UH games to be played today; football practice/social canceled

All of today’s UH sporting events — volleyball, baseball and softball — will be played, UH officials announced today. The box office opens at 11 a.m.

But the Warrior football team has canceled this afternoon’s spring practice (scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and will postpone tonight’s talk-story social with local coaches, associate head coach Rich Miano annnounced.

No makeup date has been set for the social. (Any suggestions on what to do with all of the refreshments that were ordered?)

The Warriors will practice tomorrow morning starting at 8 a.m.

Heard of the warning listening to baseball. Got home and watched the events unfold on tv.

Prayers for the women on the TWCPE softball team here for some games. Played a spirited game last night. Will be tough to concentrate on games.

Congratulations to a former Warrior coach for this honor from ESPN. I think that Adrian Klemm will soon make this list–Klemm was the only coach from C-USA/WAC/MWC/SB/MAC to make the top recruiter list by rivals.

He’s regarded as one of the best recruiters in the nation – ESPN rank him in their top 20 and is the only non-BCS coach to appear.

Interesting to see that Utah State’s QB might be looked at for WR by Miami.

Dolphins scouts were also on hand for the Utah State pro day where 12 players worked out. They were in close attendance as three year starting QB Diondre Borel reeled off a pair of sub 4.5 forties and worked out as a wide receiver, also fielding kicks and punts. They put long-snapper Pat Scales through his paces as well.

    http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports/columnists/hyde/blog/2011/03/_draft_winds_post.html

  27. Garret March 11, 2011 9:56 am

You would think that *Salas* and *Pilares* (who played the same position as Bess at UH) would be the ones benefiting from Bess’ success with Miami, not a wideout (completely different position) from another school…but maybe NFL scouts don’t think that way?

The Dolphins coaches are coming up here to see him field punts before the draft. The good thing with Al with regards to Miami is that he’s helped because of Davone Bess and because Davone’s done such a great job for that organisation, he’s such a great player for Miami. And you know the story; he didn’t run well, ran a 4.68 but he worked hard, he got into the Dolphins camp and he’s now become very important to them. Teams know that they’re going to get a player who will always compete, always work hard the way Davone did.

I know that a lot of UH fans, here and on other sites, use channelsurfing to watch UH games. The operator of channelsurfing will be in jail for quite some time now.

When the US government decides to take down a website offering access to free TV streams over the Internet, it doesn’t mess around. Newly unsealed court documents show that Brian McCarthy, the 32-year old alleged operator of Channelsurfing.net, got the complete treatment—investigators dug into his domain name registrar, his ISP, his Gmail account, his ad brokers, and the Texas driver’s license database. They even sent a surveillance team to the Deer Park, Texas home where McCarthy lived with his parents.

McCarthy could face up to five years in prison based on the single charge he currently faces.

We left The Les last night just after the 9th inning debacle – by the time we got to the bus stop and powered up the iPhone, we were able to get a fairly decent idea of what was going on in Japan.

Fortunately, TheBus to Kailua was running behind schedule so we were able to get back to the house shortly before 11 pm.

We’re going to tonight’s baseball game and the volleyball match tomorrow night. Will anyone be attending either one who can give us a ride back to Kailua?

And, ol course, I’ll be at a softball game later on as soon as I am able to find out when the buses will start running again so I can figure out if I can get to my afternoon business meet-ups. What a great time to be without access to a car!!

  30. papajoe2 March 11, 2011 10:08 am

Off subject a little: I cannot stand it when the news reporters say a tsunami “wave” of 3′, 6′. It gives the perception that “oh, we had 30 feet waves and we survived.” It is actually more like a place is filling up with 3′ of water. The faucet will not turn off. What other word can we use besides “wave.” I witnessed a few people on the beach in Waikiki on camera just a few minutes before 3:07 am. They were lucky. Ignorant, stupid, but lucky.

I think the toughest part for me last night was watching the KGMB interview with the USCG Captain of the Port around 0230. I could picture what she was saying and the quietly feverish activity and prep going on behind the scenes. As a retiree who worked in her command, I can’t decide whether I am relieved to be spared the work and adrenalin — or just feel left out. Be glad old retirees like me, BG, Kekoa, and A-House aren’t called up and needed in the aftermath here.

On my way over to the bus stop for afternoon meetings before heading on up to UH for some softball and baseball, but I did want to take a few minutes to update folks here about the CIP funding in the current year’s budget for the UH-Manoa Athletics Complex. The major projects that will start shortly include a number of improvements to the Ching Complex as well as the overhead screen in The Stan. The RWSS improvements – including the locker room facilities – are in process of being designed.

