UH eyes the future

SUMMERLIN, NEV. —  The Warriors reportedly are interested in 10 Las Vegas-area football prospects. The coaches are scheduled to visit schools this week.

One of  the stops is expected to be Liberty High. Liberty bills itself as the “Ninth Island,” and its football team performs the haka before games.

The Warriors completed a 2-hour practice this morning at Palo Verde High. Because of the roster limit for road trips, several backup players were used on scout team. The most versatile was offensive tackle Brent Leonard, who played tight end and linebacker. Outside linebacker Vili Nauahi was used as a center.

Several of the assistant coaches decided to make the 4-mile walk from Palo Verde to the hotel after practice.

I’m not surprised that the coaches are heavily involved with recruiting during their Vegas stay. Given the ties between Vegas and Hawaii and the recruiting links between the coaches and Vegas high schools, this should be a great pipeline for UH. Tony Tuioti was a valuable aid in the decision process for several Vegas recruits last year and I’m sure that his contacts and reputation will help for years to come.

  9. Garret September 15, 2009 8:59 am

Here is the UH release for the UNLV game.

  10. Garret September 15, 2009 9:01 am

The more recruits the Warriors get from Vegas, the better the pipeline will be there. It doesn’t hurt that they have a good number of D-IA recruits and no BCS Conference team in the area. Also, UNLV has struggled for some time and if this season doesn’t go well their coaching staff needs to worry about their jobs–that instability must hurt their recruiting.

  11. Slugger September 15, 2009 9:02 am

ST ~ Do you know if the team will do the haka at the LV game, or are they still working on getting it down?

    Have a great day everyone.

Wonder what the ratio of Warrior to Rebel fans will be this weekend at the game.

I’m glad the casinos got stuck with so many packages. GREED KILLS. Anyway, at least 220 Tsaikos will be whooping it up together.

Watched about a quarter & a half of the replay against WSU last night on FSNW. The team look SOLID! Gonna have to let out all the built of frustration of being secluded all week. D is hitting hard, and the O-line looks great. Green is a fast dude, as is Bradley. ‘Nuff can’t be said about Salas. A win this week will give them so much confidence for the rest of the season.

  14. djmitcho September 15, 2009 9:10 am

Aloha Tsaikoland! Another day closer to the Warriors running the rebels out of their own stadium. After week one of the Blog Bowl FFB league, your winners this week were Pauoa Boy, Hawaiianbod, Homey, Committed Road Warrior and 808Chef. They are all 1-0. The rest of us have a goose egg in the W column. Hope everyone has a good one today!

May I ask a favor? Could someone make me a copy of the UNLV game if you have it on PPV this Saturday, please? It’s not going to be re-broadcast by KFVE.

    Mahalo nui loa!

  17. postmanke September 15, 2009 9:30 am

That Liberty program is up and coming with Hawaiian players in the Vegas area. Hawaii walk on Sage Nua played there, i was surprised he was not heavily recruited. I dont know if he still is, but former St Louis QB Joey Charles was an assistant there last year. Vegas is a great recruiting ground for UH. (for baseball as well)

Hopefully, this new injected pump in the offense can continue which I’m sure top prospects will want to be a part of. – I just love the coaching change!! Mack is a genius!!

confirming with K5 if there’s any delayed re-broadcast on game day
like they normally do for away games and repeat next day morning.
    will advise findings

  20. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 15, 2009 9:45 am

    Good morning all:

I’ve confirmed with the UH Athletics media office that the UNLV game will only be seen on PPV at 5 pm here in Hawai`i. It MAY be shown again on CSN channel later on; more important, however, is that there will be No, I repeat, NO free re-broadcast on K5 as of this writing.

This is particularly disturbing to us because we were planning to go to a near-2-UH sports bar to see the first half of the game before heading on up to the Stan Sheriff Center to see the Wahine play Pepperdine. We planned to get back home in time to watch/record the rebroadcast, but now that is not possible.

Therefore, to echo Slugger’s #16 – is anyone with PPV able to make a DVD for us to pick up on Sunday?

    Mahalo.

    Therefore, we’d like to echo

  21. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 15, 2009 9:48 am

    chopsueyboy,

I spoke to Dan Schmidt (sp?) this morning at KFVE. They are definitely not re-broadcasting the game in Hawai’i. PPV is the only access. I’m so sad. “The Mountain” (MTN) channel is broadcasting in the Mountain West only. KFVE could not get the rights to their film to re-broadcast here. So, PPV is the only way we in Hawai’i can view the game.

Thanks for putting the effort in to check.

RE: EH NO MAKE !- thank you for your observations, and much respect for supporting UH athletics. I think I recall that June Jones got his basic offense ideas from Mouse Davis, who worked closely with both June and Ron Lee. They are all intertwined (unless my memory faulters.) The Rolo playcalling was awesome against WSU, and the receivers seemed to be much more in synch with the QB. Could this be the affect of Ron Lee directly concentrating his efforts on the receivers? I would say yes! By the way, the sky looks clear and blue to me today with white puffy clouds floating around lazily in the mid-morning air.
Onward to Vegas and 3 & O! GO WARRIORS!!!

  37. lava September 15, 2009 10:42 am

    EH NO MAKE !,

You may be right, but what purpose is served by throwing Ron under the bus.

