Warriors land d-tackle; might get 5-star DB

Defensive tackle David Moala told The Warrior Beat he has accepted a UH scholarship offer and will join the Warriors in the summer of 2013.

UnknownMoala, who is 6 feet 1 and 318 pounds, redshirted as a freshman at Arizona State in 2011. This past January, he was dismissed for what was termed a violation of “team standards.” He will play for Mt. San Antonio College in the fall, complete work on an associate’s degree next spring and then report to the Warriors.

As a Serra High senior, he was rated as the nation’s 97th-best defensive tackle. SuperPrep rated Moala as California’s No. 110 overall player.

Moala turned down offers from Miami, Colorado, Colorado State, San Diego State and San Jose State to sign with ASU. After leaving the Sun Devils, he received interest from USC and LSU. But Moala said he wanted to play for UH head coach Norm Chow. They have known each other since Moala’s sophomore year at Serra.

Demar Dorsey, a former 5-star prospect, has contacted UH and Β is hoping to become a Warrior, according to his friend, UH cornerback Mike Edwards.

Dorsey had signed with Michigan in 2010, but did not meet the eligibility requirements. He hopes to earn an associate degree this summer.

This is not a done deal.

But if Dorsey were to end up in Manoa this summer, he would have three years to play three seasons.

Re-adjust your schedule.

The UH-BYU game in Provo has been moved to Friday, Sept. 28. It will be shown on ESPN.

Chow was part of a UH group that toured Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam yesterday. The Warriors are exploring the possibility of holding part of their training camp on the base.

UH needs to have BG or Sailor Blue negotiate the training-camp deal.

  5. al May 16, 2012 12:31 am

it would be a great educational experience having camp on the pearl harbor/hickam grounds.

imagine if they could broker living accomodations on an air craft carrier…wow.

A year too late to book the Mighty Mo.

  7. chawan_cut May 16, 2012 12:59 am

would they stay in the on base barracks too?

  8. chawan_cut May 16, 2012 1:01 am

i had suggested to Mr. Donovan that UH set up a partnership with the USS Hawai’i, the new submarine at Pearl Harbor. Let UH teams visit the boat and give free tickets to the sailors for games. Give each group insight into variations of teamwork and sacrifice for their own “teams”. UH could also donate various UH memorabilia to the boat as well.

    great ideas st and c_c.

you guys should team up and run the marketing dept for the athletic program. it seems that the current staff is always a day late and a dollar short.

the first time i walked the hallowed grounds of pearl harbor and hickam afb i felt a sense of responsibility to honor our nation and the men and women died protecting it.

it felt like that high school team that tread the grounds of gettysburg.

I do not understand why there are no news on Women’s basketball. Is this because the new coach is finding out just how tough it is to recruit for UH? Seems like UH has it tough for all sports, except for women’s volleyball and softball.

Old Time UH Rainbow fan (70 years of following our Rainbows and don’t tell me they changed their name to Warriors. The only Warriors I think of are the Warriors of Kamehameha and the Hawaiian Warriors of the long-gone Pacific Coast League).

    Happy Hump Day.

Welcome to the Warrior ohana, Mr. Moala.

B$U brings nothing of value to the BWC. The only sport they are good in is football (and possibly rodeo, but ainokea). They should be made to pay travel subsidies if they want in. How long does it take to get to Boise from SFO or LAX? Can’t bus it, gotta fly.

If UH wants to hold summer camp practices at Richardson field, BG and Sailor Blue are the men that can make that deal happen!

Good to see players choose to play in Hawaii. Especially over big time program offers.

Allot of “Teaming Up” going on in the blog today. Is there such a thing as, “Team Down?”

  36. whitey May 16, 2012 6:29 am

jm, i with you on travel subsidies for the BWC. If bsu wants in, they should pay travel subsidies for all sports to boise including hawaii. they get plenty extra money whereas the BWC is having money problems.

    Good Morning Mates!

Always good to hear a poly mainland athlete wanting to play for Hawaii.

