Tuesday

The Warriors will have to navigate wet weather this week in preparation for Saturday’s game against Tulane.

• David Graves, in his first full practice as the No. 1 quarterback, went through the menu of offensive plays without any problems. The bigger test is tomorrow, when the practice session expands to 2 hours. (The first hour of today’s practice was spent in video reviews and strategy meetings.)

• Dee Maggitt worked as the No. 1 cornerback. It was only to give rest to cornerback Mike Edwards. Maggit has emerged as the top nickelback.

• Darius Bright still isn’t 100 percent, so Trevor Davis took all of the first-team reps at left wideout.

• Tulane is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu today.

    DPK,

Ending the BCS system will not end conference realignment. AQ schools are moving to other AQ conferences and in EVERY case they are going to a conference with a lot more regular season TV money. Utah didn’t leave the MWC for the Pac-12 for AQ status! Regular season TV money matters, not AQ status. Pac-12 schools normally get less than $1 mil/year more from the BCS than MWC schools, that means nothing compared to $20+ mil difference in regular season TV money. The schools leaving for the Big East know that AQ status could go away, but what they are focusing on is that the Big East’s current TV deal is a lot more than the MWC’s horrible deal, and the Big East is negotiating a new TV contract now that could get a lot more money.

The proposed end of the BCS system (except for maybe the plus-1 for a national title game) sounds nice in theory, but when you look at how the powers-that-be are trying to arrange things I am not convinced that UH would benefit. If we just look at this from a UH-centric view, some things do not look good to me.

For example, the plan shown in SI that gives the bowls the right to pick from a pool of teams sounds nice in theory…but then you look at how it is set up and you might notice that the plan has NONE of the non-AQ teams chosen for BCS bowls! The SEC would get 3 or more BCS spots, the Big 10, Pac-12, and Big 12 would get 2 or more spots…and the Big East and non-AQ schools could be completely shut out of all BCS bowls.

The bowls would like this–the BCS system gets its money from its TV contract and the TV ratings for the BCS games that Boise State, Utah, and UH played in are all on the bottom 10 in BCS bowl history. The big conferences sell more tickets, get more TV viewers, and reality is that the 3rd place SEC and Big 10 schools get higher TV ratings than undefeated Boise State or UH teams get.

To make the math simple, I’m going to say that each AQ conference gets $20 mil. It used to be $18 mil but has gone up–I’ve read that it could be up to $21 mil, but I’ll use $20 mil for simple numbers.

If they end the current system and let the bowls choose from a pool of the top 12 or 16 teams, UH loses out in a lot of ways. First, that ends the $10 mil that the non-AQ schools get automatically from the BCS to split. That also ends the $10 mil that is earned when a non-AQ school gets to a BCS game. Under the current system, Boise State or Houston will get an automatic BCS bowl spot…under the plan published in SI, neither would be in a BCS bowl this season!

UH and every non-AQ team lose big under that system and the SEC, Big 10, Pac-12, and Big 12 get even more money. Notre Dame at 7-5 will get more TV viewers and sell more tickets than an undefeated UH…letting the bowls choose who they want is not good for UH.

Best of luck to David Graves in his first start for the Warriors! I hope that he tears up the Tulane D and earns many more starts for the Warriors.

John Lister and Kenny Estes left the Fresno Stae game because of wooziness.

Bad news about needing to replace key special teams players, but I’m sure that there are many players who want those spots.

East Carolina’s AD says that the MWC/CUSA merger is still on. Interestingly, he says that both the MWC and CUSA will have 9 teams, which means that CUSA might not add anyone and the MWC might only add 1 school if the Big East stuff happens. So, it might be SJSU or USU, not both, to the MWC.

ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard says the merger between Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference should be completed by January.

Ballard made the prediction during a trustees meeting Monday.

The realigned conference will consist of 18 institutions: 9 from the east and 9 from the west.

Ballard said ECU has not withdrawn its bid for the Big East yet.

BYU’s TV demands might kill their deal with the Big East…and SDSU is ready to replace them. That would be horrible for the MWC and UH…and me personally, as I want UH and SDSU to be in the same conference!

Sources familiar with the negotiations told The Tribune on Monday that talks between BYU and the Big East are continuing but that there are “some stumbling blocks” that could lead the league to look at another Western school, perhaps San Diego State, as a traveling partner for Boise State because the Aztecs don’t carry as much TV baggage as BYU.

Apparently, BYU wants to retain its home television rights through its eight-year arrangement with ESPN that allows the broadcast sports giant to televise all but one BYU home football game per season with an estimated payout of between $1 million and $2 million per game. The deal with ESPN allows BYU’s own network, BYUtv, to broadcast the one game not picked up by ESPN and also allows the Cougars to show replays of all their ESPN broadcasts — home or away — on BYUtv.

  7. Garret November 22, 2011 7:25 am

The Deseret News seems to confirm what the Salt Lake Tribune wrote…and we know who owns the Deseret News.

“BYU officials rejected the reported deal,” said Williams. “The Big East and the BYU lawyers keep working on a deal. … Both sides want a deal and are working to get it done. That is where it is now.

“BYU has been accepted by the Big East members in a preliminary vote, with San Diego State as a backup ready to go,” Williams continued. “They are keeping everything quiet in hopes of getting a deal done within 10 days or less. If it can’t get done, then San Diego State is in.”

“Boise State has agreed to accept San Diego State as the western partner required by the Idaho Board of Education for Boise State to join. SMU, Houston, UCF and Navy have agreed to all terms to enter as soon as Boise enters,” the C-USA source said.

If La Tech will accept the Poinsettia bid soon, that would leave Utah State or Nevada for the Hawaii Bowl if UH doesn’t win the next 2 games. UH needs to win the next 2 games!

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will receive an invitation to play in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl if they beat New Mexico State Saturday at home.

The Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21 matches a first pick from the Western Athletic Conference against a second pick from the Mountain West. A Bulldogs victory Saturday would give them a seven-game winning streak and a share of the WAC championship.

They likely would play Texas Christian (9-2) or Boise State (9-1), maybe even San Diego State (6-4) or Wyoming (7-4).

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

What is the practice schedule like for this week with Thanksgiving on Thursday?? I am thinking something would be different since they moved the Na Koa lunch to today.

  13. Garret November 22, 2011 7:36 am

Even though Tulane has been *horrible* this season, things are looking up for their future. They will hire a new football coach after this season, and that coach will be able to tell recruits that Tulane will be getting a new on-campus stadium in time for the 2013 season!

Tulane’s stadium will cost just $60 mil and seat 30,000 people. Having a smaller on-campus stadium makes a LOT more sense for them than playing in the dome where their crowd looks (and is) so tiny.

Something good is coming to Uptown New Orleans. Although Tulane won’t make it official until early next month, the Green Wave athletic department just eclipsed a $40 million fundraising goal and will proceed with an on-campus football stadium.

Athletic Director Rick Dickson has been quietly raising tens of millions of dollars for the Green Wave to get back to playing its games in Uptown. Saints owner Tom Benson is in for $5 million. Another NFL team owner, Malcolm Glazer of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is also a major contributor. Benson’s gift, by the way, put Tulane over the top of their fund raising goal.

The stadium is being designed by the world class architectural firm of HOK out of Kansas City. The open-air stadium, expected to cost close to $60 million, will seat 30,000 fans.

    http://www.abc26.com/news/newswithatwist/newswithaview/wgno-a-new-football-stadium-for-tulane-20111114,0,5321578.column

  14. Garret November 22, 2011 7:41 am

SDSU has been openly asking the Big East to add them. If BYU insists on keeping the TV rights to their home games, then SDSU will get that spot. SDSU apparently doesn’t mind being the backup choice for the Big East…their leadership really wants out of the MWC. FOIA documents showed how SDSU even resorted to putting down BYU since they knew that conferences wanted BYU more.

If UH plays at SDSU next year as is scheduled then SDSU joins the Big East in 2013, SDSU may never take that return trip to Aloha Stadium.

    Good Morning Gangeez:)!

