Tuesday ramblings

Anybody else think that next year’s UH football camp should be held on Lanai?

* * * * *

Maybe it was the dignity of a head coach like Nick Saban sending smiley face or <3 messages, but it is too bad that the NCAA permits only basketball coaches, but not football counterparts, to send unlimited texts to prospects. Texts are great because they’re immediate, and yet not-so immediate. They can be sent and read at any time.

Former Warrior QB Bryant Moniz said it was “cool” to finally play in his first football game since suffering an ankle injury in November. Moniz signed with the Georgia Force of the AFL a month ago, but did not take his first snap until this past Saturday’s game against the Utah Blaze. He will make his second start this Sunday.

And, for the niele, Moniz said he got his buzz cut at Grady’s Cuts in Atlanta.

gcut

Grady’s has a Facebook page.

What’s more,  the guy who cut his hair — Royce Noel — can be followed on Twitter: Roycedabarber.

Not sure when ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue, a.k.a. AKA, became known by its initials on first reference. But the UH athletic department’s fund-raising umbrella has been doing a good job with its magazine and radio show (“Manoa Underground”). It also took some innovative strategy to plan a Stevie Wonder fund-raising concert at the Stan Sheriff Center without breaking any no-compete clauses with other venues.

    First.

  2. Hank June 26, 2012 7:28 am

    Good morn’in!

  3. HawaiiMongoose June 26, 2012 7:28 am

    And good morning all.

  4. Hank June 26, 2012 7:28 am

    Shucks!

  5. Warrior Dave June 26, 2012 7:31 am

Can’t wait for to hear and see Stevie in concert. Ordered my tickets over the weekend.

Kudo’s to AKA for setting up what should be the first of many concert fundraisers!!

    Top 10 Baby!

  6. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2012 7:33 am

    Hank:

Every time I see the word “shucks,” I think about the screaming in the newsroom once. Turned out it was a woman demonstrating how to shuck a coconut with her teeth.

Which reminds me of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoZaDq6pXyA

  7. Otto June 26, 2012 7:37 am

Do they still have the old pineapple plantation bunkhouses? Several OIA football teams use to go to Lanai to work picking pineapples in the summer. Help them to earn some kala and build team chemistry…. work together… play together…

  8. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 7:43 am

I saw a woman (same one?) shucking a coconut at Polynesian Culture Center over 10 years ago. Awesome! Her teeth were stronger than mine.

  9. A-joe June 26, 2012 7:46 am

Lanai would be an excellent destination to hold summer camp. It’s more than far away from all the distractions. Great place to get down to some serious training. Only thing gotta hall all the training equipment there.

But, if you’re ever find yourself on Lanai and looking for a place to eat, hop n over to Canoe’s Lanai Restaurant. Ask for Ola. Tell her BIK and A-joe sent you.

  10. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 7:48 am

Hubby and I stayed at Manele Bay Resort on Lanai many years ago. Got to take the bus to Koele Lodge and look around. Not much else to do on Lanai.

  11. ballpicker June 26, 2012 7:49 am

Good morning all. Since this rambling Tuesday, i’ll ramble just a bit and put out an sos call. Does anyone need a not so beat up retired po for a job? Got let go from mine yesterday. Need to make money NOW.

K back to the regular programming. Howzit DPK?

    Go Warriors

Great to see WW and WNY cranking up the Tsaiko membership count in their little corner of the world. Along with that, it would be fun to hop over to the Big Island to attend their innaugural CC. Time to choose a chaptah prez! You got so many good fallah to choose from, you might consider term limits! Bwhahahah…

DPK, let me know if you have plans to attend, in case me and you gotta arm wrestle for the guest cottage at your ‘ohana’s compound. I was telling SteveM how your brothers 6 acre retreat is perfect for our ever growing Tsaiko nation. Maybe one day we could ALL gather for an international cc!

  14. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2012 8:05 am

Day 2 of my vacation, and as I stand before all of you, I say this:

    “Hello, my name is Stephen, and I’m a hoarder . . . ”

I know this because I just found a newspaper ad of Mike Cavanaugh. I don’t even think Cavanaugh’s wife keeps newspaper clippings of Cav.

