UH lands DE/LB from American Samoa

David Katina, a defensive end/linebacker from American Samoa, said he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. Katina is 6 feet 2 and 220 pounds. His father is David Katina Sr., a pastor and musician, and his siblings are the musical group the Katina Brothers, based in Tennessee. His high school coach likens Katina to Fetaiagogo Fonoti.

So, we now know Central Arkansas requested playing on a Friday because it wanted a really, really long time to prepare for its conference opener in two weeks.
Really, that “it takes a week to recover from Hawaii trip” theory is so untrue.

    TGIF!!! LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

I found this site which lists broadcasts for all sport. Click on 2009 Football, and look for the UH games. For example, it lists tonight’s game on Oceanic Time-Warner and Oceanic Streaming. Click on the link and you can register to watch streaming video. You can order 1 hour before the game. Price is $12.56.

Still in shock over that Oregon/Boise game last night. What an ending with “the punch”.

  41. 808ike September 4, 2009 7:13 am

    LizK,

Your list is great except “go to work.”

    Brew808,

If attendance is not possible, then showing one’s UH spirit and
support is important which you have.

  42. curveball September 4, 2009 7:18 am

    808ike:
    Oh, she will be there………

  43. Don Weir September 4, 2009 7:25 am

Look for local recruits in the diamond head/makai lower seats tonight. They will probably be on the field prior to the game.

Tsaiko’s who donated to the bike fund. I’d like to personally say mahalo to you at game so if you see a tall haole guy with gray/white hair and a Na Koa Shirt on walking in the parking lot or in the stadium walkways, or up and down in the stands please stop me and ask ‘how’s the bike’?

December 2, 2009 Centennial Dinner news is coming soon.

  44. Maynard G, Krebs September 4, 2009 7:29 am

BHF2 – but there is a radio program on KHPR featured Clink and Clack -“Car Talk”

  47. COLT WATCH:
    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2009/09/chase_and_colt_on_colt_and_cha.html

Who else weighed in? Well, Jason Campbell, for one, was conflicted by this whole drama.

“[Daniel] got a chance to get out there against their starting unit, and a lot of times he didn’t have much of an opportunity, they was in his lap,” Campbell said. “Those guys have the opportunity to go out there against the starters, create good film, and they’ve got to take advantage of it, but a lot of time he didn’t have any chances. It’s a tough decision. I like both of them. I like the way both of them put in a lot of work and everything they do. I enjoy being around them. It’ll be a tough decision, most definitely, but I think both of them, no matter what, I think both of them will be successful.”

  48. Ronnie September 4, 2009 8:03 am

    IT’S GAMEDAY!!!!!!!!

    YEE HAW!!!!!!

I’ll have to take a nap when I get home to make sure I can stay up for the whole game. 😉

  49. βρεω808 September 4, 2009 8:14 am

    Aloha Don Weir

You should head over to Richardson Field and meet the most of the Tsaikos there. You’re also most welcome to join in w/ the T-gate! 😀

    G O ★ ★ W A R R I O R S !!!

  52. βρεω808 September 4, 2009 8:20 am

Eh Ronnie – Wazzu matter? How come you canceled out on Wazzu? Wazzu wrong? 😐

  53. Ronnie September 4, 2009 8:22 am

    NEVER!

I am really bummed that I won’t be there in Seattle, but at least there’s Vegas.

  54. βρεω808 September 4, 2009 8:26 am

How about Reno for Halloween? We’d have to plan pre-/post-game meal better…. I still chuckle thinking about that sleeping lady in the coffee shop. 😆

  55. mctruck September 4, 2009 8:27 am

    ST,

Any chance there’s going to be a post of the potential lineups for UH and Central Arkansas???

  56. mctruck September 4, 2009 8:31 am

Welcome Mr. Katina….looking for you to play OLB because of your speed.

  57. Ronnie September 4, 2009 8:36 am

I’m going to try to get to Reno (that woman really was quite entertaining!), but San Jose may be more affordable…

  58. jojo ® September 4, 2009 8:39 am

I would like to say that Friday games are good

  59. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 8:42 am

Can’t believe it’s finally game day!

I’ll be off-blog most of next week tending to a residence search in D.C., but hopefully the rest of the Wazzu game plans (if any) are finalized. I’ll try to check back in periodically.

  60. al September 4, 2009 8:56 am

jojo….and yet you still won’t be there.

  61. madeinhawaii September 4, 2009 8:57 am

I didn’t get to see the Boise game as I was on the road yesterday. I just have one question. Did Boise look beatable?

  62. SteveM September 4, 2009 8:57 am

    Good morning everyone!

    GAME DAY!

  63. al September 4, 2009 8:58 am

    in case you are interested…

k5 will be showing last night’s na wahine/st. louis billikens vball match at 1000.

  64. maui warrior September 4, 2009 9:01 am

    madeinhawaii:

Its hard to tell until we see our team play, but i think anything is possible in aloha stadium…………they’re offense and special teams weren’t as sharp as expected but their defense looked pretty stout, although it is hard to judge since it was in boise and oregon has a completely different offense……..i think we have a shot

  65. labrat September 4, 2009 9:02 am

Okay time to get ready for football.

  66. madeinhawaii September 4, 2009 9:16 am

    maui warrior,

I figure if we can keep Boise under 21 points we have a shot. So how well the Warriors do on defense tonight and in the games leading up to that match up will be pretty critical.

  67. BIGWAVE96744 September 4, 2009 9:17 am

    Stephen is John Estes starting?
Gotta keep that streak of games started (41) going. Also everyone should help promote John as an All American Candidate where ever you can..

  69. 808Chef September 4, 2009 9:19 am

    Oh yeah baby…GAME DAY!

If I see anyone here who’s physically on Oahu while the game fesitivities is going on, I going be very disappointed!!

  70. SteveM September 4, 2009 9:21 am

Peaches and I will not be at the tailgate or the game 🙁

But Long Time UH Fan has my tickets and I hope he’s good to go today. Short story: mom is coming back from Vegas after 5 days with Cupertino brother and her HA return flight ETA is 9:05 PM (bro’s free ticket arrangement but non-stop flight because mom can’t make connections alone anymore–she just has to wait 5 hours at HA terminal before flight). We are going to pick her up and settle her in at home. Peaches works to 5:30 PM anyway and can’t get off due to vacations.

,,,ahhh, Al, I got a pot of left-over rice that will go real good with Mexican adobe roast pork and you know I live between you and the stadium… 🙄

  71. A-House September 4, 2009 9:23 am

I thought Tennessee also offered David, but don’t matter as he is Hawaii bound.

Welcome, David Katina, to the Warrior Family!!!

  72. J-Force September 4, 2009 9:36 am

    IT”S GAMEDAY BABY!!!!
    DEFFENSE!!!!! OFFENSE!!!!!
    LET’S GET IT ON!!!!
    GO COACH MAC!!
    GO WARRIORS!!

  73. Garret September 4, 2009 9:37 am

So, because of poor planning with the parking passes, 400 people are upset about finding out at the last minute that they aren’t going to get parking passes this season. They are being refunded $600 each, so that means that UH is losing out on $240,000! That is a *lot* of money that will be missing from the Athletic Department budget…I hope that this type of error never happens again.

  74. madeinhawaii September 4, 2009 9:41 am

Offering parking passes was a good deal… not anticipating the demand better, not so good.

Might have been better to over estimate the demand and then auction out what was left in the fund raisers just before the start of the season.

