Former Baldwin High football player Jordan Pu‘u Robinson has requested — and received — a release from his Washington State scholarship and is seeking to transfer to UH.

Robinson redshirted in 2009, missed the 2010 season after suffering a torn ACL, and played 10 games (starting against Stanford and Washington) in 2010.

If he transfers to UH, he would have two years to play one season. His eligibility clock could be extended if he receives a medical hardship for the 2010 injury or if he receives a special exemption because a family emergency requires his move.

Word on the boulevard is the volleyball Warriors will be receiving commitments from:

580w70agg9vmj87iAniefre Etim-Thomas, a 6-foot-4 middle blocker  from Long Beach City College. He can touch a gravity-defying 11 feet 7. Last year, he was second among California junior college players with a .497 hitting percentage. His 1.91 blocks per set were fourth best in the state.

Here’s his highlight video: EtimThomas.

maxMax Wechsung, a 6-7 setter/opposite from Long Beach City College. He was third in the state with 0.41 aces per set. The Vikings led the state in kills per set (13.14) and hitting percentage (.344).

komisarekGarrett Komisarek, a libero from Irvine Valley College. He was fifth in the state with 2.77 digs per set.

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

Hawaii is used to great volleyball. at all levels. leagues for 12 and under. great coaches in high schools. many years giving of themselves to coach the youth.

and you telling me we got no local recruits? must be a typo.

  19. Last Call May 12, 2012 5:24 am

Really depressed this morning after watching the poor performance of the softball team in Las Cruces.

I guess they just didn’t want it as badly as the other guys.

  20. Homegrown May 12, 2012 5:34 am

CONGRATULATIONS! to waiakea for winning the state tourney .That Torres-Costa kid put on one hell of show…good news is hes committed to UH

  21. kapakahi May 12, 2012 5:38 am

Congrats to undefeated D1 MBB Champs Waiakea…..very poised and talented….already with 3 UH commits (P Torres-Costa, P Kodi Medeiros, and C/Ath Kean Wong – Kolten’s younger bro).

  22. kapakahi May 12, 2012 6:05 am

Oops! Forgot 4th UH commit from Waiakea….Kodi’s older brother 3B Korin Medeiros.

    Just so that people don’t forget that…..Glenn Goya’s 9 inning masterful performance in 1972 wasn’t just a no-hitter….but also a perfect game….

  24. Kaimiloa May 12, 2012 6:21 am

Congrats to our Big Island boys. Champions! Congrats to Waipahu, too. It takes a certain kind of magic to get through a single elimination tournament. One question though… How does a school of 2500 students qualify to be Div. II? Didn’t they get the memo that a team from Kaua’i is supposed to win DII every year? Congrats to all.

  25. whitey May 12, 2012 6:21 am

Good morning Tsaiko. Did you vote???? I did. Go Steph.

  26. Garret May 12, 2012 6:24 am

Just caught up with the blog, nice to read all the comments and catch up with the news. I know I’m really behind but it was great to read the news about how new entrants (like SDSU) to the Big West won’t get travel subsidies from UH. It would be really good for the MWC to follow that, as paying Utah State, SJSU, and whoever else is added wouldn’t be good for UH. UH agreed to pay for schools like Boise State, SDSU, Air Force and the rest of the MWC schools at that time to fly to UH…not schools like Utah State and SJSU.

Unfortunately, the MWC set a bad precedent for UH when they so quickly told the Star-Advertiser that UH would be paying travel subsidies to CUSA schools if the MWC merged with CUSA. But maybe things are different enough now and Utah State/SJSU desperate enough now that UH can get them to waive subsidies.

  27. Garret May 12, 2012 6:25 am

Interesting to see what the budgets are at the MWC schools. One big reason why the MWC was pulling ahead of the WAC over the years is that their schools spent more on athletics–over time, prioritizing athletics made a difference.

According to USA Today’s latest college athletic budget estimates, the Aggies are dwarfed by conference leaders UNLV ($59 million) and New Mexico ($37 million). USU’s former Western Athletic Conference peers, Fresno State ($26.6 million), Hawaii ($34.9 million) and Nevada ($23.9 million), all have bigger budgets as they move into the MWC this year. Only fellow MWC newcomer San Jose State ($21 million) is in the Aggies’ ballpark.

  28. 808Bowler May 12, 2012 6:26 am

Congrats to my alma mater Waipahu Marauders!!!

    Also to Waikea.

  29. Garret May 12, 2012 6:27 am

Before anyone goes crazy over the UNLV budget numbers, UNLV’s numbers include all of the operating expenses for the T&M center…all concerts, special events, etc. have their expenses and revenue lumped in with athletics.

