is that the last scholarship available?

  3. ai-ee-soos May 8, 2009 2:01 am

ST: What’s the word on Kahai Lacount.

    Is he academically qualified ?

If so, is he in the process of registering for school?

Seems like a lot of time is slipping away.

  5. Ralph May 8, 2009 2:32 am

i guess symonds (sp?) isn’t being considered for placekicker…usually the kickers, etc. walked on and after a year the ones that stood out got the scholarship…Kelly walked on didn’t he, same as Grasso, right?

  6. Ralph May 8, 2009 2:36 am

seems like kahai has been out of football for a year trying to make up his grades. he was supposedly a tackle candidate at UH last fall and he didn’t enroll for academic reasons and he didn’t play JC ball last fall.

Brett is only a RS Frosh….
Maybe coach is wanting him to pack on some pounds.
Maybe by the time this new JC Kicker is done, Brett can step right in…

  10. BigWave96744 May 8, 2009 2:55 am

Kelly was suppose to have gotten a scholie out of Linfield HS.

I can only think of Jason Elam, Justin Ayat as kickers who have gottens scholies out of High School.

good luck today to UH Na Wahine waterpolo team on their quest for their first NCAA championship, the step is beating LMU today. Also, much luck and mojo to the Na Wahine softball team as they face a Nevada team that have dominated them over the last two seasons. The Bows baseball need a lot more than mojo going for them as their pitching has tanked as much as the teams hitting.

  14. BigWave96744 May 8, 2009 3:06 am

Corey Paclebar’s last name is pronouced Pack-Luh-Bar…
Braddah likes to Surf and Jam on his Ukulele.
His only ties to Hawaii is the many vacations his Ohana has taken here.

  15. Ralph May 8, 2009 3:08 am

Donovan’s trifecta-e bolla, Wilton and Nash….he blinked with Nash, time will tell. His committee is taking too long to decide on the coaches and not making the list of candidates public makes us wonder if we’re back to back room politics of the old boy network in selecting coaches…who’s the most qualified, doesn’t matter, it’s who you know in Hawaii or who stacked the committee of naysayers…

  16. wafan May 8, 2009 3:10 am

    Good Aloha Friday to all!

  17. wafan May 8, 2009 3:11 am

Kind of a sneaky early morning post, Mr. Tsai!

  18. Ralph May 8, 2009 3:14 am

JD will be able to put his mark on the UHAD by the coaches he hires..with success his budget woes will take care of itself. UC Irvine with Sperew in volleyball and Gillispie in Baseball turned their programs around in a very short time, now Irvine is a national power in both sports…I know, they are in the orange county hotbed for recruits but UC schools are not easy to get into and after their in, they got to maintain a high gpa to keep up with the rest of the student body.

  19. Ralph May 8, 2009 3:17 am

UC Irvine salary base should be something JD needs to look into when deciding on the base pay for our new coaches….the program can’t be called successful with coaches winning percentage around 52 to 56 percentile…fans won’t come out to watch mediocre teams, there is simply too much to do in Hawaii than watch a team in futility.

  20. Ralph May 8, 2009 3:20 am

Trapasso’s contract ends at the end of this season, so trifecta plus one….JD legacy has started, his administration will be judged by the success of his future hires because it comes down to making money for each sport or at least stop the bleeding and lower the red numbers…

  21. Ralph May 8, 2009 3:22 am

good morning wafan…..we haven’t seen las vegas post for a very long time….BigHilo been absent too…lots of people playing hooky.

  22. Ralph May 8, 2009 3:26 am

is recruiting over for the Na Wahine Basketball? the coaches are paid through this month…hopefully they at least compiled a list of recruits for the new coach to view film on…

  23. Ralph May 8, 2009 3:29 am

so we got a recruit, Krutz, that Idaho wanted…makes you wonder how come a lot of schools weren’t after this big fella and how come he is available so late in the recruiting season.

  28. Pauoa Boy May 8, 2009 4:36 am

Scott Enos a.k.a. “Scooter”, welcome to the Warrior Nation. Below is his personal page with his info and videos. Seems like were getting a pretty decent kicker.

    http://www.kicking.com/members/view.asp?id=Scooter

  29. brew808 May 8, 2009 4:42 am

“I’m completely embarrassed at the coaching job I’m doing and have done over the last couple weeks,” UH coach Mike Trapasso said. “I’m totally embarrassed I can’t get our guys to get out of this funk we’re in, pitching-wise in particular, and play better. I feel like I’m letting everybody down, letting our team down in that I can’t get our guys to get back to pitching the way we were and playing the way we were.

    Yup! šŸ™„ šŸ˜Æ šŸ™„

  30. Pauoa Boy May 8, 2009 4:47 am

Okay just pau watching Scooter’s highlight vids and he definitely has a strong leg. The good thing is that he is a hybrid kicker/punter type… He seems to have consistent boom and nice trajectory on kick-offs that would be a huge plus in kickoff coverage to allow our gunners to get down the field and unload!

Very nice recruiting for our special teams Coaches… Excited to see Alex Dunnachie booming punts downfield, if he ever gets a chance šŸ™‚ and now Scotty “Scooter” Enos added is awesome!!! I’m sure Coach Tormey has a huge grin from ear to ear over these two guys…au’ryte!

  40. Garret May 8, 2009 5:51 am

Jake Ingram talked about adjusting to the NFL.

“It’s not really overwhelming,” said sixth-round pick long snapper Jake Ingram, “it’s just a new experience and we’ve all got a long way to go. I’ve got a long way to go, a lot to learn. I thought I knew things in college, but I come here and I don’t have the slightest clue. I’m excited about learning from the coaches and working hard.”