  75. da princess' classmate September 4, 2009 9:41 am

i think i’ll be seeing the cougars in the sheraton next weekend. i wonder where our boyz will be staying…

Well, I know get at least one of ’em who can get knocked Hout!

    heheheh

  77. al September 4, 2009 9:45 am

stevem…..just plan on coming down to the tailgate for a few minutes. bring your rice and a bowl. actually it goes well with some tortillas.

  78. addahknowjoe September 4, 2009 9:46 am

A Glorious Game Day Morning to all!!

  79. al September 4, 2009 9:48 am

that is why they play the game.

altho’ i am sure that this year bsu will be well prepared when they come into town. bsu is the new byu in my eyes. i hope the rest of the state feels the same.

  80. madeinhawaii September 4, 2009 9:49 am

    D1….

Hope Hout has learned … do NOT turn away from someone you just insulted…

  81. Ralph September 4, 2009 9:52 am

since there are no college televised games on ESPN today, blount of oregon is the news all day long.

  82. madeinhawaii September 4, 2009 9:54 am

    Ralph…

Everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame… just not always the way you’d want it.
Now if he’s smart, he’ll go humble and stick with the guys that jeer him and not hang with the guys that cheer him.

  83. al September 4, 2009 9:55 am

central arkansas is not just another weather vane school.
led by a God fearing coach who seems to do all the right things preparing his team for the gridiron and in the community.

we are definitely in for a battle.

lots of questions will be answered tonight for our warriors.
this will be a test of will and might.
the balance of the outcome will be determined by who has prepared the best.

this is a very significant game for us as it lays the ground work for the first 1/3 of our season. we can ill afford to go 1-3 like last year. the next 2/3 is the meat of our schedule.

all you lurkers, be there at the game, show up.
    go warriors!

  84. d1島 September 4, 2009 9:55 am

When I made a smart ass unsportsmanlike remark after a game, I was kicked off the B basketball team in HS. I learned my lesson, but became the first yell leader at Mater Dei HS and at University of San Diego. I had a big mouth and channelled it correctly. Hout had to learn the hard right cross way!

  94. Ralph September 4, 2009 10:12 am

ESPN reports that one of the college scouting service commented that Blount was a potential 2 or 3 round guy, now he is not on the draft board for his actions last night and previous issues. He has the rest of the season to show that he is a changed man, football wise he is a good rated rb.

  95. las vegas September 4, 2009 10:14 am

During a game in HS, my helmet got locked on to the opposing Mililani’s
tackles helmet, I thought he was holding me and I punched him in his facemask.

Got thrown out of the game and had to do a thousand yards of bear crawls.
    I learned my lesson

  96. Ralph September 4, 2009 10:18 am

last night’s wvb match, McLachlin mentioned that Kordes of St Louis match keys was to play the pins until na wahine middle can show that they are part of the offense. Kaufmann hits mostly slides, Hewitt got a few reps but a lot more than Nickie Thomas got last year in the middle at this point in the season. Shoji mentioned that setting to the left is the way it is for them if the OH is good, in Houston’s case and now Danielson. He said that is where most of the sets will go. That’s why I think we haven’t been a final four contender, one or two OH only can’t carry us. We had the OHs and the setter before, no title with no middles.

  97. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 10:18 am

Going to Kaahumanu Mall to watch the game with the kid. Consolidated Theater has the game for $10 on a 25 foot screen. No darkside, no Tiffany’s, no whitey! 🙂

  102. Ralph September 4, 2009 10:32 am

Blount is 6’2 240 junior college transfer, a senior this season, who rushed for 1000+ yards and 17 tds for the ducks. he might have flushed down a lot of money down the tube with that punch.

  103. al September 4, 2009 10:39 am

ralphie….perhaps al davis will grab him.

  104. Ralph September 4, 2009 10:43 am

ESPN reports the AP wire service has Oregon suspending Blount for the remainder of the season

  105. Rob25 September 4, 2009 10:44 am

Al we need some tough mothers, but we already have 3 rbs, none of whom get any carries. not counting last night, the 3 prior games the starters carried a total of 8 times. Oakland must be working on the passing game or cable and his OC lost it.

  108. Ralph September 4, 2009 10:48 am

so is the pork butt roasted and ready for the adobo sauce or did you marinade the butt all night. too bad we weren’t playing the razorbacks, the porkie would have tasted twice as good.

    hout not getting suspended.

  111. labrat September 4, 2009 10:49 am

I was thinking since members of both teams were wrong and had the incident happen during the game they both would have been penalized. The NCAA should make a rule that these kinds of infractions will carry over to the next game. Both teams should start off the next game with a 15 yard penalty.

ralph….still in the oven. takes about four hours…slow cooking.
marinate has many ingredients that were chopped, minced, and diced last night. the actual seasoning of the butt is just before roasting with continued bastings.

    good for him.

  117. Howulikedemapples? September 4, 2009 10:55 am

it all hinges on colt’s hammy.
if he is to be out for 3 weeks or so. then he’ll go to injured reserve and daniels will be brought up to the 53 roster.

when colt heals. then a huge decision looms for the redskins.

perhaps a trade or something. dollar wise the redskins would save a few bucks on salary keeping daniels.

in either case, colt’s injury is most untimely for him. a team needing a 3 stringer would want someone who can step in now and not later. a hammy is one of those nagging injuries that could take months.

  129. βρεω808 September 4, 2009 11:24 am

    Al,

They changed the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the NFL, so when a player goes on injured reserve that player is done for the *season*. No other team would be allowed to get Colt for this season–he would be done playing for the year.

  136. Garret September 4, 2009 11:47 am

    AWP,

Thank you for that update. Really sad news, especially since it may be too late for another team to pick them up. Hopefully Dowling will be put on the practice squad.

  137. Garret September 4, 2009 11:49 am

Washington could try to cut Colt and sneak him onto their practice squad. Any team could grab Colt, but they would have to keep him on their 53-man roster all season or give him back to Washington. If Colt is too hurt to play to start the season, NFL teams might not want to use a spot on their 53-man roster for him.

  138. hapahaoleboy September 4, 2009 11:50 am

Looks like Aaron Francisco was released from the Cards as well…that’s a bit of a surprise…

  139. Garret September 4, 2009 11:51 am

Nice summary of the rule change in the NFL.

Prior to that, the injured reserve rule distinguished between a player going on the list before the final roster was set (in pre-season) and after that. A player going on injured reserve in pre-season was, like now, lost for the season but a player going on the list during the season only had to sit out for a minimum of four games.

Apparantly, the NFL owners pushed for this rule change in an effort to police themselves. I’ve read that some, unnamed, owners (the NFL owners’ meetings are private) felt that some teams were illegally using the injured reserve list to stash players who weren’t really injured to circumvent the rules on roster limits (to gain a competitive advantage).

  140. Garret September 4, 2009 11:52 am

I’m glad that the coaches are going to have Fonoti sit out this game. He has a huge pain tolerance and his injury problems forced him to sit out of practice even before this injury, so I’d rather he let his body heal than risk being hampered by injury all year.

  141. Garret September 4, 2009 12:22 pm

Washington State’s players have been coming down with the flu–not surprising when so many of their students have been infected also. Some of their players might need to miss this week’s game and they may not be at full strength next week.

The flu bug has found its way to the Washington State campus, and football players are not immune.

Coach Paul Wulff said 13 Cougars have come down with the flu in the past nine days, and starting receiver Kevin Norrell is so ill that me could miss Saturday’s season opener at Martin Stadium.

  142. Garret September 4, 2009 12:23 pm

Washington State also has problems with depth and injuries have cost them their #1 MLB and a top backup safety.

