Travel day

The Warriors are scheduled to leave this afternoon. A few things:

• Mike Tinoco was added to the travel roster in place of wideout Royce Pollard, who has a stress fracture in his left leg.

• Jovonte Taylor, who did not play in the second half against Fresno State because of a sprained left ankle, said he is physically fit to start against Idaho. He will open at right wideout and also will serve as the No. 1 kick returner.

• Chizzy Diumde has been getting extended practice time as a running back and kick returner.

• Running back Inoke Funaki took snaps today as the third-string quarterback.

• Defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga won’t make the trip.

• Defensive end Elliott Purcell aggravated a stinger today. He said he will be ready for Saturday’s game.

    Good Luck Warriors.

  3. kama krab October 14, 2009 10:53 am

Just in case decided to repost on this side.

    Howzit Everybody,

My take on this is that everyone has there opinions whether it is with the norm or against. We all are not here to make friends or agree with each other but what we are here for is to celebrate our Warriors. Whether it is constructive criticism or just some crazy opinion, everyone has a voice. For the most part I love to reading both sides of the story whether I like it or not. If I totally don’t agree with a veiw point then I will question it a give my reasoning. This is just part of the process. I don’t think anybody should totally agree with another person’s opinion because it is just that, “An Opinion”.

What I will say is I don’t like when people come on the blog calling people idiots and koolaid drinkers. I mean so what if some of us like koolaid should it bother anybody. This is what we chose to drink. If we chose to say the praises then that is what we chose to do. And on a side note, I always like koolaid and that is probably why my dentist always scold me now about my cavities.

But to close this off, I am always open to opinion and I love to read other peoples view points. What I don’t like is when people start getting nasty and that kind of people have no place in open forum like to Warrior Beat.

  8. kama krab October 14, 2009 10:57 am

Just gotta say that a lose to Idaho might be the end of any Hawaii Bowl hopes. A win and hope stays strong for another week.

We’ll be on your tail soon as we head out to the PNW tomorrow. 🙂

  12. d1島 October 14, 2009 11:04 am

Sorry to hear about Royce Pollard. Was that reported earlier?
    Good luck to Mike Tinoco.

    QB3. Hmmmm….

its not easy to get to Moscow (no not you, our ruskkie spammers). how are the guys getting there?

  14. kama krab October 14, 2009 11:08 am

Get well soon Royce. Take as much rest as you need.

Numba 3. Would have like to see Cayman get some reps at three and work Inoke more into the offense with the Wildcat. I would also like to see Hawaii use more formation out of the Wildcat to so more of what Inoke can do.

    *For Entertainment Purposes Only*

If things indeed did open at 11.5, it seems that there is no money to back it up in ID.

Found one line that has it down to 5.5!

  17. Bulla October 14, 2009 11:09 am

    d1,
have a good trip….brrrrrr….18 to 85, i wish that was the freeway instead of the temperature swing last sunday…ouch

  18. d1島 October 14, 2009 11:12 am

    Bulla,

Latest check shows lows in the 40’s with a little rain near the coast. Hope it stays that way!

  19. J-Dog October 14, 2009 11:12 am

With Taylor not at 100%, Tinoco will probably see a significant amount of playing time.

  20. J-Dog October 14, 2009 11:13 am

    Malcolm? Oh Malcolm?

    Mr. Lane? Mr. Laaaane?

  21. kama krab October 14, 2009 11:14 am

It would be a nice change up to see the Wildcat used every so often just to get a different look with the running game. Just a thought.

  22. kama krab October 14, 2009 11:18 am

I guess we are now seeing the depth at the WR becoming a factor. Hopefully there is very little drop off or else we might be in even more trouble. We will see.

  24. Slugger October 14, 2009 11:19 am

When I go to practice, I learn a lot of what to look for listening to Coach Tormey. I’m still learning about football & I still can’t throw a ball. At least the one I tossed back to the players didn’t tumble end over end. Coach Shaw said it’s going to be 12 hours of traveling; long day. Loved watching Leon W-J run! Go, Leon, go!

  25. d1島 October 14, 2009 11:19 am

    kama krab,

It would be a really nice change up to see the regular Offense light it up for 6 TD’s on Saturday!

  26. kama krab October 14, 2009 11:23 am

    D1,

    That would be really nice.

  27. Kazz (Win #1000 comes on SAT 10/17/2009!!!) October 14, 2009 11:24 am

    Kama,

The performance in the Idaho game will be telling of where we are going this season. Regardless, I think this team may have a “shocker” of a win in them before it is all said and done.

Nevada, Boise State, Navy, and Wisconsin have been put on notice! 😎

  28. llwfan October 14, 2009 11:25 am

#3 agreed but isn’t it a 2-way street.Wouldn’t calling somebody a hater, troll, naysayer, or any other name also a personal attack. If you want respect, respect others ppl’s point of view with out name calling. Example #285 on yesterday’s blog calls gorn a nerd. This is a personal attack. Another example on yesterdays blog is someone uses the phrase honest opinion and gets attacked by old diver. I have seen IMHO used by Tsaiko’s (which correct me if I am wrong means in my honest opinion), many times, yet as soon as a non-regular uses it, it comes into question, even by ST. 2 much byast on this blog. These are only opinions. I think everyone needs to grow up and be respectful of each other. Just giving my opinion and I expect to be attacked for it.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid October 14, 2009 11:26 am

  32. Da Punchbowl Kid October 14, 2009 11:40 am

Hopefully not Manke. Diversity is good. I think we can count on one or two fingers who the real trolls on here are, and SVOTG wasn’t one of them.

Come back Gorn. And use ur real nic, it was a cool one.

  33. llwfan October 14, 2009 11:41 am

Just one more thought questioning someone’s credential’s as Willie did with Gorn to see whether or not he has a right to post his opinion. And ST jumping on that band wagon isn’t fair. If ST wants it a certain way then he should proclaim it. I am a neutral observer and these are tough questions that I am giving. So everyone should also look in the mirror.

  34. Bulla October 14, 2009 11:43 am

  37. tards? October 14, 2009 11:46 am

Funny thing, there is a very popular and Tsaiko (who has already posted on this blog today) who, just the other day, referred to those who dared to voice criticism as ‘tards, yet I failed to read any condemnation of that kind of behavior.

    We need a win…..

  41. Mrs. A-House October 14, 2009 11:58 am

Would anyone know if the recruits mentioned by Coach Mack last night be those already given a verbal or “in addition to”? If, “in addition to”, then looks like a group of Olinemen coming on board.

Also, sounded like a “group” of local athletes are very near to making a public commitment to UH soon or did I read Kazz’z report wrong, again!!!

  42. Old Diver October 14, 2009 11:59 am

Oh wow, I didn’t realize my ” honest opinion” post was an attack. If you read it carefully it was kind of tongue in cheek. BTW, IMHO means ” in my humble opinion, cause let’s face it, there are no honest opinions only opinions, just MHO.

