Umu gets scholie; Manu leaves team

In one of those good news/sad news deals, defensive end Kamalu Umu will receive a football scholarship starting Monday, the first day of UH’s fall semester.

It’s well deserved for Umu, who is married and has a 2-year-old daughter. He really worked hard to earn the starting job at right end.

The scholarship became available when defensive end Veni Manu, a 2009 signee who recently became eligible, quit the team. Best wishes to Manu.

* * * * *

We’ve been told that UH, in doing its “due diligence,” polled representatives from each of the school’s athletic teams. From what we’ve been told, the majority of non-football programs would prefer for UH to go independent in football and compete in, say, the Big West in the rest of the sports. Of course, this was a preliminary sampling taken during an emotional period following Fresno State’s and Nevada’s announced departures from the WAC.

More studies, we’re told, will be done. Still, very interesting.

* * * * *

We all know my skepticism about UH becoming a football independent.

To which I add one more thing to the debate: Where in the heck will you get the referees?

And, really, think another team wants to hear: “OK, for this game, we;ll be using Hawaii refs …”

Happy birthday to our favorite Grim Reader — Ralph.

COMMENTS

  1. Ralph August 21, 2010 2:35 am

the Big West is the best option for UH but as an independent in fb would be a tough sell. We don’t have the allure or draw of Navy or West Point to be able to schedule teams in their mid season conference schedule

  2. Ralph August 21, 2010 2:38 am

if we had a history of playing army and navy on a regular seasonal basis we could count on them for 2 games every season but trying to do so at this juncture would be difficult. Most schedules are 5 years in advance, a tough cycle to break into to formulate a 12 or 13 game season.

  3. Ralph August 21, 2010 2:45 am

To save the other sports UH football should sell its soul to the highest bidder and travel all season long and hopefully JD can secure a million plus guarantee and ppv for all the away games. We can have at least 4 or 5 home games with a 2 for 1 deal, we play one, travel for 2. Schedule the best to be able to charge a premium per game, BCS teams only and maybe BYU to fill the house.

  4. Ralph August 21, 2010 2:57 am

keep the fans happy, no more premium seating surcharge for games against teams such as Charleston Southern and Central Arkansas. Bundle those games in a season ticket package but show transparency, what is the per game cost of each team playing at home. K State does this for individual ticket sales, bundle a Nebraska game ticket with a game against a weaker opponent, this season opener against UCLA is bundled with Missouri State. Want a chance to watch a major opponent like Nebraska, got to buy another game ticket. Lots of Nebraska fans are stuck with a ticket they don’t want, fire sale in the parking lot. LOL

  5. Ralph August 21, 2010 3:13 am

my bad, K State maximizing their Nebraska and Texas game this season, all tickets for $75, plus premium seating surcharge

  6. Michigan Warrior August 21, 2010 3:15 am

Well, gratz to Umu! Good, hard work pays off! Still want to know why Manu quit.

  7. midnight August 21, 2010 4:00 am

Surprise – Top 10. Ralph – I wonder what time you go to bed since I always note your past midnight postings. Good morning all the Tsaikos when you awake. 9am here in Texas. 18 consecutive days of 100 degree weather. Getting excited now that the football season is about to begin.

    Go Warriors, beat USC!!!

  8. Slugger August 21, 2010 4:12 am

I knew I shouldn’t have had Thai iced coffee tonight, but…I could get the shirt inventory done for the softball booster club. (More news to come…)

Good luck to Veni Manu. Hope you stay in school.

Congrats to Kamalu Umu! Work hard! Beat USC!

Hi, midnight! Hi, Barbara! Miss you guys!!!

Go to bed Ralph! We have a meeting tomorrow.

  9. Committed Road Warrior August 21, 2010 4:16 am

I’m glad that I’m going to be on the West Coast the day of the USC game. I was dreading having to stay up until 2-3am to watch it, since the game wouldn’t start until 11pm on the East Coast.

Now it’ll be a more manageable 8pm. Much, much better!

  10. Slugger August 21, 2010 4:17 am

I’m going to be using toothpicks to hold my eyes open tomorrow…might not make it to practice…

K, off to see if I can sleep.

Good morning, midnight! (Sounds funny, no?)

  11. Slugger August 21, 2010 4:18 am

Good night, CRW! Glad you’ll be on the West Coast Sept. 2nd.

  12. Slugger August 21, 2010 4:20 am

    Good luck to Waipio!!!

  13. postmanke August 21, 2010 5:11 am

Kenny & JD I don’t think would have a tough time to fill the schedule as an Independent. I think it will be a great move. Do it!

  17. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 21, 2010 5:48 am

I didn’t realize how late it was when I went to bed a little over three hours ago, but life is busy.

Would someone please identify who the attractive young woman is in yesterday’s paper – I believe her name is Kortney (sp). I assume she’s a Tsai-ko regular – or connected to one.

Our big plans for today had to be scaled back with respect to cleaning the waterways because of the lack of boats & kayaks. Only one person volunteered her kayak but we would have had to pick it up at her house.

The body shop out in Waipahu is ordering bolts via the Internet to attach the boat hitch to our 1988 Camry – if one of their regular suppliers has the right ones in stock. If they do, then the hitch will be put on sometime after Labor Day. If not, then we’ll wind up paying for a custom bolt set which will cost us upwards of $300 which is way more than we can afford to pay at this point. However, since we don’t know anyone with a truck or vehicle with a hitch already attached, it looks as if we don’t have any choice but to figure out some way to pay for it. It’s times like these that having a credit card or two would be very helpful.

Be sure to mark you calendars – TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at Murphy’s. More information to come.

Off to work – remember to drop on by if you’re out & about & bring along some non-perishables for the Foodbank Drive or pick up a CFL.

  18. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 5:58 am

This whole WAC situation doesn’t keep me up at night, but it sure wakes me up early.

  19. whitey August 21, 2010 6:01 am

    Good morning Tsaikos

  20. NYUH August 21, 2010 6:03 am

Wow, I’m out of mobile range for a few days in Canada and the whole WAC falls apart.

    NYUH:

    You sound like Karl Benson.

  22. LizKauai (iPhone) August 21, 2010 6:04 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Hawaii needs to visualize itself as being the beautiful bride left at the alter by a diseased and unworthy fiancé and not the unwanted stepchild of the WAC or any other athletic conference.

The whole world is in a state of shift and change. This is the time to focus on our unchanging values that guide us ke ala pono.

    Chancellor Hinshaw and Jim Donovan-

    Make excellence our Truth.

BELIEVE that Hawaii is being given an opportunity to change for the Better.

Look for that opportunity and resist selling your soul to go down the path of greed and fear that others have done.

    Be sharp, open-minded and patient.

Let all prove by thought and action that Hawaii brings greatness to any table in every sport. And at home and away, it brings fans through the gates and doors and all the benefit therefrom.

    Go Waipio and Warrior alumni!

    Have a blessed day!

    Re: Kortney

Not sure if she is considered a “Tsai-ko,” but she is a regular reader.

She also used to be one of the Warrior Beat sales people. She came to our blog’s second anniversary party at the Stan Sheriff Center.

And, she is one of the coolest people. Big 49er fan, bigger UH fan, and she competes in several fantasy football league leagues.

By the way, we actually have a large number of female readers to this blog. As you can see, many choose not to post. But, actually, more women than men come up to me and talk about the blog.

  26. mctruck August 21, 2010 6:10 am

If I were a player on the UH team, my resolve/mantra would be never to lose another game to any of the departing teams.

Kudos to Utah St. for standing their ground(solidarity). I think looking at it now…..UH should likewise remain steadfast just like Utah St. did. “Last MAN Standing”, credo.

