Shutter suspended 4 games

UH today announced that quarterback Cayman Shutter will be suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season as a result of  his no-contest plea to a drunken-driving charge. He had been suspended for violating team rules (the arrest on March 29). This suspension is based on breaking UH’s Code of Conduct (accepting the driving while “impaired” charge)

He will be allowed to participate in the offseason conditioning program. In a release, head coach Norm Chow said, it has not been determined if Shutter will be invited to participate in training camp.

When your last name can be turned into a phonetic adverb, the slogan possibilities are endless.

“Courageous Lee.”

“Intelligent Lee.”

“Frank Lee.”

And so it goes for former UH assistant coach Cal Lee, who said he is running for an OHA seat. Lee is smart, thoughtful and, heck, he knows everybody’s father.

He also is tactful. Asked why he wanted to run, Lee said: “Why not?”

OHA is now part of  the statewide elections. The voting is no longer restricted to only people of  Hawaiian ancestry.

Blackie Pele-Poti — known as Blackie Poti when he was a UH football player in the late 1980s — was remembered as a gifted athlete and nice guy. Poti recently was slain in Las Vegas.

Former UH head coach Bob Wagner said Pele-Poti was both strong and agile. “He was a good guy,” Wagner said.

David Hallums, a former UH basketball player, remembered playing pick-up basketball games with Pele-Poti at Pearl City parks and rec centers. Pele-Poti also played basketball for Waipahu High. He was teammates with the Marauders’ twin towers — Dean Viena and Dino Viena.

“He was very athletic,” Hallums said. “He had great footwork. He was a great person.”

Wagner, who officially retires as Kamehameha-Hawaii’s athletic director on July 31, praised defensive back Shaun Kagawa, who recently received a scholarship offer from UH.

“He’s a good kid who’s an excellent athlete with good ball skills,” Wagner said.

This past spring, Kagawa earned the second-highest ranking at the Nike/SPARQ combine. Kagawa, who will be a senior in the fall, already has received interest from the military academies. Kagawa also is one of the state’s top basketball guards.

imagesDeepest sympathy to the family of Richard Among, who died last night. Pastor Among was a great man. He also was a big UH fan and a long-time season-ticket buyer. He used to take his morning walks around the UH grass field when the Warriors were practicing. He’ll be missed.

yup…lots of challenges this year for the football team.

    hoping for a 6-6 finish.

defense will carry us while the offense finds its mojo. those 3 db’s will make it tough on the opposition and give the front seven a “reckles abandom” mentality.

With the Stafford loan interest rate doubling to 6.8% next month post-secondary education is moving out of reach for a lot of folks.

Loa, here’s the list of announced broadcasts of Saturday’s game:

The Force will remain home this weekend, facing the Jacksonville Sharks on Saturday, June 9th at 7 p.m. EST at the The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia. When the Force met the Sharks earlier this season, they dominated the game, with a final score of 69-41. The Sharks will no doubt be looking for revenge and to keep their 3-game winning streak alive. The showdown will be streamed live on Ustream as well as televised on WSB’s MeTV 2.2, Comcast channel 248 and Charter channel 126.

Come out and watch our guys as they prepare for international competition. The scrimmage should last until approx 5:30 PM.

didn’t realize that there were plans for a new softball stadium…wasn’t a chunk of change put down over the past 8-10 years to correct the design errors?

A couple hundred thousand was spent raising the field 4-5 feet after the stands were built.

Light poles and the lamps are the same since before the stands were built.

Only this year they changed out two outer most speakers for the PA system.

    Scoreboard is still original.

Netting for the batting cages have been changed.

Any paint touch ups have been completed by both the players and staff and the groundscrew over the years.

This proposed $11 million dollar project does not appear to be a new stadium.

    http://dppweb.honolulu.gov/DPPWeb/default.asp?PossePresentation=BuildingPermit&PosseObjectId=45368298

Building Permit Application Number: A2012-05-1663 Job Number: 045338783-002 Description: [TMK: 28029001] (5/60) UH SOFTBALL STADIUM — STADIUM IMPROVEMENTS – REPLACE LIGHT POLES, FOUNDATIONS, CONC WALKWAYS, MISC RAILINGS, REINSTALL STAIRS, FENCING, GRASSING, ETC. So according to the above, their touching up on existing areas. The only real necessary and significant item on the above mentioned is light replacement.

For the pricetag I am disappointed as a fan and booster as to what is not even in

    consideration:

Plumbing Inspection Required: No Number of Rooms – Deleted: Plumbing Phases: NONE

Unless I am reading the above report wrong, we can throw out a bathroom expansion or a separate bathroom for the players and coaches.

