Hopefully Veikune will get picked high, but no matter what, he’ll be employed in Football this next year.

Are we going to use up our last scholarship on anybody new? Or, will it go to a current player who has proven himself?

  11. mctruck March 24, 2009 8:07 am

and so where is Leile, going?? ST….your thoughts…or maybe Garret?

    Free agency losses in 2010
“Why it’s an issue: The Dolphins will have 12 unrestricted free agents after the 2009 season. The list includes some key positions: Quarterback Chad Pennington, tight ends Anthony Fasano and David Martin, defenders Will Allen, Matt Roth and Jason Ferguson, and wide receiver Davone Bess.”

I look for Davone to have a breakout year, test the market and up with a better team.

Looks like some flexibility is needed in the questioning for today’s guest (or guess)….

    Who’s better? O-line or D-line?

What’s better? Having eligibility left or getting ready for the next level?

just want to say the best wishes to you and your fellow teammates on april 2 at the pro day. do you plan to participate in all events or just a select few since the scouts have already seen you perform at such a high level?

    question for ray hisatake….

i am so glad we finally got one japanese boy playing for the home team.

with that out of the way….its been a long time since you were recruited out of san mateo and you have gone through quite a bit transitioning from the defense to the offense. do you still think that you are on the “right” side of the line scrimmage or do you sometimes wish that you were back on the defense?

i hear you will get a shot at one of the guard positions, many of us will be pulling for you!

Rob25..does the instigator of a KK have to do the first song of the evening?

    Off topic..
Garret..regading electric cars. GM and the EV1 was around over 10 years ago. It went 0-65 in less than 10 sec. Cars was eventually destroyed. Not sure why.
Nissan introduced the Hypermini in 1997. Me thinks Pasadena county leased a buch of them for their fleet. Afte the leae expired in 2006 Nissan refuse an offer to purchase the fleet and destroyed them later.
Toyota in 2003 introduced the Rav4-EV 4×4. After the leae expired in 2005 they also destroyed the vehicles.
Not sure why but the technology is there and I hope by now improved. I don’t want to get into consipracy theories but it seems real funny that the price of oil and gas went sky high and continues to do funny things everyday now.

BaseBows had a good road trip. Need more improvement but you can see the quality of the devolping talent. this weekend series with Coastal will be telling. I look for them to challenge for a title this year.
    Go Warriors!

SteveM: Just saw this on your site about Karaoke Kall III:

6:45 PM and vacated at 11:45 AM.

Wow, that’s going to be a lot of singing! (And eating. And drinking.) 🙂

Also, I saw this link, and I thought it was funny:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29791614/

A naked 14-year-old boy taking a walk with a large white poodle assaulted a woman in Michigan, police said.

The boy walked away from a behavioral treatment facility on Monday, Sheriff’s Lt. Craig Mast said. He was strolling unclothed in Hart Township with the dog when he encountered a 53-year-old woman in her yard.

“The young naked man approached her with this poodle, and she immediately realized something peculiar,” Mast said.

I would think there’s something peculiar about a naked teenager walking a poodle! Now, it’s something I’d expect from homey … 😀

I gotta run; I’ll catch the replay of the show. (Wow, I have a backlog of about four or five shows to catch up on.) Someone cause trouble with Nanay Esme for me! 😛

First off, good luck with your NFL career, you remind me of a modern day Al Noga. Being a rush-end at UH, how do you feel about the possibility of being used as a Linebacker in a 3-4 package at the NFL level?

    Question for Ray Hisatake…

What has been the hardest transition to make from the DLine to the OLine and do you feel you have and advantage as an OLineman knowing DLineman tendecies?

  78. Florida Patti March 24, 2009 11:31 am

    Aloha Everyone,

It’s been awhile since I have given you an update so thought I would take this opportunity to do so now. Florida Ted is doing well, improving each day. He still is not able to sit on the computer and blog, and this makes him very anxious and frustrated. He wants so much to thank you all for the lovely cards and warm wishes, they really make his day. He received one card from Kelli Horita, so many nice greetings! He is wondering how you all got together to sign the card.

