UH lands JC receiver
Wide receiver Vasquez Haynes of Blinn College told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors.
Haynes is 6-2 and 205 pounds.
Haynes said he made the decision after consulting with his parents Monday night.
Haynes is a second-year freshman at Blinn, a school with UH ties. (Ryan Mouton and Jacob Patek are alumni.) Two good things for UH: 1) Haynes enrolls in January, meaning he can participate in spring training, and 2) He has three years to play three seasons.

Interesting we are bringing in 3 JC WRs. I like Haynes by far the most. Level of competition is higher and he has size and speed. Other recruits need to hit the weight room hard. Also like that he has 3 years. Been wanting to open that Blinn and Navarro JC connection again. Even Arizona Western would be nice.

My editor Paul Arnett was fighting to get me to go to the BCS championship game, saying I was the college football writer. But another editor argued that I was the “UH football writer.”
Anyway, they asked if I wanted to work the Hawaii Bowl I said, no, I’m the UH football writer.
“Ferd” did a great job at the Heisman.
Reardon will do a great job at the national championship game.
Jason Kaneshiro will do an excellent job with the Hawaii Bowl.
I’ll be Santa at the Christmas Eve party.
That makes 4 new WR commits (Haynes, Howard, Kemp, Polk) at last count…..but hearing that still others are being pursued…..including this week by Demo in the Sunshine State.
By NLI Day, wouldn’t be surprised to see the WR haul getting upwards of 6 or so new WRs.
With only Miah and Bright done afer this past season, interesting to see which current scholie WRs stay.

So the Catholic 7even basketball schools aren’t very happy with what the Big LEast is turning into/has become.
They have the super-majority to possibly do whatever they want to with the conference it seems including 1) Dissolve the league; 2) Retain all the assets; 3) Keeping the branding rights.
Big LEast is on shaky grounds at best. When oh when do other BCS conferences call for UConn and Cinncy? THAT would be fun to watch.

What I find interesting about the current recruiting results – low emphasis on offensive linemen. Chow getting receivers and linebackers. Looks like Chow will open up his offense next seasson.
Chow can get all the skilled personnel but what the team sorely lacks are people in the trenches. I hope he is just not going to rely on those starters that played this yr. on the offensive and defensive line as he needs bigger and more physical linemen to provide the blocking etc. for his skill people to do what they do best. Except for the Waianae defensive lineman recruited, I haven’t seen any commits for lineman which the coaching staff should be focusing on now and in the near future.

AWC been had a pipeline to UH. A majority of our local boys who don’t cut it go to A-Dub. They have been a top team for a couple years although they’ve lost the championship each time. They produce a lot of talent that transfer to big name schools. Look at Jesse Williams at Alabama and Dwain Williams at Oklahoma.

Yea, that was a bit frustrating to warch. I remember reading Fresno fan blogs about how Hill used to do so well running the ball in the first half then come out throwing in the 2nd and losing games. Lol. 2-3 TDs doesn’t seem like a big enough cushion to call off the dogs with the kind of numbers teams are putting up these days.

#56. iwonderwhytheyhateme… thank you for your post. Your support of David Graves is greatly appreciated. He is scheduled to graduate next May from UH. Months ago he declared his major and minor. He will be taking classes at UH this spring to fulfill his minor requirement. He wants to graduate from UH. He is a student-athlete (a 4.0 or near to a 4.0). If you know David, you know he is a success-oriented young man of strong character who doesn’t give up and quit. The next chapter of his life will be in Hawaii as he is staying.
Most of us were not raised on an island. For us to see the control the football department has over the media there is astonishing. The smear campaign against the players has been the most appalling. Norm Chow has not helped anyone. He simply decided that this year would be devoted to pushing out Mac’s recruits by any means necessary. A lot of talent never got in the game. Shame on Chow for taking a job that is clearly over his head and shame on the media for doing the bidding of the football department instead of good solid reporting. This stuff would never fly anywhere but a small dysfunctional island in the middle of nowhere…
Looking forward to see the O-Line commits. Hope the days of the 6’5″+ Chree hundred poundah guys are near. 🙂

#59. In defense of a beat reporter, you have to consider the fact that as such that person serves as a mouthpiece for the football department. His job is to tell fans and the public what the football dept. wants them to know. He is not supposed to report controversy or negative happenings. He definitely can’t question what the head coach has done. He would lose access and, thus, have no beat reporter job. Being a beat reporter is not easy; you have to toe the line all of the time and KNOW where the line is.
Bloggers such you and others have posted some of what has gone on this past year as far as the treatment of Mac’s recruits. While most of the posts appear on “that other blogging site”, a few have appeared here on the “good news blog”. The blog administrator certainly must have the ability to yank those posts, but has not, which tells me he can say, “They said it, I didn’t.”
Kudos to David Graves! Great athlete, of high character, intelligent, loyal and a WARRIOR!

