UH plan: 200 free playoff tickets to students

As part of student fees, UH-Manoa students do not have to pay for tickets to UH sporting events. The exception is the playoffs, which have restrictions on what are termed “comps.” That means students would have to be charged a nominal admission fee.

In response, the top-ranked volleyball Warriors are working on a plan to pay for 200 tickets to be distributed — for free — to the first 200 UH-Manoa students in line for the April 25 quarterfinals in the Stan Sheriff Center. The plan still needs to be finalized.

Meanwhile, the Warriors are expecting large crowds for matches against Stanford on Friday and Saturday. UH is selling tickets in the upper section, an area that has been blocked off this season.

    Only 200? Spartans had 300.

  2. Stephen Tsai April 8, 2015 8:52 am

    Jimmy:
There were many casualties in those Spartan battles.
Unfortunately, there were friendly-fire deaths. Friendly piercings?
Yep, history tells us that the guys in the back rows inadvertently hit the guys in the front row. This is what happens when the slower guys are in front. This is why Indy races have trial runs.

Would like to see a National Champion from the University of Hawaii.

When/who was the last National Champion from UH?

I remember the sailing team won a championship sometime after the men’s VB won their championship and then was stripped rudely by the meanies…men’s VB was stripped not the sailing team.

  6. Stephen Tsai April 8, 2015 9:04 am

    Jimmy:
    Stripped … sort of.
Costas Theocharidis was ruled to have been an amateur playing on a team that included professionals. But the rule has since changed, I think.
UH still is listed on the championship plaque at the NCAA headquarters. (The banner remains in Rich Sheriff’s office.)

I see the ad on the right side for Panda Express Chinese Spare Ribs. Is Panda Express really Chinese food?

Since I’m on the subject of Chinese, a Chinese guy goes into a London bank to change some currency. After receiving his money he asks, “How come I came in here with same amount of money as yesterday but today I get less Pounds in return?”
    The banker says, “Fluctuations.”
The Chinese guy yells, “Fluck u Blitish too.”

Well what do you know, guess what day it is?

I think the sailing team from UH won the last National Championship.

  8. jimmy the lock April 8, 2015 9:15 am

Costas Theocharidis, sounds like a member of Sparta’s 300.

Kawika…True story. There were about 3-4 kids from my elementary that went from 6th grade at Alvah Scott to 7th at Punahou. I took the entrance exam, and even did summer school on dole street. End of summer, my mom asks me how was summer school was, I said “fine”–to wit she asked is the work hard –to which I answered–“nah, not too hard”.

She says “good, I just wanted to see if you could get into Punahou–you starting in two weeks at Aiea Intermediate”.

My mom was gangster before there was gangsters…

I guess that’s why I’m seeing a lot of ads for a stand up work station, and a hide away exercise machine too!

A farmer needs his hay stacked up into piles on his field.
He hires a Chinese guy, a Hawaiian guy and a Portagee guy. Farmer leaves but before he does he tells the Hawaiian guy to use a broom and sweep the hay into piles. He tells the Portagee guy to use a rake and rake the hay into piles. He tells the Chinese guy to get the supplies.
Farmer comes back. Nothing has been done. He asks the Hawaiian guy why he never sweep? Never have broom, Hawaiian guy says. Farmer asks the Portagee guy why he never rake? Never have rake, Portagee guy says.
Well, “Where the hell is the Chinese guy?” the farmer yells.
Just then, the Chinese guy bursts out of a pile of hay and yells “Supplies!”

  29. Andrew April 8, 2015 11:15 am

Might as well start preparing transfer paperwork already

  30. HawaiiMongoose April 8, 2015 11:20 am

I’ll try to keep an open mind but this hire does not excite me. Eran has zero head coaching experience at any level. He’s done a good job as an assistant at St. Mary’s but was previously part of a Nash coaching staff that bombed. I expected the UH position to be sufficiently attractive to draw interest from more experienced coaches. I hope Matlin made the right choice.

  31. Andrew April 8, 2015 11:27 am

    29.

I everyone 100% confident that Matlin fully made that pick on his own? or is he jus the spokesperson?

  32. Tiki808 April 8, 2015 11:29 am

Front row? yea! Curiosity. Food also? Really.

