Davis indicted on six counts

A grand jury today indicted cornerback JoPierre Davis on six felony counts.
He remains on suspension from the team, and is not on the Warriors’ roster. He still is on scholarship and is permitted to attend classes, but he is not allowed to train with the team or use the athletic department facilities.

    Congratulations to the winners!

  2. Garret March 19, 2009 6:11 am

I’m posting from the San Diego Airport’s commuter terminal. The airport is completely covered in fog, but my flight is scheduled to depart on-time in 45 minutes…

  3. Garret March 19, 2009 6:14 am

I’m very, very glad that Drew Hiro won!

  4. Committed Road Warrior March 19, 2009 6:19 am

Top 10! Congrats to the winners. Figured odds were good that Drew Hiro was gonna win.

First round of tourney games are underway! Everyone fill out their bracket?

  5. Loa March 19, 2009 6:24 am

i was entering for DrewHiro since i cannot make it to the match
if you don’t mind, please pass it on to one of the other winners

    Top 10!!

Thanks ST. Now I gotta find someone to go with.

    Off to work. bbl.

  7. Garret March 19, 2009 6:28 am

USC’s basketball coach just took a shot at UH…though he was joking (I hope), I didn’t find it that funny.

Floyd also has a reason why Obama seems to have an anti-Pac-10 bias.

“He’s from Hawaii,” Floyd said. “Every athlete from Hawaii thinks he should be recruited by the Pac-10. The president wasn’t good enough, but he should let go of his anger. He needs to move past it.”

  8. Kekoa March 19, 2009 6:29 am

Thanks ST…my opponent ‘Drew’ quite a few entries, but I managed to stay with him with my one vote. I’ll pick up my ticket at the box office. Me and Pops will be rootin’ for the home team!

Congrats to jm, Loa and myki. (Sorry sj, you gotta stay home watch da dog).

  9. Garret March 19, 2009 6:30 am

Texas Tech’s head coach is upset that his QB got the “system QB” label from the NFL…kind of reminds me of what NFL scouts were saying about Colt.

Although he may be a bit biased, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach believes Graham Harrell is the best quarterback in next month’s NFL draft.

Leach, who scoffs at the system-quarterback label, angrily talked about NFL teams’ concern regarding Harrell’s ability to work from under center.

“You bring up easily the most pitiful NFL cop-out of all,” Leach said in a telephone interview.

“And you can send that message to the whole NFL. Any coach who has ever said or uttered those words or considers that a concern, here’s my message for them: How could you possibly look yourself in the mirror and consider yourself an NFL coach and not be able to teach a guy to run back three steps, five steps and seven steps? I can teach a child that!

“Any coach in the NFL who can’t do that ought to be fired!”

  10. Garret March 19, 2009 6:32 am

Mike Leach offered to teach NFL coaches how to drop back.

“I can do that,” Leach said of teaching a quarterback to drop back. “I only need a three-hour window. I’ll have a great clinic for all the NFL coaches who are so horrible that they can’t teach a guy to take a snap under center and go backwards.”

  11. Garret March 19, 2009 6:32 am

    Got to go now…boarding.

    GOOD MORNING TSAIKO’S!

    **More Good News From Florida!**

    Florida Ted Writes:

    “Hi, Kekoa,

Thanks for your lovely letter. I can read, but writing is very hard still. After the initial miracles, for which I’m truly grateful, had worn off, certain kind of damages are visible to me. Nobody can see them, except me.

The mind is a very strange a wonderful thing. That’s all I can write for now. This took me almost 45 minutes.
So, I’m not ready for blogging just yet.

Aloha, my friend, and all my fellow Tsaikos,

    ForidaTed”

  13. NYUH March 19, 2009 6:38 am

  14. NYUH March 19, 2009 6:42 am

Good on Leach for slapping down the NFL and their prejudices against “shotgun” QBs.

  15. djmitcho March 19, 2009 6:48 am

Good Morning Tsaikos! Aiyah…looks like my bracket might take a hit already with Texas A&M rolling BYwho right now.

  16. Committed Road Warrior March 19, 2009 6:55 am

    djmitcho: Ditto. Same with Butler/LSU.

Kekoa: Good to hear that FloridaTed is making progress. Continued prayers and thoughts to him in his recovery effort.

  17. Committed Road Warrior March 19, 2009 7:00 am

Northridge playing Memphis close right now. Hopefully this isn’t the 2-15 scare like last year’s Duke vs. Belmont (I think it was that).