An $11 million upgrade to the softball stadium and they can’t even improve the restroom facilities?? That much money for lights, walkways, fencing and turf? This sounds like an investigative journalism opportunity to me.

  53. al June 8, 2012 8:28 am

    thanks kevin.

i just found this a bit curious to me.

Q: Recently the Star Advertiser had a story written by Ferd Lewis mentioning several items with regards to UH facility improvements. One particular item of interest is a 2.4 million dollar expense for softball stadium renovations. On Google, I managed to find an NCAA document listing the same 2.4 million dollar expense as “design for new Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium”, plus a 1.7 million dollar cost for replacement of lights at the softball stadium as well tentatively scheduled to be completed December 2012. Could you elaborate on these items?

JD: Those numbers are approximately correct. We have received funding to do design work to softball stadium. We still have to secure finding for the actual construction.

Will keep all posted, here and on Facebook.

  59. Kevin June 8, 2012 9:07 am

    Al,

$2.4 million for design work… One should be curious.

  60. Kevin June 8, 2012 9:12 am

For now the Wahine softball team along with tennis andI believe another sport will continue to share the one locker room.

That locker room is to be rennovated according to plans and I think some corporate sponsors will be involved in the funding or donation of goods.

The movement of track and field, cross country, amd soccer into the new locker rooms at the new Ching Complex will help aliviate needed space in the current womens locker room that services all of them.

But still $13 million for something the size and ammenities of the Ching Complex compared to the touch-ups at the softball stadium for only 2 million less just boggles the mind.

  61. A-House June 8, 2012 9:15 am

In quiet conversation Jim D did mention a new softball stadium – estimated cost is $11-13 million – covered, additonal seats, lockers/showers/bathroom for home and visiting teams – included tearing down existing structure.

  65. A-House June 8, 2012 9:28 am

As it’s structured today, all donations funnel through UH Foundation where they assess a 3% “fee” for handling the account.

If someone should donate , say $5 million to UHAD, the foundation’s take would be $150,000. That’s a lof of “bread” to pay for administration fee. Is the Foundation a “non-profit”? How many people work for the Foundation and who pays their salary?

Is there any way to not having to pay this fee? Someone mentioned several years ago to make the check payable direct to, say UH Football, to avoid the fee. Is this still true?

Also, another said send donation to Na Koa.

    Who has the scoops?

  68. Kevin June 8, 2012 9:37 am

    A-House,

As long as a check is required to go to UH Foundation, there pretty much will be a fee. Online things to Na Koa returned on my statement as “UH Foundation”. Never wrote a check to them before.

99.9% sure the policy is in place that the Foundation ‘must’ handle all donations to UH entities, including athletic fundraising.

AHouse #66 what kevin said in #69 in pretty accurate as I understand it.

    UHF pays its employees.

I do not understand how many employees they have but UHF does a lot of fundraising and is not just a depository. Moneys that come in do get administered, and invested (assuming that it is an annuity or trust gift).

Don Weir could give you information of its workings.

    A house and tommui,

A client of mine recently was looking to donate a tidy sum for non sports related stuff, but didn’t want to set up its own Foundation. The choices were donating to the UH Foundation or the Hawaii Community Foundation. The UH Foundation initial set up fee was 2% while the Hawaii Community Foundation was 1%. Both charged the same annual administration fee. We set up a donor controlled fund with HCF because it allowed more control as to where the funds could go and because the initial set up fee was less. Once the money is donated to the HCF that is where you take your deduction. From HCF you can give to any 501c3; I don’t know if UH still requires the HCF to give to the UH Foundation or whether you can give straight to the football team or to Na Koa. I don’t know if Na Koa is under the umbrella of the UH Foundation or is its own separate 501c3.

I don’t know what all this Santa talk is about, but I can say for sure that folks who try to “out” Santa or ask if a slim, muscular, well built (and ruggedly handsome) guy needs a pillow to play Santa, those kinds of people are the kind who end up getting lumps of coal and switches in their stockings at Christmas.

    Just sayin…

When I worked for a T-shirt company in Hilo one of my first assignments was to come up with a Homecoming design for Honoka’a. For two days I struggled to draw a Dragon from memory. The Art director saw my plight. He finally said to me, “uuuuuh… you know, we’re not in elementary school anymore. It’s not cheating if you trace. Just get the job done! Here’s some pictures of Dragons. Hurry up and start tracing!”