Perhaps we can persuade the Richardson School of Law to bring him in to address these issues about “professional” collegiate football. Since 2009, Luchs has spoken at more than 100 universities – including their law schools – and even before legislative committees.
What I found very disturbing was how agents all across the country would identify top players as young as 12 or 13 and then establish a business relationship with their parents/guardians and their middle/high school coaches in exchange for eventually representing them when they get drafted.
DrDoc checked out the book at the Main Library after hearing Luchs being interviewed on both NPR and ESPN.

Excellent explanation re the landmines a beat reporter must traverse in order to get out the real story without offending the powers that be such that he would lose access to the sources he needs to cover.
This is why most do not fault Tsai for not calling a spade a spade.
Overall, especially recently, Tsai has done a good job of reporting the program and being objective, which is to say, if the topic on the blog or on the table looks like it might offend his news sources, he stays out of it.

By the way if you don’t think spin control is everywhere, you are naive. Very few statements should be accepted on blind faith, particularly when the statement serves only to justify the speaker’s behavior by putting someone else in a bad light. This is PARTICULARLY true when the other person cannot defend himself.
I don’t know what Chow knows. I’m not privy to the inner workings of things. Also, I’m not totally negative on this staff at all because I don’t have the facts to come to that decision for the most part. I generally don’t jump to conclusions based on assumptions. But when I think I do have all the pertinent info, like in the Will Gregory situation, I will state my piece. I still think — and will always think — that Chow mishandled that situation, but that’s nothing compared to the DG situation.
There HAD to be a better solution than denying DG the right even to suit up for games. Remember, DG was elected captain by the team. Same thing for GDL. How does that guy go from game #1 starter to not being allowed to dress for games? Maybe, DG and GDL don’t start and don’t even play much, but how do they become so disfavored that they can’t even dress for games?
And yet our backup kicker (nothing at all against our backup kicker by the way) goes on all the road trips and is even allowed to kick off in the UNLV game as a reward for his hard work. How come DG and GDL don’t deserve the same consideration?
And now the little birdies are tweeting that DG has difficulties learning the system, even as a receiver, and that’s why he didn’t see time at WR. A QB HAS to know the routes his receivers are running. Do you honestly believe that DG had difficulties in learning to run a post pattern? Seriously?

For most of us, I don’t seriously think we care who the HC is. We do, however, care a lot of about not getting blown out, about preventing blow outs, and about making sure we don’t have coaches who stand by and do nothing to stop the blow out. Then, we care about winning. No one follows the team wanting to see them lose.
The basic agreement among fans an this issue is this, we are saying – coach, if we are getting blown out, please, make some changes, experiment with other players, right now, during this game, to see if we can prevent the other guys from blowing us out, MOFO!
A coach who doesn’t do this during that game – make adjustments – does not inspire confidence in the fans and in the community about his ability to win games, which, despite what others have been saying about winning, is the reason the majority tune in to the game.

To these *ahem* “people”, deeper and deeper into the levels they go… NO “kick” will be strong enough to get them out of it.
So here they come… to level 3…
#69. Not talking through my hat. Journalism was my education and then my career before I retired (writer, columnist, editor, then magazine publisher). Others in the immediate family .. a newspaper beat reporter, then copy editor, then section editor (retired after 42 years with the same newspaper). Another family member was sports reporter, sports columnist, then Sports Editor for a major university. Our family also has acquaintances who were newspaper investigative reporters (now retired). They did not report everything they knew.
We are now old duffers so it is journalism of yesteryear, but I don’t think things have changed much as to the differences between being a beat reporter, an investigative reporter, or a feature columnist. The only change is the internet with its blogs where dialog can take place almost instantly.
Go read my post again. I gave you two examples of my opinions. The first referred to this blog as a function of the Star Advertiser whose beat reporter is the blog master. His job is to pass on “inside” information provided to him via his daily introductory piece and then his occasional posts. Where do you think he gets his “inside” information? He’s getting it from staff and observation. His job is not to report negatives about the head coach or any staff member. He may have observed negatives, he may have heard negatives, but he isn’t going to report them. He isn’t going to lead the parade nor jump on that bandwagon.
The second function is that of a public forum for UH football (and some other UH sports) where anyone and everyone can jump in and post whatever they want to post. News as well as views.