Bland (knee) and Hoffman-Ellis (ankle) have been dealing with injuries this fall. True freshman Darren Markle played middle linebacker with the No. 1 defense for part of fall camp, but Wulff said the Cougars now hope to redshirt him.

Wulff said sophomore Tyree Toomer, a top reserve safety, required surgery for a torn pectoral muscle and will redshirt.

  143. madeinhawaii September 4, 2009 12:33 pm

Unless the Redskins plan on keeping Jason , they really have no one else to turn to next season, except Colt. Daniels can’t be expected to master their system in one year.

I hope that UH gets a LOT of sacks this season…not only will it be great for wins, it will raise money too.

Every time the Warriors’ defense records a sack on an opposing quarterback, McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii will contribute $500 to the UH Athletics Department as part of this year’s Super Sack Big Mac promotion.

Last year’s promotion was a huge success, with $18,000 raised for UH Athletics, the fruit of 36 defensive sacks.

Fans will also benefit from the promotion on Super Sack Big Mac Mondays. Every Monday after a UH Warriors game, regardless of the outcome, customers can purchase the Super Sack Big Mac Meal – a Big Mac Extra Value Meal with a second Big Mac added free.

Ha ha. Or just a simple “Shut Yo’ Hout” shirt might do.

As for the Redskins handling of Colt, two years in a system then you start rumbling about replacing the guy? Classic example of a two bit clown cart franchise. Parcells always had a three year window with the third year being the “show me what you got” time to prove it or move it.

I hope he ends up with another team. Colt deserves better. And hanging around that Cooley guy is not doing him any good. Bad influence.

  155. expat September 4, 2009 1:12 pm

I thought Boise looked pretty bad offensively last night. Their defense was very effective but it was hard to tell how much of it was due to Oregon just not firing.

The thing that surprised me most were the number of Boise miscues– fumbled snaps, missed field goals, fumbles, wasted red zone visits, etc.

This Boise team has talent, but they really struggled with execution which is something surprising as I think execution has been their strongpoint these last few years. They have never had the fastest or strongest players, but they have always just executed.

The way their defense held Oregon to five three-and-outs to start the game and with the time of possession difference they should have absolutely destroyed Oregon– and yet, the ducks were in it until the last few minutes and were within striking distance. That has to worry Chris Peterson.

About Hout, the guy should not have been mouthing off, but Blount had provided a locker room board quotation and to say that his play could not back up his mouth would be an understatement. Pretty hard to knock Hout for reminding him of it. Hout only got decked though because Peterson was immediately in his face chewing him out– and that is when he got sucker punched. Even after that Peterson pushed Hout back and kept in on him. You have to be impressed with that. In previous years that would have been a full on mee-lee if it had been our impetuous guys.

Hout may not be getting any official sanction but you better believe he will be running or crawling this week more than his peers.

I have said this before, but one thing the Athletic Department should do is ensure that all the winter athletes have flu vaccinations every year. As soon as the H1N1 vaccine is available they should be getting that as well.

  156. bb September 4, 2009 1:22 pm

In the aftermath of last nights sucker punch incident, I would imagine that all across the country today–coaches are reminding their players of how such an ill advised action brings shame to the individual, team, school and community. And one step further I also think fathers are giving their sons (and maybe even their daughters) the same kind of lecture, especially how such bad behavior would bring shame to one’s family.

And furthermore, it also wouldn’t surprise me if Sunday parishioners hear from the leaders of their Church referring to last night’s sucker punch incident that it’s also bests not to perpetuate an incident to begin in the first place, like how the one players cockiness and taunting resulted in the incident to escalate.

This is unfortunate to happen. For both teams. And for both young men.

In the end…football does teach many life’s lessons.

    Maui warrior- you flying over?

ES had a really cool X and O post from kshakak about how Colt fulfilled what Coach Zorn designed for him to execute yesterday. I’ll try to copy it.

    Plane is late.
    I am hungry.

  180. LizKauai (iPhone) September 4, 2009 2:36 pm

Colt ran Zorn’s offense Zorn’s way:
    (1) his progressions and footwork were in rhythm
    (2) he kept the ball high on the drop back
    (3) the third stab step and hitch were not present in his footwork
    (4) he made great post snap reads, shuffled through reads twice on even three step drops, and fine-tuned ball spin on passes in the flat.
    (5) didn’t force the issue with hybrid coverages (ie, 2 flat defenders in zone) in intermediate and underneath stuff.

on a side note, for those of you Bill Walsh/WCO gurus, take a look at the script for the play calls on Colt’s drives. Zorn inherited more than Holgrem’s (version of Walsh’s) press press kit. this was a good test for Colt, he passed.

  196. Bulla September 4, 2009 4:39 pm

    aloha and mahalo,

i have to wait until one hour before the game to order online for the internet…game time will be at 11 pm Wyoming time….so i’ll crash for now so i can cheer later.

mahalo for all the good wishes for ‘the beast’ and company. you’re right, this is like kawaihae, but so barren so open country. had a chance to buy a ‘cord’ of wood at the ‘loaf and jug’ store, local version of a 7-11 i think, but didn’t.

miss you guys, great news on Katina from Samoa. his dad is annointed, we sat together at a Conference at Word of Life as guests of Pastor Art and Pastor Kuna. it was fun sitting with Jesse Duplantis for 1 1/2 hours, talking story and casting visions together….

must be the red bull…….still cranking on this keyboard, haha.

  197. Bulla September 4, 2009 4:42 pm

    by the way,

snowflake is ready to ‘buck up’ some cowboys on the field…..mahalo for the support for ‘snowflake’ and the other wildcats

  198. Bulla September 4, 2009 4:49 pm

    hey maverick

mahalo for the kind word, laramie is nice, just hard for this city boy you know….man, without anything to do, this football program should be kicking butt. the training facilities are awesome, and since there is nothing else going on in this town….should be packed tomorrow at the stadium…let’s just have a good game and no injuries!!!

  199. pants pooper September 4, 2009 4:52 pm

I LOVE MY ALOHA STADIUM PARKING PASS!!!

Your right, tough country surrounding you, and the tumblweeds blow hard in the wind, rolling over anything that gets in the way.

Hope to catch the game on BigSky tomorrow.

Lets get the Paniolo Cup back in force between UH & Wyo.

Awesome program that can use a shot in the are from the WAC and BIG SKY.

  202. Maverick September 4, 2009 5:12 pm

If only I can remember the name of that drinking establishment in Laramie that has my old saddle hanging behind the bar…..mention my name for a free round of suds…:>

  203. Seattlezz September 4, 2009 5:21 pm

channel surfing and just stumbled across Canadian station TSN right now showing CFL Friday Night Football, Montreal at BC Lions, and…dang, right then I saw Ryan Grice-Mullen on the field for one play, and that was it…first quarter just ended, 0-0. (This is Comcast ch. 15 if you’re in Seattle). BC Lions website also tracking the game live and so far RGM’s numbers are 1 punt return 4 yds, but no catches yet…….wait, just switched from the Mariners game and Montreal just scored and RGM has just returned a kickoff about15-20 yards…

  204. FloridaTed September 4, 2009 5:28 pm

I’m pacing around my apartment, waiting for kick-off.

It’s exciting to see the new Warrior version unveiled. My feeling is that this team will give us a lot to cheer about over the next few years, hopefully, even give the donks a run for their money.

  205. Bulla September 4, 2009 5:41 pm

    maverick

Bulla – Best of luck to “da beast” and his family tomorrow. It’s a huge sacrifice to take off work, travel, and support the fine young men.