  18. myki March 19, 2009 7:01 am

    Good morning to Tsai-kos everywhere!!

Thanks so much Stephen, I guess I can’t complain that I never win anything, anymore. Will give you a call in a bit to make arrangements for pick up tonight.

    Thank you again!!

  21. Buffoman March 19, 2009 7:31 am

That comment by Floyd is great recruiting material for UH coaches when speaking to local kids. There’s that Pac 10 arrogance again that kids from Hawaii just can’t step up and they Pac10 are doing the local kids a favor by “allowing them” into the Pac 10 circle.

Heck, paly for UH and scheduled Pac 10 teams and shove it in their faces.

in manila, driving lanes have no meaning. if a road is designed and marked for 2 lanes, they have 5 lanes of cars, trucks, buses, etc. how you survive in that kind of driving is unreal. i did not see one accident, but if they had one, no place to stop. it is a mad, mad, mad world of driving.

Florida Ted- good hearing from you!
Love the quotes from Coach Leach. When will the NFL wake-up already? College Football has it down. Take the National Championship game for example- both QB’s worked from the gun pretty much the entire game.

  55. Pauoa Boy March 19, 2009 10:40 am

Also hoping Letuli can put it all together this year barring injury. He has shown flashes of becoming the next top lineman for us. If he can get fellow teammate Kia to rid of the attitude and focus, the OLine should be auryte with Coach Shaw at the helm…

PB ~ Both O & D-line will have to have a strong rotation of personnel. Looking at the physically demanding travel and game schedule still TBA, it will not be easy money. Keeping our linemen healthy from week to week on the road will be the key to our line coachs overall success.

    Re-The new OL coach

What turns me on about Coach Shaw is that when I watched his video interview on the Warrior athletic site is that he come in with full acknowledgment of all the people around him.

He begins by greeting the staff and personnel in the athletic department, which to me looks genuinely and warmly.

He talked to his players in a meeting, especially addressing the older players that he has to be sensitive to them because he’s their third coach in five years.

He admits that he has to learn the offense.

And he has to gain insight on what each player knows.

Teaching the players where blocking techniques and assignments are by reflex and not by “thinking” especially during the games is something he stresses.

My initial impressions of Coach Shaw is that he seems to be focused on the present, and looks to the future instead of trying to impress people on his resume or this and that “all-star” he’s coached. Extracting the most from his players, I sense , is better achieved when coaches don’t go around promoting themselves and having an essense of self love. And my initial impression of Coach Shaw is that he doesn’t, for he seems to be grounded into the moment, which I think in the long run is better for the players.

  82. Wayne O. March 19, 2009 12:00 pm

Pardon for being skeptical, but the offensive line last year stunk. Too many penalties, especially holding and personal fouls. That means lack of discipline, poor footwork and technique. Being strong is good, but that’s not everything. They also need cohesion on the line, proper technique, and be able to sustain their blocks. They should give a long good look to the guys who haven’t had a chance so far. Guys like Leonard, Hansen, Legay, etc. The offensive line is the key to having a successful season. Right now, I’m not convinced.

  83. Kekoa March 19, 2009 12:07 pm

ST ~ When will you be able to interview the line coaches on your show?

We all have concerns about the historicals regarding especially the O-line discipline and keeping a viable pocket of protection for the QB. I’d like to hear what the new guy has planned to get the guys on the same sheet of music.

I love it when a plan comes together!

Too bad coach Jones didn’t comeback like that, especially since he coached in the nfl.,oh well??..go figure.

  93. Pauoa Boy March 19, 2009 12:52 pm

    Wayne O,

To me lack of discipline has to do with coaching. I still remember last year when Kia blew off Coach Smith like nothing and Coach didn’t do jack. Hell no, if was me I would’ve been in his arse probably wouldn’t have let him played the rest of the game. Coach Smith is young and I’m glad Coach Shaw is here to help and fix things. We do have athletes on the line and with proper coaching could play at the next level. It starts at practice though, which at times when I’ve watched didn’t seem to have the intensity needed to get the boys motivated to play to the best of their abilities. All it comes down to is coaching and holding the players accountable for what they do and how they perform. If you slacking, then Coach gotta keep the PIMP hand strong and smack em into shape quick! We’ll see though, but I think we’ll see a huge improvement from last year. Plus with our schedule this year, the boys will have to prove themselves each game!

    mctruck,

I think Colt Brennan said it best when he mentioned that he is a system QB. Cause whatever system you put him in, he going perform and run it to perfection. Kind of like saying Peyton Manning is a system QB, cause he only know how to run the Indy system, ah c’mon gimme a break. Regardless I just waiting for Colt Brennan take over and prove errybody wrong. Hopefully he can come back to the islands and play in the Pro-Bowl someday. With the situation in Washington looks like it could be sooner than later. Figure they no extend Campbells contract, they not looking to pick up Cutler from the Broncos, Collins is ancient and I know they not looking for a QB in the draft with pick 13.