The main women’s locker room upgrades are also in the planning process.

As for the lighting fixtures in The Les, the “lightbulbs” will be replaced on a case-by-case basis as a stopgap until funding has been allocated and released for replacing the entire system sometime during the next five to seven years.

I had planned to call the person in charge of these projects today in order to get more specifics, but most of UH-M is closed so that call will have to wait.

What else would you like to see done – besides repairing The Stan’s roof and replacing Klum Gym with more parking facilities – which I oppose, BTW. Any other lower campus projects you’d like to see take place?

Aloha Stadium upgrades involve an entirely different batch of people. Unfortunately, DaGov wants to tear down the Stadium without having the funding to replace it. By the time that happens – if it does – most of us here will have shuffed off this mortal coil. Nevertheless, I am not giving up on this and am trying to get in to see the right people to options and alternatives to tearing down Aloha Stadium and destroying UH’s intercollegiate athletics programs.

Go Wahine, Go ‘Bows, Go Warriors

I didn’t want to post this last night due to the emergency situation, but since things are slow now…

On this day (March 9) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog310 comments on a slow news day. At ST’s general request at 1343, a blogger who started posting on March 7 as the “Palisades Kid”, changed his blog name to Kazz.

As a side note in ST’s blog entry: “By the way, we’re hearing the finance director might be getting a raise. At a Board of Regents meeting, the athletic director [HF] credited her with helping to balance the budget.” Groan…the 20/20 hindsight thing is real disturbing again–balanced budget pffffft!

The way I figure it is, if the schedule is announced Monday afternoon, then the ticket renewal forms can be sent that day, at the earliest. I figure you have to give last year’s season ticket holders at least a month to decide if they want to renew or come up with the moolah for a renewal. (Don’t forget the tax man is coming.)

After that, new season ticket sales can start.

What’s the biggest problem with the delay in selling tickets? The order is this: Season ticket renewals, new ticket sales, pay-per-view sales, announcement of nationally televised games.

By waiting, it’s now been leaked that the prime games on the UH schedule — San Jose State, Fresno State, Boise State and Washington — will be on ESPN, live and for free. Good luck in trying to sell a pay-per-view package of Utah State, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State. Nevada probably will be picked up by ESPN Regional.

I think there’s a great frustration with the schedule — and especially with the schedule maker — but I think it would be a good idea to tone down some of the personal comments about the athletic director.

Hate the act, not the person, and all of that.

He gave his mea culpa, as best as he could (although, really, blaming the WAC was not very smart).

I would highly recommend having the blog tailgate across the street at one of the sites by the Richardson pool. Parking would be free. It could start before noon and folks could kick back and eat/drink all afternoon while talking story before going in early to watch the warmups. It only costs $35 to reserve one of the sites (grills already provided). BTW, any active duty person can make the reservation.

Gigi – I was planning on buying a block of tickets, say 20-30 (or whatever the demand is as of a certain cut-off date TBD). Probably the easiest way to distribute them would be at the game and people can pay me then. (Cash please.) Or if people want them in advance, I could collect a check or money order and send the tix to them. Whatever makes people feel more comfortable.

We “discover” Kazz, gigi-hawaii makes her quota with 24 posts, BG suggests Richardson Field for a blog tailgate, the Las Vegas “chapter” is nearing formation, and Rich2176 reconfirms he will buy tickets for the UH-UNLV game in September 2007 (he ended up buying 100 tickets…and 215 in 2009).

😳 ooops, my date/time clock is still off from last night…

On this day (March 10) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog222 comments on another slow day. Rokko, residing in Japan, gets advice from las vegas. ST learns the identity of Guava, who subsequently learns how to “blockquote” on the blog.

    Comment from: brew808 [Visitor]

Vegas- “htae” is pretty strong feeling, especially for this Blog. I do understand and respect your (and other’s) opinion. I would say, for me, I strongly disagree with the procedures, results (or lack of), and attitude of the present AD, and would enthusiastically support any notion he might have to move on.

