Can’t believe watching Wyoming and how similar they look to Hawaii’s defense, not necessarily schemes, but how they don’t tackle well. Wyoming finally scored and Temple comes back with 1 play for 60+ yards and a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the half. Eerily like our season. That’s why I hope the next coach is from outside he system. Watching teams like Alabama, LSU, etc. tackle and the inability for Hawaii to tackle consistantly for the last few years, may be UH’s philosophy in practice. Looking at the Wyoming fans’ facial expressions reminds me of UH’s fans when we think, “oh, oh, here we go again.” Having an “outside the system” coach may change a lot of the practice ways, which have been going on for quite a few years now. Retaing some of the current asst. coaches would be alright, but at this late stage, he may not have too much of a choice. I do like the passing game though, as 1 pass may equal a touchdown.

Congratulations Warriors on getting that piece of paper!! Your diploma will be with you forever and is something no one can take away. You all have what it takes in terms of time management, that’s for sure – something employers will look for.

  27. Old School Dave December 17, 2011 10:40 am

Former BYU QB Jake Heaps is still looking for a school. He’s visiting Kansas and new HC Charley Weis this weekend.

    http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/2011/12/17/2642888/jake-heaps-byu-transfer-kansas-football

I guess UW and WAZZU have other plans. Surprising since he’s from Washington State.

Hurry up and hire Norm Chow. Maybe the idea of being coached by him will attract Heaps to UH. Manhattan, Kansas or Honolulu?

  28. Derek December 17, 2011 10:43 am

Job well done, graduates! Good luck in the future, continue to make Hawaii proud. Forever Warriors. Hoo-ah! I count 18 graduates in the picture.

You have to credit Coach McMackin for prioritizing the academic side. Thanks coach. Hope some more senior players are graduating in the spring semester.

Papajoe #19 about Linda Lingle ad, yep she’s been thar awhile

up in that little corner, kind of a long shot. You think she would

put on a helmet or black eye shadow or something to tie in with

Tsai’s football theme. Well, at least she was pro inter-island ferry.

  35. Derek December 17, 2011 10:50 am

Nice story about Utah State’s turnaround and success this year. Credit to them and I hope they win the bowl game today. I went to Logan, Utah to see Colt Brennan play in 2006. Strictly a college town. It was the beginning of November, but the weather was quite nice.

UH-49, Utah State 14. After that game, Colt was named USA today National Player of the week. BYU QB Riley Nelson was a starting QB freshman for Utah State. After the game, I remember our tour group went to have a buffet dinner at Riley Wallace’s favorite restaurant for his team, the Golden Corral. After that, we went to a Wahine Volleyball game on campus where the Wahine swept Utah State. It was a great day!

  36. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 11:03 am

Seeing all those graduates makes me proud of our Warrior Football program. I hope the next coach will at least maintain the high level of APR that Mack had managed. Mack would very reluctantly dip into the red-shirts to give the student-athlete a leg up on his “student” obligations…It may have lead to his release, but he should stand proud for his firm commitment to the educational needs of his players.

    Mahalo Mack!…

Congratulations WARRIORS CLASS OF 2011 !!! Whootah! You guys rock!

  44. Ralph December 17, 2011 11:37 am

Wyoming finished in 3rd place in back of TCU and Boise State, next season Wyoming will be the highest finishing team in the MWC with TCU, Boise, and 4th place SDST leaving the conference.

Hawaii will be left with the bottom feeders of the old MWC and the WAC retreads Nevada and Fresno State.

The Cowboys are having a difficult time competing with the Temple Owls today.

Who will find employment in the NFL or CFL?

Royce Pollard—has talent in catching, maybe CFL?

Richard Torres—another Chad Owens in heart, CFL?

    Aarron Brown—definitely NFL

    Zach Masch—monster hits all season—NFL?

    Kaniela Tuipuloto—NFL?

    Brett Leonard—definitely NFL

Tank Hopkins—CFL db but could crack NFL special teams…

    Vaugn Meatoa—definitely NFL

UH tried their best with the OHs all under 6′.

RALPH: Shoji tries to recruit for height – Juniper of USC, for example, was highly recruited by Shoji.

It’s like our football coaches trying to get 5-star or four-star players; its like us trying to recruit locally.

It is not a lack of trying but if you had a chance to go to a Stanford, a USC or UCLA or a Penn State or some power-house volleyball team, would you even consider Hawaii?

  121. jm2375 December 17, 2011 5:21 pm

Ralph – you want size or you want the girls to stay home? Not enough roster spots for both. Recruit for size and the only local kids would be back row players. Besides, I’d take Kanani, Jane, Kim, Lily and even Chanteal any day.

  122. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 5:33 pm

When all those “fans” were clamoring for McMackin’s firing, I wonder if they ever took into consideration all the supporting staff that might be replaced with his retirement?

Total attendance for the entire NCAA tournament was a little over 100K and is a record. I figure the 4 Honolulu games accounted for 30%. Hope the NoClueAtAll people realize this and keep awarding UH at least 1st and 2nd round games. Yeah, right. 😈

Congrats to Mike Sealy and UCLA. The crown is finally back where it belongs, in the West.