I agree with you the results are obvious. For me, that’s enough. The fact that a huge change was made after one game — a win — says a lot about Coach Mack’s dedication to being competitive, and giving the players every chance they need to make this a winning program.

I have been saying posting my dislikes with the Ron Lee play calling from the 3rd game of last year that he needed to be replaced. May I be as bold to suggest that he be replaced at wide receivers coach as well? Cant we find a title for him like “director of local recruiting” or something. If this offense keeps rolling I just see a problem down the road with Rolo being held back a bit if he and Lee is not on the same page. I would much rather see Rolo have full reign and total control of the offense. maybe i’m being a little harsh on Lee, but if the game has passed you, the game has passed you…

  49. Rich2176 September 15, 2009 11:04 am

702 – You would have died laughing in Fresno last year. I was in the car w/ ST and “Ferd” driving to dinner. JD, RK, and BC were following us. We must have driven 30 min in a complete circle. “Ferd” was positive the restaurant was “close”. Another 30 min of driving, and we finally find somewhere to eat about 15 miles from the hotel. “Ferd” swore he followed directions from the bell boy at the hotel. Needless to say, RK and BC had that look like “oh no, not AGAIN”.

  50. Dirty Commish September 15, 2009 11:04 am

    Hi Pomai!

    UHfan808- UH 32 : UNLV 28

    Thank you much!

  55. Garret September 15, 2009 11:14 am

The home team has the TV rights to the game, which is why playing the MWC is hard on fans from other conferences–the top MWC game goes to VS, which is not available on DirecTV and some cable systems, and other games are on mtn or CBS CS which are missing from many systems.

CBS CS has the right to show replays of the game anytime they want, so I’m not surprised that K5 doesn’t get to show a replay. UH doesn’t even get any of that TV money that is going to UNLV from their TV deal. This is one thing to consider when it is suggested that UH play at UNLV every year. UNLV gets the ticket revenue (aside from the $10 surcharge UH sold for a small amount of tickets), the concession revenue, the TV revenue, and Las Vegas gets the revenue from all the people going to their city for the game.

Still, this is better than playing at Washington State…they are so low on the pecking order for Pac-10 TV games that it was almost impossible to see the game outside of PPV in Hawaii and Fox sports in Washington. Even the multisport packages that normally allow others to see all college games on the Fox Sports channels were blacked out (for the first time that I’d ever heard of).

  56. al September 15, 2009 11:14 am

i thought that mike wadsworth played well on special teams. he is like a heat seeking missile out there. too bad he goes on a mission next year.

  57. J-Dog September 15, 2009 11:15 am

The playcalling debacles started @ Florida in my opinion. We started getting away from what got us to be sucessful…and that’s throwing the ball all day everyday. The 2008 offense seemed much more deliberate in trying to establish a running game, and the passing game (and offensive stats as a whole) suffered.

The “we’re gonna run more and be more balanced” thing didn’t work out. Look at how quickly they abandoned the QB under-center experiment after spending a great amount of time working on it in the Spring of ’08.

I definitely agree that the playcalling this past weekend was much more spreadout and wide open. For a moment, I thought coach jones was still at UH.

    Howzit Everybody,

You know what I say about this whole playcalling, OC, wide receiver coach thing is, who the heck cares. Just as long as we are winning games and the coaches are on the same page. I say, give it a rest.

I guess this the only thing to talk about when your team goes 2-0 and looking to go 3-0 going into Ruston. Heh if I was this much of a cynic then I would probably be speaking the same language as some of our posters but you know what life is way to short to be grumbling about every little thing that bothers you. Like I said before don’t jump down anyones throat just yet. Heh under Mack we are 9-7 beginning his second year. It could be a lot worse. Just enjoy the ride.

You know going back to last year.

Yes the offense was not the same as years past with June Jones slingshot offense but the offense probably would not have been the same with June Jones here anyway. We had new players in almost every position. What did everyone really expect from these guys. Yes these kids our recruit with the presumption that they are ready for the big time but in most cases this is not true. So I ask again what did everyone really expect from these guys.

Last year we were forced to be more balanced and throw in a running game so that it would take the strain off of the O-line and give time for the QB’s to learn the offense. Of course this did not work according to plan but is was not for a lack of trying.

I guess what I’m trying to say is the past is the past. Do not dwell on something that is already over. As we have seen within the past two games, some of our concerns from last year have been fixed but there is still a lot that needs to done before we become an elite mid-major. This will not happen in just two years. It might not even happen in three years but I know that it will happen. The framework is being put in place for a solid program to be built. What June Jones left us was just a blue print of things to come. What Mack is doing is putting it into action and I am sure we will see these fruit of labor coming to fruition soon. Like I said just enjoy the ride.

Hi SumTinWong — long time no see!

Reminded me of the last days of the Sugar Bowl ticket scramble that Garret was coordinating at the end. We needed tickets. I was being cc’d on most emails so saw the developments… Iwonderwhytheyhate came out of nowhere and said he could get 4 tickets–but being a student (back then), he did not have the money. SumTinWong offered to meet Iwonderwhytheyhate me at the box office and pay for the tickets that eventually got to Garret for distribution. No one had ever met each other before at the time. So their names stand out in my memory… 🙂

By the way before I’m off,
just got this from Sun Coast for those interested.

7X floor wide points on Fri, Sat. & Sun.
Plus 2 for 1 buffet coupon will be in LV Review Journal on Fri paper.