Good luck warriors have a good game play with pride .Vaughn get well and for Ikaika Mahoe work hard I pray that mr mac gives you that chance to play . I don’t understand why you not in playing because you are one of the better defense tackles on the warriors football roster .

  50. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 12:13 pm

I would love to see the Wildcat and any other type of plays just as soon as the team has mastered the RnS plays. Sorry, but I just think that with all the injuries and new guys getting plugged in here and there, the team already has it’s plate full just trying to master the techniques and plays at hand.

  51. Kaimuki Kid October 14, 2009 12:15 pm

When everything is tallied out at the end of the day, “It is just a game, a football game, not life or death, just a game!” All opinions are welcomed, everyone is got to stop being so sensitive. That being said, Is it Saturday yet? Go Warriors!

  52. Garret October 14, 2009 12:15 pm

I hope that Elliott Purcell will be fully recovered before the game! The D cannot afford to lose more defensive linemen.

  53. Garret October 14, 2009 12:16 pm

Chizzy Diumde earned a shot at some playing time…he’s really been buried on the depth chart this season and I liked what I saw in the end of the Fresno State game.

  54. Garret October 14, 2009 12:17 pm

It sounds like today was the first time that Inoke took snaps at QB. With travel roster limitations, none of the freshmen QBs will make the trip so Shutter cannot be an emergency QB.

  55. d1島 October 14, 2009 12:20 pm

    Garret,

Roster limits was probably a big factor since he is also the Holder for PK’s

  56. d1島 October 14, 2009 12:22 pm

    Willie Grace….

    play nice erryboddy!

  57. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 12:22 pm

To the team… I hope they remember that it’s a game and have fun. Hard to win when you’re not having fun. Play hard.. have fun.. kick some Idaho butt!

  58. Garret October 14, 2009 12:22 pm

I agree that there are times where some people are so concerned about beating back trolls and keeping things positive that something they might attack a poster who made a negative comment instead of addressing the negative comment itself. Someone like Pride (I would love to know what he’s biting his tongue about!) could say the same thing and they would look at the substance of his post instead of attacking the person who posted it.

There are other times that someone is a true troll and wants to cause a fuss on the blog. Their motives become clear pretty quickly. I don’t think that Gorn is a troll–he has his point of view and expressed it clearly without making personal attacks on posters.

  59. Konaboy3 October 14, 2009 12:23 pm

Good luck Ikaika Mahoe may god bless you and warriors .

  60. Garret October 14, 2009 12:24 pm

    d1shima,

Yes, they cannot leave Inoke behind. He also provides depth at QB and RB, which is important with travel limitations. If this was a nonconference game like the Washington State/UNLV trip, the larger travel roster might have allowed UH to carry 3 QBs and Inoke…but the travel roster size is smaller for conference gmaes if I’m remembering correctly.

  61. llwfan October 14, 2009 12:27 pm

Someone’s honest opinion is what that person perceives to be true according that person, not sugar coated. Because why lie. If someone tells the truth in their mind it makes them honest so there opinion is coming from the heart which makes it honest. BTW no one should be called a troll no matter what!!! It is a hurtful remark to to those that are true fans but have a different opinion.

  62. Kaimuki Kid October 14, 2009 12:28 pm

    Garret,
a number of years ago a pro team’s QB that had something wrong with his voice and because he needed to do audibles, some one rigged a amplified speaker system with a mic that fit on his uniform and made his voice loud enough to be heard over the crowd noise. I can’t recall if it worked or was even legal . Opinion? Just wondering because of playing in places like the Kibbie Dome, Metrodome etc.

  63. A-House October 14, 2009 12:30 pm

no, no, no d1 – he owns the entire property!!!

  64. Manoa Mist October 14, 2009 12:33 pm

In my honest, forthright, humble and truthful opinion, I enjoy reading everybody else’s opinions. Some folks are brutal, though. But the UH coaches and players perform in the public arena, they’re adults and they can take it.
I agree with our host – I don’t enjoy seeing posters attacking each other. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, no matter how ill informed or incorrect one may see that opinion as being.
Whether you drink Hateraide or koolaid, it’s a free country. Time will prove the worth of one’s opinion. Bottom line is we all care about UH sports.
And it’s the funny stuff, and there’s a lot of funny stuff on here especially from ss tsai, that keeps me coming back.
    Peace out.

  65. Kaimuki Kid October 14, 2009 12:39 pm

I was backtracking on the blog and saw that the name Kress came up. Kress stores came into the islands and took over the spaces occupied at the time by Ben Franklin. My mom was a long time BenFranklin and Kress employee until Kress stores closed up shop. Getting back to the point. The downtown branch of Ben Franklin had a coffee shop that made a BLT sandwich that I craving for right now and a really ONO Strawberry Shortcake. I don’t think I can eat my Ham sandwich now…:(

  66. Kaimuki Kid October 14, 2009 12:43 pm

BLT and Fries top off with Strawberry Shortcake yum! Oh Boy! and a chocolate shake….

  67. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 12:54 pm

    Me?

I just don’t like to hear people calling other people names … calling others idiots or other names… saying someone cannot coach because of one or two poor decisions in a game with 100’s of decisions is rather absurd. Worse, criticizing play calling but not specifying which play(s)…especially when the team had been moving the ball with ease until they got into the red zone. That just tells me parts of the game are really good while other parts need more work.

Defensively they made a number of good plays, BUT, they made poor ones that cost them dearly, as well. How would you have coached those differently? Was it poor coaching? Poor on the field decision-making? Wrong technique? Mismatch? Wrong play? Generalizations are meaningless. Let’s get to specifics.

Statements like “Mac can’t coach for beans!” are obviously untrue. Especially when he’s been around a long time and done very well for himself for 30+ years, at all levels.

There are some time management issues, it’s true. We need players as well as assistant coaches to help keep an eye on that as we used to have in the past.

I enjoy constructive criticism that points out specific deficiencies. I particularly like those that not only point out the specific but suggest remedies. These give me something to study, to learn from and grow as a fan of the team and game.

  68. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 12:57 pm

Okay.. now I need to go replace my brakes…

Lost all braking power on H3 as I was leaving the tunnel heading towards Aiea this past weekend. Got hit with heavy rains on the Leeward side and suddenly, at 60MPH, my brakes were gone! Kept pumping hoping not to crash into the car infront when the brakes locked on ONE side only… swerved suddenly to the right across two lanes then back one before gaining control again… Fortunately no other car was behind me. My wife was with me and she was pale as a ghost after that experience. Phew..

    What can I say?
Make sure you get your brakes checked from time to time..

  69. Jn October 14, 2009 1:06 pm

What was the reason for abandoning the run after the first quarter in the last game? This was a bad decision. LWJ was moving the ball. There was still plenty of time left in the game. It would of took some pressure off Moniz. I said from before Hawaii needs to mix it up. I’m not saying I’m right but it’s just my opinion.