  124. Ralph December 17, 2011 5:37 pm

you want to win national championships or do you just want to watch a good volleyball match?

Tom I think UH is a powerhouse, we’ve won a lot of games and we have made it to regional finals and national semis and finals, but we haven’t finished, we’ve been close, but we lost to an equally talented team with taller players.

USC and UCLA this year barely beat us but their height was enough of an advantage to win in 5. Washington in last year’s round 2 ate us up with their big and stronger players. Then in the national finals in ’09, Penn State killed us.

  125. Ralph December 17, 2011 5:38 pm

UCLA wins the national championship, last title was back in 1991.

  126. jm2375 December 17, 2011 5:39 pm

mih – #123 – Heffernan and his staff are employed by the Athletic Dept and work with many teams.

  127. jm2375 December 17, 2011 5:44 pm

Ralph – when was the last time a non-BC$ conference team won a national championship in volleyball????? just sayin.

  128. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 5:51 pm

    jm2375,

But he no longer will be the conditioning coach for the football team unless recruited as such, right?

  129. Hiflyer December 17, 2011 5:52 pm

jm2375 – even more reason that we need taller and more athletic type players, when you have an athletic player that is 6′ 3 vs 5’11 it makes a big difference when reaching for shanked balls or tipped balls off the block.

  130. tommui December 17, 2011 5:57 pm

RALPH: the thought came to me that we lost to USC in five and UCLA in four or five games, all of their starters were considerably taller than ours.

    ‘nuf said

  131. Ralph December 17, 2011 5:58 pm

just because a non BCS team hasn’t won a national championship lately doesn’t mean we stop competing, we’ve been there, the nationals, but we need to finish. Penn State, Nebraska, Texas, Stanford, Washington, and USC have been there because they had tall players who were good volleyball players.

UH is an excellent program, we beat Pepperdine and Colorado State with their big players, played UCLA and USC to 5, but for us to reach the finals we need to finish and all I’m saying, we need height to neutralize the opponents 6’2 to 6’5 girls.

  132. el burro sabio December 17, 2011 5:58 pm

Tom is in charge of strength & conditioning coach for all sports. I think he was DeLaura’s actual supervisor, not JJ or Mack.

  133. Wes'side Warrior December 17, 2011 6:01 pm

Howzit, everyone! Very busy day today/this evening.

    Way to go, graduates! Congratulations!

  134. tommui December 17, 2011 6:01 pm

We may not have height to match the USCs or UCLAs but next year, Britany, Emily, Kalei as well as Goodman and Tuianga will be back – Jade Volster will be joining the team and so we will have a bunch of 6-footers plus and Jade is 6’4″. I forgot who is coming in but I recall there were a couple of tall ones also.

  135. Ralph December 17, 2011 6:04 pm

Tom but we lost, moral victories don’t count, and it wasn’t for the lack of trying or inspirational play that we lost those matches, their talent matched ours and they were bigger.

  136. Ralph December 17, 2011 6:05 pm

Manu-Olevao is the lone announced recruit out of Punahou, she is listed as 6’1 OH.

  137. Ralph December 17, 2011 6:07 pm

Brittany, Emily, Kalei, Tuianga and Vorster all play the same position, MB. Emily has the versatility to move to OH.

  138. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 6:07 pm

I thought the football Head Coach is entitled to name his own Conditioning Coach. When Heffernan took over the conditioning program for the football team, didn’t they make it seem like he was getting a promotion, didn’t he also get a boost in pay?

  139. Ralph December 17, 2011 6:13 pm

When Mac appointed Heffernan as FB S/C coach, De Laura found himself without a job. I don’t recall De Laura having the option of continuing to work in the weight room.

  140. MattyBoy December 17, 2011 6:18 pm

If Banker is chosen for HC, watch everybody call for JD and admins head. He will make Hawaii look like fools. I guarantee it.

  141. wowlaulau December 17, 2011 6:27 pm

USC and UCLA’s talent was better than Hawaii’s. I don’t know where people are getting the idea that Shoji does not like tall players. It is not like Hawaii’s coaching staff is not recruiting the same players as USC and UCLA but the fact is that Hawaii is not their first choice and probably never will be. Hawaii is lucky that Shoji can evaluate and develop talent to get these results.

  142. wowlaulau December 17, 2011 6:29 pm

Glad to see people have a crystal ball and knows what will happen in the future. If you can guarantee who will win this years Super Bowl, let me know ….

  143. MattyBoy December 17, 2011 6:41 pm

    #143,

No crystal ball here. Just know that Oregon state got smacked by two division two schools this past season with a horrible finishing season record.. Wait isn’t banker the DC of Oregon state? And now he wants to be head coach? Yeah he’ll be awesome!!

  144. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 6:41 pm

Crystal ball says… Only one of two teams will win the Super Bowl. More specifically, it will be the one with the most points.