  33. Tempmanoa April 8, 2015 11:29 am

Somehow this broke on national media (CBS sports, USA Today) over an hour ago, just picked up by Star Advertiser.
Ganot was the acting head coach for Coach Bennet who was suspended for NCAA violations– sound familiar. I like the choice.

Benji was always the subject of off court rumors, such that the athletic department kept an eye on him here and on road trips, this coming from media, including Dave Reardon, that never said what these problems were just made references to these problems as being significant. I did not think it would be Benji when he turned down the one year offer by UH and UH did not take him up when he reversed himself and offered to work on a one year contract.

  34. ArcumFortis April 8, 2015 11:40 am

I am disappointed that Benjy did not get his chance. I felt he earned it. His performance was not a projection of possibility but the actuality of a won loss record under extreme circumstances.

As a fan I have no information about other issues in Benjy’s life or his performance as a coach off the court. I assume that issues in these latter areas must have been a concern because otherwise this change doesn’t make any sense to me. This was the most entertaining mens BB team and season in a long time. I will miss Benji ball a lot. I wish the man well, hope he lands on his feet and send him thanks and aloha.

  35. 3-Prong April 8, 2015 11:41 am

Sooooo, Kawika, you were on the receiving end of some (“savez-vous”, he pronounced it “sabby-boo”, Father Chuck speaches too huh?!

  36. 3-Prong April 8, 2015 11:43 am

Oh well, back to a more structured offensive bb team. Hehe

    Go Bows!

  37. H-man April 8, 2015 11:59 am

Somehow I expected more when it was announced that UH received “substantial applicants” in the range of 40 or so that filed. But who knows, Ganot might deliver a 20-game winning season out of the chute. But I’m afraid he might be facing a huge rebuilding task ahead of him.

  38. oneseason April 8, 2015 12:00 pm

It’s too bad, but Matlin is tainted by this hire.

  39. ALLAN April 8, 2015 12:02 pm

  40. st. anthony trojan April 8, 2015 12:30 pm

Mongoose…. don’t think you can draw the caliber of coaches we all want… with possible sanctions hanging over our heads…….plus the circus n drama…always making for good fodder for the public to play with…purely idiotic…but always entertaining ne way…

If Matlin n Wallace are friends…surely he must have been consulted…

As for BT…..think his agent did not serve him well…he should have taken that 1 year deal.. n eat a little crow….n hide his pride… n just go out n prove next year he is a ok coach.. n work on clearing up his personal life…if there was ne thing to clear up…cuz he he could improve a little in conference.. n 20 wins…be a big plus 4 him…but who knows…ben-broom might not be around next year to call the shots…

  41. BigWave96744 April 8, 2015 12:40 pm

I think this is a great hire for the new AD Dave Matlin
    Mahalo Benjy and Aloha Eran

  42. Kama Krab April 8, 2015 12:46 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

I also like this hire. A young up and coming coach that knows how to win at the mid-major level. Head Coaching experience can only be had if someone gives you an opportunity. This is Eran’s chance and am sure he will make the most of it. Just gotta find solid assistant coaches that can help with recruiting as Eran has a solid background on the administrative side of running a basketball program.

  43. BigWave96744 April 8, 2015 12:55 pm

Riley Wallace’s flex offense so was lame that All it did was bring back 2 WAC Championships, 6 NIT appearances and 3 invites to the Big Dance.

Gib’s up tempo offense was so exciting he never advanced to the semis of the conference title and postseason saw 2 CITs

    Hmmmmm

  44. cappie the dog April 8, 2015 12:56 pm

    Eran Ganot.

    Okay.

Now let’s get on the recruiting trail and find somebody who can drain the three.

  47. kev-1 April 8, 2015 1:07 pm

UH basketball has definitely been more exciting since the days of Wallace. I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way at all. I agree with the poster above that said this was the most exciting UH team to watch on the court in a long time. I am thinking that it was BT’s lack of discipline and connection to Gib that resulted in him not getting the job.

I am also anticipating A LOT of players to transfer out.

  48. Boolakanaka April 8, 2015 1:18 pm

Let’s Imua with the man from the mighty Phineas the Phoenix—aka the Swarthmore mascot. Congrats Eran!