Will continue to go back and try my luck – boy, does that sound old and costly!!!!

    good afternoon all

just had a “hawaiian mixed plate” from times supermarket. usually i am not too keen on buying ready to eat food from supermarkets but i was there and too lazy to go elsewhere.

i gotta admit it a very large portion of pulled pork, laulau, lomi salmon, chicken and long rice, a purple potato, coconut custard….i am staring down the leftovers and i am trying to finish it but i cant.

anyway point is i recommend it if anyone is hungry right now.

  76. Darren October 14, 2009 1:28 pm

Jn – Coach Mack said on the show last night, in hindsight, that they should have NOT abandoned the run when it was obviously producing yards in the first quarter. That’s what I heard.

Chalk another lesson up for the coaches and team in future similar situations. Contradicts what was said the day before at the press conference, but at least it shows willingness/ability to learn and improve.

  77. Pomai October 14, 2009 1:29 pm

jn #69 I told Kekoa the same thing, LWJ was running jpretty good I thought they should have continued with it till they stopped it.

  78. kama krab October 14, 2009 1:29 pm

    Jn,

I agree with your assessment. I thought Hawaii could have keep running the ball even when we were down 21-3. I thought that before we abandoned the run LWJ was doing a pretty good job of getting yards in chunks. They did come back to it later but by then it was to late. I thought that during the first half when we did run the ball our o-line was blocking pretty good and we had a chance to stick with the run but it was not meant to be. Hopefully we can give the running game another chance during the Idaho game cause I feel it might make a difference especially after watching LWJ run with a little conviction during the Fresno game. We will see

  79. Kekoa October 14, 2009 1:29 pm

Wow…that musta been a scary ride! Glad you and da Mrs. are ok.

Sounds like you need a “Fred Flintstone” car. Hope you have Luau feet tho!

  80. Pomai October 14, 2009 1:32 pm

Actually I think that LWJ running in the first quarter was the best he’s done since coming here. He seemed to be running with more determination

  81. Kaimuki Kid October 14, 2009 1:34 pm

There used to be a sandwich/coffee shop in Kaimuki called Elsie’s and they made really ono Teri-Beef sandwich. That place got bought or taken over by Okata Bento. It is now run by someone who is making the same kind of Teri-Beef sandwich that Elsie’s used to make. I willl find out the name and let everyone know

  82. Jn October 14, 2009 1:35 pm

    Darren,
Thanks for the info I did’nt catch that show. But that’s good news Coach Mack said that and good news for the next game. Bring it Warriors on Saturday!

  83. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 14, 2009 1:36 pm

MIH- wow! keeping that guardian angel busy!!! That reminds me of the time I came down from Kokee in our VW bus. The brakes went out on the flat, gentle slope after the curves and I had enough space to downshift to a stop before reaching the highway!
Then there was the time in the old bondo Valiant -we came through the tunnel of trees, negotiated the curves and when we hit the flat towards Koloa, the hood flew up, completely obscuring the windshield!!!
    We obviously survived… 😆

  86. kama krab October 14, 2009 1:39 pm

    Pomai #80,

I think so to. He was hitting holes harder than I have ever seen him hit holes. Even when the holes where not as big, he still hit them hard for some 4-5 yard. I hope he continues doing this because if he can and the coaches can call his number at least 15 times a game, we might have something here. It’s not a Nasty Nate but it might be time for action Jackson. Once again we wil see.

  87. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 14, 2009 1:42 pm

I wonder if we may see a TE added to the scheme if we are going to keep mixing it up with the running game…???

  88. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 14, 2009 1:49 pm

    Garret,

Dont know if you have this info off hand but I was just wondering how much the assistants make at UH.

I have been searching but I think it would require a formal inquiry to the UHAD.

  89. A-House October 14, 2009 1:50 pm

Wonder what the defense would do if Tua, playing WR, goes into motion and becomes the TE and do the “Noke” – to run or pass? at 6’4″ he has the height to be a TE.

  90. Committed Road Warrior October 14, 2009 1:50 pm

    LizKauai:

IMO, adding a TE to the scheme sounds feasible if we’re going to mix it up with a running game and give the RBs more carries overall, but doing so likely wouldn’t be in our best interests if it serves as a direct promulgation to the opponent that we’re going to run the ball.

It sort of reminds me of the latter part of last year when GA would go under center…..it was almost an open declaration to the opponent of “We are going to execute a quarterback keeper.”

  91. kama krab October 14, 2009 1:53 pm

ST or anybody else who might know,

I am just wondering why Mac moved Huen back to middle linebacker. Is it because the guys on the depth chart are ready to perform or is there another reason. Just wondering especially with all the injuries to the D-End positions.

  92. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 14, 2009 1:57 pm

    CRW- good points.
At this point, it makes sense to develop a scheme around the talent we have – which, arguably, is getting thin is some areas as injuries take their toll.

Does anyone know if Mouse Davis was here on anything but vacation???

  93. Garret October 14, 2009 2:02 pm

    Kaimuki Kid,

I don’t think that kind of speaker system would be allowed in college. There would be questions about competitive advantage for teams that could afford the setup…plus, it would dilute the benefit of home-field advantage that college teams enjoy.

  94. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 2:10 pm

    kama krab,

I think it’s because Mac’s still not comfortable with the play of the guys who are in the middle and outside. He’s still looking for that combination that can torpedo from the outside and contain the run and short pass up/in the middle. Possibly even get a turn over or two. ALSO, I really think McMackin studies the other’s offense and tries to match up the best personnel for what they expect to come when and where.

Our defense is weak but far from pathetic. They simply need more time.

  95. Jn October 14, 2009 2:11 pm

    Pomai, Kama Krab,
I agree with you guys too, sorry I missed your posts. This Sat. gonna be a good one.

  96. Garret October 14, 2009 2:12 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

I did a quick google search and found that the salary ranges were increased after JJ left. Here are the range of salaries:

Associate Coach went from $66k- $126k to $117k to $204k
    Off/Def Coordinator went from $65k – $118k to $117k to $204k
Assistant Coach went from $50k to $90k to $56k to $165k

I know that I stored the actual salaries that the coaches were making during the Sugar Bowl season somewhere, but I can’t find it right now. However, UH significantly increased the assistant coach salaries now…though they are WELL below big-budget programs.

I cannot believe that UH got some high-profile coordinators (Glanville, Mac) with that $118k max salary. Coach Cav must have earned something like $70k when he left UH…no wonder he had to move on with that type of salary range. It is expensive to live in Hawaii and the assistant coach salaries really had to improve to attract top talent. Or, whenever a UH coach has some great success a BCS school will offer 4x or 5x his salary to leave. If the difference was 2x or less, maybe UH would be able to keep assistants they wish to keep.

