UH lands d-end

The Warriors yesterday secured a commitment from defensive end Siaki Cravens of Long Beach City College.

Cravens, who is 6 feet 3 and 240 pounds, signed with Utah in February 2008. He redshirted with the Utes last year. After the spring semester, he decided to transfer.

Cravens said he received interest from USC and UCLA, but opted to commit to UH because of the Warriors’ coaching staff and team’s traditionally strong defensive line. Four former Warriors were selected in the past five NFL drafts: Travis LaBoy, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Melila Purcell III and David Veikune.

Cravens joins the Warriors in January, and will have three years to play two seasons.

how ironic that i was just thinking of posting about the need for some recruiting news, since, technically this saturday is a bye.

looks like a great pick up for an area that we are in dire need of. check that first video. this guy is an amazing athlete.

btw, is he related to the cravens of laie past???

  5. ai-eee-soos September 23, 2009 12:22 am

He’s not eligible to play against LaTech Sept. 30. I already asked.

    mr. tsai.

doesn’t he have three years to play three?

    2008 redshirt at utah
2009 long beach cc year one
    2010 year two
    2011 year three
    2012 year four

since he was a qualifier out of hs he don’t need an aa degree either.

  18. Kekoa September 23, 2009 3:19 am

It’s 6:00 AM in Sin City. Heading to the airport in a few minutes. Posting one last time before closing down the ‘puter.

Al, Slugger has the inside track. My good friend Tom came to the TV-gate at Genji’s armed with the yearbook and his recollection of my reckless speed and agility on the hardwood. Vertical leap was never measured, but I could touch the rim with a good south swell!

It’s an interesting tale of adventure. One that even DPK couldn’t have written in one of his novels. A story of both how I ended up in the Azores, Portugal, from Kapalama Heights, and being awarded the nick, “Spud.” The story continues on the football field later at a Georgia HS and with the U.S. Army. Let’s get this all sorted out at a show-and-tell CC one day.

Reporting from the 9th island, I’m the last, remaining Tsaiko “Warrior Jack.”

  38. chopsueyboy September 23, 2009 7:24 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!
All this talk on Bobby Curran show suggest using taller players from other positions and/or sports to help out at cornerback.
Doesn’t this weaken our run defense having only 9 tacklers and what if the receivers runs a different route?

  39. whitey September 23, 2009 7:29 am

chopsueyboy, good point about run d, but if a tall receiver going kill us with his leaping ability are we going to keep using a db that cannot match his jump. unlv scored 3 tds with the same alley oop.

  42. bstunna2002 September 23, 2009 7:41 am

Morning Tsaiko’s # 38- I think certain situations call for a taller defender or help over the top, I think we all knew who the ball was going to Great call by UNLV they went to it once and it worked so wh not do it again they had the mismatch, it might have been a different story if Tank had turned to play the ball, hopefully the recievers spend some time using the jug machine cause dropped passes are part of the reason we lost, hopefully our reciever will put in the extra work.

  43. Garret September 23, 2009 7:50 am

    Stretch,

The bike hasn’t shipped yet and apparently will not be shipping in the near future. Hopefully UH will get before the end of the season.

  44. letsgowarriors September 23, 2009 7:52 am

mack said he didnt want to double up on ryan wolfe on that last TD play, we ended up having 3 guys guarding him w/ mana silva drifting towards wolfe as the 4th defender. we only brought 4 guys on the pass rush which is why there was no pressure. silva should have been helping hopkins up top on that play, but clayton looked silva off and caught him drifting towards the middle of the field leaving payne 1 on 1 w/ tank.

the stunt on the right side of the DL was picked up. we jsut didnt execute. enough of this playing WR and DE at CB to prevent the jumpball. thats just plain ridiculous.

  45. Slugger September 23, 2009 7:55 am

    al,

That 1st video you posted of Cravens catching balls while jumping over those ‘posts’ is impressive. But would he be used in the same position on the receiver that Tank was playing in the UNLV game? If he’s on the line, he’s not covering receivers at the corner, right? I don’t know this “defensive stuff”.

Gotta go water the slugs & get going for the day.
    Esme & out….

  51. labrat September 23, 2009 8:57 am

Craven is a nice looking runningback.

  52. Da Punchbowl Kid September 23, 2009 8:58 am

Ya know, we’re gonna be loaded on the D line for a few years with some of this young talent we have on the squad. And despite what certain naysayers post, our defensive line is just a couple of injuries from being very solid. The greatest thing is that they play with a lot of heart!

  53. al September 23, 2009 9:25 am

labrat….i was thinking that too. but, how about a supersized slotback. pity the safeties.

  54. madeinhawaii September 23, 2009 9:40 am

“That’s another reason I chose Hawai’i,” Cravens said. “They’re known for their defensive linemen. With me playing d-end, it’s the perfect place for me to go.”

One way to build a great football program is to establish a solid reputation. Quarterbacks, receivers, centers, defensive linemen.

  58. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 23, 2009 9:55 am

I fell asleep before the Call The Coach Show last night.

Anyone hear if Coach Mack addressed how the team and the coaching staff has been able to adjust to the adjustments made after the half by the opposing teams?

In the last two games thus far, we’ve seen both Washington State and UNLV run the ball pretty well against us to start the first half. Granted against Wazzu, Coach Mack says the D was in pass-defense mode considering the lead they had over Wazzu, but with a close game against UNLV going into the second half, it proved to be costly to keep our offense on the sidelines for almost 90% of the 3rd quarter.

Not sure if it’s the road syndrome or if it’s a mental thing considering we’ve had the lead going into the half on both road games because in the past, we’ve been able to adjust come the 3rd quarter when we’re down. That’s a good thing, but we need to be more consistent on that with a lead or not.