Las Vegas newspapers clarified last year what UNLV actually spent on Athletics…and it was quite a bit *less* than UH.

  30. Garret May 12, 2012 6:29 am

When looking at Boise State’s Athletic Budget numbers, one thing to keep in mind is that their athletic department pays for their facility upgrades and maintenance, which can be a huge number. UH’s budget numbers do *not* include facility upgrades.

The latest budget numbers I saw (thanks to Wassupdoc) is that the Leg approved $12.5 mil for UH athletic facilities for the upcoming fiscal year. Other schools like UNLV (and I think New Mexico and many others) have that facility spending included in their numbers that are reported.

  31. Garret May 12, 2012 6:32 am

Note on the ACC getting $4 mil/year more per school with their new TV deal. Technically, the ACC’s TV deal is more than the SEC’s TV deal…but the SEC will be getting a big raise since they expanded and triggered the renegotiation.

The ACC contract is worth $17.1 million per school per year, an increase of $4 million . That’s $5 million less than the $20 million per year deals signed by the Big 12 and the Pac 12. It is $5 million less than the Big Ten. The SEC has a $16.7 million per year, though that deal will be improved with the additions of Texas A&M and Missouri.

    http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2012/05/09/acc-signs-15-year-3-6-billion-tv-deal-with-espn/

  32. Garret May 12, 2012 6:35 am

The increase in TV rights revenue is a positive for the MWC when it comes time for renegotiation. One negative is that the big conferences are expanding and filling more TV time slots–ESPN for example has a *lot* of their TV time slots committed already to the Big 10, Pac-12, and Big 12. That provides windows of TV time in less valuable times (Fridays, Thursdays, etc.), and the Pac-12 already agreed to take many of the WAC’s previous Friday time slots.

  33. Hilo Moon May 12, 2012 6:42 am

    re: travel subsidies

Does UH get travel subsidies from other teams?

  34. whitey May 12, 2012 6:44 am

    Welcome back Garret

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid May 12, 2012 6:49 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Grats to the Big Island Kids!

Good luck to our Wahine softballers. Let’s pray for fair selection on Sunday.

Nice to see your posts Garret!

  36. mctruck May 12, 2012 7:20 am

Aloha, Garret!!….imagine getting $20mil a year for consecutive yrs. what to do with all dat money!?..and dats per school in the Big12/10?

  37. mctruck May 12, 2012 7:20 am

    13 consecutive yrs.

  38. Haleakala May 12, 2012 7:21 am

Good info Garret on athletic expenditures. I’m glad that the legislature approved money for facility improvements. It’s an investment that will have a return.

  39. Kevin May 12, 2012 7:29 am

Hope Im not creating anymore white noise, but I don’t care. This is not for me.

“All our fans, friends, and families- they’re sending us back to the island even though we should be getting a bid and most likely will NOT be hosting. This means extra travel, exhaustion, and unnecessary accommodations…. How can we prevent this from happening? We’ve worked too hard and too long this season for them to hinder our chances like this… HELP.”

Say what you want, but if you don’t care or if you don’t think this is just then fine.

It is tremendously irresponsible to send a team that will get a bid back home and then fly them back out again. A few days later.

A waste of the University’s money (i.e. a waste of your tax dollars) and a further drain on the student-athletes as it already is.

Make your jokes, make your remarks.

    Whatever.

    pau.

Anyone wants to discuss my continued irritation, you can come see me in person in the fall, you know where.

  40. BG May 12, 2012 7:44 am

Good morning everyone! It is a spectacular start to the day! Yesterday turned out to be…well…forgettable for Na Wahine. But, no forget, “success” is often defined as getting up one more time than you’re knocked down. Imua!

Wafan, still working on your “short calendar” each day? The excitement builds!

Kapakahi…you get one mean memory! Do you compete in the sports trivia contests with BC? Not many folks would have remembered Goya’s perfect game and the number that Pisa wore with the Rams…awesome!

  41. BG May 12, 2012 7:54 am

I don’t believe that Lynn(sp?) is 808Bowler so I’ll assume there’s another Marauder in the house! Of course, when I attended, WHS was at the other end of town, cane soot flavored our lunches, and the Moonglow Lounge was across the street and one bus stop down the road. 😀

  42. BG May 12, 2012 7:56 am

Welcome back Garret! We missed you! I hope mom and dad are doing well.

  43. kapakahi May 12, 2012 8:04 am

Funny how I can’t remember people’s names….right after I being introduced to them….BUT can still remember all this sports stuff without even thinking twice about it.

BTW probably the main reason I remember Glenn Goya’s perfect game is cuz I was one of those 2,500 that I watched that one live.