  27. 808ike August 21, 2010 6:13 am

    ST,

    Lucky guy!!!!!

  28. NYUH August 21, 2010 6:14 am

  29. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 6:14 am

    McTruck:

I think the players’ resolve, anyway, is not to lose a game.

I know every time a person does a prediction on the UH season, there will be lines like “this is a trap-door game”or “there might be a letdown after playing so-and-so” …

Of course, that’s not how players feel. Football is a physical game. Even if your girlfriend left you that day or your dog is sick, after the first hit, nobody is feeling down or thinking ahead or wondering if freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.

  30. mctruck August 21, 2010 6:15 am

Aloha Liz, ur #22….I fully agree with your thoughts.

  32. mctruck August 21, 2010 6:18 am

    ST,

o.k., call it a “super special resolve.”

  33. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 6:21 am

The MWC’s actions were an attack on the WAC.

But I do like how Hawaii fans feel it is attack on Hawaii.

I wonder if San Jose State fans or Idaho followers are feeling the same way about their schools. If I were San Jose State, I would be really ticked. Twice, members of the same California state school system dumped you.

  34. 808ike August 21, 2010 6:22 am

    ST,

WB is #1 for postings at HA. Dates like 8/10 & etc. have 1200-1400 post.

  35. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 6:23 am

It’s weird how I get sympathetic e-mails and calls from journalists covering the departing schools.

What the heck has happened to our society that journalists are nicer than the people they cover?

  36. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 6:24 am

    808:

    Those were spam-inflated numbers.

But I’m not sure if the bosses know that. So, shhhhh.

Congrats Kamalu! Make us proud, son!

  38. mctruck August 21, 2010 6:28 am

  39. 808ike August 21, 2010 6:29 am

Hope the bosses don’t know. May get a nice pay raise being #1.

Good morning, everyone! Happy Birthday, Ralph 🙂

Congratulations to Kamalu Umu for earning his scholarship; best wishes to Veni Manu…

For me, it can be a little intimidating posting here, as posters here are very knowledgeable.

Looking forward to a great game for Waipio this morning and Colt this afternoon!

    Happy Birthday Ralphy

  47. Shoko August 21, 2010 6:48 am

I think most of the sports columnist and beat writers that cover the WAC have a good working relationship with each other. It’s like losing a family member.

  48. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 6:53 am

… Or they know how much I’ll miss two of the WAC’s casino towns.

  49. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 6:54 am

By the way, no scrimmage this morning.

In fact, no scrimmages until Sept. 2.

  50. Bulla August 21, 2010 6:57 am

good luck to Umu and congratulations 🙂 best of luck to Manu, get your degree!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  51. Hilo Moon August 21, 2010 6:58 am

ST – If this is inappropiate, because of political rererence, throw out this post.

What a week for the University of Hawaii …Auwe! First, a subtle put down by a political candidate ( or maybe, not so subtle ) and then a kick-in the-gut fracas in the WAC.

Everyone please know that the University of Hawaii is an outstanding school. Stand proud, everyone. IMUA!

  55. CoolEthan August 21, 2010 7:02 am

RE: “missing those little casino towns”

UNLV & Hawaii will be in the same conference. Get ready for those nickel slots.

  56. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 7:03 am

And then the biggest injustice of all.

During Thursday’s talent show, the receivers put on a dazzling dance performance. Matching outfits. Matching moves. Mack said it was better than any Vegas show he’d seen.

But one judge — OK, it was Robert Kekaula — deducted two critical points. The first was for “delay of game.” The receivers missed their scheduled spot while changing into their outfits. A second point was deducted for “blatant” okole-kissing by Jett Jasper, who tried to schmooze the judges.

  57. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 7:04 am

Apparently Veni Manu quit during practice.

Time for me to get new trifocals.

  58. protector August 21, 2010 7:04 am

I second the motion! It would be especially sweet to thump Boise State in their backyard as that will guarantee more national credibility to go along with (what’s earned in) the game I feel will vindicate UH from the Sugar Bowl debacle and salve everyone’s frustration regarding the latest WAC developments…beating the Trojans on national TV!

  62. haroldwah August 21, 2010 7:21 am

#29-Wow Stephen you must be old quoting a Janis Joplin song. Dang I must be old too

  63. Pomai August 21, 2010 7:21 am

#33 ST – “But I do like how Hawaii fans feel it is attack on Hawaii.” – It was. You know darn well that when someone said “What about Hawaii” Craig Thompson said screw Hawaii.

  64. Pomai August 21, 2010 7:34 am

This is from a San Deigo newspaper – quote by Nevada President Milt Glick “Efforts to forestall such a raid on the WAC, which recently led conference schools to establish a $5 million membership buyout, proved to be futile. Fresno State and Nevada both agreed to bolt the WAC for the Mountain West despite the prospect of expensive exit fees (still subject to negotiation) and a higher caliber of competition.” We really need to kick their arse the next two seasons. Like maybe 65 -0.

  67. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 7:37 am

    I just don’t know.

  68. chawan_cut August 21, 2010 7:37 am

    no scrimmage? really?

awww. i guess they really want them fired up ready to crack someone on sept 2. as long as we don’t get any personal foul penalties.

  69. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 7:38 am

I think there was a window for scrimmaging. It probably was last Saturday.

But now it’s too late. No sense getting people hurt just to put on a show for fans.

  70. haka August 21, 2010 7:40 am

WAC officials should pay close…ahem, attention to the exiting teams in all their remaing conference games. Flag’em for just being there! 🙂

  71. Last Call August 21, 2010 7:40 am

  73. chawan_cut August 21, 2010 7:42 am

The draft is tomorrow, online at noon Hawaii time. If you cant draft live, you can have the computer do it for you. email me at djmitcho at yahoo dot com if you want to play. Looks like there will be a new champ this year because Jason hasn’t signed up to defend his back to back titles. Nice press release from Hinshaw on the UH site. Have confidence my man.

For folks questioning the risk of going independent, there was a bunch of guys from 2007 who kept saying this one word that I’m wondering if we’re forgetting: BELIEVE!

Of course in the end Georgia slaughtered ’em, then their coach ran away for more money, and their AD got fired so okay maybe not…

Interesting stuff going on in Las Cruces. NMS wants to use 4’1 million a year from academics to save athletes which is deep dodo and as expected the academics are outraged . Many in Las Cruces feel that NMS needs to drop down a level in football and join a conference like the Big Sky.

I’ve got to say to my blog “host” happy birthday Ralph!!!! 39 again??

  122. d1島 August 21, 2010 9:29 am

I think there was a window for scrimmaging. It probably was last Saturday.

But now it’s too late. No sense getting people hurt just to put on a show for fans.

    Interesting.

I hope the new starters will be ready for “game speed” on Sept. 2 when the fans really expect a show….

  123. d1島 August 21, 2010 9:33 am

I think everyone should be invited to a BBQ.

Sometimes it’s important to know exactly what the host means when by, “have you over for dinner.” 😯

  127. Old School Dave August 21, 2010 9:46 am

Enough of this doom and gloom conference talk. UH football needs to just win, if not dominate, plain and simple.

As far as a new stadium, if the Lower campus isn’t doable, how about at the Ala Wai golf course? You could have fan also arrive by boats (or canoes) and dock nearby to attend UH football games, just like UW’s Husky Stadium:

    http://blog.newsok.com/ou/files/2008/09/husky-stadium.jpg

I believe ALL of these defections were meant to “distract our fb team in preparations for the big game against USC…..well, it didn’t work!!!