Such great posts made on yesterblog, that I dragged my own post over to restate:

Thanks for the reply Garret. I suspected as much, but as usual you have it down to brass tacks and hard facts. In the end, it’s going to be about money. *tsigh*

Thank you bulla, for your fine posts. Always proud of the Warriors, win or lose. I think of little kids after their first Pop Warner games, and the very special kind of joy it brought them. Then I think of this year’s Seniors, most going into their last two, God willing, three games. The joy of those little Pop Warner players is still there, in bodies and and hearts made so much bigger by the game they love.

Thank you also, Pomai. For love of the game. Four very profound words, words which mean so much, until money shows up. I cite the NBA non-season for example. Millionaires arguing with billionaires, but in the end, where is the love?

Who would you like to see in the MWC if a replacement is needed. SJSU or USU?

  23. Bowwar November 22, 2011 8:58 am

#13: Why can’t we do what Tulane is doing and raising the funds for an reasonable “on-campus” football stadium. Granted, the “price of building” is higher in Hawaii, but if they can build something for $60 million, I would assume we could do so for $90 million if the effort was raised…

  25. lanikailad November 22, 2011 9:13 am

I’ve been a lurker since the inception, reading virtually all posts every day. I’ve not posted until today because I’ve not felt that I’ve had anything to add. However, the resurgence of the idea for an on campus stadium has prompted me to state my view. The major thrust of the argument for such a stadium, as I understand it, is that it will result in more students attending the games. That same argument was advanced for the SSC, and, although the SSC is a good facility, it has not resulted in a great influx of students at least for men’s basketball.

  26. huh? November 22, 2011 9:14 am

I don’t think we’ll ever see an on campus football stadium.

There’s just no room unless half of lower Manoa/Moilili is “condemned” by the state so that more square footage may be consumed for such a project. I can imagine all the protests.

  28. huh? November 22, 2011 9:21 am

We should do what they did at Stanford University.

When in 2005, they went to work on their new stadium immediately after the last game of the season. Ten months later the new stadium was selling hotdogs and beer. Some delays due to inclement weather pushed the planned opening back one week.

Looks like Tulane is not raising funds for their stadium with five and ten dollar donations. Five millions here, five million there goes a long way is reaching your fund raising goals.

  31. HawaiiMongoose November 22, 2011 9:25 am

If both the MWC and CUSA stay at nine members following the planned Big East raid, it’s possible UTEP will move over to play football in the MWC, which means the addition would be to CUSA rather than the MWC. So it wouldn’t be SJSU or USU. It could be LaTech, Temple, Florida International, or North Texas.

Of course if SDSU leaves (which I agree with Garret would be horrible) then the MWC will definitely have to add either SJSU or USU. My preference would be SJSU since that would be easier travel for Hawaii.

  32. Old Diver November 22, 2011 9:27 am

Stanford’s stadium will be hard to duplicate here. Their stadium was build in a big dirt hole with wooden seats which were then replaced with aluminum still in that big dirt hole.

  33. Bowwar November 22, 2011 9:34 am

UH needs to drive its own destiny and if Football continues to be its major source of revenue for the Athletic program then they need to invest in an on-campus stadium. We often forget, athletics is supposed to be be a part of the academic experience at UH. When I attended UH in the 70s, going to the football games at Honolulu Stadium was part of my school experience and the 20-25,000 fans made for a rousing good time.

  39. Mad Dog November 22, 2011 9:44 am

My dream idea for an on-campus football/multi purpose stadium is a domed facility to reduce noise complaints from the neighbors, a rail station at the stadium entrance, and raised expressways with no exits/on ramps directly from the stadium to past Nuuanu and another one from the stadium to Kahala Mall.

Anybody know anyone with a couple of billion dollars they want to donate to the cause?

I remember when the tailgate portion of gameday was a great experience. You had keg parties, live music, people walking around the parking lot and enjoying themselves- good times! Then, you would go into the stadium feeling good and keep rockin’ til the Warriors (or Bows back then) brought home the victory.

Nowadays, all we get is security everywhere telling us to keep calm and quiet, sit down, don’t have fun- it’s ridiculous.

  42. Mad Dog November 22, 2011 10:03 am

The student section used to rock when the kids were allowed to sneak beverages into the stadium. For the last two games, the student section was a wasteland.

  43. SteveM November 22, 2011 10:08 am

    Good morning everyone!

    RE: #41

Jack Flash – I remember those days in the 80’s too. Big family tailgate (uncles, aunts, and cousins) in one area and friends/buddies in another. Dinner at 6:00, clean up and head into the stadium for the 7:30 pm game. It was evening and there was a carnival-like atmosphere in the stadium.

Didn’t matter how the team was doing–always get chance, right? The tailgate parties was the place to be on Saturday night. The original block party. Lot of people didn’t have tickets, but most decide to buy at the last minute. The stadium was was electric.

    Times change. 🙁

    From earlier this AM:

    Bulla:

    November 22nd, 2011 at 5:07 am

    good morning everyone,

the sun is still going to rise today….. how nice. no matter what we think, write or say….the sun is still going to rise today. and on the next 2 saturdays, aloha stadium, whether we are in the stands or not, is going to have a football game…..and despite what our opinions are…. there will be approximately 105+ young men dressed in green and black, playing the game they love, in the state they love, for the people they love. might we reciprocate to these athletes just a little love.

coaching is coaching, we all have our opinions, but let me ask everyone…..what did the players do to you, to me, to us……to lose our support? starting last spring, during the summer, then fall camp to now, the players have not stopped going to practice, the players have not stopped attending meetings, the players have not stopped training with coach tommy, the players have not stopped going to get rehab treatments from the trainers, the players have not stopped going to classes, the players have not stopped doing their homework, the players have not stopped strapping it up every Saturday…….

so I ask again, what have the players done to us……..I know what they have done, they have received all the support and lack of support from a state filled with fair weather fans at best, they have received all of the posts that have been written here and other web sites, they have received all of the cheers and the jeers from ‘their’ fans, they have received all of the blocks, hits, and injuries on the field, they have received all of the confusions surrounding the football program at UH currently.

i wonder, is it just too hard to just support ‘our boys’ these last two games, is it just too hard to be encouraging instead of discouraging, is it just too hard to be grateful for their collective efforts, is it just too hard to find something good to say about our players, is it just too hard to lay down the endless tirades and write about the good that our players have done and the good that they have in them? they should feel no shame for wearing the green and black, they should feel no shame for representing the 808, they should feel no shame for sacrificing their bodies for the game they love, they should feel no shame……period.

we can write all we want, talk all we want, discuss all we want, argue all we want, and insult all we want about anything for we have proven it on the WB. Might I suggest that we turn to the positive, for the players’ sake, and be more supportive of THEM, not the coaches or administration, but for THE PLAYERS.

i put this out today not to offend anyone, but to just ask if anyone remembers how this blog started, the flavor, the gist, the overall aroma of what we shared way back when…..have we progressed to a better place, or have we regressed to a place we never thought we’d be? just a thought, but I am going to try and be supportive of the Warriors of 2011, be positive for the Warriors of 2011 and be appreciative of the Warriors of 2011.

Blessings to one and all, and in this week of Giving Thanks, oooops, I mean Thanksgiving, I am grateful for all of the WB ohana, my ohana, the air I breathe, but I am also grateful for the young men that wear the green and black and proudly say that they are WARRIORS. Mahalo boys, for giving an old guy something to cheer about and something to be proud of. IMUA LANAKILA

One more thing- if some of you think banning alcohol will lead to less drunks at the stadium, trust me, it doesn’t work. Fans who want to drink at games ALWAYS find ways to sneak alcohol in. Ask anyone who’s been to an SEC or Big 10 game. If anything, the drunks are worse because they sneak in whiskey and bourbon rather than just drink beer.

There is no chance of any dormant volcano on Oahu to erupt, nor is there a chance for any NEW volcanoes either. The primary hot spot that started the Hawaiian Island chain is right under the Big Island.

As the Pacific Plate moves in a North-Westerly direction there will be more Hawaiian Islands since the hot spot is stationary.

