Think he got drafted as a DB to the redskins after yeh? This was during the day when black QB’s were far and none. Doug Williams might have been the only one.