Another special item he received was from Jerry Anaya…a wonderful picture of your special group…..oh, how I wish Ted and I could be in a picture like this (with all of you). Such a fun and loving group you all are. Think I enjoy all these cards and correspondence as much as Ted!!
I hope someday that we can meet each and everyone of you.

I am still trying to get him some speech therapy. Today we did go to see someone, filled out forms and wait to see if he qualifies for funding. All in all he is doing really well, still has a sense of humor and we manage to laugh from time to time.

Again, thank you all for all your concern and well wishes…..sure wish I had your group here with me when he was in the hospital…but felt your love and ohana. God bless you all.

Its a beautiful day so I am going to take my favorite man for a walk in the sunshine, look up to the sky and thank the Lord for a beautiful day, and my darling Ted.

    Much love,
    Florida Patti

    Re-Ray Hisitake

First things that come to mind as I watched the video is that Ray is personable, looks like he’s been in the sun, spends time in the weight room and is very comfortable in front of the camera.

    First impressions are good…

…The part where he says he tried to get others to follow him to Hawaii makes him likable already in a lot of people’s eyes. Mine for sure.

An aura of dedication. An aura of unity are a few of the thing I sense from Ray, for he goes on to say, “We have to get ready, we have to train hard so we have enough in the tank for the fourth quarter”.

Easy going and relaxed Ray answers the questions thoroughly, sometimes pausing to laugh before answering, which I see a lot of pleasantness in him. And which I picked up really quickly in the interview, and one of the qualities I like about him.

As I reflect back on the show, Ray exudes IMO a lot of leadership and from what I see on camera he strikes me as the type of person or team mate I wished I had on my team if I were a player.

To sum everything up I was impressed with Ray’s persona, his appreciation to playing for UH and his focus on the upcoming season. Good luck to Ray Histake and his fellow team mates that good bounces come they’re way as they prepare for the upcoming season.

  146. warriorfanny March 24, 2009 2:02 pm

Hisatake showed well and for the most part was very articulate.
    He accounted well for himself.

His 22 reps @ 225 lbs is an underachievement for his 320 lb size, frame and senior class.
That is what a good RB can rep.
Haku Correa is a frosh and does 32 reps with 225lbs.
Haku is a DT–wonder what Hisatake’s DL opponents will be repping when they line up against RH this year.

Last year RH was part of the OL that was huffing and puffing for oxygen after runnijng a 40 yeard sprint….I didnt hear any specifics in his conditioning that tells me he is working on running other than a few vaque references.

Ray also mentioned that Brian Smith is the smartest coach he played under….c’mon dude, get real.
Brian Smith set two infamous sack records in 2 consecutive years as OL coach for Portland State and UH.
Im looking forward to Gordie Shaw who coached Big 10 offensive linemen.
Dunno his IQ compared to Smith but I guarantee our OL will improve and will be able to run more than one 40 without blacking out.

Who cares if he wears aloha shirts, eats ulu or walks with rubba slippas.

    Regarding #146

I could be wrong but I don’t remember Samson Satele being able to do a huge number of reps at 225#’s. I thought the problem with our O-line last year was poor footwork and balance. This though might have been due to so many of them being injured.

I’m glad that Mac is doing this again. This is great for Hawaii high school coaches and is great for their relationship to Mac and his staff!

University of Hawai`i head football coach Greg McMackin and his coaching staff will conduct the 2nd Annual Warrior Football Coaching Clinic Saturday, April 18 at the UH Athletics Complex. The clinic is open to all football coaches at a cost of $15.

“Last year was our first clinic and it was a huge success with coaches ranging from Pop Warner to high school,” McMackin said. “I’m really looking forward to this year’s clinic. We’re still looking to instill the basic fundamentals of coaching and we have a terrific staff who’ll share their knowledge, including two new members in Gordy Shaw and Chris Tormey.”

This New Jersey state senator is suing the Justice Department regarding the federal ban on sports betting. If his lawsuit works, then each state will get to decide if they want to allow legal betting on sports.

A state senator, seeing the potential for increased revenues and economic activity, filed a lawsuit yesterday aiming to overturn a federal ban on sports betting in most states, including New Jersey.