So ST, Out of hs this kat was rated #98 in the nation, Cali. #110 overall, redshirted last year as a freshman, was excused this past January from ASU, and still had offers from LSU and USC? Hmmm…..that’s kinda odd an strange. To be rated that far down on the charts, and yet be excused from the team, imo doesn’t fit into the puzzle. Congratulations though, and welcome to Warrior Nation!

Nice pic on AB. He needs a hair cut, lol.

Ex 5-star Michigan DB recruit Demar Dorsey will play for Hawaii this yr. A source confirmed he’ll arrive at UH in late July. Hawaii will have to petition NCAA for Demar Dorsey to be eligible this fall. The 6-2, 195-lb DB would have 3 yrs of eligbty.

  49. BayAreaWarrior May 16, 2012 7:59 am

Hey, ST… Can you confirm whether or not former Florida & Michigan commit Demar Dorsey is coming to play at UH in 2012? He was a 4 or 5 star recruit (depending on the ratings service) coming out of HS, had some legal and academic issues in his past, but apparently dominated at Grand Rapids CC in MI this season. Plays safety, rumors are he’ll be in Hawaii come July?

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sportspremium/sportsnewspremium/20120516_uh_ranks_low_in_athletic_department_subsidies.html?id=151677155

Ferd paints a negative connotation by insinuating UH’s lack of state subsidies somehow makes us inferior to our soon be colleagues in the MWC. UH ranked next to last. (just above Fresno)

I took a different look at it. As I went up the list I wondered how much more success did state subsidies bring to each program. Not much. Fresno won a national title (baseball) with the least amount. With what we have, we’re doing pretty good ourselves. But we could always be better.

I’d love to see our state dependence go even lower. Would be awesome to see UH win national titles on ZERO state subsidies!

  57. Bryson May 16, 2012 8:37 am

Man we are gonna have a very High Caliber Secondary if all these Recruits end up at Manoa…The USC game could be very interesting…

  58. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 8:39 am

    OK, here’s the deal:

    Dorsey has contacted UH.

He has told people he will come to UH in July.

But it is not a done deal. UH still is in the vetting process.

  59. letsgowarriors May 16, 2012 8:41 am

    wat bout darren myles?

  60. Chawamsuhi May 16, 2012 8:53 am

Dorsey should have three years to play since he only played one year at GRCC. He’s the cousin of Dernard Robinson, Michigan QB. Dorsey ran a 4.25 – 40! Now that flying!

  61. SteveM May 16, 2012 9:08 am

    Happy Birthday Mo808 !!!

  63. A-joe May 16, 2012 9:12 am

Very impressive physical transfers. They do come with spotted backgrounds.

The bottom line is- do they possess the self discipline, the character and fortitude to man up and play under the “Chow Regime?”

Will they play for Hawaii? Or themselves. Chow will find out.

  64. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 9:27 am

Same deal with Myles, which means, not a done deal, either.

    There is a vetting process.

UH also has to decide on two other possible transfers.

  65. letsgowarriors May 16, 2012 9:33 am

    nice. thanks.

  66. al May 16, 2012 9:36 am

oh, i am sure that chow will lay the law down from the outstart to any transfers. i am sure that once he looks them in the eye he will know if they are legit or all shibai.

  67. HawaiiMongoose May 16, 2012 9:37 am

I’m glad the coaching staff is setting and enforcing standards for the transfer candidates to meet. We need kids who will get it done in the classroom and who will conduct themselves in a manner that represents the program well both on and off the field. Anyone who can’t do those things doesn’t belong in Manoa regardless of how good his 40 time is.

  68. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 9:41 am

There are a lot of factors like available scholarships and availability. UH does not want to tie up too many scholarships to players who have to redshirt this season.

  69. letsgowarriors May 16, 2012 9:43 am

yeah id assume Myles doesnt have to redshirt. looks like he played in 2010 at Hutchinson, but didnt play anywhere in 2011.

    Happy birthday, Mo808!

Looks like someone will be wearing a new nickname with that jersey… “Five-0!” Book ’em, AB!

  72. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 9:49 am

Myles would be a two for two.

Again, it is his intention to come to UH. But he has some things to do, and UH has some things it wants to review.

    Nothing is a done deal.

    Yet.

