Had a nice chat with Riley Wallace, who offered these updates:
• Carl English became a first-time dad.
• Phil Martin is playing in Italy.
• Michael Kuebler played in Israel last season.

There used to be a time when sports marketing began with knowing and understanding the wishes of the customers. One of the giants, Conrad Passas, has left us. He’ll be missed, but we should remember that his basic concepts are applicable today.

From sports media relations director Derek Inouchi:
Sitting here in DC airport and looking at my mug on your blog. Thanks.
Tell ur bloggers new media guides will be online but don’t think we’ll be posting older ones. We’ll look into it, though. I’m headed to Tampa for our SID convention. Will be back July 7.

As Stretch noted, the second anniversary party has filled its slots. By the way, Stretch, add Jim Leahey to the list. But the committee is accepting spots on the waiting list. You won’t want to miss it, mostly because of the fun of drinking beverages out of the Stretch-designed mugs. Here’s Stretch’s mug shot:

So the players who come in on the expanded roster will get only 2 days of practice before they are practicing/conditioning on their own again.

    Re: PPV packages

Fans will be sent a letter regarding the pay-per-view discount and will need to submit a form with payment to Oceanic to have their choice of cable accounts activated for road telecasts.

I’ve asked this question before what if one person picks up the tickets for different families, only one family get’s the discount?? My family buys 10 season tickets from 4 different homes.

    Re: Oregon State game time
The game is going to be 1pm (oregon time). For those who are attending, looks like we might have to make a breakfast Cattle Call if we meet in Portland or a bruch in the Corvallis area.

any word on the offensive linemen we observed on friday? personally, i don’t think they’d have to redshirt, they could step in and help out, especially in the first game. too bad bhf2 wasn’t there, he’d welcome them with open arms.

did you get a photo for ST? proof is in the pudding bro…..

  22. Stephen Tsai June 29, 2008 9:03 am

It would be nice if slotback Rick Taylor makes the travel roster.
Taylor was Tim Tebow’s teammate at Nease High. He’s the only player to have worked out with both Tebow and Colt Brennan.

    June 28th, 2008 at 8:56 am
re-The August 18th launch of the new and improved official UH athletic web site

Whatever they do I hope the new site realizes the notion that potential athletes, recruits and potential students to the school often open the door and look what’s inside. And they can be either be captured or released from being interested from the school. And maybe the program. As much as the school spends on landscaping and maintaining a campus that makes the school inviting and welcoming, the same foresight should be put into improving on the web old sight in making the new sight attractive and appealing to the athlete, students and even the fan.

The focal point of the new web site should extract a warmth and strike a cord with the athlete, students, fans and visitor. Visually pictures of teams can do this. And daily stories and stats do, too. But what’s behind the heart and soul of the program should have a special tab where we hear the voices relaying this attractiveness to the school. The nurturing effect, so to speak, I believe will work in delivering this now missing warmth. The mission statement of the school, including letters from the President, Chancellor, athletic director, coaches. And one step further prestigious alumni and leaders of the State of Hawaii, including Governor and Senators and Representatives should be honored and at the same time promote athletics at the UH and the state in relaying statements for the visitor to embrace upon. A special tab for the professional athletes in all programs with updates can have a nurturing effect.

As it stands now the focal point of the old site’s home page is buy, sell and trade tickets. When I open the homepage this is what I see. And this isn’t good. Peddling the tickets I see is purposeful for the UH but it turns me off if this is the first thing I see when I open the UH web site. I don’t want to see ticket selling. Instead the selling that’s important is the program. And the State. Something indigenous to Hawaii and UH athletics should be the first thing the visitor sees. Not buy, sell and trade.

For the UH the resources are there to improve upon. Leaving a good impression on the visitor…and who knows maybe the next big recruit to the program can happen if you impress upon them something thats impressive. I think having your leaders of the school, state and distinguish alumni writing a few words would leave an impression on the visitor.

Visually having a picture of the campus, foreground, and having Diamond Head and the ocean in the background would be a good selling point. But the biggest selling point are the island’s leaders and UH alumni and if they can say a few words it would make for an impressive web site.