If successful, the suit would let every state decide whether to allow sports gambling.

State. Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D., Union) envisions a change that would bring up to $100 million to state coffers in taxes, generate billions in betting, spark economic activity, and throw lifelines to casinos and the horse-racing industry.

He contends, among other things, that the federal law does not uniformly regulate commerce and is overly broad and vague.

Nevada, Delaware, Oregon, and Montana were “grandfathered” into the 1992 law, giving them exemptions that allow them to permit sports betting.

Nevada allows the widest scope of such gaming, and Montana has some gambling on games, too. Delaware is looking to add sports betting in time for the 2009 National Football League season. Oregon in recent years scrapped its betting on sports.

A study funded by the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association, which joined Lesniak as a plaintiff, estimated that sports betting could become a $10 billion-a-year industry in New Jersey by 2011. The group’s chief executive, Joe Brennan Jr., said taxes and fees from that gambling could bring $100 million a year to state coffers.

  196. Garret March 24, 2009 5:52 pm

I think that this sports writer’s agents really went too far…asking for $1 million per year in this economy?

Earlier this month, we heard that contract negotiations between NFL.com and its top reporter, Adam Schefter, had gone south. Yesterday, the Watchdog reported that Schefter’s work – by all accounts, he was NFL.com’s version of Fox’s Jay Glazer and ESPN’s Chris Mortensen – had not appeared since March 3rd, he had made no TV appearances, and he wasn’t present at the owner’s meetings in California.

We hear that contract negotiations went so poorly – a source says the NFL Network offered a raise in the neighborhood of 100k a year, but Schefter’s CAA agents held out for a million a year – that Schefter was told to turn in his blackberry and that he’d be paid until August, when his contract expired.

  197. Garret March 24, 2009 5:55 pm

I’m glad to say that at this moment (it might only last 5 minutes!) everyone else is “it” and I’ve done my part of each of the different projects. It was nice to be able to look around and post some stuff. I can’t wait until this period is over and I can watch the ST/Esme show!

  198. Garret March 24, 2009 6:00 pm

The NFL just adopted 5 new rules. All of them seem to be geared towards safety concerns.

NFL owners passed several safety rules and adjusted the calls on the kind of tackle that injured quarterback Tom Brady in the 2008 opener. Defenders who are on the ground no longer can lunge into quarterbacks if the play is still going on.

Four other rules also were adopted. The initial force of a blindside block can’t be delivered by a helmet, forearm or shoulder to an opponent’s head or neck and will bring a 15-yard penalty.

Initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver also will draw a 15-yard penalty.

On kickoffs, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed.

Also, the kicking team can’t have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick.

  199. Garret March 24, 2009 6:01 pm

Miami’s head coach talked about trading Samson.

On the decision to trade Samson Satele, who started the past two seasons at center: “It isn’t really about what I didn’t see in Samson but having the opportunity to upgrade the position. Jake Grove really was a guy in free agency we looked and targeted for a long time. I know Jake, I’ve done the guy coming out (of college in 2004). For us it’s an upgrade in an area that is critical in our division. You look at our division and the people those guys have to play against (including Pro Bowl nose tackles Vince Wilfork and Kris Jenkins).

    rich2176,

I’m in proposal hell right now, but hopefully all 3 things will be signed and out the door by Thursday. How late will you folks be wherever you are? I doubt I can make it for 5:30pm, but if I can spare the 3+ hours for driving (darn rush hour) round-trip, I should be able to make it by 6 or 7.

  212. Garret March 24, 2009 8:24 pm

Scout.com’s top 300 recruits for 2010 list came out today and I did a brief scan for recruits from Hawaii. This is what I found during the quick scan.

    128: V.J. Fekoko (4 stars)
    237: Graham Rowley (3 stars)
    241: Kona Schwenke (3 stars)

I know that scout hasn’t updated the schools list for several recruits, so I don’t know how accurate the lists for these 3 players are. When scout.com themselves has an interview with a recruit in Texas and the recruit lists 4 schools, and the scout list doesn’t list several of those schools in their “interest list” for the recruit, I don’t think their list updating is foolproof.