Re Bolla: I can’t believe it took this long to determine the finding of the allegation(s). I mean, how long does it take to find out if somebody kicked somebody. Seems like somebody was on Hawaiian time to me, which is to say, people were slow to take action. In any event, every minute, hour, day that goes by without resolution and probably a new head coach it cost us the fans, and revenue for the program in getting much needed quality recruits for the future. This women’s basketball program is in shambles and it’s just disgusting, not to mention losing close to a million dollars for the athletic department. Jim Donovan needs to do something real quick. RE: Jim Bolla

Interesting take from one poster at Sports Hawaii:

From “Duster” at Sports Hawaii on March 6, 2009:

“Even if Jim Bolla is exonerated (which seems doubtful), I don’t think he can effectively serve as the coach of the Wahine Basketball team anymore. Two investigations following complaints of player mistreatment spells the end of his tenure. The question, as many of you know, involves the handling of his departure.

He declined to resign. Thus, let’s look at other options. Many would like to have him terminated for cause. I can almost guarantee that there will be a lawsuit filed by Bolla. Otherwise, he will be unable to get a coaching job in the future with the black mark on his resume. Sure, you could have the UH Office of General Counsel handle the defense of UH, but depending on who is named as a defendant in the lawsuit and how the claims are asserted, the Office of General Counsel may not be able to represent all of the UH-related defendants (which could include a diverse group like the Board of Regents, Virginia Hinshaw, Jim Donovan, Marilyn Moniz-Kahoohanohano, etc., but not Herman Frazier) due to irreconciliable conflicts of interests. UH could be faced with hiring a number of outside attorneys to defend one or more UH-related defendant. As an example, look at the Daniel Smith case. It’s less contentious than a wrongful termination case, yet the Cades Schutte firm is representing Jeff Reinebold for his actions as a UH Football assistant coach, while the Office of General Counsel is representing UH, and Cades Schutte ain’t cheap. I am assuming that Cades, Schutte is being paid by UH and could be wrong on this, but my point is that there may be conflicts that prevent the Office of General Counsel from representing all defendants, so someone would foot the bill in the event of a conflict.

With respect to the notion that there will be a jury trial for a Bolla wrongful termination suit, I don’t think so. Suits against the State are exempt from jury trial. So there will not be 12 members of the community who will hear this. More importantly, though, Bolla’s contract may have an arbitration provision and enable the parties to resolve the dispute through binding arbitration. While viewed by many as a less expensive alternative to litigation in court, you still need attorneys to conduct discovery and present the case, plus you lose the right to appeal (and arbitrators do make mistakes) and the proceedings are typically not open to the public (which would annoy the heck out of the posters here). You still will incur litigation expenses, and while the chances of victory may be good, there is no such thing as a guarantee.

I still think a mutual termination with a negotiated payment of a portion of the balance of his contract would be the way to go. Maybe they’re trying to do that right now. It allows the parties to move on. You can guarantee that you will not put UH and its administrators/employees through the grind of litigation. It’s not only a financial toll, but a psychological toll that would be avoided. Who wants to be required to testify at a deposition, arbitration hearing or trial? Time would also be spent by UH personnel on litigation-related matter, which is really unproductive work. Don’t you want UHAD working on ways to maintain and improve athletics instead of be tied-down by gathering documents in response to a request for production of documents? Those who have been involved in litigation appreciate not being in litigation.

A second alternative may be to do what UNLV did to him before – reassign him to another job within the UHAD for the remaining term of his contract. I seem to recall that they tried to do that to Fred von Appen, whose “crime” was the result on the playing field and not for any misconduct. I think Fred and UH settled after that, but defer to you all who know UH athletics history far better than me. Who knows? Maybe a settlement can be reached after reassignment.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve actually been the player kicked in the rear for no good reason in front of my peers over 30 years ago, and I’m still angry about it. Nowadays, it is not considered discipline, and for good reason. Short of having a criminal complaint filed for assault and a conviction (which is a black and white basis for termination for cause according to Ferd Lewis’ analysis of Bolla’s contract), I believe that UH needs to carefully choose the path that it wishes to take, whatever it may be.”