  15. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2012 8:10 am

I think A-Joe should run for governor.

He’ll get the restaurant endorsement, for sure.

  16. ballpicker June 26, 2012 8:13 am

What are going to do on your vacation Stephen?

  17. tommui June 26, 2012 8:15 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Other than the horrible logistics of hauling equipment to Lanai and the airplane(s) transporting the football team there, there is the benefit that the team can practice without too many distractions and of course there won’t be too many people from the outside (i.e. the lower 48) keeping tab on what we are doing – of course we would have to keep an eye on locals wearing red and yellow clothing.

But the real benefit would be to make UH “Lanai’s Team” and you know who owns Lanai!

  18. papajoe2 June 26, 2012 8:15 am

ST, when you go off the blog for your vacation and have guest hosts, will they get rid of the Spam too?

  19. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 8:15 am

Yeah, why stay in Hawaii? Take a trip to India, like we are gonna do in November.

  20. ballpicker June 26, 2012 8:16 am

Word of advice, don’t cover sports. hehehe. JK . Unemployed and unenjoyed.

  21. papajoe2 June 26, 2012 8:17 am

Are they’re any Indians in India?

  22. papajoe2 June 26, 2012 8:17 am

That didn’t make sense. Are they’re but I went to public school.

  23. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 8:17 am

Ballpicker: are you getting unemployed benefits? What about health insurance?

  24. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 8:18 am

    PPJ: there are.

  25. papajoe2 June 26, 2012 8:20 am

    lol

  26. ballpicker June 26, 2012 8:23 am

Gigi, no nothing so exotic from my company.

  27. ballpicker June 26, 2012 8:26 am

But I’m gettimg my documents and phone records together because this could become ugly.

But actually I’m looking for work.

  28. ballpicker June 26, 2012 8:31 am

  29. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 8:32 am

    Ballpicker: good luck!

  30. midori7 June 26, 2012 8:33 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Haven’t been able to read the blog in a while. Thanks for the birthday wishes last week.

I’ve been to Lanai once. Can’t remember too much because the motion sickness pill kicked in & I was pretty tired…but I do recall eating lunch…a hamburger?

  31. Supastoke June 26, 2012 8:34 am

Condolence to family of John Koko.

  32. djmitcho June 26, 2012 8:50 am

Lana’i has changed so much since I was a kid….and I bet even more since Ralph lived there. I still love visiting though….there is so much solitude to be had

    Good morning!

Rainbow Classic may be just what the doctor ordered for Gib’s young team.

    Cya at lunch!

  35. Stretch June 26, 2012 9:48 am

There is a Nov 9 WVB game scheduled against BYUH at 7pm. I wonder if the basketball games will be played in the afternoon or the WVB game will be moved to Thursday since it’s BYUH and no travel is involved.

  36. ballpicker June 26, 2012 9:50 am

    Gigi-Hawaii, mahalo.

  37. jimmy the lock June 26, 2012 9:54 am

Aaron Zwahlen’s dad ordered the Rainbow Classic?

  38. (Jesse) James June 26, 2012 9:55 am

    That’s a big DE.

  41. jimmy the lock June 26, 2012 10:25 am

Always thought it would not hurt to offer. You may just get what you ask for.

  42. jimmy the lock June 26, 2012 10:29 am

Man goes swimming in ocean. Young shark accidentally bites man. Shark thought man was seal pup. Man sues shark. Swim at your own risk man.

I need to brush up on my geography. I didn’t realize Turkey and Syria were neighbors.

Besides football, looking forward to the Summer Olympics. I’m still wondering why equestrian is in there. Can’t imagine a horse growing up and dreaming of one day becoming an Olympic champion.

    Tuesday ramblings.

  46. lava June 26, 2012 11:00 am

A former UH player’s barber can be followed on twitter? I think that is a reach even for a Tuesday rambling.

  47. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 11:01 am

That DE Gaius V, listed at 6-6: Is that with shoes on? If so, how high are the shoes?

