“UH is getting a steal”

What was announced in January has become official: Mililani High’s Kaimana “Mana” Padello is joining the Warriors as a preferred walk-on.

“He’s my guy,” Mililani head coach Rod York said, “but anybody would say: ‘UH is getting a steal.’ He’s walking on because he wants to stay home and he wants to play for the home team.”

Padello is a pass-rush specialist who played the 5 and 7 techniques in Mililani’s four-man front. He amassed 24 sacks in each of the past two seasons.

“I’m not padding those stats,” York said. “Those are legitimate stats.”

Mililani played a base coverage with minimal blitzing, York said, “and let the boys play fast.”

Mililani was able to create pressure with Padello’s first-step quickness — “in the first 5 yards, he’s probably the fastest in the state,” York said — and his signature double move.

“With Mana, we could do a lot with him because of his speed and his tenacity as far as getting to the ball,” York said. “That guy never quits.”

Padello’s deceptive strength enabled him to shade inside to defend the run.

But Padello apparently did not meet the prototypical numbers recruiters seek in a pass-rusher. He is 6 feet and 205 pounds.

“For a lot of coaches, height was the issue,” York said. “You look at the last two years, his production has been tremendous. He has over 20 sacks per year, and we play the top teams in the state. A lot of his highlights are against the big schools.”

York said Padello shares the same work ethic as former UH slotback Dane McArthur. York recalled the summer when he was a freshman and McArthur was entering his senior season. UH players could pick any of the three time slots to work on conditioning drills.

“That dude ran all three sessions,” York recalled. “That’s Mana, too. He’s non-stop, just like Dane.”

Is Kumoku Noa still joining the team?

Looks like we getting some nice walk ons. Also heard we getting a 6’3″ safety from Bishop Gorman to walk on. Would have been a big time recruit but tore ACL before the season.

I wonder where he ends up playing,he’ll definetly need to put on some size though…Mana has a non stop motor though just like his brother KK did…

I think he’s projected to play linebacker.
But you never know. This defense craves speed.

Cappie … re: prior day post. Fresno St. is leading CSUB in a softball regional game so far. Willmon and Villalpando made the All-Pacific Region team. Akiona at Colorado St. made the All- MWC 2nd team, hitting .342, leading her team with 8 HR’s, 13 2b and 33 rbi. Jaramillo batted .317 for Utah St. Three were playing for UH a year ago, Villalpando 2 years ago.

Padello might better fitted for safety or a hybrid position.

Anyway, since my last post was being moderated for a typo, would like to take the time to convey my condolences to Kekaula’s Ohana on their loss.

If Rod York says this player is really good, then he’s even better. Welcome to the Warriors.

don’t know how fast he is, on the videos looks like good speed. should convert him into a safety and blitz him as needed. Could be the second coming of someone like Carnell Lake.

islandman, your post begs the question, “Why did these players transfer?” I don’t remember about Villapondo, but the other three were starters for UH. And I just read that Rachel Lack will not be returning. Just hope this trend is an anomaly.

    islandman-

I did not know that Akiona transferred to Colorado State. Thanks.

Right now, I’m listening to an elimination game between the Bulldogs and CSF.

Nobody notices, or cares, that the Live Stats have both teams mixed up. I had to listen to the CSF radio guy, who sounds bored out of his mind, to figure out who is winning.

Big West( Fullerton) over MW (Fresno) in softball, beat them two times in the Regional.

    Morning Tsaikos!
In Orlando for vacation. Seen some “H” stickers on cars here. Here’s a link to the local paper. Has UH 121 out of 128:

DLM, thanks for the links. The first one I found engaging. The second one made me laugh. Rolo is a character.

H-Man, you’re welcome. It’s always good to read from an outsider’s point of view instead of through our rose colored glasses. Doesn’t diminish my enthusiasm for the team in any way. Go Warriors! As for Rolo’s tweet, I get a good chuckle every time I read it!!

Nice, liking the walkons of Tom and Padello. Use Padello like how we used Darryl McBride. An undersized DE/LB passrushing specialist.

hopefully he can become Hawaiis version of Eric Striker