  145. MattyBoy December 17, 2011 6:43 pm

He can barely run a defense and now wants to run a whole team?? Again, he’ll be awesome!

  146. MattyBoy December 17, 2011 6:44 pm

    #145,

Hopefully it’s green bay. It’ll be cool to know that Alex green gets a super bowl win and ring in his rookie year. That’ll be nice!

  147. jm2375 December 17, 2011 6:45 pm

    From the UHAD website:

Strength and conditioning coach Tommy Heffernan heads the staff along with assistant Grant Steen and graduate assistants James Chassin, Kamalei Magnani, Mike Johnson and student assistant Ian Hasegawa. Heffernan and his team provide guidance and observe approximately 450 UH student-athletes for optimal performance and injury prevention.

  148. el burro sabio December 17, 2011 6:50 pm

#139 – no, no, and no

  149. el burro sabio December 17, 2011 6:51 pm

Sorry, no, yes, and no. They made it sound that way but he was always the head strength coach.

  150. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 6:53 pm

Whoa.. I had completely forgotten about Steen.

I guess Steen/Heffernan will be written into the pre-nuptials of the football contract…

  151. Ralph December 17, 2011 7:06 pm

K State stops #21 Alabama 71-58 in mbb. Next up, the Salukis in the Diamond Head Classic on Thursday.

  152. Bugaz December 17, 2011 7:07 pm

Hewitt graduates this year, not sure if she will be back. Shoji mentioned this on the radio

  153. Bugaz December 17, 2011 7:11 pm

Hopefully Fonoimoana takes care of business and gets on the team. This could become the key to the loss of Kanani.

  154. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 7:29 pm

Whoa! Looks like another last minute change of lead game with SDJU now on top with half a minute to go… Two well-matched bowl games today…

  155. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 7:38 pm

OMG! … UL-Lafayette makes a 50 yd FG with 4 seconds left to snatch the game away from San Diego State… whoa… wish our Warriors had won a couple more like that.. dang!…

  156. Let Donovan Choose December 17, 2011 7:42 pm

If Banker or whoever wins the job, people can call for Donovan’s head if that guy fails and Donovan might get fired in the worst case scenario.

Should be a great TRUTH TELL ALL BOOK TO FOLLOW considering all signs point to someone else calling the shots and NOT Donovan.

  157. Ralph December 17, 2011 7:43 pm

not a good day for the MWC and WAC as Wyoming, SDST and Utah State losses in Bowl games.

  158. ai-eee-soos December 17, 2011 7:53 pm

    re #159.

yup – not good at all.

  159. el burro sabio December 17, 2011 8:09 pm

Donovan will never tell the truth. His termination agreement will have that same “no talk stink” clause.

  160. el burro sabio December 17, 2011 8:10 pm

JD also has to worry about Kinda Shy’s job

  161. al December 17, 2011 8:27 pm

heffernan, i believe is not an appointed staff member such as the assistants. he is not on a year to year contract but is employed by the state of hawaii on regular status.

  162. al December 17, 2011 8:28 pm

kinda shy is employed by the state of hawaii as would regular status employees.

c’mon now…why we trying to act tan taran with other peoples??

  163. al December 17, 2011 8:30 pm

how many coaches have you hired braddah?

how many teams have you coached braddah?

  164. al December 17, 2011 8:35 pm

    mih…of your list

one was not coming back anyway

lumpkin is paid by na koa

two were grad assistants who technically may have ended their term

    five others are state employees

  165. 3-Prong December 17, 2011 8:46 pm

121 Just think if SCs Jupiter had come to Hawaii and played along side Kanani. Got to get FF eligible for next year. With the youth on this team, future would look bright, but we need FF as a terminator

  166. papajoe2 December 17, 2011 9:38 pm

I watched Jupiter the last 2 games. While she is definately good, she wasn’t as overwelming as she was against UH. I take Kanani any day as she is an awesome overall player. Does everything exceptionally well. Now, like you said, if they were teammates…..

  167. kruzen December 17, 2011 10:40 pm

    Congrats to all the graduates!

  168. madeinhawaii December 17, 2011 11:01 pm

So these are the staff members that the new HC would have to make a decision over…

    Rich Miano

    Cal Lee

    Nick Rolovich

    Dave Aranda

    Brian Smith

    Gordon Shaw

    Tony Tuioti

    Dick Tomey

The rest are somewhat built into the program.. (including Lumpkin, unless Na Koa no longer wishes to pay his salary.)

Inoke Funaki and Ryan Biesemeyer will probably move on. Best of luck to the both of them.

  169. wowlaulau December 17, 2011 11:13 pm

lol, once again a guarantee backed by an opinion that means very little…..

  170. MattyBoy December 17, 2011 11:24 pm

    171

No not an opinion. It is definitely a fact! Did Oregon state not suck and lose to division two teams this past season? That’s worse than Mack’s team this past season. I’d rather have Mack than that guy lol.

  171. homey â„ž December 17, 2011 11:31 pm

OSU lost to two DII teams?

Nope just one division II team. I typed a typo in my previous post. Meant just one division II team.