  97. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 2:13 pm

Kress downtown, boy that whole area changed. I was thinking it was where Woolworth’s and it’s fried chicken plate used to be, but now that I think about it, it was further mauka where Leeds had a shoe store and there was a magazine shop across the way. The old Blaisedell hotel with it man operated elevator was where my mother had an office of home made remedies for just about anything and everything.

  98. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 2:16 pm

    Garret,

McMackin really hardballed UH for salaries and a better recruiting budget. He played his cards right and in the long run, I think our program will benefit significantly from it.

  99. kokua October 14, 2009 2:16 pm

    Idaho 31
    Hawaii 14

  100. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 14, 2009 2:17 pm

    Garret,

I think if, and only if the higher side of the salary range was the norm then it would be in line with mid-level bcs schools. i think only a handful of o/d-coordinators make more than $300,000 a year (even at nfl level).

My guess though is that the pay must be on the lower side of that scale.

  101. kama krab October 14, 2009 2:18 pm

    madeinhawaii,

The only reason I ask is because I thought Huen was doing a pretty decent job at the D-End position and with some injuries to that position I figure why make a change when it will hurt the depth at the position. Thus the reason I ask about the depth chart and whether others are ready to step up. I understand your reasoning and it does make since but at what cost will it effect our depth up front. Thanks for your explanation.

  102. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 14, 2009 2:19 pm

I thought it was JJ who either pushed for them or forced them to go higher when they were negotiating the failed contract at the end? I might be wrong though.

  103. Garret October 14, 2009 2:19 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

It takes *so long* for the Board of Regents to increase the salary ranges, so I think they just gave a HUGE range and figured that would last them for awhile.

  104. Garret October 14, 2009 2:20 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

JJ *was* pushing for the assistant coach salaries to be increased for years, pointing out that UH lost coaches like Mac and Cav because of the low salaries and high cost of living in Hawaii. However, nothing got done until after JJ left.

  105. dittohead October 14, 2009 2:20 pm

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 14, 2009 2:23 pm

    Garret,

I know nothing got done until JJ left, but the promises for an increase to salaries were promised to him when they were negotiating in 2008 right? Those salary promises were just honored going into Macks contract talks etc.

  108. Garret October 14, 2009 2:26 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

You are correct that UH promised JJ that they would increase the assistant coach salaries when they realized that he could actually leave UH. Mac did a very good thing by using his leverage in the hiring process to make sure to insist that UH increase the assistant coach ranges like they promised JJ.

  109. WarriorTogo October 14, 2009 2:27 pm

Boise State just converted a 2 point play after TD against Tulsa.

I have been spending some time at a roofing seminar with three Univ of Idaho employees. They are very proud of their team and very confident. You wouldn’t believe the things they to say about Boise. I don’t think their mothers taught them that kind of language.

  111. Garret October 14, 2009 2:30 pm

Duane Akina makes $309k to be the DB coach at Texas, so those who have been hoping that he’d come to UH to be an assistant coach are expecting him to take a pretty big pay cut. I saw that posted a couple of times on other sites, but his name has come up here periodically.

  112. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 2:30 pm

    dittohead,

    Garret,

  113. labrat October 14, 2009 2:31 pm

Tulsa beating Boise St. 14 – 8 in the first quarter.

  114. Garret October 14, 2009 2:32 pm

Are UH assistant coaches making money from the camps that UH puts on? The Texas assistants make quite a bit from the camps, and their salaries are paid for by the fees that are paid by the people who attend the camp so the money doesn’t come from the University.

The two coordinators also receive a $15,000 endowment. The camp money for Muschamp, Davis and McWhorter is $20,000. The rest of the assistants will earn $10,000.

Davis and Muschamp will receive $30,000 for speaking fees. McWhorter will earn $15,000, while the rest of the staff will get $5,000.

  115. Garret October 14, 2009 2:34 pm

    madeinhawaii,

Without an Athletic Director, I’m guessing that UH would have moved *very* slowly to hire a new head coach…or they would have promoted one of the people on staff (Cal Lee?) and given him a short-term contract (3 years or so) to prove himself.

Mac did pick up some *excellent* recruits in the time that he had available. I remember how happy I was when Mac’s home visit resulted in Paipai selecting UH. Paipai is exactly the type of recruit that a team can rebuild with.

  116. Garret October 14, 2009 2:36 pm

Wow, if BSU struggles with Tulsa on national TV they will definitely drop in the polls again even if they win. If BSU loses, the WAC has no chance for BCS money.

    15-14 Broncos

  118. kama krab October 14, 2009 3:01 pm

    Garret #116,

I think that even if Boise won this game and the rest of there games on the schedule they still might not make a BCS bowl. I say this because if TCU goes undefeated then TCU will make the BCS bowl. But even if TCU does not go undefeated I think SOS will not help Boise and a one loss team might jump them. The pollsters will try there best to keep Boise out. In there minds they have already given Boise a chance they will not do it again.

  119. chawan_cut October 14, 2009 3:03 pm

    booooo karl benson.
where’s your boise shirt? i know its your undershirt.

  120. Garret October 14, 2009 3:13 pm

    kama krab,

If TCU loses or doesn’t pass BSU in the polls and BSU runs the table, BSU will be in a BCS game. They are rated too highly to miss out on the BCS spot if the other non-BCS conferences do not have a candidate. One loss teams from BCS conferences might pass BSU, but TCU is the only team that could jump over BSU…and TCU will not be able to do it with one loss. This is where the revised BCS rules helps the WAC.

The worst-case scenario for me is for TCU to get the sole BCS spot over BSU this year, just like Utah did it over BSU last year. The WAC can use the money and I don’t like the money to go to the MWC instead.

  121. djmitcho October 14, 2009 3:19 pm

I wonder where the team is flying into. Should I go to the airport at midnight to see if the team is arriving then?

  122. kama krab October 14, 2009 3:20 pm

Boise whether they go undefeated every season will only be known as a very good mid-major. This is just the way it goes. The majority will always say that Boise would not be able to play with the big boys year in and year out. I myself agree with them. Boise will be to dominate the WAC year in and year out but besides that they are a very average team in the grand scheme of things.

  123. kokua October 14, 2009 3:20 pm

The thinking among major pundits is Boise State’s schedule is not tough enough to merit a NC bowl game, preferring a one loss team(s) instead. We can see that with VT leapfrogging the Donks in the national rankings and USC if they beat ND.
That means a once beaten Texas or SEC team, VT, USC or even Ohio State all are in the mix ahead of BSU.
If BSU run the table they will certainly be in a BCS bowl (Fiesta or Sugar).
If TCU runs the table they too may have an outside chance but BSU will take precedence over TCU if it comes down to one midmajor in a BCS Bowl.
The BCS standing are due after the end of games this weekend and we should see a couple of one loss teams passing BSU merely because of SOS.

