Volleyball Warriors land Punahou outside hitter

Fey Kupono 120x187The football Warriors aren’t the only UH team having a successful recruiting week.

The volleyball Warriors landed one of the state’s top players — Punahou outside hitter Kupono Fey.

He’s 6-5, athletic and comes from a good bloodline. His grandfather was Harry “Clown” Kahuanui, the first UH football player to compete in a collegiate all-star game. His bio can be found in UH’s Circle of Honor. Fey’s mother is Shelley Fey, a long-time basketball coach who is now Punahou’s chair of the physical education department.

Kupono Fey spent the summer competing on USA Volleyball’s Youth National team.

“He’s big, he’s physical, he’s a great coachable kid,” Punahou coach Rick Tune said.

This is a significant get for the volleyball Warriors, who have seen more than their share of ILH players head to the mainland. Credit Charlie Wade, Jeff Hall and new assistant Sean Carney for trying to keep the top local players home.

I think there was a middle blocker a few years ago. But he only lasted a season.

    This is a significant commitment.

Stephen, I have no doubt…. I think I could roll in the dough by raising crows, because may will need them for dinner before it’s all said and done

Congrats, Kupono Fey! See you on the court.

Getting ready to head to UH graduation… my nephew and “nieces & nephews” are graduating!

    Laters.

  24. kapakahi December 15, 2012 7:12 am

FINALLY!!! Good to see a local boy stay home once in awhile to play some VBall.

Would’ve been nice if Kupono’s cousin Micah Christenson had stayed home too.

  25. laulau head December 15, 2012 7:18 am

  26. ponojr December 15, 2012 7:20 am

An All State Punahou athlete to UH? The world must be coming to an end in a few weeks…lol.

  27. kapakahi December 15, 2012 7:39 am

    #6. ST,

No doubt the recruiting effort is more organized, consistent and persistent…..especially with local HS recruiting.

Would be nice if Warriors can land a JC DT transfer…..now that looking like Moala will need more time before transferring.

BUT also hoping that Coach isn’t relying too much on JC transfers…..like Mack did in with the 2008 recruiting class (when 11 of 22 signees were JC transfers, of whom only 3 ever became regular starters – Alexander, Bryant, Taylor).

  28. tihoni December 15, 2012 7:45 am

You mentioned bloodlines but left out Auntie Kelly Fey, a dominant paddler who owned the Molokai to Oahu women’s kayak event for 5 or 6 years running. A truly incredible athletic family on both mom and dad’s side.

So great to have our own stay home.

  29. kapakahi December 15, 2012 7:47 am

    #29,

    Good one!

  30. tommui December 15, 2012 7:57 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Welcome Kupono Fey!

  31. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 15, 2012 7:57 am

I’ve received information about the 2012 Capital Improvements budget allocations for the University of Hawai`i at Manoa’s Department of Athletics:

$12, 500,000:PLANS, DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION FOR IMPROVEMENS TO ATHLETIC FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA CAMPUS, GROUND AND SITE IMPROVEMENTS; EQUIPMENT AND APPURTENANCES

The Governor released the funds on August 15th.

However, I’ve not been able to get anyone either in the UHAD or in the Chacellor’s Office to provide any information as to what the money will be used for.

NOTE: The Ching Field improvements were funded in 2011.

Anyone here have information on where the current years funding will be allocated.

  32. hank December 15, 2012 7:57 am

Nevada making swiss cheese out of Arizona. Good job Nick. 21-0 in the first.

  33. Da Punchbowl Kid December 15, 2012 7:58 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Welcome Kupono! Great athletic legacy on both sides of his family – he and cousin Micah are keeping that tradition going.

  34. kaleo December 15, 2012 8:01 am

ST- it often seems that we ʻre-recruitʻ local boys who initially choose mainland schools but wish to come back home- any on the horizon this year? Or does NC not really push this like Coach Mac?

  35. haka December 15, 2012 8:45 am

    Congrats to Kupono!

Spoke with a family member and they are STOKED they get to see him play. Season ticket sales just went up x 100! The family is very proud of Kupono!

Hope Nainoa inks also…and looking ahead, Tui would like nice in a Warrior Volleyball AND Football jersey!

As fans, we should celebrate, honor and put the local players who stay home up on a pedestal. Support them through and through, during and after their careers. If we want them to make a difference, we have to let them know why it’s special. It’s a powerful difference, so let’s help ourselves and make a difference. SUPPORT, SUPPORT, SUPPORT!

    Go Warriors!

    Go Wahine!

  36. Bleed Green and White December 15, 2012 8:47 am

    WOW!