The LaTech game is going to be HUGE!!! Earlier in the year I too, like many, thought this was almost a no-win situation as we’ve never really faired well in Ruston (lost with Timmy and ALMOST lost with Colt and Co.). Not sure what LaTech’s stance on offense is this season as I really thought Dooley was going to run the ball to death, but we’ve seen the passing game from them to start off their 2009 campaign.

Not sure what LaTech’s receivers and their QB are like, I know they’ve got a LARGE offensive line though. If LaTech wants to get into a shoot out with us in a week then we’ll win. If not, it’s going to be a long day. It’s going to depend on how we come out and handle the second half and how we can close out our redzone opportunities.

  59. Dirty Commish September 23, 2009 9:56 am

OMG!!! A Pink Zebra Sheet Set??? Just what I always wanted!!! Thank you Spambot! You’ve answered my prayers!!!

Question… is 240 a little light for a DE? Are they eventually going to convert him to linebacker? I can understand the speed rush but eventually you’re gonna have to get more stout on the line and clog up running lanes or eat some blocks to free up the LBs.

  60. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 23, 2009 9:57 am

Because so many of us will be downtown next Wednesday, why not declare a case of the “running stomach” to the boss and then meet up at Murphy’s for the game?

Also, I didn’t see any identification of the pictures in the photo gallery posted in yesterday’s blog – was it there and I missed it? Although I’m trying to improve my identification skills in putting faces to names, there are a lot of regulars & their Best Friends around here whom I cannot picture in my mind’s eye. That information would have been very helpfu, especially for folks like me who need memory props or cannot get to socialize in person.

BTW – I know that his schedule is grueling now that he’s a member of the working class as well as a newbie grad student, but how is Jason doing these days? I miss his thoughtful and information-filled posts -t’s a good thing that we still have Garret around.

Again, if anyone wants two tickets to Thursday’s Boise State volleyball match, please let me know. swood at hoku dot com. Please include your real name and phone number so I can arrange to pass along the tickets.

The announcement about men’s and women’s basketball tickets came out.

    Men’s Basketball Season-Ticket Prices
Lower Level: $270 (plus $100 Premium Seat Contribution; Single Seats Only)

It’s confusing – what does Single Seats Only mean? We cannot buy two tickets? Are Senior tickets available at the lower level?

I called the ticket office and got stuck in Voicemail Hell. How do I get through to a real human being on the phone?

    Dirty C,

I believe Paipai is in that weight range. If this kid is as athletic as advertised, and he puts on 15-20 lbs in the next year he’ll be a player.

  63. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 23, 2009 10:14 am

240 lbs can easily turn into 255lbs or 260lbs is let’s say the kid is a high schooler going into his freshman year of college, but this verbal commitment is older than college freshman.

I’m sure he can put on more “MANA” when he gets to UH after signing his LOI.

Speaking of “lighter” defensive ends, I know many have asked and so have I earlier, but…

    What’s Aaron Rink’s status?

Braddah was listed below 230lbs earlier in the year.

don’t know if this was posted yet; brings plenty experience. – FYI.

University of Hawai’i head women’s basketball coach Dana Takahara-Dias announced today the addition of Patrick Knapp to her coaching staff.

Knapp is the third assistant coach to be hired by Takahara-Dias, which rounds out her staff.

Knapp spent the last five seasons as head coach at the University of Pennsylvania and was the head coach at Georgetown for 18 seasons prior to that.

“Coach Knapp brings 26 years of head coaching experience to the Rainbow Wahine basketball program,” Takahara-Dias said. “He has coached in the Big East Conference and in the Ivy League. He will provide an increased geography base in the recruiting department as he is well respected on the East Coast.”

Knapp joins associate coach Da Houl and assistant coach Serenda Valdez to complete Takahara-Dias’ staff.

  66. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 23, 2009 10:55 am

I didn’t read all of Ann Miller’s article today about the WAC season for the Rainbow Wahine, but I’m pretty sure her topic was spot on.

I called into the Call The Coach Show with Dave Shoji last week asking him about what are the necessary preparations needed both mentally and physically heading into the WAC season and then moving on to play the NCAA tourney.

Lord knows the WAC has NO real competition for the Wahine. NONE. Recently NMSU has been good, sometimes close, but decent enough to scare UH fans into thinking a 4 set win as opposed to a sweep over the Aggies, but we all know the eventual outcome.

I don’t know if there are many other programs in other sports that experience this sort of backward turn heading into their own conference. Teams like UCLA and Stanford can get better playing quality teams in their own conference, while we must try to find and KEEP the motivation within ourselves without killing ourselves or upsetting team mates through competitiveness. The kind of competitiveness the Wahine probably won’t find looking at them in the opposite side of the court come WAC play.

They’ve got to force themselves to be PERFECT to stay on their toes. Setting match by match goals like sweeping opponents and keeping them under 15 points per set is an example. Or to have matches without service errors and such. To be content with another WAC Championship and dominance won’t do much to advance the Wahine back to at least the Final Four… it hasn’t in a while.

As Dave Shoji said, “we play in the WAC and there is nothing we can do about it”.

  67. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 23, 2009 11:00 am

I’m sure Coach Dana hired a good fit. Nice resume though! 😉

The Wahine basketball program cannot afford to hire any coach at any position to use this job at UH as a “stepping stone”.