  124. J-Dog October 14, 2009 3:21 pm

    Some things that I miss:

-Having an NFL coach with a pro-style approach with players
-The most unique uniforms in the NCAA, not that cookiecutter UA crap
-The loud speakers blaring the eo na toa before big plays and the conch
-A team that played with swagger
-Cheering when we made TOUCHDOWNS not 1ST DOWNS
-Doing the Ha’a/Haka because we could actually back it up on the field

Timing is everything. We just missed out on being a consistent top 25 team. I bet with JJ’s O, Mack/Reinbold/Lee’s/Tuioti allowed to recruit freely, Mack only having to concentrate on the D, Ching improvements to the facilities, and coming off the sugar bowl appearance, we missed a chance to capitalize big time.

I realize coulda/woulda/shoulda blah blah. Just dreaming out loud.

  125. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 3:24 pm

    Garret,

I wonder though, if Mac had not accepted, if the Ching Athletic Complex would even be in the works? The new turf? The assistant coach’s pay and recruiting budget, would they be any where close to what they are today?

If JJ can prove what he, facilities, and money can do at SMU, then I can also see him coming back after Mac’s term is over, that is, if the State coughs up the $$ and the stadium repairs are in place as well as an improved revenue stream to the athletic department.

  126. Garret October 14, 2009 3:26 pm

If BSU run the table they will certainly be in a BCS bowl (Fiesta or Sugar).

    kokua,

If a Big 10 or Pac 10 team is in the national championship game, then the non-BCS team will play in the *Rose Bowl* after this season. It sure looks like it will be an SEC team vs. Texas in the national championship game, but Texas could easily lose a game (Oklahoma at a neutral field, at Oklahoma State, etc.).

    Garret #121,

I totally agree. I hope TCU gets stuffed in there tracks because it would kill me to see another MWC team in the BCS. It would just bolster there dream of becoming a BCS conference, which I still think will not happen any time soon if ever.

  131. dittohead October 14, 2009 3:32 pm

    Majority?

  132. Garret October 14, 2009 3:33 pm

    madeinhawaii,

The Ching foundation got the idea from JJ leaving UH and the news about the great need for facility upgrades…I don’t think that Mac being the coach to take over had any effect. Many of the other problems were also due to the legislature taking publicly covered tours of the facility problems at UH and the great attention paid to the problems because JJ left.

I could see JJ returning to UH after he is done at SMU, even as just the offensive coordinator. However, I have grave doubts as to whether or not the facility improvements will actually take place because the state doesn’t really have money. If the state has to shut down the public schools for 17 Fridays a year and still needs to find other ways to cut also, I doubt they are going to put money into UH facility upgrades now…UH will be lucky to get the money needed for just the basic maintenance and repair stuff that is needed. I am a huge UH fan but I’d prefer the kids of Hawaii actually getting a chance to compete with the educations provided by other states…losing those 17 days will really hurt their futures and the future of the state.

The elephant in the room is that Aloha Stadium will need to be replaced eventually…who is going to come up with that type of money? Without the money from a modern football stadium, UH Athletics will fall behind even the average non-BCS athletic departments.

sorry about that, it got real hectic real quick. we left sunday morning at 130 am for our drive to seattle. the game was great, The Beast had a blast! and after the game we took him to dinner by the Ramada at the airport, ‘Longhorns’?? they had a great steak, some time to unwind after the game. we got back to the hotel, distributed the 8 bags of goodies for ‘the hawaiians’ including arare, cuttlefish, li hi mui, and other assorted treats.

it was like feeding time at the zoo with all of them honking for food, haha. we didn’t arrive up there until pre dinner on friday. Lyn wanted to eat at the Crab Pot by Pikes, so we went there for lunch on friday, then the 4+ hour drive to your woods.

i wonder how the brothers lee feel about the fact that they are the defensive and offensive coordinators of this here university and yet,

it is the head coach who runs the defense during the games (and in itself)
    and
it is the young qb coach who calls the shots in the game and has the big ears of the head coach.

not only would my ego be bruised let alone my integrity, even though i know that the head coach is scrambling about trying to fix this mess to save some face. right about now i’d be rather discouraged if i were a brother lee.

but, hey, isn’t it that after ten years a state worker is fully vested in the retirement system?

    jus’ wonderin aloud

  147. Garret October 14, 2009 4:01 pm

BSU is #5 or #6 right now and only needs to be in the top 12 of the BCS standings (and be higher than any non-BCS conference team) to get a BCS spot. If they go undefeated, it really isn’t possible for them to drop out of the top 12. So, kama krab really doesn’t have to worry about the pollsters dropping BSU if TCU loses.

    Garret #133,

That’s what kills me about living in paradise, our lawmakers. They never seem to plan for the future. What they try to do is make sure that what happens today is sufficient enough. Aloha Stadium has been ready to demolish for years and still they have not planned to do anything with it. Also the our public school system has gone down the dump and has been going down that road for years but still nothing has happen. All they do is cut to make money for something else. But I am just rambling. I think alot of my rambling does not make sense anyway. SORRY

  150. Garret October 14, 2009 4:04 pm

    WarriorMojo,

I’m so glad that you reminded me of when the contract goes into effect! The new BCS agreement starts *next* season, so I am wrong about a non-BCS conference team possibly playing in the Rose Bowl this season. That possibility starts with the 2010 season. I was wrong about BSU possibly playing in the Rose Bowl this season (sorry kokua!)…which is good because that gives UH some time to pass them and get that Rose Bowl spot.

Starting with the 2010 season and running through the 2013 season, the first time the Rose Bowl loses one of its conference champions and a team from one of the non-automatic qualifying leagues earns a BCS bid, the Rose Bowl must take that team.

  151. Garret October 14, 2009 4:07 pm

    kama krab,

No need to apologize for #150, I do not disagree with what you are saying. The big problem to me was that nothing was done when the state had a surplus and the economy was good…no planning ahead to get things done that could have generated future money (like investing in stadium upgrades). Now, revenue is WAY down with the drop in tourism and slow economy, so I don’t see where the money would come from for UH.

  179. wafan October 14, 2009 5:08 pm

These 12-13 hour days are brutal. I think I need a day to catch up on the past few days.

Hope everyone is doing well, the team is having a great flight on Delta/Northwest/Hawai’ian to Seattle, bus ride/flight to Spokane, then a quick jaunt to Moscow, ID, and the HA staffers are not lost somewhere in either the Pioneer Square or Kettle Falls areas of Washington!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  186. whitey October 14, 2009 5:13 pm

    good game for boise.

  187. whitey October 14, 2009 5:14 pm

cc, i doubt it. if they were at home and the game was like this, yes, but they took it to tulsa at their home.

  188. al October 14, 2009 5:16 pm

kama….just my why of saying that the game this week needs to be played like it is do-or-die.

i won’t be surprised if we beat the spuds outright. sometimes a team plays strangely when they find themselves in an unfamiliar favorites role and the other when backed into a corner.

i hope these theories come true.