Refreshing to see a Punahou VB player committ to UH. Congrats Charlie Wade and company.

I was beginning to think “Don’t ever to UH” was a 4th period class at Punahou.

  37. Old School Dave December 15, 2012 8:52 am

Bottom line is that UH athletics is going to have to become more self-sufficient in generating revenue, fundraising, and attracting wealthy donors. There has to be less of a reliance on tax-payers money. You have to keep in mind that a lot of the general public here in Hawaii doesn’t support or have any connection or interest in UH/Athletics for many reasons (transplants, attended university on the mainland, kids attended mainland schools, casual fans at best, or simply not interested in sports in general).

  38. kev-1 December 15, 2012 9:05 am

Although I am not much of a mens volleyball fan, it is nice to see local boys play for the home team regardless of the sport. Welcome young man.

  39. SteveM December 15, 2012 9:19 am

    Good morning everyone!

Congratulations to the UH graduates today!

  40. Derek December 15, 2012 9:22 am

The Punahou Mafia hits again. Now, if Isaac S. changes his mind that would be huge. Also, Chow probably also offered a scholarship to Kanawai Noa. Unfortunately, Noa is still only a sophomore.

Mr. Joe Mathis, I hope you are enjoying our Hawaii weather, scenery, and your stay on your recruiting visit. We need you. Badly. What’s your major?

……….has the “ship sailed” on Falyn after playing pro beach or is there a sliver of hope to get her on the team? With FF we could be a FF (Final Four) Team.

IWWTHM, Why are they renovating the lockers and coaches locker and training room if they are building new ones?

  49. cocobean December 15, 2012 9:56 am

Winning off the field is the most important achievement of any student athlete.

    Congratulations graduates.

  51. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 15, 2012 9:58 am

    papajoe,

The building of a new locker/training facility is for football only. Gotta upgrade da buggah so we can start partying like it was 1995.

  52. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2012 9:59 am

Darius Bright said he had an achilles’ injury that kept him from playing after the Boise game. He plans to train with Chad Ikei.

Chow is helping Legay land a job.

  53. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 15, 2012 10:00 am

Sorry, forgot to add that the new locker/training facility for football is envisioned as a brand new building for football only.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

  60. BG December 15, 2012 10:29 am

ST…mahalo for the on-the-spot reporting on the recruiting efforts in multi-sports. The holidays seem brighter with the encouraging results.

  61. Kevin December 15, 2012 10:31 am

The women’s locker rooms are already gutted out heavily. Supposed to be completed this upcoming 2013. Not sure when. I’ve heard June and I have heard as early as early spring. So not too sure, but a few weeks ago, I did see heavy construction work taking place.

Those monies were allocated years ago for the sum of a little over $2 million. That was a Title IX thing that needed to be taken care of a long long long long time ago.

Finally they will have 21st century lockers and not the rusted moldy 12″x19″ things with the individual pad locks that kept getting broken into…

Also, I believe a current corporate sponsor of UH is also assisting with furnishing the locker rooms.

  62. Kevin December 15, 2012 10:33 am

Congrats to a pair of 1st base players.

Redshirt junior Jori Jasper completed her degree in 3.5 years today!

Former Wahine 2011-2012 (Southern Utah transfer, St. Francis alum) Shannon Lum also received her degree today as well.

  63. A-joe December 15, 2012 10:34 am

    Gmorning Tsaikos!

If I may I’d like to reiterate a little thought for all of you to ponder through the holiday season-

    Boise Not Going.

  64. Kevin December 15, 2012 10:43 am

Supposedly in May, right as the 2013 season ends, new light poles (taller ones) and a new set of up to date lamps will be installed. Poles are supposedly being shipped from the mainland. Sen. Brian Taniguchi allocated the funds YEARS ago and now they are finally doing something. All the squinting you see our pitchers do in evening games are NOT game faces. Our catcher shouldn’t have to apply white chalk on her fingers so that our pitchers can see what pitches she is calling for during night games…*AHEM*

There are also underlying issues that might have been discussed. $100,000.00 quoted to address the erosion in the outfield at the softball stadium is also becoming a potential playing hazard, not to mention the falling nuts and bolts from the stands in the stadium itself.

2.4 million dollars was already paid out to SIX individuals just to DESIGN a new stadium and any work to begin on it would be 10-15 years down the road… at a final cost of over $11 million in TODAY’s figures…. Coach Coolen was supposed to meet with some people at the softball stadium, regarding what? I dunno. Hopefully it was to address some issues or some immediate future planning.

  65. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 15, 2012 10:56 am

Could be as little as 2 years to break ground, could be never.

