UH passes on Tate

The Warriors have abandoned efforts to recruit Tate Forcier, apparently because the former Michigan quarterback does not project to meet the requirement to enroll at UH this fall, according to people familiar with the situation. UH’s fall semester begins Aug. 22.

Forcier had told ESPN and the WB that he would be visiting UH this weekend. He even sent UH his transcripts, the Warriors’ requirement for an official recruiting trip.

The Warriors, who were extremely interested in bringing in Forcier for a get-to-know-you meeting, apparently withdrew from the running because it could not be determined when Forcier would be able to join the team. Because Forcier must sit out a season as a condition of transferring, if he had chosen UH, it was hoped he could learn the system this fall and compete for a starting job in the spring.

The Warriors are recruiting two other quarterbacks. If they choose UH, they would be eligible to join the Warriors in January.

  4. losthawaiian July 20, 2011 12:10 am

    Make that #1 and 3.

  7. Al July 20, 2011 12:15 am

    JC recruits ?

” The Warriors are recruiting two other quarterbacks. If they choose UH, they would be eligible to join the Warriors in January. “

  9. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 12:26 am

As I understand it, one is a high school guy who just qualified.

  10. protector July 20, 2011 12:36 am

Kinda glad this was cleared up before Fall camp. I also believe the decision is somewhat of a relief and will give peace of mind to a couple of the QBs on the team who have been here for awhile. Go Warriors!

  11. chawan_cut July 20, 2011 12:38 am

aiya. academics!!! no school, no ball. sorry!

  12. SteveM July 20, 2011 12:40 am

Hmmm…both bad news and good news.

(Football) life and the Warrior Beat goes on…

  13. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 12:44 am

UH wanted him. It would have waited except there are two prospects it didn’t want to lose.

Forcier would have had two seasons to play; others have more.

  14. chawan_cut July 20, 2011 12:47 am

i wonder if that was the reason for miami saying no too.

maybe san jose will take him.

  15. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 12:51 am

    Re: Miami.

Supposedly they reneged on certain promises.

    thanks!

    nite!

  17. Kevin July 20, 2011 1:26 am

Ok. Now we can move on.

  18. Kevin July 20, 2011 1:47 am

I just know there will be some that will weasel blame to Coach Mack and Co or even UH admissions for this.

Facts have no place in arguements when short-sighted sports fans are irate.

  19. A-joe July 20, 2011 1:50 am

das ok. We go into battle with gunz we get!

    GOING!!

  20. Kevin July 20, 2011 2:15 am

Personally I am glad UH compliance and admissions did their due dilligence and the correct decision was made. This is still COLLEGE athletics and student-athletes are students first.

As fans and supporters let’s continue to backup the 400+ student-athletes we have and all those coming in that did what they needed to do in the classroom to represent the GREEN and WHITE.

A lot of parents of future Warriors and Rainbow Wahine from here in Hawaii and across the country and even internationally take the time and steps needed to send their children to a division 1 athletic program and the sacrifices they make, as well as their children, are tremendous. For this, we must remain appreciative and welcoming for them.

No time to “mourn” or even to try to find blame, UH can be a second chance for those needing it, but it goes BOTH ways.

    Pau.

    Going to bed!

  22. mctruck July 20, 2011 3:47 am

UH will be just fine with regards their qb’s for this year; as for 2012, I’m sure they will continue to reload and be ready for the MWC.

  23. mctruck July 20, 2011 3:48 am

can’t wait to see who the other two(2) qb’s are??

  24. Bulla July 20, 2011 4:13 am

Academics still comes before athletics, not only in the dictionary but also in a student-athlete’s life, but that’s why they are called student-athletes……good luck to all, and GO WARRIORS

  25. Garret July 20, 2011 4:35 am

If the Academics weren’t there, UH had no use for Forcier. UH didn’t end their recruitment of Forcier…he just didn’t take care of business in the classroom.

I support UH’s decision 100% in this. Maybe this is the reason that Forcier took his time sending the transcripts to UH…

  26. Garret July 20, 2011 4:48 am

    Re-stating things:

UH didn’t end their recruitment of Forcier…he ended it by not taking care of business in the classroom.

  27. Bulla July 20, 2011 4:50 am

    Garret,

i agree, it’s just like business, letter of intent and followed by conditions of agreement with a clause for lack of performance….it’s business baby, but we just call it college athletics, haha 🙂

  28. mctruck July 20, 2011 5:25 am

Howzit, brothers: Garret and Bulla; yeah you guys hit the nail on da-head.

good morning to all u Tsaiko’s tand have a great day…..out4eats.

  30. Bulla July 20, 2011 5:31 am

    mc,

knowing first-hand about the NCAA compliance challenges, i am glad that UH’s Compliance Dept. has stepped up, in the long run, it is better for UH to toe the line instead of hearing ‘i toe you so’ from NCAA, (No Clue At All)….

be blessed not stressed my brother, and keep smiling 🙂

  31. Garret July 20, 2011 5:38 am

BYU has figured out how to make money from having sports on BYUtv. This furthers their financial incentive to remain indy…and insures that their non-football teams won’t be going back to the MWC or joining any conference that doesn’t give their schools the right to broadcast games not on national TV.