  41. Garret May 8, 2009 5:53 am

El Pollo Loco has a funny commercial about how they will take KFC’s coupon on Mothers’ Day…remember, KFC’s coupon was good for two weeks (until they pulled the plug on the coupons) but did NOT work on Mothers’ Day. It is too bad that El Pollo Loco isn’t in Hawaii, but the mainland Tsaikos could benefit from this:

Welcome to the Warrior Ohana Mr. Enos. Work hard, study hard and enjoy your time at UH.

  43. d1島 May 8, 2009 6:08 am

    Great Morning All!

Welcome to the Warriors, Scott Enos!
    Nice pickup by Coach Tormey.

Took #2 son to Chris Sailer Nat’l Event last Jan. It’s a “real deal” event; I’m sure the competition was equally rigorous at the Spring Event.
The numbers are larger for HS kickers but still a pretty good sized field in the JC category.

    http://www.chrissailerkicking.com/index.php?act=GetClip&aid=82

Looks like Enos actually had the 3rd best average for kick-off yardage (67.2) but dropped a little due to average hangtime (3.48).

  44. Kekoa May 8, 2009 6:15 am

    Good morning all!…Good morning Garrett.

My son-in-law, Gallo Fonoti, used to manage the first El Pollo Loco in Sacramento back in 1989. I really enjoyed eating their chicken because you got it hot off the grill. The secret was in the marinade, and the fact that it was prepared the day before. Needless to say…we always had that Loco chicken whenever we were ono for it!

Didn’t they have an outlet here back around the late 80’s? I seem to recall one where the KFC is now near Pearl Ridge. Koakane, that’s just down the hill from you right?…shoots, I fogit…dey no habu, beru!

  45. d1島 May 8, 2009 6:21 am

    Kekoa,

    Great Morning, Brah!
I used to like that El Pollo Loco down by the exit of Kam Drive-In; the chicken was ono.

  54. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 6:47 am

    OK, OK. I’m awake now.
Yep, the plan (again) is for LaCount to join the Warriors this summer.
If he makes it, though, he’ll join as a walk-on.
I’ve lost track of how many years he has remaining. I guess I’ll give him a call today.

  55. MeiLing May 8, 2009 6:55 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Happy birthday, Mrs. Long Time UH Fan!

  56. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 6:56 am

    Re: Trifecta.
Nash should be exempt from Donovan’s decision-making because HF changed the policy.
For almost every other coach, HF gave set-length contracts: three years or five years. For some reason, HF changed that with men’s basketball (not women’s basketball, which is why we’re in the current mess).
HF gave Nash a rollover contract, which meant that every year he is evaluated. The end of Nash’s first year coincided with the start of Donovan’s first year, so Nash didn’t get a rollover. So after this season, Nash’s contract had run down two years.
Nash deserved to receive an initial five-year contract. By rolling him over, with a fifth year as an option, he’s getting it. That’s only fair, particularly since he’s making squat compared to other D-I coaches.

  57. Kekoa May 8, 2009 6:57 am

Scott Enos ~ He sounds like another offensive scoring weapon for the good guys!

Welcome to the Warrior World *Scooter!*

She was speaking on behalf of the hotel workers, who would be greatly affected if a severe hotel room tax were imposed.

  62. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 7:16 am

Two more coaches are on deck: the wives of Stutzmann and Aranda are due in the next couple of weeks.

I guess the swine flu news has shaken the bacon folks.

  64. djmitcho May 8, 2009 7:19 am

Hmmm….seems to me these are “football season” babies that the coaches wives are having. When did they have the time?

  65. Kekoa May 8, 2009 7:20 am

I heard traffic on King Street was unreal yestahday. Cars double parked near Ritchies Drive-in caused a 5 mile back up from 11:30 until well aftah 2 PM.

Witnesses say that a very short Filipino male may have been the reason for the traffic snarl. They say he is a known Tsaiko, and to exercise extreme caution when approaching him.

  69. Buffoman May 8, 2009 7:31 am

Don’t know if you folks listened to the Bball game on the radio yesterday. It was difficult to listen to. Poor Don, I think he was trying to not start to giggle out of frustration, particularly when describing the FS homeruns.

It was amazing, actually sounded like Don was call batting practice at some points in the game. Even I had to laugh out of sheer frustration. The alternatives would have been to leave the radio on and go crazy or simply turn it off.

Yeah Ralph #23, I made a statement yesterday with sort of the same thought. We hype these 7′ guys we appear to land (outside of Idaho, U of Montana, South Dakota or North Dakota) but I’ve yet to see one tear up. May sound funny but I think the last good big guy we had besides Tommy Barker was Melton Werts, and that was when we still played in the “HIC” (now called the Blaisdell).

  70. YpoWarrior May 8, 2009 7:31 am

On nfl.com, it says that Pisa Tinoisamoa was released by the Rams today.

I saw the byootiful and talented Mrs. Bulla on the KITV news at 5, and immediately called Herr Buller to give him the heads up. He watched and saw her on the 6 o’clock edition… Mrs. Bulla is a terrific manager at her hotel and has a tremendous passion for her job, her guests and her employees. The occupancy rate at her hotel is far above the average for Waikiki these days. Two family members stayed at her hotel on separate occasions and the service was truly excellent. šŸ™‚

  79. jm2375 May 8, 2009 7:55 am

  80. madeinhawaii May 8, 2009 8:08 am

    Aloha and good morning everyone…

Interesting last minute recruit… I guess Enos will kick the field goals and point afters and Symonds will be used on kickoffs. That’ll give Symonds a couple of years to really get his leg behind the ball, get used to the pressure situations, and bring home the LEGacy of great kickers from UH.