  134. SteveM August 21, 2010 10:00 am

    RE: #128

Old School Dave — I never considered the boat accessibility aspect of that locale. Water taxi or use 100 pax tenders like the cruise ships. That would relieve a lot of car traffic–and docks and parking could be at the Convention Center and other areas. Water taxi dock could be at Ala Moana Blvd and McCully too. Short ride on flat water…

  135. d1島 August 21, 2010 10:01 am

…with all the craziness this week, I finally got around to checking the reaction from SJSU.

People in the Bay Area, predictably, are blaming the whole thing on Bush! 😉

#1. If or when the WAC closes, what happens to all the “left over $$$”? Who does it go to? Is there a % per school based on seniority?

#2. Congrats to Umu and very best to Manu!

#3. Did BYU use the WAC to further their own cause to receive concessions from the MWC?

Is it official that BYU will stay in the MWC?

#4. Perhaps UH does NOT have an “options” plan that can be functional now and reason for “weighing all options”? I know of others who did the same thing.

#5. If the WAC survives, meaning that USU and UH will not bolt for the MWC, hope their 1st priority is to invite those who are already D-1A qualified or near qualification or, last choice, invite 3-4 schools and help them financially to go over the hump until they can stand on their own. Such as, waive any entry fee or allow an installment plan, not more than 5 years, to pay the entry fee and raise the “exit fee” for all to $15-20,000,000 payable in 60 days!!!

#6. When players say “travel to Hawaii sucks”, it tells me that they have not or have had very limited experience(s) in long distance travel. However, this is an excellent experience for future use for employment or planning vacations. Or, are they content to be born, raised, and died within 200 miles from home?

#7. UH needs to make a quick decision on its future football status for if they go independent, it will doom the WAC; better now than 3 or 4 years down the road. This, of course, will be a moot point if USU is invited and accepts a MWC invite or LaTech goes to C-USA.

#8. And most important, is to rally around UH, UH (Pres, Chancellor, AD) meet with the “shakeres ‘n movers” (especially leaders of the Legislature), create the necessary plans to meet most if not all contingencies, and secure the funds and place it in escrow for future uses. Remember to include the travel/airline/tourist industry folks.

#9. Create a “battle cry” – I like IMUA HAWAII; let it resound at Aloha Stadium as it goes from Mauka to Makai and North to South – Mauka says IMUA; Makai’s response is HAWAII; North says IMUA and South responds with HAWAII; then entire stadium says, IMUA HAWAII!!! Have the cheer and dance teams create signs to hold up.

  143. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 10:10 am

Why not just extend the Ala Wai all around the island—

for all taxpayers to use…instead of the rail?

Wonder how much it costs to dig a ditch?

  144. curveball August 21, 2010 10:10 am

    from the Raiders blog page:

Gradkowski’s one-year non-guaranteed tender at $1.759 million, reasonable for a backup quarterback, becomes a lead weight if Jackson determines he’d rather have Boller as the backup and Davis determines Brennan would be an interesting and more economical option at No. 3.

  145. Old School Dave August 21, 2010 10:11 am

Re: # 135 — SteveM: With some proper planning, EISs, etc, (might be hard on the talapia) using the Ala Wai could be a viable means of getting fans to UH football games. I lived in Seattle for a couple of years and there was a water taxi on Lake Washington for Husky games (if memory serves me correctly), but just a lot of fans took their boats and docked nearby. BTW, with Husky Stadium there’s basically one road that goes by there.

  146. d1島 August 21, 2010 10:14 am

    Mahalo! 🙂

  147. Ralph August 21, 2010 10:15 am

Last Call if UH is the last WAC school standing JD would still be contemplating 3 options, We can keep the WAC going, or join another conference but no one is calling, and there is a possibility that we go independent in football only. We got to look at all of our options and really think about them.

  148. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 10:17 am

  153. Ralph August 21, 2010 10:40 am

that’s okay, I got my Na Wahine volleyball tickets and we are going undefeated and win next week’s tournament. I wish I could state with confidence that the fb will be at least 2-2 going into the WAC. All to often we repeat the mantra “it’s tough winning on the road”, and our players psyche is already beaten before they make their first contact. Excuses. Good teams win at home and on the road, they may not go undefeated at home or on the road, but they get the job done more often than not. Eo Na Toa, Eo Na Toa e. Warriors Respond. Oops I forgot, coach Mac decided not to use any of the music chants, back to Hawaii 5-0. Book’em Mac.

Hey SteveM. Thanks for the invite, but working two, and soon to be three jobs I don’t have much free time (I’m actually working now…….shhh).

Did you live in Seattle? Mercer Island, the place you mentioned, is a nice place to live with a very good school system. Leroy Lutu (the former UW and University High player) lives on Mercer Island and I guess he’s done well in his line of work (real estate from what I read).

  175. kendall August 21, 2010 11:09 am

The remaining 6 teams should make a pact to stay together, with another 5-million dollar buyout. I think the WAC can survive with the additions of Texas St. & UT-San Antonio. We can dominate this conference and have more diverse schedule.

I have the utmost respect for Utah St.

Steve — yes, many meet in small or large groups often. The tailgates are the largest evolutions, followed by medium-large karaoke Calls, and the Cattle Calls, usually at lunchtime on a weekday. We just had Cattle Call on Thursday.

I list the known open/public get-togethers on my Tsai-ko web page (click on my name). Bear in mind that only known public or events posted on the blog by the coordinator are listed there. Here are examples of Tsai-ko Cattle Calls and Karaoke Calls:

ST, anything interesting happen in today’s practice?

  198. roysan16 August 21, 2010 12:42 pm

    To Venu Manu,

First of all best wishes. Second of all can you set the record straight and confirm or either deny if you were ever on scholarship at UH?

Personally I think there’s more to this story than what’s let on. We’ll see.

  199. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 12:45 pm

    roysan:

Yep, he apparently was going to be on scholarship Monday, but when he quit, the scholarship went to Umu.

  201. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 12:50 pm

He joins the Warriors Monday, as a safety.

  202. d1島 August 21, 2010 12:56 pm

Any other notable “returnees” on Monday?

  203. roysan16 August 21, 2010 12:59 pm

Then my next question to Venu would be if he would confirm that a scholarship was to be awarded to him Monday?

  204. d1島 August 21, 2010 1:01 pm

    🙄

  205. d1島 August 21, 2010 1:17 pm

    from SC blog

For all the talk about the lack of depth at linebacker, it might not be an issue in the first game against Hawaii. Kiffin noted that the Warriors play so much spread offense, the Trojans may never be in their base 4-3 defense. Meaning, they’ll likely play three cornerbacks most of the game instead of three linebackers.

  206. sports for fun August 21, 2010 1:18 pm

i’m glad colt got cut by the ‘skins. i killed me to root for someone in redskin red!! now he can try to hook on with another team that is not a rival to my ‘boys!! haha

  207. d1島 August 21, 2010 1:19 pm

    What a convenient name!

Was this updated by Mr. Mann?

In that scenario, Nickell Robey will play the nickel position against the slot receiver regardless of whether or not he’s considered the #2 corner. At only 5’8″, his lack of height is less of a problem when he plays inside, although judging by his leaping ability, size might not be an issue at all.

  208. d1島 August 21, 2010 1:21 pm

    They scrimmaged today and…

I don’t expect there to be much tackling, if any, in tomorrow’s preseason game.

    What? Flag football tomorrow?

    P.E. football maybe?

  209. Committed Road Warrior August 21, 2010 1:21 pm

    Let’s Go Saints!

