Volleyball Warriors open training camp

The volleyball Warriors hit the road — er, the air — to open training camp for the 2016 season.

The Warriors are working out on Maui for three days.

They play an exhibition against SportsConX in the Stan Sheriff Center next Monday.

They open the season against King in the opening round of the three-day Outrigger Hotels Invitational on Jan. 7.

Hmm. Volleyball in the Warrior World Football blog? Anyway, looking forward to watching the UH men’s volleyball team this year.

  2. Duster December 28, 2015 10:26 am

I guess the WB blog will be updated as soon as the DC and/or other assistants are announced.

  3. C-Pop December 28, 2015 10:38 am

Kevin Lempa returns to UH as DC ?

  4. jm2375 December 28, 2015 10:39 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Duster – if you didn’t already know, ST is the MVB beat writer.

T-minus 1 week until the first MVB game!! Woohoo!

  5. waikapu December 28, 2015 10:59 am

Wasn’t Lempa the DC when we were 0-12?

  6. H-Man December 28, 2015 11:24 am

In 1998 when UH went 0-12 under HC Fred von Appen, the DC was Tom Williams. June Jones took over in 1999. His DC was Greg McMackin.

  7. al December 28, 2015 11:27 am

Lempa was DC in 2001(9-3) and 2002(10-4).

  8. Warrior nation December 28, 2015 11:29 am

Hope Vavae Tata is named the DC. Has PAC 12 experience and SEC . Did great with Kahuku in one year… He’ll be a great addition to our staff. Definitely will help in recruiting as well..

  9. Rodney December 28, 2015 11:43 am

    Lets Rolo!!!!!
    Bring home the new DC!!
    Bringing home Rolo!!!!!

  10. 3-Prong December 28, 2015 11:48 am

Are there any new “players to watch” with size as outside hitters or middles?

  11. Derek December 28, 2015 11:50 am

Speculation! Rolo is not listening to our choices so why bother. Just patiently wait Hawaii. Announcement coming soon enough.

  12. A-House December 28, 2015 11:53 am

disappointed in the SA editorial page where “they” claim NCAA sanctions will “wreak havoc” with recruiting – did I miss something as both early commitments have solidified their commitment to UH and a 3rd has committed – and “ability to keep current players” — I don’t recall any “junior” saying they will transfer for their senior year — did I miss something here? their only comment, publicly is to “focus” on 2015-16 season — anyone hear other wise?

IMHO, the player “solidifies” his game during the entire year; not in post-games.

  13. A-House December 28, 2015 11:55 am

    SteveM;

would like to go and see kangaroos

  14. BigWave96744 December 28, 2015 12:03 pm

Tata was hired in Jan 2014 by Vandy, but fired 2 months later. Don’t know if you consider that a lot of SEC experience, no?

  15. BigFan December 28, 2015 12:10 pm

#14, Why was he fired? I vaguely remember someone from Hawaii being fired. Was it for DUI?

  16. BigFan December 28, 2015 12:30 pm

#10, Patrick Gasman MB/Opposite comes in with great credentials but I believe he might be hurt and forced to sit out. Great recruiting class though.

  17. Old School Dave December 28, 2015 12:50 pm

The way stuff happens: Vae Tata was named d-line coach under new Vandy HC Derek Mason (worked together at Stanford). Tata got fired after his DUI two months into the job at Vandy. Utah State D-line coach Frank Maile was hired to replace Tata. In turn, Utah State hired Ikaika Malloe as Maile’s replacement coming over from Portland State. Malloe was recently hired by Chris Peterson at UW after two productive seasons at USU as their d-line coach. Malloe is likely receiving a hefty salary increase with the Huskies. Just speculating, but I suspect that Malloe was being courted by Coach Rolovich (they both served on Mac’s staff in 2008) as UH’s DC, before UW came into the picture.

Ahi prices (sashimi) might be “reasonable” due to the supply, this year. Gotta head down to Tamashiro’s.

  18. MAKA December 28, 2015 12:51 pm

If you type in his name in Google and Vandy, there will be a record of his infractions. He was also on the staff at Stanford according some articles there.

  19. oneseason December 28, 2015 12:53 pm

It’s great to see nationally ranked UH teams playing at the SSC.

  20. kev-1 December 28, 2015 12:53 pm

Iosefa just got released by the Pats. Bummer. Hope he gets another look.

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid December 28, 2015 1:00 pm

Men’s Vball! Woohoo! Should be a fun season – Kupono Fey and company.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  22. 3-Prong December 28, 2015 1:00 pm

    …bummers is right.

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid December 28, 2015 1:15 pm

I third that bummer. It seems like the coaches look for reasons to release Hawai’i players. Hope Joey plays somewhere, soon. Back to hating the Patriots, I guess.

  24. BigFan December 28, 2015 1:40 pm

#17, OSD, thanks for that info.

  25. tempmanoa December 28, 2015 2:02 pm

I think it is a dream of guys like Ikaika Malloe and Salave’a to get hired by a Pac 12 team, more than double their salary, and get the big bucks. Salave’a is getting $325,000 a year at Washington State. Someone like Malloe who was interested in a position here with Rolo, but with two young kids, he has to think of what he can earn for his family.