BYUtv is having no trouble selling advertising for its upcoming telecasts of Cougar football and basketball games. They’re just not calling it advertising.

“We call it underwriting or sponsorships,” said Derek Marquis, managing director of BYU Broadcasting. “How do you think PBS survives?”

  32. Southbay July 20, 2011 5:39 am

Stephen: I’m assuming the 2 QBs we are recruiting does not include Justin Alo since you mention one just qualified and Alo has not yet. Does this mean that if Alo qualifies we are looking at 3 new potential QBs for the spring? Or are we assuming Alo might not qualify?

    Have a great day, everyone!

  36. rage777 July 20, 2011 5:51 am

Does UH really have a Compliance Department or even a Compliance Office? I thought it was just one person and a helper or assistant.

  37. Bulla July 20, 2011 6:09 am

    rage,

from our experience a year ago, one person and one assistant due to cutbacks. IMHO, they are way understaffed for what they are responsible for….

  38. el burro sabio July 20, 2011 6:10 am

しかたがない. Move on to the next QB candidates.

  39. bigislandkurt July 20, 2011 6:16 am

    Po ho dis guy!

    BIK

  40. papajoe2 July 20, 2011 6:18 am

Jim Leahey doing volleyball next season. Which one? Men or women or both. Although I love Mr. Leahey’s colorful descriptions, I think volleyball may have gotten just a little too fast for him, especially the men’s game. Now baseball………I’d be disappointed if he doesn’t do that. He and Pal talks stories between pitches and trips to the mound by coaches. I love that as it takes away the slow pace of the game.

  41. papajoe2 July 20, 2011 6:22 am

Its almost time for football and this Forcier thing kept us blogger buzzing. I always trusted the coaches decisions and if he didn’t qualify so be it. Better than trying to get him in, then a school that also tried may blow the whistle on UH. Like the WB people always say, “If can, can. No can, no can.”

  42. huh? July 20, 2011 6:33 am

    two weeks of courtship

    two weeks of waiting

    mix them together

    Pop! goes the weasel.

  43. Shoko July 20, 2011 6:39 am

    Morning folks!

Well, Warriors already have a nice stable of QBs. Maybe Forcier can get into a solid JC somewheres.

  44. rage777 July 20, 2011 6:40 am

    Bulla,

I understand, I was just wondering if you can call it a department or an office if it’s just one person and an assistant. Wouldn’t that be called a Compliance person. I do agree that they are way understaffed, but you can say that about a lot of positions. What about the video editing people?

  45. Dennis Halloran July 20, 2011 6:41 am

He probably qualified out of HS, but too many WD’s and INC since HS and the always suspect ONLINE classes

  46. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 6:47 am

    papajoe:

They haven’t announced the full list of announcers.

But word is Jim Leahey would be doing women’s volleyball, not men’s volleyball.

  47. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 6:50 am

    Garret:

There is an existing BYU channel (one shown in Hawaii).

Is that the same one BYU will use for sports?

If so, it already has the built-in infrastructure.

If the sports channel is a start-up, then that initial sales are very impressive.

  48. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 6:56 am

    southbay:

There is the assumption that there will be two new QBs for the 2012 class, with both joining in January and not the summer.

Graves is considered the leading candidate for 2012. Even if Forcier had come to UH, it does not mean he would have beaten out Graves.

  49. Garret July 20, 2011 6:56 am

    ST,

The BYU channel that is already distributed across the country will be the one that will show BYU sporting events. That is a nice boost for their exposure and recruiting…and they have figured out a way to make money from it also.

  50. CoolEthan July 20, 2011 6:58 am

Too bad about Tate- Has the ability to up the level of intensity for the QB competition.

Will keep tabs on where he lands, very interested in seeing him play where he can stay grounded.

  51. Garret July 20, 2011 7:01 am

Could UH offer an “educational” channel like BYU does? That channel could show UH lectures, Hawaii cultural events, and so on and provide worldwide exposure for UH Academics and Athletics. Every TV provider carries Educational channels and those channels cannot accept advertising…but sponsorships (wink, wink) are okay for educational channels.

The HTA would be an obvious sponsor for the channel since it would basically be a 24-hour advertisement for Hawaii.

  52. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 7:10 am

Olelo shows UH lectures on channel 55 digital.

    Pret-ty dry.

  53. BG July 20, 2011 7:30 am

Good morning gang! Enjoy the beautiful day! bbl

  54. BG July 20, 2011 7:38 am

If Tate had made it here…great. He didn’t make it…that’s OK too. I have great faith in the coaches choosing the best path for Warrior football. Best wishes for Tate in taking the steps to making a second chance come true and taking full advantage of it.

  55. Ballpicker July 20, 2011 7:38 am

    Good morning DPK,

I got ur aloja message from yesterday.. All is well withe the ballpicker.

    Almost time for some FOOTBALL!

