UH seeks clear forecast

The Warriors received good news this morning when cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips received full clearance from the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Phillips and Tony Grimes were battling at one of the cornerback’s spots through training camp. Grimes will start against USC, but Phillips will play a lot and will be used as the nickel corner.

The Warriors hope to receive additional good news today in the situation involving defensive lineman Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson. It has been weeks since he submitted a petition for an exemption that will allow him to play this season. Pu‘u-Robinson relinquished a scholarship and likely starting job at Washington State to move back to Hawaii for family reasons. Head coach Norm Chow will hold a spot on the travel roster for Pu‘u-Robinson until Thursday, when the Warriors leave for L.A. If not, Ikaika Cavaco-Amoy will be placed on the 64-player travel roster.

    Hey d1 – HRU?

Did I do that right? Main ting I’m not repeating myself or repeating the error from yesterblog. Right?

  8. Stephen Tsai August 28, 2012 6:32 am

    d1:

Team practices early Thursday for 2 hours, eats, then goes to the airport.

That will be the schedule no matter if it plays on a Friday or Saturday: Last full practice will be two days before the game, walk-through in L.A. the day before the game, then charter to non-SoCal site.

Haucks teleconference was less than two minutes with no one calling in to ask questions. Methinks Rebel fans have given up hope or just don’t care. Pretty sad.

  19. papajoe2 August 28, 2012 7:13 am

I breifly watched an ESPN college football show yesterday. They said USC has 2 of the best receivers in the nation and both should be 1st round picks. Yikes! Too bad for them that it won’t be enough.

  20. HawaiiMongoose August 28, 2012 7:18 am

Jeezy, I had the same question. What happened to Gant? A couple of weeks ago it seemed he was moving ahead of Davis.

  21. AlaWai August 28, 2012 7:18 am

Is Alex Dunnachie on the traveling squad? Could the suspensions float from game to game.

e.g. Punt at USC, suspended for Lamar etc.

  22. AlaWai August 28, 2012 7:20 am

Poor UH we no mo chance. wink, wink…

  23. HawaiiMongoose August 28, 2012 7:21 am

Hoping for good news on Pu`u-Robinson. It would be great to have him in the lineup Saturday.

  24. Stephen Tsai August 28, 2012 7:22 am

    Jeezy:

Not sure if he slipped or whether the others moved ahead, but at the moment, Stutzmann and Davis are 1-2 at X, with Harding and Stutzmann 1-2 at Z.

Stutzmann and Davis have done well the past week after being injured through most of the week on base.

  25. HawaiiMongoose August 28, 2012 7:23 am

I don’t really care to know what’s up with Dunnachie or what the plan is for punting until after kickoff on Saturday. If none of us know, USC likely doesn’t know either.

  26. Stephen Tsai August 28, 2012 7:24 am

Dunnachie, Shutter and Tachibana are suspended for this game.

  27. gigi-hawaii August 28, 2012 7:24 am

Why is there a news blackout regarding the punter position at UH? I can’t help wondering if Dunnachie will be on that plane…

  28. letsgowarriors August 28, 2012 7:25 am

is marrell jackson on the travel squad?

  29. gigi-hawaii August 28, 2012 7:25 am

    ok

  30. WarriorNY August 28, 2012 7:30 am

Special teams should be fun to watch on Saturday. Every time anyone asks anything about punting, Coach Demerest and Coach Chow have these smirks on their faces…

  33. mctruck August 28, 2012 7:47 am

  34. Stephen Tsai August 28, 2012 7:48 am

Marrell Jackson will be on the travel roster.

  35. Ryan_12177 August 28, 2012 7:53 am

What other freshman are on the travel roster?

  36. letsgowarriors August 28, 2012 7:55 am

id assume the true freshman are Ben Clarke, Phillips, JGW, Lakalaka and Fonua.

  37. SteveM August 28, 2012 7:57 am

    Good news on Ne’Quan Phillips!

Hey Tsaikos! A bunch of us need your help.