  189. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 14, 2009 5:17 pm

Boise wins but gets no luv

  190. d1島 October 14, 2009 5:20 pm

    c_c,

I think whitey is right but of course, it depends on the rest of the games. #1 thru #4 all get challenging games. Going be a great day of CFB!

  191. Derek October 14, 2009 5:37 pm

A very good win “on the road” for Boise St. against a good Tulsa team.
The game wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. Boise St. fumbled a punt return that led to Tulsa first score of the game. They also fumbled a hand off at around midfield. Further, Boise St. went for a field goal from the 2 yard line with the score leading 25-14 which they made. I thought they should have gone for the touchdown because they were moving the ball effectively, either running or passing. If they didn’t make the touchdown Boise St. still had great field position. A touchdown right then and there would have sewn up the game, period. Later, Tulsa had 3th down and 11 inside their own 10 yard line and connected on a long pass play to close to midfield. On the very next play another long play resulted in Tulsa’s last touchdown and that’s how the game ended, 28-21.
What I saw is that Boise St. is a very poised and methodical team and you had the feeling that they were always in control and you knew they were going to win. They know how to move the football w/ nice plays, running and passing. QB Moore is so smooth, and running backs Martin and Avery know what to do w/ the ball. The TE makes critical catches and WRs Pettis and Young run good routes and always catch the ball. Defensively, the Boise St. front 4 is very, very good. I’m very impressed w/ Boise. It doesn’t look good for us next week. With our team right now, we hope to win, but we know it going to be tough and we might lose.
In 2007, we felt the team no matter what that the team would find a way to win….and they did. The refused to lose. Now, unfortunately we find ways to lose. I’ll make my prediction for next week later. Lastly, I wonder how the Boise St. coaching staff would do if they coached the Warriors. I think it might be a different story.

  192. whitey October 14, 2009 5:39 pm

i think slowly SI is slowly putting pressure on having a 16 team playoff. how much clout they have is another question, but they do have a lot of connections in the world of college sports.

  193. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 14, 2009 5:41 pm

Our Warriors are capable of playing methodically and creatively with confidence. All the parts will come together with health and experience.

There’s a lot of young-uns who are learning the ropes and thinking a lot. When their play becomes more instinctive, we will see some good stuff.

    PAU HANA!!

  194. whitey October 14, 2009 5:45 pm

even tho these wed night games seem like a huge inconvience to the WAC, i believe that the dividends outweigh the inconvience. The nation gets to see the WAC teams play any team and that really helps each team’s image when on tv.

  195. whitey October 14, 2009 5:50 pm

we may not be the hottest team in the WAC, and am not sure about attendance per game, but i wouldn’t be surprised if we are in the top 2.

  196. whitey October 14, 2009 5:53 pm

i don’t know if the div 1 requirement for game attendance or stadium size still holds, but if it does, half of the WAC teams will be on the bubble.

  197. whitey October 14, 2009 5:54 pm

would truly be neat if we could be the attendance leader for fb and vb.

  198. whitey October 14, 2009 5:54 pm

and if we were, it would sure take a lot of pressure off JD’s back

  199. whitey October 14, 2009 5:55 pm

    and we scale 200

  200. whitey October 14, 2009 5:55 pm

  202. Slugger October 14, 2009 5:57 pm

    labrat,

BHF2 & I are always keeping an eye out for Ikaika Mahoe, 1) because he is from Hilo town, and 2) I’ve known Ikaika since he was a freshman at NAU in Flagstaff.

Konaboy3, also put in a good word to Ikaika, too.

For the Kauai crew, I see Jett Jasper at the WVB games since he’s not been in the traveling team. Great support for their sisters by Jett & other players who don’t go on the road yet.

    djmitcho,

The guys would be happy to see a supporter at the airport. There weren’t many of us at practice this morning.

  203. OldDiver October 14, 2009 5:59 pm

    Regarding #125

Timing is everything, but we need to understand how recruiting worked under JJ. Ron and Cal were not allowed to make visits, Reinbold was not well liked by the other coaches because he took credit for recruits he had nothing to do with. Mack allowed Ron and Cal to do their thing and guess what, local recruiting has improved.

  204. TYaiea October 14, 2009 6:38 pm

    test test test…is it working?

  205. TYaiea October 14, 2009 6:40 pm

  206. TYaiea October 14, 2009 6:41 pm

okay then, i going take my ball and go home 😆

  207. Shannon October 14, 2009 6:43 pm

    Re:#125

I was just thinking the same thing the other day…when JJ was HC, the team played with SWAGGER. Win or Lose…There was just something about the attitude of the players from 99-07…

  208. TYaiea October 14, 2009 7:01 pm

Yeah shannon, we had the feeling “let them score” cause we going come back and score too and often. Boy those were the days when we had ridiculous total scores…Imua Warriors…play tough…play smart…

  209. isleboy October 14, 2009 7:07 pm

local recruiting improved? need to check last years results…
Do you realize that 5 players did not qualify for admission to UH.
Majority of them were from Hawaii…JJ did not waste his time on players who could not qualify….MAC signs everybody….looks great on paper….LOI day……Come September…nothing…..

  210. Garret October 14, 2009 7:28 pm

If you eat at Jack in the Box and have an American Express credit card, you can get *2* $20 gift cards to Jack in the Box for $20.

    800-955-5225, Option 3, Option 2

  211. d1島 October 14, 2009 7:32 pm

    isleboy,

If UH doesn’t sign those players and they end up as Quali, somebody else going be huhu at the Coach…no can win.

IIRC usually get guys (and gals, I guess) who still no quali on signing day but still working on it (taking SAT’s, classes…). Sometimes you gotta take a chance.

  212. Garret October 14, 2009 7:33 pm

    isleboy,

I agree that losing those recruits to academics hurt. I think that UH highlighted three recruits for special mention in the press release after NLI day and all of the ended up not getting into UH (including Destin Stewart). Maybe UH needs to check into the qualifying status of recruits better?

However, some schools (especially one SEC school in particular who goes WAY overboard) sometimes sign players they *know* will not qualify. The theory behind that is that it might make the player feel more wanted by the school, so when they finish their 2 years at JC they are more likely to go to who signed them out of high school. That doesn’t always work, but it does give some advantage for the recruit. Of course, it does artificially pump up the recruiting ranking for the school…

  213. d1島 October 14, 2009 7:35 pm

…and weren’t there many grumblings about the Former Coach not spending enough time on recruiting?

  214. RainbowCliff October 14, 2009 7:51 pm

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, with the Warriors enroute to Idaho I pray for the team and coaches a safe journey and that ALL who attends happy travels.