  212. A-House August 21, 2010 1:36 pm

Wiht ESPN leaving out Hawaii in the ghost conference, makes one wonder how valuable the Hawaii Bowl is to ESPN – especially since they own it.

  213. Ralph August 21, 2010 1:43 pm

ESPN puts on a lot of small, low paying bowls to keep the non bcs conferences quiet or at least, not to include them in an anti-trust law suit.

  214. greenthumb August 21, 2010 2:30 pm

Sorry to be asking this question so late, but I was catching up on reading … are we sure what happens to the basketball teams remaining in the WAC if the # of “we’ve played each other for 5 years” teams drops below 6 because of the league shrinking?

Specifically (hopefully): is there any NCAA precedent for waiving negative impact to the survivors?

  215. RainbowCliff August 21, 2010 2:38 pm

    Kekoa !

Received the AWESOME Hawaii banner on Wednesday as I thank you for the house warming gift !

It will be in my front area as I’m contemplating on the best area to put it as the 29th house warming and birthday celebration is approaching real fast as I and Mrs. Rainbow Cliff are excited for those invited guest’s who will be gracing us with their prescence !

Got UCLA and USC across from me and three USC alums four houses down as I can’t wait to see their faces when the Hawaii Warrior flag will be waving in clear view of their jogging route going by my house !

Will send you picture of it’s sweeping and surging movement !

    Mahalo for your GREATNESS !

  216. Shoko August 21, 2010 2:39 pm

Oak TD on first possession. Cambell on QB sneak. Gooood.

  217. Shoko August 21, 2010 2:41 pm

    GT,

I think someone mentioned if the WAC losses another team and drops below six, NCAA might waiver their AQ status considering the circumstances.

  218. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2010 2:43 pm

Does anybody have the link for a better feed than the “ZONEIN” site? The video is very jumpy there.

    Anybody?

  219. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2010 2:44 pm

Oh yeah, that would be a link for the Raider’s game.

  220. Shoko August 21, 2010 2:45 pm

Sheesh, Jay Cutler sacked back to back plays.

  221. POHS August 21, 2010 2:47 pm

anyone who wants to watch the RAIDERS game! Maybe COLT will get in the game!

its a very nice HD feed!

    http://www.veetle.com/index.php/channel/view#4c6fe79a635fb

  222. Shoko August 21, 2010 2:54 pm

    DPK,

Did you download that Veetle software yet?

  223. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2010 2:55 pm

    POHS –

    Excellent! Thanks so much!

  224. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2010 2:56 pm

    Got it Shoko, Mahalo!

  225. SteveM August 21, 2010 2:57 pm

Am watching the Vettle feed now. Good. Linked from the Channelsuring site.

Vettle wanted to install a plug-in, though. Looks OK.

  226. CoolEthan August 21, 2010 2:58 pm

Dang- My best’st Filipino cheer…..Jesuus…Thats a Berry Berry charp feed POHAS.

Though it buffers on me occ., I likey

    Mabuhai

  227. Ralph August 21, 2010 2:59 pm

is veetle better than channel surfing?

Raider Nation – Hail to the Silver and Black, beat the Bears, we’re up 10-0

  228. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:04 pm

Wow, is Chicago going to let Oak score on every drive?

  229. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:04 pm

Channel surfing website involves you to download Veetle to watch online.

  230. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:04 pm

Not a fan of downloading unknown streaming plugins.

On the other hand, is listening to the Chipmunk Radio feed on Live 105 Oakland any better? Hm..

  231. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:05 pm

    Well, it IS funny. 🙂

    Let Colt play!

  232. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2010 3:05 pm

    Great downfield block by Samson!

  233. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:06 pm

Uh, guess not, Cambell threw int.

  234. CoolEthan August 21, 2010 3:07 pm

Veetle is no prob.for streaming plugs. No tracking cookies, etc.

Sure lets you watch the games.

Chipmunk radio? Is that am feed? Reminds me of childhood days with that name.

  235. Jayson August 21, 2010 3:07 pm

Wow, that is a really nice feed!

  236. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:07 pm

Okay, that the Oakland I remember. 😆

  237. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:10 pm

http://live105.radio.com/ >> Click the game link >> Enjoy the chipmunks, at least on Firefox.

  238. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:11 pm

FM chipmunks too, from what I can tell.

  239. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:12 pm

Jason seems to having a better outting. But then again, the Bears defense is, uh, missing in action.

  240. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:14 pm

Granted, he got the rushing TD, but 7/11, 0TD, 1INT looks an awful lot like his last season…

The OC/offensive system carousel hasn’t helped Campbell, of course.

  241. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:17 pm

The odds are against Colt like usual, but so far the bar’s pretty low. 55% completions, no INTs and just one TD will put him in the mix performance-wise. Let’s hope he sees some playing time after the half!

  242. Last Call August 21, 2010 3:17 pm

My Norton Security check any downloads first before installing and Veetle checks out OK but my feed keeps freezing even with high speed connection

  243. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:17 pm

7 of 13 for 49 last week. However, its still early. We’ll see.

  244. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:18 pm

You can always uninstall the software and clear cookies.

  245. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2010 3:19 pm

I expand the Veetle Stream to full screen and its flawless in HD. Great feed! Thanks again POHS!

  246. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:21 pm

Just a question, the feed last well on Channel Surfing was delayed, at according the post during the game. I think Veetle might have been the solution for that delay.

  247. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:22 pm

Duh, apparently my post didn’t involve a question. So disregard.

  248. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:22 pm

Seriously, the chipmunk radio feed is hilarious.

  249. Last Call August 21, 2010 3:23 pm

What is with that chipmunk stuff? Can’t understand a word

  250. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:24 pm

No kidding. This is streaming audio done horribly wrong. It’s buffering, playing catch-up at 2x speed constantly, then a delay, over and over again.

  251. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:26 pm

I better stop posting. My comments are so incoherent, as usual. I’ll just read any input and keep my posting to once sentence. Safer that way.

  252. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:28 pm

So, would it be fair to assume that Channel surfing is still experiencing the delay?

  253. Last Call August 21, 2010 3:28 pm

Screw it I was never a Raiders fan anyway.

  254. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:29 pm

To those watching, is the Bears D that good, is JC that bad with short passes today, or what?

  255. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 3:29 pm

Yup, my veetle freezes, too, in one second…tho I downloaded

—got a very clear freeze pic tho…

Drats…my security warned me twice not to do it.

I think they’re right. Hopefully I can uninstall and not

    have any hidden trojan viruses.

  256. CoolEthan August 21, 2010 3:31 pm

I think DPK has a better puter than me ( us)

  257. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:31 pm

Shame that ESPN Radio isn’t picking it up. Guess that’s how it is with preseason games.

  258. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:31 pm

Jay Cutler is terrible. They should think about getting Colt.

  259. OldDiver August 21, 2010 3:36 pm

Jason Campbell looks like he did at Washington. Big, tall and so so.

  260. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 3:37 pm

Guess being on a hill like punchbowl helps?

  261. Last Call August 21, 2010 3:37 pm

I ran two separate security checks on it and it was clean . It’s easy to remove the program through the Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs.

  262. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:38 pm

    The Internet rules.

As long as you got Flash, I guess, check out this radio link:

    http://player.streamtheworld.com/liveplayer.php?callsign=CMNRAIDERS

    No chipmunks!

Yes, it is a link from strangers, but hey, no installed plugins I can see at least and no alarms from my software/browser.

  263. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:39 pm

Thoroughly mediocre. Any sensible team would play Colt next half, it’s a risk-free proposition. Of course, the Raiders ARE controlled by Al Davis…

  264. Last Call August 21, 2010 3:43 pm

Thanks BowsForever something that actually works .