Can you imagine if the team got hold of coupons and had their
Fri nite meal at the buffet ?????

Rich2176 ~ My Tickets taken care of. See you in LV. WM has 3 left for sale if you know of anyone needing tickets for the Tsaiko section.

Just heard from Wafan. He made one last ditch effort to spring djmitcho. 4 letter word beginning with ‘W’ got in the way. Grrr…

  80. madeinhawaii September 15, 2009 12:05 pm

Can’t believe people are still harping on the Coach for last year’s playing style. You do what you gotta do. If you don’t have the personnel to run one style to a ‘T’, you run another. That’s what any good coach would do. You play with whatever cards are dealt you. You don’t go for a straight if you have two pairs in your hand. And you don’t bet the house on an Ace, high. Still a great coach would get you where you needed to get to, using whatever ‘strategy’ his hand had forced him to play. Personally, I think getting our ‘left over’ Warriors to a bowl game last season was pretty outstanding.

AND, from the looks of the recruits that are playing today, RnS was obviously ALWAYS on McMackin’s mind. Not only did he recruit a few outstanding receivers and a running back… he reloaded on defense AND inspired all his players to really work out over the off season and work on their playbook understanding.

We may not be up to beating Florida yet.. but we’re a long way from where we were last season and the foundation (underclassmen, redshirts and grayshirts) is looking pretty darn good. The present looks good and the future looks promising. I like that.

  81. J-Dog September 15, 2009 12:18 pm

Kekoa – glad it worked out. Tell wafan to tell DJMitchO to tell “w” he won’t have to pay for a hotel. I’ve got an extra room booked at Harrah’s til Monday.

There is ONE and ONLY ONE ticket remaining from my allotment. I accidentally sent Ronnie 10 instead of 9.

    I think there may be a few others available – w-mojo (3), djmitcho (1)…

Heard from RainbowCliff, and he indicated he may drive up if there were seats, so let’s make this work!!

Just go to the box that asks where you want 50,000 books to be sent, find Hawaii and click. AND YES, YOU ONLY HAVE TO CLICK ON *WHERE DO YOU WANT THE BOOKS TO GO….ITS THE ONLY REQUIRED FIELD.

    I’ve included the link: http://booksforkids.firstbook.org/whatbook/about.php

Come on Tsaikos – make like it was voting for Jasmine Trias!!!

I’m bring my laptop/notebook so I can vote from Las Vegas!

    GO WARRIORS!

My chance for the soap box. You know, there’s a lot of smart guys on this blog. Lots of analysts who knows what’s wrong with the coaches and players. Me, I’m just a Warrior supporter. I put money on UH whether tey’re the favorite or underdog. If they win big…terrific! If they win by small margin…terrific! If they lose but played a good game…terrific! My wife and I went to New Orleans (big bucks) like many other warrior supporters. We lost big…but we were there to support them. I just enjoy watching our team…without analyzing what went wrong…cause I’m not that smart. I’m a Na Koa member and make my donations…no questions asked. Go Warriors!!! Kick some Butts!!! Running Rebels run with tail between their legs!!!

A drum & bugle or drumline with horns…anything to light the fire!

  119. hapahaoleboy September 15, 2009 1:47 pm

The problem with the offense really has just been that we got spoiled. We had one of the..check that…two of the greatest college football offensive minds on the UH coaching staff – Junes Jones and Mouse Davis – in recent years. There’s no getting around that it’s a big step down from June/Mouse to Ron/Rolo.

June was not only a great mid-game adjuster, his offense was perfect for a team like UH – a school that will never have the caliber of athlete that a USC, Florida or Oklahoma will get. We were just spoiled by having the NFL-level mind of June and now having Ron Lee. Mack’s a great defensive coach, but probably clueless on the real intricacies of June’s run-and-shoot that we got used to.

I think that Rolo’s experience playing successfully in June’s offense will be a major part of his success in coaching it vs. Ron. There’s something to be said for actually being on the field and executing it, as opposed to watching and analyzing it as Ron has. So I do believe Rolo will come closer to matching the offense June had going.

Just my two cents…and I hope they kill it this weekend…Go Warriors!

  131. madeinhawaii September 15, 2009 2:11 pm

    hapahaoleboy,

I still must defer my opinion on the Ron Lee and Rolo combination vs June Jones and McKnight. Remember, Ron was JJ’s receiving corps coach. JJ’s success may have very well benefited considerably by Ron’s ability to clearly understand and translate what JJ was envisioning.

Last season, Ron and McMackin combined their talents and brought our Warriors to a bowl game. We lost a couple that we shouldn’t have and won a couple that we weren’t supposed to. But the Warriors did it with 2 returning offensive starters. JJ and McKnight fared far worse even with B. Mitchell as QB.

This year, both teams are off to a 2-0 start. It’s arguable who has played tougher teams to start.

Often, I have found that genius isn’t the leader, him/herself, but more in the people s/he surrounds him/herself with.

So, we shall see, we shall see.

Don Weir ~ Thanks again for the additional info. There seems to be a huge turnout of expat local people these days (winning does that). Any musical encouragement to cheer the team on works! I think it’ll be worth the effort for the SJS game.

I’m working with Pomai right now on another project for the team. It should be something we can build on when we all return from Vegas. It’s actually something Brian K. started and we can help finish.

    d1…

They (alumni cheerleaders) do the posturing .. the two – three in the middle do the real flips and pyramid. Who knows? Maybe do a graceful hula or two during half time.