Most of the land ewa of the Quarry is Bishop Estate property – as is the Varsity Theatre area all the way to where Teddy’s Burger is located.

If a deal can be made whereby UH can provide tuition waiver, books etc for Hawaiian students (Hawaiian-like those in Kamehameha) , you would have the land necessary for all sorts of infrastructure.

I think right now, the UH job, at the current salary, is a great, great job. It’s in paradise, with the backing of an entire state.

But at, maybe, $400,000 or $500,000, where you can get fired a year after winning 10 games, not such a great job. For us working Joes, heck, that would be great pay. But not for a current mainland head coach.

Does anyone know what time the Warriors practice on Thanksgiving Day? I’ll enjoy watching Graves getting reps to take on Tulane. The begining of a new QB era, maybe?

  66. Warrior Mojo November 22, 2011 11:10 am

Yep, still go to all games as well. Two or three more chances to Kaniela, Vaughn, Richard, AB, Royce, etc. I ain’t missing that.

    Bulla:

I support the players, but truly disappointed when a player does not, for whatever reason, fulfill his responsibilty. Just an observation; not critical of a player.

Many may not agree with me, but in the Army if a unit is tasked to pull a “feint” and does not do it well, it increases the emenies opportunity of success against US Forces. It’s a TEAM effort and like the spokes of a wheel, a weak one will eventually lead to the descruction of said wheel.

In football, it’s the coaches responsibility to strengthen the particular “spoke” so he will truly become a contributing member of the team! Team members can also contribute to making that player stronger, better.

So, is it the coach or player or both?

Perception can be very negative or equally positive.

Hawaii will qualify for and win the bowl game!!!!!!!!

An on-campus stadium might make sense for UH if most of the students lived in dorms, but they don’t. Most are commuters and probably live closer to Halawa than Manoa. Given that, and the traffic issues, I can’t see an on-campus stadium happening.

  77. kev-1 November 22, 2011 12:12 pm

What ever happened to Abercrombie’s suggestion that UH control the stadium? Didn’t he make some vague promise about that?

  78. kev-1 November 22, 2011 12:13 pm

or am i remembering wrong? Just figured if he can FORCE teachers to accept a contract, shouldn’t he be able to force the stadium into the hands of UH?

  79. Uce 2 November 22, 2011 12:14 pm

Colt is the man! He is a god. Until Colt, Hawaii sucked. Yeah, right. Okay. Now we are hearing Groves is the man. He is like Colt. If Colt is so great, then why is he not playing on Sunday? Maybe all the NFL coaches are not too smaht, huh? That was for the local intellectuals who post here, including DPK. I’m waiting for the regents to grow some _alls and to do the right thing. Start by replacing MRC, followed by Donovan, and ending with Mac and his inept staff. Hire locals, and hire locally. Why do the local people continue to have the inferiority complex their parents had from the plantation days, that only “mainland” people can lead the UH and be head coaches. Ok. Said my two cents. Once these changes occur, UH will then become great again. Until then, get used to losing, alot.

Don’t want to offend anyone, but an “on campus” stadium probably has no chance to be built, but, if one were built, what will happen with Aloha stadium and the Pro Bowl. Would Aloha be demolished? If it is, then I believe the Pro Bowl will go to Miami every year.

  92. madeinhawaii November 22, 2011 1:10 pm

The only thing that bring me down more than a 0 win season for our Warriors would be a season without our Warriors. Hope that never happens. In that light, I’m really glad for what we have.

  94. Garret November 22, 2011 1:20 pm

    Garret,

Who would you like to see in the MWC if a replacement is needed. SJSU or USU?

    Old Diver,

SJSU for a lot of reasons:

    1. UH targets recruits in Northern California, so playing a game there every other year is very important for UH on the field. UH doesn’t recruit anywhere near Logan, UT.

    2. UH has a large alumni chapter in the Bay Area and gets a good turnout of UH fans for every SJSU game. UH has a MUCH smaller alumni presence/turnout in Logan, UT.

    3. UH has to pay $150k in travel subsidies for SJSU and $175k in travel subsidies for Utah State. So, SJSU saves UH money.

    4. Travel expenses and travel time are a *lot* lower for UH to go to San Jose than Logan, UT. Much better for UH’s student-athletes and much better for UH’s expenses.

    5. I get to go to games in San Jose and I don’t get to go to games in Logan. The only UH football game in San Jose that I missed over the past 14 years is the one from this season, and I already had my trip planned before they moved the game to a Friday.

I think that both SJSU and Utah State will eventually get into the MWC, especially if SDSU leaves. Craig Thompson has clearly said that the MWC wants to eliminate the WAC as a football conference, so taking schools from the WAC is what the MWC wants to do.

  99. Garret November 22, 2011 1:28 pm

It doesn’t matter what Abercrombie wants. The UH administration has already told the legislature they don’t want to take over the stadium.

Old Diver is correct. Old stadiums without luxury boxes cost too much to maintain. The millions needed to keep Aloha Stadium usable would result in UH losing a LOT of money if UH took over the stadium. With certain required maintenance things being pushed back, the financial situation for Aloha Stadium is that much worse.

I am glad that Don Weir is going for a spot on the Aloha Stadium Authority. He will do a great job there and will also look out for UH’s interests. Improving Aloha Stadium is in UH’s best interest, especially if UH doesn’t have to pay for the upgrades.

  100. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 1:30 pm

This guy is being underutilized on the Seattle Seahawk staff. Has a solid coaching background at USC coaching the secondary and as DC. Maybe he could be interested in coming here. Lots of energy, real hands on type of defensive coach.

    http://www.seahawks.com/team/coaches/rocky-seto/19bf3adb-5c6f-4a99-94cb-e7dfd631bda0

  101. Garret November 22, 2011 1:33 pm

Schools that have on-campus stadiums and keep the stadium revenue pay for the stadiums themselves and they pay for ALL the maintenance. Tulane is doing that. Stanford did that. Texas does that. SMU did that. They get $0 from tax money for their stadiums.

The biggest problem for UH building an on-campus stadium, even bigger than the traffic issue (which would kill the stadium project anyway) is that UH doesn’t have the money and doesn’t have close to the donor support to pay for an on campus stadium. Asking the state to pay for the stadium and give all the money to UH is not feasible, if UH wants the revenue from the stadium then UH has to pay for the stadium and the maintenance.

Given the traffic issues and the fact that UH is a commuter school, the best place for Aloha Stadium is where it is now. Downtown would be a traffic nightmare and space is a huge problem, out west where Kekoa suggest would hurt attendance and cause traffic issues, Halawa is an ideal compromise for traffic and commute time.

  103. Stephen Tsai November 22, 2011 1:38 pm

Don’t know if an on-campus stadium is necessary.

Just need a good stadium with clear sight lines and hard-back seats.

Pillars and bleachers would not be a good thing.

  104. Garret November 22, 2011 1:41 pm

Interesting article from CBS Sports about what is going on in the Big East. *No* school in any D-IA conference retains their home TV rights–UH only gets TV rights to games that the national TV channels don’t want. BYU’s lawyers are apparently overruling their AD and football coach on this. If this continues, SDSU will join the Big East…

“I doubt BYU will happen,” a college football industry source told CBSSports.com. “They are being extremely unreasonable all of a sudden. This is one reason why they did not get into the Big 12. Their general counsel (lawyers) is a piece of work.”

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe and coach Bronco Mendenhall are said to favor a move to the Big East, but BYU President Cecil Samuelson and the school’s general counsel haven’t been as receptive. That is unless the Cougars can retain their home television rights, which is unheard of for a conference school.

If BYU doesn’t join the Big East, the league could target San Diego State as a football-only member. Two weeks ago, a source told CBSSports.com the Aztecs were pursuing a football-only membership with the Big East.

Houston, SMU, UCF and Boise State are committed to joining the Big East. Navy also has told those four schools, who CBSSports.com reported were working in concert to join the league, it also is committed to the Big East. With those five schools, the league will still need two more football schools to get to a 12-team league – which the league hoped would be Air Force and BYU.