Change of subject – when you and Rich get together in LV, is that an official BLOG bash? Does that mean it’s BlogBash 3 or 2.1 or something? Same thing when Al, Bulla, DPK, and SteveM have lunch at Camelia, or even just run into each other at 21 Mart – BlogBash 2.2? LOL!!! [note that the first “Cattle Call” did not occur until March 14. brew808 predicted Camellia instead of Makino and identified 4 of the 6 attendees. He has blog ESP and is extremely perceptive]

My theory is, Guava is actually Dave Reardon. 😉

I am curious who Guava is, but I can understand keeping it a secret. I think we’ve all seen he’s a trustworthy source, and he’s become easier to talk to (and argue with). 😀

    03/10/07 @ 20:14

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

Not Dave Reardon. Dave is a better speller. lol.

    03/10/07 @ 20:18

    Comment from: Rokko [Visitor]

Methinks Mr. Guava is a recent Warrior, perhaps a former linebacker? A defensive player anyway. We may never discover his true identity but it will be fun speculating.

    03/10/07 @ 20:2

    Comment from: prideperiod [Visitor]

I really don’t want to know who Guava is. I’d also prefer if others would try not to figue out who he is. But of course we can’t stop anyone from trying. But Guava is our mole. He’s definitely the “throat”. It benifits the TSAIKO’s to have him working in anonymity. We don’t want the insiders to know who he is, or it will compromise his ability to obtain information for us.

    03/10/07 @ 21:48

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

I agree with prideperiod and Rokko…I don’t want to know Guava’s identity. More interesting for us, more comfortable for him. Besides, there is more than one secret identity on this blog… 😉

good to know, “coolen’s palace” will get their locker-infracture, etc designed. that’s a start.

the wahine sb program is deserving of a facility that symbolizes institutional support. coolen and wahine have provided hawaii tax payers a free treat over the years and have accomplished national recognition with a skimpy budget and pure heart. they are more than worthy, even in these austere times.

it’s nearly 3 p.m. , Miami Ohio batting bottom of 2nd, game tied 1-1. Game was supposed to start at 2 pm., UH is scheduled to play at 4 pm and 6 pm tonight.

Ralph — I thought UH Wahine played a single game today (March 11) at 6:00 PM. Double header tomorrow at 4:00 and 6:00 PM. Was there a change I missed?

…or is everyone off a day due to staying up all night? 😕

  63. SteveM March 11, 2011 3:16 pm

A-joe — yeah. I’ll probably slow down/stop after the first Cattle Call coming up in a couple days (back then). I didn’t realize anyone could access a Honolulu Advertiser blog, dating back to 2007. SteveM has magical powers…

It’s impossible to access my old articles in the Star-Bulletin. Don’t know why, but when I click on a link to a Bulletin article, it sends me to the current issue of the Star-Advertiser. Go figger!

  65. gigi-hawaii March 11, 2011 3:38 pm

    WDoc,

I wasn’t aware that Abercrombie wanted to tear down Aloha Stadium without first getting funding for a new stadium! That is just plain crazy.

Where’s Mark Takai when we need him? Think he’ll allow this to happen?

  66. gigi-hawaii March 11, 2011 3:42 pm

…and I still don’t know Guava’s true identity. Is ST the only one who does?

Whatever happened to Guava? He doesn’t post comments here anymore. Is he still in Hawaii?

Good morning Tsaikos and saw the damage done by the tsunami. Am very happy to see no lives were lost in Hawaii, but it is a mass of destruction in Japan. My nephew is at Misawa AFB is ok, but has no electricity. My other relatives near Sendai (one of the worst hit areas) is ok, but feel for the many families who lost their loved one. the estimated tsunami wave speed that hit Sendai was unbelievable (heard something like 500 mph).

Much like the Warriors did after the disaster in Samoa the other year.

    W-Doc . . .

Thanks for the CIP updates. Odd about tearing down the stadium without funding for a new stadium in place.

    Does not make much sense.

    Nytal!

  97. d1shima March 11, 2011 7:10 pm

BBCWorld on twitter reports power back on in Sendai. A few grocery stores open. Regular aftershocks continue.

    Earlier tweets indicate:

    – 215,000 in emergency shelters

    – 4 million without power

    – thousands remain trapped on rooftops surrounded by swirling flood waters

Someone mentioned that it started snowing shortly after the tsunami yesterday. Not sure what the weather is like today.

    Unreal.

  98. el guapo March 11, 2011 7:14 pm

IIRC the Gov wanted to revisit the issue of building a new stadium vs. repairing and renovating Aloha Stadium. The costs discussed were $150M to repair and $300M to build new. Even Lowell Kalapa the tax watchdog favored a new stadium. Of course the funding is not in place because no decision was reached yet. It doesn’t make sense because Doc is usually on top of these things.

