Warriors get WR transfer

The obstacles have been cleared, and receiver Charles Clay is set to transfer from SMU to UH.

“He’s a good player,” SMU coach June Jones said.

As a second-year freshman in 2010, Clay played in 12 games for SMU, mostly on special teams. Jones said he was told finances factored partly in Clay’s decision. The non-resident fee for tuition, school fees, room and board is $52,645 per year. Clay was a walk-on.

Clay’s family is looking into a special rule that does not require certain walk-ons to have to sit out season after transferring. (That was the case last year when receiver Terence Bell transferred from Nevada to UH.) If approved, Clay would have three years to play three seasons. If not, he would have to redshirt this year, then have two years of eligibility remaining.

Clay, who is 5-10 and 186, was named to the BIIF’s 2008 first team as a Hilo High senior.

    According to a report:

All-time wrestling great Randy “Macho Man” Savage died in a Florida car wreck Friday after suffering a heart attack behind the wheel, according to TMZ.com.

The 58-year-old Savage, a one-time minor league baseball player who helped catapult Vince McMahon’s WWF into a huge success during the mid-’80s, was killed in Tampa, said his brother, fellow ex-grappler Lanny Poffo.

The car veered out of control about 10 a.m. after Savage’s heart attack, Poffo told TMZ.

Savage used his rippling physique and trade cry of “Oooooh yeaaaaah!” to become one of the wrestling world’s biggest draws, teaming with Hulk Hogan at one point before their “partnership” went south.

Savage, in addition to his time with the WWF, wrestled for Ted Turner’s WCW before retiring in 1999.

He made a cameo appearance in the box office hit “Spider-Man,” but kept a relatively low profile after leaving the ring.

He had just celebrated his first anniversary with his new wife, Lynn. A previous Savage wife, wrestling manager Elizabeth Heulette, died in 2003 from a lethal combination of drugs and booze.

  20. Garret May 20, 2011 7:54 am

Since Clay has a redshirt year available, he’s probably be better off using it even if he doesn’t get that special transfer rule that will allow him to avoid sitting out. He might be able to contribute on special teams this season, but he’d have a better chance to get a shot at receiver if he redshirted.

Even though Clay has been in a similar system, he didn’t play much in their offense so I am guessing that he served on the scout team. UH’s system is not exactly the same as SMU’s either, so he will need to learn the offense.

The other reason why it might benefit Clay to sit out is that he’ll be able to get in sync with the younger QBs. This is the last season for Moniz, so if Clay gets some chemistry with Graves/Shutter/etc. then he might have a better shot to contribute at receiver in the future.

Of course, walk-ons probably would rather play right away, since their only chance to earn a scholarship is to contribute on the field…and Clay can probably do that right away on special teams. An extra season for a walk-on is an extra year of paying their own way.

  21. papajoe2 May 20, 2011 7:59 am

Thanks, ST. Sad that the older I get, I see more and more people from my past, passing on.

  22. Stephen Tsai May 20, 2011 8:00 am

    Garret:

My bad for not being clear on it, but Clay redshirted as a true freshman in 2009, then played in 12 games as a second-year freshman in 2010.

  23. mctruck May 20, 2011 8:06 am

A full-scholarship is very precious indeed, so I would guess that UH’s coaches would be reviewing the situation very closely before bestowing a scholarship on any athlete in question.

I think young Clay is very lucky, coach Jones has those connections with UH.

  24. Buffoman May 20, 2011 8:09 am

If Macho man went to Kalakaua Inter, wonder if he wrestled “The Rock” who went to Washington Inter.

  25. mctruck May 20, 2011 8:11 am

With so many wr’s now in UH’s stable….just wonder how young Clay would stackup with the talent on UH’s roster??

  26. mctruck May 20, 2011 8:13 am

    Happy birthday, young D. Tsai.

Condolences to the Savage family, PEACE.

  31. Garret May 20, 2011 8:55 am

    ST,

so does that mean that Clay would have 3 years to play 3 seasons if he gets that waiver to play right after transferring? And if not then he would sit out 2011 and have 2 years to play 2 seasons after that?

Randall Poffo aka Macho Man Randy Savage was without a doubt the BEST all-around performer in the late 80’s.