  105. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 1:44 pm

Another option is to simply rebuild Aloha Stadium, as pointed out, the location is prime from a traffic POV.

If an on-campus stadium is ever built, it will have to be funded by an aggressive fund raising drive, generous donations (financial, construction labor, and materials). That way, no one can complain. If not that, then a football complex would add a lot to recruiting.

  106. Da Punchbowl Kid November 22, 2011 1:45 pm

    Uce 2 –

You have no idea what I think, so I don’t know why you’re using my name to make your points. So what if I thought Colt was good and did a lot of great things for our program? So do a lot of other people. If he never make the NFL, that just means he never made the NFL. I don’t like him any more or any less because of that. Better luck to any ex-Warrior who wants to play on Sundays and all the best to those who play now. Is that okay with you?

As for all the rest of your ideas, the only thing I’ve suggested to others is wait until season pau before getting to hard about things, a lot of other people have said the same thing. At this point I could care less, because I have my own feelings about the situation but I keep them personal. You might be surprised at how much of I may agree with how you feel, but if you gotta call me out about it, that’s just wrong and you’re barking up the wrong tree.

No get mad if we all don’t agree with you. Personally, I learn a LOT from the posts here, negative and positive, even yours. Like I have said before, its all about timing.

I like what I see of Graves, but I’m very interested in how the QB competition shapes up in the spring. Is there something wrong with that? I just want to see the best guy on the field and see Warriors winning. No more, no less.

Local intellectual? Trust me, I’m nobody, cuz. Just a guy who loves the Warriors.

Let me know when you want to have lunch. I’d truly love to hear your thoughts.

  107. Garret November 22, 2011 1:47 pm

If SDSU goes to the Big East, their non-football teams will be in the Big West. I guess either way, UH will be paying travel subsidies to them.

I’d actually get to see more UH games in San Diego if SDSU goes to the Big East for football…I didn’t realize that until now and now I’m kind of conflicted about SDSU’s decision.

  108. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2011 2:03 pm

Bring on them SDSU basketball credits. Welcome, welcome, welcome. Travel subsidies? Sure, no problem.

A little sidestep from the topic of new stadiums.

The team that #2’s Wildcats just beat on Saturday had been hoping to host at least one playoff game in their new stadium. When you look at their website and see the renderings it is a beautiful facility.

Apparently during construction it was discovered that one of the ligh poles couldn’t be placed as planned so changes were made during construction…..

The light pole ended up in the middle of the bleachers right in front of the Press Box! 😆

Y’all got my groove on. I aspire to someday be a Tsaiko, not to bash, but to embrace the green. No matter what, there are local boys under those helmets who deserve aloha from the Aloha State. Go, go, go no matter what the score. By coincidence I had lunch with coach Mac about a year ago. He is a good man with lots of aloha for the school and his players. Should he be head coach? I don’t know, but I do know the head coach should care as much for his school and players as he does. I will always believe in the great spirit of our people and our players to make decisions that make us better inside, as well as, outside the lines. I don’t know what is right, but I hope it is right.

the point shaving thing could be all BS really. An anonymous letter? Unnamed players? Too vague. Could be a disgruntled fan who has lost a lot of money gambling on UH football and mailed an anonymous letter to the admin. In reality, that’s all this is. Right now at least.

  130. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2011 2:19 pm

that being said, this is sick if its true, its sick if its false.

  131. kev-1 November 22, 2011 2:19 pm

  132. UHbacker November 22, 2011 2:20 pm

UH football program really needs an overhaul, enough is enough!

It’s bad enough they can’t win and attendance is in the toilet!!!

  133. Kevin November 22, 2011 2:20 pm

    Hold on…

    1) WTF???????? REALLY? Does UH athletics need this crap right now?

    2) Why is it irresponsible? To report incidents that are corrborated? The article is not saying UH players did for sure, the article states someone sent a letter and there is an investigation. That’s it.

jeezy . . . I’m not naive, nor completely discrediting the report. I’m just not ready to yell out guilty when all of the evidence is labeled as anonymous.

I agree with you that there are problems that need to be fixed. If these allegations are true it is just another example of leadership concerns that a lot of people have. There definitely seems to be some kind of disconnect between the football program and the school that needs to be repaired. The alma mater, possible point shaving, etc. These are all problems that need to be addressed.

I remember that when the new UA uniforms came out that the coach made a huge deal about demanding that the word HAWAII be put on the front of the jersey, because “that’s who we play for.” Well, seems like the coach just latched on to that as some sort of pledge to the community, when reality is the word HAWAII has been on the front of the teams unis before.

All of that said, the story is too premature to call for a lynching.

  146. Jeezy33 November 22, 2011 2:32 pm

  154. Bryson November 22, 2011 2:36 pm

I would hate to find out the cause of these allegations are someone who lost money on UH or even worse someone who wants to push the fire Mack issue further…

  155. Kevin November 22, 2011 2:38 pm

    Timing… all about timing.

If true… what a coincidence considering the ramifications the head coach will come under. NOT like the Penn State situation at all, but still the man at the front of the program will bear the weight as well as the guilty parties.

If FALSE, the individual that sent the letter knew what he/she was doing.

    It’s ALL about the timing….

Great, I hope all the “alleged” folks decide to buy seats to the Waterhouse Football Awards Banquet. They should really thank the players too.

  158. Ipu Man November 22, 2011 2:39 pm

kitv likes to suggest a “guilty” verdict before the facts are in.

I remember how they lambasted a responsible Honolulu hard

working citizen a few years back only to have a jury prove him

innocent…and kitv nary said a word after that. His reputation

was somewhat tarnished because of their slanderous reporting.

But he is still doing tremendous things for the community and

If guilty, that person or persons need to be punished accordingly..

Because if true, us fans got cheated big time

  165. Calvin from Kona November 22, 2011 2:42 pm

I have been wondering out loud in regards to these allegations. Aside from an offensive player or two I also believe a couple key defenders are involved (without naming names). If you follow betting lines and performances Hawaii is a great team for gambling houses lately. Especially last years Hawaii Bowl, the UNLV game and the Utah State game. I hpoe it isn’t true but my money is on the investigation turning up the worst.

    PowderPuff,

My hula sister and her friend were celebrating one of their birthdays and they wanted to do something new & different. They decided to go to the Na Koa lunch, since my hula sister is such a big fan. She said now is the time to show the support when the team is down. She always makes lei for the Coach. Has had 4 season tickets for years, although we had to give away our tickets for the 10/22 game since we were dancing in our halau’s show that night. 🙁

Told her about joining Na Koa which I’m sure she’ll do.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  169. Warrior Mojo November 22, 2011 2:45 pm

Wel, i’m on my cell in kona, but all I saw on the kitv site was that an anpny, ous letter was sent with claims against unidentified playets. Not much to go on. How is.mack involved other than being head coach?

  170. Dan-O November 22, 2011 2:47 pm

IF…..found true, would explain the on-field performances. However, it would cripple our football program for years to come. Mack and staff would be gone….and who knows, maybe even our Mountain West membership could be pulled.

  171. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2011 2:47 pm

    #170,

Don’t matter if he is directly or not. He is the captain of the ship. If it were true, hes gone.

The criminal charges would no affect him, but the NCAA has this small like fetish about hammering the little guys to make a point while letting the big boys go with a slap on the ass.

If this is true, we are screwed.

Seems like more than 1 player was named in the letter…

I don’t think Jeezy is being a troll. I actually think that he/she is saying SOME really positive things. If someone is commiting a crime, that should be justly punished, regardless of their position in society. Fighting (outside of a ring), point shaving, gambling, etc should not be condoned just because of how much we love the warriors.

  177. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 2:50 pm

Reminds me of the 1973 season when similar allegations were made after the Pacific game by the Tiger’s HC Chester Caddas. That’s also when the starting UH quarterback got into a fight with some teammates, along with his dad and subsequently quit the team along with the team’s #1 receiver.

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/11/22/1889835/ap-source-byu-big-east-end-negotiations.html

So the bad news is, SDSU may be leaving the MWC for football.