  49. cocobean April 8, 2015 1:27 pm

I like the fact that he’s a young coach who’s career is still on the rise.

When it comes to Hawaii basketball it helps to have Riley in your corner.

kev-1. Most of the soon to juniors already burned their redshirt year. It wouldn’t make too much sense for them to transfer, sit out and have just one year left to play.
Fleming may be another story. He has four to play three.

  50. hitman April 8, 2015 1:37 pm

aloha everyone !! oh well here we go again !! changing bb coaches !! so sad not to see BT not get his chance !! and to have them use that line again winning is not everything !! that’s bull !! i hope we are not paying more for this then 250,000 a season !! really seems that UH DOES NOT HERE THE PEOPLE!!

  51. BigWave96744 April 8, 2015 1:38 pm

Was Eran the point man to recruiting Australia?
If so I wonder if St Mary’s Aussie Forward Dane Pineau will follow coach.
Dane could redshirt and have 2 to play 2.
You know his dad, Brad, would be all for it.

  52. cappie the dog April 8, 2015 2:00 pm

    50.

While I was hunting down the whereabouts of Tyler Harville, I was blown away to see the name “Pineau” on the Gaels roster. Gotta be, I thought.

  53. cappie the dog April 8, 2015 2:02 pm

    46.

I think the fortunes of Riley Wallace would have been different had Logan Lee not transferred to Texas A&M after his freshman season.

  54. Ipu Man April 8, 2015 2:16 pm

Benjy Taylor was the best prospect for bb coach.
    Now it will be boring.
    How sad.

  55. islandman April 8, 2015 2:25 pm

51.–cappie– Tyler H went to Berry College

  56. Tiki808 April 8, 2015 2:27 pm

Mr. Dave Matlin could not have spared more to buy the students dinner? For only 200 x $10.95 + $2190. More, it will be a good sentiment for the SSC community. Better operations during the tournament. Would be a more productive night. I’d say a good investment for Matlin or Ben Jay to pay this off. Wouldn’t you agree for the MPSF April 25, 2015 tourney. More support for the volleyball community. A good price to pay are them.

  57. BigWave96744 April 8, 2015 2:27 pm

If Eran can get UH to St Mary’s play, I don’t care what offense they run

Here are ST Mary’s last 5 seasons when Eran was there
    2011 NIT
    2012 NCAA
    2013 NCAA
    2014 NIT
    2015 NIT

  58. Former UH Athlete April 8, 2015 2:32 pm

Don’t forget the 300 Spartans had 6,000 soldiers from other Greek States. Never the less, their toughness was impressive.

  59. Former UH Athlete April 8, 2015 2:34 pm

56… However, the gap between them and Gonzaga (the gold standard of the WCC) has been growing wider. SMC has dropped off a bit since Dellavedova graduated.

  60. Manoa Mist April 8, 2015 3:34 pm

Nice hire. Way too many stories out there about Benjy. If half of them are true, he was not the one. I do thank him for an exciting year of basketball and wish him the best.

  61. kev-1 April 8, 2015 4:27 pm

cocobean #48 … that is a good point about the redshirt year.

  62. Big Blue April 8, 2015 5:13 pm

Matlin better own up for his decision to hire this new coach. Let’s see if this new coach can match Taylors record in the preseason or his season record or his Big West Finals appearance.
If he can’t and is going to spend the next 2 seasons rebuilding what was not BROKE,then Matlin should be held accountable and do the honorable thing and resign.
Didn’t we just witness the NCAA Championship game. WINNING IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS..!!!

  63. Shoko April 8, 2015 5:13 pm

If Fleming already made his decision then I wish the young man the best of of luck. He’s a good player and will get other offers.

As for the other players that may be on the fence, they should at least listen to Ganot’s plan and direction for the program and keep and open mind. It would be a mistake to let their emotions affect their decision whether to stay or move on.

Wish the best of luck to Coach Taylor.