AND if they can bring family .. friends… relatives… other estranged, alumni
to the games to cheer on the Warriors/Bows/Wahine… it’s all good.

BUT, I bet a lot of alumni band members might want to relive the moments just for free parking and tickets (okay maybe some will need lodging too).

  163. Garret September 15, 2009 2:58 pm

HF is apparently one of the candidates for UNLV’s Athletic Director position. For UNLV’s sake, I’m glad that they heard how he did at UH. However, he apparently is on good terms with UNLV’s President, so maybe he’ll be able to use that connection to get the job…

I’ve heard that Herman Frazier, the former Hawaii athletic director whom current UNLV president Dr. Neal Smatresk knows, is a possibility. But, God, I hear that he was terrible.

HF … never has so little been done with so much by any one individual in UH athletics… as such, I hereby nominate HF for the first ever… “Dobelle Award.”

At least his exit brought to light a lot of shortcomings in the accounting practices and administration of UH and the Athletics Department. Hopefully, there will be greater transparency in the future.

  174. Ralph September 15, 2009 3:28 pm

For Kazz and other vb fans, the recruit at the Stanford game is believed to be 6’3 Michelle Waber out of Eisnore, Ca and 951 Elite club. same-o as Alexis Forsythe. UH has 4 scholarships for 2010 with 3 verbals to date. Does this mean that the two transfers this year are already on scholarship with Tuaniga. Houston, Keefe and Thomas graduated last year, that would account for all three. Shoji mentioned that he might save a scholarship so that he can control the number of scholarships turn over each year-is three the magic number?

  175. Ralph September 15, 2009 3:33 pm

  177. 702WarriorNation September 15, 2009 3:37 pm

    mih,
Do you think if a short list, ok, a loooonnnnnggggg list of HF lack
of accomplishments at UH should be listed on the article’s remarks.
If he became AD at UNLV, I bet the first action he’ll direct to his staff,
if he gets around to doing it will be to cancel all FB contracts with UH.
With UNLV and the State of Nevada’s financial problems especially in
its education budget, I wouldn’t want to have him here being the prime
example of what a “Procrastinator” looks like. Not a good example to the students.
Wonder why the poster who googled HF didn’t mentioned HF’s prior lack of accomplishments prior to UH?

  178. 702WarriorNation September 15, 2009 3:42 pm

Hope if ST needs to go to emergency, he doesn’t go to UMC.
Other better alternatives are available- unless his H/Ins. (wasn’t it Summerlin)doesn’t allow him to go elsewhere.
Summerlin or Mountain View would be my preferred hospital based on
    my limited contact at each.

you hit it on the head. so what that they made a change! they won and it looks to be a more productive move. people need to relax. btw, coach mack didn’t need to inform the media of the change in the 1st place. guy shows some professional courtesy and a few degenerates take the opportunity to throw crap at the program.

the best thing about rolo’s play calling, was the amount of that lame shuffle pass plays which was 1. if jj was calling the game, he would have called for the shuffle about 12-15 times.

against wsu, i thought i saw brian smith on the sidelines…

hopefully alexander will be able to hit the slots quickly so he doesn’t have to deal with the pass rush. doubt if unlv is dumb enough to rush only 3. it’ll be a nice romp if they do though.

  181. 702WarriorNation September 15, 2009 4:10 pm

Tressel said he has received critical e-mails, but said the fans’ poison makes him feel sorry for them.

“When I read some of them I feel terrible for them because there’s no way they’re happy,” he said. “They’ve got to be some of the most unhappy people in the world, and I feel bad because we just made them less happy, and I hate to be a part of making someone less happy. I mean, they’re already miserable.”

Wonder if his boss is keeping a tight rein on him esp. his travel and
    expense accts.

  185. Garret September 15, 2009 4:15 pm

I agree that HF had problems with his Alabama-Birmingham Athletic Director record before UH, but that obviously didn’t stop UH from hiring him. With his track record at both spots, I’d really hate it for UNLV to hire him. Having a strong program at UNLV is good for UH given the ties between the two schools. And what if HF tries to dump the UH games and schedule Temple for UNLV?

  186. hapahaoleboy September 15, 2009 4:15 pm

    noboda yu #181

I belive it’s actually a “shovel” pass. And the reason Rolo didn’t run many, is proabably because WSU had no pressure on Alexander. The shovel pass is a great way to counter a hard rush on the QB. If the O-line keeps the D-line in check and gives Alexander a great pocket, there’s no need for too many shovel passes. It’s just like a screen play when you have a QB under center. It’s not like JJ called them because he loved the name of the play, it’s that he used it to counter the fact that our O-line would constantly get beat. It helps alleviate pressure on the QB. The lack of the shovel pass against WSU is more a testament to a solid outing by our O-line than a difference in play-calling preference between Rolo and JJ.

  187. 702WarriorNation September 15, 2009 4:17 pm

    Good point Garret.
Hope work is settling down so that you don’t need to work while family is here.

    hapahaoleboy-

The lack of the shovel pass against WSU is more a testament to a solid outing by our O-line than a difference in play-calling preference between Rolo and JJ.

I didn’t see the game, only listened on espn 1420.
Was it also a lack of talent on WSU d/line to apply pressure on QB?
I believe after the game with UNLV, we’ll know if our O/L is in improvement mode since their D/L will be pressuring a lot with some good linebackers play too.
Also concern with their tall wide reciever and running backs. They have some speed too, but I believe we’ll be able to take care.