I was surprised to find all famous artist in history traced. It helped them understand techniques.

gigi– I’ve heard that too. I am dismayed. OTOH, there might be a great need in the Notary Public arena soon…

When I was a school computer teacher in elementary in the 90’s, parents would often ask me why I didn’t teach their kids how to keyboard. In “computer” I taught font, size, style, formatting, layout, graphics, painting creation and manipulation of clip art. Used object-oriented drawing programs to create things. Hypermedia and digitizing. Seldom taught database and spreadsheet. But not 1 minute of keypounding…but I could not argue it wasn’t a “necessary” skill.

Now, 15 years later I feel vindicated… how many fingers/thumbs do you use to type on a smartphone or iPad?

…but learning how to write basic alphabet…whoa.

  107. A-joe June 8, 2012 1:09 pm

heeheehehee… my friend and I grew up tracing Peanuts. My friend got really proficient in doing Peanuts Characters. So much so that all throughout high school all the girls requested him to draw in their annuals. Chicks dug his style. =)

In ’99-’00 I taught a graphics class at Leeward Community to delinquent high school dropout kids. One day while teaching basic layout formats I gave them 8 pages of solid content they needed to type out. I figured this would take up most of the class time for them to do But within 10 minutes 12 of the 15 kids had typed out everything and awaited my further instructions. Despite having the preemptive notion of being dropouts, delinquents, slackers, drug users, I was simply blown away at how all of them were proficient in typing. I totally misjudged their book cover.

Funny because we’re really gonna have to see what the conceptual drawings will look like, but the description alone is enough to raise some questions.

If it ends up being what it is, then I’d rather see them take 9 million dollars elsewhere and keep the 1.7 for the new lights if they’re not committed to lockers, showers, and bathrooms for the players and coaches.

Its like giving someone money to go get a blue ray DVD of The Avengers Collector’s Edition for me and they come back with Mannequin 2 on sale for 5.00 and gets me a whole bunch of Doritos Tacos from Taco Bell with the difference.

P.S. Mannequin movies were terrible and I hate Taco Bell.

The university rebuilt a new bus stop at a cost of $90,000. When questioned why such a high price, the university said the bus stop needed to be designed built to match similar architecture in the immediate area.

At the time the Manoa Lions Club said they would’ve done a basic bus stop with ample cover for free. All with donated material and labor.

Not completely true. Like I was comparing, you have these touch up elements over at RWSS costing essentially 13 million (including the hefty design fee of 2 mil) and the Ching Complex that will include new grandstands, new locker rooms, and new showers and restrooms, plus new office space for essentially the same pricetag.

Off topic. Just booked a flight for 2 to Vegas with a minivan for 7 days on Allegiant Airlines. I saved big bucks. Has anybody road on Allegiant before? Yes, I paid for priority boarding, insurance, $20 a seat up front, $15 for a carryon, and luggage has to be 40 pounds or less, but it was still less than I could find elsewhere. They also don’t have first class on board too. If nobody tried it yet, I’ll be the sacraficial lamb, but I’m not going until late August. I may catch the UH-USC game while in America.

Two comments about UH Foundation and the Stan Sheriff Center.

First, my reading of the Foundation’s annual report from two years ago, my take is that Administrative costs were about 20% of the total “take”. Considering they get free office space in Bachman Hall(?), that seems to be excessive. It’s my understanding that they have a staff of over 40 individuals. Keep in mind that they are not minimum wage staffers!

Second, visiting the Lower Campus during the recent graduation ceremonies for the first time in nearly 20 years, I was very disappointed in the SSC. It was not in “prime time” condition. Leaves littered the hallway and first floor rooftop, one office window had the stain of a drink still splashed on the pane, even 55 gallon drums being used as rubbish receptacles. Walking from the SSC to the football practice field, I walked along the mauka perimeter of the Ching Field and the pathway was a wide swath of dirt. I could only imagine when it rained and the path became muddy. The area beneath the stairway leading from the main entrance to the SSC to Ching Field was pure dirt. Has it ever been anything else? Since the SSC at graduation is the one time it gets exposed to the wider community, especially the parents and friends of the graduates, I would have expected that the SSC would have been spic-n-span for the public’s purview. Not so. UH maintenance should spave the pathway with a 10-12′ wide concrete walkway, it seems to get widespread use.

Seems to me that Management takes a lax; i.e., lazy attitude towards the facilites. They need to take a critical view of the maintenance of the facilities which reflects on their attidude towards the students. They should remember that the students are the reason their jobs exist and the care and treatment of the students should be FOREMOST in their minds.