Unemployment is much lower in college towns than the country in general, with some Universities actually having a hard time finding people to fill their technical positions. The highly skilled workforces in college towns are credited for part of their favorable job situations.

It sounds like Miami’s head coach thinks that Grove will be better for them at center than Samson because he has better weightlifting numbers…this kind of relates to a discussion earlier in the blog.

Unlike some of you, Sparano has no question new starting center Jake Grove will be an upgrade over Samson Satele. Although Grove has struggled to stay on the field because of injuries and really isn’t that much different in height and weight than the departed Satele, the coach is confident Grove will be there for games and will stronger at the point of attack against AFC East nose tackes: “We’ve done our due diligence with the whole thing, obviously,” Sparano said. “Jeff and Bill have done a tremendous job of getting into the background of all these guys we’ve brought here. I don’t think that was really a concern of ours at the time. It certainly isn’t.

“When you talk to people about Jake and his strength totals and the way he works in the weight room, you certainly get the picture. From our end, our offseason program is something that is important to us and Jake’s there on campus right now. He’s involved in lifting right now and the program hasn’t even started. So we feel like that’s something that helped an awful lot of our players last year.”

  231. SteveM March 24, 2009 9:48 pm

Ralph — Kazz’s preliminary tailgate email indicated Cabana C. We have had C before so I did not think it unusual for an April tailgate. Anyway, BG or Kazz can reconfirm…

  232. Garret March 24, 2009 9:48 pm

Miami is focusing on the pass rush, specifically looking for a college DE that they can turn into a pass-rushing OLB. With their bringing in David Veikune for an interview, this could be an interesting team to watch in the draft for Veikune.

The Dolphins need an explosive receiver and the starting cornerback job opposite Will Allen is open to competition, but anyone who knows Bill Parcells can surmise that he will spend much of his time during the NFL Draft trying to add a different key element to Miami’s roster.

Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush.

It is important for Miami to get more help for outside linebacker Joey Porter, who had 17 ½ sacks last season.

”Very important,” Sparano said. “It’s very important we find somebody who can do that other than Joey. In the last three games of the season, where teams started to take the protection completely to Joey, we had to come up with ways to still put pressure on the passer.

“As you know, you can never have enough pass rushers. That’s what we believe. And right now, we don’t have enough.”

HONOLULU – University of Hawai`i head football coach Greg McMackin and his coaching staff will conduct the 2nd Annual Warrior Football Coaching Clinic Saturday, April 18 at the UH Athletics Complex. The clinic is open to all football coaches at a cost of $15.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and includes instructional sessions conducted by the assistant coaches throughout the day. Participants are invited to watch the Warriors’ practice at 3:00 p.m. Lunch and post-practice refreshments will be provided.

Washington State will start selling tickets online on Saturday to the UH game in Seattle. I would think that UH would have some seats from Washington State, but don’t have any details of UH’s ticket availability and seat location.

Single-game tickets for Washington State football road games next season will go on sale Saturday, online only at http://www.wsucougars.com, beginning at 8 a.m. That includes the Cougars’ eighth annual game at Qwest Field in Seattle, set for Sept. 12 vs. Hawaii, and the Apple Cup, Nov. 28 at Husky Stadium.

One WAC school and 3 MWC schools cracked this preseason top 25 list from CBS Sports.

    16. Boise State: Look what going undefeated got the Broncos? Certainly not the Fiesta Bowl. The best non-BCS program in ’09 soldiers on.
Watch: The opener against Oregon. It will set the tone for the remainder of the season.

    17. Utah: Bad news for the mouthy Mountain West. Utah isn’t playoff caliber this year. The two best players (Brian Johnson, Paul Kruger) are gone. The Utes should still be good enough to win the league.
Watch: The defense. Eight starters are back from a top-11 unit in ’08.

    19. TCU: The Horned Frogs have to reload on the defensive line for the second year in a row. Defensive end Jerry Hughes returns.
Watch: For a more productive offense that should be able to win close games when the defense plays their hearts out. That wasn’t the case last season.

