Volleyball Warriors land Punahou outside hitter
The football Warriors aren’t the only UH team having a successful recruiting week.
The volleyball Warriors landed one of the state’s top players — Punahou outside hitter Kupono Fey.
He’s 6-5, athletic and comes from a good bloodline. His grandfather was Harry “Clown” Kahuanui, the first UH football player to compete in a collegiate all-star game. His bio can be found in UH’s Circle of Honor. Fey’s mother is Shelley Fey, a long-time basketball coach who is now Punahou’s chair of the physical education department.
Kupono Fey spent the summer competing on USA Volleyball’s Youth National team.
“He’s big, he’s physical, he’s a great coachable kid,” Punahou coach Rick Tune said.
This is a significant get for the volleyball Warriors, who have seen more than their share of ILH players head to the mainland. Credit Charlie Wade, Jeff Hall and new assistant Sean Carney for trying to keep the top local players home.

Congrats to all the student athletes who graduate this weekend…
I wonder if there are any Footbal players who graduated and will seek to transfer to another school for graduate studies and Playing Time..
is fey going to be the first punahou vballer since rick tune?
Wonder if there are any JC guys who get their AA this weekend and are ready to join the Warriors as a scholie or walkon in January
Al:
I think there was a middle blocker a few years ago. But he only lasted a season.
This is a significant commitment.
BigWave:
When all is said and done, there are going to be enough things happening to quell even the grumpiest of UH fans.
Keali‘i Frank was the last Punahou recruit.
Stephen, I have no doubt…. I think I could roll in the dough by raising crows, because may will need them for dinner before it’s all said and done
Welcome vballer Kupono Fey!
g’nite!
hopefully this punahou pick up along with Higgins and Manu-olevao does open the floodgates.
Hi Fey!!!

Hoooooooo hoooooo!!! “UH AThlete: The Next Generation.” His mother is what? Is he allowed to have any junk food? Heh, no matter. They related to Tina?
WELCOME, Mr. Fey!!!!!!!!
al, BigWave96744, SteveM, K-Bay . . . and Mr. Stephen Tsai, thanks for waking up early!
Ohayoooooooooooogozaimasu to all!
Good Morning Folks! Welcome to MVB Kupono Fey!
Morning Mr. Grease!
Have a great weekend! Hi Ho!
Wow….that is exciting news!! Congrats, Coach Wade and staff!
Top 20!!!!! Um. Again. Today. Yeah. S’matter? Too much partying last night those not posting yet? 🙂
mo808 and PowderPuff . . . good morning and thanks for waking up early!!!!!
mo808 — have a great weekend, too, with you and yours. You folks deserve it!
Think this lull between posts is longer than mail delivery to Fukushima after the ‘quake and wave. Somebody call the Guinness book folk! 🙂
Good morning, gang!
Congrats, Kupono Fey! See you on the court.
Getting ready to head to UH graduation… my nephew and “nieces & nephews” are graduating!
Laters.
FINALLY!!! Good to see a local boy stay home once in awhile to play some VBall.
Would’ve been nice if Kupono’s cousin Micah Christenson had stayed home too.
Nice!! I keep sayin’…bust out ‘dem shades!!!
An All State Punahou athlete to UH? The world must be coming to an end in a few weeks…lol.
#6. ST,
No doubt the recruiting effort is more organized, consistent and persistent…..especially with local HS recruiting.
Would be nice if Warriors can land a JC DT transfer…..now that looking like Moala will need more time before transferring.