And not to be forgotten I think a special tab identifying the hard work that the band members and cheer leading squads of what they do for the program should find a new place on the new web site.

Combining the union of what goes behind the program, a few words from distinguish alumni, and the daily press releases from the athletic office balanced with whats happening today and the lore of the past would have a very good nurturing effect on the visitor. And this is very important for the new athletic web site to potentially accomplish.

Thanks for the condonlences from my Hawai’i friends.

I have come to a decision about which stadium will I be on August 30th. I will be at Sanford Stadium in Athens but I wish I could be at Florida Field at the same time for the Warriors game.

I still feel really good about Hawai’i’s chances against the Gators.

There are Hawaii and run and shoot connections to Nease High where Tebow played and where Rick Taylor played and coached with his Dad. The head coach of Nease, Craig Howard, was a teammate of Wes Suan’s and another Oregon Mouse Davis deciple. Howard coached at Oregon Tech with their head coach Mack and his assistant there, Ron Lee.

    Good Morning my Tsaiko Palys!

Got up late, and then had to drag this ovah from do old blog…

djmitcho ~ What about all those festivals get up dere surrounding the 4th of July? Wouldn’t the Wenatchee Indians be dragging their T-P’s into the fairgrounds and setting up their village right about now next to their cousins the Yakima Indians?

If not, you can always join the Rattlesnake Roundup I guess, that’s a good way to practice your Texas two step!

Don’t worry about us Wessai guys…we always manage to find something to either heat things up, or cool ‘em down…our Tsaikettes, not the Rattlesnakes! Yikes!

Article about the the rapidly increasing travel costs are forcing college teams to change their scheduling plans. I noticed that someone (mctruck I think) posted yesterday that SMU just signed long-term scheduling contracts with TCU and North Texas, both in the Dallas area, and with Baylor (fairly near Dallas). This article is from the Memphis and Mississippi perspective of the travel issue and they specifically cite travel costs to Hawaii.

With fuel prices soaring, the costs of charter buses and flights rising apace and the specter of baggage surcharges now an expensive reality for those flying commercial, athletic departments large and small are facing up to new financial realities.

“Everybody’s going to be affected,” Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone said. “We have a $45 million budget this year and we’re trying to do everything we can to save on fuel. … We’re trying to be more prudent.”

In an ominous sign of the times, Arizona State recently cut funding for three men’s programs — swimming, tennis and wrestling — due to what athletic director Lisa Love described as “economic realities.”

“We absolutely are concerned about it. We’ve had a couple meetings about it. … We’re going to have to adjust and make the best of it,” Johnson said. “Nobody has an unlimited budget. I think you’ll see more regional contests. The cross-country trips, you’re not going to see as many of those as you used to. We’re not going to be sending our teams to Hawaii again unless the trips are paid for.”

While tournaments such as the Maui Invitational will gladly pick up the tab to bring John Calipari’s high-profile basketball team to the islands, such arrangements are less common in nonrevenue sports.

Boone, who anticipates a 20-percent across-the-board increase in associated travel costs during the 2008-09 school year at Ole Miss, is worried that $4-per-gallon gas prices could increase significantly in the coming months.

“Fuel, food, lodging — they’re all going up,” Boone said. “With charter flights, for instance, they give us a base price, but we have a fuel surcharge and we don’t know what that will be yet.”

Clary booked the 62-member traveling party on an AirTran flight through Atlanta that he says will cost $60-$70 more per person than it did two years ago.

To limit expenses, Rhodes will not let its players check baggage on that trip. Whatever can’t be carried will be shipped with team equipment by rental truck to Texas. Clary estimates the school will save $2,100 as a result.

“It used to take $60 to fill up the van with gas. Now it costs $110,” Nadicksbernd said. “We raise money for scholarships so we can put players on the field. We’ll just have to increase our efforts and try to raise even more money now.”

Article mentions the big cheerleading camp run by UHi.

Each summer, 100 of the nation’s top high school cheerleaders are invited to attend a training camp hosted by the University of Hawaii to which Haddad was recently honored as one of the invitees.