Doc, why are you opposed to another parking structure?

  99. Domenic Pechaira March 11, 2011 7:19 pm

  103. gigi-hawaii March 11, 2011 7:36 pm

Too bad there’s radiation leakage from the nuclear plants in Japan. One more reason not to have them in Hawaii.

  104. gigi-hawaii March 11, 2011 7:45 pm

If there is anything I am truly grateful for, it’s the ability to use the Internet. How wonderful to be able to communicate your hopes and fears to friends and relatives thoughout the world.

A friend told us via her blog that her relatives in Hawaii were able to contact relatives in Sendai and Tokyo today. All are well and accounted for, though the family in Sendai are sleeping in their car, because their house was ruined.

  105. gigi-hawaii March 11, 2011 7:46 pm

The Internet is a blessing. Let’s use it wisely.

  106. gigi-hawaii March 11, 2011 8:45 pm

    Exciting volleyball game!

  107. Lanaiboy March 11, 2011 8:48 pm

Wahine lost to Longwood 1-0 on a home run. Wahine this year has a power shortage; their overall hitting average is slowly going down too as the season progresses. Majam in a huge slump, her average going from above .600 in the beginning of the year to, I would guess, about .250 today. She has struck out over half of the at-bats in the last half dozen games. Her cancer has affected her hitting significantly. Hope the team breaks out of their collective hitting slump. The team is getting great pitching so they will continue to win most of their games. However, the postseason is getting less and less promising if they don’t start hitting soon.

  108. Pomai March 11, 2011 9:14 pm

Lanaiboy – Kelly has 56 at bats, 14 hits, 21 walks and 21 strikeouts. The problem is that she is known now so they are throwing nothing but junk at her. Her power is just as good as last season, but your right in that she appears to be in a small slump, but all good players get in them, she will be ok and so will the team. Was a tough lost tonight, it’s hard to pitch a one hit game and lose.

  109. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 9:26 pm

    Pomai,

#108, is that only wishful thinking, cause right now all the girls except for one is trying to hit a homerun, thus having that mean upper cut swing which only result in pop ups. The only girl not trying to hit a home run every time up is Sarah, that is why she is leading the team in average.

She has the level line drive swing. Pomai, sometimes you need to tell it like it is, and quite blowing smoke.

  110. Snoring Nomore March 11, 2011 9:27 pm

You make a different advice on your website than many people do. I totally agree with you.

  111. Ralph March 11, 2011 9:42 pm

#25 Kentucky 9-6 winner over #8 Tennessee; #21 Baylor 6-0 over #6 Arizona; Alcorn State upsets #18 Texas Tech 4-2. All other teams ranked above Hawaii and played won their games today.

  112. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 9:48 pm

As long as Coach Coolen allows the girls to have that homerun, upper cut, swing, this team will struggle. The only way this team will win consistantly is for the girls to forget about hitting homeruns, just swing level and hit line drives for singles and doubles. Only bad things happen when a batter constantly swings for the fences, either a pop up, or strike out. You can ask any batting instructor and they will tell you the same thing.

On this day (March 11) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … only 137 comments, even with the nightshift. But ST’s blog entry for the day was a surprise…

Posted on: March 11, 2007 at 8:27:43 am

    Belated thanks

One of my many faults is an inability to fully express appreciation.

(Sorry, Auntie Caroline, if I forgot to send that thank-you note from my high school graduation.)

Which leads to the (accidental) discovery that the Warrior Beat received more than 340,000 visits in February.

The total has little to do with the large-foreheaded person whose photo accompanies this blog and everything to do with the popularity of UH football and the passion of its fans. I know this because the most comments posted came on a day when the readers served as blog hosts.

When this blog started eight months ago, the intent was it would run for only a few months. But then the readers took over, and now they dictate the content and direction.

Before the upcoming announcement of the complete schedule and the start of spring ball, it’s time to stop and acknowledge the folks who have helped the blog’s development.

Thanks to Rainbowsportsnetwork.com and Sportshawaii.com for creating a market. Their links to this site have boosted interest tremendously.

Thanks to our support staff — Curtis Murayama, Princess Leila, Dayton Morinaga and Stacy Kaneshiro.

Thanks to June Jones for allowing access to his program, and also to the Sun God, Brian K., Lois Manin and Bobbie Omoto.

And, most of all, thanks to our regular posters:

  114. Ralph March 11, 2011 9:53 pm

The girls don’t swing with an upper cut, their extension and follow through swing is with the bat head finishing high and that is not an upper cut (scoop) swing.