  81. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 8, 2009 8:10 am

dpk 50 % not so bad since KS had two team in the tourny.

  83. madeinhawaii May 8, 2009 8:14 am

I always felt that Nash was handicapped with only a three-year contract so late in the recruiting period. That didn’t give him enough time to build from scratch and forced his hand into the JC pool more often than not. The performance requirements with two years remaining again demand immediate results from his recruiting efforts. So, he needs players that have already demonstrated some success at a level higher than any highschool competition. All of which again points to JC recruiting.

Good luck to Nash! I really want to see him do good.

  84. Da Punchbowl Kid May 8, 2009 8:15 am

It’s hard to imagine that Pisa wouldn’t be picked up by somebody… pretty quickly even.

  94. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 8:58 am

Well, if Pisa’s free tomorrow, there is a matter of karaoke . . .

  95. Jason May 8, 2009 9:00 am

Looks like the Rams will save $2.257 million by cutting Pisa. Plus, Spagnuolo has been revamping the roster big time.

Welcome Scott! And happy birthday Mrs. LTUH!

dean wilson is 1 over thru 10 holes and t126 currently at 6 over total
michelle wie is 1 under thru 11 holes and t28 currently at 2 under total

  97. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 9:04 am

OK, I’m at home watching “Saved by the Bell.” In my defense, it is the summer episode with Leah Remini. But yet … I think I need to get out of the house.

  98. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 9:05 am

Well, by my calculations, UH will have three kickers and two punters in camp. Not sure what they’ll do with the second long snapper.

some more scott enos 2008 highlights, not sure if posted
already. looks like most kickoffs near back of endzone, some
though were returnable and low flighted, or it appeared to be
    to me.

  101. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 9:12 am

One of the Web sites said Enos’ kickoffs had a 4.0 hangtime in high school. That’s good, right?

  102. Garret May 8, 2009 9:12 am

    ST,

That is a lot of kicks and punters to have in camp! Especially when considering the limited number of camp spots and the tough cuts that have to be made to Warriors who cannot be in camp but will be invited back when school starts, the extra kickers mean that roster spots will be that much more difficult to get.

I thought that the plan over the past year was to try to get a walk-on punter and kicker because of the limited number of scholarships available. However, it seems that Alex and Scott are extremely worthy of scholarships and are good additions to the Warriors, so I’m happy.

  103. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 9:13 am

And I’m sure Luke Ingram will be on scholarship at mid-year.

  104. BG May 8, 2009 9:16 am

Pisa might just end up on the 49’ers since his home is in Cali and his mom is there too. He’d be joining up with Ulbrich and Sopoaga too. Don’t know what SF’s situation is with LB’s…Jason? A-House? watcha tink?

  105. Garret May 8, 2009 9:17 am

The NCAA football game from Electronic Arts will be very different if Keller’s lawsuit succeeds.

If the lawsuit succeeds, the NCAA will not pay players. EA Sports will randomize the rosters, or revert to the ā€œTony Mickeltonā€ days of the early 1990s.

Sam Keller and his attorney would swoon in a fleeting bubble of their own self-satisfaction. Thousands of college football fans would have a distinctly less entertaining game. College football and basketball players would be denied one of the coolest perks of their position, playing as themselves in a video game.

Latest rumor out of Bullaville is that the 1st Wing of the Jager Bomber squadron will be landing at tomorrow’s Karaoke Call after an earlier sortie elsewhere.

If true, along with Hawaiianbod, this means that Rob25’s Karaoke Bash for Frank25 is near sell out/maximum capacity–maybe 2 spots remaining…

4 seconds is very good hang time, though i saw a few kickoffs with hangtime of only 3 seconds, at 2:45 mark of video. of course this could be the video perhaps? dont know. i dont question his leg strength, just the flight of the ball but this video was compiled in 2008 of last year. i guess my eyes are playing tricks on me. šŸ˜Ž

  113. Kazz May 8, 2009 9:46 am

Today is here Wahine, well one of many possible “its” should there be a tomorrow after today.

Nevada has had our number many times. This season we had them in one game and we could of just as easily had them in another game, but that slipped away. Miscommunication. Nevada is good and you all know that better than any spectator. All it takes is one though. Just one win which looms as large as one last loss.

You all enjoy your time with each other on the softball field and there is no one that has the right to say that you do not deserve to continue on.

March on and fight for today because every day you compete in this tournament is a gift and not a given right.

A lot of you have tasted a WAC championship before and you are still here today and there are reasons for this. Today you have the opportunity to further justify those reasons.

    Kekoa….

Quite possibly, the day before the camp starts they’ll rename it.. “One on ONE with Coach Tormey”

Hey? Howcome nobody says anything about the error in the camp link Koa Kid Football Camp above?

  115. Jason May 8, 2009 9:46 am

BG: While I’d love to have him in SF, I don’t think it’ll happen. I think the coaching staff wants to see if Manny Lawson can really step into the starting role and become the star we all think he can be. Then again, we have very little quality OLB depth, so I wouldn’t mind seeing them sign Pisa to a one-year contract, at the very least. It could start a competition, see if Manny’s light turns on when some heat is applied to his backside.

  116. layson May 8, 2009 9:49 am

  128. sjmacro May 8, 2009 10:52 am

ST: I can see the blog again. Looks like it was a brief cable outage in our neighborhood– whew šŸ™‚

  129. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 10:52 am

MACK SAYS ALEXANDER IS THE STARTING QB.