We have a group of about 13 going to the game at the Coliseum on Friday. Some of us are locals travelling from Hawaii, some are kamaaina from LA and other places on the mainland flying in. We’re looking to tailgate but don’t know where to do it. We hear a lot of the areas in the lot, around the stadium, and even on USC campus are going to already be taken.

Any tips? Any official/unofficial tailgates we could join? We have a tent, a bunch of chairs, and a grill. We’d love to be able to put those to use.

    Thanks!

  39. letsgowarriors August 28, 2012 8:00 am

Breaking News here in LA–Matt Barkley hits a person on a bike with his car. Police were not called. TMZ post pictures and now local news reporting police want to talk to Barkley. But no big deal nothing happened to Sanchez and Lineart when they sexually abused women. Just pay folks off. No biggie for USC. That’s how they do business.

Now Coliseum notes. There are no alcohol sales in the Coliseum. Just FYI. Expect fans to boo Norm Chow as they are still mad that Norm Chow was let go by Pete Carroll for the Sark. If they boo him just wave your Ti leaf. My kid just told me lots of kids from Mira Costa High School will be attending the game to support their teacher Cam Chow. We already got a verbal commit out of Mira Costa High School. So my kid said if you are sitting next to someone you don’t know spread the aloha. Expect drunk kids like you have never seen before. If you have an altercation just call security as there are lots of fights at the Coliseum. They even have a drunk tran there!

Safe travels. If you do not have a reservation for a space at the Coliseum for tailgate get there early. My friend said around 6 in the morning to get in line. But if you park at the Coliseum expect it to take at least 4 hours to get out after the game. Parking across the street starts at 80 dollars. Valet parking across the street is 150 dollars. Welcome to LA!

  63. letsgowarriors August 28, 2012 9:13 am

    Start time 6:00PM

    Saturday Day

Tailgate at the Coliseum for UHAA. Starts at noon.

Per the Coach request please be in your seats no later then

    4:00PM.

    Kick off 4:30 PM

Sam Chow food truck will be outside the Coliseum. Want poke? Heard he has plenty.

I really believe NC’s gameplan will be to try to play ball-control offense (mainly running the ball and short passes) and keep SC’s offense off the field. SC will probably still come out on top but I don’t think they will score anywhere close to 50 points.

    So now I’m wondering…

IMHO, Chow’s offense will be the lowest scoring offense in UH’s last 11 seasons. 🙁

But, we may have a better all-around defense and special teams play under Chow.

  90. profile August 28, 2012 11:29 am

  92. Bowwar August 28, 2012 11:37 am

I wish Norm Chow throws some trick plays or a series of “run & shoot” to throw the USC defense for a spin. I think that UH will resort to “rugby” punts to throw off the Trojans.

All we can do is hope for the best. I gotta say that USC fans are the most arrogant I’ve ever encountered on road games.

  93. primo888 August 28, 2012 11:42 am

    #89 – Gigi, thank you!

  94. Independent Thinker August 28, 2012 11:43 am

I agree with the analysis below:

Predictions are always dicey, especially when a new coach with a brand new system takes over a program.

Norm Chow has done that this year in Hawaii and there is both considerable buzz and excitement about the upcoming season.

But considering the tough slate the Warriors have ahead of them, is it warranted? Lets take a look at each game.

    Sept. 1: Hawaii at USC

Going to the Coliseum to face the Trojans is a daunting task even for perennial powerhouses. Yet this is where the Warriors will begin their season.

Led by quarterback Matt Barkley, the Trojans will be gunning for nothing less than a national championship.

Expect the Warriors to keep it close early as USC sees what schemes Norm Chow has put into place. UH will be trailing by halftime, but still very much in the game.

However, USC will make adjustments and by mid-third quarter their bigger, stronger, and faster athletes will begin to pull away. With Trojan title aspirations, the Warriors can expect no mercy. USC will be pressured to win and win big they will.

    Prediction: USC 63, UH 17

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

It’s getting close to “Chow Time!” GO Warriors!