Also happen to collect cards for UH players that make it to the NFL….including a few of Pisa’s Ram cards.

  44. Slugger May 12, 2012 8:11 am

    Ok Morning from UH graduation!

Got to see ST @ da Letterwinners office with some of the students.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JORI JASPER!

  45. tommui May 12, 2012 8:13 am

#13 WAFAN: Might take me about six-seven hours to get there. Will the scones still be available (and warm, and fresh?)

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Good morning AL – hope your Sat nap is good – considering your late hour.

Na Wahine – very proud of you. Keep fighting!

  46. kapakahi May 12, 2012 8:15 am

    Player’s numbers….now that’s something I always seem to remember…..for no good reason.

Like for Mosi Tatupu….44 for Punahou….36 for USC….then 30 for Patriots.

    Hmmmm…..

  47. Slugger May 12, 2012 8:16 am

    Kevin,

How much has the Na Wahine booster club raised? Could that be used for accommodations?

  48. el burro sabio May 12, 2012 8:30 am

    Kapakahi,

Ferd’s story is wrong. Korin Medeiros did not get an offer.

  49. BG May 12, 2012 8:41 am

However you remember da stuff, I’m proud that someone in our age bracket can still do li’ dat. Slugger suggested some herbs to improve my failing memory…but, I gotta remember to take it! 😀

  50. BG May 12, 2012 8:43 am

Slugger, sorry I missed your call. I’ll try to call you in the afternoon.

    BG

As we wish the graduates well in their future endeavors…

…we should offer encouragement to papajoe2. who re-entered the real world today in San Diego after his 16-night Panama Canal cruise. 😐

Segue to… I have updated the cruise prices on those possible after the UH-USC and UH-SDSU games (sailing out of Long Beach and San Diego). Also the package tour offerings. Of course, this is Tsai-ko logistics and gathering planning page, so please email me if you are attending any games and/or cruises…

  106. Stephen Tsai May 12, 2012 6:07 pm

    OK, OK. I’m awake.

Yep, Robinson has received his release and he has contacted UH about the possibility of transferring.

There apparently are a couple of hurdles still to be cleared.

If he goes to UH, he would have to redshirt this season, leaving him with one season to play. His clock could be extended if he gets a medical hardship for 2010 ACL injury or is granted a special exemption if a family emergency necessitated his transfer.

But he is a very, very good player.

  127. Shoko May 13, 2012 4:46 am

    Morning folks!

Congrats to those who graduated! For those undergraduates, its time to make that decision of getting a job or pursue a graduate degree to make yourself more marketable. Sadly, it seems a four-year degree is not enough by todays standard due to the competitive job market.

Just remember, it only works so long prolonging employment before your parents say to you, “Get a job you bum!” 😉

    Happy Mothers Day!

  128. mctruck May 13, 2012 4:55 am

The evolving landscape changes in college football; now, although according to this article I’m reading in my sports page section here in Texas…..and although they(Florida State) have not been discussed for inclussion in the Big12…..that’s the desire of FSU moving foward. Getting to be like trading baseball-cards.

  129. mctruck May 13, 2012 5:01 am

#132….and imagine there are millionaires/billionaires out there who’ve not graduated college with a four-year-degree?

Sometimes, all it takes is having a great idea and acting on it.

  130. BigHiloFan2 May 13, 2012 5:41 am

    mctruck

your comments got me thinking about Coach Rolo and UNR.

the Reno Nevada newspaper sports section today said.

    Related Links

UNR donations: Donors a priority ahead of MWC move

Two months ago, Reno Gazette-Journal reporter Chris Murray set out to determine how the Wolf Pack athletic department compared to other schools in the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences in fundraising.

Using the Freedom of Information Act, the RGJ requested the 990 tax filings of each MWC/WAC school over the past four fiscal years. We received forms from four of the 15 athletic departments. The others said they don’t file 990 forms or file them jointly with the academic wings of the university, which would mean athletics donations were lumped into the general donation field on the 990.

We also obtained the revenue reports each school must send to the NCAA, which includes donation contributions in each fiscal year. However, those numbers can conflict with the 990s. For example, the Wolf Pack was deeded Legacy Hall in 2007, which was listed as a gift. As a result, Nevada’s listed contributions for donations in 2007 exceeded $10 million on the revenue report. The actual figure was just less than $6 million.

“This is one thing that just drives me crazy,” said Jane Tors, UNR’s special assistant to the president for media relations. “This is something that we see in graduation rates all the time. One school will calculate it one way and another will calculate it another way, and when you try to compare the numbers, you’re using different scales of measurement.”