OK, why did I write that in CAPS?
It’s because ESPN.com messed up and said it’s Rausch.
    It’s not.
    Mack says it’s Alexander.
OK, back to Saved by the Bell …

  130. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 10:58 am

mih….it would make more sense for a team to have one kicker handle all of the duties and one punter. ideally, like last year, if the punter could be the holder, you save two travel roster spots not having two kickers and one specific holder.

so on the road, usually there is just one kicker.

it will be interesting because the word is that the kevin bell hs walk on is pretty darn good too. competition is good.

  131. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 10:58 am

Now I have to figure out who broke my blog.
Seems like every time we’re on a roll with page views, there’s a mysterious “maintenance” program implemented.

  132. madeinhawaii May 8, 2009 10:59 am

    ST…

awww should have let the controversy rage for a week or so… now what are we gonna dis & cuss?

Bell is a very good kicker.
    As they say: “Game on.”

  135. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 11:01 am

    …an after thought

does offering scott enos at this late juncture tell an understory?

    two things,
one, does this mean the last scholie will not be awarded to a current non-scholie player?

two, does this mean (worse case scenario) that one of the early commits will not make it through?

three, or does this mean that enos was too good to pass up?

i am sure that st knows for sure.

  136. madeinhawaii May 8, 2009 11:02 am

Oh yeah… Alex admitting he “dropped the ball” and then this.. LOL… you could really make a case out of that..

  137. chawan_cut May 8, 2009 11:03 am

    colomaohana,
sorry! i had to sit next to my friend the groom (tombo ahi) and his fiance. they just arrived that day and wanted to make it to the game.

  138. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 11:04 am

i agree that bell is a very good kicker. looking at stats and film of this kid, i am wondering???????? hmmmmm.

i wonder if icecube is having melting moments about now?

but, yeah. competition is good for the program and individual. after all complacency breeds mediocrity.

like you so perfectly said, “Game on”

  139. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 11:07 am

  145. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 11:15 am

    what a difference a year makes….

an ex-hc is recruiting specifically for special team players.

an ex-oline coach of the midwest is in minnesota recruiting olinemen for hawaii.

now i see why and how important it is to have tormey and shaw aboard. not only improving db’s, special teams, and oline play but increasing our span on the recruiting front like never before.

the wisdom of mack is surfacing each day.
what took folks so long to hire him as a head coach?
seems like he has had his vision-of-what-he-would-do-if-he-ever-became-a-head-coach dancing in his head for years just waiting for the chance.

don’t we all do that since we were kids?
    “dream on little broomstick cowboy….”

    is september around the corner?

    …nuff said

  146. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 11:18 am

    was it called Polynesian Power?

  165. Hawaiianbod May 8, 2009 11:56 am

good kuck to pisa! one of the ultimate ultimate warriors. as a proven commodity in the No Fun League he should have NO problem latching-on with a team.

  166. mauiwarrior May 8, 2009 11:57 am

    Jason:

if the niners were to pick up pisa i don’t think it would be at OLB, in there 3-4 scheme pisa would fit nicely in the middle rotating with takeo spikes or just to provide depth. The outside linebacker in their scheme seems to be hybrid de/olb type of guys while pisa is prototypical olb in a 4-3 scheme, i think he would be good in a cover 2, maybe he’ll replace derrick brooks in tampa or provide assistance in detroit(they need all the help they can get)…………i don’t think he’ll be with the niners, btw niners for life cheeeeeeeee

  174. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:07 pm

  175. letsgowarriors May 8, 2009 12:09 pm

al, probably not 1 right? i was under the assumption that a walkon would get a 85 scholie and not a 25 scholie. i think as long as they been enrolled in school for 2 years, they can get a 85 scholie. enos is getting our last 25 scholie…?

  179. Pauoa Boy May 8, 2009 12:12 pm

Pisa Tinoisamoa had choke injuries the past couple years and hasn’t played a full season healthy since his rookie year. He was still beastin with the injured shoulder, arm, etc…but I think the Rams are trying to revamp and cannot wait on Pisa to be at full strength. I hope his injuries are behind him cause he was one of the most productive and underrated linebackers in the NFL when healthy. He will land somewhere as will Travis Laboy pretty soon once teams weed out guys through mini-camp. These two guys are proven and still have many years ahead of them, just gotta stay healthy…IMO

  180. Loa May 8, 2009 12:13 pm

Enos does count as a 25.
I’ve lost track of who’s grayshirting, although I hear the coaches, if they could, would grayshirt 10 players a year.
They like the idea of a guy essentially having six years to play four.

So what’s the story on a female Big Island basketball player who committed to a Pac-10 school now deciding to go to UH or Oregon?

  197. letsgowarriors May 8, 2009 12:24 pm

tsai, tell them HPU is the route to go! its 1 year and no guarantee UH will offer them again out of JC.

question, when was the last time that a hawaii commit that didnt qualify make it back to UH after completing his AA?

  198. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 12:25 pm

ahouse….kevin konrath is at portland state after transferring from harper jc. he left uh after a year of redshirting.

    http://www.goviks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=19300&ATCLID=3735372

  199. Pauoa Boy May 8, 2009 12:25 pm

Oh yeah UCLA, the frikkin poachaz…
I like UCLA but dayumit Norm Chow is a rat…

  200. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:26 pm

Some of the players told me they were disappointed that Konrath was essentially cut loose. They liked him.

  201. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:27 pm

Actually, I think most are using West Oahu.
UH system, so credits transfer easily.

  202. letsgowarriors May 8, 2009 12:28 pm

so i was under the impression we had 1 25 and 1 85 scholie left. was it actually we had only 1 scholie left and the coaches were debating whether to give it to a current player or a newcomer?

    im probably just confusing everyone.

  203. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:28 pm

    If anybody’s keeping track:
Search committee for women’s basketball has met twice.
Search committee for men’s volleyball met for the first time yesterday.