  98. madeinhawaii August 28, 2012 12:03 pm

Kiffen vs Chow…. historically it seems like there might be more than a bit of bad blood between the two coaches… maybe buried after the past few years but there may still be a number of hot embers ready to be stoked. I was surprised when I did a search on “Kiffen vs Chow” . I don’t think that Chow has ever won against a Kiffen team.

  99. Ryan_12177 August 28, 2012 12:17 pm

Chow was Kiffen’s boss and he was ditched by Carroll to promote Kiffen either because he was worried of losing Kiffen or didn’t like Chow getting so much of the credit for the national championships… no one knows for sure but Kiffen says that Chow was a big part of his development as an offensive coach.

  100. Ryan_12177 August 28, 2012 12:18 pm

It is also worth noting that Kiffen wanted Chow to be his OC when he took over USC… and a few years back he said that Chow and hsi father were both legends as coordinators

  101. madeinhawaii August 28, 2012 12:19 pm

Wait.. I take that back.. Norm won as Coach for UCLA against Tennessee which was coached by Monte Kiffen, Lane’s dad.

  102. Ryan_12177 August 28, 2012 12:21 pm

Another interesting article form when Chow was rumored to be heading back to USC::

    The story goes like this:

Norm Chow and Lane Kiffin almost came across the table at each other during a USC staff meeting years ago. To say they hated each other was an understatement. Now we’re to believe that Kiffin may bring back Chow to USC — and Chow might come back? That’s what I’m getting through the grapevine.

I thought Chow would have been a great head coaching candidate at USC, if the school could get past his age (something like 64). Apparently, Mike Garrett wanted Kiffin to hire Chow. I don’t know if they would have come together on their own. Believe me, there is some serious animosity between the two.

That confrontation was the beginning of the end for Chow at USC. I’m told that’s when Pete Carroll figured he had to find a graceful way for Chow to leave. He did, leaving after the 2004 national championship for the Tennessee Titans …

  103. madeinhawaii August 28, 2012 12:21 pm

In recent years, however (Norm’s UCLA and Utah years), it has been Kiffen all the way. This time, however, Norm gets to pick his own players. Call all of his own plays.

  104. cincodemayonnaisse August 28, 2012 12:23 pm

Chow’s beat Kiffen a coupla times already….once in the NFL when Kitten was with the Raiders and Chow with the Titans. Once in college when Kiffen was at Tenn and Chow at UCLA.

The question isn’t whether Chow’s schemes can beat Kiffen.

It’s whether our guys, for on game, can be better than them. I have no doubt we’ll show up and play our hearts out.

We will meet up at a tailgate or benefit somewhere for name exchange.

Glad you received the game coupons.

    ‘Nuff said……Go Warriors!!

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 28, 2012 12:33 pm

    #90,

I pray you are right. I have no problems being wrong with my prediction.

  108. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 28, 2012 12:37 pm

USC hired Kiffen because they knew that daddy would tag along. That’s who they really wanted imo. Tampa 2.

  109. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 28, 2012 12:39 pm

Monte Kiffen and Norm Chow together at SC with Orgeron leading recruiting would have been a sick staff. Glad it didn’t happen that way.

  110. Ryan_12177 August 28, 2012 12:45 pm

Was reading how the nail in the coffinw as that Kiffen and Chow nearly had a physical fight so Carroll pretty much had to choose one or the other….

  111. Don Weir (We-Ah) August 28, 2012 12:56 pm

    Tom Kitaguchi

Just received a call from my road team roommate Lueke.

FB Alums and fellow 72-73 teammates planning on UH vs USC Friday reception, pre-game tailgate and game include Bob Lueke, Dan Davis, and Moses Gutierrez.

Let’s plan on getting all of the Letterwinners together at the tailgate, get some photos, and get e-mails to keep all in the comm loop for future events and UH support.

  112. mctruck August 28, 2012 12:57 pm

Taking SteveM., advice….I now have t-leaves in both hands, and facing west…I can see clearly now; Warrior rb’s and O-line continue to wear out the Trojan defensive front along with the Warrior’s TE’s and slots who run the lb’s and db’s crazy….our Warriors prevail.