  73. cheepono May 16, 2012 9:49 am

wow 2 more transfers other than dorsey and myles?! awesome.

  74. letsgowarriors May 16, 2012 9:50 am

    yea got it.

  75. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 9:51 am

    Cheepono:

Two more possible transfers who have expressed a strong interest in Hawaii. But one is not at a need position, although he is exiting a top-10 program.

  76. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 9:56 am

    It’s Hawaii.

It’s a team coached by a guy who coached four Heisman Trophy winners.

My feeling is, if you get an offer from UH, jump on it. As a scout once said: Better get a ticket before the seats fill up.

  77. rage777 May 16, 2012 10:00 am

Saw this article on the ’92 team. Brought back some good memories.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/20-years-ago-hawaii-warriors-earn-first-wac-162200438–ncaaf.html

  78. Bugaz May 16, 2012 10:12 am

I agree 100% with post 81. The interest level of playing for Hawaii, and coach Chow, has gone through the roof.

  79. HawaiiMongoose May 16, 2012 10:24 am

I think it helps that UH will be playing in the MWC rather than the WAC. I just hope the MWC can hold onto the teams it has left.

  80. HawaiiWarriors2 May 16, 2012 10:25 am

who’s the other two possible transfers??

  81. WarriorNY May 16, 2012 10:37 am

Wow, multiple reports are flooding in about Dorsey… Another Huge get for the Warriors if he can qualify… So wait, our starting secondary could have Mike Edwards, JT Turner, Dorsey and John Hardy Tuiliau? Under the tutelage of one of the best secondary minds in the country in Kaumeyer?!?!?? If all goes well this season, we could realistically have one of, if not the, top secondaries in the country… WOW is all I have to say… I can’t wait for the season… I can’t wait for 2013 even more!!

  82. PONO May 16, 2012 10:42 am

Secondary “could” be loaded with former 3-5 star talents. If they still possess those talents it could be a good year. If we can play man on the outside it will allow us to commit more guys in the box and hopefully pressure the QB more.

  83. Derek May 16, 2012 10:49 am

It begs the question, what violation did Moala commit at ASU of team standards? Very vague.

Did the recruit DB Kagawa from the big island get a scholarship offer from UH?

  84. Shoko May 16, 2012 10:51 am

Welcome to the University of Second Chances. πŸ˜‰

Of course, when Chow says second chances, there will be no third or fourth. In other words, second chances are actuall last chances.

  85. mauiwarrior May 16, 2012 11:05 am

Dorsey is a beast, hopefully he comes to UH, gotta check his attitude………don’t get too excited back in his senior year, he was commited to Florida then committed to FSU then to Michigan then Louisville, guess he had a hard time qualifying, but if he comes here our secondary will be the best it has been ever! Lightning in a bottle!

  86. WarriorNY May 16, 2012 11:08 am

I also forgot about Darren Myles… Kudos to Mike Edwards who must have done some talking to these guys. He already knew Myles, turner and Dorsey right?

  87. 808Bowler May 16, 2012 11:22 am

Morning. Awesome news bout possible new warriors. Coach Chow keep bringing them in!!!!

  88. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 11:34 am

Edwards is the middle man in all of this.

Credit also goes to Tony Tuioti, who has been on those guys for a couple of years.

    But, again, still premature.

This is far, far from done deals.

  89. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 11:35 am

    Derek:

I think he got into a fight.

It actually was an amicable parting. He spoke highly of Todd Graham.

  90. A-House May 16, 2012 12:02 pm

    ST:

your statement about “jumping on it” – wonder if Hawaii players for 2013 and beyond have been keeping track of what is being offered, who is moving back to play for the Warriors, how the “outer islands” are becoming an impact for the limited numer of scholarships available, etc.

those 3 or 4 current “local” juniors verbal commits must be laying back, smiling, and thinking, “wow, I made the right decision” to stay home – I get to be teammates with some very high profile former high school players who are willing to make that huge jomp over thousands of miles just to be a Warrior”.

coin flip and we see top talent fleeing the state for “glorious” days at some BCS school – go talk to those who decided to return and learn from their experiences – take the time to seek information – let there be “no regrets”.