  68. ST start another blog September 23, 2009 11:22 am

Have one blog for the warm and fuzzys, like this one

…and another one where people can speak whatever, talk football, vent, argue, say whats on their mind without worrying of offending a tsaiko.
last sunday was an example, some posters wrote what they saw from the game– and then you have the ones like kekoa and DPK quashing the opinions of the posters that were just saying what came to their minds

all i know its not fun posting here of an opinion or analysis or suggestion thats not a prevailing thought because one of the TSAIKOS will put you down.

  69. alnbama September 23, 2009 11:32 am

A Big Howdy to the Warrior Nation, just got back from Vegas last night. Was awesome to see all the Tsaiko’s in attendance. Thanks Mr. Kekoa for sitting me next to RainbowCliff, what a super dude, so much info on Rainbow basketball of the past. Just in back of me was Tyaiea, Go Na Allii, being a 77 grad of Aiea High, was surprised to find out his daughter was a classmate and also a 77 graduate. Hey aunty Liz, always nice seeing you, maybe next time will be in NY for the Army game. Well anyways, was a really good game, except for the outcome, very entertaining. Oh yeah, cannot forget Mr. & Mrs. Ahouse and the twins, and Derek, BigHilo and family, and all the other Awesome Tsaiko’s i met. Rest Warriors, Get Healthy, Prepare for War, see you in La Tech.

  70. Dirty Commish September 23, 2009 11:43 am

Well I hope we stock up on guys like this because we’re gonna need a healthy rotation… not just for injuries but if teams continue to run it right at us, as we saw at UNLV… the boys got a lotta heart but you can’t be on the field for 9 minutes and have any gas left in the tank at the end of the game.

That being said it’s rare that I actually have a good feeling about a team after a loss and this was one of those instances. They didn’t totally self-destruct on the road as has been the bugaboo of Warrior teams in the past. Played hard, played tough. Just need to clean up mistakes, make smarter decisions… and Rodney Bradley is turning out to be a straight up baller.

I would feel comfortable saying UH is the third best team in the WAC right now. Nevada is turning out to be a disappointment and we’ll see what LaTech has to offer… but a far cry from the doormat these so called experts predicted in the preseason.

Karaoke in the Deck 12 forward observation lounge at 2030.

Today is signup for the Murder Mystery Dinner Experience (70 max.). Seen it in the dining room on past cruises but never entered.

Tonight’s professional theater performance is a Comedian-Magician…those are ususally very good. The night club has an Adult Comedy show (PG-18) by Sam Griesbaum at 2230. No singles gatherings listed tonight.

For the alcoholic beverage crowd the 0800-1100 Happy Hour specials are same as yesterday in the ship’s 11 bars. NCL-“U “(university?) courses today include: “Magarita Tasting” ($15) session in the Las Ramblas bar at 1500 and “Mojito Tasting” ($15 ) in the Windjammer lounge at 1600. But the big promo is the “Try Before you Buy” tequila tasting in the Duty-Free shop at 1830-2000. Will keep an eye out for the “Pub Crawl” contest…all this might just be a warmup for that event. 🙂

BTW, my listing of activities do not include the numerous casino promos, spa specials, Fitness room activities, and vendor presentations. Time to head for the hot tub and pools again…and the the ice cream bar for Peaches….

The listing of known Tsai-ko cruisers is at:

Having a little more breathing room, it was great to have seen alnbama who traveled from Huntsville,AL; wafan, Izzy and djmithco our stewards in Washington State; Rainbow Cliff and his wife Rhonda; BNS, wife who has a great laugh” and niece Sue; Rich 2176; Las Vegas; Expat (our former neighbor as a little boy ), wife and family; Chopsuey boy and son Nicky; Kama crab at UNLV; TY Aiea, wife and son; Brew808; Ronnie and sons; Garret and family; LostHawaiian; 702warrior nation and Ellen; and the rest of the Taisko regulars.

Missed Uku, Longdistance808, Florida Ted, and 99club at UNLV.

Don’t want to put you down BUT there will be a bunch of diverse opinions, analysis or suggestions which will result in catcalls, disagreements, hostile comments etc. etc.

So why would be need a new blog? What we really need is civility.

Let’s try edit this so it actually makes some sense…

and another one where people (I) can speak whatever, talk football, vent, argue (agree with me), say whats on their (my) mind without worrying of offending a tsaiko.

…and I can be free to be whoever I want and change my nic and carry on conversations with myself.

..I just come for the freebies

btw when’s the next give away?

  81. WarriorMojo September 23, 2009 12:53 pm

There’s ZERO need for another blog because critical analysis and insight is ALWAYS welcome here. All that’s required is a little tact and a little effort to communicate clearly. In other words, no “smokin’ mirrors”. On the other hand if you just want to whine and vent and demand someone be benched or fired, then you can kiss off. There’s another board that specializes in that already.

Look, no one on this blog thinks Mack is perfect (Mrs. Mack maybe?) or that the team never makes mistakes. The difference is that when one of the coaches or players makes a mistake — when OUR team loses a game — Tsaikos do not pile on because we understand that NO ONE feels worse about the mistake than the person who made it. This is OUR team. This team plays plays for US. If you remember that simple FACT as you write your post, I’ll bet money that your opinion won’t be quashed. That’s not to say everyone will automatically agree with what you say, but if you want that then YOU start your own blog.

I just finished archiving the Warrior-related articles in ESPN 1420 Magazine. I couldn’t find the articles online, so I manually typed up the quotes…so, please forgive any typos I might have made.

I’ll post one quote from each article in my next batch of posts, but I won’t post the whole thing here because it is too long. If you can get a print copy of ESPN 1420 Magazine, there are some great photos and the full articles there.

  95. Garret September 23, 2009 1:44 pm

When going over the 3-game road trip, I noticed that Mac said that he felt that La Tech was one of the top 2 teams in the WAC (with BSU the other I assume).