Are we gonna see you in Vegas?

  212. Ronnie September 4, 2009 6:13 pm

Ok, I’m hooked up for the game. Am I the only one who sees only a screen that says I’m authorized to view the game? Last year we got to see the RK pre-game show…

  213. Bulla September 4, 2009 6:18 pm

    howzit rich

hope all is well and you’re safe from all those fires…whew. mahalo for the kind words, but we have a blast when we travel. our vacations are working vacations, we have our wi-fi, the phones, the blue tooth, the lap tops……we may be away physically, but we’re always ‘hooked up’, haha. the real joy, is like today…..after the walk throughs at the stadium, the team cleaned up and headed back to the hotel…..well, all the 808 boys know that when uncle bulla and anty lyn show up, we bring gifts…….i should take a photo of some of their team mates sampling the cuttlefish we bring…..talk about sour, haha.

some of these kids never left hawaii, until now, so they are growing up real quick. we’ll be back down in ogden on sunday afternoon, i’ll be cooking some BIG pots of stew, shoyu chicken, chili and spam musubis……so the kanakas are all ready for some ‘home style’ grindz

we’ll check on the Vegas game, we’d love to be with all the Tsaikos again….

  214. Bulla September 4, 2009 6:19 pm

    howzit ronnie,

the reason you can’t see the pre game with RK, he won’t fit on your screen…..that’s what somebody told me…bwaaaahahhhahahahahah

  215. G (China) September 4, 2009 6:21 pm

    Thanks Bulla.

  216. Rich2176 September 4, 2009 6:23 pm

Bulla – man, you makin’ me hungry. Geez…shame shame…We’ll have two tix for you if you and the Mrs. can make it.

Ronnie – I’m authorized also….to hoist green bottles. Nah, I have the same message.

  217. postmanke September 4, 2009 6:32 pm

  218. NYUH September 4, 2009 6:42 pm

  220. postmanke September 4, 2009 6:45 pm

If Mac actually manages to lose this game…my god

  236. TChahng [서울] September 4, 2009 7:07 pm

Good strong start for Central Arkansas. If Hawaii doesn’t fix the pass blocking it will be a long night for the Warriors.

  237. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 7:10 pm

    Auryte LWJ

  238. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 7:14 pm

  242. postmanke September 4, 2009 7:19 pm

how about the Noke Poke on O?

  243. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 7:20 pm

    Safety.

  244. conor September 4, 2009 7:21 pm

Thoughts so far on the D: D-Line, secondary and lb’s look great! The pass rush does however need some work

  245. UHfan808 September 4, 2009 7:27 pm

That’s THE WAY guys! Keep it up!

  246. conor September 4, 2009 7:29 pm

Mac you can only use the shovel pass so many times, c’mon brotha!

  247. postmanke September 4, 2009 7:30 pm

#246 that would be on Ron Lee.. Yep fire Ron Lee

  248. TChahng [서울] September 4, 2009 7:30 pm

    Sloppy.

  249. mctruck September 4, 2009 7:32 pm

time to change the qb. Alexander…you killing us.

  250. PONO September 4, 2009 7:34 pm

Special teams seems much improved. Wow only half a quarter and people are calling for Lee and Alexanders head.

  251. postmanke September 4, 2009 7:34 pm

if we’re quick and deliberate this team cant stop us.. bad bad playing calling so far

  252. PONO September 4, 2009 7:35 pm

    Trouble if they can’t block a 1-AA D line

  253. postmanke September 4, 2009 7:35 pm

I been calling for Ron Lee’s head since the 3rd game last year!

  254. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 7:36 pm

    DEFENSE!!!

  255. conor September 4, 2009 7:36 pm

We’re making Central Arkansas look like Alabama…time to switch up the QB’s Alexander is rattled, and the shovel pass is being wayyyyyy overused

  256. PONO September 4, 2009 7:37 pm

Leahey’s killing me again. He’s making up words

  257. NYUH September 4, 2009 7:37 pm

Nice feed into NYC. Wish I was seeing some better results but its OK, the guys will settle down.

  258. LizKauai (iPhone) September 4, 2009 7:38 pm

    Love our seats in blue.
    The game? Ehhhh.

  259. mctruck September 4, 2009 7:39 pm

put moniz the scrambler in there…..

  260. postmanke September 4, 2009 7:40 pm

would he dare put Rausch in??

  261. Hawaiiroller September 4, 2009 7:41 pm

You gotta give Alexander some time. He’s not getting the best blocking or pass patterns. Remember too that he’s not calling the plays.

You can’t be changing your QB in the first quarter.

  262. koa mahu September 4, 2009 7:43 pm

I dunno who has slower brain synapses-wf2 or GA.

  263. mctruck September 4, 2009 7:43 pm

change up for just a couple plays so Alexander can view everything from the sidelines.

  264. conor September 4, 2009 7:45 pm

Hawaiiroller: The thing is, is whenever he has gotten time he has thrown any accurate passes and he’s throwing into triple coverages. Come to think of it, does he only have one completed pass? (besides the shovel passes)

  265. postmanke September 4, 2009 7:46 pm

I think GA hit his head pretty hard.. that will be the excuse for the change. I am sensing desperation.. clearly out of their offensive game plan. bad scouting bad play calling.

  266. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 7:47 pm

    C’mon D!

  267. Bulla September 4, 2009 7:48 pm

    Let’s go

  268. mctruck September 4, 2009 7:50 pm

BCS aspirations!?….Hawaii Bowl??…..just thinking to myself.

  269. conor September 4, 2009 7:51 pm

    wow

  270. kush September 4, 2009 7:51 pm

    upset. lose money.

  271. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 7:52 pm

The CA qb is good or are we making him look good?

  272. mctruck September 4, 2009 7:53 pm

I think the CA defense is rushing Alexander because they don’t think he can run very well…they did their home work.

  273. postmanke September 4, 2009 7:53 pm

Didn’t Scottie Pippen play for UCA?

  274. mctruck September 4, 2009 7:56 pm

    score somemore points, “D”.

  275. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 7:57 pm

    Green hits that pretty fast.

  276. conor September 4, 2009 7:59 pm

    Take Alexander out.

  277. UHfan808 September 4, 2009 8:02 pm

    talk about being emotional

  278. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 8:05 pm

    Auryte let’s go Warriors

  279. Hawaiiroller September 4, 2009 8:07 pm

    About time Ron Lee.

  280. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 8:07 pm

    C’mon smash it in!

  281. PONO September 4, 2009 8:07 pm

Ron Lee has no play calling ability. I don’t doubt that he knows the system and can teach it but play calling is an art.

  282. Hawaiiroller September 4, 2009 8:09 pm

Agreed Pono. We saw that last year.

  283. conor September 4, 2009 8:10 pm

this play calling is atrocious…how can you not punch the ball in when you have 1st and goal on the 3 against a mid-level D1AA opponent…

  284. Hawaiiroller September 4, 2009 8:11 pm

    TD!!!!

  285. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 8:11 pm

    Touchdown!!!!

  286. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 8:12 pm

    TD!

    Better late than never.

  287. conor September 4, 2009 8:12 pm

    yessssssssss!

  288. postmanke September 4, 2009 8:12 pm

#281 exactly! this system is way beyond his brain ability, too complex. so he simplifies it so he can manage his style of play calling..

  289. Garret September 4, 2009 8:15 pm

Out of bounds on a kickoff…bad.

  290. PONO September 4, 2009 8:15 pm

I think Rolovich might make a good play caller.

  291. kush September 4, 2009 8:16 pm

spencer smith looks like a beast!