  91. whitey May 16, 2012 12:12 pm

yes, da warriors get more interesting as the days go by. So far, both sides of the line are getting help (big time). I can see why each player had to see Coach Chow before they went on summer break. He probably didn’t beat around the bush, so each returning warrior knows what to expect. Go Warriors!!!

  92. whitey May 16, 2012 12:16 pm

colonel, imho, da warriors have extended a lot of offers for 2013 and beyond and those who commit early will get their scholie, but at the same time da warriors may recind some as more commit.

  93. d1shima May 16, 2012 12:33 pm

but not able due to grades.

  95. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 12:54 pm

And, once again I must caution, Dorsey and Myles are far, far from being done deals. I can’t emphasize that enough.

  96. Bugaz May 16, 2012 1:10 pm

With recruiting nothing’s a done deal until they stepping on the that Warrior green turf, but it’s super exciting hearing about high profile players wanting to be Warriors. Exciting times!!!

  97. Da Punchbowl Kid May 16, 2012 1:44 pm

It’ll be interesting to see what the Warriors look like and and who’s on the roster come fall camp. Gotta admit, we’re gettin’ some interesting feelers/commits.

Used to enjoy looking in on fall camp practices, but the idea of keeping the team under wraps before SC will make the unveiling of the 2012 Warriors all the more exciting.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  98. A-House May 16, 2012 1:47 pm

the “holy grail” according to treasure hunters is the “arc”, but if Dr Jones is correct it is stored in some god-forsaken warehouse owned/operated by the Fed Govt.

according to the Da Vinci Code, it is the last living relative of Jesus.

but, for al, it is that certain Warrior football player who will take UH to levels beyond the beyond – sure hope it happens in my life time!

  99. A-House May 16, 2012 1:49 pm

So far, I heard one final score for UH vs USC – it is USC 45 and UH 10.

geez, sounds like Florida vs UH and Georgia vs UH.

nope, I will take the points and go UH.

  100. 808Bowler May 16, 2012 1:51 pm

Not done deals yes but just to hear the Warriors getting intrest and publicity from high star recruits is awsome. Maybe Hawaii can become redemption u. I.e Colt, Devonne.

  101. gigi-hawaii May 16, 2012 2:09 pm

    Hi ST,

sorry I didn’t recognize your voice. The TV was making a racket (Celtics/76ers game). Anyway, I hope you do write an article about Dr Allen Anae and his connections to Kahuku (QB), BYU (tight end under Norm Chow), Uperesa, and Lolotai.

That would be a fantastic story. Plus I would get to know more about him, since I won’t be seeing him again unless I have another surgery. Lol.

  106. gigi-hawaii May 16, 2012 2:43 pm

    Hi Tom,

thanks for your info about cruises. Don’t know which one I’ll go on, yet.

  107. mctruck May 16, 2012 2:46 pm

Aloha, my friend….Gigi. Guess coach Chow and company got you all excited, yeah?!

Good to c u back lady.

  108. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 2:49 pm

If they can get them into school, it will be huge. There’s cautious optimism because they were burned recently by a couple of players who insisted they would be eligible. They weren’t.

  109. gigi-hawaii May 16, 2012 2:50 pm

    Hi Mctruck,

Yes, ST told me to drop by and that he deleted a lot of people over the past year. Pretty quiet here.

  110. Da Punchbowl Kid May 16, 2012 2:50 pm

  116. Wes'side Warrior May 16, 2012 3:45 pm

    Welcome back, Gigi!!!

Wafan… less than a week before our kids start their summer vacation. Can’t wait!

Miss the state updates that Cap/WDoc used to bring us. But good to see more and more names/people returning!