Only thing is……where do the polls place UH the following week????

  113. Buffoman August 28, 2012 1:13 pm

Getting back to the Wonder Blunder in Manoa, what of the promoter Payton? Is he free and clear of any wrongdoing? Did he really also send $50k? Seems odd that he could if he was filing for bankruptcy (sp?).

    USC – 17

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO WAHINE!

For the record, I’m anti-rail. Pro-fireworks. Different strokes for different folks.

  116. jimmy the lock August 28, 2012 1:20 pm

oh, score already taken, so I will predict UH-20 USC-18.

  117. jimmy the lock August 28, 2012 1:25 pm

Based on Caldwell’s color scheme, he is not going to win the election. Green and red? He should throw in some yellow and black and go reggae. The maybe get chance.

  118. A-joe August 28, 2012 1:32 pm

    iwwthm-

You’d tell Daniel Inouye he can’t succeed because he doesn’t have an arm. But… you’d have no problem being wrong.

You’d tell Patsy Mink she’d never succumb to anything because she’s a female from Hawaii trying to run around in a man’s world. But… you’d have no problem being wrong.

You’d tell Ellison Onizuka no bare feet Hawaii kid from Kona could ever become an astronaut. But… you’d have no problem being wrong.

You’d tell Barry he can’t be president because he’s one Hawaiian braddah. But… you’d have no problem being wrong.

To me, that’s half ass. You sked of criticism. You afraid of losing. You’re embarrassed of the possibility of seeing UH get blown out. But, you more than ready to basque in the glory if there’s a miracle.

Sometimes you just gotta put yourself on the line. Stand up and be a man! Grow some balls! No Sked!!

Don’t you think our boys know what their up against? Don’t you think they don’t read this blog? Imagine if it was you and you turn around to see none of your friends and family supporting you. Yeah, that’s motivating!

I actually don’t mind idiots who come on the blog and bad mouth UH. At least I know their true colors and where they stand. But to me, half ass fans are worse. They around when the goings good, but never around when the goings bad. If they are, they talking smack. (like that ever helps everyon but themselves)

Never ever be afraid to lose! (Especially if you’re just a fricken damn spectator!) But, if you are, please please please take up another hobby. Being a true UH fan is too dangerous and extremely detrimental to your feelings. You going get hurt. We wouldn’t want that to happen…

  119. madeinhawaii August 28, 2012 1:35 pm

USC might have two of the best receivers in the Nation, but our receivers are no slouches, either. I think our guys know how to run routes and go up and grab onto the ball. Chow knows how to get his man open and the Warriors will score points. I see Chow wanting to score fast and often and if they can score on their first drive, expect our Defense to really get inspired to give the Offense another opportunity ASAP. I’m getting real excited…

  120. A-joe August 28, 2012 1:41 pm

More than any other time, our boys need all of our support.

They can handle the rest of the world not believing in them. It’s disheartening to know the very ones behind them don’t as well.

Just think 300. They knew what they were up against. They knew of their fate.

    They fought anyway!

I MUA WARRIORS!! FIGHT LIKE CHAMPIONS!! REPRESENT US WELL!!

  121. Shoko August 28, 2012 1:46 pm

  130. jm2375 August 28, 2012 2:11 pm

You run into fellow Tsaikos in the strangest places. Had to go drop stuff off at hubby’s office today. The Army bases are now making every one get a parking pass, so guess who was in front of me in line at the Ft Shafter pass office? Chopsueyboy! Nice to see him again.

Guess we should be careful about scheduling cc’s at Hale Ikena. All those without a DoD-issued ID will need to present:

    1) photo ID

    2) car registration

    3) no-fault card

    4) safety check

    5) note from your mother (j/k)

Sheesh. Took longer to get the pass than to drop the stuff off.

  131. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 28, 2012 2:12 pm

    a-joe,

i will somehow just have to live with being a half ass fan and ur disapproval. 😉

That was a good interview with Coach Chow.. didn’t like the first question though. I mean, first year as a head coach for a team he’s never coached before and the first question is about Utah? The team he was OC for last year that is not even in the MWC anymore?