  292. Hawaiiroller September 4, 2009 8:18 pm

    DEFENSE!!!

  293. conor September 4, 2009 8:24 pm

Mac’s gotta find a way to beat this team

  294. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:24 pm

    whew,
    gotta regroup

  295. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:26 pm

their DE #9 is a monster off the edge, and UH has not stopped him all night

  296. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:27 pm

what’s going on with our O line, the tackles? interesting with Kia, still can’t get the snap count down….Letuli too slow to keep that speedy DE off of GA

  297. XxFaithxX September 4, 2009 8:27 pm

    Half-Time report:

Mack and his staff are way out of their league. The blind leading the blind. They have no emotion, do not attempt to rally the players, and have this deer in the headlights look.

Alexander does not belong on the 1st team. Let Moniz or Austin or even one of the freshmen play.

LWJ looks good here and there, but I rather have green from what I have seen so far.

could add more, but later on. Sad sad game so far.

GO DEFENSE!!!! I guess as the offense really is stinking it up.

  298. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:27 pm

Green looks good, lots of potential

  299. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:28 pm

i think he’s better than LWJ

  300. postmanke September 4, 2009 8:28 pm

Wow, nothing new on offense? same play’s? nothing creative? seems like the coaching just wants to get by… keep cashing those checks until you cant mask it anymore.

  301. PONO September 4, 2009 8:33 pm

Warriors are not playing disciplined football. They are over pursuing and not staying in their gaps. If they stick to their assignments they should be OK. If they don’t pick it up in the second half and play inspired ball then we have problems. Show some heart boyz!!

  302. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 8:34 pm

    Second half lingers.

  303. conor September 4, 2009 8:34 pm

It almost seems like Alexander didn’t even work with his receivers this whole off-season…no one “gels”. The only offensive players who i’m impressed with so far is Salas and Green. Furthermore, if Coach Mac cannot get a win against Central Arkansas, his seat HAS to turn pretty hot all of a sudden. I know its only one game, but c’mon this is not supposed to happen, this is Central Arkansas were talking about here not Texas or USC. All of a sudden this program has gone on a decline ever since Jones left.

  304. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:34 pm

I thought we were going to see some new ‘twists’ on offense? the only twisting i see is coach mac on every turnover we have …. 3 in the first half alone.

  305. Shannon September 4, 2009 8:35 pm

Need to get the ball to the playmakers…period.

  306. Konaboy September 4, 2009 8:36 pm

If we do not go off on them in the second half, this is going to be a very long season!!!!!

  307. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:36 pm

salas looked good, pilares had a big gain……green looked like he can boogie, out of GA and into their hands

  308. Shannon September 4, 2009 8:36 pm

I hope this is not the kind of play we can expect to see all year… Hard to believe we were in a BCS Bowl 2 years ago………….

  309. Konaboy September 4, 2009 8:37 pm

    Conor: couldn’t agree more 🙁

  310. las vegas September 4, 2009 8:38 pm

said it before, say it again.
hard to win with 4 guards and a center playing on the O-line

  311. kush September 4, 2009 8:39 pm

the rainbow warrior marching band. ha!

  312. Shannon September 4, 2009 8:40 pm

Not trying to bash GA too hard but can anyone that watches the practice tell me if he’s really the best QB we have?

  313. postmanke September 4, 2009 8:41 pm

I agree with Conor as well except the “all of a sudden” it’s been a gradual decline from last year. good news is Junes recommendation for his replacement is still avail..

  314. kush September 4, 2009 8:41 pm

at least the streaming is a lot better.

  315. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:42 pm

    Las Vegas
you hit it, kind of hard with no foot speed on the edge….shoot, the DE is only 248 lbs at 6’1 and we can’t stop HIM? he’s in GA’s head already…….like the fact he wears #9, that’s cool

  316. postmanke September 4, 2009 8:42 pm

I dont think GA is a system QB

  317. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:43 pm

ok, i am the party pooper, bring back Graunke, haha

  318. postmanke September 4, 2009 8:43 pm

    yes streaming much improved!

  319. las vegas September 4, 2009 8:43 pm

camera man must be on drugs, moon is shaky

  320. Shannon September 4, 2009 8:43 pm

Good point LV…you would think that the coaches would recognize that and address that during practice or at the very least ADJUST playcalling…we’ll see in the last 30 min. of the game…

  321. postmanke September 4, 2009 8:44 pm

…you do the Noke Poke and you turn yourself around, TD is what about

  322. postmanke September 4, 2009 8:46 pm

we should paint our field black!

  323. las vegas September 4, 2009 8:46 pm

    Bulla,
yup, slo-mo tackles again this year.
if we gotta play slo guys, we should at least have slo guys with looong arms.
UNLV has speed off the edge this year!

  324. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 8:48 pm

Good stop to open the half!

  325. Garret September 4, 2009 8:51 pm

Greg Salas! Awesome today, just continuing his play from last year.

  326. gmahoney September 4, 2009 8:52 pm

    Let’s Go WARRIORS!

  327. Konaboy September 4, 2009 8:53 pm

    Salas still making plays!!

  328. Hawaiiroller September 4, 2009 8:53 pm

Now they look like a D1 school. Hope they can keep it going.

  329. Hawaiiroller September 4, 2009 8:56 pm

    TD!!! There ya go!

    Warrior!

  330. Konaboy September 4, 2009 8:56 pm

This red-zone possession is huge for alot of reasons. Greg’s down to thhe 4, I still like his scrambling abilitites… TD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  331. Cindy Cee September 4, 2009 8:56 pm

    Touchdown!!

  332. Garret September 4, 2009 8:56 pm

Pilares! Playmakers are Pilares and Salas…no surprise.

  333. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 8:56 pm

    Auryte GA and KP!

  334. Konaboy September 4, 2009 8:57 pm

2nd half is looking more normal so far 🙂

  335. Shannon September 4, 2009 8:57 pm

    Its about effing time!!!!!!!!!!!!

  336. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 8:57 pm

    TD!!!!!!!!!!

  337. Shannon September 4, 2009 8:58 pm

like I said…stop holding on to the ball and feed the skill players!

  338. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:58 pm

    TOUCHDOWN!!! GO WARRIORS

  339. Bulla September 4, 2009 8:59 pm

The offense is not designed for the QB to run the ball, flashbacks to Raphael Cherry days…….haha

  340. Konaboy September 4, 2009 8:59 pm

Kicking game looking decent so far

  341. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:00 pm

see what defense can do, 3 and out, get the offense back on the field

  342. PONO September 4, 2009 9:00 pm

Are people still calling for GA’s head after he went 5-5 on this past drive?

  343. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:01 pm

Bulla… true story, but if no time from the line den da legs gotta mek strong!!!

  344. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:03 pm

Pono if it wasn’t for Salas making a play on that long throw down the middle GA wouldn’t have looked so good, I’m still skeptical…….

  345. kush September 4, 2009 9:03 pm

can we get a turnover please.?

  346. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:04 pm

Stoked to see Blaze back in action, he is a beast.

  347. kush September 4, 2009 9:04 pm

good pressure by blaze suarez. lol@leahey.

  348. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:06 pm

    Let’s see Inoke

  349. PONO September 4, 2009 9:06 pm

Yeah either Leahey can’t read the roster or he’s making up any kine names he feels like.

  350. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:07 pm

Ok nice stop once again, but let’s be honest central A’s offense sucks. If we the butterflys’s are out of the warriors stomachs then they shouldn’t allow them to score again. Blitz’s need to get in the backfield faster….