    702WarriorNation,

Work is pretty calm right now, just trying to get some computer simulations done while waiting to hear about the other proposals. NSF finalized the review of the first of the proposals (the official release is out now) and they started reviewing the second of 3 that we submitted. The Navy contract (the one that was supposed to start in January) should be finally done this week.

I actually get to take the entire weekend off while we’re in Vegas! This will be the first time in a long time that I don’t have to work while on a family trip. It will be great to see you and your wife this weekend.

    702WarriorNation

Yes…the boys will definitely face a bigger test this week. I guess it was hard to tell if it was more improved play by our O-line or a weak performance from WSU. Hopefully, it was more the prior than the latter. I’m curious to see how much attention Salas gets this week from their D after two great outings in a row. That might help keep them from sending too many LBs at Alexander, knowing that Salas could come across the middle every play from the slot.

  197. Garret September 15, 2009 5:10 pm

The MWC TV contract is really bad for their fans. Nevada is playing at Colorado State this weekend and it will not be televised anywhere! The mtn network decided to not show the game and they will not let it be shown anywhere else!

The Nevada-Colorado State football game Saturday will not be televised — in Northern Nevada or anywhere else — because Nevada’s request to do so was denied, Nevada spokesman Chad Hartley said.

The Mtn. decided not to pick up the game, scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff (Pacific time). The only game The Mtn. is televising Saturday is Hawaii at UNLV at 8 p.m.

  198. Garret September 15, 2009 5:12 pm

K5 could not be given the right to show a replay of the game even if the mtn network wanted to let them…local TV stations are *not* allowed to show the games due to the MWC’s TV contract. At least fans in Hawaii have PPV, Nevada fans do not even have that option.

Hayne Ellis, the communications manager for The Mtn., said the network is unable to grant Nevada the rights to televise Saturday’s game at Colorado State.

“Our major distribution agreement precludes us from allowing any local television telecasts,” Ellis said in a message left on my voicemail this afternoon. “We wouldn’t be able to grant permission even if we wanted to because of those distribution agreements.”

The Mtn., which has exclusive rights to home games within the Mountain West Conference, chose not to televise Saturday’s game. In a previous blog today, Nevada spokesman Chad Hartley said that the University of Nevada Sports Network had requested to televise the game.

Last couple of idle thoughts from Seatown before catching my 7:20 am flight tomorrow morning .

The Warriors are getting really good publicity out of this victory. The game was shown again last night at about 9:00 pm. on FSN. Yesterday’s Seattle Post had a blurb about how Hawaii averaged 9.9 yards per play so who cares about 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Tonight Wazzu announced that Lopina has been benched in favor of Lobestahl or whatever the QB’s name is and/or a true frosh that Wazzu planned to redshirt. The local news keeps showing clips of Warrior plays every time they talk about Wazzu’s problems. Also, great bragging rights for the local WA kids like Wright-Jackson, Brown, etc. Awesome.

  200. WarriorMojo September 15, 2009 5:22 pm

I agree with the praise being heaped upon our younger players on D, but one kid that deserves recognition is Geordan Hanohano. I agree with Big Hilo that he did a great job, including deflecting a pass. Our defense is going to DOMINATE in years to come.

We need to plan to get some band members on the road. San Jose might be a good choice.
Gwen may be able to help schedule band but we will need to get plane reservations and hotel rooms set up via Panda (unless one of us works for a hotel chain and/or airline).
Let me know if there is enough demand and if we want to work on this to make it happen.
Na Koa can help with logistics with UH.

Not sure if this was suggested earlier, but perhaps a cost effective way to do this is to invite UH marching band alumni in the area to join in, much like how the UH cheerleaders did last Saturday. If course, not sure how “rusty” they may be, but I’m sure they can remember “Co-Ed”, “Hawaii Five O”, and “Fight For Old Hawaii” pretty well!

Shannon Dresser is listed as a senior cross country runner.

Her “baton twirling” eligibility confuses me. I believe ST said her UH schollie is through the marching band so I dunno how that works…

I guess THIS athletic fall season is her last with UH as the baton twirler?

Well, been saying it since 2005, “good luck to the next baton twirler”!

the uh warrior fans are like salmon, each day more and more are showing up in vegas and game night will be a doozer. while our governor and legislators are trying to figure how to get more money, they let 20,000 kamaainas leave hi for the game and they will contribute to the vegas community over $5 million for this game. gambling is bad for hi, but excellent for vegas. go figure that out!!!!

  230. bighilofan2 September 15, 2009 6:13 pm

    Vili

he may not be da mascot

but i loved his smile at the CAU game

he was pretty happy with this 12 year old kid standing at the bottom of orange CC right next to the tunnel. da kid was yelling chuuuuuuuuuuuuu
    heeeeeeeeeeeeeaahhhhhhhh as loud as Vili.

da kid was amazing, like Charice P. 😀

    mih,
I’m for the warriors but i respect jj alot. to compare the two schools is like apples and oranges. hawaii has been built into a successful program and is looking to reload after the sugar bowl. most of the recruits came because of the success of hawaii in 2007. jj’s school has been losing for over 20 years and he’s trying to rebuild it with not much talent from earlier years, and trying to convince recruits to play for a losing school. i give him credit for being 2-0 while having to deal with that.