  45. Kekoa June 29, 2008 10:05 am

  46. Garret June 29, 2008 10:07 am

Oklahoma State’s AD just donated $1 mil to their school! This is such a contrast to UH’s former AD and to how UH cannot even finish getting JD’s contract together:

Oklahoma State University athletic director Mike Holder credits everything he’s learned and attained from his days as an OSU student.

Holder, who earned his OSU undergraduate and master’s degrees in business, announced Saturday he has made a $1 million donation to the Spears School of Business at OSU. The money will go towards the creation of an entrepreneurship department within the school of business.

Holder said he was moved by the generous $57.2 million donation last Thursday from oilman Malone Mitchell III and his wife, Amy Mitchell, to make his donation to the school of business.

Article about the non-BCS-conference teams that could make it to a BCS game this year. They do NOT mention UH but they do mention BYU and Fresno State as their top 2 most likely teams. This is what they said about Fresno State:

    #2 Fresno State

Big Games: at Rutgers (9/1), vs. Wisconsin (9/13), at UCLA (9/27), at Boise State (11/28)

Why they will succeed and earn the bid: They, like TCU, have it set in place for a run. They return almost every skill position player from last year besides Clifton Smith, but they are deep at the RB position as it is. Tom Brandstater will need to be as consistent and throw even better this year if Fresno wants a chance to perform on the national stage.

Why they will fall short in their attempt: they face a tough schedule in the beginning of their season, and will need to win both and at worst one if they intend on banking on a big season. If they can make it through that tough stretch, then they should be fine as the WAC is definitely on a down year.

  49. Kelli June 29, 2008 10:10 am

HAHAHA! Derek’s message made my day! He’s famous now because of that picture. I didn’t even know there was an SID convention. I guess there’s conventions for everything. Hmm… He didn’t ask if I wanted to go.

  50. Garret June 29, 2008 10:11 am

This is what they said about BYU, the team they think is most likely to make it to a BCS game this season from the non-BCS-conferences:

    #1 BYU

Big Games: at Washington (9/6), at UCLA (9/13), at TCU (10/16), at Utah (11/22)

Why they will succeed and earn the bid: Max Hall and Harvey Unga are the cornerstones of this offense and will have no trouble scoring points. This team is as loaded on offense as they are on defense and will pose a problem to any BCS team they approach. Also, Hall brings his top 4 receivers back with him.

Why they will fall short in their attempt: Well their lone challengers seem to be UCLA and Washington, while they aren’t high caliber Pac-10 teams, they still can give the Cougars problems. Also, their hardest conference opponents are at home when BYU plays them, making it more convincing to the committee, but posing a much tougher challenge in the end.

So there they are, your 2008-2009 BCS Party Crashers. Now will they dominate and rise to a #1 ranking? Probably not, but they still can make a run at the Top-10 and earn the bid to a BCS bowl, which really isn’t that bad of a consolation considering theyre in non-BCS conferences.

  51. Garret June 29, 2008 10:13 am

    ST,

Thank you for the training camp schedule, for the update from Riley Wallace (congratulations to new Dad Carl English!), and for the message from Derek Inouchi! I am very happy that the media guide will be online, as that is a good step to improve the information available through UH!

    Garrett,

howzit. thought we wuz waiting for the new fiscal year next month to announce JD’s contract. something about we get one temporary/acting AD with a year contract.

  53. Garret June 29, 2008 10:14 am

Condolences to the friends and family of Conrad Passas.

  54. Garret June 29, 2008 10:16 am

    bighilofan2,

I guess it would make sense to have the contract announced for the start of the new fiscal year since they have waited so long already. However, they wasted no time in elevating Clapp to interim AD (and giving him a big pay boost) in January and Ferd’s article didn’t mention any reason why JD’s contract was being delayed. Ferd’s article made JD’s higher-ups like bad, with the implication that UH was delaying the contract without a good reason.

Thanks d1shima for your response on the option at SLS.

At SLS, the QB’s were too valuable to be used for target practice for DE’s.