  351. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:07 pm

If GA is the best we got, then GA is the best we got and we move forward with that….he should have thrown the ball instead of keeping, running right, losing 2 yards…..nothing big, something small, but that’s a detail he should be aware of. luckily, we got the TD eventually

  352. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:08 pm

    GA = Vick? LOL

  353. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:09 pm

Alex Green is quick for a 6′ 2″ guy

  354. kush September 4, 2009 9:09 pm

    GA ran over that db

  355. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:10 pm

Offense is starting to get that old rythym…

  356. PONO September 4, 2009 9:11 pm

    Green is a baller…

  357. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:11 pm

    ….or not 🙁 O-line needs some work

  358. G (China) September 4, 2009 9:13 pm

FG should give Enos some confidence

  359. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:13 pm

Well 2nd half is looking night and day, but… O-line looks iffy. GA looks to be finding his groove, I think we need to get used to him scrambling.

  360. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:14 pm

    Green is mean

  361. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:14 pm

    Nice special teams!

  362. kush September 4, 2009 9:15 pm

    Jake looks nuts!

  363. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:16 pm

    C’mon D turnover

  364. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:17 pm

    I love the D call on 3rd!

  365. Hawaiiroller September 4, 2009 9:18 pm

Smith is going to be a stud too.

  366. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:18 pm

    Spencer Smith what a HIT

  367. kush September 4, 2009 9:19 pm

i admit our boys can hit.

  368. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:22 pm

holding on the O line, oh boy

  369. PONO September 4, 2009 9:22 pm

I like Henry as a punt returned he is decisive in his decisions. Picks a seam and takes off up field.

  370. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:23 pm

back to the drawing board for mac and crew

  371. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:24 pm

Henry is tough, all positive yards every time, and sure handed, which is good!

  372. Garret September 4, 2009 9:25 pm

I agree, punt returns are *much* better this year as compared to last year. We should credit the blockers and scheme also as they are helping Henry.

  373. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:29 pm

CA moving the ball too easily on this drive, too easy

  374. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:32 pm

    Deja vu

  375. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 9:32 pm

    Katooosh!!

  376. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:32 pm

TOUCHDOWN….what a drive, whew, cmon defense

  377. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:34 pm

BIG KATOOSH, untouched from the side for #53, but UH still losing, gotta answer that score with one of our own now!!!! GO WARRIORS

  378. kush September 4, 2009 9:36 pm

    special teams look good.

  379. Shannon September 4, 2009 9:38 pm

We gotta score on this drive. NO EXCEPTIONS.

  380. BowsForever September 4, 2009 9:39 pm

I don’t know how else to say this. This game does not inspire confidence in our team.

  381. Shannon September 4, 2009 9:39 pm

let me specify: score a TD. FG won’t cut it…

  382. Shannon September 4, 2009 9:40 pm

    FUMBLE???????????? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  383. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:40 pm

    Defense

  384. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:41 pm

    Turnover :(:(:(

  385. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:41 pm

    DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE

  386. PONO September 4, 2009 9:43 pm

Time to step it up D.

  387. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:43 pm

    ball control by CA, scary

  388. G (China) September 4, 2009 9:44 pm

    we need a stop

  389. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:45 pm

the clock is not our friend at this point in time

  390. las vegas September 4, 2009 9:45 pm

    we look sloppy….sigh

  391. Shannon September 4, 2009 9:45 pm

if they get the 1st down here…we’re in trouble…

  392. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:46 pm

    Dramas. 🙂

  393. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:47 pm

    field position…..

  394. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:47 pm

    Lahey is lost

  395. Shannon September 4, 2009 9:47 pm

ok…defense did their job…. now the Offense’s turn! STOP TURNING THE DAMN BALL OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  396. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:48 pm

    Let’s go WARRIORS!!!!

  397. Shannon September 4, 2009 9:48 pm

Question: WHY THE HELL ARE WE HAVING A NAIL BITER WITH A FCS TEAM???

  398. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:49 pm

    shannon,

i hear you….and not even a top 10 FCS team…..long year for warriors

  399. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:50 pm

    Guess who………. S-A-L-A-S!!!!!

  400. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:50 pm

    kona boy,

papa leahey needs a gps to find his train of thought, talking about the play clock vs. the game clock….whew, boy,…….time for some meds, haha

  401. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:51 pm

    Punch it in

  402. las vegas September 4, 2009 9:52 pm

Salas is the man this year, nice touch by GA

  403. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:52 pm

    good job by salas

  404. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:52 pm

    what a catch and run……

  405. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 9:53 pm

    First game jitters, I suppose.

It’s not gonna look pretty if the miscues and O-Line woes persist in the coming games against Washington State and UNLV.

  406. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:54 pm

    That play was horrific!!!!!!!!!!!!

  407. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:54 pm

hold onto the ball…….don’t turn it over…

  408. Shannon September 4, 2009 9:54 pm

    gotta score…..

  409. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:55 pm

    LOL Bulla….

  410. Shannon September 4, 2009 9:55 pm

    …………but whatever you do, GA… DON’T-TURN-IT-OVER!!!!!!!!

  411. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:55 pm

    wow
throwing the ball, with the night we’ve had, that is a BIG risk

  412. Cindy Cee September 4, 2009 9:56 pm

    touchdown again!

  413. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:56 pm

1:28 in the game, 2 seconds on the play clock…and we burn a Time Out?

  414. Garret September 4, 2009 9:56 pm

Bradley! I was expecting Salas or Pilares…and I’m guessing UCA was too.

  415. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 9:57 pm

Right on da money. What a pass!

  416. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:57 pm

Ok stoked on the TD, but the clock management sucked!!! And why aren’t we going for 2?????????????

  417. las vegas September 4, 2009 9:57 pm

UNLV has moved last years stud lb to the rush end.
Both DE’s can run all day and the DT’s are hugh!

  418. kush September 4, 2009 9:57 pm

    nice catch by rodney bradley.

  419. G (China) September 4, 2009 9:57 pm

    whew…wipe sweat off brow

  420. las vegas September 4, 2009 9:58 pm

GA sweet touch, what took you so long?

  421. kush September 4, 2009 9:58 pm

yah the clock management did suck. haha.

  422. Konaboy September 4, 2009 9:58 pm

    OK D….

  423. Bulla September 4, 2009 9:59 pm

    TOUCHDOWN…AURYTE, END OF SUSPENSE

  424. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:00 pm

    uh oh……………….

  425. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:00 pm

line up front needs to get a push…

  426. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:00 pm

Defense better step up…DB’s better pay attention…

  427. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 10:01 pm

    Good time for a turnover

  428. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:02 pm

    What price sack?

  429. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 10:02 pm

    Or a sack! 🙂

  430. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:02 pm

Great Blitz call, CA cannot handle the blitz, they need to blitz again!!!!

  431. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:03 pm

Curran and/or Kekaula reporting Aaron Brown may have injured his hamstring.

  432. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:03 pm

    NIce Sack AB!!!!!!!!!!!

  433. Bulla September 4, 2009 10:04 pm

    defense let’s go, nice sack

  434. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:04 pm

Hey, Aloha Stadium crowd? The Warriors could use your help right now.

  435. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:04 pm

    WHAT DID I SAY!!!!!! 3 & FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  436. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:05 pm

DB’s: Don’t get beat over the top!!!!!!!!!

  437. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:06 pm

Arm was forward… PLay Zone with a corner blitz!!!!!

  438. kush September 4, 2009 10:06 pm

    good call Konaboy!