  48. papajoe2 June 26, 2012 11:22 am

jimmy the lock, the man that was bitten by the shark would probably sue the state because they didn’t put up a sign saying that there might be sharks in the ocean. Maybe he’s from South Dakota and never knew that. Sounds stupid but we all know that people will probably try. The bad part about it is, the state would probably settle our of court. Just like the lady that suing the 11 year old baseball player.

  49. A-House June 26, 2012 11:28 am

back in the late 60s/early 70s, a lady filed a claim for bodily injuries when a football hit he head while at a UH game at the old stadium

she was in the Ewa endzone and put her head down looking for something when the UH kicker kicked the PAT

    final ruling: assumption of risk!

  50. jimmy the lock June 26, 2012 11:29 am

    @papajoe2

That was sorta my point. Stupid to sue the shark. As with the lady, stupid to sue the kid.

  51. Gsky June 26, 2012 11:30 am

With that height, he probably will end up an olineman, dontcha think?

  52. Gsky June 26, 2012 11:31 am

    Or a TE?????

  53. jimmy the lock June 26, 2012 11:33 am

That shark story was fabricated. Just rambling on Tuesday and throwing out some chum to see what comes out of the depths.

    alnbama:

    are you still in Huntsville?

we are planning to attend the UH-Navy game in 2013 – never been to Annapolis and would eventually make it to Air Force Academy as part of my “bucket list”

Mrs A-House says I was a different person while at West Point even though I was hurting with a siatic nerve attack – first time in a very long time I saluted, in civilian clothes, as the “colors” went by – very proud to have served in the US Army!

  56. papajoe2 June 26, 2012 12:02 pm

jimmy, now the husband is also sueing the family of the 11 year old because of her injuries and looking ugly, he is missing the intimate part with her. Get paper bag?

    Roger, Out!

  58. HawaiiMongoose June 26, 2012 12:11 pm

Woo-hoo. The four-team college football playoff has been officially approved by the BCS presidential oversight committee.

That means it’s time to start lobbying for an eight-team playoff.

  59. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 12:18 pm

    Alright NY-ers,

Time to come out of Hiding! Let’s get together! I’m creating an NYC cattle call…

Where? Carmine’s in the Theater District in NYC…

    When? July 28

Why? Great Italian food served family style… One of my favorite spots in NYC. (If any you all want to change it up, we can compromise)

    Hope to see y’all there!

  60. LizKauai June 26, 2012 12:27 pm

    http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/06/26/155802880/bcs-presidents-approve-four-team-college-football-playoff

“Come 2014, the BCS is dead. A committee of university presidents on Tuesday approved the BCS commissioners’ plan for a four-team playoff to start in the 2014 season.

“The move completes a six-month process in which the commissioners have been working on a new way to determine a college football champion. Instead of simply matching the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country in a championship game after the regular season, the way the Bowl Championship Series has done since 1998, the new format will create a pair of national semifinals. No. 1 will play No. 4, No. 2 will play No. 3.

  61. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 12:28 pm

    Oh that should say,

NY-ers or any Tsaikos in NYC at the time are invited…

  62. LizKauai June 26, 2012 12:28 pm

    Ohhh… wish I was in NYC now…

  63. tommui June 26, 2012 12:34 pm

    Thanks LIZ for #61 news.

So should the MWC get an AQ this year, would it really be a big deal?

Wonder what the powers-that-be at Boise are thinking at the moment!

    GARRET: where are you? Comments?

  64. tommui June 26, 2012 12:35 pm

#60 WarriorNY – what happened to Mama Leone?

  65. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 12:35 pm

    @61,

I honestly liked the BCS format the way it was. These kids now have to play two extra games on top of a conference championship in some cases. The only thing wrong with the old/current BCS format was the non-AQ teams had no chance… For the most part, BCS seemed to get it right… I know I’m in the minority on this but looking back on it, the BCS wasn’t so bad…

  66. A-House June 26, 2012 12:48 pm

What are the “qualifications” to qualify for #1 – #4?