  138. koakane August 28, 2012 2:29 pm

WHOAAA….Tell Ma must have been good with all da burping going on….LMAO

  146. Shoko August 28, 2012 2:51 pm

Speaking of Brian Johnson, would he be categorized as the youngest OC ever hired at the D1 level? I know Rolo was 31, but Johnson was 24 when he got offered the Utah OC job.

  147. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 28, 2012 2:52 pm

It’s also interesting to take my comments about a game, a football game, and put them on the same level as the accomplishments of our senior senator, our president, and our late congresswoman. not insulting to their career or accomplishments whatsoever.

comparing me to someone who would discriminate against the handicapped, a sexist, or a racist is also an awesome thing.

it’s a football game. good god.

  148. A-joe August 28, 2012 2:52 pm

iwwthm- at least I know where you stand. Lol

Mahalo al. BTW- do I credit you for the ono Dinaguang as well?

  149. A-joe August 28, 2012 2:55 pm

iwwthm- I won’t take you seriously. (What was I thinking. Sorry.)

Yup. It’s just a game. Nothing to do with life. Move on…

  150. (Jesse) James August 28, 2012 2:58 pm

Going to Damien, I always knew what it was like to lose, but we always held our heads up high and always gave 110 percent…nothing to be ashamed of and always was supported by our classmates, alumni, and families…..

  151. madeinhawaii August 28, 2012 3:11 pm

Ah… “Damien” … back in the day, wasn’t that high school football jargon for a “bye week” ?

    j/k and running for cover!

  152. oldtimer808 August 28, 2012 3:19 pm

Mahalo to KHON TV/NBC for telecasting this game on Saturday. Play hard Warriors no matter the result. Who knows this team may shock the world and that’s why the game is played.

  153. Ryan_12177 August 28, 2012 3:20 pm

Sounds like a plan.. my wife and I are looking to retire there(we got married there 4 years ago), though that si still a long ways off… but we try to come back at least once a year…

The funniest thing is that because I’m from the East Coast I had never been before our wedding and complained the entire time about it being a waste of money and then I fell in love with the islands when I got there and I complain when we go 6 months without being back…

  154. A-joe August 28, 2012 3:24 pm

Always know the islands will always be here for you and your ‘Ohana.

  230. Bigislandkurt August 28, 2012 10:52 pm

It’s a new day and age for Warrior football. We can dink and dunk all the way down the field for all I care. Offense: Move da chains, control the ball, and score points. No silly mistakes. Keep that Trojan offense off of the field and we just might make this interesting.

    BIK

  231. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 28, 2012 11:01 pm

    lmao

  232. Think2much August 28, 2012 11:14 pm

Its funny that despite how poorly last season ended, dashed hopes and dreams, it all fades into a new, fresh bundle of excitement and anticipation as the new season rolls around. What is interesting is Coach Chow’s business like demeanor. It reflects confidence, experience, and reality. Coach Chow knows what he’s capable of but he doesn’t know his staff and the players under fire. But you know he’s paid attention to details, he knows they’ve prepared properly, and he knows the opponents. He has established the goals, expectations, and made the promises. We know none of these are hollow but, we the fans, have a need to see the product in action. He doesn’t seemed worried so why should we? He’s not promising a win but he says the ball bounces funny sometimes, often. For him being so low keyed, he’s really generating a lot of excitement!

  233. Marisha Palomin August 28, 2012 11:24 pm

I really enjoy playing minecraft. This is definitely a game which allows anyone to show off their creativeness. I’m so hooked on it!

CWD, re. #276. I’ve met you, and you are a wonderful, passionate and intelligent lady! NOT ugly!

SteveM: Maybe, the next contest should be name the 3 year old Tsaiko?

mo808 — I noticed your suggestion when I was at work Monday. The thought of Al, Bulla and DPK as 3 year olds must have overloaded my imagination and caused amnesia. 😐

Maybe a mother Tsaikette should organize such a contest and pry those baby photos out…hmmm, why does Wena, Mrs. A-House, and Colomaohana come to mind? 😕 🙂

  235. New samsung August 29, 2012 12:12 am

Bicyclist: Yo, stoopid! Can’t see I’m riding across here? What the heck? Pay attention, Man!