  26. graham December 28, 2015 2:11 pm

I’d bet that Lempa is named DC. Tata would be great but I do not think he is being considered. I dont know if he is not intertested or Rolo isnt interested due to his off the field baggage. Lempa is a good coach though

  27. Old School Dave December 28, 2015 2:18 pm

More power to coaches like Ikaika Malloe. Coming home is nice, but as you said, he has a family to provide for and take care of. Having an opportunity to coach in the Pac-12, earning a P-5 school salary, and to do it at his alma mater, is too good of a deal to pass up, and they often don’t come up again. There are no shortage of resources at UW. RBs coach and former UH player Keith Bhonapha is also at UW.

Regarding “coming home’ for locals, sometimes it’s easier said than done. I’m sure the former Sumo Wrestlers, Akebono, Konishiki, and Musashimaru would also like to “come home” to Hawaii, but for their situations, Japan offers more to them, even in retirement that they could not achieve here.

I am wondering if we might see Dave Aranda move out West, either to USC or Oregon State?

  28. Old School Dave December 28, 2015 2:27 pm

Speaking of Dave Aranda, Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez says that he’s not worried about losing him because of a higher salary offered at other schools.

  29. islandman December 28, 2015 2:28 pm

“Hawaii: Boston College defensive backs coach Kevin Lempa is the lead candidate for the Hawaii defensive coordinator position, per sources. Lempa previously served as defensive coordinator at Hawaii from 2000 – 2002.”

  30. jm2375 December 28, 2015 4:09 pm

3-prong – #10 – look for Hendrik Mol and Iain McKellar to play bigger roles this year. Other than that, there’s so many newcomers (11), you’ll have to ask ST or one of the coaches. 😀 Patrick Gasman, is redshirting this year since he broke his leg prior to or at the beginning of fall camp.

  31. A-House December 28, 2015 6:53 pm

    jm2375:

is Gasman one of the 3 national team players who signed with UH last year?

is he the 6′ 10″ outside hitter?

  32. Tempmanoa December 28, 2015 7:09 pm

Someone on the Scout Warrior Sports Network board spotted Ashley Lelie in town– maybe for vacation time. Naturally, however, there is speculation on whether Lelie is here in connection with the WR coach position. An article by a Nevada reporter on Lelie and how Poilan and Rolovich liked him and his work at Nevada is linked on the Warrior Sports Network board. I would be happy to have him if he is Rolo’s choice.

  33. rayson December 28, 2015 8:04 pm

    31. No Gasman is a middle. I think you’re thinking of Stijn van Tilburg the guy from the Netherlands who’s apparently the front runner for Opposite.

  34. al December 28, 2015 8:39 pm

Re: MVB, I am concerned about who plays middle this year. Injuries have taken its toll. I heard Franscovic (S) was working out at MH.

  35. 3-Prong December 28, 2015 8:54 pm

jm2375 and rayson: Thanks for the scoops. Hope this team can mesh together quickly. Looking forward to it.

  36. rundown808 December 28, 2015 11:59 pm

Ok, the wait is KILLIN ME! Saving the best for last maybe. Lol. WHo the next WR coac Who dat? Who dat? Who dat? The suspense is killing me. Been pretty quiet too. And if I’m not mistaken ST. Are you throwing in the non football related articles just to add to the suspense. Lol. Ok ok ok already. I sit and ponder the thought. But hurry up already. Let’s gets this party started right!!!!

Mike Among is the only men’s volleyball player to play hoops.

    This is his stats.

    1987-88: 10 games, 1.1. pts. 0.6. reb., assists/TO ratio 1-1

    Let’s hope it’s the last.

I suspect if Hawaii makes the NCAAs, some of the players will stick around next season.

    Hawaii’s RPI is 56.

That’s going to change: Mississippi Valley State(329)
    Howard(241)

  39. cappie the dog December 29, 2015 5:43 am

Hawaii is ranked #24 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll.

We are lodged between Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Grand Canyon.

Hawaii just beat Bruce Pearl, who coached at Milwaukee, so that’s a mildly interesting coincidence.

Wasn’t any of the writers or coaches watching our games on the ESPN family of networks?

    I thought we’d get a vote.

  40. azwarrior22 December 29, 2015 6:08 am

Grand Canyon is a small, private university, that is coached by ex-Suns Dan Majerle. They are more like an FCS team, not mid-major. They do not have a football team.

  41. el burro sabio December 29, 2015 7:39 am

Cappie, had one guy who’s name escapes me that went the other direction. He walked on to one of Riley’s basketball teams and eventually became a MB for Wilton.

  42. cappie the dog December 29, 2015 8:06 am

el burro sabio-That would make a great Bobby Curran trivia question.

Do you ever listen to his show and start yelling at the radio when the listeners can’t answer a question you deem easy?

Like one morning, two seasons ago, nobody could get the name of the current Oregon football head coach. I understand that Mark Helfrich isn’t a household name like Chip Kelly, but a certain ex-St. Louis was a Duck.

This is me behind the wheel passing Patsy Mink Regional Park: ” Mark Helfrich! Mark Helfrich!! MARK HELFRICH!!!”