Keali‘i Frank was the last Punahou recruit.

Hmmmmmmm. Me thinks that Keali’i has a brother at Kalaheo that may be a good looking tight end in Chow’s offense. Late bloomer. Need to project a few years down the line.

  69. kifi December 15, 2012 11:11 am

Congratulations to all of the graduates.

  70. Derek December 15, 2012 11:13 am

Are you kidding me!!! Arizona beats Nevada 49-48. Arizona was down 21-0 in the first quarter. They were losing 48-35 with 90 seconds left . They scored, then got the on side kick and scored again to win it. Chris Ault must be sick. But, Nevada covered the spread, hehe!

Also, Giant killer Butler beats #1 Indiana 88-86 in OT. It was an absolutely exciting and amazing game. A walk-on guard named Barlow hit the game winner floater in the middle of the key. Call him MR. Barlow now. I wish UH play a game like that. It would get the State jacked up.

  71. haka December 15, 2012 11:14 am

  74. A-House December 15, 2012 11:29 am

    VbFan:

Heard the rumors, but apparently there’s no meat to them.

Unless he actually calls UH and says he’s coming back, then the Warriors are operating as if he won’t be playing for them in 2013.

  93. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2012 1:33 pm

Tulieta is supposed to be better in volleyball than football, but he’s awfully good in football, and that’s the money (scholarship) sport. Maybe he can be a two-sport guy. Has UH ever had a football-volleyball player?

  94. nanakuli December 15, 2012 1:37 pm

Hope Kennedy studies hard to get the SAT scores.

  95. Chcikcen Grease December 15, 2012 1:50 pm

Looks like a v-ball Rainbow Wahine might’ve had to choose between playing in the national championship (today, yes?) And graduating in Winter ceremonies at UH-M.

Which begs the question — if the NCAA overlooked that UH-M held graduation ceremonies today and, somehow for this year, designated the Stan Sheriff as the site for this year’s NCAA 1A women’s v-ball champainship game . . . who’d have to blink first? (methinks’d be the NCAA in this high scenariolized scenario.)

Aranda — Awesome Red-Zone Defense… YOU taught ALL That in the First Year?

    TWO MORE Gems Got Away….

Congrats to all! The true meaning of student-athletes.

  101. kifi December 15, 2012 2:40 pm

    #96 – That’s a huge defensive back.

  102. kifi December 15, 2012 2:41 pm

    #97 – That’s a large human being.

  103. BigWave96744 December 15, 2012 2:46 pm

Ikaika Akaka-Francis.was a better Vball player than football, coming out of Kalaheo.

Didn’t Tony Ching try out with the football team after bball was pau.

Didn’t Warrior WR walkon hopeful, Matt Kiel going go try play vball & fball. Likewise former Warrior DE/WR recruit Ervin Sione going to try play both and ended up playing neither. BTW he was recruited with this years seniors c/o 2008

    #99 K-bay,

You do realize that Utah State’s HC Gary Andersen is the same Gary Andersen that was Defensive Coordinator for the University of Utah from ’04-’08 that beat #4 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and kept them to 17 points right?

Pretty sure…Wait, I am quite sure he has a heavy hand in molding/teaching the defense.

I don’t want to say Aranda had nothing to do with the success of the defense but their HC was known for being a very good defensive coordinator.

  105. BigWave96744 December 15, 2012 2:48 pm

Wow, pretty soon the football team will have more Florida High School recruits that Hawaii High School guys.

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 15, 2012 2:52 pm

    #105,

Speed demons. Mwahaha. Don’t care where they are from, so long they can play and represent us well as Warriors.

  108. BigWave96744 December 15, 2012 2:54 pm

I think people are giving Aranda & Rolo too much credit this year’s.

When they both failed to produce in 2011, the same people blamed Mack for micro managing their play calling.

Now when their team is succeeding its because of their play calling? Really??

You think Rolo calling the shots over Ault?

You think Aranda is over ruling Anderson?

    Not me on either account

  109. Rodney December 15, 2012 3:00 pm

Rolo OMG!!!!! With all that fire power.

  110. Derek December 15, 2012 3:18 pm

Texas Longhorns sweeps Oregon 3-0 in the wvolleyball final. Hawaii product Sarah Palmer is now an NCAA champion in her freshman year. Good decision. Hope Wahine can make it next year. Yes, true freshmen can make a big impact. Are you reading Higgins and Taylor?

Palmer is a Junior from Hawaii Baptist Academy; Kat Brooks is a Freshman from Punahou. Two from Hawaii. Incredible. Palmer had a great match against Michigan. Really helped her team get to the finals.