  265. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 3:45 pm

    The internet rules, BowsForever!

Thanks—radio is clear and smooth all the way from Chicago?

  266. OldDiver August 21, 2010 3:45 pm

The Oakland game thread is nothing like the Redskins thread. The Redskin fans are some of the rudess, cheap shot and funny guys in the league. Oakland’s message boards seem to be more of a wine and cheese crowd.

  267. CoolEthan August 21, 2010 3:46 pm

    Good one Ipu.

    >> Kid being on the hill-

  268. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:48 pm

    Uhoh, Satele hurt?

  269. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:49 pm

    Doesn’t look serious.

  270. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:50 pm

Let’s hope not, Satele has got to be one of the best players on the team.

  271. CoolEthan August 21, 2010 3:51 pm

    Gotta luv American radio feed.

    One of our last freebies.

    God bless am radio waves

  272. BowsForever August 21, 2010 3:51 pm

…uh, maybe you can sit this one out ’til Satele comes back, Colt.

  273. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 3:51 pm

New center and Jason Cambell fumbles…

    Heal Satele, Heal!

  274. Shoko August 21, 2010 3:52 pm

Well, he walked off the field on his won accord. That’s always good sign.

  275. Ralph August 21, 2010 3:59 pm

i was watching on channel surfing then I get a message that to continue I got to download veetle software, I did but it froze and posted a note that it will back on the air in 2 minutes. Dang, what is happening.

  276. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:00 pm

Jay Cutler throws short td off that fumble on 4th down…

and goes for two extra points…Chicago 14, Oakland 13…

  277. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2010 4:03 pm

    Ralph –

This is POHS’ feed. It’s working great for me.

    http://www.veetle.com/index.php/channel/view#4c6fe79a635fb

  278. OldDiver August 21, 2010 4:04 pm

That Campbell fumble was off this hands, a little to the side but handleable. Too bad about Satele’s injury.

  279. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:05 pm

Raiders hit by a chopblock penalty had to punt…

Cutler trying to score before halftime but is sacked.

But scrambles and completes a nice pass…

Bears Chester Taylor screen pass reception into Raider’s territory.

  280. Shoko August 21, 2010 4:05 pm

    Ralph,

Clear your cookies and remove the initial download and reload he software.

  281. Shoko August 21, 2010 4:06 pm

    Ralph,

Clear your cookies and remove the initial download and reload the software.

  282. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:07 pm

    Cutler sacked again (4th time)…

  283. Last Call August 21, 2010 4:08 pm

I cleared my cookies around midnight.

  284. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:09 pm

    Shoko,

I cleared my cookies first and it did not work.

    So I uninstalled it.

But don’t trust to try it again.

Ralph, it that works let us know.

    Thanks.

Radio is great…Bows Forever #265 has the link

  285. OldDiver August 21, 2010 4:18 pm

This Nfl offense is rather boring next to the run & shoot.

  286. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:19 pm

Well, now the radio is silent.

I suspect halftime feed is cut.

    Should be back up soon.

  287. Shoko August 21, 2010 4:19 pm

    Ipu,

The thing with downloads, I usually uninstall and reinstall again. I really don’t think there is anything malicious with these programs. They usually don’t always beta test their software to the extent where they fix the problems, but its always good to try again; at least twice. After that, I would give up.

  288. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:35 pm

    Thanks Shoko…

still waiting for the radio feed to come back on line, too.

Since Ralph was first to blog this morning at 2:30-ish,

    he is probably asleep now…

  289. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:41 pm

Raiders up 20 to 14 in 3rd quarter.

    Quarterback Boller playing.

    Bears had to punt.

    Boller has ball around midfield…

  290. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:43 pm

Boller sandwiched and has his helmet knocked off…

    9 yard sack…Raiders hafta punt…

  291. Last Call August 21, 2010 4:44 pm

Radio feed is working for me .

    http://player.streamtheworld.com/liveplayer.php?callsign=CMNRAIDERS

  292. BowsForever August 21, 2010 4:48 pm

If we don’t see Colt 4th qtr, I’m worried about his chances…though with an organization like the Raiders, who knows how it would’ve been anyway, despite Satele and some fellow Redskins all being there.

  293. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 4:51 pm

    Bears punt…

    Boller back in…3rd and seven…

    no Colt yet…

  294. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2010 5:02 pm

I don’t see Colt making any warm up throws, he’s still got his basebal cap on. I wonder if they’re gonna play him?

  295. 808ike August 21, 2010 5:03 pm

    4th Q.

    Showtime for Colt!

  296. 808ike August 21, 2010 5:05 pm

    DPK,

May be like last week. That sucks!

  297. Steve August 21, 2010 5:08 pm

If Colt does not play today, he will definitely play next Saturday. That game will be televised by KHNL, Raiders vs 49’ers.

  298. Curt August 21, 2010 5:14 pm

If Colt does not play today, that’s not good. That to me means the Coach is not really serious about keeping Colt and is only biding his time until Gradkowski heals up. The Raiders will be getting the ball shortly; we’ll see.

  299. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:17 pm

    27-17 Raiders lead…

    4th quarter…

qb Dan Lafever for Bears keeping Colt off the field.

but finally Bears kick field goal….

    commercial…

and the quarterback for the Raiders now is:

    but stupid announcers not saying…

    oh darn…its Kyle Boller

  300. Curt August 21, 2010 5:18 pm

Not good. Boller back in. That says that Coach Cable really is not that interested in seeing if Colt is worth checking out. So sad. Give him chance coach.

  301. Curt August 21, 2010 5:22 pm

I think Cable is really trying hard to win this meaningless game. It’s apparently more important to do that than to see if Colt can perform.

  302. Curt August 21, 2010 5:23 pm

Raider intercept and get the ball back on the Bears 10.

  303. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:24 pm

    Raiders intercept LaFever…

So now will we see Colt???

    yes!!!!!

  304. Curt August 21, 2010 5:24 pm

    Wow. They put in Colt!

  305. Slugger August 21, 2010 5:25 pm

    Colt is up. Go, Colt!

  306. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:25 pm

    Colt sacked…

  307. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:26 pm

    So field goal…

    5:12 left to play…

  308. 808ike August 21, 2010 5:26 pm

    Give Colt 1 more chance.

  309. Curt August 21, 2010 5:27 pm

Darn–Colt sacked. Apparently, no one was open. On the positive side, good to hear he didn’t force it. Raiders get 3 pts on a field goal.

  310. Steve August 21, 2010 5:28 pm

Was that his only chance to pass?

  311. Curt August 21, 2010 5:29 pm

Darn. Gotta go now. I have to join my honey for dinner. I hope Colt gets another shot shortly. Go Colt.

  312. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:31 pm

Raiders block punt for a safety…

so Colt can’t get on the field yet…if at all…again

  313. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:33 pm

Oh wait, a free kick, so Raiders do get the ball…

Colt hands off to Michael Bennet who runs to 21 yard line

    44 yard gain!

  314. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:34 pm

    penalty saves Brennan pass…

  315. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:35 pm

2 minute warning as Bennet is sacked…

  316. RainbowCliff August 21, 2010 5:35 pm

Colt Brennan just TWO plays and out !

WOW how will this guy ever show what he can do IF

he can’y get quality time !

Sorry Raider HEAD coach shaking his head because

Brennan couldn’t score in that situation as I knew

from day one that going to the Raider was a can’t

win situation as Cable been on the hot seat of losing his

job and the Raiders have been LOSERS for quite some time !