As for me GREAT folks of Aloha I am 14 days away from a MILESTONE achievement. The 17 year anniversary for Ex-Rainbow Warrior Cliff Sanchez has reached it’s seating capacity just yesterday 10-13-09. Invitations went out Thursday 10-08-09 and 5 days later “NO SEATS AVAILABLE” as signs are up reading “Cliff Day Sold Out. Standing room capacity only.” I am HONORED to have a gathering embrace me with admiration and affection.

Distinguish Leaders will be present as my Wooten parents are cooking up a FEAST from Tuna Noodle Casserole, Dirty Rice, Candid Yams, Mix Vegtables, Bake Chicken, Chicken Enchilades, Garden Salad, macaroni cheese, Glaze Ham, hot water corn bread, black eye peas, fried catfish, greens and Pineapple up side down cake, bake apple/cherry/peach pie cobbler and ALL the bake cookies you can name as I say “Thank You” to every parent who comes up to me gleeming with excitement on what they have prepare for me in HONOR of 17 years working with their children and other parents children.

With each day passing bye I reflect on the DEDICATION of 17 perfect years in which I am bless with so much FAITH and DETERMINATION that I tribute it ALL from the Aloha State and the people who ALWAYS believe in me and the children who IDOLIZE me from my playing days as a Rainbow Warrior as I was SO TOUCH when they asked me for my autograph.

Now 27 years later Tsaiko Nation I write to you a humble servant who has taken your ALOHA SPIRIT and for 17 DYNAMIC years has empowered HUNDREDS of inner city children of South Central Los Angeles in which a celebration will be the talk of a community that is no longer in crisis BUT of “polynesian hospitality”.

I would like to take this time in thanking all of you for your friendship, support and encouraging words. I am SO PROUD to be a scholarship student athlete graduate to the University Of Hawaii and EVEN PROUDER that I came back of wanting to do good for you kind folks and fruition is just only 14 days away.

The math is quite simple: 17 years – 0 absences=Dedication+Professionalism over SUCCESS !

A HUI HO ! Sincerely, Cliff Sanchez aka RAINBOW WARRIOR FOREVER !

  215. OldDiver October 14, 2009 8:04 pm

    Regarding # 210

Sorry, but your reply about non-qualifiers has nothing to do with my post. JJ had his share of non-qualifiers. While it is an important point, getting kids to consider Hawaii was my point. Besides with other WAC and Pac-10 schools having exceptions to their admissions policies and UH having no exceptions we are not recruiting on a level playing field.

  216. Stephen Tsai October 14, 2009 8:07 pm

    Hey, all:
I’ll check on the salaries when I get back. I’m pretty sure that Rolo and Brian Smith earned $80,000 last year. They were at the low end. Ikaika Malloe earned $100,000, I believe. I’m sure Tormey is in that range. I’m guessing Gordy Shaw is probably around there, too.
But I don’t have exact numbers.

As for recruiting, I think sometimes they sign players with the intent of “recommending” that they go to a certain place, like a non-football-playing school or a JC with ties to Hawaii.
There’s no reason anybody who signs can’t be a qualifier. There’s enough time to take the SAT multiple times.

  217. OldDiver October 14, 2009 8:11 pm

Good point ST, and of course no HS kid who signs a LOI is a qualifier until he or she gets a qualifying SAT score and graduates HS.

  218. Garret October 14, 2009 8:12 pm

    ST,

Yes, some programs have preferred JCs that they “recommend” players to and keep tabs on while the player is there.

Thank you for those salary numbers…wow, that is on the low end of the salary range. Tormey and Shaw would be huge bargains at $100k each.

  219. A-House October 14, 2009 8:15 pm

    TYAiea:

    You’ve got mail!

  220. Garret October 14, 2009 8:17 pm

    OldDiver,

I like how the Texas high schools have active programs in place to make sure that a high school athlete can get their degree requirements done early and get all their admission requirements taken care of well before NLI day. Athletes take the SAT in their Junior year and don’t have to worry about getting a qualifying score when they are seniors. That is also why so many football players in Texas enter college a semester early like Billy Ray did…I think this year Texas had 8 or so high school recruits graduate high school a semester early and start at UT in January.

I’m sure that the coaches love not having to worry about an athlete signing on NLI day. If a recruit is already enrolled in your school and taking classes in January, you don’t have to worry about their signature in February!

I wish that the counselors at Hawaii schools were able to help students set up class schedules so that they fulfill admission requirements by the first semester of their senior year and emphasized taking the SAT early.

    Hey Garrett (on # 213),

Isn’t there supposed to be an NCAA Clearinghouse that indicates the status / eligibility of recruits? Seems like there’s been at least 2-3 UH players whose eligibility was delayed through no fault of the coaching staff or University. Could it have been that some credits (on transcripts from previous institutions) were later deemed not to be kosher or perhaps were questionable in terms of being transferable?

This Saturday’s game @ Idaho is the “make or break” game for this season. Right now Hawaii’s 2-3, with 8 games left. If we lose to Idaho, not only will it be a huge confidence deflator, but drops Hawaii to 0-3 in the WAC, and forces us to win 5 of the remaining 7 games in order to be bowl eliglible, with 4 of those games being against: Boise, @ Nevada, Navy & Wisconsin and even having to play @ San Jose State won’t be an easy task… Scary thing about it is that it seems we’re on a downhill slide game after game…

  244. protector October 14, 2009 8:59 pm

    Garret (on # 143 referring to # 138),

I’m only guessing but Mac seems to be a guy who shows loyalty to others & values loyalty as well. If he’s here for 5 years I expect the assistant coaches are welcome to stay 5 years to unless of course thy receive offers to be coordinators or HCs elsewhere or perhaps even assistant coach at a higher profile University.

As for the Lee brothers, I think he & Ron Lee go way back when he was OC for Coach Mac at Aloha High School, wasn’t it? I think the Lee brothers are not only grateful to him for keeping him on, but letting them give more input & expanded responsibilities as opposed to when they were under JJ. I don’t get the feeling that Ron Lee has a bruised ego because of Rolo’s expanding role on Offense & I’m sure Mac is open to any suggestions by the Lee brothers and (they) aren’t afraid of repercussions because of it.

  250. bighilofan2 October 14, 2009 9:13 pm

    Protector,

think you’ve hit it on the head.

Plus, I think we have to be more realistic about what is going on during the game. Thats where coaching from the overhead and giving directions to the D, and the D listening to the overhead, comes into play.

Like for example, Miano choosing Torres for starting role at Safety against the Vandals.. A review of the FSU video showed indecision, the Safety was running around with no real direction too often and was too often out of position to make a play. I blame coaching for that. The discrepancy should have been seen from the overhead, I saw it from my seat, and that message should have been sent to the field commanders to let the Safety know what they were seeing. Not wait till after the game to make the observation.

I didn’t get this from any player. I asked online fortune teller crystal ball, and she’s pretty good at that kine prognostication. 😯

    😀 😀 😀

C’mon coaches, you all can do better.