When #1 son was a Jr. he was 2nd team OL. They were told, no way they would smell PT as long as the starting QB was on the field. (Some kid named Chang, I think it was)

SOAP BOX TIME – skip this because it isn’t directly sports-related

A very quick response to the anti-rail post in the last blog – i don’t know where the writer got his figures, but the additonal tax paid on $40,000 worth of goods & services covered by Hawai`i’s General Excise Tax would be $200 a year or $3000 over the 15 years. The increase is from 4% paid by the rest of the state to 4.5% paid here on O`ahu.

Granted, that $200 would rise as the costs of goods & services increase over time due to inflation, but then so would the cost of gas and diesel fuel.

One of the problems with the anti-rail arguments is that they assume that there are unlimited supplies of petroleum available to make into fuel. Unfortunately, every aspect of our lives is controlled by the supply of oil – the power to run this computer, the transportation costs as well as the production costs of the cup of coffee sitting by my side as well as the soap in the shower stall, the ink used to print the books we picked up at the library yesterday afternoon after eating a nice lunch cooked over a gas stove at Cinnamon’s in Kailua – all these anti-rail folks care about is the freedom to drive their cars no matter how much it costs because they have the money to do so.

In addition to all of these reasons, Hawai`i, like other islands around the world is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of sea level rise and increasing numbers of significant weather events as well as long-term climate changes stemming from a huge increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Denying reality will not change it for the rest of us.

    BACK TO SPORTS:

Mahalo, Stephen, for posting the August practice sessions. Which ones are open to the public?

Also, would you please try to find the answers in my 7:51 pm post yesterday.

Also, please try to get the posting numbers back!!

Time to go – want to get the chores done before Kailua reaches the boiling point. DrDoc says that when we finish we should catch a bus into town and go to the Restaurant Row $1 theatres which are still going strong. Sounds good to me.

    .

Washington State’s backup QB is transferring. This could be significant when UH plays them late in the season if they have some injuries at QB, as their depth has been reduced.

Washington State backup quarterback Cole Morgan is transferring to Western Washington in search of playing time.

“I need to get the football out of me before it’s too late,” said Morgan, who led Ballard High School to the 2003 Class 4A state-championship game won by Pasco.

  62. Garret June 29, 2008 12:15 pm

Washington just pulled scholarships from 2 of their players.

The school made no official announcement that Hasty, a junior running back, had finally been cut loose for good, simply releasing an updated roster on its Web site that didn’t include his name. The name of senior cornerback Jordan Murchison, who battled legal trouble last season and played sparingly, was also absent from the roster. A school spokesman later confirmed that neither will play for the Huskies again. Both were recently told by UW coach Tyrone Willingham that they were not having their scholarships renewed for the 2008 season.

Hasty was considered the plum of Willingham’s first recruiting class at UW in 2005. He impressed coaches with his play early on as a true freshman and he made trips to away games at UCLA and Oregon as Willingham debated whether to play him before it was decided he would redshirt.

A school spokesman said Hasty and Murchison were academically eligible.

Alabama fans are starting to wonder if they are getting their money’s worth from Saban.

Nearly a year and a half into Nick Saban’s tenure at Alabama — with $6 million spent on his salary alone — has the school gotten a good return on its money?

The rap sheet on Saban at Alabama — well, perhaps, not an appropriate phrase to employ this week — is seven wins and six losses. The school is making massive profits from the man since you can’t beg, borrow or steal your way to get seats for this fall’s games.

Saban appears to be one of the most competent and intelligent coaches the Tide has had in eons.

But what about 10 players being arrested for a collection of charges ranging from the garden-variety disorderly conduct to first-degree robbery to the latest — five counts of distribution of cocaine? (In Mike Shula’s four forgettable years, Alabama had five players arrested.)

Good to see Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao holding it down in the boxing world eventhough MMA has taken over.