Now less then 4:00 to play a safety has happen and that

just means Brennan to hand the football off and be safe with

    the ball.

Two minute warning as I gather mop up time is better then no time !

    Raiders Sucks !

  317. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:38 pm

nicely done fake by Colt announcer said…

  318. wafan August 21, 2010 5:39 pm

Dang. Too bad Colt could not get them in for the TD.

  319. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:39 pm

Colt wants to score, but Raiders let clock run out.

    Game over…

    Next week, baby!

  320. Shoko August 21, 2010 5:39 pm

Oh well, nice job Colt. Don’t give up. Play the Niners and hopefully Colt gets another shot. Good night, Warriors.

  321. wafan August 21, 2010 5:41 pm

Does Mr. A-House cheer for the 49’ers when Colt is in? Or do they cheer for Colt?

    Hmmmmmm.

  322. Ipu Man August 21, 2010 5:44 pm

    A house divided?

  323. 808ike August 21, 2010 5:47 pm

    ESPN stat for Colt.

    1-1 14 yds. 118.8 rating

  324. RainbowCliff August 21, 2010 5:48 pm

A crying shame Colt could not get a chance to score

as no playing time with SORRY head Raider Coach walking

off the field with 30 seconds left NOT even thinking to

give this young man an opportunity to shine !

Won’t be any thing different next Saturday against the 49ers

regardless being televise in Hawaii as Raiders and Cable are

HORRIBLE when it comes to sensitivity as NFL is a business

and this SAD head coach all he is going to do is give Campbell

MORE minutes with Boller backing him up as when Raiders keep

winning his job is secured for the time being with Al Davis watching

    very closely !

    Raider Nation Sucks !

  325. Ralph August 21, 2010 5:48 pm

IPUMan once the channel restarted I was too afraid to loose the feed so I didn’t switch back to the WB. Veetle started out real shaky, lots of red and green dots like confetti all over the screen, so i logged off and logged back onto channel surfing, wala, I get a picture that looks like HD and a control button to make it full screen. Perfect reception, very clear HD, no freezes or reloading icon in the middle of the picture. Prior to veetle my picture was a 3 x 5 viewing picture, I said to myself, no wonder no one watches channelsurfing, damn picture is too small.

  326. 808ike August 21, 2010 5:50 pm

    Bess’

    3 rec. 31yds.

  327. 808ike August 21, 2010 5:52 pm

    RainbowCliff,

Did you get the book by Wooden?

  328. wafan August 21, 2010 5:53 pm

    Ralph . . .

For some of us away from Hawai’i it is the only way, sometimes, to see any UH games that may be carried.

The funniest one was the game last year where we got the scoreboard feed for an away game. Graphics, ads, and cheers included.

  329. Ralph August 21, 2010 5:55 pm

I don’t understand why the Raiders don’t play more of the reserves, on august 31 the roster is cut to 75, by sept 4 it is 53 on the final roster + practice squad. Two weeks for the final cut line, hopefully Brennan and Rodd get more PT in the next game.

  330. wafan August 21, 2010 5:55 pm

Congratulations to Umu and best of luck to Manu!

  331. Ralph August 21, 2010 5:57 pm

is CBS college sports a subscription type program or similar to channel surfing and free. I saw a schedule there that has Army vs Hawaii.

  332. RainbowCliff August 21, 2010 6:05 pm

808 Ike: I never got Wooden book as I remember you

stating on the blog that you would give to me IF you

    were selected.

I don’t know if it was sent to the Wooten Center or my

po box address as my mail box at the Center has not received

any package as I pretty much get everything there from you

good folks regrdless of contents and size.

My po box the wife goes there every day and gives me ALL

my mail as no book has ever showed up !

I hope it has not got lost !

  333. al August 21, 2010 6:11 pm

not getting in to the endzone had nothing to do with colt’s inabilities.

at that point in the game no coach would have rubbed it in when they did not have to score nor run another play. the playcalling on the last drive should also have been expected by all. conservative plays, run more and pass only if you wanted a first down.

the good part is that he did what he was supposed to do and completed that one pass.

  334. madeinhawaii August 21, 2010 6:20 pm

I think the main thing for Colt today was that he looked comfortable in the pocket…and he didn’t make any mistakes. He got sacked once, but didn’t lose the ball and they got the three…

    Positives

    1. I was impressed when Colt pulled it down instead of forcing it. Shows maturation in his decision making.

    2. On the fake hand off and roll out, he did it perfectly. Looked quick and mobile. Threw on the run to his LEFT and hit the back in stride…guy couldn’t help but catch it. Just looked solid.

I just hope he goes off on the 49ers so they remember and pick him up later.

I guess Colt ended up with a QB rating of 118, or something like that.

Too bad the NCAA and NFL don’t use the same QB formula. Sure, it’s a different game, but it would be easier to make some comparisons. And, no, I’m not saying he should receive extra credit for a 1-for-1 day. It just reminded me that both organizations use different formulas.

  343. Dennis Halloran August 21, 2010 7:36 pm

Mwc still could invite, remember TCU coach said wait two weeks!

  344. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2010 7:41 pm

If the WAC had not disbanded the first time, then Boise State, Nevada, Utah State, New Mexico State, Idaho don’t become WAC members.

The question when Boise applied for membership was: Does Boise bring the WAC up or does the WAC bring Boise up?

At the time, Boise had the Humanitarian Bowl and it was regularly an opening-round host for NCAA basketball tournament. But its program was in its infancy, so, it was a wash.

With Nevada, the Pack definitely was helped by joining the WAC.

Same with Louisiana Tech. Tech used to be an independent. It couldn’t get anybody to come to its stadium. It was known for losing but not getting blown out by big schools.

So is this like the Jackson 5? Do you turn your back on the label that made you a star?

Regarding Veetle: Good to hear that you liked the quality, once the kinks got worked out. That said,

How fast is your Internet connection? I would love to view games in streaming HD quality. However, since I only have a 1Mbps DSL connection from Verizon, there is no way that’s happening here. My connection evens struggles to stream low-quality ESPN360 (now ESPN3) content reliably.

I would think you would need 5Mbps minimum for reliable HD streaming, though you might be able to get by with a 3Mbps connection. Too bad I can’t get that with DSL, and while switching to Comcast would get me a 15Mbps connection, that would run about $70/month and I’d have to contend with that darn monthly bandwidth ceiling of 250GB.

    Ralph,

CBS College Sports (CBSCS) is a nation-wide sports channel that has so-so distribution. In Hawaii it is available via the sports pack add-on. I’m lucky that my satellite subscription includes it in HD so I’ll get to see that game in HD.

CBSCS used to be called CSTV.

  356. Garret August 21, 2010 9:31 pm

    Manoa Mist,

If JD did say that WCC would take UH’s non-football teams, I think that makes going independent feasible. If UH can make sure that its non-football teams have a conference to play in, I’d favor going independent over staying in the WAC.

  357. Anja Nagorski August 21, 2010 9:36 pm

I’m a spammer using my 83rd alias. This is how I spend my Saturday nights.

  358. Garret August 21, 2010 9:39 pm

One thing that hasn’t been talked about is that going independent would require a national channel (ESPN or VS or CBSCS or some other channel) to show all of UH’s games..which means that there would be *no PPV. That means that to break even on TV, UH has to get around $3.2 million–if I remember correctly, UH gets $2.8 million from PPV and $400k from the WAC’s TV deal. The K5/Oceanic TV deals would be out also, so UH would probably need even more than that.

Right now UH doesn’t have to pay 4 conference teams to come to Hawaii every season. The going rate for nonconference games for D-IA teams is $1 million or agreeing to home-and-home deals. If UH wants more than 7 home games (1 D-IAA school, 6 D-IA schools each year at Aloha Stadium), UH will have to shell out $1 million or more each game.