  56. chopsueyboy July 20, 2011 7:39 am

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

  57. warriorsun July 20, 2011 7:44 am

the tate forcier lap dance only illustrates the depth of need for a quality warrior QB in 2012.

mac showed this angst in joining a nationwide possee of football coaches in hot pursuit of forcier, a franchise talent with as many groans as wows…. and, the red flag that popped-up for most observers is when usc said “no thanks, we are stocked”, but invited a migrant cornhusker QB, cody greene, to visit their trojan campus. usc held no reserve in pursuing the embattled mitch mustain from arkansas three years ago.

now, rolo has been a busy little chimpmunk in stashing away QBs in his lower manoa tree. he has graves, shutter, spain, higgins, nielson and alo coming in this spring. SIX! now, according to mac, two more on the way. eight! yikes!

dont get me wrong, give credit to mac and rolo for their perseverance.

still, it does leave one to wonder how many scholies does it take and how many will remain for other areas in need?

better yet, why is our learning curve so costly?

AND as we learned from the JJ era of stocking QBs en masse, the scholie-trickle-down effect does impact other units on the hawaii team. during JJ’s tenure it meant our DB unit took a hit.

    deja vu?

  58. CoolEthan July 20, 2011 7:46 am

Ok, Where is the Buffalo pic djour ?

The official countdown did begin with the Ralphie pic, yes?

Also, would the rock group, Buffalo Springfield. qualify? Ahh, that was weak. sorry.

  59. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 7:48 am

    CoolEthan:

That’s good. I’ll hunt down a pic. Thanks.

  60. A-joe July 20, 2011 8:06 am

The only incentive a company would have to “donate” money to BYU would be the potential of a tax right off.

BYU Athletics has figured out a loophole to fall under a 501c3 umbrella.

Private religious academic institutions will take note and follow suit.

  61. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 8:08 am

I imagine the BYU channel will have a lot of BYU fans and Mormons, but I wonder what the subscription percentage will be for non-LDS members.

  62. huh? July 20, 2011 8:19 am

idk but i’ll take the liberty of asking

there are criterias for entrance and admission to school

and there are also Coach Mack’s criterias in players being part of the team in the fall

mack has stated emphatically that players adhere to his rules

irregardless of being NCAA elgible for season, or being in good standing with school

mack has his own perameters. mack is very strict. mack has his own guidelines.

we’ll probably never know in this case

but if forceir pops up at another D-1 school and is granted admission

then it would seem that macks criterias for admission supercedes the schools admission

mack’s standards are written in stone–no grades, no suit up in the fall: have grades be on pace to graduate suit up in the fall.

what value would forceir had been to the team even if he was accepted but didnt pass macks inspection and guidelines to practice in the fall

  63. CoolEthan July 20, 2011 8:20 am

  64. warriorsun July 20, 2011 8:23 am

    #57. et seq.

rolo and mac will need to make a QB scholie re-evaluation following spring 2012 to trim its tree. a routine pruning process coaches exercise to sustain the maintenance for a healthy growing football program.

when it comes to hawaii and it’s QBs, latent-talent is like bad-knees.

within two years, cream should rise to the top. otherwise we may become known as back-up-QB-U.

  65. warriorsun July 20, 2011 8:37 am

huh? #62, re criterias (ur grammer)

    criteria (p)

    criterion (s).

  66. Funi July 20, 2011 8:39 am

Tate forcier must be an idiot to not qualify and UH is dumb for ending the courtship. Look at ohio state they don’t care if there players are ineligible, they still play them!

  67. Funi July 20, 2011 8:40 am

BTW our QB situation better improve fast bc we got some real plugs in the waiting.

  68. warriorsun July 20, 2011 8:48 am

    lets look at ohio state,

their national championship head coach resigned and their heisman QB vacated before his senior year….that’s the price you pay for not caring.

  69. jm2375 July 20, 2011 8:48 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Forcier – whateva. Move on. If no can make da grade, we no like.

ST – BYUtv is standard on some DishNetwork packages (like the one I have). Watched the UH-BYU men’s vb games last season. Screecher and I were yelling at the tv…. Stupid gym is a glorified HS gym. Not enough room to serve, too many fans in the way.

  70. jm2375 July 20, 2011 8:49 am

  75. Bryson July 20, 2011 9:01 am

Recruiting involves 2 Parties…If one side doesn’t hold up their end of the bargain theres not much the other side can do…Best of Luck to Mr.Forcier where ever he may land…

  76. haka July 20, 2011 9:10 am

    Go Warriors!

    Go Wahine!

  77. Garret July 20, 2011 9:10 am

The UFL commissioner tried to put the best spin on his league’s future as possible, but it sounds like Colt, RGM, Patek and the rest of the UFL players need to find somewhere else to play.

The UFL said on July 19 that it was delaying the start of its season from mid-August to mid-September, that players were being sent home from training camps and that the future of the league beyond this year needed help of major proportions — including financial assistance from the NFL.

It’s no secret that we’ve lost over $100 million in the first two seasons. We plan to spend $50 million this year . . . I think ultimately we’re going to need a partner if we’re to survive. It’s a revenue problem. We need to generate a better television deal. We need to bring in new investors. Our owners have said this will be the last year they go it alone.

    http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2011/07/20/qampa-commissioner-michael-huyghue-faces-reality-of-ufls-future/

  78. Derek July 20, 2011 9:14 am

I was never confident that Forcier would show up and join the program. Coach Mack and Co. made the right decision. We want good football players, but school is just as important and I’m sure Mack’s goal is that every UH football player get their degree. Simple as that.