The good news is, SDSU may join the Big West for all other sports, significantly improving its standing as a basketball conference.

  188. kev-1 November 22, 2011 2:58 pm

My goodness people. If there is an investigation going on, the media has the right and responsibility to report it. Get over your blind loyalty and at least see it as simply a media report. As much as I enjoy reading different opinions on this blog, sometimes it is hard to overcome the defensiveness that permeates among some.

Innocent until proven guilty. No need bash journalists for doing their job and reporting an investigation. If it proves unfounded, good. If it is true, shame on those involved.

BTW, anyone know how I can get in on the action so I can make a little money this weekend?

  189. Ipu Man November 22, 2011 3:00 pm

  190. HawaiiMongoose November 22, 2011 3:01 pm

  193. Pomai November 22, 2011 3:03 pm

Some people need to chill out. Wait till things are confirmed and proven before you throw the team under the bus. I hate when people take something said by some anonymous source and run with it. Funny thing is why would it be anonymous if someone had the facts to support it man up, put your name out there.

You see the problem is with these type of things is that the accused is named and even if they are found not to have done anything their name is still tarnished.

  194. kev-1 November 22, 2011 3:06 pm

Pomai . . . so far the accused have not been named. As a matter of fact, they weren’t even named in the letter, according to UH.

  199. Buffoman November 22, 2011 3:08 pm

So does BYU choose to stay an independent to hold on to their television deal? If it makes them money and they don’t have a problem scheduling games, why not? Money talks and you know what walks. I guess we will keep scheduling BYU, huh?

I am still wondering if we’re having to pay for travel subsidies for everyone, including the “East” conference in the new alignment.

  200. d1shima November 22, 2011 3:08 pm

  205. Don Weir November 22, 2011 3:17 pm

‘Reminds me of the 1973 season’

The QB was Casey Ortiz (deceased) and the WR was Allan Brown. They did not get into a fight with teammates. Teammates confronted them with the ‘inside view’ after the game and the QB mouthed off. He was silenced and a very strong request was made for the two to leave town: that night. That request was reinforced by Onosai Tanuvasa (may he rest in peace).

Both left without cleaning out their lockers and many of their belongings in dorms of Hale Anuenue. Thus, the situation was handled ‘in house’.

This was a situation quite similar that Ortiz and his father had fostered at SMU and were asked to leave.

  206. Warrior Mojo November 22, 2011 3:19 pm

Well, thinking about it analytically, there is only one position that has to be involved IF there is any truth to these allegations. And if THAT’S true, then a story I heard about something that happened after the unlv game is really starting to bother me.

  207. Pomai November 22, 2011 3:19 pm

kev-1 yeah they did name names 119 players and 19 coaches and staff.

  208. maddog50 November 22, 2011 3:20 pm

This is simple…this team should be 8-3 at the least. Special teams contributed to losses and field position, which in turn caused problems. Injury further compounded problems in the OL and receivewr corp. Play selection, clock and field management ie. time outs created problems. The most glaring issue is tackling….tackiling angles and defensive team speed, some of which is injury related. I am a Warrior FAN I live eat and breath Warrior Football. Criticism is good for growth….I do not advocate a HC coaching change at this time but I do advocate some kind of upgrade….this team….these kids are better than what has occurred. I do not have answers….I do know one thing, assume good intent. The effort of these players should be unquestioned….the effort of these coaches is nothing but good…take a step back and do what you need to do to get better…..the worst thing you can do as a coach is put a player in a situation that he can not succeed in….the fans of Hawaii….you deserve better and you will get that in time…..take a step back—-it will come

  209. primo123 November 22, 2011 3:21 pm

very true, Pomai…by not mentioning a name…it just implicated the entire team and program..

  210. Warrior Expat November 22, 2011 3:22 pm

@207: Warrior Mojo, what story is that?

I think we need to all step back and remember that so far, these are simply unproven allegations that the police are looking into. There are a million explanations for the letter, and until we have more evidence, anything we say is nothing more than baseless speculation. I hope and pray there is no merit to this, but I think it is important for the police and the media to investigate and flesh out all the facts.

  211. Old Diver November 22, 2011 3:22 pm

Since when do we give credence to a letter anyone could have sent for who knows what reason. That said the police are obligated to investigate this matter even though it could be complete nonsense. In other words the HPD investigation is routine. I’m won’t get excited unless someone gets charged. If anything I would have guessed the point shaving allegation would have been against the poor officiating we have encountered this year. Team sports especially football are very difficult to cheat at. If you are playing poorly the coach will replace you, and if the coach don’t take you out Cory Paredes will clobber you for not playing hard. Of course if you believe there was point shaving you probably believe the broken bones, punctured lungs, concussions and the like are fake.

The truly objective view is not to pass judgment on this–one way or the other–before all the facts are in. That means not blindly rushing to accuse the players, and it also means not blindly rushing to defend the team and dismiss the allegations as unfounded. We simply do not yet know.

  216. Warrior Mojo November 22, 2011 3:27 pm

  218. Buffoman November 22, 2011 3:28 pm

Hey Garret, if there is some credence to this matter, does this adversely affect the UH’s membership in the MWC or has the ink dried on the membership and they’re stuck with us no matter what?

  221. Kevin November 22, 2011 3:36 pm

Can you imagine if this is B.S. though?

I wonder if UH’s legal team can sort a defamation of character-type lawsuit against said individual that generated the letter?

I mean either way, for this investigation to happen under Mack’s regime as HC is just devestating true or not. I have made it very clear I have lost confidence in Coach Mack’s ability to operate the duties of HC and I would prefer to see a change, BUT NOT LIKE THIS IF THE ACCUSATIONS ARE FALSE.

FURTHERMORE, THIS COULD NEGATIVELY IMPACT UH’S RELATIONSHIP WITH CORPORATE SPONSORS.

Im no legal expert but a defamation of character suit seems just in this case of the accusations being false right?

If proven false, UH needs to go on the OFFENSIVE against it’s accusor.

If they throw garbage in your backyard, set their house on fire and kill the family dog.

It just showed that the odds makers had UH a heavy heavy favorite. But for whatever reason, bets started to come in against Hawaii, so much so that it dropped to 700.

That is a significant drop…a VERY significant drop.

Lines move like +100/-100 if even that much.

  225. Warrior Expat November 22, 2011 3:40 pm

Kevin – If this all turns out to be a ploy, then there will be some serious repercussions for the false accuser (if we ever find him or her — might be hard because the letter was anonymous).

But until that time, UH cannot close ranks and start attacking the accuser. It needs to cooperate with the investigation and determine whether if there is any merit to these allegations. If so, it is as much interested in cleaning house as HPD is. UH as an institution cannot “choose sides” — its only obligation now is to the truth.

  226. LizKauai November 22, 2011 3:41 pm

    I concur 10000% with Kevin.

If this is some BS crackhead who either is a bitter gambler or a guy who just wants the coach out, I hope they go on the offensive big time.

WHEN this goes national, NOT IF, it’s going to harm us. Recruiting? Corporate Sponsors? Conference Realignment?

I don’t know if UH has ever hired a public relations firm for anything…this may be the time to spend $ we don’t have and hire one at this time.

As if we don’t already have internal problems. Damnit.

  230. Walter November 22, 2011 3:44 pm

    Warrior Expat,

No no no… I know UH cannot do anything UNTIL it’s been proven false, if that is the case.

Don, thanks for some insights to that incident. I just vaguely remember it being about Ortiz and Brown placing bets.

Don can you help me with something else during that time. None of my old cronies can remember this. there was a coach that Larry Price just hated. When talking about that coach I can remember Larry saying something like “if he gets in my way I’ll break his back”. The I’ll break his back comment has stuck in my mind. Do you recall Larry saying this about another coach?

  243. A-joe November 22, 2011 4:00 pm

False accusations made by a disgruntled gambler purely on circumstantial evidence.

The sad thing is, even after they’re found not guilty, UH will never have a chance to vindicate it’s name. The program will forever be tarnished with point shaving. That’s all people will choose to remember. Human nature.