When Hulk Hogan was nothing more than a figure-head for Vince McMahon’s creativity in driving the WWE machine, Macho Man could actually perform in the ring, had charisma, and when he’d speak, he actually had something to say. He was WAAAYYYY ahead of his time.

Who’s going to forget Macho Man vs Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat at Wrestlemania III in front of over 93,000 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome???

  56. Derek May 20, 2011 10:21 am

Per the MSN website, UH was voted the #14 best college football helmet in the country.

#1 Michigan, #2 USC. Shockingly, Notre Dame was #5 as I don’t think it’s anything special as it is so plain. They showed the top 20 best helmets. Others in the top 20 that I can memorize are Colorado, Clemson, Florida St., Miami, BYU, and Georgia. No WAC or Mountain West teams are in there. Oh, Arizona, LSU, Alabama, West Virginia, and Penn St. are in there.

Look good, feel good, play good! Recruiting prospects like to play where they have nice uniforms and equipment. Notice all of the teams have great football traditions. I think UH is on to something. It really is a credit to June Jones because he was the one who wanted to change the look of the team when he took over. To say the least, the H logo and the tapa design is a merchanding bonanza.

  64. Garret May 20, 2011 11:10 am

    ST,

This is what I’m confused about:

If approved, Clay would have three years to play two seasons. If not, he would have to redshirt this year, then have two years of eligibility remaining.

Should the word in bold be changed to “three”?

  65. Stephen Tsai May 20, 2011 11:22 am

    Thanks, Garret.

It should be three. I mistyped.

  66. warriorsun May 20, 2011 11:34 am

If Clay redshirted and played one year at SMU as stated–he has 3 to play three. period.

Terrance Bell was not on equal footing…@ Nevada, Bell DNP in 2009, so he could play immediately once he transfered to Hawaii the following season.

Clay played last year @ SMU and should redshirt under normal transfer rules.

As a WR in the Hawaii system, it takes a minumum of one year to grasp basics.

To be honest, we have talented athletes lining up for PT at receiver or slot. They need more time to jell, notwithstanding being in the system for at least a year, as in the case of Darius Bright.

  67. wafan May 20, 2011 11:39 am

    Happy birthday DT!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  68. Stephen Tsai May 20, 2011 11:59 am

    warriorsun:

Bell was on the Nevada team in 2009. (Prior to that he played two years at JCs.)

He played early in the 2010 season for UH, was told his case had to be reviewed so he was held out for something like eight or nine games, then cleared to play at the end.

Clay has been invited to training camp in August. But now UH is reviewing whether he qualifies for the special exemption. If he doesn’t, he likely will be added to the first-day-of-school expanded roster.

  69. Stephen Tsai May 20, 2011 12:08 pm

Transfer rules have some loopholes. And some nooses.

Last year, Lancer Tuitele (born Lancer Iosefa) wanted to transfer to UH. But it turns out he lost two years because of the timing of his church mission. He left on his mission early in a fall semester and returned early in a fall semester. The NCAA ruled that he had the opportunity to still play in the semester he returned; thus his clock did not stop.

  70. lava May 20, 2011 12:15 pm

Re 70, that’s losing the forest amongst the trees, or maybe in this case weeds. Ridiculous.

  71. Dennis Halloran May 20, 2011 12:31 pm

Thanks Pomai. Although I was a bloodless vet, I did three years just before Nam and felt I did my best to repay the country for my good fortune in getting through college in a family of 8

  72. Dennis Halloran May 20, 2011 12:33 pm

We are experiencing huge waves at The Wedge because of a south swell. Great pics on OCregister.com and on my facebook page

  73. Dennis Halloran May 20, 2011 12:35 pm

Is it just me or do you have to be a looker to play softball for Kentucky?

  74. Stephen Tsai May 20, 2011 12:36 pm

Anyway, I had never, ever head of any transfer exemption. At least, I don’t think I did, until yesterday.

I always thought if you’re at a Division I school and transfer, regardless of your scholarship status or whether you played in a game, you have to sit out.