Plus, UH is the most difficult school to get into in the WAC and the second most in the MWC, aside from Air Force. Thus, the search for the “Holy Grail” continues. We have to have a good QB in 2012. The first game that year is @ USC. The second game that year is @ BYU. Can you say, “Holy Big Time!” Can you remember when was the last time a UH football team beat a BCS conference team “ON THE ROAD.” Was it the Holiday Bowl against Illinois in 1992 or do we call it a game on a neutral field? Or was it at Oregon when Darrack Branch scored the winning touchdown? That that back, it wasn’t that long ago. I was at the game in 2009 when UH beat Wash St. in Seattle, but is that also on a neutral field? To go into someone’s backyard and win is very, very difficult. This is why the game on Sept. 10 against the Huskies in Seattle is so tough. Sarkisian has the Huskies improving with every year. And he has even gotten some Hawaii players. I feel we will be 2 touchdowns underdogs for that game. It is imperative that we beat the Colorado Tatonkas on Sept. 3 otherwise we will be looking at potentially an 0-2 start with @ UNLV the following week on Sept. 17. Ideally, we want to be 2-1 after 3 games and that would would be a good start.

Going 3-0 would be unbelievable, but I would like that right now. So, for me, the most important game is Colorado as far as setting up the season to be a successful one.

My vote for men’s volleyball play by play on OC16 is Scott Robbs. “Crush the coconut”!

    Forcier WHO??…

Nothing to look at here…can we move on please?

  83. warriorsun July 20, 2011 9:44 am

the tate forcier pursuit raises more questions than it answers on the second-floor.

OK, his uh admission is nixed and recruitment thereby rendered moot. agreed.

but as i laid out in #57, et seq, recruiting QBs en masse is hardly irrelevant.

somewhere along the line, it will create sholie shortages on other units.

i cant say if rolo is blind, shot-gunning or needs a mob to keep him company at practice.

perhaps. all three. this we know, we are soon-to-be-looking at 8-QBs on the roster….and, not one stands out for a critical 2012 debut in the mwc…..move on? i believe this QB crisis deserves more thought…and discussion.

    #87. couch potato. great questions.

i always try to answer questions through the acts of others. it’s subtle, yet informative if you can reason. as an example. mac said he is recruiting two-QBs. one for now, and the later for the future. that should furnish a clue. we have enuff-back-ups dont we? so, mac is looking frontline stater. there you go. hope i answered one question.

#2. david graves is the only current QB on our roster i see with deep talent to play multi-positions on eitherside of the ball. jmo.

#3 as far as rolo is concerned–he has to be looking at graves, cayman and higgins….maybe in that pecking order. for me, i’d be looking southpaw, then the other two. i saw cayman and graves in the spring game–higgins needs a long look.

#4 luncheon meat or spam? what’s the difference? the warrior program needs certfied usda prime rib-eye steak.

  94. RedZone July 20, 2011 10:20 am

No qb dramas in the offseason makes for a good qb situation during the season. Tate got his shot and did not make the grade. I still wish him the best of luck but there are thousands who are trying to find a place on a college football team.

    Morning to all you Tsai-kos

Trying to catch up on readings and see that many of you Tsai-kos are disappointed in Tate’s situation.

    I recall meeting Mr. Gouveia when he was first hired as Compliance Officer;

he and coach mack as very stand up moral character guys. They have helped many athletics to qualify at UH Manoa either thru gray shirt, red shirt, white shirt; they create a approach to build NCAA and UH Manoa qualifying standard for Warrior roster year after year.

And I believe they’ve done the research and Tate was not a Warrior qualifying athlete period.

Same as two other Gibs basketball recruits who failed to qualify.

And I believe as many of you were looking forward to these athletes coming to Manoa campus wearing a Warrior uniform.

And no doubt they would have upgraded both football and basketball program for all of us faithful Warrior fans.

But we don’t need to be like other big BCS program to lower our standard to become a Winning Program.

And Best of Luck to Mr.Forcier where ever he may land. There is always Division II Program. And still make it to NFL

UFL players need to find somewhere else to play.

It’s too bad UFL didn’t materialize. With a dead month of July/August for sports would have been great reason to watch the up and coming NFL qualifiers play.

What ever happen to the European World League NFL use to send players and sanction? That’s what UFL needed to survive.

    warriorsun,

“the tate forcier pursuit raises more questions than it answers on the second-floor.”

I never got the impression Coach Mack was in pursuit of Forcier. It was my impression Forcier is in pursuit of UH. I have no idea what questions have been raised by Forcier’s pursuit of UH.

  108. al July 20, 2011 11:22 am

  109. Garret July 20, 2011 11:25 am

The SEC’s Commissioner laid out the changes that they have been discussing with other conferences and hopes to get approved by the NCAA. The SEC is working with other conferences to make widespread changes to the NCAA rules, against the wishes of their football coaches in some cases (like the higher GPA requirement). Quick summary:

    1. Increase scholarships to the “true value” of attendance. We discussed this earlier and it would cost about $1 mil/year for UH to adhere to this assuming that all scholarship athletes (men and women) would be covered.