I found the bolded statement interesting to say the least.

  133. homey ℞ March 19, 2009 3:32 pm

Kazz – Maybe UH was getting their ducks lined up correctly. That’s why it took so long to get the report to Bolla for his review. Now if UH did a thorough investigation and does have corroborating witnesses then…we’ll see.

  139. Kazz March 19, 2009 3:48 pm

    Homey,

It makes me sick to no end to already believe the program, in terms of this year’s recruiting class and the next is seriously crippled. Title 9 is the only thing keeping this program afloat. Bolla’s reputation in the past and his failures on the court were more than enough to hurt the Wahine players in the past and those currently on the roster.

I still have hope that the rumors of Shawna-Lei Kuehu attempting to join the Wahine can be a ray of sunlight in all of this. The recruiting must have already been effected. When is LOI day? A month from now? Maybe less. If ST hints could be “a few more weeks”, then there is no time to accomplish anything for Coach Charity or Coach Dallas Bolla.

I still think the Wahine have players that can play that will be returning next year. At times the Wahine showed that despite all this news around the program they can still pull off good performances to win games. If anything, next season, one thing for sure is that Jim Bolla will officially be gone from the program and they can have one full season to really come out of their shells and do what many believe those girls can do.

I’ll go ahead a predict a winning season next year on the court.

I haven’t seen Esme post anything about this here, but I saw her post about it on Facebook. Since I seem to get pretty good responses to fundraising, I thought I might as well post this once:

    http://www.marchforbabies.org/s_team_page.asp?seid=650823

Support the Mommies and their cause for the March of Dimes! I’m not sure if baby health has affected all of the bloggers as much as cancer, but I know I’ve been directly affected. I was born 10 weeks prematurely, and weighed 2 lb, 13 oz at birth. My Dad had already lost a newborn son from a previous marriage, and he later told me he was afraid that I wouldn’t make it, too. Well, nearly 22 years later, I’m still here! 🙂

Unfortunately, not every little boy or girl will survive that battle; and for some that do, health problems can follow. I was truly blessed to develop into a normal, healthy person, but not all do. Medicine has advanced to the point where we can treat premature births and other infant issues, but there’s still a lot of research to be done on why these things happen, and on how to reduce such occurrences. I’m sure Esme would support any help the Tsai-kos can give. And as a preemie myself, I’d appreciate it too! Mahalo! 🙂

    Blessing in disguise…

On a personal note, thank god for doctors who actually pay attention to what they do and not treat people as numbers.

Three weeks ago my dad was scheduled for hip replacement surgery. The day before, the surgeon called him and said there was an abormality in his EKG. I took my dad to his regular doctor the next day for another EKG – same reading, and it matched a reading from 2005. He’s ordered for a chemical stress test (since he can’t do the treadmill ‘cuz of the hip), and he fails it. Next, an echocardiogram which he passes (different from electrocardiogram/EKG) and he passes. Finally, this past Tuesday, he got an angiogram and 3 blockages (85%)were found. He had stents installed today, and gets released tomorrow. Hopefully, he’ll get his hip in four weeks.

The point is that he was healthy, never short of breath or had any indication of cardio problems. It just goes to show that every one of us needs to be diligent in regular check-ups, even if we feel great.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but hopefully it will shed some light that no matter how healthly you feel and appear, something can still be wrong.

After the first day of the tournament, I am kind of happy with my picks so far. 13 of 16 and the wrong picks I made, I didn’t have going past the 2nd round so don’t lose too much possible points. Tomorrow is another big day!!

  180. al ™ March 19, 2009 6:41 pm

well, the reason i asked about rich’s dad being a diabetic or not, is that quite commonly diabetics will not experience the normal symptoms of heart disease. one of the reasons is that they lose some ability to experience certain sensations, ie, chest pains, numbness, and the like.

but, rich is absolutely correct in that we all need to go and have regular checkups annually. most health plans cover these exams 100%. better to be able to prevent something than to defend against it. sort of like the game of football.

    sorry for the sobering message.

    …nuff said

    Rich,

“Dark Knight” was an excellent movie. Right up there with “The Watchmen”.

Honestly I was never into comics when I was a kid, but now I guess this is all catching up with me. Although, I think a lot of kids that were in the same theater watch “The Dark Knight” seemed to get bored real quick.