We play three consecutive games on the road. I feel bad for our fans because they’ll get to see us open the season, and then they won’t see us for an entire month. We play Washington State in Seattle, which I’m happy about because we have a lot of fans in that area. And in Las Vegas, I know half the stadium will be filled with our fans. And then we go to Louisiana Tech, which I think is one of the top two teams in our conference. So that’s going to be a challenge.

  96. Garret September 23, 2009 1:44 pm

Note that Mac’s praise of La Tech was from *before* the season, so it isn’t an example of a coach hyping an opponent right before playing them.

  97. Garret September 23, 2009 1:46 pm

The feature article on Greg Alexander had the info about how he actually didn’t want to play QB at first and was upset when his Pop Warner team tried to get him to play QB.

About how he was reluctant to play QB in Pop Warner football, Alexander said:
“At first, I didn’t even want to play the position. I was kind of upset about moving to the QB position. But after a while, it got to be kind of fun. When you’re the quarterback, you’re in control of the game. You can control the tempo. It’s also the most challenging position on the field because you have so many different things you have to think about.” (EMAG)
    </blockquote.

  98. Garret September 23, 2009 1:47 pm

Rocky’s story included a discussion about how he was inspired by the example his grandmother set:

About being inspired by his grandmother, who passed away in 2006, Rocky said:
“My grandmother was my best friend. She taught me a lot in life. When she was in pain, and on her last legs, she never quit. She battled through, and I knew that was something I had to do. I couldn’t quit on her, my family or myself.” (EMAG)

  99. Garret September 23, 2009 1:48 pm

So many great quotes from the article on Bess, but I liked the first one the best:

About the importance of working to improve, even if nobody else is out there to help with motivation, Davone Bess said:
“I was in the weight room working out [on a recent trip back to UH], and I saw a kid just sweating and working hard. He was in there by himself, and all I could tell him was ‘Just keep working, keep doing what you’re doing, because you’ve brought back so many memories for me.’ When I was at UH, there were so many times when I was out there by myself because I knew it would pay off one way or another.” (EMAG)

  100. Garret September 23, 2009 1:49 pm

If you notice any typos in the quotes I archived on my blog, please let me know so that I can fix them…that was a LOT of typing and I typed them up very quickly.

I notice that in the current edition of the H-Mail that UH Athletic Supporters are asked to wear GREEN at all events.

“Think Green” Message Being Sent To UH Fans

UH fans are encouraged to “Think Green” and show their UH pride by wearing green shirts when attending Hawai`i sporting events.

Head Football Coach Greg McMackin is leading the charge and hopes Warrior Nation turns out in green for the team’s WAC home opener against Fresno State on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Aloha Stadium at 5:05 p.m. “When our players and coaches look into the stands and see a sea of green, it really energizes us and fills us with pride.” McMackin said. “I want our fans to embrace a ‘Think Green’ mindset, so we have a unified and consistent look in the stands during all of our home and away games.”

In support of the “Think Green” initiative, Hawaiian Telcom, sponsor of the Fresno State game, will distribute 10,000 green megaphones and 20,000 ti leaves at the stadium entrances. In addition, 2,000 green ThunderStix will be distributed in the UH student section.

Most of the T-Regulars wear black. Should we consider getting green Tsai-ko Shirts?

The problem with a color such as green is selecting the actual shade – for example, DrDoc wore a lime-green teeshirt on Saturday while I wore an emerald green sweatshirt. Very, very different.

The problem I have with UnderArmour clothing is that it’s horrendously expensive plus the fabrics and the clothing are not manufactured in the US.Charge a lot and pay the workers pennies.

I’ve worked with maybe two dozen organizations over the past 15 years in selling tees as a fundraiser or even to give away to volunteers. We can get a Made-In-The-USA blank plus support a local printing shop, charge $15 to $18 and still make $5 to $8 per shirt in quantities of over 250 shirts.

Watching the Texas/Texas Tech supporters last Saturday was truly inspirational. Any ideas out there as to how to get some sort of uniformity on the shade of green to wear? Or is it even necessary?

Wdoc #103…We’ve actually been working on a new Tsaiko shirt. The design is actually done but I am checking on the colors with the shirt supplier (as well as the style as some ladies have requested a ladies neck type shirt rather than the classic T-shirt). The shirt company I’m talking with has said that UH has a specific shirt color that they use to print out shirts for the Rainbowtique. It is sort of like a forest green color. Anyway, once I get that settled, I can post a picture on Steve M’s site and take orders that way again. Hopefully, it should be soon.

    Aloha Tsaikos!!

What a memorable trip to Vegas. Started with driving out on Thursday, having dinner with ST, the PRINCESS, “Ferd”, and JD -then getting 2 hrs sleep before heading out to the Letterwinner’s & Alumni golf tournament Friday morning at Nellis. (Met lots of Tsaikos at MainStreet – Koakane, James, A-House Ohana, etc.) Nothing like F-14/F-16 or whatever they were taking off 200 yards from where we were teeing off. Quite a site to watch and HEAR!!!

Next, ST tells me the team walk-thru is at 3 at the stadium. I get there and at 3:10 he calls and says he hopes I’m not there yet. Doesn’t start until 4. Arrggh! Back to hotel, quick nap and get ready for the K-Call. What a great evening with everyone, and ST singing “Lion Sleeps Tonight”. Congrats to Las Vegas for finding a great gathering place. A big hello to FAYE!

Game day – great tailgate and bus ride, complete with 12 oz. curls on the way to the game. It was great to meet BHF2 and his family on Friday, but this guy is nutz at the game!!! ’nuff said. Glad Rainbow Cliff & Rhonda made it. Been too long since we’ve seen each other. Also, CRW, alnbama as soloists making the trek out!! Sorry if I didn’t mention everyone…just too many to list!