  204. letsgowarriors May 8, 2009 12:29 pm

good point, im sure UH WO is cheaper than HPU too. i didnt realize Manoa and West Oahu had different entrance requirements.

  205. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:30 pm

I think there will be a couple of scholarships available come training camp.

  206. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:32 pm

    letgowarriors:
    it’s complicated.

  207. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 12:33 pm

ahouse….every year hundreds of kids near and abroad send in their recruiting tapes to manoa. there are so many variables involved in finally landing a recruit.

grades, potential, money (scholie or not), parents, girlfriends, etc, etc.

the first two must have to happen to be considered. does he have the grades and academic aptitude to be student at manoa? does he have the d1 ability, size, potential, et al? can’t get past the first two then nothing transpires.

as far as the aussie, to me, poor background check by the coaching staff during jj’s time. to bring a foreign recruit takes a lot of discovery and double checking. somebody didn’t do this. i think he is at a jc now.
but the rewards can be magnificent.

  208. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:35 pm

UH always admits a certain number of partial-qualifiers ā€” in all programs. If you go to West Oahu, your NCAA clock doesn’t start. If you go to UH, not only does your NCAA clock start, but you’re ineligible to play, anyway.

  209. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 12:36 pm

a few graduations like eliminian and the like would release some of the 85 limit wouldn’t it?

  210. Bulla May 8, 2009 12:37 pm

ST, yest the LG is a lot more calm, but then again, I haven’t seen the Gov miss a layup yet, haha

The VETO stamp was cool. Rick Hamada’s kids got her lei and the pen the Gov used to sign the Vetoes, I just wanted the stamp to go veto the offices of the senators and reps…..power of the media, i tell you, Hamada was smooth, and Rick is not a small guy. Using his 2 kids was a great idea.

maybe i should have took ‘The Beast’, carried him on my shoulder like Rick did with his kids….ok, that would not work.

Anyway, a great day in the political life of our state.

    Quote of the day,

‘if the senate was in charge of the desert, they’d run out of sand’.

  211. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:38 pm

Not sure if anyone saw it ā€” because we couldn’t go live and the replay is so choppy ā€” but Tuioti said that every prospect in the state is evaluated. I know a lot of people think that UH is missing out on this person or that person, but they do pore through videos and evaluations.

  212. Garret May 8, 2009 12:38 pm

Report from Raiders’ minicamp indicates that Samson is still recovering from his knee surgery. Maybe Samson’s injury and Grove’s current good health was a factor in Miami picking Grove over Samson? Miami is really focused on their offseason weight training program and minicamps, and Samson isn’t healthy enough to participate in minicamps yet.

New center Samson Satele is still recovering from minor knee surgery he had before joining the Raiders.

  213. letsgowarriors May 8, 2009 12:38 pm

i was under the impression that regardless of a school having a football program or not, your eligibility clock starts as soon as you enroll in an institution full-time. and then on top of that, as a partial, you dont get your 4th year back unless you make good progress on your degree.

that’s what’s got me so confused about the blaze situation.

  214. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 12:39 pm

everytime i review the gdl tapes….i see another solly e. linebacker of the future. he also is of great character and an excellent student.

  215. Garret May 8, 2009 12:40 pm

This ceremony should be a nice tribute Frank Gansz.

A Celebration of the Life of former SMU assistant coach Frank Gansz has been scheduled for 11 a.m., June 5th at Alumni Hall on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Gansz, who coached in both the college and pro ranks, passed away April 27th at the age of 70.

Is West Oahu not part of UH? i am confused…

  217. Jason May 8, 2009 12:42 pm

I’m told Marcus Malepeai wants to grayshirt. That would be a great thing for him.

mauiwarrior: Geez, you read my mind concerning all the things I didn’t say. I was actually thinking the exact same thing you said, but I don’t think he’d challenge in the inside with Willis and Spikes. Plus, there’s a little bit more depth on the inside with Ulbrich and others. Very little depth outside; I know Pisa’s not the typical hybrid 3-4 OLB, but he could transition. I guess what I’m trying to say is if they’re going to invest money on a veteran, it’ll be someone for the outside. Hmm, Travis LaBoy, anyone? šŸ™‚

(Hey, I wouldn’t mind they sign Travis for the outside and Pisa for the inside. Hmm, Vantz Singletary is on the staff now …)

But yeah, I’m with you, he’s best as a 4-3 weakside linebacker. I could see him in a cover 2 system as well.

  218. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 8, 2009 12:42 pm

Is it too early to say CONGRATS to Mr. and Mrs. Tombo Ahi ??

  219. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:42 pm

    Al:
No, graduations only help at mid-year. Scholarships are one-year deals, so Elimimian’s scholarship comes off the books at the end of this month, no matter if he graduates or not.
Nine players graduated in December, which is how UH was able to offer scholies to three grayshirts and five JC transfers. Funaki was one of the graduates, so his scholie wasn’t thrown back into the pool.

  220. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 12:42 pm

211…yah i caught that. let that put to rest to any folks crying ‘wolf’.

  221. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:45 pm

West Oahu is part of the UH system, just like UH Hilo is part of the UH system. But because it doesn’t offer football, the clock doesn’t trigger, as I understand it.

  222. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2009 12:46 pm

Hey, UCLA can do the same thing. All it needs is for a student to find a non-football-playing UC school.

  223. A-House May 8, 2009 12:46 pm

    ST:

use your influence to encourage parents of Big Island girl to make it UH!

notice, I use generalities cause I porgot names – that’s really sad!

  224. letsgowarriors May 8, 2009 12:46 pm

so what stops a non-qualifier from going to KCC for 2 years earning his AA, then having 5 to play 4 besides the fact that they might not be discipline enough to stay in shape?