  244. Walter November 22, 2011 4:02 pm

A-Joe, do you have proof that these are false accusations? Just wondering.

Why is everyone saying these are false accusations, irresponsible reporting, etc???

I am open to believe this could be true or false. But I am not gonna ignore this like it’s just a bunch of gamblers causing trouble…

Do u guys really think it’s just a few anonymous letters? Let’s get real guys. There is evidence. Obviously university is gonna release a sugar coated statement to buy time

  247. Bowwar November 22, 2011 4:14 pm

#178 & #206 – Old School and Don, I remember the Casey Ortiz and Allan Brown situation all too well. Hot shot QB and his receiver…It ruined the UH program at a time where there was hope for better things. Both left the State and I believe Ortiz got into problems elsewhere and passed away a few years ago.

I don’t like “anonymous” accusations and I hope this proves unfounded. However, I believe that before the HPD can move on something like this, I’m supposing that some collaborating evidence was provided. The eventual clincher will be any evidence that shows that money, profit or favor was given to individuals on the team…

Coach MACK and his staff will bear criticism for this, but the true losers in this case will be the team. I hope like the Ortiz case, that there is another Onosai on the team to uncover the perpetrators (if there are any) and ask them to leave the team…Afterall, if anyone is “selling” their loyalty for money or favor, they are surely NOT Warriors!

Till then, let’s leave the viral talk and let the investigation move forward. It’s all innocence until proven guilty…Don’t diss the team and coaches until all the facts are obtained. This Blog is not a court nor should we judge.

    IMUA Warriors!

  248. Bulla November 22, 2011 4:14 pm

just released that HPD investigation is done, not enough evidence…via KHON News…..let’s hope that this is over, and not just a tactic to lay a trap……..

    maddog50 Says:

    November 22nd, 2011 at 3:20 pm

    Amen. Amen.

  252. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 4:17 pm

Don, thanks for clarifying what happened back in 73. Read that Ortiz’s dad was always around the program and had rubbed some players the wrong way. I also read that Levi Stanley was kind of a peacemaker who prevented things from getting out of hand. Didn’t a certain backup quarterback (transfer from Oregon) also go AWOL for a few days after that incident? Again, this what I read from the newspapers back then (no internet).

  253. Kevin November 22, 2011 4:25 pm

I dunno about you guys, but I’m relieved for the time being.

Like I said, I don’t want Mack to resume as coach further and I cannot be more BLATANT than that, but it seems like some are just willing to WISH for the extra BS when it isn’t there.

I assume some will now call names on HPD for being under UH’s payroll on that?????

    Movin on…

  254. Dan-O November 22, 2011 4:26 pm

If some players are “injured” or missing from the game Saturday, we’ll know Meatoga and Company took control of the team.

  255. SteveM November 22, 2011 4:27 pm

    Point shaving?

Didn’t June Jones have a year where defensive players were found betting on the game….or was that Bob Wagner? Defensive players were betting that UH would win and make the point spread, but gambling was gambling.

I don’t think any athlete(s) goes out there to do less than his best, so point-shaving accusations sounds like sour grapes.

  256. Dan-O November 22, 2011 4:28 pm

One bad repercussion of a closed case due to lack of evidence……all the finger-pointing and accusations of individuals involved. Hope the team can STAY a team….

  257. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 4:29 pm

All it takes is ONE accusation and the program’s reputation can be tarnished. Back to the 73 season, I remember UOP coach Chester Caddas make some disparaging remarks about the UH program involving gambling and bookies in Chinatown (Don can correct me if I’m wrong). I believe that HPD did investigate, but nothing came about from that, but the reputation stuck for a long time. If I recall correctly, UH went up to Stockton the next year, with Larry Price now the HC, and beat UOP. The year after that was the major post game brawl at Aloha Stadium after UH again beat UOP.

  258. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 4:38 pm

Then again, the 73 team rallied and came back after all of those distractions and losing 2 games to defeat a heavily favored Utah team in the mud at Honolulu Stadium, 10-7. I think it was Tim Feigh who quarterbacked that game.

  259. kruzen November 22, 2011 4:43 pm

Why did they report the point shaving news without any follow up with HPD?

  260. Local November 22, 2011 4:46 pm

I know they say its done but I know that a father is being investigated for being a local bookie. That doesn’t mean that the player did shave points tho. Idk

  261. 808Bowler November 22, 2011 4:49 pm

Glad to hear the news. Would be crippling if was true.

  262. LizKauai (macbook) November 22, 2011 5:08 pm

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  263. Don Weir November 22, 2011 5:11 pm

    Old School Dave

Feigh came in earlier that year but but was supplanted by the up and coming Alex Kaloi who came in against Santa Clara and kept right on throwing the rest of the season. Alex could throw one sweet pass.

Chester Caddas recruited me but I waited for the visit from Cal Murphy (UH OC) and signed on the non-dotted line. I still have that agreement framed and on the wall.

Coach Price’s PRICELESS comment was related after he interviewed for the HC job. When asked how he coached defense and what he wanted out of the players Coach Price opened up his hand and then closed it with the statement “I want them to rip the heart out of the opposing player”.

He also was the one who taught me that my last name was two syllables WE AH!!!

  264. LizKauai (macbook) November 22, 2011 5:11 pm

Mahalo everyone for staying strong and united in our support for the Warriors…

I know you are out there lurking and praying.

Now is a good time to let the team feel your support and drown out the negativity just like we are going to do on SATURDAY NIGHT!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  265. AlaWai November 22, 2011 5:21 pm

Be cautious peeps. Big Brother will be watching every URL, Blog, Column etc. for any garbage that can be dug up. Your finger prints are all over the internet. Hate is a poison that spreads indiscriminately. I believe this is the last place where wild conjecture should be posted. If HPD feels this is not worth investigating, the only reason to continue it is a blatant hatred for the coach and lack of respect for the players on the team. I don’t believe the WB was meant for this. Let us Live Aloha!

  266. Glenn November 22, 2011 5:25 pm

  270. Bowwar November 22, 2011 5:35 pm

Seems like this has been mishandled by upper campus. Before releasing any statements they should have all the facts & consult with HPD. Somebody dropped the ball because how else can you explain the HPD statement of no investigation so soon after the press release. If we’re going to fire anyone, we should start with those who mishandled this.

  271. Pomai November 22, 2011 5:45 pm

Well If in fact HPD is not investigating this then they should turn around and find out who sent the letter and UH should sue this person to the max.

  272. 99club November 22, 2011 5:48 pm

Kevin, RE: translation of +1600 vs +700. +1600 moneyline bet means that if you bet $100 that UNLV was going to win the game, then the payout was $1600. If the odds went down to +700 (if true), then that would indicate a lot of cash bet on UNLV moneyline. Moneyline bets (betting that one team is going to just win the game) are the largest payout bets if one is betting on the underdog.

Hiding a horseracing fix in the daily double is tomorrow night’s discussion topic.

  273. 99club November 22, 2011 5:58 pm

HPD statement followed by UH statement followed by HPD statement.

The dog act is now in the center ring…

  274. A-joe November 22, 2011 6:10 pm

The damage has been done. People across the nation have already made their assumptions about UH. It’ll be tough to convince them otherwise. Try watch.

It’s human nature. Everyone wants a huge crash and burn! Even then it’s not big enough.

But, all of this goes well beyond our stupid bickering over wins and losses or who our head coach should be. It’s mind blowing how with just one click of someone’s “Enter” key, our integrity, our core beliefs, our very existence have been called out in the national media!

    All eyes are upon us!

How will YOU respond as a so called, “True Warrior Fan.”

    Will you stand up?

  275. PolyMom November 22, 2011 6:13 pm

@ #100 Old School Dave– do not think Rocky Seto would come to Hawaii. He and Pete are very close. You might say…they are thick as thieves. How do I know? Pete Carroll lives a few doors away from me in Hermosa Beach. All of Pete’s BOYS…would never leave unless they are fired. They are very very close. All of those coaches are VERY close. And they have their charity a Better LA that Pete founded for at youth risk kids.