#81 during the south alabama game i told my niece and my sister that its pathetic when a team like south alabama travel to hawaii (without cheerleaders) and they have more players in uniform than hawaii. 105+ members on the team and less than 59 (i counted) suited up. for a home game.
#82 hurricane fred = painful memories? i moved to guam in oct 97 so i missed the worst part of UH football history. moved back home in oct 99 and got to witness the greatest turnaround in college football history.

The UH Athletic department’s PR and Marketing needs replacement and revamping…If they were doing a better job, you’d get better attendance and support. Heard Gib say that he hired a guy whose responsibilities include “theming” each home game: Beach Night, Geek Night, etc.

D1shima: You’re probably referring to the “video guy” that the BB team has…From what I’ve heard, the theming has helped in getting “students” involved and attending the games. Funny, but shouldn’t the UH marketing department be doing this? I think the Football team could help themselves with a dose of theming to get the students more involved. I think Gibb has done a good job in getting the BB team to be recognized as part of the student population versus just “jocks”.
d1: I don’t know but the play of the “6th Man” is improving…hehe
Maybe as a part of the BB home show have a student challenge a BB player to free throws. Keep a tally for the season. Student winners get prizes. Maybe shaming the players into doing a better job at the free throw line will get them to practice and concentrate more in the real games. That should get students to show up.

Well, there are duffers and there are old duffers. I wasn’t referencing golf. I am an old duffer, er Old Dame.
I remember when Bill Walsh got this young man out of western Pennsylvania to come to San Francisco to play football. Had a cowboy-like name of Joe Montana and the most gorgeous blue eyes. He didn’t live in S.F.; he lived not far from us in Redwood City close to the 49er practice field and headquarters. That was when he was starting out; after succe$$, he moved to Atherton about 2 miles from our house. We lived on the RC-Atherton border, not far from Stanford.
Back in the day, Bill Walsh was tinkering with and perfecting something called the West Coast Offense. Got to watch it evolve for over 20 years as a 49er season ticket holder.
For years the Niners practiced a mile from our house in Redwood City. Players and their wives shopped at neighborhood stores. A defensive Niner coach lived across the street from us until he moved to the Browns.
Our two boys started playing football when they were 8 years old for the Menlo-Atherton Lions. Had a head coach named Y.A. Tittle who had an assistant coach named Eddie Dove (from Stanford). There was another record setting ex-Stanford player who was another coach, but I can’t remember his name. Both boys played football all through high school; one played college ball, first as a walk-on, then as a starter on scholarship. The other did not play college football; he wrote about it — sports writer and then sports editor. You could say we are a football oriented family.
Where have the years gone? This Old Dame has been watching football from the stands for over 40 years. Now I watch it on TV.

The student section has been more consistent this season as in previous years.
Wahine volleyball… always a good draw, also had more consistent draws in the student section.

I’m confused.
Was Dejon Allan a non-qualifier out of high school? If so, how could he be a greyshirt? I think I read a few places that he was a greyshirt recruit. And if he was in fact a non-qualifier, wouldn’t he either 1) need to go JUCO and complete an AA before transferring or 2) attend a school that does not offer football and attain 24 transferable credits?

Dejon Allen was signed as a regular recruit. He did not meet all of the qualifications. So he became a grayshirt, meaning the Warriors will hold the scholarship until January. UH can actually hold the scholarship through next year, if he still doesn’t qualify. If he qualifies for the 2013 spring semester, he can count as a 2012 initial. If it takes longer, and he doesn’t enroll until the fall, then he can only count as a 2013 initial.
I spoke with Dejon Allen last night, so I’m fairly certain I’m up to date.

Last time I checked there is no rule that says everybody in the program must play, must get into the game.
If the coaches don’t grade them out as warranting playing time, shouldn’t it be “so be it”…?