    2. Make scholarships for multiple years instead of year-to-year. This would prevent schools from oversigning one year and then cutting scholarship players to make room. SEC coaches are the biggest example of the need for this rule since they cut so many players due to their oversigning.

    3. Some financial aid to be made available for former student-athletes to get their undergraduate degrees outside of the current 6-year window. I like this rule and wish that all student-athletes could get their degree.

    4. Work with the NFL to restrict agents from contacting college players.

    5. Increase the minimum high school GPA for incoming freshmen from 2.0 to 2.5 in the 16 required core courses. An athlete can still get a scholarship if he/she doesn’t have a 2.5 high school GPA, but they can’t play as a freshman. This would exclude a lot of the recruits that the SEC takes now but might not be as harsh for UH due to UH’s higher admission standards.

    6. Extend the APR to high schools, so if an athlete doesn’t meet annual GPA and class progress standards they cannot play as a freshman. I don’t see how this would work since it would require a lot of work for the high schools.

I was just getting that off my chest. A few weeks ago Coach Mack was getting slammed for not aggressively pursuing Forcier while at the same time getting slammed for pursuing Forcier with both sides wondering if Mack had a clue about recruiting. All the while Coach Mack was unable to say a word about the situation. This must have been a maddening time for him.

  115. al July 20, 2011 11:55 am

    couch potato…how many qb’s do we have…really?

the early assessment does list a top three for 2012 and yes, higgins is opening many eyes during the unsupervised workouts.

the staff wanted to add at least one guy with more game experience. is that a catch-22? the former michigan guy would have fit the bill, meanwhile on the horizon are two qb’s eligible to enroll/transfer by january.

one is a jc dude who has his academics in order who could enroll in january and participate in spring ball and summer workouts prior to entering the fall camp of 2012.

the second is a hs guy with great academics obviously who could also enroll in january in the same way that billy ray did. (this is becoming more and more the case with many recruits across the country, the early qualifier.)

come january we will have 5 carry over qb’s from our current roster:

one has to show that his surgically repaired shoulder can toss the rock 50x per game.

    another, should seek a transfer.

one, is the currently projected number one next year.

another, is the currently projected number two for next year.

a new transfer, once recruited by hawaii has returned and is opening eyes.

then there is a recruited january greyshirt who has yet to become eligible.

the two new guys, well they could be replacing one who may not even get here and then one to add to the immediate mix of potential starters.

i believe this is what they are thinking, well, at least this what that little majiro has been tweeting.

  116. Da Punchbowl Kid July 20, 2011 11:57 am

When we had the chat with Coach Mack, it was very clear that he’s an academics – first kind of a coach. UH Football has one of the better graduation rates rates around and Coach is proactive in that regard. That’s a big plus for him and the players. Coach and others describe this year’s team as being very smart collectively. Have to trust Mack’s policies, as we see the results. There will be other QB candidates to ponder.

Currently , we have another version of the “holy grail” starting at QB. Before he became a starter, no one predicted the success Moniz has come to enjoy. Who’s to say we don’t have another HG waiting in the wings?

Further, with its current offense and a string of great coaches over the years, who’s to say UH isn’t partially responsible for “building” its own “holy grails” ala Chang, Brennan, and Moniz?

  117. Curt July 20, 2011 11:58 am

If I recall correctly, the second floor has two dance studios, a snack bar, 2 practice gyms…and a partridge in a pear tree.

  118. HawaiiMongoose July 20, 2011 11:59 am

Garret, interesting proposals by the SEC commissioner. It almost makes you wonder if this is a pre-emptive move intended to draw some of the spotlight away from further revelations of NCAA violations by SEC schools.

  119. al July 20, 2011 12:01 pm

i believe that mack takes the forcier situation with a grain of salt. he’s been in this recruit game long enough to know that you’ll experience many of these hit and miss episodes.

but, you still need to go up to bat. relavent to baseball getting a hit in one of three tries is awesome numbers. i would imagine that in football recruiting the average is way below that.

  120. al July 20, 2011 12:01 pm

  124. al July 20, 2011 12:09 pm

why do we need 6-8 qb’s on this team?

    13 wr’s

    7 sb’s

    7 rb’s

just to facilitate enough reps in practice we need a bevy of arms.

also, at least one qb to run the scout team.

if anything we have too many rb’s right now as well. we could use another lineman or two. but, it is what it is.

Small bit of early info for those SoCal drivers planning to be here for the UNLV game.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — California transportation officials say overnight road work will create lane restrictions until October on more than 50 miles of Interstate 15 from a few miles west of Baker, Calif., to the Nevada state line.

A Caltrans statement says work was to start Monday on resurfacing the freeway from Rasor Road in California’s San Bernardino County to Nevada.

Caltrans says work was also due to begin Monday to resurface Interstate 40 from Crucero Road to Kelbacker Road east of Barstow.