If they speak of “conference champion”, “computer rankings”, strength of schedule, how different is this from the current format? “BCS” schools will always be at the top of strength of schedule; computer rankings, if they use the same criteria, will almost always favor the BCS schools; and conference champs may be the only differenence in that no schools from the same conference can play for #1 (like they did last year with Alabama vs LSU).

But, if 2 schools from the same conference are #1 or #2 or #3 or #4, what then?

Again, the cards are stacked in favor of the same powerful conferences – SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 12, and Notre Dame and the “fromer” BCS commissioners are laughing all the way to the bank!!!!!

  67. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 12:49 pm

    tommui,

I’ve never been there. Is it a good spot? I did a quick google search but I only saw one in RI. I’m open for anywhere but love the family style aspect of Carmine’s…

    LizKauai,

You and all Tsai-ko’s are more than welcome to come out here.

  68. Kevin June 26, 2012 12:54 pm

    A-House,

EXACTLY!!! Spot on and to the point!!!

  69. tommui June 26, 2012 12:56 pm

#68 WarriorNY – alas, you can’t go home again!

Mama Leone’s began in the Village and eventually went to somewhere in the Theatre District – maybe Broadway and 45th. I guess the place is no longer around.

Of course, I got out of NYC in 1960 but been back many times since then but other than trips to the theater, museums etc, it was come in and go back to the ‘burbs.

  70. A-House June 26, 2012 12:56 pm

Midori sends me on a mission to Longs and I meet a very opposing being – muscles buldging, no smile, very focused – yes, folks it’s the mighty “homey” returning to his nest with his purchase.

  71. J-FORCE June 26, 2012 12:56 pm

Is it fall camp yet? Can’t wait to see all new recruits and walk on. Always looking

for new fb magazine out there and all the predictions and pre-season top 25. Enjoy

everyone’s cattle call parties. Oh yeah, olympics will keep me busy ’till warriors start

    making some noise.

    Go Warriors!

  72. Wes'side Warrior June 26, 2012 1:00 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

I loved Lana’i! (Although I stayed at Manele Bay, and the bathroom in that place was bigger than the house I was actually living in at the time!)

Don’t know if sequestering the boyz for fall camp would be good. I’m guessing some have jobs and other issues that would have to be dealt with. Don’t know how we could justify pulling folks for a couple of weeks or more without financial compensation, etc.

    Speaking of that BCS playoff…

    As I’d responded on LizKauai’s post…

Why did they keep saying “the presidents” in the article, but not tell us WHO those presidents were? I am sure not all DIA (FBS) presidents were “invited” to cast their votes for this one! Big sham! Wow!

  73. Haleakala June 26, 2012 1:03 pm

WarriorNY: It sounds like you are doing well. Hopefully the Jets and the Knicks will be doing well when their seasons start up again.

Do you notice a lot of Hawaii people in NY this month? There should be since Hawaiian Airlines had a promotion with some CHEAP fares. I missed it, but as you know did travel to the Big Apple in late February. That actually was a good time to visit since it was not too crowded.

  74. tommui June 26, 2012 1:06 pm

In the last part of April, I just recall reading that the BCS “made official the news (that) … there will no longer be AQ designations for any conference, potentially making it harder for the Big East to get one of its teams into a marquee bowl game every season” … this being linked to the passage of the proposed “playoff”.

Is this AQ news still operative?

  75. jimmy the lock June 26, 2012 1:06 pm

    @A-House

I wholeheartedly agree with you. BCS conferences will rule. If they ever decide to go with an 8-team playoff, maybe, just maybe, a non-BCS school will be considered to join the exclusive bowl party.

For sure Boise is in it for the $$$. Go Broncos, go enjoy your Big East travels and fail to find a home for your other sports. May Title IX bite you in the horses’ butt.

  76. A-joe June 26, 2012 1:06 pm

Flight on Hawaiian Air to New York for WarriorNY’s inaugural, NYC Tsaiko CC:

    HNL to JFK

Thursday July 26 Non Stop. $311

    JFK to HNL

Sunday, July 29 Non Stop. $539

    Can?