Carl English – Heard he is currently playing in Spain and will be playing for Canadian National Team as well. Still trying to get on an NBA team too, he was an MVP and all star last year I believe. Hope he makes it…

Re: new UH website: It would be nice to also include former athletes and their accomplishments thanks to the opportunities given to them by the UH. For example, a friend of mine who played football did not finish his degree in his 5 playing years but thanks to a program available to former athletes, he was able to get assistance to complete his degree. (Can’t remember the name of the program and don’t know if it still is around. Nonetheless, it goes to the fact that UH takes care of their athletes even after their playing days are over.)

Another nice piece would be to shine more light on the letter winners club, circle of honor, etc. To me, help recruits see what they will get with their university experience and how it will impact them into the future. Lots of athletes like to be the best. They like to strive for excellence.

    Just my two cents…

  75. Ralph June 29, 2008 2:03 pm

UH has a lousy website – to busy, or the layout makes it look to busy…how about some music or a video section that opens when we open the site…Kansas State uses it to promote a sports feature or coach’s message that is breaking news or at least, current news.

Houston Texans site has a great music intro..tie UH site into under armour gear with music and maybe we’ll start seeing more people wearing green under armour “H” logo gear on game days. I have never seen a UH event with a sea of green, we’ve had white out days in BB, but imagine the whole stadium in green or SSC in green

  76. Barry Markowitz June 29, 2008 2:06 pm

Kekoa, my bro, my uso, my spiritual advisor, when LizK is busy…if it is parents or alumni giving the bad rap on Tengan…I would dismiss it. For my radio segment I always got calls from parents/alumni regarding kid’s coaches in both the ILH and OIA (my ears are stlling buring from the Kahuku player strike stuff) My sources inside staffs and around them usually gave me the bigger picture, and some of the behind the scenes stuff that you would never believe the coaches had to deal with (which was never reported primarily to protect the kids or because it was too petty). I stand by Tengan as a quality guy for UH, as a St. Louis PE teach, or anywhere he may choose to go. I have no opinion as to whether Delbert would be a good AD at St. Louis or not (I do like Afoa)…I have only had experience watching Tengan closely on the field and in person. He has always been a thoughtful gentleman. As far as St. Louis’ clutch losses, which I believe is the real root of the anger…I apologize for offending here, but I felt Tengan overachieved with the talent he had. St. Louis has only had a few real stars lately compared to the Cal Lee Days, but should be commended for playing exceptionally well as a team. St. Louis had the best o-line in the state as far as consistency, without having across the board superstars. Having visited Leleihua’s Spring Practice a month ago, having watched Leleihua get beat by Punahou last fall, and having been on the field for the State Championship game vs. St. Louis, I found that Leleihua has incredible talent. You wouldn’t believe the talent of the underclassmen there. Leleihua will be a power for the next two years. Would everybody be holding hands with Tengan had he won States this past season? Leliehua has raw kids, and some with early academic issues who were nurtured into a refined machine by the state championship. Personally I would put my efforts into saluting the Mules head coach, than spending one second thinking ill will of Tengan.

Decided I didn’t want to influence the kid with any suggestion of downing the good stuff, like you kindly provided last Karaoke Call. I am very appreciative, and I am sure it will become a collectors item…no, I promise I will not e-bay it. Mahalos Stretch. 92. Barry Markowitz June 29, 2008 3:53 pm

Our little Tsaiko, Winnie, would like to lurk on Warrior Beat (so she can learn about rail, shot glasses, cute players with tats, etc), but only has an Nintendo DS (which is not internet friendly). Please let me know if any of you have kids or grandkids that have a current generation Sony PSP (no need the games) that they are bored with and would like to trade for a mint condition Nintendo DS with 4 games, charger, and case. Yes Garrett, it has Hannah Montana, Animal Crossing, Tetrus, and Brain Boost. At my daughters intermediate school there is a clique of Nintendo DS kids…I think she is growing in independence and maturity and realizes that when she hangs with the Tsaiko’s she eats well and gets to wear a badge that others at Aloha Stadium bow down to.

Barry ~ I just sit and listen to what others who are close to the situation are saying about Tengan. I have no personal knowledge of the man, but I do respect the folks who do. I’m sure there are other opinions, but you do have to ask yourself why he made the move and then relegate himself to remaining as the PE teacher…at the same school…hah??