  225. d1島 May 8, 2009 12:49 pm

I saw Leila Wai after the Roosevelt/Waianae boys volleyball match last night interviewing players, I hope she will be there again for Saturday’s match and that she asks Roosevelt’s Kenneth Rewick if he is going to UH next year. That kid has tons of potential at 6′ 7 and still growing and reminds me alot of Clay Stanley at his age.

Stephen is the girl’s basketball player thats no longer going to a Pac 10 school Vicky Taglicod? She would be a huge pickup for UH.

Wow, just got this in an e-mail:

A student living in a UH MĆ¢noa residence hall has tested positive for H1N1 flu (swine flu). The student reported to the University Health Services MĆ¢noa on Wednesday with flu-like symptoms and the test was today confirmed by the Hawai’i State Department of Health. The student is recovering from what appears to be a mild illness.

Other students and staff members who have been in close contact with the student are being notified and will be evaluated. The affected areas of the Hale Wainani residence hall are being disinfected. The student and two roommates, who are displaying symptoms of the illness, are being isolated in separate rooms.

Anyone who shows signs of flu-like illness contact the University Health Services at 956-8965. Symptoms of H1N1 virus include: sudden fever, coughing, sore threat, body aches and pains/fatigue.

Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw said, “As everyone is aware, influenza is a current concern in Hawaii so all of us should follow good infection control practices, including avoiding others if you are sick with flu symptoms. That will help reduce the spread of the virus.”

Health officials continue to stress the importance of following the recommended public health guidelines – cover your cough or sneeze, wash your hands often and do not come to work or school if you are sick.

There are currently no changes to university operations or activities and the campus is operating normally.

crap, a triple then single tied the score at 2

  277. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 3:03 pm

actually the squeeze play is rare in softball because the runner can not take a lead until the pitched ball crosses the home plate. it therefore, is rarely used at the higher levels, little league yah.

perhaps a bunt and run would be more in order only if the infield is playing a bit back. otherwise it would be more suicidal than a squeeze. they would have more of a chance with a slap hit or fly ball.

  278. al ā„¢ May 8, 2009 3:04 pm

Rainbow Wahine Softball finish 4th in the WAC

Hard lessons to learn for the underclassmen and a hard “aloha” for the eight veterans on this team.

While hard to accept as a fan, it doesn’t come out of the blue. This year’s Wahine softball team had it’s shares of problems on the field as much as the positives. Coach Coolen and his staff did a remarkable job in keeping this team from bottoming-out in the beginning and continued to perform well on the road winning all but one of their conference series. That one team today proved why they were the ONLY WAC team to win their series against us.

For us, a season of struggles, success, and a bittersweet ending comes to a close.

Eight will move on with their lives and the rest return to have another go at it next season.

Personally speaking, I want to thank all the Wahine softballers for all their efforts and sacrifice. Emotions must be running high up there in Fresno right now.

    Again,

I extend my “mahalo” to the young ladies that performed admirably, especially in this last contest. No one can take away your effort, heart, and soul.

The fans will look forward again to another spring of Wahine Softball in 2010 filled with familiar faces and new faces ready to accept the right to wear “HAWAII” on their jerseys.

Sheesh. I think I might have been pre-mature in my earlier post, but Coach Coolen seemed to be very adimant that the Wahine will not be able to secure an at large bid into the NCAA tournament. Coolen noted the RPI this year (90-ish) compared to previous years, BUTā€¦.

Got plenty of song slips–the trick is to start using them immediately…otherwise there could be theoretically too many song slips for the midnight end time. d1shima and Lyn–who are usually the designated song starters at large karaoke calls, will both be late–so their 6 additionalstarter/group songs will go elsewhere–probably to LizKauai and other lead Tsingers who are there early.

Rob25 has a cache of song slips to give out for special requests. šŸ™‚ Remember, she has a list of songs…so there will be duets and special songs by their request. I’m sure Jason will be able to serenade his ladies…

The former Hawaii bigs who stood out already knew how to play.

Even though former Hawaii big men got (what 17 to 32 something rebounds in a game, dominated the inside in some games, 29 plus rebounds a game, I ain’t kidding). Hawaii coaches don’t know how to teach big guys to handle a basketball! Look into UH Hawaii basketball historical.

    brew808,

No news so far about Pisa in our newspaper. He hasn’t lived in San Diego for a long time–college in Hawaii, NFL in St. Louis, so he doesn’t have much of a following in San Diego.

I’m not worried about Pisa getting a team to play for–he’s been very productive when healthy. Unfortunately, I am worried about Ulbrich–he’s already gone from the LB rotation to mainly special teams contributor, and each year that goes by brings more competition and a team that looks for a younger replacement.

  407. Garret May 8, 2009 8:21 pm

This Boston Globe article seems to think that the Patriots will immediately try to get Pisa to be their starter at inside LB.

Earlier today, some veteran inside linebacker options on the free-agent market were listed here.

Now, with the Rams releasing Pisa Tinoisamoa today, he would shoot to the top of the list.

While Tinoisamoa is not a Ted Johnson-like run-stuffer who will play downhill and shed blocks, and might be a bit undersized for what the Patriots generally look for (6-1, 240) in their 3-4 defense, he is athletic and has been productive.

So if the Patriots were serious about adding a veteran at that spot after losing rookie Tyrone McKenzie to a season-ending knee injury, it would make sense that Tinoisamoa would be on their radar. He reminds me of a bit of Lions linebacker Ernie Sims, a player I believe the Patriots liked coming out of the draft a few years ago.