  77. kawika49 June 26, 2012 1:06 pm

One would think, that Papa Johns in GA would be jumping on sponsoring Pizza for the Force.

  78. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 1:09 pm

    Tommui,

Did you live here in 1960? That’s incredibly fascinating. I’d really like to hear about your time here. My father moved to NYC in 1969 and I am blown away by the differences in culture… I would really like to hear some of your stories from here…

  79. Ipu Man June 26, 2012 1:15 pm

Warrior NY make an offer that lurkers in NY can’t refuse…

  80. Aurore Cassis June 26, 2012 1:17 pm

It’s a shame you can’t get anything cool like this on the inside of a car any more.

  81. Ipu Man June 26, 2012 1:17 pm

it would be nice if Hawaiian crew and stewardess and stewards could

drop in on Warrior NY’s cc…

  82. Ipu Man June 26, 2012 1:20 pm

Well, didn’t someone say Fresno and Idaho (not BSU) were represented…?

  83. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 1:21 pm

WarriorNY: WHAT TIME on July 28?

  84. SteveM June 26, 2012 1:22 pm

WarriorNY — what time is the NYC cattle call on July 28?

  85. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 1:22 pm

WarriorNY: What name is the reservation under?

  86. tommui June 26, 2012 1:23 pm

#78 WarriorNY – I lived in NYC at 79 Mott Street – going to school at 302 Broadway – and was there from 6/56 to about 2/60.

I don’t know what kind of stories you would like to hear/know about other than Chinatown has expanded and Little Italy on Mulberry has contracted.

The Bowery was filled with flop houses and drunks and druggies. Now it seems to be chic and is the new Village; the old cultural center has moved Broadway and 52nd(?) and the Concert Hall has undergone two changes since then (Fisher-Avery Hall).

  87. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 1:23 pm

BTW, my aunt treated me to dinner at Mama Leone’s back in the early 1970s. I wasn’t impressed with the food or the decor.

  88. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 1:25 pm

    Haleakala:

Yes, I am doing very well. Thank you again. Tell your Mrs. I say hello. I spoke to my brother about her actually, he remembers her just as well as I do, from 20+ years ago… Crazy… Honestly, I’m not really in tune with the increase in travel but I hope its been successful. I’m hoping the Jets can hold onto Royce Pollard as I’ve told many of my friends that he is the second coming of Victor Cruz of the Giants… The Knicks… :-/

  89. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 1:25 pm

Tom: Remember the Rainbow Room? Hubby and I went dinner and dancing there in 1997. We dined on braised rabbit and danced to 2 different combos – one big band and one Latin. Fun!

  90. tommui June 26, 2012 1:28 pm

#82 Ipu Man – I don’t know who was present but rather doubt it. I believe from the news that the BCS people presented the package to the “presidential oversight committee” who gave it its OK.

“The presidential oversight committee is headed by Virginia Tech’s Charles W. Steger and includes one university leader from each of the 11 major football conferences, as well as independent Notre Dame.”

  91. A-joe June 26, 2012 1:29 pm

    tommui-

During your time in NY did you ever have the chance to make your way to the Hawaiian Room over at the Lexington?

  92. tommui June 26, 2012 1:31 pm

#87, 89 GIGI = Mama Leone was great when it was in the Village but got kinda “commercial” or touristy when it moved uptown.

I recall the Rainbow Room. Think I went there with my wife when we were still in school. Wasn’t it either at Rock. Center or Lexington Hotel?

  93. tommui June 26, 2012 1:34 pm

#91 = I don’t think so. A student with only the GI Bill and part-time work only has so much disposal income. (The big expenditure besides food was $3.00 SRO at the Met every Saturday).

  94. jimmy the lock June 26, 2012 1:35 pm

How does a person dance to music when that said person doesn’t like to listen to music? lol

  95. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 1:35 pm

Tom: the Rainbow Room was at Rockefeller Center. It recently shut down.