Sometimes they are Grey Shirts when their SAT score is not high enough. So they gotta grey shirt until they can get the SAT score for UH. I know, been there, done that! And the score had to be 1280 and for public school kids that’s hard. So you just keep studying and taking the SATs until you get the score. And 1280 is not that high. My 12 year old was studying with the beast…and she took the test with him, and she scored 1460. And we were thrilled he got the 1285 to play for UH.
Hub just reminded me sometimes they don’t have enough HS credits. So a Grey Shirt might have to take an extra history or math class.

Didn’t intend to slight David in any way. While David doesn’t know me on this blog, David knows me in person….and knows that I’ve always been a supporter of his.
I wish that this information was erroneous and incorrect, but unfortunately it’s not inaccurate.
Got this first-hand from a personal contact with an FCS school…..who confirmed that Coach Chow initiated contact with this FCS program’s HC just last week….specifically to discuss David’s situation for next season.
Unfortunately, sounds as though David may not have been given the courtesy of being made aware of this by Coach Chow.

I once dreamt that I was coming home to find that there was a massive party at my house and Morris Day and the Time were performing in my garage. When I pulled up, the music stopped and the lead singer proclaimed to everyone as he pointed to me that I was the one that shot Tupac.
All of this stuff about vendettas against Mack’s recruits is a bunch of crap. Chow didn’t walk into the job with hate towards Mack or any of the players at that time. Chow wants to make big changes and that is never easy for anyone. He wants players that fit his system (physically, mentally) and who accept his philosophy. Its quite posible that players with better natural talents than others sat on the bench this year. Its also posible that Chow has lost his eye for talent. But I’m certain that he played the guys who he felt fit his system and philosophy whether they were his recruits or not. It is ridiculous to think that he consciously excluded players solely because they weren’t “his”. That would be counter to his objectives.
Maybe he rubs some guys the wrong way and they let it show. That might have ended up costing them playing time. Either they adjust, accept scout team duty, or move on. I’ve gone through the same thing. New coach came in and I didn’t like how he did things. I was young and knew everything and who was this guy telling me that everything I had learned from former coaches was wrong.
If you want to hear “how things should be”. Ask a college student. Life doesn’t always turn out the way you wanted it to. Yes, it sucks for guys who busted their butts for 3 years and were looking forward to playing on Saturday night. If that were my son, I’d be pissed and hurt for him but would tell him that this was one of life’s roadblocks that he needs to find a way of getting through. Maybe 2% of players will go on to the professional level. So, this isn’t ruining anyone’s livelihood. If anything, it is a safe time to get knocked down and learn a life lesson. At least they are getting a free education plus room and board. I’m sure many players ARE making the best of this situation and have become stronger and more capable people. DG sounds like an example of a player who is resilient and will use this experience to his advantage in the future.
I think the angry, hateful, and sometimes slanderous talk has more to do with emotion than logic.

There is ego involved too. The kind of ego that stems from some people that throw their hands up in the air when the chips are down about how they didn’t want a coaching change and how they felt things were A-OK and felt things were headed in the right direction.
Its always about ego. Discussing why the season went 3-9 is one thing and stating your ideas as to why we were struggling are fine, but when some people plug in the phrase “I for one, didn’t want a coaching change”… well.. there is a reason people say the things they say with different motives other than to offer their opinion.

As for what’s going on at UH these days, it depends on who you ask and when you ask it.
Same as most colleges, I would think.
All UH Student Athletes who are graduating this Saturday have been invited to the Letterwinners Clubhouse (with their families) to have some juice/coffee and some homemade corn bread prior to putting on the robes and taking pictures with the families.
Each student athlete is given a white stole with an embroidered H on each end to wear for graduation (courtesy of the Letterwinners Club).
Tsaikos, if you want to stop by and take your own pictures the time for this is 8:15 outside of the Letterwinners Building (lower campus).

Speaking of graduation… A BIG HAND to Rainbow Wahine Softball redshirt junior Jori Jasper for completing her degree in 3.5 years!
Back in 98 there was a freshman starting at center for UH. Local kid from Mid-Pac, good size, lots of potential. New coaching staff comes in, and this player never sees much playing time. Eventually he transferred to Southern Missouri State (I believe) along with another UH lineman. There was also a kid from Radford HS who played a lot in 98, but got cut in 99. I think his dad went to the media to complain about how he was treated by June Jones’ and his staff.
Point is that when you’re winning, people overlook a lot of “things” going on. When you’re coming off a losing season, everything is under a microscope.