    25. BYU: When was the last time the defense led the way in Provo? Eight starters return.
Watch: The standings. Until further notice, BYU is still the third-best program in the Mountain West behind Utah and TCU. Thirteen of the team’s 28 turnovers last season came against TCU, Utah and in the bowl game against Arizona.

Florida International has to cut more than $1 million from their Athletic Budget for the coming year! And this is after their teams had a good year…

”Through ongoing discussions with the university administration,” FIU athletic director Pete Garcia said, “a decision has been made that athletics, along with a number of other significant programs in this university, will have to adjust their budgets. The time has come to cut more than $1 million from the athletic budget, which will include significant layoffs within the department.”

Whether it was the FIU football team tying the program record for wins last season, the baseball team producing the No. 15 recruiting class in the country and this season off to its best start since 2002, or the volleyball team winning the Sun Belt Conference, many of FIU’s teams have begun to turn the corner within the past year.

  283. July Jones March 25, 2009 6:38 am

Wow Nate Ilaoa is on board now huh? Is that just for the Spring or does he plan to be there in the Fall as well. I know the AFL is not in session this year which could be the reason his time is freed up. Does this mean B Smith will begin to work his way towards the door? Ouch!!!

    Kekoa,
thanks for the info. very much.

    Koakane,
howzit bradda! 😀 about JJones thoughts.
I think Coach Mack has shown he is not a quitta.
he’s giving BSmith every shot at being
a very sound coach, now he’s giving him
experience at dis level and bringing in some
great teachers and leaders who cannot help
but improve the whole team, incl. coaches.
for me, BSmith was not da great communicator
it wasn’t just da occasional stutter, it was dat
da Warriors on da Oline neva pay attention to
him last year. I think they’ll pay more attention
to him now though. know why? he get backup.
their job is partly to make him look good. and he will.
    thats my edumacated guess. 😀

University Athletics is buisness. Football is a branch of the overall Buisness that Mack is ultimately responsible for. Bad buisness moves have been made before resulting in broken promises hence the “Stutzman Project” Great move by Mack it did land their top WR recruit. I am sure an improved OL unit is what was expected from the BS experiment which has went sour and is now been shuffled around. As bhilo mentioned “da Oline neva pay attention to him last year.” Position coaches shouldnt need backup for their players under the position they coach. There is a thing called Dead Weight not trying to be harsh but with UH trying to expand the use of the RB beyond an additional lineman his skills, background, insight to how to make a person miss, catch the ball, set up the blocks will not be his strengths. Instead of trying to make a coach into something he is not, (He wasn’t even that good at something he was) Cut your losses and upgrade. As mentioned its a buisness and a buisness trying to create a new identity, with the Run and Tight end. If he couldnt fire up the O lineman who he could better relate to there wouldnt even be a flicker for those he cant relate to.
    Go UH Warriors

july……stutz2 was committed to the warriors well before the stutz1 deal. i am not sure what kind of “promises” were made since most ga positions are for two years. of course, rumors abound, however, only mack and stutz knows exactly what was discussed at their meeting.

July not June, u begin to touch on a sore spot, re RB coach, but mahalo for scratching the surface and revealing a legitimate issue.
This coaching position has been neglected too long.

Since, JJ, we havent seen a legitimate RB coach.
IMO, we have suffered as a result.
    The trend continues.

I wasnt a Gerke fan but at least he changed some drills and worked his players during agility drills.
He also had drills that emhasized ball handling but….that is where it ended, once the RBs went to 7-7 or 11-11 his contact with his players wasnt consistent becz he would shift over to OL with Smith.
Basic stuff during live drills were lacking such as shuffle pass snags.
Many times our RBs had their palms turned the wrong way–simple basics.

Look, this position deserves a legitimate coach that can apply basic fundamentals of ball handling, stepping, cutting, ball shift, grasp, spinning, clutch and cover-at-contact skills.

Either the coach has actual experience and communication skills or has had success in coaching that position.

We have gone through Wes Suan, Gerke and now Smith.
Nasty is proof positive how a good RB can contribute and make this r-n-s system GO….if only, we could get a legit RB coach–we might have more consistency–year to year.