I guess McMackin just said what I wanted to, Ron Lee was voted one of the top 5 receiver coaches in the NCAA. Combine that with JJ and McMackin and you have explosive power and defense.

We have two of the 1,2,3 punch.

And that ain’t bad at all.

    al,

Thanks for the vids. Like I said before, “I know nothing”, but what I’ve seen of Dunnachie makes me think he can make a 50 yd. field goal. Does a field goal actually have to touch the ground? Wait, wait, don’t tell me…I’ll go look it up in the fb dictionary W-Doc printed for me. If not there, I’ll ask again.

  250. bighilofan2 September 15, 2009 7:36 pm

Hey Rich2176, i’ll be flying in to Vegas on sat, i still need a ticket, would love to sit along side the tsaiko’s. If you can get 2 from WarriorMojo, i’ll buy the extra one from you. Let me know, if can, good, if no can, thats ok too, i’ll get one when i get there.

  256. alnbama September 15, 2009 7:45 pm

alnbama – if the stars line up properly, Ronnie will have one extra ticket. I sent her 10 instead of 9. (Note to self – no green bottles when distributing Warrior Tix.). If warriormojo or BHF2 can take care of RainbowCliff, that would be great. Also, djmitcho has a ticket. He’d need to FedEx it since tomorrow is already Wed. Everything will work out….

The Navy’s new amphibious assault ship Makin Island uses a hybrid electric kind of like what is used in cars. The electric motor is used at low speeds and the engine only needs to be used during the 25% of the time that the ship moves at high speeds. Not only is this a great way to reduce emissions, but it reduces our military’s dependence on foreign oil and the Navy predicts it will save $250 million in fuel costs!

Globs of human fat removed during liposuction are being called “liquid gold” because that fat contains versatile cells that are more quickly and easily converted to stem cells than the skin cells most often used by researchers. It takes 3+ weeks to grow skin cells in the lab before they can be reprogrammed, but liposuction leftovers are ready to be used right away, plus liposuction leftovers do not need mouse-derived “feeder cells” that current skin cells require.

The world’s first full-scale floating wind turbine (capacity of 2.3 megawatts) was inaugurated in Norway. They will study it over the next two years to figure out how to reduce costs so that they can commercialize floating wind power. Hawaii would be an *excellent* target market for this type of green power.

Article about why the kickoff time changed for Saturday’s game.

Coming off a late-night loss to Oregon State, Sanford’s UNLV Rebels are preparing for another 8 p.m. home kickoff against Hawaii on Saturday.

“The game this last Saturday … that was way ahead of time, basically determined for us because it was a CBS College Sports game,” Sanford said during the Mountain West Conference weekly coaches teleconference. “The one this week originally was a 7 o’clock, and the University of Hawaii asked for it to be moved to 8. We agreed to that because it’s a positive for us to be televised in Hawaii because we recruit Hawaii.”

Listening to the the Coaches Show a caller calls in and ask Coach Mack if the Warrior practices are open to the public.

“No practices are closed,” Coach Mack says. “We’re putting in some new offensive packages and we don’t want the UNLV coaches to see this.”

When I heard this it makes perfect sense. High five to the coach for sound thinking.

Even on this message board I’ve read where posters are guarded in releasing information as to what they see in practices at Manoa. Again, this makes perfect sense as you don’t want to tip off any information to the Warrior’s opponent.

Later in the show on the subject of the punter:

Coach says, “We’ll have our punter doing rugby-style punting for the UNLV game.”

    Huh? Huh?

Yep that was my reaction. And I actually cringed when I heard this. I realize that Coach Mack, in his over exuberance about the punter, may have let this information slip out …but allowing the enemy (UNLV) to hear this is not very savvy at all IMO. Football coaches, in general, try to gain the edge. Coach Mack had one. And he could have surprised the UNLV team with the punter sprinting out of the pocket and doing the rugby-style punting…but he had to spill the beans, which now allows the UNLV special team’s coach time to prepare for this. Oh well, at least the practices were closed.

    hey gang!

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen or talk to you guys. Yeah, life is pretty busy with two boys in diapers. With one boy in diaper last year we managed to get season tickets, but it’s too difficult this year. So, it’s PPV for now and maybe the next two yrs or so. I would invite u guys over and bust out the grill, but the house is a mess and no time.

    StevenM and bighilofan2 – I remember u guys.

LizKauai – u da lady with the awesome voice? Sent chills down my spine wen u sing Hawaii Ponoi (?) in New Orleans. Or was that someone else?

wafan — no cost. We record’em b/c we no can sit and watch from beginning to end.

BTW, I forgot my sumtinwong email .. was it yahoo? Just shoot SteveM an email and if he can kindly pass it to my real yahoo acct. and we can work something out.

  291. Slugger September 15, 2009 10:01 pm

    royvic,

I don’t know anything about rugby style kicking, but Alex can drop kick a ball pretty high. I don’t think we’ll ever see him kick as high as he can in a game setting. Punts during a game have to be strategically placed at specific yardage.

What is the difference between a football kick & a rugby kick?
    Thanks.

  292. royvic September 15, 2009 10:06 pm

    292

rugby style punting gives the punter the freedom to run before punting the ball

the boise punter a few years ago did this

he would take the snap and then sprint to either side out of the pocket before either punting the ball, running or throwing the ball for a first down.