I don’t know if Y.A. is still with us or not. He was an insurance agent in the Menlo Park-Atherton area back in the 1970s when he was a Pop Warner coach.
We were in Oakdale, CA, last month and drove past a Y.A. Tittle Insurance Agency on one of their main streets. We couldn’t believe it, we had to drive by it twice to make sure that is what the sign on the building and windows said. It got us to reminiscing about Y.A. when he was coaching Pop Warner in the ’70s — yowza, that was a long time ago.

Hey Bleed, thanks for the compliments. I agree 100% with your post. Generally speaking, I wouldn’t second guess any coach about who should or should not be playing. During the season, my only comments in that area were that Chow should have lifted SS in some of those blow out games — for SS’s sake as well as the team’s sake.
My point today is that I believe DG and GDL are quality people. I don’t know them personally, but they both come across very well. If they ARE good kids, I just wouldn’t want to see them tossed away like old trash. Seems like such a waste of human potential.
Even if they weren’t going to play this season and will be off scholarship next season, I don’t see the harm in letting them suit up. Now maybe they were given that option and chose not to accept it. I dunno. Gonna call ST now since he’s indicating that I am off. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been wrong.

Since I consider myself among the “others”….
Really it’s not about any particular current player….neither DG or GDL…nor about anger, hate, and/or ego.
BUT rather it’s ultimately about mutual trust and respect….between the players and the coaching staff.
It’s also about how players perceive their teammates are being treated…..either equally and fairly….or unequally and unfairly.
SO….NO problem IF this treatment is perceived as being equal and fair.
HOWEVER….IF this treatment is perceived as being unequal and unfair, then some players may empathize with their teammate(s)….especially for one who is a close friend….which can sometimes translate to how some players perceive a particular coach or coaches…..and influence whether they feel that they can respect and/or trust this particular coach…..in order to follow the leadership and “buy-in” to the program and instructions given…..and to motivate them….to perform to their potential on the field.
From this past season, perceptions by players inevitably differed…..unfortunately divided somewhat along the lines of whether the player was identified as a “Mack” player as opposed to being a “Chow” player…..which obviously lead to some divisions within the team locker room….and not the greatest team dynamic and chemistry…..translating to inconsistent results and less than steady improvements on the field.
What happened last season is done….BUT the point here is that….the mutual trust and respect both on and off the field between some players and some coaches must improve in order to translate to steady improvements on the field for the Warriors in coming seasons.

I mistakenly assumed that the Coach had extended the courtesy of informing the player beforehand…..since the FCS program’s HC was given all of DG’s information.
Since I can’t put the genie back in the bottle…..I can only confirm the truth.
Wow lots of anger on this blog today. Some people support the new coach, some don’t. I go by what happened in games. On all the high revenue games the game was lost by the end of the first quarter. And that was the fault of who not to mention injuries some that will affect the players for the rest of their lives.
The old adage of you play like the way you practice showed.

What really matters is…..how the players perceive things.
Mahalo for your responses on Dejon. Yet I’m still a little confused. If he did not meet all of the qualifications, wouldn’t he be a “non-qualifier”? I’ve also heard of the term partial qualifier, but don’t know exactly what that entails. Maybe being a partial qualifier allows for Dejon to bring up his SAT scores without having to go JUCO route.

diogenes…came across a great burger at the “shakes n buns” eatery. just like you like um. fat, juicy, top grade beef, fresh baked bun, all the trimmings. kind of pricey two of those house specialties, hot ranch spiced chicken dip with brie fresh tortilla chips to go along with a couple of fat tires and wine.
kind of pricey at just under 100 bucks. less the beverages, no more expensive than a teddy’s. that was the late evening meal.
and next time when in las vegas make sure you stop by the wicked spoon. a full on buffet that one could spend a week just to taste all the goodness. again a bit pricey at 40 pp. but, well worth it.
By the way I was NOT invited to ST’s wedding even though I was there in the class where the first furtive glances and high pitched giggles were exchanged. In other words the class where ST and Wena wen’ first hook up.

Every time I see that video I wanna cry. What’s there is great, but they edited out Blackmore’s guitar solo to shorten time for the tv broadcast. The deleted material was just deleted, gone forever. It’s only one of the iconic rock songs of all time. So little footage exists of that era.

He also showed no fear in going over the middle as did Rivers. Also his outside catches were very good he looks like he has good hands as did Rivers. They are both similar yet different.