  96. Darren June 26, 2012 1:36 pm

    Joe Schad ‏@schadjoe

The MWC did not get a waiver to be an AQ conference for the next two years

  97. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 1:36 pm

    To Gigi, SteveM and Ipu,

But again, if you guys want a different place, let me know in advance…

  99. HawaiiMongoose June 26, 2012 1:44 pm

Re #63, tommui, the word is out from some reporters on Twitter that in the same meeting where they approved the new playoff, the BCS presidential oversight committee also voted down the exemption requested by the MWC to be treated as an AQ conference in 2012 and 2013 (after which AQ status will go away).

The committee could have told the MWC no months ago, but waited until today. I guess they figured the playoff news would preoccupy everyone and limit the number of hard questions about why they denied the MWC essentially the same exemption they granted the Big East several years ago.

My Aunts, and uncles used to work at the Rcokefeller center back in the late 60’s. Most came back to help my aunt with Club Paga Pago and at Waikiki Sands with the Neylor sisters.

Difficult to figure that one out. All I can visualize is that you have Van Gogh’s ear for music.

Waikiki Sands, Club Pago Pago, Lauhala room. Thats where I grew up

Kawika: So why are you on the BI?

  108. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 1:52 pm

    Gigi,

Yes, How’d you know that? I saw you guys were going to India in November and I hope you have a great time. Just remember to eat some authentic Indian food when you get there…

  109. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 1:53 pm

Jimmy: the missing ear? Lol. Actually, I like music occasionally — have season tickets to the opera. But I hate karaoke or loud rock music or incessant elevator music.

  122. SteveM June 26, 2012 2:16 pm

Just updated my home page (click on my name) with the first NYC Cattle Call.

I was surprised to see Darshan’s real name, but it makes sense, since it is a “first contact” situation. I guess we take for granted the cattle calls and mainland/local tailgates where we each recognize most on sight.

Yup, a new chapter, New York City style. 🙂

  123. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 2:19 pm

I also want to make sure NYC Tsai-ko gathering has the approval of Mr. Tsai.

  124. jimmy the lock June 26, 2012 2:19 pm

It can be done. If the elite conference teams beat each other up and end up with a couple of losses here and there, an undefeated near-elite team could sneak in the final 4. Let’s see how this plays out in a couple of years and then rip it.

  125. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 2:19 pm

WarriorNY: don’t forget to have a photo taken of the group so SteveM can post it on his webpage. The dinner will be great. Wish hubby and I could join you all.

  127. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 2:26 pm

    Gigi,

I grew up in Hawaii… My Kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Haleakala. I lived on Maui till I was 13 when I moved to Molokai…(which I am hating with all this Lanai talk btw…)

  128. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 2:28 pm

Yikes… I meant to say (I am hating all the Lanai talk with my Molokai roots…)

  129. WarriorNY June 26, 2012 2:31 pm

After Molokai, I moved to L.A. and now NY…

  134. Buffoman June 26, 2012 2:57 pm

No use worrying about being left our of playoff, AQ, BCS, whateva..

This is what UH has to do (Maybe cannot this or next year, but in year three or four)

    1. Win

    2. Win on the road

    3. Win when on national TV

    4. Put players in NFL

    5. Start keeping 3 & 4 star players at home

    6. Bring a 4 star player or two in each of the next 3 years

    7. Win in bowl game

    8. Win conference in year 3 and 4

    9. Start diminishing losses with each year

    10. Become THE collegiate presence in the Far East

Maybe, just maybe, people will start to take notice and folks would possibly be interested in inviting to a nicer house if re-organization of conferences continues. Until then we just going unnoticed and easily left on the outside looking in.

  135. A-joe June 26, 2012 3:10 pm

My older brother once told me a story about when he was in grade school, he and a friend were in the school’s boys restroom one day. Just outside the window of the restroom a line of classmates were forming, getting ready to walk to the library. My brother’s friend decides he’s going to impress all the girls standing in line by climbing out the window and pretend to jump out.

So his friend climbs up on the sink, slides up the window and begins to hang half his body out over the window ledge.

“Eh! You guys like see me jump?”

His startled classmates looked up in amazement.