  293. Lopaka43 September 15, 2009 10:11 pm

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana!!

Enjoying lurking and reading the banter for the most part. Several trolls passed through to unload their usual load of blame, character assassination, and attitude. Apparently, they mistake the four or five F’s for fleas!!

I’ve learned to skip right past these imposters who act as though they are smarter than highly successful coaches with college and NFL backgrounds. And the truest test to ask: Have you ever seen one of these guys at a tailgate, cattle call, or Tsaiko get together? I’ve seen plenty invitations for them to show up, but nothing..

Anyway, for those who want to diss Ron Lee and the role he has played in our success with the Run and Shoot, he has been successfully coaching Run and Shoot for a long time. The reason that Mack say Ron Lee will always be my offensive coordinator is that he and Mack ran the run and shoot when Mack got his first college head coaching job in Oregon, and they set national records for their level.

This team is a team, not just of players but of players and coaches. They are learning how to work together at both levels, and they show signs of becoming a very smart and effective group. I see the coaches as being a great blend of old and young guys who have great spirit. That doesn’t mean that they won’t make mistakes or that their schemes won’t ever fail. But they have shown great ability to learn and adapt defeats and to build the potential for even greater things in the future.

    Imua Warriors!!

never thought I’d actually be looking forward to a road game,

but i truly am looking forward to us playing UNLV Sat.

    Go Warriors!!!

  301. Kekoa September 15, 2009 10:35 pm

Lopaka ~ Was great to see you and your boss at Genji’s Saturday. Just like our sometimes flawless Tsaiko cheering, the team is learning to work well together. When they should happen to falter, adjustments are made, and they finish strong.

The proof will be when we get together with bhf2 and follow his cheer leading example. Thank goodness BG will be there to help!

Interpretation may be a slight problem with those unaccustomed to his fractured linguistic skills. Don Weir will prolly rush the cheerleaders to San Jose WITH the band after he witnesses braddah’s enthusiastic ooutbursts.

    Imua Warriors!

  302. Slugger September 15, 2009 10:37 pm

    royvic,

So, couldn’t Dunnachie run before kicking the ball? If the protection is collapsing and he’s truly accurate as advertised as a rugby kicker, he could move & kick the ball. Doesn’t seem to be against the rules if someone has already kicked in that fashion. Wonder how accurate he is kicking on the run?

OH, he did show us a rugby kick at the Wahine football clinic! MzLiz, or gmahoney, do you remember that? It was the end of our session with the special teams group.

  303. jm2375 September 15, 2009 10:38 pm

…I know we scrapped the Wht/Blk/Silver uni’s but did anyone else notice that Monday Night Football game between the Raiders/Chargers? Looks like the Raiders stole a page out of JJ’s book, with the White Jerseys w/Silver #’s… Remember the one’s that the commentators for the ’05 UH @ McChicken St. game were complaining couldn’t see the jersey #’s?

  311. TYaiea September 15, 2009 11:31 pm

Finally caught up reading all the posts. WarriorMojo, great pixs! To those that’s leaving pretty soon to vegas. Malama Pono. We’ll all be there on Saturday to cheer our young Warriors. IMUA!!! Gotta go sleep now. Aloha….

  312. Slugger September 15, 2009 11:32 pm

I think one of the TV commentators said the same thing about the disappearing numbers on the Raiders’ jerseys.

  314. Ralph September 15, 2009 11:36 pm

The UH Pep Band would be the one to send on the road, but they are a regular presence at Wahine volleyball matches plus men’s basketball and volleyball.

The Wahine play New Mexico State here on October 17 which is the same day the Warriors play at Idaho so that wouldn’t work. However, the Wahine will be in Utah while the Warriors will be playing in San Jose on November 14.

Men’s basketball starts on October 30 against UH-Hilo followed by a game with BYU-H on November 4. Home games scheduled: November 13, Southern Utah; November 15, McNeese State; November 16, Northern Colorado. That would definitely create a problem with sending the Pep Band and cheerleaders to San Jose.

However, just like the Pep Band is only 25 or so musicians compared to the big Marching Band, so too is the cheerleading squad much smaller for all the court sports. Let’s do some creative thinking here.

The Men’s volleyball schedule is not yet posted on the UH website.

Still, it would be worthwhile to try to put something together for the November 14 San Jose State game. If there’s any interest in holding a special event as opposed to asking for contributions like we did for the equipment fund, then I’d be glad to help plan, coordinate, and carry it out. What I’d suggest would raise about $3000 in three hours

Busy day tomorrow so I’m off to bed – got to deal with sharks and homeless folks.

    GO WARRIORS!!! GO WAHINE!!!

The MWC has Versus and MTN telecast which can be viewed on a national scale. I’m viewing a MTN telecast right now where various head coaches are being interviewed regarding their perspective teams, etc.
Now that’s what you call getting a leg up on recruiting prospects along with the BCS conferences who have their own outlets for national exposure.

Just wondering if the WAC ever explored this scenario before as well??
Garret, what say you??? my opinion is that this avenue should be a must for the WAC, or am I missing something besides the co$t???

  340. Kekoa (iPhone) September 16, 2009 5:49 am

Ralph ~ Da former Oakland Raider’s is still an official NFL team? Like da PGA players who don’t do well, don’t they have to go back to *Q* school?