    Go Warriors.

    Manoa Mist (on # 64),

I love your thoughts and feelings. And the botttom line is we all SHOULD care about Uh sports. Unfortunately, since I started sporadically blogging (started only after the Sugar Bowl), I’ve noticed a number of bloggers who do not care about UH sports, the University or Hawaii in general. Their blogs amount to nothing more than taunting, bashing and name-calling wihout offering anything positive or constructive. Their suggestions usually culminate in firing the coaches and for fans to give up hope. This is why when some of those fans make a pretense about being fans, it’s so transparent & galling. It’s okay for true fans to be disappointed, frustrated & even angry at the present status, but a true fan will support the team through thick & thin and not be “fair weather” fans. There were many fans who gave up during the Von Appen tenure, but there was still the hardcore 25-30,000 fans that showed up & suffered. It’s shameful that there wasn’t even 40,000 fans to come to a big game like Fresno State.

    Protector,

Head coach Greg McMackin is not surprised by Lee’s ability to direct an offense. He and Lee coached together at Oregon Tech in the late 1980s when McMackin was head coach and Lee was the offensive coordinator. OTU led the nation in passing all three years with Lee as offensive coordinator.

Oregon Tech was a Div II team back then. I believe Coach Mac brought the team to the top 5 nationally for several years and won two coach of the year awards, as well.

  262. madeinhawaii October 14, 2009 9:22 pm

Wanted to ask anyone who knows. Do you remember a play (I think it was in the 4th Qtr, but could be wrong) where the Fresno QB threw a quick (horizontal) pass to the wideout & the DB just got burned because he could not make the open-field tackle and it went for a 17 yard TD. Do you know who was defending on the play? The DB made a quick agressive move toward the receiver but unfortunately missed the tackle.

It sounded strange that they’d be in Pulliam when they’re playing in Idaho, so I remembered it. These days, you can’t see the passenger lists. Maybe text ST and see if he has the inside scoop!

  285. bighilofan2 October 14, 2009 9:38 pm

i think its a crying shame that we gotta go JUCO fo find Haku, Paipai, Geordan, Torres kind peeps. deze bruddas came to play from day 1.

i really think that Rolo and Brian gotta make the most of this opportunity and hammer our Warriors into a fine offensive machine. now.
Its your time, you two guys! Look like you’re involved! Show me a shrewd, positive and wanna be a killa kinda face during the game.

and Miano and Cal, gotta get on the same page, talk to each other, show me proof you talking to each other. Like for example, The Safety play the whole game was the result of a slowcom between upstairs and downstairs. While you may or may not think it, I believe it was a fact. Indecision. Indecision. The Safety had minimal or No help from the sidelines. At all.

Go ahead, call me a liar.

And if you fix that, you’ll be fixing the problems on the team.

I said it that way, but its only a suggestion and my opinion. 😀

And I sincerely wanna wish you guys the best of luck cuz we backing you and want the best for you! cuz you represent us! Hawaii!

now suck it up and go coach!

    Go Warriors!

    To bighilofan2 on # 251,

I think you’re absolutely right about the overhead coaching in the booth. They ARE supposed to see the formations, patterns & tendencies up there much easier. Someone posted the other day that Robert Kekaula was making some very astute observations & intuitive recommendations about plays (when Fresno defenders came up to the line hinting at blitz, then quicky retreated). Could the safety’s inept play be attributed to Fresno disguising the plays so well? There were times that Ryan Matthews looked as good as advertised, though. He was fast & strong. UH did a good job of keeping him as bottled up as they did.

  296. whitey October 14, 2009 9:46 pm

who is upstairs in the booth looking out for the defense and telling Miano? Or telling Tormey? Who is telling who? You guessing? Or you knowing?

Technically I am “knowing”, but could be guessing. When there was the “switch” of Ron Lee to Rolo for offensive play calling, I dialed in to Bobby Curran that morning to ask him who is in the booth for UH since he can see. According to Curran, the coaches in the booth for the Central Arkansas game was Ron Lee, Mike Smith, Dave Aranda, Tony Tuioti and George Lumpkin.

Last season it was the same deal with some different personnel. Last season I think it was Ron Lee, Alex Gerke, Dave Aranda, and George Lumpkin.

  316. bighilofan2 October 14, 2009 10:06 pm

    quick study:

i went to da Vandals Official Site and looked up how day got da name Vandal. Turns out 90 years ago had one basketball coach named Edmundsen whose bb tame would win games by “vandalizing” da odda team by their D. the name got popular, the school adopted da name and now dare da Vandalz.

Thanks for the info. Dang… Too bad for us UH fans, heard good things about him and he would have been a redshirt freshman this season. Bob Nash’s roster could use some talented YOUNG players since we are back to 5+ seniors again!!!

Satterwhite used to ball with a friend of mine so I’m sure he’ll be disappointed to find this out.

  318. djmitcho October 14, 2009 10:06 pm

Pullman is in Washington. Moscow is in Idaho. The 2 border towns are seperated by about 8 miles.

  319. djmitcho October 14, 2009 10:10 pm

My other guess is that the team either flew to the west coast commercial, then chartered a flight to Lewiston, ID, which was where they stayed 2 years ago. The time that slugger says they will be getting into Pullman only puts one other option on the table. The team flew into Seattle and then is busing across the state to Pullman. Just like WSU did when they played UH @ qwest.

  320. Slugger October 14, 2009 10:10 pm

Been seeing Hiram Thompson & Bill Amis walking behind the pool in the mornings as I go to practice. I’m planning on going to the 11 pm game. Wheeha!

an idaho sportswriter predicts where the rainbow warrior men’s basketball team will end up.

    last.

I think the Idaho writer did a good summation of last season, including his take on UH’s cupcake preseason lineup. I bleed for the season ticket holders who are commendable in their support of the Warriors only to attend a bb game of nobodies. Jackson Wheeler must have spent long nights finding teams with losing records willing to come out to Hawaii to play. I guess 18 wins is doable for Nash’s requirement for a roll over.

ralph…it would be nice to have zane johnson as the reporter notes as one of the newcomers. but, he got it wrong as he must sit out this year because of the transfer rule. although we do get jeremy lay this year.

well, let’s hope that the reporter gets it wrong.

i forgot that this is nash’s rollover year. it will be interesting.

    Good morning Tsaikos…

For off-island fans, the Idaho and Boise games are listed for ESPN Gameplan and ESPN360. Just curious if Oceanic is making any money on their streaming deal.

  344. Ralph October 15, 2009 1:18 am

wbb should be practicing this week with the coaches, October 16 I think was previously stated in the media

  345. protector October 15, 2009 2:13 am

    Hey Ralph,

With the cupcake schedule, a lot of home games & a vastly improved (newcomers + returnees) team, I’m drinking the koolaid baby & predicting 20+ wins!