“I Going jump, you know. You guys like see?” my brother’s friend said.

The girls got scared and told him not too. The boys in line, on the other hand, wanted to see him do it.

“Yeah, brah!! Jump! Jump! We like see!” “Naah! He not going! He sked!!”

Confidently, my brother’s friend replied to his naysayers, “Wot! You think I not going jump? I going, you know! I did ‘um before! You like see?”

This banter went back and forth for a good 2 minutes.

All the while my brother stood their washing his hands, his friends’ Levi’s covered big butt stared back at him. “Brah, you like see me jump” I going, you know. I going…”

Finally, my brother couldn’t take it any longer and said aloud,

    “BRAH! JUST JUMP ALREADY!!”

and pushed his friend’s ass out the window!

Isn’t there a way to help further Boise’s decision by just pushing them out the window already?

    “BRAH! JUST JUMP ALREADY!!”

  136. kawika49 June 26, 2012 3:17 pm

Kekoa, btw do u know an Annie Mamea Harrington? She happens to be my half sister.

  140. K-Bay June 26, 2012 3:39 pm

    Fresno was representing Mountain West…

The Four team “playoff” is little more than a “plus-one” where the Winners of Two designated bowls playoff to claim ” Best Team” Award…

On any given day any of the Top Four should have a bettor’s chance of winning…

It will eliminate arguments only at the very top which is “the goal” — Keep the Big Money @ The Top…

AND PREVENT a Boise or (pre-PAC-12) Utah or Hawai’i or BYU/TCU from UPSETTING A TOP TEAM and PROVING The Need and Wisdom of A True Play-Off System (Top 8, 12, 16…) to determine a Truer National Champion…

  141. Bigislandkurt June 26, 2012 4:06 pm

The Air force Academy is being evacuated because of a roaring wildfire in Colorado Springs. On that same note, the High Park fire near Fort Collins is now the most expensive fire in Colorado history.

Pray for rain for them Colorado folks. Some of our future MWC conference mates are going through a very tough summer.

    BIK

  142. mano1 June 26, 2012 4:27 pm

Lanai would be good for UH Warriors. Like someone said, having a the owner back you with $$ is a good thing. There are many, many things to do there if you like doing things outdoors (hunting, fishing, skeet shooting, dirt bike riding, horse back riding, hiking, camping, diving.etc. Its a safe place so no worries about crime.

Yes, the old days when it was the worlds largest pineapple plantation OIA football teams used to work and train there for the summer. They earned money and coaches like Skippa (Mililani HC) would train them hard running from the town to the harbor and back.

They can also take the ferry to Maui for cheap and do things there and ferry back. more things to do on Maui including doing things for the fans there. They could even train like the ole physical fitness national champ style for their conditioning.

Canoes, Blue Ginger, both golf clubs, Pele’s, 565 all good eats.

  143. Kevin June 26, 2012 4:28 pm

  144. gigi-hawaii June 26, 2012 4:30 pm

    plus golfing.

  145. al June 26, 2012 4:57 pm

    no football field in lanai.

no housing facility other than 5 star hotels ane little lanai hotel.

no marketing value in having it on lanai.

spring training’s secondary goal is to help promote the program during the off season and to have potential recruits come and observe the warriors in action.

(aaron zwahlen john wa’a, rasha’an falemalu, keelan ewaliko, and all the local boys for example.)

  146. Ipu Man June 26, 2012 4:59 pm

OK, K-Bay, you are definitely right,

“PROVING The Need and Wisdom of A True Play-Off System (Top 8, 12, 16…) to determine a Truer National Champion…”

Sounds like the play off is rigged for Alabama, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, Ohio,

Virginias, Texas, USC, and other “connected” schools.

  147. Bigislandkurt June 26, 2012 5:10 pm

Ka’u had so many potential jumpers that I have a hard time thinking who that might have been. Mongo possibly? Where were the teachers in all of this? Probably right there sayin, “Just jump already.”

    Haaaaa. Great story A-Joe.