Isn’t that a bit like JJ leaving his Head Coach position and then staying on as the Head Trainer. I’m real curious about that sort of transition in Tengan’s case.

  99. wafan June 29, 2008 4:35 pm

    Hi everyone!

Back from KC, Mizzura. HOT and HUMID!!! Spectacular thunder storms and lightening shows. Kids did well but no medals. Still they are in the top 2% in the nation in their skills areas. Whoo-hoo! The best part is they are all underclassmen and are raring to come back and get started next year. Yeah.

I think we set a record here today. It’s just after 7:20 and it is still 90-degrees. Geez! That means it was around 95 during the hottest part of the day — around 5 this after noon. About the only nice thing is that it is not humid.

So, what has been going on here? What did I miss? How could I get a mug from Stretch?

BG . . . I will be in contact about the UA shirt. Sorry for the long delay — been busy with the kids.

LizK . . . how does it look for another OSU ticket?

  100. Garret June 29, 2008 4:36 pm

    BarryM,

Isn’t there an Opera Browser for the DS? The DS already has WiFi so she should be able to surf the web with her DS. We already have a DS-Lite but no PSP, so we can’t trade with you.

We just got back from seeing the Sesame Street Show: Elmo Grows Up. It was a good show, I’d recommend anyone with kids 4 and younger to see it if it goes to Hawaii. Lori won the tickets from her radio station, so we got to go for free. Our kids know that we won’t buy them any souveniers at a show so it was a cheap afternoon out!

    Back to family stuff now…

  101. Ralph June 29, 2008 4:38 pm

Wafan Stretch announced earlier that UH has OSU tix available….

  102. wafan June 29, 2008 4:41 pm

    Ralph . . .

Thank you for the heads up.

LizK was working on attempting to secure another ticket for Izzy to attend the OSU game in the same seating section as the rest of us.

  103. Kekoa June 29, 2008 4:43 pm

Barry ~ email BG for the sign-up operations plan for his Designated Driver program. He has the official EIS evacuation plan he will email you.

Once again for those who haven’t already heard the announcement from Stretch, that the Blog Bash is at critical mass – I’m afraid that if you haven’t sent him your email and or your check already, it may be too late! When that happens, all he can do is automatically place you on his wait/cancellation list.

  104. Barry Markowitz June 29, 2008 5:04 pm

Kekoa, you are very right…I really don’t think any of us has all the information, but I will error in judgment on the guy who has played by the rules and appears to be respected by local and Div 1 coaches. Seeing how Tengan’s career goes from here will tell us his worthiness, as if there is any baggage, future employers will know. Football and sports is a very small incestuous family. I may be under LizK’s influence too much, as she imparts to me to look for all that is good in others. I truly want to see goodness in all…its sad that we all usually fail to be Mother Teresa all the time (well except LizK, Gigi, Esme, Jojo, D1, James, DPK, Jeje, Wena, Leila, Al, Peaches, & Jason, of course). As far as Tengan staying…could it be a simple explanation that he truly loves St. Louis and the kids and wants to maintain a longterm commitment there? Many, many people work at low paying jobs at Kahuku H.S. because they truly are “Red Raiders For Life”. All of us that lived in Kahuku’s Community have seen coaches come and go, but alot of those committed background people are still there 20 years later. I think there are several UH employees that have remained committed to UH because they love our university, regardless of the good and the bad that comes with it. Many alumns who work at a place they attended do so, even with the problems, because they want to make things “pono” over the long run. I will keep an open mind…and luckily I am part of no process to determine anyone’s future, except what time my dog gets fed.

Garrett, so I just checked. Winnies Nintendo DS is a “lite”..I don’t know what the Opera Browser thing is…maybe you could e-mail me if it applies to the Nintendo DS Lite.