I cudda sworn I heard Al Davis grumble to Mayor Moonbeam Jerry Brown about dat last month.

  341. mctruck September 16, 2009 5:58 am

I watched a replay of the UNLV/OSU game from last week and actually, the Rebs never came to life until the 4th, and even at that, it was a lot of desperation plays and good breaks. I think OSU really went to sleep on defense…seems like they thought the game was in the bag, so to speak, they slacked-off towards the end. If not for that last precious moments and that field goal, the Rebs would have pulled-off an upset win.

So, the Warriors need to play four full quarters and be focused…got my fingers crossed just in case, but I feel very confident UH will come away with a big, “W.”

  342. d1島 September 16, 2009 6:12 am

UH better not be thinking too much into the future. WASU outplayed them in the second half of last week’s game when Mack thought it was a wash out.

They need to concentrate on business at hand. Start looking at the Navy and Wisconsin films first. Figure the Fresno and Boise State games are losses and just make sure we have a winning season.

    BOBMOB,

Ho easy buddy. I will agree with you that the Boise State game will be a very tough one for the boyz and they might come up losers but you have to remember that the game is at home and anything can happen. With regards to Fresno State. You gotta be kidding me. Fresno an automatic lose. Wow you must be smoking something really good. Fresno has not beat us home or away for the past 5 years at least. I think after watching them this past Saturday, Fresno has another tough team but not a team that Hawaii can not beat. It will be a tough game like it always has been between these teams but to say it is an automatic win for Fresno is craziness.

  359. Kekoa (iPhone) September 16, 2009 7:20 am

Doing some last minute stuff. Da plane leaves at 2:35 PM. Leavin’ da keys to da ceded lands to officer Coloma. (Cousin Buddy will be his enforcer). Da ‘flag’ is packed Aunty Liz!

Been really excited about this trip for the past few days. The anticipation of seeing the lads go off on UNLV is exhilarating! I’m thinking that if they keep better care of da ‘rock’ – they will take a huge step forward in improving their steam rolling offense!

    Win Warriors!

  360. Maverick September 16, 2009 7:25 am

    referring to the post(s) above.

Dag nab it, Hawaii is gonna blow the panties off Boise and Fresno!
Both home games and 100% sellout capacity.
Get your noise maker ready and fine tuned to maximum decibal levels.
Maybe a coqui frog whistle can be created. That would bug the heck out of those visitors.

  364. Pomai September 16, 2009 8:06 am

A couple of things, first I disagree with Bobmob there is no reason that we should not win those games other than we beat ourselves.

Second thing is about the TV stuff, who is selling what to who? It seems like UH needs to take a course in economics, we have a product that people want so since when does the buyer dictate the price the seller should charge? I think that UH and the WAC need to step back an look at the TV deal and readjust their thinking, we are worth a lot more than what they are paying, also seeing how it is our(UH) game we(UH) should have the exclusive rights to the broadcasting of any replay or selling of the game to the fans.

  365. Slugger September 16, 2009 8:08 am

    W-Doc,

    Re: UH Pep Band

The Pep Band members are not static. Band members take turns playing at games. So, you could have a group going to an on-campus game & send another unit to an away football game. Gwen would have to determine who will be the backup conductor for the other pep band. Comes down to cost; can they afford it? Do we know how much it costs to send the Pep Band to an away game? Extra baggage fees for the instruments; or maybe someone could arrange for loaners. It’s a thought.

  366. Maverick September 16, 2009 8:11 am

    Pomai –
exact-a-mundo on your thoughts with the tv rights.
When the deal was secured with Oceanic/K5/UH, this exclusive agreement bounced out the hawaiiantel com users ( Which is our only source of land line use in the islands). But, was allowed to broadcast web games to anyone. That was the best deal going once they beefed up their servers to handle the traffic.
It’s my feeling that UH went backwards with this exclusive deal. Bad marketing sense.

This morning I’m dying my hair so I decided to read todays blog. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on. Nice to see the old timers and I’m really jealous that you are all up there in Vegas!! I would love to go.
But more important….It’s here on this blog that I learned that Steve is not feeling good? He didn’t tell me anything…in fact, everytime he called me, I usually have the baby in my hand and she’s crying so I tell him “What? I can’t hear you…she’s crying. Call back.”
So poor thing…I think he gave up. I better text him now.
    Have a happy day everyone!!

OLDIE: I was going to set up the PPV for Saturday and none of the PPV channels showed up. Does Oceanic wait till Friday or Saturday to put it on?
If so, I’m depending on you!!!

it’s a coin toss. that’s the beauty of it all. maybe coach is just saying that. maybe he just got you like he hopes he gets the UNLV coaches. something to prepare for………for nothing? gamesmanship? keep them guessing? how do we know what it really means until the final whistle blows? i guess coach mack is still in your oratory doghouse. on the flip side…it may not be what it seems as there are…three sides…to every coin and we don’t know the result until it lands.

    Good Morning Wena!

No worries, we’ll be up there in a few hours to get him back up to full operational condition.

Take care of that little papoose. *Mia* must be exercising her lungs so she can sing like her grandpa!…LOUD!

#363- I know we did, i was there too. But we didn’t play well. The game was closer than what the final score indicated. no need get mad, we just making predictions. i like hawaii win too, but somebody got to put in one realistic prediction. that’s mine just based on past performances in vegas. if i’m wrong, i’m happy. if i’m right. i win the guessing game.