Las Vegas Paving Corp. has a $7.7 million contract for the work.

Work hours in both locations will be from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Caltrans says one lane will remain open at all times.

  150. mctruck July 20, 2011 12:39 pm

wouldn’t this be a good time for higgins to try to hook up with timmy chang?, or cannot do?

I figure if that was possible, it would advance his game skills tremendously, after all, they are both St. Louis grads.

  151. Pauoa Boy July 20, 2011 12:40 pm

Wow lau lau, lose money deez guys… All hype but no promise. Coach Gib taking academic casualties in DeShawn Mitchell and Ronnie Stevens… possibly Gerry Blakes and Dillon Biggs too, that’s 3/4’s of that recruiting class for basketball. Sad. Tate Forcier as much hype as this guy is getting for being a big time football player, sad cannot make the grades.

High School guys is half their fault and half the parents, counselors fault at their school. Most high school kids don’t know what it takes to academically qualify for a D1 college. Most think making good grades is it but little do they know certain classes are required such as Algebra 2, decent ACT or SAT score, etc… Parents and Counselors should be helping these athletes get the right classes and tutors, etc… Granted the kids themselves need to put in the work and make the grade but still some are left to fend for themselves and then what happens, they end up going the juco route and most times don’t make it back into D1 level. There is so much wasted talent out there due to athletes not qualifying. Shute over here at AWC alone I think we got 5-6 All State football players that should be at UH right now. Most kids don’t get the help or push to make it…so sad if you ask me!

Regardless, I never really care about the whole Tate Forcier situation, if he came good, if not, I wasn’t losing any sleep over it. I think we have quarterbacks on the roster who will develop into something great, just takes some game reps. Think about it when Coach Rolo played, did anyone think he was gonna put up ridiculous numbers right away??? Nope. Did anyone think Colt Brennan when he walked on was going to be a Heisman candidate??? Nope. Did anyone think Bryant Moniz was going to be a Heisman candidate??? Nope. So I not worried, we got come ballers at the position, and garrans Coach Rolo gonna unleash one of the boys waiting in the stable behind Moniz for next year. We just gonna keep on rolling!

  154. warriorsun July 20, 2011 12:42 pm

current roster of qb underclassmen (5)–graves, shutter, spain, nielson. higgins is listed but has not been assigned a number….justin alo, a grayshirt, expected to enroll in january (6).

mac wants two-more, that makes 8.

ok. after spring–which has no roster restrictions, mac will need to re-evaluate his qb scholies. imo, cory nielson is at-risk. he will have had three-years to make an impression and @ the 2012 mark will enter his 4th year. in year-4, a qb is no longer embellished with the word potential, unless you are a solid back-up. entering summer camp 2011, nielson is not on the top-4 on the depth chart.

    kevin spain.

warrior qbs may pass 50 times a game but haw qbs literally toss hundreds in a single practice, thousands in-a-hurry.

that is the test. jmo. dont count on spain for 2011 and 2012 is anybody’s guess or until he can rip-off thousands of tosses in a week without flinching. we havent discussed qb-IQ, accuracy or other qb-mean testing. spain gets his second mulligan this season–how many are rolo and mac willing to give kevin?

justin alo will be skating on his first year. unless he bombs–he remains.

the other two to-be-named–speculative at best.

we have had two big juco recruits that have paid high dividends in the past. rolo and colt.

but both needed a year to get their house in order, although colt finished strong as a starter in his first year.

unless, rolo is looking at another cam newton from blinn college, we cannot expect the talent bar to be raised above cayman or david…..that brings me to 6-2, jeremy higgins, he could be the sleeper?

  155. Couch potato July 20, 2011 12:49 pm

tate can still go the sjsu. i’m betting they are more willing to let him get his academics in order. UH grooms their qb’s and would love to have had tate on the practice field but since he no can concentrate in the classroom then aloha means goodbye, in tate’s case.

thank you al for the synopsis. majiro’s are good targets for bb gun practice.

Is this why the SEC has been “The football coonference” the past decade? By ignoring NCAA or conference “rules” so they can have many, many winning seasons and go to umpteen BCS bowl games and win national titles?

  167. Mario July 20, 2011 1:45 pm

The great thing I like about the quarterback position this year is Shane Austin. If something happens to Moniz this year, I really believe that Shane Austin can still win football games for us. Remember in 2007 when Colt got rocked, we still had Tyler Graunke to win games. We need that this year just in case. It is a long season and it will be crucial that our #2 starter can still be effective and win games for us. I really like Shane Austin’s confidence when he steps on the field and flings it all over the field. We need that in our #2 just in case we need to call on him.

  168. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 20, 2011 2:29 pm

    #165,

Miss St eh?…At least you never pick Vanderbilt. lol.

  169. Derek July 20, 2011 2:40 pm

Justin Vele hits like a Mack Truck. When he hits people, they are apt to fumble. On top of that he defends the pass well and has made a lot of interceptions from his LB position. He as great football instincts. He’s a stud.

Nothing wrong with JC players and I’m not only talking about QBs. The Juice, O.J. Simpson, went to San Francisco City College and transferrd to USC. Alex Green is also a fine example.