  105. Crusader For Life June 29, 2008 5:35 pm

perception, reality, imagination….combine all 3 of these and you have your reality of the situation at st louis.

tengan is gone, and it is a new era for the Crusaders. thanks for your efforts, and good luck in your future endeavors to Delbert Tengan.

in good faith, i could not support him for anything to do with UH. as far as BM and his opinion, it is that, your opinion and although you might have the ‘scoops’ for other teams, you are definitely outside of the ‘circle’ at kalaepohaku.

let it rest already, change is inevitable, transition is the challenge. let SL concentrate on getting a new football, basketball and baseball coach and move forward. the athletic department has had minimal leadership and wallowed in mediocrity these past few years. regarding the talent the last two years on the football team….excellent, with a combined record of 22-2. how can someone say that SL did not have talent.

i read a quote from one of the regular bloggers on SH that placed it in the Advertiser comments regarding the Leilehua game vs. St Louis,
“i love seeing mediocre athletes being coached to be great players, but i hate seeing great athletes being coached to be mediocre players”

good bye and good luck DT. thank you for all the help the last 3 years with getting your players to college. those inside of the ropes know the real truth……and that is only one of the items to consider with your tenure. as in any well run corporation or organization, no one is irreplaceable. aloha

  106. Bulla June 29, 2008 5:38 pm

    kekoa,

  107. Bulla June 29, 2008 5:40 pm

    Crusader for Life,

everyone has their opinion, that is life. SL did go 22-2 these past 2 seasons despite the challenges. the bottom line is that it’s over, the season, and DT’s tenure.

I wish only the best for SL, the administrators, the coaches and the student athletes. our family is grateful for the opportunities SL provided ‘the beast’. he is ‘a saint louis man’.

can’t wait for the BASH!!! :):):)

  108. Crusader For Life June 29, 2008 5:43 pm

if anyone thinks DT overachieved with the talent at SL, then it should be fair to say that KA underachieved with the talent at Punahou? just a thought……but if the shoe fits…

  109. Bulla June 29, 2008 5:44 pm

    Koakane,

no more information on the linemen from Friday night on the Wessai? hmmmmm, maybe we’ll have to ask Pride for his analysis? just asking….

  110. Barry Markowitz June 29, 2008 5:48 pm

Crusader for Life, I respect your differing opinion and the way you expressed it, in a polite respectful manner. You are right, as far as me not being immersed in the loop at St. Louis…but I would disagree with the validity of a Sports Hawaii blog quote as a gospel fact. Hey Doris Sullivan are you out there? What has been your experience with Tengan? Was he proactive in helping the kids to secure college opportunities? How do the Div 1 coaches react to him?

  111. Jason June 29, 2008 6:34 pm

    Re-How to stop Florida’s offense

Looking at how Auburn handled Tebow and company in the swamp last year, holding the Florida offense to less than 350 yards and 17 points in handling the home team it’s first loss in 17 games, it dawned on me what the Auburn coached said that his safeties are disguised as linebackers, which makes perfect sense of what I remember Coach Mack mentioning that he has to recruit safeties to play linebacker spots, too in defending the wide spread offenses.

And skimming the rosters of the Auburn and Florida teams I can see that the SEC theory of defending the run and shoot is to have the defensive line neutralizing the line of scrimmage, the back seven speed players linebackers and defensive backfield yielding yards but the key strategy of not allowing for the big play is the key to the defensive teams goals. And this is what (I believe) successful SEC teams do in defending the run and shoot offense. Looking at the rosters of both teams, Auburn and Florida the linebackers are indeed the size and mode of safeties. Take note most of the linebackers are in the 6’0″-6’1″ and 210-220 lbs. sizes. Their are a few that are bigger, but most are in the size and speed of safeties.

For when Coach Mack opens camp, I wonder if he experiments with the idea of having a few of his current safeties practicing at one of the outside linebacker spots. Insulating against the long play he has to have his fastest players in the game, with *three safeties* in the defensive lineup (somehow) in some defensive packages as one of the keys of countering the Florida offense.

Every gamble and blitz in this game is important. And this is key that Hawaii guesses right. If the FS, SS or DB blitz our linebackers have to drop back into coverage and defend against the pass. Adam and Sol do well in this phase of defending the pass then the defensive team can take more liberties of blitzing. Adam and Sol defend against the Florida’s teams swing passes to the running back is a big key. But the biggest key is stopping Tebow from running. Last year he ran for 23 touchdowns.