I’ll be posting pics next week. I’ve got a golf tournament tomorrow, and slammed w/ work Friday.

Get Healthy Warriors. Ruston will be tough!

I spoke with the sales rep and the bike was to ship within 3-5 days as of last Monday. I am arranging to get the bike to Manoa as the charter for LA Tech may not be able to handle the bike considering all of the other gear. The bike has been ordered and paid for, free shipping was to LV but didn’t get there. It will be drop shipped to HNL and as I promised bhf2 I will have your picture taken astride this bike.

I read your blog post from the other day concerning the recycling effort.
I believe that it might be possible to also use the stadium parking lot and the stadium gates for collections. I believe that we may involve some otehr collectors to help in the effort.
I am attempting to help Palama Settlement in their academic/athleticprograms so I want to suggest a deal: collect cans in the stadium lot and at the gates and do the split 1/3 to Tsaikos designee, 1/3 to Palama, 1/3 to Na Koa.
    Any suggestions??
Let’s see what we may make happen!

rich 2176 your timely manner in getting tickets to the tsaiko’s is greatly appreciated. your hard work was one of the main reason the 808 was represented. as one who benefited mahalo plenty and count me in for the next time.

I did mention this to hinshaw when we saw her in vegas and she said she will be looking into it. we will see, we will see…………..

  151. Rich2176 September 23, 2009 6:27 pm

BHF2 – You mean SJSU or Reno? Fresno is a home game this year. I’m gonna try and make Reno depending on dad’s hip situation, but I will be at SJSU, possibly w/ dad.

  152. Rich2176 September 23, 2009 6:33 pm

Koakane – Yeah, now that we know she is a “closet” TSAIKO, we may have a better shot at sideline seats next time. LOL. I was surprised she made her way down to our section(s). She said she may when I saw her at the golf tournament…but to honor her word. She’s an incredible supporter of the entire athletic department. She and JD seem to be on the same page. I took a picture of her and JD at the tournament and said I’d sent it to ST for the blog. She was not shy. Then she tracked down Rep. Takai, and asked for another pic….for the blog. LOL.

gotcha. i gotta check into things about SJSU, can’t commit right now, but prolly not. you may have to yell for me.

but about the next Vegas game, like koakane, count me in too. my hawaii family saw we had so much fun, Hawaii peeps all talking about the next Las Vegas game in Vegas.

Greetings Tsaikos out there is Tsaikoland

Haven’t blogged here for a long while, have been reduced to lurking. Just want to thank all of you that were at Genji’s for your warm hospitality. At the last minute I went to Genji’s to watch the game.

For those of you who seem to enjoy conflict, I can assure you that we are all students of the game. In speaking with a lot of the folks there, they were certainly very knowledgeable and had a great affection for football and a great loyalty to UH.

I just want to thank all of you that contribute to the blog, makes my day at work go faster and let’s me be a more informed fan. I have a son in the UH Marching Band and another son, an incoming freshman at the U and they are also very grateful for all your support. Thanks to ST for making this possible and Garret for all his informative posts and everyone else for their contributions. I just wish I could contribute more to this blog. As you know, we are all out there, just trying to make a living, and supporting UH in small way we can, but it is sure nice to have all you Tsaikos out there.

    WarriorMojo,

#82 – I agree with you 100%. unless someone can tell me that they put in as much time as our coaches (easily 80+ hours every week), it’s hard to believe that these experts would know better than our coaches.

Yes, they do make mistakes. What you hope is that they learn from their mistakes and do better when the opportunity presents itself.

  161. bighilofan2 September 23, 2009 7:14 pm

    Oldie,
    WarriorMojo,

howzit braddaz. agree with you 100% 2. we all make mistakes, like when i asked free fortune teller online crystal ball 😀 “who gonna win, us o Washington, yes or no.” dummy me we played Wassu not Wash.

but neva mine dat, I gotta great tip for Coach Mack. after conferring with myself, a vision came to me. ahem ahem

face facts coach, you love coaching the D. you love it. its in your blood. you can’t help it. you’re the overall coach, but in da heat of battle, you don’t have real time opportunity to coach the present tense O when you’re mind is in coaching the D. that is my opinion of what happened this past weekend, no?

the simple solution is to make Rolo/somebody else responsible for the entire offensive game calling, including PAT or 2point conversion or FG, exception being if you go buzz buzz buzz.. dat way, da dealio is a done deal and you can focus on da D. it’ll free up your timing.

the beauty is you’ll still get the blame if things go wrong. 😀 but at least you won’t get stuck looking like you’re fiddling wit yo we we while the team is figuring out da wo wo. 😆

an dat is why yu, and not I, get paid da big bucks.

    (J)J,

I used to organize the t-shirt orders & printing for the NAU Hawaiian club. I found that it costs more to buy women’s cut t-shirts than the regular tees. It’s so hot to wear those high-neck t-shirts, though, so I’d buy a women’s cut if the neckline was lower. Actually, I’d like a tank top. Still not used to the warm weather here; the high neck shirts are toooo hot.

Oakland’s head coach *really* doesn’t seem to like Samson.

Cable would rather have a backup tackle start at left guard than let Samson Satele start at center? What an indictment on Jake Grove’s intended replacement.

  170. Garret September 23, 2009 7:44 pm

The head coach at Palo Verde was surprised with how much water the UH players got during practices last week.