The one bright spot in my observation is that the landscaped area withing the parking structure appeared to be landscaped with plants. Not twenty years ago when it was bare dirt and littered with rubbish. However, has anyone given any thought to paving the landscaped area with concrete and erecting suspended slabs above at each floor filling in the opening? Knock down the railing and increase the number of parking stalls within the structure. Properly schuled, the work could be done over summer vacation. I made that suggestion to a UH Vice President years ago.

Regarding the design of the softball stadium, a friend of mine (an architect) knows the designer of the stadium Apparently, the designer was not at fault for the problem. During the design phase, the administration was well aware of the problem; however, it was to be addressed during the second phase which would include raising the playing field. However, when the manure hit the fan and all the nasty comments were made, the administration hastily secured addition funds to immediately raise the field. The architect remained silent even though UH got what it contracted for and didn’t respond with any rebuttals. Nobody from UH’s side stood up and took the blame.

If any of you think it was the architect’s fault, why was he soon after, awarded another contract by DAGS for another project? That was his payment for keeping silent and criticizing the UH administration, after all, he still wanted State contracts.

  139. al June 8, 2012 3:52 pm

now, now kevin…the problem was that the developer did not do his homework when having the design done by non-experienced folks of the game. they should have consulted with other architects of experience, made on site visits, and most of all review it with the hc.

sounds like there are plans to construct a new softball stadium in the future. it is why they are spending some cash for the design. i am pretty sure that jd and coolen would not allow it happen twice.

gender equity will right the situation…it is why they will spend some cash for this.

  140. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2012 4:01 pm

Al: if the field has been raised, then the problem with the stadium has been solved. So why bother to replace it with a new one? The current one is not that old. Isn’t it still functional?

  141. Kevin June 8, 2012 4:02 pm

    Al,

As for what will eventually become of the 11 million dollar “stadium” via the 2 million dollar plan, well we will have to see right? I like things on paper. That link to the C&C permit site is what I have to look at and maybe in a few weeks I can ask myself from those closest and the info is recent as of June 6, 2012 I believe as one of the approvals carries that date.

So until then if that is all we have to go by, I wont assume anything else.

Hard to deny documented information. Easy to assume spoken words.

The basic rule of media relations is to release bad news on Friday afternoon because fewer people watch the news on Friday night or read the paper on Saturday. But this wasn’t really bad news. Shutter ended up with a good plea in which he gets to drive and is in a probationary period. UH gets to make a statement. I would think more people would want to know that.

  158. kapakahi June 8, 2012 7:01 pm

Confirming that what KR heard about the softball stadium fiasco is indeed mostly correct. One clarification is that the phased construction was UH’s own idea….not the Design Architect’s…..due to limited available construction funding.

Once a certain then new and still current UH Assistant AD went public with the perceived design error, all the UH Athletic Department administration fell in line with the same storyline. Then the State Comptroller (who later became UH VP for Adminstration. Hmmmm…..) also fell in line with the same storyline….which basically set up the Design Architect to be the proverbial “sacrificial lamb” or “scapegoat”.

Only clarification to what KR stated is…..that the Design Architect chose on his own to NEVER work with the State ever again….particularly the UH system…..and today continues to operate a successful architectural practice working with private and commercial sector clients….that he could trust. Really his only real “error” was in judgement to be too accommodating by following UH’s phased construction idea.

THINK ABOUT IT…..There was really NOTHING the Design Architect could really say or do to defuse the situation after the State and UH had already hung him out to dry.

Pretty much common knowledge amongst the local architectural and engineering community.

“These are the facts of the case. And they are undisputed.”

  159. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2012 7:04 pm

    Kaneohe Resident:

The designer of the Wahine stadium was Bryce Uyehara. (Punahou ’75) At the time Bryce also was an adjunct professor at UH Manoa. He taught undergraduate instruction in architectural design; Lectures, seminars and studio courses.

Bryce never did a stadium before. He was not familiar with site design. Bryce was given the job because of his inside contacts. UH trusted his recommendation. Bryce was totally at fault of the design plain and simple.

Bryce also designed and built the University Bus Stop posted earlier.

    Bryce has done other work:

    – City and County of Honolulu-Haleiwa Skateboard Park

    etc…

  164. kapakahi June 8, 2012 7:37 pm

    #164,

Designs are always limited by available construction funding….and site constraints. Just can’t build what can’t be afforded….regardless of the design.

Problem here was that the originally designated construction funding just didn’t correspond to UH’s overall dreams and expectations.

SO….please enlighten the rest of us by explaining how the designer is “totally at fault”….which clearly implies that $$$$ was a non-issue.