  439. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:07 pm

Our “Inexperienced Defense” might be our savior this game and our Trump card this season!

  440. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 10:08 pm

    Two HUGE plays….. Two more

  441. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:08 pm

    Wow. Home cooking?

  442. Garret September 4, 2009 10:09 pm

    Game over…whew.

  443. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:09 pm

Not to say it’s a horrible call on the field, but if Curran/Kekaula are to be believed, it should’ve been a “call on the field stands” deal.

  444. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:09 pm

    it’s an incomplete pass…c’mon refs…don’t be “WAC”… lol

  445. Bulla September 4, 2009 10:10 pm

bottom line is we got lucky….IMHO, we didn’t take care of the ball, and we’re fortunate to get out of this one

  446. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:10 pm

too many turnovers…but D looks good

  447. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:10 pm

Wow…I stand corrected? That’s gonna be another mar on WAC officials…nonetheless……………SCORE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  448. duffer (iPhone) September 4, 2009 10:10 pm

What a time to get the D’s 1st TO

  449. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:10 pm

And just to be fair, it wasn’t looking good for the visitors at that point anyway, but still. From “one in a million” chance to game over. Tough break. Good game, Bears. Warriors, you’ve got a ways to go.

  450. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:10 pm

WOW… game over…. We got away with one. We need polish up on few things to say the least! It was fun all!!!!

  451. kush September 4, 2009 10:11 pm

    terrible call.

  452. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:11 pm

Run out the clock??? Eh, Leahey…be quiet.

  453. Bulla September 4, 2009 10:11 pm

watch the replay, incomplete pass, not a fumble….

  454. kush September 4, 2009 10:12 pm

play like that on the road and UH will lose.

  455. las vegas September 4, 2009 10:12 pm

    Pops is slightly senile

  456. Bulla September 4, 2009 10:12 pm

i think taking a knee is a classy decision…..one bright spot

  457. Garret September 4, 2009 10:12 pm

    BowsForever,

There were a couple of calls in this game that I think definitely were in favor of the home team…UH would have won without that last call anyway, but I can’t imagine how unhappy UCA was about that reversal.

  458. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:13 pm

special teams was great…coach should be given a lot of credit

  459. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:13 pm

kush, no doubt. Boise State, Week 1 is not the example for UH to be following.

I gotta see the replay tomorrow afternoon…is Leahey seriously messing up that much? Blaze Suarez? 😀

  460. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 10:14 pm

Smelled like home cooking on the part of the refs on that one call.

Smart for UH to run the clock out. It would just look bad if they punched it in.

  461. Bulla September 4, 2009 10:14 pm

line of the night from papa leahey after the game….

hawaii escapes brilliantly from this one…..brilliantly……

oh boy, i gotta crash, it’s 2:25 in the morning, and we got a football game tomorrow …..

drive safely, have a safe and happy 3 day weekend Tsaikos…….1-0 AURYTE

  462. Shannon September 4, 2009 10:15 pm

They better get their sh*t together…….this was supposed to be the “weakest” team on schedule!

  463. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:15 pm

Garret, thanks for the info. I wasn’t listening in to the entire game, so I only caught that last probably favorable call. Of course, that was a HUGE break for the Warriors.

  464. jm2375 September 4, 2009 10:15 pm

    Good win Warriors!

That was a little close. Need to work on holding on to the ball…

  465. TChahng [서울] September 4, 2009 10:16 pm

I agree Bulla. Arm was coming forward.

  466. expat September 4, 2009 10:16 pm

What a terrible call to end it. At least we could count on McMackin to do the classy thing and take a knee.

It is going to be a looong season, but boy can Salas play. Too late over here.

  467. kush September 4, 2009 10:16 pm

UCA did play their hearts out and my hat goes off to them. terrible call at the end. special teams looks good. Mr. Smith is a stud. Glad to see Blaze Suarez hitting hard. we know the oline needs work and GA can scramble. Salas is clutch. Green can boogie (according to Bulla :).

  468. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:16 pm

Taylor is special on return…Henry also very good. No nonsense.

  469. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:17 pm

Alexander needs to stop running…but he is a gamer

  470. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:18 pm

That’s why I love this place. We’re all fans, but we call it like we see it.

WAC refs, if there isn’t enough to reverse the call, you shouldn’t reverse it.

  471. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:18 pm

    Kush…. True Story.

  472. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:19 pm

defense shined…Soares, Smith, Satele did a great job. brown was huge hope he’s okay.

  473. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:20 pm

Salas sounds like he’s gonna have a great 2 years ahead of him.

About Pilares…those who saw the game, was his fumble a straight-up mistake?

  474. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:21 pm

besides bradley’s td was there any catches by taylor or bradley?

  475. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:22 pm

Salas will have a monster year!

  476. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:22 pm

Just heard from Curran/Kekaula…7 catches, 180 yards for Salas?! Sounds like a good night…for a wideout. Very nice.

  477. tom September 4, 2009 10:22 pm

You can correct me, but I don ‘t believe this was a homecooking type officating.

The officials for the game would be a composite of Wac< MWC, Pac-10 and Mid America or Conference USA unless they (collectively) don’t like Central Arkansas or the Southland!

  478. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:24 pm

tom – I’d forgotten about the multi-conference referee system. Thanks for reminding me.

OK, no home cooking, just a bad call.

  479. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 10:25 pm

I guess we can relate to how the fans at Indiana, Kent State, and even Oregon felt about their respective teams’ performances in their season openers.

One game doesn’t make a team.

That’s the feeling I’m getting from some folks here. If we went by that logic and judged teams on how they fared their first game, then Oregon should just mail it in for the year and Indiana and Kent State are on their way to losing records.

But alas, this is just Week 1 of the college football season and all of these teams, as well as the Warriors, can work on their deficiencies and improve. I can almost guarantee that the Warrior team we saw in this game WILL NOT be the Warrior team we see at the end of the year versus Navy and Wisconsin.

That said, it’s on to Week 2 and time to prepare for what the Cougars will bring to the table in Seattle next week.

  480. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:26 pm

BowsForever… it was a legit fumble….. he had bobbled the catch so I don’t think he had as good a possession on it as he normally would have.

  481. duffer September 4, 2009 10:28 pm

Ryan Henry should return punts all season!

The front four needs a couple of pass rushers!

CA is a very good team. Well coached!

  482. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:29 pm

#479, I hope you’re right but this was an FCS team…..

  483. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:30 pm

We’re supposed to have a more established offense. There was plenty of sputtering today despite the big plays.

How’d the O-line do on penalties, tonight, btw?

  484. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:33 pm

I don’t think the O-line had any penalties… they just need alot work…. Good thing GA can scramble

  485. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:33 pm

oh yeah penalties was really kept to a minimum.

  486. BowsForever September 4, 2009 10:34 pm

Scramble Alexander. Has a nice (though not ideal) ring to it.

No penalties by the O-line is a big, big improvement from last season, that’s for sure.

  487. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:36 pm

we just need to rest up and get ready for the long road trip…get fonoti, brown, and purcell back strong.

  488. Konaboy September 4, 2009 10:41 pm

Is Mack on crack?? Press conference he said “the o-line did a good job”. That I don’t get…..

  489. G (China) September 4, 2009 10:45 pm

$1000 to be donated by McDonalds to UH program

  490. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2009 10:45 pm

Much props to Central Arkansas for playing their hearts out! They almost won the game. It appears certain that they will do well in Southland Conference play if they can maintain the production on both sides of the ball that they experienced tonight versus UH.