I checked an old article I wrote at my previous job, with the MetroWest Daily News and Milford Daily News, and the Patriots did have Tinoisamoa in for a pre-draft visit in 2003

  408. Garret May 8, 2009 8:22 pm

The crazy thing is that Pisa led the Rams in tackles last season!

The St. Louis Rams have released linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, the team’s leading tackler in 2008.

“This was a difficult decision based on a lot of factors,” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said Friday in a news release. “I have a great deal of respect for Pisa and wish him all of the best.”

Tinoisamoa, a six-year veteran drafted by the Rams in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft, recorded 135 tackles in 2008, 88 of which were solo.

  409. brew808 May 8, 2009 8:22 pm

We had a meeting today that included a discussion about intellectual property. (I thought about you G.) I kept asking questions and everyone kept giving me the evil eye that said “shut up already”…. Oh…. I think I’m getting the same treatment here…. šŸ™„ shock: šŸ™„

  411. Garret May 8, 2009 8:24 pm

Article about how the new coach wants bigger LBs in his system.

Coach Spagnuolo wants bigger backers and corners.

Tinoisamoa was more of a fit for a ā€œCover 2ā€³ scheme, where speed was more important than brawn.

Tinoisamoa was a productive player for what he did. When healthy he was high up the charts on tackles made. And heā€™s a fierce competitor. Certainly he could have played a role, even as a backup, on the 2009 Rams. The Rams will save $2 million or so in cap money, but this wasnā€™t really a financial-based move. And the depth at LB isnā€™t strong.

  413. brew808 May 8, 2009 8:27 pm

Lambs drafted James Laurinaitis, 6-2, 245 from Buckeyes with early 2nd (#35 overall). That’s a big investment – so I guess they had to make room. He’s not that much bigger than Pisa – but youth over experience…. I guess. šŸ˜ˆ

  414. Garret May 8, 2009 8:28 pm

    brew808,

I sat through a 4-hour discussion on Intellectual Property last year, and I thought that the subject was covered into overkill! However, my customer required me to attend the meeting, so I just sat there. The 4 hours probably would have been more enjoyable if someone like you was asking questions instead of having the speaker talk for 4 hours in a monotone voice.

  415. brew808 May 8, 2009 8:30 pm

Yeah Ralph…. Al can go ahead and crush whatever chances that Pisa & Laboy have playing for the Black and Ravaged! šŸ˜ˆ

  416. Garret May 8, 2009 8:31 pm

    Regarding brew808’s #415:

Chris Draft will start on the strong side, Witherspoon will start on the weak side, and rookie James Laurinaitis is set to be thrown into the middle as an immediate starter.

Itā€™s OK to cut Pisa ā€” as long as you can replace him with a better LB. Iā€™m not sure that the Rams can immediately do that. If a starter gets hurt, thereā€™s not much behind them. People who are pleased with this move seem to be throwing away their concern for depth.

Weā€™ll see if Devaney has a corresponding move to go with this one. I donā€™t think he has anything lined up. As Devaney said Friday afternoon on St. Louis all-sports station 101 ESPN, itā€™s a matter of the GM and the coach wanting to find out more about their young LBs by giving them more of an opportunity.

  417. brew808 May 8, 2009 8:34 pm

    Hey Ralph,

Why do you care who Hawaii recruits for their girly, girl basketball team? Did you ever watch those games on TV? The center and arenas were empty!

Maybe it’s because Ralph cares about Wahine athletics as much as the men?

Maybe it’s because Ralph doesn’t have gender equality issues?

I’m not Ralph but what say you? Huh? Since you think Wahine Basketball is “girly girly” why should you even give a damn what a UH fan thinks?

  419. Ralph May 8, 2009 8:38 pm

another good reason the Rams are losers! Robert K can let his emotions out at the Karaoke tomorrow, go for it big guy cuz the seasons already over for the Rams. they can join the futile 49’ers, once proud teams back in the 40’s to 60’s. Altho Walsh did resurrect the niners with montana. I guess it helps to have a good qb

  421. Jason May 8, 2009 8:40 pm

I’ll be honest — I have been pleasantly surprised that Ulbrich has lasted as long as he has. At his age and salary, I thought he was a goner a couple years ago. But the younger guys the 49ers have brought in haven’t panned out, so they’ve kept Ulbrich on. And I wouldn’t say that’s anything against him, cause he’s a good player. But he’s not in his prime anymore, and a veteran salary ($2.63 million in 2009) is big compared to a start-up salary. This is the last year of his contract, though, so I can see them keeping him this one year and possibly letting him go as a FA in 2010. A lot depends on how the new guy they drafted, Scott McKillop, develops.

  422. Garret May 8, 2009 8:40 pm

    brew808,

I’m very conservative about IP, so I’d say that the customer owns the IP. However, lots of companies would just go ahead with the better “mouse trap”…and then if that makes a ton of money there would definitely be a lawsuit from the customer. I guess it comes down to how big the changes are to the idea/proposal…and who has the better lawyers.

VC never sign NDAs, so they would just pass the idea as a “suggestion from nowhere” to one of their portfolio companies.

  423. brew808 May 8, 2009 8:41 pm

Thanks Ralph!!! Oh wait – I didn’t mean to SHOUT in the morgue that is the Raider Nation!!! šŸ˜ˆ

  424. Garret May 8, 2009 8:42 pm

    Jason,

The contract might have actually helped Ulbrich with the 49ers, as cutting him with years left on his contract would have given a cap hit by accelerating the cap hit from his signing bonus. However, there is no cap hit for cutting a player in his last year of his contract…which is Ulbrich’s situation now.

Ulbrich has done well for himself, though those injuries did hold him back some.

Pisa’s been hurt, LaBoy’s been injury-prone…we sure get a lot of wounded Warriors, unfortunately. Pisa will find another team I’m sure, hopefully LaBoy will find a new team as well.