    BIK

The “new” playoff looks a lot like the same ole wine in a brand new bottle. I like A-joe’s idea of having an Football version of the NIT, where other teams can get some meaningful post-season play.

Meanwhile, here’s hoping the Warriors get to the level where they can beat the crap outta anybody, anytime, anywhere. That’s what its gonna take.

  154. NY Pake June 26, 2012 5:42 pm

SteveM thanx for the welcome. I’ve been living here in HI for the past 14 yrs now. I make it back to NYC every two yrs or so. My folks will be happy with the direct flight to JFK. They hated picking me up at Newark when the Only direct flight was on continental there.

Ipu — thus making today’s Ho’o malemale or Good ‘Ol Boy Sausage Love Fest Way Worse than the media flub of Lebron-Wade-Bosh two years ago… This one sticks for at least a couple years…

To paraphrase our previous celebrity football coach:

Real Men wouldn’t set up the system to avoid competition and run away from a fight….

Under their old argument that we’re deeper and tougher and week after week get beat up in our own brutal conferences, a three or four game playoff series should result in an exposed and depleted weakling Boise or Hawai’i, and the toughest and best should survive and arise…

(but somehow, even the small college schools and high schools can do it…)

SURE Would Fill Up that slow December with Games that Count (Huge TV Ratings) and Money FOR ALL (NCAA) would pour in…

Beeman Completes Coaching Staff for 2012-13

    6/26/2012 10:23:00 AM

HONOLULU—University of Hawai’i’s women’s basketball head coach Laura Beeman announced the hiring of Linnae Barber to her inaugural coaching staff. Barber is the third and final addition needed to complete the staff for the 2012-13 season.

Barber comes to Hawai’i after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at one of her alma maters, the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif.

“Linnae brings an added dimension to the Rainbow Wahine Women’s basketball program with her knowledge in human development and exercise psychology. She has a broad base in physical training which allows her to assist with our strength and conditioning. Linnae understands the relationship between student and athlete, which compliments our overall staff philosophy that academics come first. She has great California recruiting connections which strengthens our presence on the West Coast.”

  166. mano1 June 26, 2012 8:40 pm

AL: 5 star hotels are better than dorms or many other places one can stay. Wishing ? ok..but no diff from wishing that the new owner forks over $$ to the warriors. “No marketing value in having it on lanai.” No marketing value seems a bit harsh don’t you think ? Many people from all over the world pay big bucks to go to Lanai because they find value there. FB camp on Lanai…recruits would love it at a 5 star hotel, diving, swimming, surfing, fishing, skeet shooting, etc… But you know what…your right …no value on Lanai.

  167. HiFlyer June 26, 2012 9:01 pm

    .

  168. al June 26, 2012 9:12 pm

no marketing value for the university of hawaii having it in sparsely populated lanai.

not too many recruits couid afford a couple of nights in lanai, if any at all.

pssst. don’t let ralph read this he’d get all upset.

  169. al June 26, 2012 9:17 pm

My brother-in-law was on Kauai a couple of weeks ago w/ the HS ADs for their annual meeting & called recently to ask us to check on Wags. Apparently, Wags (representing KS-H) had some health issues & was in a hospital there for about 3 days until the docs felt he was good enough to go. So…..being in summer school @ KS-H & also a little niele, I stopped by his office to see how he was doing &, happy to say, he’s looking fine! We’re both the same age, so, as he put it, this is just our body’s way of reminding us to take care.

He did have some interesting comments on who our new, as yet unknown, AD for the Kea’au campus might be; hopefully, KS ‘politics’ will not get in the way as it sometimes does.

And he wishes the Tsaikos well; he had some nice comments of ST. A good man, we’ll miss him, & he did set a good athletic foundation for our small school.

Now that summer school is over for me, I’m ready for a Big Island CC or get-together. A potluck as a starter would be nice, then I’d get to taste all of the different stuff our neighbor island group can put together.

Finally….BIK: my wife taught at Ka’u HS from 1989s-1992 until she got transferred to Hilo HS, + her family is originally from Waiohinu. We have to sit down one day & talk story!