Several people also got up and left during “The Watchmen”. I guess it was too complicated for some people. It’s one of those movies that while it’s a comic book/graphic novel thing, you really need to grab a hold of the story from the beginning or you will not care anymore.

  197. Garret March 19, 2009 8:32 pm

Best wishes to Rich2176’s Dad. I’m glad that he was released today and remember how they discovered his problem by accident…it is a good thing he had such an observant doctor.

  198. Garret March 19, 2009 8:33 pm

Article in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel mentions the tough situation that Samson is in now that Miami gave a $30 million to the guy they picked to replace him at starting center. It also mentions the shoulder injury that ST has been telling us about.

Jake Grove vs. Samson Satele… for the starting center spot

There likely won’t be much of a battle here considering Grove was paid big bucks to serve as an upgrade for Satele, who struggled to generate much of a push at the center of the Dolphins’ offensive line. But Satele has played every game the past two seasons, which is something Grove hasn’t been able to do because of injuries. Could Satele prove he’s a Samoan warrior, becoming stronger, and hold onto his spot? It might be possible if shoulder issues was the real problem.

  199. Garret March 19, 2009 8:35 pm

If Samson doesn’t start at center, the coaching staff has said that he can compete for the starting RG spot. Trouble is, Miami already has 3 players competing for that spot–one guy started last season, one guy was drafted by the current management last year, and one guy was drafted in the 2nd round by the current management while they were in Dallas and Miami’s head coach was the OL coach there.

Donald Thomas vs. Joe Berger and/or Ike Ndukwe for the starting right guard spot

Dolphins czar Bill Parcells called Thomas, the team’s sixth-round pick last season, a “God send” because of the raw tools he showed off early last season, earning the starting right guard spot before suffering a foot injury in the season opener. Can Thomas pick up where he left off, or will the pack catch up to him. Ndukwe wasn’t special last season, but he was decent, and has gained an experience edge on Thomas courtesy of 16 starts. The Dolphins’ decision makers liked Berger enough to bring him here from Dallas, but the role he’ll play hasn’t been determined.

  200. Garret March 19, 2009 8:36 pm

Nice mention about Bess in their discussion of Ginn.

Davone Bess outperformed Ginn once he became a starter. Ginn caught 18 passes in Miami’s final six games while Bess, who caught 56 passes as an undrafted rookie, contributed 31 receptions during the same Camarillo-less span.

A private equity firm bought my local paper (San Diego Union-Tribune) and are looking to buy other newspapers because they feel the industry will be coming back when the economy improves. The paper they are rumored to be considering to buy next is the Austin American-Statesman, which I subscribed to for years.

The fact that some people with deep pockets want to invest in the newspaper industry is the first good news I’ve read about the newspaper industry in a long time…

Rich2176 aka MIA asked why does it take so long for HPD to arrest someone and indicted?

If the police does not observe the crime, they will not arrest. They will interview the witnesses and present the facts to the Prosecuting Attorney who will examine the facts and determine whether a valid charge can be made. They then will have to present it to a (grand) jury to determine if the facts justify them to return an indictment. At the point, there is an “order” of arrest from a legal entity and HPD can arrest him based on that order.

You could also have the person who was assaulted make a complaint through the prosecutor’s office who will make a determination as to the facts and then submit it to a judge who will issue a complaint and an order to the defendant to show up in court to answer the complaint. No arrest is made by HPD.

  211. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 19, 2009 8:57 pm

Ok. Amber Kaufman is my favorite player.

She had a service error, walks to the bench, gets handed a towel, and just throws it to the floor.

That is not “sulking” people, that is competitive fire and desire to win.

This season will ride on her leadership and emotion.

Too bad about JP Davis.. dang.. was expecting a break out year for him.

On the flip side of the coin, I ran into Jakeem Hawkins and his girl friend at Sam’s Club today. Absolutely beautiful couple. I spoke with them for just a few seconds but I felt like I wanted to spend the day with them both. While prepping for Pro Day, he seemed really optimistic and excited about getting another season with the Warriors.

With the defensive back positions open… Jakeem would be a huge plus for next season.

Ok…I have to admit, I did enjoy watching the game with jm2375 sitting with me and Pops. We did get a little excited at times, even when the scoreboard showed Nebraska as the winner.

ST ~ I thank you again for the tickets. jm2375 had to give her other ticket away. The people she gave it to were very cautious about taking it at no charge.