Obviously football is a hard game to play injury-free for extended periods of time. We don’t have truckloads of NFL draftees like the big schools do every year, so maybe that why the injuries seem so frequent.

  482. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:47 am

“Those who follow the ā€˜Skins will tell you that Jason Campbell (barring any trades) will likely be the starting quarterback this year and veterans Todd Collins will be the top backup. So the real competition at quarterback will be for which young player can make the roster as the third quarterback.”

  483. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:48 am

“Colt Brennan came out of Hawaii in 2008 as a Heisman finalist and having led the team to an undefeated regular season. He was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft and played impressively in the preseason and became something of a fan favorite. He would seem to be the favorite to make the Redskins roster given his experience and stature (heā€™s 6ā€™3ā€).”

  484. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:48 am

“Chase Daniel led Missouri to two straight Big 12 North titles, but regressed a bit as a senior after finishing as a Heisman finalist in 2007 along with Brennan. At just 6ā€™ tall and after throwing 18 interceptions as a senior he went undrafted. He also got into a bit of hot water for a twitter he sent late in the draft. He said he was hearing he might go to the Redskins but might be better off going undrafted. A popular DC area radio personality took him to task for the remarks and Daniel retorted which only drew further attention to the message. While the PR snafu is hardly insurmountable, it hasnā€™t endeared him to the public.”

  485. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:48 am

“Ganz has been the most under the radar player. Not as nationally known as Daniel, Ganz finished only slightly behind Daniel in pass efficiency and led Nebraska to nine wins and a Gator Bowl victory. Listed at 6ā€™1ā€ he might even be taller than Daniel. Daniel seemed to decline over the last four games of the season and threw eight interceptions. Ganz got better throwing just three. If Brennan doesnā€™t live up to his role as favorite, Ganz could very well beat out Daniel. His experience in a West Coast offense can’t hurt.”

  486. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:49 am

“And the longer term prospects for the Redskins third quarterback arenā€™t all that bad. Campbell seems likely to depart after the 2009 season and Collins is too old to be anything more than a stopgap starter. If he practices well enough, the third quarterback could very well find himself the starter in 2010. Stranger things have happened.”

  487. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:50 am

The “System QB” Tag Claims Latest Victim in Graham Harrell

  488. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:51 am

“In the NFL, the term ā€œSystem Quarterbackā€ is a dirty word. Andre Ware, Gino Torretta and more recently Colt Brennan were all fairly labeled as such.

For the most part the term has proved to be just as accurate for scouts as it is a death sentence to the quarterbacks. Signal-callers in college who have a spread out offense and are not asked to read complicated defenses as well as physical differences seem to be the key attributes of these quarterbacks.”

  489. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:51 am

“The latest to be termed this is Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell. The former Red Raider is second all-time in NCAA career passing yards and owns the record for career passing touchdowns.

However, the NFL Draft came and went without Harrell hearing his name called and as of now he has not signed with any teams as a free agent (although he will participate in Browns rookie camp).”

  490. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:52 am

“So, does this mean itā€™s time for Harrell to put his education degree to work? Most likely, but thereā€™s always a little hope. Harrell was extremely productive which canā€™t be overlooked no matter the system.”

  491. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:52 am

“On the flip side, heā€™s on the short side and has an almost sidearm, shoot-from-the-hip throwing style that most coaches will look to correct.

While the Brownsā€™ run-first, controlled passing game may not seem to fit Harrell. A similar west coast approach may actually work for Harrell.”

  492. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:53 am

“Remember, the system was designed to hide the flaws of undersized and weak-armed quarterbacks. Itā€™s also dependent upon putting the ball into certain spots.

Harrell is by no means starting quarterback material, however certain teams could use him as a backup.”

“The Rams, Chiefs and Texans have offenses that could hide some of Harrellā€™s flaws. Given that they have decent running games to take the load off and receivers that can do most of the work, these teams could be a good fit for Harrell.

There are a couple of wild card teams that could also be a home for Harrell. The Cardinals of course have Kurt Warner and Matt Leinart, but Warner will retire soon and Leinart (the still-presumed heir apparent) will need a back up.”

  496. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 9, 2009 12:54 am

“One last wild card could be the 49ers. Harrell could be reunited with former teammate Michael Crabtree and would benefit from Frank Gore and Vernon Davis. Plus, San Franā€™s quarterback situation is far from settled.

System quarterbacks are everywhere in college football with more players in systems that spread the field to their advantage. With that said, the NFL may have to adjust its standards for an ideal quarterback.”

  497. Ralph May 9, 2009 12:54 am

Al – As a representative for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) we would like to commend you for staying home and not attending tonight’s Karaoke Call. Although we love you and we’ll miss you, we would like for you to keep your ‘germs’ to yourself abd not Spread the Aloha – as they say in the 50th State.

Jason – as for you, please, please go to the nearest drug store and buy the biggest prophylactic and put it over your head. The one on your shoulders, silly. This measure (no pun intended) will prevent any transmission of the H1N1 Virus.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    MadeinHawaii re: #234

athletes dont sign NLI’s this time of year, they sign scholarship agreements. when a student signs an NLI though, they also sign a scholarship agreements. Some call it a Financial aid agreement – depends on the school. It gives the details of what their financial aid will be, has 3 boxes that can be checked: [ ] Fall Semester [ ] Spring Semester [ ] Both. When a student is greyshirting it will be checked spring, for example. at NLI day most of the kids had “both” checked. This is just as binding as an NLI as long as the student is admitted and remains in good academic standing

  515. Hey- wha-happened?
Thanks ST or Techs for giving me #500!