Tank Hopkins too. The bottom line is, if you can play on the DI level somebody will find you.

Of course, Cam Newton is the latest great story out of JC. And dont forget, Aaron Rodgers went to the same JC as Alex Green, Butte CC, before he went to Cal.

  170. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 2:42 pm

The courtship sounded one-sided because only the player’s side is allowed to make public comments.

But UH really, really was interested in Forcier. Here’s why:

    • UH is opening 2012 with road games at USC and BYU.

    • While the Warriors are high on Graves, he has not taken a meaningful snap in a game yet. They want an experienced player to challenge him. Higgins is an unknown. Spain hasn’t made enough throws. Alo, if he were to get admitted, would be a down-the-road guy.

    • UH really likes Forcier’s arm strength and technique.

    • UH is entering the MWC in 2012.

    • Somebody is signed only through 2012.

  171. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 2:44 pm

Vele appears to be very talented.

There are a lot of good pass-rushers on the d-line.

  172. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 20, 2011 2:49 pm

    #170,

Great reasons to have been pursuing someone like Forcier. Having played in the Big 10, I think the road games at USC and BYU would not affect him (screaming 70k-100k fans, hostility etc).

Some people on other forums are saying he is going to sign with SJSU but I think that’s impossible? If his academics can’t cut it here, how can it cut it at another Div 1 school?

I am pretty sure he goes to a CC and then makes it to a D1AA school in a year or whatever.

  173. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 20, 2011 2:50 pm

    ST,

Has a “source” at UHAD discussed Cody Green with you before? The guy seems to like teams who throw the ball all over.

  174. bigislandkurt July 20, 2011 2:53 pm

Vele and Leaf are two recruits that I’m very high on!

One thing I like about Higgins is that he is a LEFTY! That could be huge!

    BIK

  175. kalani July 20, 2011 2:54 pm

#116 I agree. Both Colt and Mo were 1 star or no star recruits coming out of high school and both ended up running this offense at a very high level. Shutter was a 3 star recruit and Graves a 2 star but Graves did not play QB as a junior or he would have been rated higher. Both of them have the potential to be as good or better than Mo or Colt and we got two of them in case one gets hurt. I think Mack did his homework in putting us in good shape after Mo graduates.

    SEC Media Days

I guess because I have only seen Will Muschamp screaming and yelling on the field that I am surprised he is actually a very articulate speaker.

Haven’t heard a single “um, uh, oh”

  177. BigWave96744 July 20, 2011 3:01 pm

Stephen, great write up this morning. Question, you mentioned Graves, Shutter, Spain, Higgins and even Alo who is not enrolled yet.. Why no mention of Corey Nielsen?

  178. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 20, 2011 3:04 pm

    #177,

I can’t say I know enough about Nielsen to say he is or isn’t a good prospect. I did hear some talk about him on 1420 but they weren’t giving him stellar reviews.

  179. roygbivs aka Terence July 20, 2011 3:06 pm

you win some, you lose some…. hope Tate all the best!! Can’t evaluate the talent unless they get into school, so really there’s nothing that we gain or lose.

I’m disappointed though at our basketball recruiting, seems like we Biggs and Blakes won’t be here…. that’s tough. Hopefully Coach can get to them in early in 8th or 9th grade and focus them to get in school here.

  180. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 3:07 pm

Nielsen’s a good guy and a hard worker. He just isn’t high enough on the depth chart, at the moment.

  181. Stephen Tsai July 20, 2011 3:09 pm

I have not heard Cody Green mentioned.

UH was in talks with a high-profile guy until recently. But it appears he won’t be able to enroll at UH this fall. That puts him on the open market, and bigger schools will be making a push for him.

  182. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 20, 2011 3:15 pm

    #181,

Interesting. Since we aren’t recruiting him anymore, maybe the coaches will leak the name. =)

How come he is unable to enroll in the fall at UH but other bigger schools can push for him?

Funny how the more things change, the more they stay the same. That song was about the turbulent political and social scene of the 60s, flash forward to summer 2011 and look at the mess in Washington.

Like the songs says, “Battle lines being drawn, nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong”…

  184. Calvin from Kona July 20, 2011 3:31 pm

OKay…time to get back in the mix. Looking forward to the season opener and confirmed for the UH-UNLV game in Vegas!

While we’re at it, here’s another oldie but newbie.

    “The Same Old Wine”

    By Loggins and Messina

Well we give them the election

They keep filling our heads full of lies

Can we trust in new directons

When their promises are in disquise

Well someday the truth will catch up

I just hope it don’t catch us all by surprise

    They preach this thing, religion

But we show no faith at all

    Follow suit on Sunday

But on Monday, forget it all

If the times should find us needing Him

Then my friends, Lord have mercy on our soul

    It’s the same old wine

    In a brand new bottle

    It’s the same old wine

    In a brand new bottle

    Teach our children virture

Then we send’em off to war

Then we ask ourselves the question

What and the hell are we fighting for

If you should find a reason

Well don’t be afraid to open the door

    Well don’t be afraid

    Same old wine

    From a brand new bottle

    Same old wine

    From a brand new bottle

    The same old wine

    From a brand new bottle

    ***

Pray for our country. Pray for the “leaders” of our country.