Using a combination of the forms and additional financial data and discussions with each school in the MWC/WAC, the RGJ was able to verify numbers for eight schools in the conferences. The Pack ranks third in donations culled over the past four fiscal years.

hmmm… wonder if JD will get some ideas about seeing where UHM stacks up.

  131. Shoko May 13, 2012 5:44 am

Yep, times are different when those millionaires/billionaires had that opportunity to generate enormous wealth. And like you said, it takes an innovative and great idea to get a jumpstart on corning the market. For example, the dot.com era, until it crashed of course. Sometimes you got to get out when the going is good.

  132. BigHiloFan2 May 13, 2012 5:49 am

    more from Reno

UNR donations: Development staff key players

    10:28 PM, May. 12, 2012 | Comments

AA Tara Hawkins / Siobhan McAndrew

    Written by Chris Murray

A person-by-person look at those who work to raise funds for Wolf Pack athletics.

    Marc Johnson

    Position: UNR president

Role: Johnson said the college president has an important role for all departments on campus. He said donors would be reluctant to give money if they did not see a president who aggressively pushed athletics. As a result, Johnson often speaks of the importance of athletics and attends Wolf Pack events.

    Cary Groth

    Position: Wolf Pack athletics director

Role: As the head of the Nevada athletic department, Groth is one of the most visible faces in the community for Pack athletics. In addition to stumping for donations, it is her job to ensure the Pack’s programs are successful. After all, people like donating to winning programs more than losing ones.

    Joe Bradley

    Position: AAUN president

Role: The AAUN is an advisory board for Wolf Pack athletics. Bradley, a lawyer in Reno, has been the board’s president for the past three years. His role in fundraising is connecting with big businesses in the community and stressing the importance of giving to the department.

    Rory Hickok

    Position: Senior associate athletic director

Role: Among other things, Hickok is in charge of the Wolf Pack’s development staff. With senior associate athletic director Keith Hackett, Hickok also is in charge of outlining capital gains improvements. He has helped build a plan for a future Mackay Stadium seat renovation and two indoor practice facilities.

    Tara Hawkins

    Position: Director of Annual Giving

Role: This is a leadership and management position. Hawkins is responsible for the strategic execution of a comprehensive giving program, which includes data management, creating a matrix of communication and maintaining donor relations. One of Nevada’s main focuses is growing its donor base.

    Robyn Sharp

    Position: Director of Development

Role: Hired in March, Sharp will have dual roles between academics and athletics. She also supports the UNR Foundation, which is the university’s central development arm. Sharp, a former player, coach and administrator at Oregon State, has 26 years of fundraising experience.

    Jeff Rowe

    Position: Annual Giving Coordinator

Role: Hired last month, Rowe’s main charge is to identify and increase annual donations to the Pack Educational Fund and The Blitz, the football fundraising unit. The ex-Nevada quarterback also will work with the newly established Wolf Pack Varsity Club, which tries to cull donations from former Pack student-athletes.

    Jerry Cail

    Position: Assistant Director of Development

Role: Cail’s main charge has been to improve the quality of the experience at Wolf Pack events. Cail helped introduce the family section at Mackay Stadium. He also introduced the Wolf Pack ambassador program. Another focus for Cail is selling season tickets to individuals and businesses.

    Heather PenningtonPosition:

    Director of Special Events

Role: Pennington coordinates the Wolf Pack’s special events, which include the Governor’s Dinner, the Bobby Dolan Dinner, the Blue Tie Ball and various events for booster programs like The Starting Five (men’s basketball), The Blitz (football) and Center Court (women’s basketball). The Blue Tie Ball has been especially popular, raising $100,000 toward scholarships this past year.

i know some of the names of players at UHM who perform what i suspect are related tasks, but not all or their job functions. maybe an idea for a future big spread at the HSA. would be nice to know the numbers first.

  133. Shoko May 13, 2012 5:50 am

Pretty sure UH gets bigger donations than UNR. I base this on that fact that UNR’s athletic budget is a less than UH’s.

Speaking of Rolo, I was in Reno last weekend and was pulling into the safeway parking lot and thought I saw him pushing a cart. Couldn’e be sure tho.

  134. BigHiloFan2 May 13, 2012 5:54 am

of course, Reno got gaming (and sex).

    Hawaii? hmm…

    like da comic friend’s said,

“wat, sunshine an fresh air no nuff?”

  135. Shoko May 13, 2012 5:58 am

Yea, Bradley is very proactive among the business community. The guy has his own show on the weekends. The interesting thing about Reno is the gaming industry. One would think the local casinos would be huge doners to UNR athletics. I mean to an extent they are, but they could donate more.