Their to the ball approach is with the bat swinging on a downward plane, getting their hands and bat above the ball, and upon contact and driving through the ball with their hands and arms fully extended their follow through takes their swing and bat in an upward plane.

Good hitting stroke, unfortunately, they are not hitting well lately and its a matter of making contact off center. Wells, tonight’s pitcher, mixed her pitches very well tonight, she kept the batters off balance and her riser induced a lot of pop ups.

  115. Ralph March 11, 2011 9:58 pm

You can not hit a riser with a level swing, the batter has to keep their hands high and the bat on top of the ball, your little league approach to hitting will not work in fast pitch softball or D1 baseball where there is more movement on the pitched ball.

  116. SteveM March 11, 2011 9:59 pm

    RE: #113

Accidently missing from the list was truegreen and homey.

but homey’s time is coming… boy, it is coming… 😯

  117. Ralph March 11, 2011 10:03 pm

six of the Na Wahine are batting over .300 and we know Kelly will shake out her hitting soon and having seven batters over .300 is a good omen. Our pitching is holding the opponent to a collective .201 average.

This is the preseason, a shake up cruise, we will win when it counts-the Wac, Wac championship tournament and the NCAA tournament. Be patient, we are 16-5 and that isn’t bad.

  118. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 10:03 pm

Who are you kidding Ralph, are you saying every pitcher they have been facing lately has been keeping the batters off balance with a riser, I do not think so. Even last week how many times has a batter pop up to the infield or even to the pitcher. The only way you do that is with an upper cut. If they were swing the way you say they are, that would result most of in a ground ball, if not, a line drive. But no, it is pop up, after stupid pop up.

  119. homey ℞ March 11, 2011 10:06 pm

I’m still waiting to go to the batting cages or an impromptu batting practice with some of you guys and gals. Let’s see how batting techniques on a computer screen translates to the semi-real world. At least we’ll have a good laugh.

Any takers? I know BG would go!

  120. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 10:06 pm

    Ralph,

I hope you are right, and do not have to eat your words, if they do not win the WAC, or get into the NCAA, cause of their lack of hitting.

  121. Ralph March 11, 2011 10:08 pm

Arizona and Tennessee with 3 losses, UCLA and Oregon with 4, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State with 5, and with 6 losses to date, LSU and Texas A & M.

All good programs, all records in preseason, and I’m sure all will be invited to the NCAA tournament.

  122. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 10:12 pm

    Ralph,

The way the Wahine are playing right now, offensively, I do not see them beating Longwood, on Monday, or Sunday, if they play them then. I also do not see them beating California, or BYU. The WAC season is not that far off. Beating teams like South Dakota State, does not mean anything. If the Wahine do not watch out, they could find themselves on the outside looking in. Wondering what happened.

  123. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 10:24 pm

    Ralph,

The WAC conference does not compare at all, with any of the conferences those teams belong to. Let us see, they lost the last 3 games on the road, came back and beat 3 teams that have not won at all yet. Lost tonight to a team, as you put it, beat only average teams. So I guess since Longwood beat the Wahines, the Wahine are just average.

  124. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 10:29 pm

    Ralph,

So you would go to your grave with that philosophy of hitting?? What happens when that philosophy causes them to not win the WAC, or get into the NCAA Tournament?

  125. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 10:32 pm

    Ralph,

I just want you to know, I do not want to get into a pissing match with you. I respect what you say, and want the Wahine to win just as much as you. But I am just stating what I have been seeing from the beginning of the season, excluding their road trip. Alot of people around me, at the games, have been seeing the same thing, I do.

  129. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 11:06 pm

The difference between last year’s Wahine Softball Team, excluding the 4 seniors, and this year’s. Last year, the 5 returning players just let the home runs happen, this year they are trying to hit home runs, that is a big difference. Main difference, over swinging, resulting in out all the time.

  130. WahineSoftballFan March 11, 2011 11:17 pm

Last year you would see solid outs, or foul balls, this year, all you see are lazy outs, or foul ball, nothing really solid. That is a big indication of over swinging, trying to hit a home run. All they need to do is swing for the solid base hit. Once they start hitting line drives and quite trying for the home run. Everything else will come around, like home runs. Why do you think Sarah is leading the team in hitting, cause she does not try to hit home run, just tries to get base hits.

  205. rosetta stone software March 20, 2011 10:02 pm

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