Sorry for going off topic. I’m off the soap box now.

  186. tommui July 20, 2011 3:39 pm

IWWTHM re #182. UH standards are higher than most schools in the WAC – need higher GPAs, test scores etc.

UH is regarded as one of the top 200 universities in the nation. It becomes a matter of prestige for the faculty – most of whom don’t give a rip about athletics. So if upper campus lowers its standards to allow people with lower scores, GPAs etc, the Academic types fear that the academic prestige we now have will drop.

It’s unfortunate as we lose out on many players we would want to recruit.

  187. Okole Maluna July 20, 2011 3:45 pm

With all these Dreaming of going into MWC with Tate would’ve been slam dunk coming up two years maybe even dream of another Sugar Bowl….

    Eh what the hell….

    Here’s a newbie, but still a newbie.

(enter bouncy reggae rhythm with FAT bass line as smooth as a stroll… GOOD reggae kine, no Steinlager double-fisting allowed.)

If I could just only ask of one more thing I’d want from you

Well it would go like this

Would you open up and accept me for the way I am to you,

    Get a clue

And if you tell me “boy I love you but you gotta change your ways”,

Well I would say any day

    My love’s afraid

That we have crashed and burned, there ain’t no sign of repair,

Girl, tell me this isn’t fair

Oh and still I wonder why

    We’re always buzzing by

    And each and every night

You know I come home to you

We’re at the same old situation

We’re at the same old loss of words

We’re at the same old situation,

    Here it goes once again

We’re at the same old situation

We’re at the same old loss of words

We’re at the same old situation,

    Here it goes

And there could be, girl I just want to walk with you hand in hand,

Back when I was your man

And you hold me, hold me like the world was promising and then

    Tell me this I pretend

And lift me up and you shot me down, you took me out the sky,

    And now I’m wondering why

Yeah I’m struggling on, how you got me singing like a sing along

Tell me I’m not aside, I’m out of mind

    And still I wonder why

    We’re always buzzing by

    And each and every night

You know I come home to you.

We’re at the same old situation

We’re at the same old loss of words

We’re at the same old situation,

    Here it goes once again

We’re at the same old situation

We’re at the same old loss of words

We’re at the same old situation,

    Here it goes once again

And I know, and you know

We would be broken but this is not the end

And we both know that it’s our last show

    Nowhere left to go.

We’re at the same old situation

We’re at the same old loss of words

We’re at the same old situation,

    Here it goes once again

We’re at the same old situation

We’re at the same old loss of words

We’re at the same old situation,

    Here it goes once again

    I don’t want anymore,

    It’s the same old situation

    No, I don’t want anymore

    No more.

Did you hear ST on ESPN1420 about 20-30 minutes ago? Apparently, he knows the identity of the two QBs joining us in January. He says one of them is well known or something to that effect. I’m thinking the JC recruit must be Alo. The well known one must be the high school player. Who could that be?

  217. madeinhawaii July 20, 2011 4:39 pm

aiyah.. Credence Clearwater Revival as in… “I see a bad moon rising.. “…? Before the football season?

  218. kawika49 July 20, 2011 4:45 pm

It came out as I was returning to the world.

  219. Curt July 20, 2011 4:47 pm

Could the celebrated one be the JC QB? I don’t think so as I believe Alo is an under-the-radar recruit. Unless ST was talking about another JC QB?

  220. Curt July 20, 2011 4:49 pm

When I hear “bad moon rising,” I think of the movie, American Werewolf in London.

  221. Curt July 20, 2011 4:51 pm

  222. Curt July 20, 2011 4:52 pm

  223. al July 20, 2011 4:56 pm

alo is a guy we recruited last year. he is a targeted greyshirt, however, he still needs to qualify.

he would be an interesting get if he gets through the wringer. his wr in hs is a soft usc commit and wanted to trip hawaii cuz his qb will be here.

  224. al July 20, 2011 4:56 pm

All of a sudden, it feels like the QB position at the University of Hawaii has jumped up a few notches on the national football meter. Even the brief mentions of Tate’s courtship on ESPN, yahoo sports, etc….priceless! Future recruiting is going to be interesting. Go Rolo!

There are about 5,000 new football players in FBS and FCS every year, coming in from high schools and junior colleges. That makes me more concerned about what the Hawaii coaches do to identify which of those 5,000 players they want to add to the Warrior football team each year, and keeps me from getting too excited when a Tate Forcier or Cody Green wants to transfer from their current school.

I agree, saving income on the net or in true lifestyle is an individual of the most important factors right now. With the way the financial system, job condition, fuel selling prices and housing market place are everybody is trying to help save a dollar right here and there. I think that how to preserve money and how to be a far better shopper must be a course taught in large school. So that young children can have an even opportunity and recognize what takes place to income when they have to shell out their personal expenses.

The basic Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was released to the UK today – Thursday – and best of luck with that too but can it compete in today’s market? By the time the variants that make it desirable for individuals (and I obviously don’t just mean memory here) become available won’t it have become a little old hat?