“Our climate is brutal, especially with pads on,” said Darwin Rost, the head coach at Palo Verde and president of the Southern Nevada Football Coaches Association. “Every coach is well aware of the dangers this heat can pose and although many of us grew up in the age where drinking water was a sign of weakness, we certainly don’t adhere to that practice anymore.”

Even though each coach has different policies on water breaks during practices, every school is required to have a trainer on site for all practices and games.

During games, referees are required to call a water timeout at least once per quarter.

“We feel like kids are better and more alert when they are refreshed, so why not give them water?” Rost said. “The University of Hawaii was up here practicing last week and the amount of water they gave their players was unbelievable. It just makes more sense to keep everyone properly hydrated.”

the L&L show was just great. worth it to watch the re-run in case you missed it. What i learned is that Greg Salas is a great young man. Had the pleasure of meeting his mom in Florida last year. Also learned that the team players feel really good about themselves. Kind of figured as much, watching them handle themselves at the UNLV game.

I am really proud of our team, the players, the coaches. Things are really looking up. I can see giving the coaches suggestions, maybe the word criticizing means the same thing to some odda people, but for me
I think that Coach Mack has earned a mulligan. Really. I say that because I was really impressed with how Greg Salas comported himself and spoke about our team.

    Great job, Greg Salas!

    Go Warriors!

Silicon Valley sees a big business opportunity in the *brick* market via a low-energy production process that could be a breakthrough for the green market and a huge business opportunity for the US. Ordinary bricks are fired for 24 hours at 2,000 degrees F in a process that can take a week, while Calstar bricks are baked at 212 F and the entire process can take just 10 hours. This breakthrough process saves a lot of money because it requires 80% to 90% less energy and emits 85% less greenhouse gasses.

Garret: Did you have to remind me about the Wii price drop? I just bought one at $250. Grr, I should have known better, it makes total sense considering the Xbox 360 and PS3 price drops. But I wasn’t really thinking. This after volunteering as an editor for a video game Web site for several years, that’s pretty stupid of me. 😛

BTW, there is a $50 rebate for Xbox 360 Elite consoles that I read about this morning. That makes the cost $250.

Watched the L&L show tonight. In addition to loving the hell outta the Leahey’s as I usually do, I came away more impressed than ever with Greg Salas. If we have a national stat leader who is becoming the face for UH football this season, its great to have Salas for that role. He is sincere, articulate and VERY intelligent. I wonder if there is a better slot tandem in college ball than he and Pilares. Anywhoo, another great show by Pops and Kanoa and a fine representation for the Warriors in Greg Salas.

I wonder if UH tells all of their vendors to use a specific green color, the pms series, especially the licensed clothing at different retailers and rainbowtique.

At this point, if most of the people that come to home games can all wear the same color, that’d be impressive regardless of the shade.

The PMS series, which I assume means the dark forest green color brought on by UA is a nice looking green though.

BTW, Sports Authority has that new UA “H” logo hat with the green trim that the coaching staff has been wearing. So far it’s the best UH hat from UA I’ve seen thus far. They’ve also got some Greg Salas jerseys.

    Kazz,

Great idea. Color first then shade of green.
Did you listen to the Shoji show?

Um for about half of the show. Had some stuff to do, but I was able to catch the first 15 mins and the last 15 minutes.

I called in and was placed on hold for like 8 minutes and had to endure a commercial break.

Basically I asked coach about the eventual loss of our seniors, Kaufman, Aneli, and Brandt and what role does he see our current players like Tuaniga, Forsythe, and Cascioppo taking next season.

Coach mentioned again that verbal that is another smaller middle like Kaufman that will come aboard along with that setter that “should give Mafua a run for her money” next season.

Thinking forward Danielson will be awesome as usual, Hewitt will be better and that is scary, but GOOD for us, Ka’aihue will continue to be reliable for us, and Ferrell will have a season under her belt, but after that it’s really a bunch of question marks.

Cascioppo is getting some time, but Forsythe isn’t. Hopefully as the WAC season moves forward, we’ll have more opportunities to sub these two in by the last set.

They really need to play at least a whole set. They need to make their mistakes. They need to feel what it’s like to get a kill in division one collegiate volleyball. They both have had a few kills, but obviously you can see that the comfort level isn’t there yet and neither is the speed. Look at Brittany Hewitt. Sure she was penciled in to start at the beginning of the season, but she didn’t look very good against Western Michgan, but man did she step up against UCLA and then going NUTS against Stanford. She got her chances. Cascioppo and Forsythe will need to fight for theirs.

Losing Amber Kaufman means losing argueable the BEST pure athlete on the Wahine team at this time. Not to mention the intensity she inspires.

Losing Aneli is losing a fierce server and a real leader that can do it all, kill, dig, block, and serve.

Losing Brandt is losing depth both in the back court and on the service line. I can’t even count how many times she comes off the bench and swings the momentum back in our favor either off a couragious dig or a serve that is misplayed into a bad passing situation for the other team. Sometimes, one can forget Stephanie Brandt is coming off the bench because of the amount of playing time a “non-starter” gets match to match.

I really thought this season was going to be rough in the beginning and in the NCAA tournament with the lack of time Ka’aihue had last season with her injures, a new OH in Ferrell replacing Jamie Houston, and another newbie replacing Nickie Thomas’ spot upfront. While Thomas finally being able to play last season she wasn’t the best, but she made few mistakes which compensated for what she may have lacked, but Thomas was pretty reliable for us and her MH position was something I worried about.