SJSU’s biggest game of the year for a long time was its game against Stanford. SJSU recently broke their contract with Stanford for a $1 million paycheck game. To get an SJSU-level nonconference opponent to go to Aloha Stadium without agreeing to go to their stadium it would cost UH $1 million plus expenses. UH can take paycheck games, but the profit will be less since the travel costs are taken out of the $1 million payment…schools like SJSU and NMSU have much lower travel costs to Big 10 and SEC schools than UH would have.

So, everything comes down to money. UH would need a TV contract of about $8 million per year to make up for the TV revenue lost from PPV/WAC/K5/Oceanic and to pay opponents to come to Hawaii.

  359. Garret August 21, 2010 9:43 pm

For comparison purposes, Notre Dame gets $9 million per year from NBC. Cable channels pay less than networks on a per-game basis, so any cable channel would pay UH less than what Notre Dame gets from NBC. If UH is going for the late-night time slot, it should be noted that commercial time late at night is worth a *lot* less than during prime time or during the day on weekends…so, TV dollars would be less.

To put things in perspective, if Notre Dame played in the late night time slot, their TV deal would probably be between $3 million and $4.5 million. UH gets more than that now from TV.

  360. Garret August 21, 2010 9:44 pm

Here is a link that references Notre Dame’s TV contract.

The current contract that expires in 2010 is reported to be worth $9 million a year.

  361. Garret August 21, 2010 9:47 pm

It appears to me that TV revenue would be *less* if UH goes independent than what UH gets now, primarily because PPV would have to end. There is no way that a national TV channel would give UH a deal and let UH black their channel out in Hawaii.

So, if we assume that UH has the same TV value as Notre Dame, UH will get less TV money as an independent. The question is how much less value does UH have to TV than Notre Dame has…and how much less TV money UH will have as an independent.

I’m sure that JD has crunched these numbers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen UH fans here or in other forums do so.

  362. Garret August 21, 2010 9:50 pm

We should remember that ESPN has already given all of their high-dollar time slots to the SEC and Big 10…only the lesser valued time slots on the lesser channels are available now. If BYU goes independent, they will get the best time slot available left.

From the numbers being thrown around, it appears that BYU has more TV value to ESPN than Notre Dame has to NBC. That is pretty amazing to me.

  363. Garret August 21, 2010 9:51 pm

Study found that Olympians who won the bronze medal are *happier* with their finishes than Olympians who won the silver medal. This type of phenomenon is called counterfactual thinking–when they win the bronze, they look downward and are happy they got a a medal, but when they win the silver they look upwards and fixate on not getting the gold.

The WAC has apparently formed a task force membership committee and they had their first conference call yesterday. The Barnes references below is Utah State’s AD. Karl Benson personally contacted a Texas State fan site to answer their questions…that kind of indicates one of the schools they will invite.

Barnes: “We’ll move quickly to look at whatever options we have to improve the WAC and that is the focus.” about 9 hours ago via web

Barnes: WAC has formed a task force membership committee. First conference call was yesterday.

Utah State’s AD sure sounds like he’s trying to get the MWC to invite them again so that he can accept this time.

Barnes on talking w/ BYU: “(We’re) making sure we have all of our lines open and all of our options open.”

USU AD Barnes on contact w/ BYU: “My phone has been burning up. It has been burning up with both calls in and out.”

Barnes on potential of USU joining the MWC: “Every option is in play.”

    LOL…

Three Texans, Slim, Billy-Bob and Bubba died and went to heaven.

At the pearly gates, they were met by St. Peter, who explained

that although it was late and God had retired for the evening, he

had asked Albert Einstein to show them around so they wouldn’t get

bored before they met God in the morning. After Einstein had

introduced himself to Slim, he asked, “By the way, Slim, what was

your IQ when you were alive?”

    “159”, said Slim.

“Great!”, said Einstein. We’ll discuss my general theory of

relativity and maybe a little unified field theory as I show you

    around.”

“What an exciting opportunity!”, said Slim.

Einstein then introduced himself to Billy-Bob, and when he was

done he said, “Tell me, Billy-Bob – what was your IQ when you were

    alive?”

    “141”, said Billy-Bob.

“Good,” said Einstein. “If you’d like, we can discuss a little

mathematics and philosophy as I point out the heavenly sights.”

“Nothing I’d like better!” was Billy-Bob’s reply.

After Einstein had introduced himself to Bubba, he asked, “What

was your IQ when you were alive, Bubba?”

    “58” said Bubba.

Punching him on the arm, Einstein said, “Hey, Bubba – How ’bout

    them Cowboys!”

Which is easier to travel to:

    Texas State or Utah State?

    Ipu Man,

Texas State is in San Marcos, which is between Austin and San Antonio. You could fly into either big city and drive for an hour.

There aren’t many direct flights between Austin and HNL, which is why I always ended up having to fly to Houston or Dallas first, though 3 times I flew from Austin to St. Louis to Honolulu because it was cheaper.

I think that it would take less time and be cheaper to travel to Logan, but San Marcos would be much easier to get to than Ruston.

  382. keoninana August 22, 2010 3:59 am

Not many people see this but going Independent in Football might be the best thing to happen for Hawaii. We can now schedule quality strong opponents, will get on TV more and ESPN would love us for Saturday night college football, which will all lead to quality recruits. Fresno, Nevada, San Jose, UNLV and SDSU will want to play us because Hawaii Fans travel well in the West Coast. Add in Navy and Army which just makes sense for Hawaii and then the BYU and half of the Pac 10 schools, such as WA, WA State, OR, Oregon state, USC – we have played them in the past, games with UCLA too.. even schools such as Portland State, UC Davis, Weber State, who we played before can play us again. During November, we can schedule a bye or 2 or the service academies, Army, Navy and even beg Notre Dame, for a 2-1, even though they might not play us again.

For other sports, WCC is more attractive than Big West because of Men’s basketball programs such as Gonzaga, Pepperdine, St. Mary’s. However, baseball can maybe go to Big West..

  383. Garret August 22, 2010 4:17 am

#358…don’t forget to add in the gurantee money for when we do travel. so six away games should also bring in a million per game which off sets some of what we are paying out for the home games at the aloha.

    Al,

The only time that UH would get $1 million for a road game is if the team it travels to won’t have to play at Aloha Stadium. But then UH will have to pay $1 million to get a team to travel to Aloha Stadium without UH going to their stadium.

That is pretty similar to how home-and-home deals are set with UH getting $300k when they go on the road and giving $300k when the team plays at Aloha Stadium.

The numbers that JD provided last season were that UH earns about $700k per home game. So, if UH takes a body-bag game on the road for $1 million and UH spends $300k in travel expenses, then UH earns the same $700k that they get from a conference home game.

If UH earns $700k per home and and has to give out $1 million to get a team to play at Aloha Stadium without UH having to go on the road, UH comes out behind. Maybe that is why JD likes home-and-home deals…but that means that UH will only earn money on half of their games (the home games). If UH schedules home-and-home deals with big-name schools like USC, UH makes more because UH can raise ticket prices and get more people to go to the stadium.

UH can only afford to “buy” home games against D-IAA teams (they cost $300k instead of $1 million) and against D-IA teams that want to take minimal money (say $300k) because they want to play at Aloha Stadium. However, everybody is hurting with their budgets right now so those teams will be harder to find.