Barkley: Oh, man. Sorry. Are you a Trojan Man?

Bicyclist: Yeah, I use Trojans. Why?

Barkley: No, man. I meant, are you a fan of USC?

Bicyclist: Oh. Yeah, I guess so.

Barkley: Oh great, man! I’m Matt Barkley. You know… the star QB. Everything’s aligning just right this year, so I should win the Heisman.

    Bicyclist: What?

Barkley: Sorry, man. Was talking to a booster about trading in this ride for something sweeter. Didn’t see you crossing the driveway here. So, you okay?

Bicyclist: Oh, you play for the football team?

Barkley: Yeah, man. I’m their biggest star. So, we don’t need any police involvement, right? Give me your name and number, and I’ll make sure you get a new bike.

Bicyclist: You’re lucky my ex is from UCLA. Otherwise… wait, a new bike? Really? Okay.

Barkley: Remember, no cops. Oh shat! TMZ! I gotta go!

I have seen lots of useful items on your internet site about personal computers. However, I’ve the judgment that netbooks are still not nearly powerful adequately to be a good selection if you normally do jobs that require lots of power, for example video modifying. But for world wide web surfing, microsoft word processing, and the majority of other prevalent computer functions they are fine, provided you do not mind the small screen size. Thank you sharing your notions.

  242. wafan August 29, 2012 3:21 am

Time for an entire day of rambling meetings.

    Yay.

    NOT!

  243. Wes'side Warrior August 29, 2012 3:47 am

Looking at those pics on TMZ… I wouldn’t be surprised if the guy that got hit by Barkley was an illegal immigrant, and that’s why he didn’t want the police called. Just saying…

  244. mo808 August 29, 2012 3:55 am

    Good Morning All!

    3 more till season starts…

    GO WARRIORS!! BEAT USC!!

  245. mo808 August 29, 2012 4:19 am

@234. SteveM, you never know…those suspects at age 3 might make the guessing a lot more difficult!

@173.. Ipuman, thanks for the TMZ photos!

I guess no backlash for the “star” QB of USC huh? The guy could well be an illegal immigrant just as WW suggested and that’s why no call to 911.

  246. mo808 August 29, 2012 4:33 am

Quote from Coach Chow; ST’s article today (on focusing his players):

“I’m sure that’s going to be a problem,” Chow said. “We have to get to playing and not who we’re playing. It’s faceless names.”

Keep it all business Warriors! Clear Minds & Full Heart! Play to win every quarter! Your playing faceless names!

  247. d1shima August 29, 2012 4:39 am

Kekoa… I search for Po’ folks restaurants in Atlanta, and I get “Folks” restaurants pop up. “Po’ Folks” are only in Florida and Alabama, unless the ones here in Georgia were renamed. Menu and food pics look ‘ono, and there’s a location just 5-7 minutes down the road.

Will have to visit that place sometime. Wife wants to go to a Korean restaurant this weekend. Gotta listen to da boss… only way to make it another 23+ years!

  267. A-House August 29, 2012 6:51 am

    Travel roster?

Why wouldn’t UH have a travel roster in place now since they travel on Thursday to arrive same nite in LA?

What would TSA say about the UH manifest coming in so late? Rush. Rush. Rush. Besides if late, how will airline assign seats or jus go sit where evah?

4:55 am this morning my phone rings – it’s a claim adjuster calling from Texas wanting to know how the repairs are going with my broken hot wate pipe in the slab – eye says 2 her, “it’s not 5 am here – she goes “oh so sorry, I just got in and decided to call you without thinking about the 5 hour time difference” – good ting eye was up!

Was it not a done deal a few years back or just a pipe dream? Is Michigan in Ann Habor?

Yes, Michigan is in Ann Arbor. Hope it comes to fuition because that would be a great game.