Now being 9-2 with SWEEPS over UCLA and Stanford, I am MORE than glad I was wrong. Not only were my early season fears unfounded, but the young ladies on this team can play for sure. At this point seems like they are more in control of how far they can get in the NCAA tourney than I had previously thought. Case in point, we should have beat CAL in four and we shouldn’t have looked as shakey as we did against Pepperdine in BOTH matches, but they fought back against CAL to drag it out to five sets and we still swept Pepperdine back to back. Texas… well that’s something else… Not to digress but there is a MASSIVE drop off from #1 Penn State and #2 Texas and then the rest of us. Still not sure how good Washington though, as I’ve never seen them this season.

Thinking forward though… 2010 maybe the challenge I was suspecting though. I mean if you look at it this way in compaing the senior losses of last season to this season, Tara Hittle was a great player and athlete for us last season, but last season was her only time as libero. We’ll have a true libero still returning next season in Ka’aihue. Then you’ve got Jaime Houston. At times she was unstoppable, but then again the only player that could stop her is HER. You can see a little of those two characteristics in Stephanie Ferrell right now.

However the THREE differences in the senior losses last season to this are: Kaufman, Aneli, and Brandt for the same reasons I mentioned earlier. These three were the backbone of this team since the 2007 season and we’re seeing a culmination of their talents come to a head this season and we’ll see whole lot more. Thing is, we just have to enjoy and appreciate it..

I was disappointed with the loss but liked what I saw. On to Ruston!

Tomorrow starts the uno, dos, adios part of the Wahine’s season.

BTW, came home this afternoon and was treated to the sounds of some great Hawaiian music courtesy of my neighbor who was rehearsing with his group.

  213. Ralph September 23, 2009 10:03 pm

Hewitt had the advantage of practicing with the na wahine for a full year and learning to play at d1 speed. The Juco transfers will learn to play faster at practice and whatever game experience they get this season will be a tremendous boost for them next season. Hewitt only got practice time, these two will have a year of Juco and this season to add to their playing experience. They will be fine up front, its the back row rotation that will hurt most, Kaufmann and Aneli played backrow, the jucos do not play backrow. Currently, Ferrell and Hewitt are frequently sub out for serving or back row, now add the 2 jucos with a limit of 12 substitutions per set, tough to do.

seems like wbb practice has started, saw a pic of coach dana with some girls at practice on the UH website. Not sure if they were UH players.

The head coach at Palo Verde was surprised with how much water the UH players got during practices last week.

    .
    .
    .

“We feel like kids are better and more alert when they are refreshed, so why not give them water?” Rost said. “The University of Hawaii was up here practicing last week and the amount of water they gave their players was unbelievable. It just makes more sense to keep everyone properly hydrated.”

    Garret,

Just by reading that last line, was he surprised about how little or how large the amount of water our guys were getting?

Just by the wording, it seems like he was amazed at how little water we were getting.

If so, that’s not good under those conditions as mentioned by that coach.

  216. Ralph September 23, 2009 10:11 pm

I hope coach Dana’s new hire, Knapp, knows how to coach the #4 and #5 positions. seems like the ladies are short and all of them played the #1 or at times the #2 positions. I can’t imagine Dana or Da Houl teaching a 6’3 post player the fine points of post play. not sure what position Serenda played at Cal Poly.

    Ralph,

Yeah, those girls in the background of that photo are the Wahine. One looks to be Sarah Illic and the other looks like Shawna Kuehu.

So… whadda think about the addition of Coach Knapp? When was the last time you saw an assistant that has more experience than the rest of the staff combined?

Regardless, from being the last piece of the puzzle to get Shawna Kuehu here to getting the team together for a pre season camp, she’s started off pretty well.

Now onto the Xs and Os!!!

  218. Ralph September 23, 2009 10:22 pm

Kazz you got to get to the wvb game early tomorrow, it could be over in about an hour or less. the break between the second and third game might be longer than any set played.

OLDIE: Got back yesterday and thank you for remembering me! (Not sure if I want to remember the game!)

Chancellor Hinshaw and Don Weirs are really a class act. Don was PR it everywhere – even in the dining rooms. Terrific guy.

Virginia Hinshaw was greeting the 2000+ at the Boyd tailgate looking quite cool while everyone else look like they were at a sauna. Of course many were eating and didn’t care. After 15-25 minutes, we went back to air conditioned comfort at the hotel!

  222. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 23, 2009 10:28 pm

    Ralph,

I finish work at 4:30 tomorrow and have no plans to drive in an hour’s worth of traffic to PC and then back to Manoa.

    I’m gonna stay in town.

Game is at 7pm… good thing I am not a drinker or else I’d be messed up or passed out at the Varsity come 7pm while killing that kind of time.

  223. al September 23, 2009 10:29 pm

please do not mistake letsgowarriors for a troll.
he is as much a warrior fan as any of us here and no he does not have multi personalities either.

letsgowarriors originally posted as “letsgobows” his name on another forum. but, some of you here chastised him about the team being named warriors so he politely changed it.

he recently moved to the mainland, but nevertheless, remains a true warrior fan.

  224. 808ike September 23, 2009 10:37 pm

    Kazz,

Your post on wahine volleyball is a great synopsis. Right on.

  225. 808ike September 23, 2009 10:40 pm

    Ralph #214,

    Very good observation.

  226. al September 23, 2009 10:42 pm

ralph….serenda coaches the post players and focuses on academics. knapp is a good pickup for dana. he will be like mouse davis was to june jones.

i think mack could use a guy like that…well, he already has one in chris tormey. he should have chris assist him in game day management.

  227. Ralph September 23, 2009 10:44 pm

    isn’t letsgowarriors in Denver?

  228. Slugger September 23, 2009 10:46 pm

    Kazz,

Rost said. “The University of Hawaii was up here practicing last week and the amount of water they gave their players was unbelievable. It just makes more sense to keep everyone properly hydrated.”