Wisconsin signed a deal to play at Hawaii with no home game in return, but then they realized that they make millions for a home game and nothing on the trip to Aloha Stadium and offered UH $1 million to play the game at their stadium instead. Notice that the Hawaii exception wasn’t worth a thing to a school like Wisconsin because they needed to keep their bye weeks and they tried to change the game to be at Wisconsin.

One disturbing thing to note is that big-name schools are now able to get 2 home games for exchange for 1 road game. For example, Wyoming and BYU will play in Austin twice and just get 1 home game each against Texas. BSU is even having to agree to 2-for-1 deals with Pac-10 schools if they want them to schedule them in the future. If UH has to play 2 road games for 1 home game, UH will play less than half of their games at home and the economics don’t work out too well. If Texas is choosing between having 4 out of 6 games in Austin when they play BYU/Wyoming or having 3 out of 6 games in Austin when they play UH, which option are they going to pick?

I still want UH to go independent. But these types of issue HAVE to be addressed if it is going to work out for UH. Getting basically no additional TV money (due to the loss of the PPV money) and having to pay big money to get teams to play nonconference games in Hawaii is a worry. Having UH’s games all on free TV is a worry since PPV might encourage some to go to the stadium. Of course, if UH plays more appealing teams (such as the academies more often), then attendance would be higher and that brings in money.

  384. Garret August 22, 2010 4:32 am

For comparison purposes, these are the computer ratings that different teams have during the current BCS evaluation period (2008/2009/2010/2011, so this is 2008/2009):

    Fresno state: 53.5

    Nevada: 53

    UH: 70.5

    Lower number is better.

It’s all about money when you think about it; and if you for a moment could digress, BIG College Sports is BIG BUCKS. In all essence, especially in the teams in the proverbial Top 10, Top 20…it is all about revenues. If you were to agree with that premise, one might surmise that the most exploited component in this equation is the ‘athlete’. Think about it……….and that is a sad dichotomy on college sports as it is today……

I’d kinda like to revisit the previously mentioned idea of playing games on neutral sites (like in California, or even in Vegas). Wonder what it might cost us to host/co-host a game there when the home team has a bye week. Probably have a minimum-required amount of tickets to be sold, amongst other things. I mean, if we could find a situation where we play one school, and the following week is their bye week, but we stay in town to play another team in that same stadium. We could save money, and possibly have a greater selection of opponents who’d have less travel time and expenses. Plus, we might possibly make as much or more as a regular home game if it could be worked out right.

    Just wondering…

Good Morning Tsaikos! I’ve got some last minute begging to do. We need one more person to sign up for the blog fantasy football league. The live draft is online in 4 hours. Email me at djmitcho at yahoo dot com if you wanna fill that last spot. Mahalo!

Sampson the fast little guy from Florida wears Owen’s

number 2 Jersey. Here’s hoping he razzle dazzles SC

and nationwide tv. Wonder if he is learning the haka?

  403. Pomai August 22, 2010 8:06 am

With all that is going on we still haven’t heard anything from the NCAA, why? We have six schools that are in deep trouble an that means we have a heck of a lot of student athlete’s who college careers are in trouble. It is time for this Governing body to step up to the plate an take control of things so that these kids aren’t screwed. It’s time for the powers to be to put their foot down on all these money hungry people inside and outside of the colleges trying to get as much money off these kids backs.

And yes I would be just as upset even if UH was not involved, it is time to put the brakes on this runaway train called College Sports.

…if BYU decides independence, then things become much easier for us… No doubt the mwc is trying to negotiate concessions as we speak….my guess is that they go independent….the potential is too tempting…

  410. whitey August 22, 2010 8:32 am

according to this am article on BYU, Fresno wants a guarantee from BYU on games and this is what is stalling BYU move to independency. i cannot see how this is valid anymore since Fresno is going to the MWC and has no say in WAC games, or it could be that Fresno wants to use this so it can get out of the $5 buyout.

  411. roysan16 August 22, 2010 8:39 am

    JD,

Is this a good idea> Take all the football teams that opt going independent and then have a playoff system at the end of the season.

  412. whitey August 22, 2010 8:39 am

am still thinking, would a religious based school use other schools to further their own ambition and this includes lying to them??????

  413. Old School Dave August 22, 2010 9:43 am

Navy HC Niumatalolo warns against BYU going independent- says it’s not such an easy thing.

    #383,

    Garret,

Ok if it costs us $300,000 to travel and we are willing to “buy” a home game from a team willing to take $300,000 instead of the $1M to play here…whats wrong with this picture?

Are the travel expenses THAT MUCH less for those schools? Why is that so if thats the case?

You will find numerous points your are capable of doing to improve the texture, elasticity and look of your skin. The first threesteps are an important foundation to flawless skin.No matter how a lot you pay for costly moisturizers that promise more youthful, healthier smooth skin, should you do not do the 3step cleansing regimen (cleanse, tone & moisturize), it is not likely that these products will have any real benefit to the skin on your face.

    1. Clean – Start your skin careregimen with a cleanser, by Mary KayCosmetics. That’s it! No additives that can cause irritation to your skin especially if you have sensitive skin. You can use the Mary Kay Cosmetics cleanser by simply wetting your face to rinse. Remove the cleanser by using a MaryKay® Facial Cleansing Cloths.

    2. Tone – Next, using cotton wool and Mary Kay Purifying Freshener to take off the last traces of facial cleanser and tone the skin. Have you tried Flower Waters? They arevery beneficial to the health of the skin as they are organic and contain anti-bacterial properties which prevent bacteria growing which in turn stops rashes and spots. Some also have astringent properties which close pores, and make the skin more toned. Some very good ones to try are good old water – cold, rosewater (good for mature skin too), orange flower water andorganicwitch hazel. Avoid toners with alcohol as these will dryout your skin which will skimp on your efforts.

    3. Moisturise – This step is imperative to healthy skin. You need to replace lost moisture to the skin and this is best done with Mary Kay Balancing Moisturizer Cream to suit your skin type. The most common are sensitive skin, oily skin, dry skin and combination skin, so look out for these descriptions when purchasing creams.

    4. Sun Cream – Stay out away from the sun – UV rays induce the skin to age, thereforeuse a factor that is proper for your skin type for greatest sun protection. Mary Kay Sun Care Collection is an exceptional choice.

    5. Avoid Free Radicals – What are they? See our write-up on free radicals for further facts, but in a few words the yare molecules that set off the skin to grow older and crease. Use Anti-oxidants tocombat free radicals that age the skin. Vitamin A, C & E are especially useful in addition to coconut and olive oil. A handful of almonds are crammed with enough vitamin E to counteract free radicals.

    6. Water – yes, drinking water really does help to eliminate toxins and re-hydrate your skin. Approximately 2 litres per day (8x 250ml glasses).

    7. Serums – These are nourishing oils with an ingredient to help carry the oils into the much deeper levels of the skin so theyenhance the tone and elasticity. It is best to use the treatment twice a day, once in the morning a few minutes before you moisturise and again before you go to bed so that it can do its work whilst you sleep. Mary Kay Cosmetics TimeWise® Replenishing Serum+C is an excellent choice.

    8. Face Mask – Use a Mary Kay TimeWise® Even Complexion Mask as a weekly treatment.

    9. Rest – Sleep is one of the best things you are able to do for your skin.

These suggestions should not be used as a one off, butincorporated into a regular skin care regimen for best effects.

Servicing your air conditioner on a regular basis will keep your vitality costs down. The better your air conditioning unit is running, the less resources it’ll use, thus, saving you moeny on energy bills. It’s also wise to preserve your unit routinely instead of pay major repair prices when it finally breaks down. A service call is very much cheaper than a replace the unit call.