FCS teams DO beat FBS teams on occasion, and with the influx of FBS-caliber talent onto some FCS squads it’s not surprising that the better teams out of the FCS are hanging with some of the FBS teams they play.

We’ve already had one FBS team (Temple) go down this week to a FCS team (Villanova) and the Saturday games haven’t even started.

  491. JGM September 4, 2009 10:54 pm

    Just my thoughts.

We had 4 turnovers. 3 were in the red zone I believe. The 4 turnovers made the game way to close. Waaaaaaaay to close.

If we had 3 turnovers we win and it’s a good game.

With 2 turnovers we win big.

With 1 turnover we blow them away.

With 0 turnovers, no contest and we see the reserves in the second half.

Just need to limit the turnovers/mental mistakes.

  492. John Garcia September 4, 2009 11:04 pm

The post game interview replay is looping here: http://bit.ly/UHFBLIVE.

Audio is a little soft from broadcast, but hope you enjoy! We’ll work on better audio next home game!

    Thanks!
    JG

  493. madeinhawaii September 4, 2009 11:05 pm

Did we give up 4 sacks? At that rate, that would be 52 sacks in 13 games.. isn’t that the same as last season? Is it the Oline or is it Alexander leaving the pocket too early and therefore not being able to get rid of the ball without drawing a penalty.

Not a good sign when your QBack is your team’s best rusher, 4.5x more than the best RB.

Turn-overs like those tonight would have killed us with just about any of the remaining teams Hawaii has to play.

Thank goodness it was UCA and the Warriors got a win with a chance to review and correct things before next week.

Warriors showed a lot of potential. Got to capitalize on it.

Decent attendance for a Friday night game. This should pick up a bit, given our next two home opponents are Fresno and Boise.

    Reported: 35,751
    Turnstile: 33,298

You need a bit of luck to win. UH got lucky.

It could be a loooong season.

    Good luck to the Bows.

  498. labrat September 4, 2009 11:59 pm

The crowd got 2 false starts made it difficult near the south endzone when UH really needed it.

I thought the defense did a really good job. The CA offense did not surprise me. They ran their regular offense. Nothing I haven’t seen before. Its just that they do it so well. I like how they ran that little runningback in the A gap between the center and guard.

We played poorly. Nobody should be happy with that performance. I hope Mack was talking about CA’s o-line. Our o-line did not play well. They gave up four sacks against an FCS team. We keep playing like that, and in 13 games that is going to be 52 sacks. Yes some of the sacks were Alexander’s fault, but our o-line did not look good. Our o-line did get one penalty. The two penalties were a false start on Kia and a block in the back on the punt that pinned us at the one foot line. We should be embarrassed and better start practicing with a purpose or this is going to be a very long season.

However, not everything was bad. If we didn’t commit those turnovers, we win this game going away. Look at all the turnovers that took place inside the red zone. Alexander was intercepted in the endzone and fumbled at the CA 19. Pilares fumbled the ball at the CA 3 yard line. Alexander’s first fumble on the second play of the game was at the UH 16 leading to a quick CA score. If we don’t commit those turnovers, it is a much different game.

Our d-line could not get pressure on the QB. I hope Fonoti gets back soon because we need him. Without the pressure on the QB, our inexperienced DBs were exposed. I hope Aaron Brown is alright. We need him this season too.

Alexander played well in the second half. He threw for 300+ yards and had 3 TDs in the game. He also rushed for 76 yards. IF he didn’t have the three turnovers it would have been a very good game for him. Salas looked good as usual with 7 catches for 180 yards. That’s a 25.7 yard average. I also think the returners did well. Taylor had a 25 yard kick return average and Henry returned 5 punts for 50 yards. As the team with the worst punt return average in the nation last year, it is apparent coach Tormey has made a difference in that area. Speaking of Coach Tormey, his two safeties (Silva and Smith) had 10 tackles apiece.

hey tsaikos g00d to b back to the blog. great job warriors tonite on squeaking past uca. i agree wit coach mac on the line did well. imo most of the sacks occurred due to the receivers having trouble getting open and ga spotting them. the only real mistake they made was the first fumble. i think uh needs to run quicker routes to improve on lessening sacks. sometimes it seems the routes take t00 long to open up. they had a lot of yards off the simple screens. i remember colt days they would run just short outs bubble screens or slants which would easily gain at least 5 yards. that way by l00king at the coverage if its l00se just call a quick slant in and chip away the yardage. that would easily decrease the number of sacks.

The storyline in this game is that the defense allowed 6 points in the final 43 minutes. And the offense emerged in the 58th minute, turning a deficit, a possible loss, and the embarrassment of losing to a D-1AA school into a lead and eventual victory.

With the Warrior back to the wall and facing such pressure they prevailed. And resultingly– pulling out a victory and escaping a possible loss, and escaping the wrath of the awaiting cynics and the naysayers that would have certainly surfaced had they lost.

That’s big pressure for the team and coaches. And they came through, none the less.

This game the Warriors can build from, for they can learn and keep importantly their confidence and momentum going.

Very good point. Agree. The fan’s cheering was really noticeable as I was watching throughout the telecast.

  505. Pomai September 5, 2009 12:25 am

FYI CAU is a darn good team, I would say they could play in D1 right now, they made some good plays all night long. We looked really bad that first half, but then improved in the second, biggest thing I noticed is the front line needs help, I don’t care how good of a QB you are without protection your not going to be able to run the game plan.

Congrats to the Warriors, you hung in there and pulled it out.

WassupDoc called the right score 24 – 20 UH

    Night all

I thought Henry did a really good job returning punts. I liked how he caught the ball with the defender in face and made him whiff. Now if he and Taylor could get some blocks.

I can still feel that hit Blaze made on that receiver.

how bout the one on the QB for that 2 pt conversion. he didn’t even know blaze was coming.

I sit in the southendzone and the fans are real lolo there. After Salas made the huge run and UH offense lined up the noise was so loud that the players were signaling for us to quiet down but what do they do? The noise got louder so the UH cheerleaders held up the quiet cards and quiet appeared on the Jumbotron but I do not think the people there can read. Da lolos.

    Aloha Tsaikos

Tailgating with the Tsaikos A+ Great food and an amazing crowd of people. As usual I lurked, listening in on some great stories and conversations. Thanks for the warm greeting for our family — Mrs. Lopaka and Son No. 1 really enjoyed themselves.

    Crowd Enthusiasm and Participation

D in the first half (what is it with all the folks who arrive half way through the first quarter — that is like coming to the movie 15 minutes after it starts)

C+ in the second half until the beast came alive with the great Salas play that saved the game

Team Play Not ready for prime time. Embarrassing to watch. Central Arkansas was the team that played with precision and ball control. Virtually error free through most of the game. Alexander hung on to the ball and lost yards when he should have just thrown it away. Where is the team that is supposed to be carrying on the run and shoot legacy of scoring so fast that they can come back from any deficit?? Every once in a while we see it. Did we see it in the fourth quarter? Agree with those who say that any of the remaining teams on our schedule would have beaten us tonight.

Coaching ?? I don’t know what grade to give. I have been a big believer in Coach Mack and his crew but I never expected the team to struggle as it did for most of the game tonight, and some of the choices Coach made were mystifying.

In particular, the decision in the second half to send the team out to kick a point after when only a two point attempt made any sense. (Adding one point put us ahead by only six points so if they scored a touchdown, we lose. If they score only a field goal we win even if the two point attempt fails.) Eventually somebody on the sidelines figured out the math, called time out, and then we went for the two points.

Much good to build on, much bad to correct. Go Warriors!! On to Seattle. Beat the Cougars!!