BUT also hoping that Coach isn’t relying too much on JC transfers…..like Mack did in with the 2008 recruiting class (when 11 of 22 signees were JC transfers, of whom only 3 ever became regular starters – Alexander, Bryant, Taylor).
You mentioned bloodlines but left out Auntie Kelly Fey, a dominant paddler who owned the Molokai to Oahu women’s kayak event for 5 or 6 years running. A truly incredible athletic family on both mom and dad’s side.
So great to have our own stay home.
#29,
Good one!
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Welcome Kupono Fey!
I’ve received information about the 2012 Capital Improvements budget allocations for the University of Hawai`i at Manoa’s Department of Athletics:
$12, 500,000:PLANS, DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION FOR IMPROVEMENS TO ATHLETIC FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA CAMPUS, GROUND AND SITE IMPROVEMENTS; EQUIPMENT AND APPURTENANCES
The Governor released the funds on August 15th.
However, I’ve not been able to get anyone either in the UHAD or in the Chacellor’s Office to provide any information as to what the money will be used for.
NOTE: The Ching Field improvements were funded in 2011.
Anyone here have information on where the current years funding will be allocated.
Nevada making swiss cheese out of Arizona. Good job Nick. 21-0 in the first.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Welcome Kupono! Great athletic legacy on both sides of his family – he and cousin Micah are keeping that tradition going.
ST- it often seems that we ʻre-recruitʻ local boys who initially choose mainland schools but wish to come back home- any on the horizon this year? Or does NC not really push this like Coach Mac?
Congrats to Kupono!
Spoke with a family member and they are STOKED they get to see him play. Season ticket sales just went up x 100! The family is very proud of Kupono!
Hope Nainoa inks also…and looking ahead, Tui would like nice in a Warrior Volleyball AND Football jersey!
As fans, we should celebrate, honor and put the local players who stay home up on a pedestal. Support them through and through, during and after their careers. If we want them to make a difference, we have to let them know why it’s special. It’s a powerful difference, so let’s help ourselves and make a difference. SUPPORT, SUPPORT, SUPPORT!
Go Warriors!
Go Wahine!
WOW!
Refreshing to see a Punahou VB player committ to UH. Congrats Charlie Wade and company.
I was beginning to think “Don’t ever to UH” was a 4th period class at Punahou.
Bottom line is that UH athletics is going to have to become more self-sufficient in generating revenue, fundraising, and attracting wealthy donors. There has to be less of a reliance on tax-payers money. You have to keep in mind that a lot of the general public here in Hawaii doesn’t support or have any connection or interest in UH/Athletics for many reasons (transplants, attended university on the mainland, kids attended mainland schools, casual fans at best, or simply not interested in sports in general).
Although I am not much of a mens volleyball fan, it is nice to see local boys play for the home team regardless of the sport. Welcome young man.
Good morning everyone!
Congratulations to the UH graduates today!
The Punahou Mafia hits again. Now, if Isaac S. changes his mind that would be huge. Also, Chow probably also offered a scholarship to Kanawai Noa. Unfortunately, Noa is still only a sophomore.
Mr. Joe Mathis, I hope you are enjoying our Hawaii weather, scenery, and your stay on your recruiting visit. We need you. Badly. What’s your major?
More photos of Warrior football graduates:

Jus lemme know if we add Etuale or Mathis or both……I’ll be checking in throughout the day for an early Christmas present. If we get either or both I promise not to be greedy and ask for anything more Santa….

Na Koa Mike – thanks for the pictures.
Congrats to Kupono and all the graduates.
……….has the “ship sailed” on Falyn after playing pro beach or is there a sliver of hope to get her on the team? With FF we could be a FF (Final Four) Team.
Congrats to everyone who graduated!
Good morning Tsaikos!
Congrats to all the graduates and best wishes as you journey on to your next phase in life.
Welcome Kupono Fey!
IWWTHM, Why are they renovating the lockers and coaches locker and training room if they are building new ones?
Winning off the field is the most important achievement of any student athlete.
Congratulations graduates.
In case the picture was too tiny to see, Alema Tachibana, Jordan Gomes, Jordan Monico and Levi Legay were in the group picture.
papajoe,
The building of a new locker/training facility is for football only. Gotta upgrade da buggah so we can start partying like it was 1995.
Darius Bright said he had an achilles’ injury that kept him from playing after the Boise game. He plans to train with Chad Ikei.
Chow is helping Legay land a job.
Sorry, forgot to add that the new locker/training facility for football is envisioned as a brand new building for football only.
ST,
How does Chow look in his graduation ceremony clothes? Any pics?
Yes,Yes, congratulations to all the Warrior graduates. Falemanu, Bright, Gomes, Hanohano, Legay, Clapp, etc.
RE: #43 & 53
$2 mil for design only. So, if and when it ever gets built, we are looking at 5-6 years down the road? More?
I always feel like a proud Aunty of these students!
Go Warriors!
Terrance Bell also graduated, but he’s not walking today.
It’s so nice to see the families of the students at graduation.
The student athletes just scored their most important goal…graduation. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACHIEVEMENT
Good morning Tsaikos!
ST…mahalo for the on-the-spot reporting on the recruiting efforts in multi-sports. The holidays seem brighter with the encouraging results.
The women’s locker rooms are already gutted out heavily. Supposed to be completed this upcoming 2013. Not sure when. I’ve heard June and I have heard as early as early spring. So not too sure, but a few weeks ago, I did see heavy construction work taking place.
Those monies were allocated years ago for the sum of a little over $2 million. That was a Title IX thing that needed to be taken care of a long long long long time ago.
Finally they will have 21st century lockers and not the rusted moldy 12″x19″ things with the individual pad locks that kept getting broken into…
Also, I believe a current corporate sponsor of UH is also assisting with furnishing the locker rooms.
Congrats to a pair of 1st base players.
Redshirt junior Jori Jasper completed her degree in 3.5 years today!
Former Wahine 2011-2012 (Southern Utah transfer, St. Francis alum) Shannon Lum also received her degree today as well.
Gmorning Tsaikos!
If I may I’d like to reiterate a little thought for all of you to ponder through the holiday season-
Boise Not Going.
Supposedly in May, right as the 2013 season ends, new light poles (taller ones) and a new set of up to date lamps will be installed. Poles are supposedly being shipped from the mainland. Sen. Brian Taniguchi allocated the funds YEARS ago and now they are finally doing something. All the squinting you see our pitchers do in evening games are NOT game faces. Our catcher shouldn’t have to apply white chalk on her fingers so that our pitchers can see what pitches she is calling for during night games…*AHEM*
There are also underlying issues that might have been discussed. $100,000.00 quoted to address the erosion in the outfield at the softball stadium is also becoming a potential playing hazard, not to mention the falling nuts and bolts from the stands in the stadium itself.
2.4 million dollars was already paid out to SIX individuals just to DESIGN a new stadium and any work to begin on it would be 10-15 years down the road… at a final cost of over $11 million in TODAY’s figures…. Coach Coolen was supposed to meet with some people at the softball stadium, regarding what? I dunno. Hopefully it was to address some issues or some immediate future planning.
Could be as little as 2 years to break ground, could be never.
Good Luck and God Bless, WARRIOR GRADUATES!
A-Joe… re Boise – so it goes!
GO WARRIORS!
Hmmmmmmm. Me thinks that Keali’i has a brother at Kalaheo that may be a good looking tight end in Chow’s offense. Late bloomer. Need to project a few years down the line.
Congratulations to all of the graduates.
Are you kidding me!!! Arizona beats Nevada 49-48. Arizona was down 21-0 in the first quarter. They were losing 48-35 with 90 seconds left . They scored, then got the on side kick and scored again to win it. Chris Ault must be sick. But, Nevada covered the spread, hehe!
Also, Giant killer Butler beats #1 Indiana 88-86 in OT. It was an absolutely exciting and amazing game. A walk-on guard named Barlow hit the game winner floater in the middle of the key. Call him MR. Barlow now. I wish UH play a game like that. It would get the State jacked up.
Congrats to all the grads! Well done!
Cinqo:
You can wait for Etuale.
I’m hunting Ekuale.
A-Joe:
how r U?
with the 7 BB teams leaving the Big East, this may spell the demise of the current Big East. isn’t basket ball the big TV money winner for the Big East; not football?
then Bosie and San Diego will go where? back to the MWC?
Congrats to all the UH graduates, including our niece who gets her Masters, especially all the student athletes for all their burdens in balancing studies with sports meetings, practices, travel, and games.
It surely takes a special person to accomplish all of the above.
Sum Tin Won:
just great to see you posting again.
we certainly enjoyed your company at the Japanese/Chinese resturant in Nola on game day – you, your wife, son, and parent(s).
with all the latest commitments – this Holiday Season for UH sports may well be the best in many, many years!
will the 4 Kahuku players who were “leaning to UH” make a commitment? that would be GREAT!!!
Congratulations UH graduates!!!!! Gambatte!!!!!
ST according to middlehitter.com Kelii’s brother Nainoa Frank has also committed to Charlie Wade. And A-House with Kawe taking a trip to NMSU this weekend it sounds like rumors of his UH offer taken off the table may be true.
Also want to congratulate all of the graduates. Best of luck in your future endeavors. That diploma is something that can never be taken away from you.
Na Koa Mike
Please send me an e-mail with a FB Grad photo.
There are FB Alums out there that need to know what Letterwinners and Na Koa support programs produce.
Mahalo
Congratulations to all those that graduated today!!!
Mahalo to Letterwinner Board Members who made the very early morning commitment to greet and support the UH Athletes graduating today:

Lol….thank you kind sir…just make sure to gift wrap it with a big ribbon…..lol
Congratulations to the graduates!
Lots to celebrate.
Whoo-hoo!!!
Welcome to the new Warriors!
Still hope that New mom Falyn joins the wahine, she is exactly what they need to get over the hump and get that 5th title for dave.
Great news about Fey, hope charlie can snag Tui tuileta and Micah Ma’a from punahou next instant top 5 team!
Congratulations to all the Graduates! Well done!
What are the chances Jonas comes back to play one last season??
Congrats graduates!
Hope the coaches stay on Kennedy. Other schools are still after him and he’s going to use his visits
Re: Johnson.
He’s taking the trip there, but UH’s grayshirt offer remains on the table.
VbFan:
Heard the rumors, but apparently there’s no meat to them.
Unless he actually calls UH and says he’s coming back, then the Warriors are operating as if he won’t be playing for them in 2013.
Tulieta is supposed to be better in volleyball than football, but he’s awfully good in football, and that’s the money (scholarship) sport. Maybe he can be a two-sport guy. Has UH ever had a football-volleyball player?
Hope Kennedy studies hard to get the SAT scores.
Looks like a v-ball Rainbow Wahine might’ve had to choose between playing in the national championship (today, yes?) And graduating in Winter ceremonies at UH-M.
Which begs the question — if the NCAA overlooked that UH-M held graduation ceremonies today and, somehow for this year, designated the Stan Sheriff as the site for this year’s NCAA 1A women’s v-ball champainship game . . . who’d have to blink first? (methinks’d be the NCAA in this high scenariolized scenario.)

Faletuipapai supposed to have scholie offer from UH…..but also considering Houston too.

Rolo — Still got to Control the Ball with a Lead… (although O Never Got the Ball Back
Nevada Gives Up 13 point lead in last minute as Arizona makes TWO Long Drives to Come-From-Behind 49-48)
Aranda — Awesome Red-Zone Defense… YOU taught ALL That in the First Year?
TWO MORE Gems Got Away….
Congrats to all! The true meaning of student-athletes.
#96 – That’s a huge defensive back.
#97 – That’s a large human being.
Ikaika Akaka-Francis.was a better Vball player than football, coming out of Kalaheo.
Didn’t Tony Ching try out with the football team after bball was pau.
Didn’t Warrior WR walkon hopeful, Matt Kiel going go try play vball & fball. Likewise former Warrior DE/WR recruit Ervin Sione going to try play both and ended up playing neither. BTW he was recruited with this years seniors c/o 2008
#99 K-bay,
You do realize that Utah State’s HC Gary Andersen is the same Gary Andersen that was Defensive Coordinator for the University of Utah from ’04-’08 that beat #4 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and kept them to 17 points right?
Pretty sure…Wait, I am quite sure he has a heavy hand in molding/teaching the defense.
I don’t want to say Aranda had nothing to do with the success of the defense but their HC was known for being a very good defensive coordinator.
Wow, pretty soon the football team will have more Florida High School recruits that Hawaii High School guys.
#97,
Good lord he is big…(O_o)
#105,
Speed demons. Mwahaha. Don’t care where they are from, so long they can play and represent us well as Warriors.
I think people are giving Aranda & Rolo too much credit this year’s.
When they both failed to produce in 2011, the same people blamed Mack for micro managing their play calling.
Now when their team is succeeding its because of their play calling? Really??
You think Rolo calling the shots over Ault?
You think Aranda is over ruling Anderson?
Not me on either account
Rolo OMG!!!!! With all that fire power.
Texas Longhorns sweeps Oregon 3-0 in the wvolleyball final. Hawaii product Sarah Palmer is now an NCAA champion in her freshman year. Good decision. Hope Wahine can make it next year. Yes, true freshmen can make a big impact. Are you reading Higgins and Taylor?
#110
true. but pretty sure Palmer is a junior.
Congratulations to the graduates. Little do most people know just how hard you have to work to be a student athlete. Job well done.
BIK

Not sure if Emerald is gonna be wlling to cut all that hair off through.
#99, #104 & #108,
Looks like Aranda might be on the move…..back to Cali….

Palmer is a Junior from Hawaii Baptist Academy; Kat Brooks is a Freshman from Punahou. Two from Hawaii. Incredible. Palmer had a great match against Michigan. Really helped her team get to the finals.
Congratulations to all of the UH graduates today!
Just home from hanging with some of the graduates all afternoon, my nephew & then my “nephews”.
ST – Darius B. said he said he MIGHT train with Ikei, but he hasn’t made his mind up for sure. He had lots of ‘ohana here to celebrate with him.
Don Weir,
Mahalo for your support as well as the other Letterwinners.
Gratz to da Warriors grads! Great pics, Stephen.