    ?????

  165. kapakahi June 8, 2012 8:09 pm

BTW, anyone else notice how nothing was ever mentioned by UH about any more fiascos on rheir construction projects….whether on Upper and/or Lower Campus…..ever since UH took over managing its own design and construction projects…..UNTIL JJ left suddenly and unexpectedly in 2007….when the truth was finally exposed to the public….and the legislators.

Hope everything has improved now at UH…..even though STILL nothing is ever mentioned by UH….at least publicly.

    Hmmmm……

Considering the offense, JMHO that Cayman was lucky to get off light…..in comparison to others who are no longer on team for committing other less offenses.

Just hope that Shutter takes Chow’s message to heart and learns his lesson….’cuz Chow has already demonstrated that he doesn’t tolerate repeat offenders.

Heavenly Consolation to the Richard Among ohana.

  169. kapakahi June 8, 2012 8:44 pm

#164 apparently not all that Observant after all.

  170. LizKauai June 8, 2012 8:46 pm

Warriors will need every player to meet the challenges of this new season.

I wish them all WELL. Play when you can and do your best!

    GO WARRIORS!

  171. kapakahi June 8, 2012 8:54 pm

LMAO! Sorry but just couldn’t resist!

  172. Observant June 8, 2012 9:08 pm

    Kapakahi-

Pretty much common knowledge amongst the local architectural and engineering community designers have no say in the decision of designing and building anything. They blindly do as their told.

I stand corrected. The designer of the softball stadium was never paid to think and advise. UH, through their own volition, figured digging down to create sunken dugouts (at an additional $125K to the project) was too costly. Instead, UH concluded it was cheaper to first raise the stadium and later allocate an additional $2.1 Million to backfill the entire field. Kenneth Mortimer, Hugh Yoshida, Jim Donovan, Marilyn Kaho’ohanohano and the entire board of regents were in agreement from the start their combined knowledge was suffice. The designer’s expertise was never needed nor requested.

But, all this is old news. However they got fleeced in the past, UH currently has a Softball Stadium in dire need of upgrades. One hopes the original designer bids on the project and wins because apparently, “Kapakahi” construction is acceptable.

    LMAO! I couldn’t resist!

  173. kapakahi June 8, 2012 10:32 pm

    #178,

I’m so glad to know that UH administrators blindly trust and enpower their professional consultants and licensed contractors to understand and translate their visions to become reality….since funding limitations are a non-issue for UH projects.

AND…that UH doesn’t feel it necessary to actively participate in nor oversee the budgeting, planning, design, and construction phases of their own projects…..NOT because they don’t care…..BUT because they blindly entrust the professional consultants and licensed contractors to serve their best interests.

AND….I feel even better after being so enlightened by this newfound information that you’ve so graciously and observantly imparted to the rest of us…..given that UH now manages its own design and construction projects….not like when the original softball stadium was designed and constructed.

All of us UH fans can all now rest assured that the most qualified and experienced softball stadium facility designer will be selected by UH administrators to correctly implement these direly needed upgrades to the softball stadium…..instead of how the original designer was selected back then because of “inside contacts”.

NOW….I finally understand why the State Legislature recently decided to revoke UH’s long-standing procurement exemption. It was because UH no longer wanted nor needed this procurement exemption.

    http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/blog/morning_call/2012/04/bill-fails-to-extend-university-of.html

NOW…..I even better knowing and finally understanding why none of the general public will ever hear about more design and/or construction fiascos at the UH ever again. It’ll be because all UH projects will be designed and constructed properly….not like when JJ left in 2008.

NOW…..I finally understand how the designer was “totally at fault” for that “kapakahi” original softball stadium design.

    Thanks for being so OBSERVANT!!!

#100 DPK – STEVEM suggested that I should try webmail.hawaii.rr and it works. Not that I expect to do a lot of e-mails. Still can access the blog and throw in my two-cents.

  175. Observant June 8, 2012 10:47 pm

You’re welcome Kapakahi. I’m glad we agree the designer was at fault on this particular project.

    That wasn’t so hard.

  176. Hemojang June 8, 2012 11:01 pm

    Observant,

I am Kapakahi’s brother. Now the whole story is hemojang. 🙂

  177. kapakahi June 8, 2012 11:29 pm

    #182,

Didn’t say that I agreed…..just that I understood your chain of logic.

SO I understand…..BUT not necessarily to agree.

Good enough for me! Hope it is for you too!

  178. Observant June 8, 2012 11:48 pm

184- Good to have you both as Warrior fans!