Pete is a true motivator and inspiration to young people everywhere!!! When he rolls through Compton, Ingelwood, and all the Southside hoods, he changes so many lives. He really has made a Better LA for so many.

Stupid rumors are circulating- “you can find all the point shavers on the team just by looking at all the players driving new cars.”

  283. Ralph November 22, 2011 6:27 pm

Na Wahine down 2-0 in games to Fresno State. I hope they start playing up to their level or they may find themselves not hosting the first 2 post season games.

  284. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 6:34 pm

Thanks for your insight and stories, Don. Cal Murphy later went on to coach in the CFL, right? Saw an old program from the 73 UH season. Man, seems like everyone had a goatee mustache or an Afro (including Coach Lumpkin). Some mean and scary looking dudes on that UH team. Also a couple of future NFLers in Jeris White, Hal Stringert, and a scrawny looking lineman by the name of Dan Audick.

  285. Kekoa November 22, 2011 6:36 pm

I guess you are correct Garret. No chance of having a stadium built on the UH Wessai campus. But you know me, I like to kid around with folks. So just for kicks, let’s take a look at a few things we have going for us just in case they change their mind:

arrow: Where the dorms are being built would be purrfik.

➡ Plenny room for parking all around the campus. Parking structure for sure.

➡ Hwy access at North/South Road, Farrington Hwy, H-1, Kunia, Ewa and Kapolei Parkway will eventually extend to Ihi’lani and Au’lani. This will offer another route in from beyond Ihi’lani.

➡ On/off ramps at Waipahu, Waikele, Kunia, (present/future)Palehua, (present/future)Makakilo, Kapolei, Kalaeloa. Compare this to UH Manoa traffic. H-1 and side streets like University ave and such. Already maxed out.

➡ Plans in place for construction of the light rail terminus right near the UH campus. Lots of bus routes already encircle the new campus.

➡ New affordable housing being built right across the N/S road on the East side of the campus. Adjacent to that new community is the KROC Center scheduled to open in Jan. of 2012. You have the prototype there in San Diego. This one is larger.

➡ Huge new Shopping Mall that will rival Ala Moana under construction. Wal Mart opens soon enuff. New Foodland under construction…Safeway also one of the largest in the islands. Tarjay open already. KMart, Home Depot and the biggest Costco on island here in Kapolei.

➡ 100 million dollar Kapolei HS complex with a newly improved stadium. Elementary/Middle school expansion on-going.

➡ Thousands of homes already in place in the entire Ewa Plain… and more to come. Fan base?…Uhhh yeah.

(Oh yeah, I almost forgot the new FBI building. Dat buggah is larger than the J. Edgar Hoover building in DC!)

  286. Kekoa November 22, 2011 6:37 pm

Garret ~ You live in San Diego, CA so you know how tuff it is to get anywhere in traffic. I use to drive about 100 miles one way from where I lived in South Sacramento to attend a ball game at the Oakland stadium/arena. A bit further to go to the ‘Stick where both the 49ers and the Giants played.

My point is, we are on an island for Criss sake! What’s 30 or even 40 miles one way?! Local peeps drive from Waimanalo to Kapolei and think they need to find a Motel 6! Ahhh c’mon!

  287. jonj November 22, 2011 6:38 pm

  289. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 6:42 pm

Hi Polymom #227. Thanks for your comments on Rocky Seto. I was impressed by his enthusiasm and coaching style at USC and felt that he was an up-n-coming coach. I thought that Seto would take the Defensive Coordinator job at UW when offered by Sarkasian, but was surprised when he declined (his wife is from the Seattle area). He also turned down an assistant coaching job with the NFL Bills. Felt bad for him when he chose to stay at USC, and then wasn’t retained by Lane Kiffin. Now Seto is a quality control guy for the Seahawks. Actually a blessing that he didn’t get offered the UCLA DC job at RN is probably gone.

  290. Ralph November 22, 2011 6:46 pm

UH finally catches FSU, up 16-15 in game 3. Pressure? hope not, girls just need to play their game and win in 5.

Passing deserted them in the first 2 games, hopefully they can recover and win in 5.

  291. jm2375 November 22, 2011 6:47 pm

Glad to see this idiotic story is being put to rest (hopefully). For me, there were 3 red flags:

    1) anonymous sender

    2) no one specifically named

    3) letter sent to Office of Admissions

Office of Admissions? Really? WTH? Idiot doesn’t know the org structure of UH?

  292. Old School Dave November 22, 2011 6:48 pm

  300. Ralph November 22, 2011 7:03 pm

UH did the right thing, the letter was turned over to the HPD and the NCAA was notified. Alleged gambling claim shouldn’t have been an in house investigation only, HPD first, and then UH could do their own in house investigation.

  301. Ralph November 22, 2011 7:05 pm

@#291–Old School Dave..Lame Kiffen, oops I meant Lane Kiffin upset the Trojan family when he did not keep Rocky thus giving Pete the chance to take him to the Seahawks. I wish every Coach had the personality and the dynamic spirit like Pete Carroll. I mean if I had 20 million bucks to just give away I would give it to UH to bring Pete back to the islands. First he LOVES Hawaii and has a lovely home he bought on the North Shore. And Pete is always up for a good challenge. He is an incredible person. So good to all the keiki in Hermosa Beach. Heck on his way to work at Heritage Hall he stops at Java Man where us “Mom’s” have a cup of java before work. That is how I got the nick name, PolyMom as he expects me to know which high school athletes he should be looking at here in the islands. And he is impressed with my college football knowledge. In fact I had to encourage him to be a commentator a couple of years ago when the BCS National game was at the Rose Bowl. Let me drop one name…Brennan Carroll his son. He would be an excellent recruiter for us and get those Matre Dai boys from the OC. And the boys from Oaks Christian in the Valley. That is where Nick Montana went to school. Just a thought. What you think?

50-36 E. Wash. , like the Na Wahine game, the opponent is taking nearly 20 more FG attempts than UH. And they are launching a lot of 3s for E. W.

  330. tommui November 22, 2011 8:35 pm

Re #302 (RALPH) and #295 (el burro sabio) – I join in your comments.

The letter received by the UH was on Nov. 3 and it notified HPD and NCAA immediately.

I assume that UH started its own investigation at about the same time.

Rather than let it blow up later in the press and be accused of trying to hide, the UH released the story that the matter was turned over to HPD and NCAA.

  331. jm2375 November 22, 2011 8:36 pm

So, will ST be in line at midnight Thursday, just like last year? 🙄 😆

  332. Ralph November 22, 2011 8:38 pm

65-51 E. Washington, 5 minutes to play. E.W. still bombing away, 20 more FG attempts, and 25 to 9 in 3 attempts. And that is the difference, the margin in 3 point shooting.

Warriors basketball. Sad. No one can score. Out rebounded. Missing a lot of free throws. Eastern Washington running circles around the Warriors.

  335. tommui November 22, 2011 8:51 pm

Re #332 – forgot to add, UH released the story today – almost three weeks after they referred the letter to HPD?NCAA.

  336. Don Weir November 22, 2011 8:57 pm

    Old School Dave

Cal Murphy saw the handwriting on the wall and in 1973 left to join the SJSU coaching staff.

From there he went up to the Edmonton Eskimos and won two Grey Cups.

In Colorado last year teammates Dave Letz (LB), Dave Mutter (C) and myself called Coach Murphy while we were at the tailgate and had a great conversation trying to catch up. Good times!!

Charlie Aiu (rest in peace) was also part of the team and he went on to play for the Chargers with Hal Stringert. Of course my road team roommate went to the Cowboys and had a great career (Golden Richards) I had lunch with several UH FB supporters Monday and told them the story of Richards and a as of yet unamed other player that were way past bedcheck in Knoxville for the Tenn game. Murphy sent me to look for them and the rest is the story. I will tell you when I see you the rest of it.

Audick came along and played for the Chargers and then was traded to the 49ers as a back up guard prior to the playoffs. Tuesday before Superbowl the rt guard goes down and Audick starts. He and I reunited at Grossmont JC and coached together for several years.