I believe Rost was making the point that UH provides their players more water than other teams. Earlier in the article he says something about some teams only taking a water break per quarter. But even at practice, there’s someone with cups of water or a portable ‘tank’ with what looks like a pressurized hose that the players can get water to drink, or pour on their heads. I’m glad to hear that the coaches were making sure the players were well hydrated in LV. It’s pretty deceptive being in the desert. You have to drink water BEFORE you feel thirsty.

Happy birthday to today’s birthday boys!!!

I’ll watch L&L at 11:30. Greg Salas is a class act.

  229. Ralph September 23, 2009 10:47 pm

wasn’t academics one of serenda’s admin duties while not coaching last year

  230. 808ike September 23, 2009 11:00 pm

    Kazz,

On Hewitt, I mentioned about commenting on her during the middle part of
her soph year. The reason: She is playing great on raw talent. When she
develops technique, she will be a great MB. She will enter the same class
as Heather B. and Angelica L. Need to wait and see how she develops.

Right now her footwork is very good. She is somewhat slow in recognizing
which pin the ball will be set to. She blocks well because she closes
fast. She also has very good reflexes. Don’t know anything about serving
    and defense.

  231. Ralph September 23, 2009 11:07 pm

Hewitt doesn’t play back row and rarely given an opportunity to serve. She needs quicker arm action, like Kaufman, and hit the ball much harder. On occasion she shows she is capable of putting some heat on the ball but not consistently. McLachlin states that Danielson, in comparison to a pitcher, has a fastball whereas Hewitt uses the changeup.

  232. jm2375 September 23, 2009 11:12 pm

Speaking of McLachlin, did I hear right – he’s going up to Stanford for the fall to help with their men’s vb team? I’ll miss his commentary. I dunno if it’s because I’m so used to him, but there isn’t anyone else as good.

  233. Cindy & Greg Cee September 23, 2009 11:13 pm

    Goodnight gang! : )

  234. 808ike September 23, 2009 11:26 pm

    jm2375,

    That is correct.

  235. 808ike September 23, 2009 11:31 pm

    Ralph #232 (first sentence),

I am aware of it. She is a M2. Amber is M1.

  236. Ralph September 23, 2009 11:38 pm

808Ike where does your aunty find all the flowers that she and her friend uses for all the leis they make. at the tournament, they presented leis to the opponents as well.

  237. Ralph September 23, 2009 11:39 pm

Lisa Maa will be the color analyst with Leahy.

  238. Kekoa September 23, 2009 11:45 pm

jm2375 ~ I’m in favor of Lisa Strand Ma’a stepping in to do the color commentary for the WVB team. Unfortunately, life is too complicated for her now days. She admits that it is difficult for her to keep up to speed with the abilities of each player. She cares very much about doing them justice on the air, so wants to be totally prepared before going on camera.

Her hoosbann Pono Ma’a is very busy building & maintaining a world class Boy’s jr. nat’l vb team…and…as a result of their daughter making a vb name for herself at Kapalama, their house is in constant vb chaos every 10 minutes, around da clock!

  239. Ralph September 23, 2009 11:51 pm

on 1420 show coach Mac mentioned that he might use Pollard, Salas and Bradley in the back field on certain situations-did the UNLV game wake him up, albeit late, and is he starting to think out of the box on how to use his players. how about avery or pollard on ally oops, i’m sure we’re not the only team with short corners in the 5’8 to 5’10 range.

ST ~ Would you consider Lisa Strand to be a guest on your Warrior Beat show? Her being immersed in a deep Q & A session with 2 of modern media’s most prolific UH Sports reporters would be priceless!

  247. Kekoa September 24, 2009 12:45 am

808ike ~ I have to admit, the thought did cross my mind about the “Miracle on the Hudson” incident. What made it a real nightmare was the thought of it being a “Miracle on the Ala Wai!”

  248. Kekoa September 24, 2009 12:50 am

Rainbow Cliff ~ We could have made UH sports history if you and I played basketball together, back in the day. My pull-up jumper from the top of the key was money in da bank!

RGM is doing well as a punt returner.

Grice-Mullen’s 11.6-yard punt return average is second in the CFL, and if the Lions can get fellow returner Ian Smart activated they could have potentially the best tandem in the league.

“It’s one of those non-think and react things,” Grice-Mullen said as he replayed his Toronto success in his head. “You kind of have to have it your mind to want to get (to the outside). It’s all about instincts and trusting your team and yourself.”

  255. whitey September 24, 2009 5:41 am

  261. Kazz (SIX more for Coach Shoji) September 25, 2009 10:26 am

Man, I was REAL exhausted after the game last night, but good to see Cascioppo getting to start in conference play not sure how much time she would have seen had Kanani not been under the weather, but for the most part, I think she did ok other than a few mental things and Forsythe did nicely in the 3rd set.

Still.. Kind of sloppy play at times. BSU had nothing to lose in front of the largest crowd they’ll see all year so they looked better than a team that is 0-11. Granted not having a starter in the lineup and starting two players that aren’t usually starters (Lee and Cascioppo) effected the “fluidity” of how they started.

    NEXT!!! 😎

  262. Kazz (SIX more for Coach Shoji) September 25, 2009 10:28 am

UH Rainbowtique got a new black shirt.

It’s one of those that only the team and staff have been previously exclusive to.

It says “HAWAII” on the front above a graphic of a football. Only in black right now.

Also got a NICE black UA track jacket with “football” embroidered on the sleeve and a nice “HAWAII” graphic embroidered on the back… 85.00 freakin’ dollars though… (sighs) 🙁 Had to pass on it last night… 🙁