  117. Ipu Man May 16, 2012 3:45 pm

    Gigi is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Here’s here’s the Gigi song

  118. jm2375 May 16, 2012 3:46 pm

awwww, wafan. Graduations start this weekend for public schools here. πŸ˜€

  119. jm2375 May 16, 2012 3:48 pm

Wes’side – Screecher finishes next week too. Tomorrow is her IB Spanish exam. Hope she passes so she won’t have to take a foreign language in college (or at least skip the first year). πŸ˜€

  120. Wes'side Warrior May 16, 2012 3:58 pm

JM… my son had Spanish, but didn’t care for it. He’s done a few years of French, and now has a year of Latin under his belt also. He wishes they offered Japanese here, but will stick with another year of Latin. If his electives don’t work out next year, (budget cuts, teacher reassignments, etc.), he’ll do another year of French too. Only needs a couple of core classes to graduate. So, everything else is basically free for him to schedule what he wants. Trying to keep his schedule challenging, since he still has college to look forward to. Can’t totally cruise his Senior year!

Best wishes to Screecher on her exam, and everything else that accompanies the end of year activities.

Sorry, Gigi… you might not recognize me as “Wes’side”. I was the Michigan Warrior, prior to us moving to Georgia last summer.

  121. jm2375 May 16, 2012 4:07 pm

WW – although Screecher only has a few classes she needs to graduate, she’s still gonna challenge herself with AP and IB classes next year. Impressive, but not as impressive as the kids who have elected to do the full IB diploma program, such as myki’s granddaughter.

BTW, she did a search on a website to come up with possible colleges to look at. Guess what school made the first cut? Fresno! I saw that on the list and told her in no uncertain terms to take it off the list IMMEDIATELY. She only follows men’s vb, so she doesn’t quite understand why I don’t like Fresno. 😈 I had to tell her it was because it was in the middle of nowhere…

  122. RedZone May 16, 2012 4:09 pm

what da is going on? now it seems like everyone wants to come to Hawaii. fine by me.

    jm2375 #130

Admittedly it has been sometime since I been to Fresno, but I remember the main drag was one pizza joint after another with beer joints in between.

I recall sitting next to a person from Fresno on the airplane and he mentioned it gets up to 130 degrees. I told him that he could always jump into a swimming pool. He said that when the weather hits about 130, the pool water gets up to about 110-115.

    Tell your daughter forget it!

  128. 3-Prong May 16, 2012 4:55 pm

#113 thanks for the video. This kid seems like he has some real talent. I think he needs to temper the showboating a little though. After qualifying, he will need to show that the mistakes in judgement are behind him. Sky would be the limit after that.

  129. Shoko May 16, 2012 4:56 pm

Not to get into an argument over semantics, but if Edwards said that Dorsey is “hoping to become a Warrior”, it almost sounds to me that he isn’t sure that UH wants him. If you’re a five-star recruit, shouldn’t it be the other way around? Meaning, the schools that are interested should be the one’s “hoping” that he accepts an offer.

Uh, or maybe I just read to much into it. Nevermind den. Carry on, Warrior fans.

  130. Shoko May 16, 2012 5:04 pm

Okay, this story is somewhat misleading. According to CBS college football writer Bruce Feldman, Dorsey has agreed to join the Warrior football program. Guess he can say one thing, but until he makes it official its just heresay. Right?

dang, we getting some really great press. good job coaches. good job good job.

  132. expat May 16, 2012 5:32 pm

Even if Dorsey doesn’t end up being a warrior it’s a win because of the chatter that it has generated. That kind of publicity is gold.

  133. d1shima May 16, 2012 5:33 pm

    Welcome back gigi.

  134. d1shima May 16, 2012 5:34 pm

    WarriorNY,

That is an interesting video….particularly at the end.

  135. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 5:41 pm

The process is going well, but they’re still in the process part. That’s what I’ve been told by several sources. It it all works, academically and such, UH is going to have a great secondary.

  136. wafan May 16, 2012 5:46 pm

Hard to argue with hard work and luck.

  137. PONO May 16, 2012 6:03 pm

    Cheers to Gigi!

  138. Stephen Tsai May 16, 2012 6:07 pm

    Gigi:

I didn’t cut anyone. People cut themselves.

There was a guy who kept sending e-mails of complaint about the blog to our paper. We all decided: Enough with this guy.

    And poof.

Of course, one of his neighbors sent me some really disturbing information about him. Geesh. Didn’t need to read that.

  139. BigHiloFan2 May 16, 2012 6:26 pm

    ST

i’ll give you a smile if you give me da low down.