  64. oneseason April 8, 2015 5:21 pm

It seemed the more successful coach Taylor and the team was, the more negative some folks got about unspecified dirt. I can see that an argument could be made that St. Mary’s has been successful, and if an assistant coach was the primary reason for that success, that a good hire has been made. Having just had the UH WBB team beaten by St. Mary’s under rather bizarre officiating doesn’t make me overly charitable to St. Mary’s, but the real question is whether “the new guy” is going to succeed at UH. It just doesn’t give me much confidence when innuendo is used to justify a new hire. Not much character there, IMO.

  65. Inyoface April 8, 2015 5:28 pm

If I was a school on the mainland that needed a basketball coach, I’d hire Benjy.

  66. What??? April 8, 2015 5:38 pm

One guy not even on the job yet and someone wants him to resign.
Another guy not even on the job yet and others expect players to transfer out.
Easy to be successful with such positive support.

  67. beans April 8, 2015 6:04 pm

    I have mixed emotions………..
Couldn’t we have extended to Benjy a 1 year contract with an extension agreement base on some benchmarks? He pulled through for us this turbulent year and we don’t show our appreciation? Whats up? Where’s the Aloha? If we determined that he was fit to lead the team when we needed him, what changed to not have him continue on when he proved that he could coach?
We praise Beaman, and rightfully so, however Benjy came out of nowhere to lead the team to 20 wins. An even better coaching job in my opinion. And what did we show him…………………… other than the door?

  68. NorthShoreFan April 8, 2015 6:16 pm

Disappointed that BT didn’t get the opportunity to coach the Warriors. EG has some big shoes to fill. He has to hit the ground running and first thing is to meet with the players and lay out his plans. Calm the herd, show them what kind of basketball is in store and touch bases with recruits…unless he has his own group of guys lined up.
    No matter what…IMUA WARRIORS!

Thank you Coach Taylor, most exciting season in a long time!!! Best of Luck.

Good luck Coach Ganot, true supporters of UH athletics will always support the team and coach. Hope we can get some recruits (shooter, inside force) in at this last minute and keep all of our players. Hope to make into March Madness 2016!!!

To the players, thank you for staying here and committing to UH and Hawaii. We really appreciate you guys since you are what makes our team no matter who our coach is. The fans came to see you guys play, not the coach. We hope that you stay with our ohana and do bigger and better things this upcoming season. Issac (Agent Zero), you are our future in years to come (hope you stay). March Madness!!!

  73. H-man April 8, 2015 8:20 pm

Regarding men’s basketball, the smart choice was to retain Benjy Taylor. It’s a matter of timing. This past season, basketball home attendance at the SSC averaged 6,633 fans/game with two games exceeding 8,000 and 3 games exceeding 7,000 fans/game. That equates to a lot of money generated by basketball for 19 home games at the SSC. This success should have been nurtured. Strike while the iron is hot. But now with the coaching change, I can’t feel the same level of confidence. Too many uncertainties. Maybe Ganot will surprise me. But the odds say otherwise.

  74. beans April 8, 2015 8:52 pm

Question. Would BJ have kept Benjy?

  75. Winning April 8, 2015 9:06 pm

    BAH! HUMBUG!! GAHHNAAHT??

  76. tommui April 8, 2015 9:10 pm

The basketball team did real well this past season and much of the credit goes to Coach Benny. Great basketball coach. UH will miss him.

The problem is that winning, contrary to popular belief, is not everything. Not paying support payments is a character flaw. If Hawaii is suppose to have a clean program, it has to start with the Coach. Character does count.

  77. el burro sabio April 8, 2015 9:21 pm

All Benji had to do was take the one year deal and prove himself on and off the court.

  78. BigWave96744 April 8, 2015 9:42 pm

    #70, FYI St Mary’s is not D2
and this from Eran’s bio prior to this year

“He is involved in all phases of program operation and on-floor coaching. He also coordinates all recruiting and scouting efforts and is responsible for game scheduling. In 2013-14, he served as acting head coach for five games and compiled a 3-2 record.

Since his arrival back on campus prior to the 2010-11 season, the Gaels have remained one of the top programs in the country. Saint Mary’s is one of just four teams nationally to have won 25 games or more in each of the last six seasons and have appeared in the postseason in each of the last six years.
During Ganot’s tenure, SMC has posted an 80-22 overall record, earned two regular-season WCC titles, appeared in the WCC Tournament championship game each season and claimed two league players of the year.”