But then someone reminded me of the Bell situation. He was on Nevada’s scout team as a junior. Then he transferred to UH. He was listed in the play-by-play sheet for the Charleston Southern game last year. He was going to be in the rotation when Rodney Bradley got hurt last year, but then his case went into extended review. He was officially cleared to play in UH’s final two games. He’s eligible to play in 2011

I do know that some sports offer a one-time-transfer-without-sitout exemption. That’s why the volleyball transfer from UCI can play for the Warriors next year without sitting out. But I think that’s mostly in sports that split scholarships. Can the Wahine volleyball team, for instance, do that? I don’t know. And not sure if that applies to football. Like I said, I never heard of any exemption until yesterday.

  75. warriorsun May 20, 2011 12:36 pm

ST, my point of context was Bell DNP while at NEV in 2009 although being on the wolfpack roster.

His JUCO association is of no moment as it occured prior to his enrollment at Reno….however, Clay played for the mustangs in 2010….they are not on equal footing by comparison although both are subject to review by the NCAA.

It is not uncommon for UH to either drag their feet or drop the ball in its admission processing–i believe in the Bell case that was more probable.

  76. Stephen Tsai May 20, 2011 12:41 pm

    warriorsun:

You’re right in that Clay’s game participation last year should be assurance that he must sit out this year. But like I said, there’s talk he might be eligible for an exemption I never heard of, which is why his case is being reviewed.

Two good things for UH fans: They’re getting a good receiver for free, and if he’s not eligible to play this season, that will open up a training-camp spot for one of the first-day players.

Back to back home runs by Montplasir and Bayus in the 2nd inning. Rainbows 4-0. Still going on. Nobody out.

  91. Lanaiboy May 20, 2011 2:29 pm

WAC teams doing well so far in the softball regionals. NMS leads 9-0 over Texas Tech and Nebraska and Fresno State are in a scoreless tie in the ninth inning. I root for the WAC teams cuz they get more respect for the conference the farther they go.

  92. GRM May 20, 2011 2:43 pm

    Eh Kawika,

That’s my birthday. I’ll be 156 years old (lol)

Both Fresno state and New Mexico State won their regional softball games, with Fresno beating Nebraska 1-0 in ten innings. NMS is a good hitting team and has a fair chance to moving out of its regional. Fresno State relies heavily of Michelle Moses’s arm and she carried the team once again.

  112. d1shima May 20, 2011 4:44 pm

Something’s always askew at Presley Askew….

NaMaSU took 3 of 4 from SJSU outscoring them 45-28.

No such thing as a routine fly ball there.

  113. Garret May 20, 2011 4:46 pm

UH offered a scholarship to WR Delshawn McClellon from Gahr High School (a school UH is quite familiar with for recruiting). Arizona State, Idaho, and Utah apparently offered him scholarships before UH did, so this guy is definitely not under the radar.

I’ve been watching the Tucson Regional on the internet.Texas Tech was an easy win for NMS . TT had no decent pitchers and couldn’t even hit the ball out of the infield.

Arizona looks very good and with that loud home town crowd should be the winner of that regional.

I don’t see NMS or Fresno State making it out of either regional.

  122. Last Call May 20, 2011 5:16 pm

NMS did have a decent amount of fan support but the booing of Nohara was really noticeable. Her run in with the law isn’t any secret in Arizona.

  123. Kazz May 20, 2011 5:19 pm

Who the hell is CSUF? 😆

  124. Kazz May 20, 2011 5:22 pm

    Well, it’s Arizona.

Nohara is the wrong “color”. Them good ole fashioned Arizona folk stickin with their old-fashioned values. 😆 😆

“Hey that Nohara girl is from that Hawaii place”

    “Hawaii?”

“Oh yeah, that place where that —– —— of a president is from.”

“shoot, dang gum president aint even born in the U.S. I reckon…”

Charles Clay is a good kid. He was Loefler’s teammate at Hilo High and was also one of the island’s top sprinters in track. One of his other teammates, Dillin Spikes is also a possible walk-on candidate. That Spikes kid is a beast, but I don’t know if the academic piece is in order. He and Clay were on Hilo high’s 4×100 team. Maybe we’re experiencing some kind of Hilo high influx. If we can only get that Kell kid to transfer back from Oregon State!