  337. kev-1 November 22, 2011 9:02 pm

Did the media find out about it first? or did UH release a statement first? The way it appeared to me is that the story broke, then UH issued a statement.

    Hope it is pau.

  338. kev-1 November 22, 2011 9:03 pm

Too bad for the basketball bows. Where’s the outside shooting?

  339. PolyMom November 22, 2011 9:05 pm

Heck it is now in the hands of the NCAA. They will investigate the heck out of this. Until the NCAA does their thing everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Everyone should not ruffle their panties.

  340. kev-1 November 22, 2011 9:09 pm

Kinda think this team needs to get together before the game Saturday and just BE WITH EACH OTHER. Bond, let each other know that they got their backs, and just remind themselves that they are a team and to not let all of the outside stories tear that apart. Not saying that they have, but it is hard to ignore the talk.

Whatever you feel about coaches, the future, or whatever (because I have my opinions too), the one thing we all have in common is that we are Warrior fans. The fact that we visit this blog is proof of that.

Here’s to a victory on Saturday, wheter we make the spread or not. 🙂

  342. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2011 9:26 pm

    kev-1,

I think they already get together in some hotel the night before.

  343. cocobean November 22, 2011 9:33 pm

EW had a good game plan. They took Zane out of the game early. #22 was shadowing him and wouldn’t let Zane get too many open looks.

For one of the few times the team didn’t look ready to play. They couldn’t seem to match EW energy.

  344. SteveM November 22, 2011 9:34 pm

    RE: #342 & 343

    I’m in!

  345. WarriorNY November 22, 2011 9:37 pm

WTF? I miss the news for one day and there’s a point shaving story? It should be noted that Hawaii was the best in the NCAA last year against the spread. I think they were 11-3 against the spread…

The movement on the UNLV moneyline is pretty sickening… You never get that kind of movement…

  346. kev-1 November 22, 2011 9:42 pm

344 . . . I sleep in the same bed with my wife every night. That doesn’t mean we bond.

    TMI???

  347. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2011 9:44 pm

Glad to see this idiotic story is being put to rest (hopefully). For me, there were 3 red flags:

    1) anonymous sender

    2) no one specifically named

    3) letter sent to Office of Admissions

Office of Admissions? Really? WTH? Idiot doesn’t know the org structure of UH?

Don’t be so smug. Obviously Admissions has nothing to do with it, which means they have to give it to someone else to look into. That office knows that a whole bunch of people in Admissions know about the letter, and it makes it harder to ignore or cover up.

  350. kev-1 November 22, 2011 9:53 pm

349 . . . dude, go back and read my post and clear up any misconceptions you may have. Try not to be so literal. I wasn’t saying that they aren’t or that they are letting the nonsense get to them. I’m just trying to make the point that there is a lot of distraction and during times like these it doesn’t hurt to reinforce support for one another.

  351. lava November 22, 2011 9:56 pm

Won’t be long before football season ends and Ferd gives the signal we can start talking basketball. I guess the topic will be whether Gib should be fired.

  352. Curt November 22, 2011 9:57 pm

What an interesting day. The “big news,” the Wahine barely squeaking past Fresno St, and da Bows getting shot out of the Stanley. Getting too old for all this excitement.

  353. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2011 9:57 pm

And I am saying, I am sure they doing it before every game. This time it shouldn’t be any different because of some nut who sent in a random letter that accused no one and everyone at the same time. Nuff said.

    Whew. What a day, eh?

Anonymous sources are acknowledging that at least several dozen UH Warrior football players will be involved in a football game on Saturday evening, and that they intend to play their butts off and represent Hawaii with a big win at Aloha Stadium.

An undisclosed fan, speaking on the condition of anonimity, also had this to say about about the situation:

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    WIPE OUT DA WAVES!!!

    Pomai

    UH41 Da Ripples21

    Thanks.

    Good night all…

    Stretch,

It’s USD not SDSU regarding point shaving scandal. University of San Diego (or University of Spoiled Daughters, also known as Aya’s alma mater) with the non-Tsaiko friendly named, Jenny Craig Pavilion as their home facility.

  368. kev-1 November 22, 2011 11:20 pm

368 . . . that’s all speculation. Until said players are identified, we have to hold judgement. If this allegation is true, this will be wonderful for the team and fans. Let’s hope there is merit to this rumor.

  369. WarriorMojo November 22, 2011 11:31 pm

I have to admit that I am terrified about what Mack will have to say about this situation.

  370. kev-1 November 22, 2011 11:41 pm

Will the following please show up at the stadium on Saturday?

Graves Diggers and Double Crossers (fans of our new QB)

Brown Nosers (fans that agree Aaron Brown has a nose for the football)

The Torres Chorus (fans that sing the praises of Richard Torres)

Iosefa Heffas (big chicks that go crazy everytime Joey touches the ball)

Royces Voices (fans that cheer for Pollard)

Billy’s Fillies (pretty boy stutzman’s female following)

Miah’s Flyahs (all those short people that idolize the athleticism and hops this little guy has)

Corey’s Soreknees (for all of the limpers that can relate to Paredes’ pain)

Rolo’s Lolos (people that go crazy when Rolo makes a killer play call)

Tomey’s Homies (all those old schoolers)

Cal’s Pals (come on, he knows choke locals)

The Mack Pack (the coaches supporters . . . yeah you guys can come too)

    And many more . . .

    IMUA Warriors!!

  373. Not an Expert November 23, 2011 12:16 am

As I stated before the conference payout per team is where the money is and where teams want membership in. The bowl games are the icing on the cake and helps these schools and conferences to be able to continue to compete at the highest level. This in turn makes it harder for smaller schools with less TV market to be able to get into the dance.

However, people will always want to watch a winner and if UH became a powerhouse who in the nation will not want to watch them. Thus if UH can stir interest from all over the nation it is possible for them to be a player and get backing from the networks.

People will watch a program or identify with something if they become interested and attached to it. Example Korean soaps that are being watched in Philippines, Japan, Hawaii and wherever.

First big money and sponsors needed. Facilities upgraded and are 2nd to none, a jet with all business class type seating and legroom partnered with Hawaiian. As they say build it, nurture it and the best athletes will come. Especially after a precedence is set whereby year after year UH athletes in football, basketball and baseball makes it to the pros. A coaches dream when top notch athletes seeks you out to come and play.

A passing thought at the wee hours of the night. Good night and may we all dream of UH being bigtime.

  374. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 23, 2011 12:40 am

Turned over the information to Stephen about the Ching Complex upgrades – $10 million is about to be spent.

Hope Coach Gib puts everyone on the free-throw line for at least three hours and in the three-point zone for another three hours before letting anyone gorge themselves this Thursday.

Congrats to Na Wahine – when we left the Anyplace Lounge to head on over to the basketball game, I assumed that it was going to be an UNODOSADIOS Aloha Payback for leaving the WAC.

Unfortunately, ESPN 1500 cannot be heard in The Stan so I checked my iPhone about twenty minutes later and was stunned. I let everyone sitting around us know and all kinds of Smart Phones got whipped out to check on what was happening.

    Point-shaving? Let’s see verifiable proof.

  375. Nike Football Cleats November 23, 2011 4:15 am

Looks-wise the Nike soccer cleats haven’t changed dramatically from the first CTR boot, they retain the two tone New nike soccer shoes colour scheme with asymmetrical lacing and dampening pod technology. The upper of the Nike mercurial soccer cleats Maestri II football boots is still constructed using Nike Mercurial Superfly unique Kanga-Lite material, a synthetic leather which provides optimal comfort, fit and performance in all Mercurial Vapor Superfly weather conditions.

  376. Nike Football Cleats November 23, 2011 4:17 am

The design brief for the nike CTR360 Maestri II football boots, Mercurial Vapors was to create the ultimate ball control boot. To achieve this Nike Football Cleats have retained the dampening pods which were such a stand-out feature of the first generation of Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly boots, just with some minor modifications, yet the theory of cushioning the ball and applying more Mercurial Vapor Superfly 3 boot surface area to the ball still applies.