Their offensive line is huge. Maybe across the line averaging 6’5″ and 300. If somehow the front four can get into their backfield would take a lot of pressure off the linebackers. In this game, I would like to see Blaze lined up at DE, mainly for pass rushing.

As one of the precedences for this game I would tell my players no thrash talking as in don’t do anything to incite the other team. Hawaii as under dogs (I’m guessing probably -24 pts) don’t do anything to boost the other team’s fans and players.

As a unit, as in any successful defensive team minimizing mistakes, not missing tackles and stopping the receiver after catches are big keys to this game.

Cohesively if the the defensive team do all their assignments we might surprise a few people.

As a side note, it really makes perfect sense that in the future Coach Mack recruits the type of athletes fit in the modes of the SEC theory of your linebackers are like big safeties, and your big fast linebackers bulk up to be DE. Just speculating here, but maybe the wave of the future in not having the big prototype NFL size linebacker on your roster, but the super fast safeties bulking up to linebackers that can defend the prevalent run and shoot offenses we are seeing more of in colleges. This makes perfect sense. And musing and reflecting, I can see, now, how Coach Mack we’ll be very selective in the types of athletes he wants at the defensive positions.

Very well presented and written post, arlis. Many very cogent points made. I can’t wait for the Swamp.

…. Now I would send Abe a black XXXL collar shirt if I can figure out how to get SteveM to sell me one.

Sorry Barry, the black Bonafide Tsai-ko polo shirts from me are not sold…they are awarded. However, shirts handled by James are the best route to purchase a Tsai-ko shirt in larger sizes.

I suppose I should explain the polo shirts … ST knew I was giving them out but I never told him why. At this point, the men’s shirts given by me (with Addahknowjoe) are gifts to Tsai-kos of distinction. These are the ones who where instrumental in developing the “character” of the blog in it’s first crucial formative year. Later Tsai-kos include those whose unshelfish actions on behalf of the Tsai-kos contributed to its growth and development.

Shirts first went out to ST and those who first inspired the Tsai-ko caricature. However, I cannot find relatively inexpensive polo shirts larger than XXL so the following notable Tsai-ko’s do not have polo shirts yet:

    Addahknowjoe
    Bulla
    Da Punchbowl Kid
    prideperiod
    Robert Kekaula

So unless they can supply suitable size black polo shirt, they will not have one at the Blog Party. Polo shirts will also be made at the specific request of ST.

There is a reason or two why I feel UH can win at the Swamp. I won’t say what they are, but I will say that the UH coaches are very akami because of what they do say and what they don’t say about our game with Florida.

  120. Da Punchbowl Kid June 29, 2008 8:12 pm

    “marlis” I meant… 😳

  121. FloridaTed June 29, 2008 8:14 pm

    Marlis,

I really like your speculations, as good as an experienced stock broker. I can see your scenarios unfold very easily and I hope you’re right. We definately have the personnel this year for this kind of defense. If it works against the SEC, you know it’ll work like a breeze against the WAC. Man, I can’t wait to see what we’ve got. We have lock down types of DB’s this season, so the safeties can take a lot more chances. Woootaaah. Good night gang, gotta go work early.

Hi Barry…I heard you calling my name…

Here was my post on Wes’ blog.

“I’d like to bid a fond farewell to Delbert but I know Ill be seeing him on campus for years to come. Thank you for all your help not only with the athletes at Saint Louis, but for giving my son the opportunity to develop as a player and more importantly as an individual. He is a better person because of you Coach!”

Lets give the man the respect he deserves for 25 years with the young men of Saint Louis and privacy for making his own decision. He knows his reason, maybe Ulima and the President of Saint Louis but everything else is just conjecture.

  137. Pauoa Boy June 29, 2008 9:23 pm

marlis, very well put. I agree that Coach Mack’s philosophy to get speed on the field on defense is the way to go. The key to our defense being Top 25 is going to start in the trenches with the D-Line. They have to and must wreak havoc in order for our D to be solid. I believe they will be key in determining how our D will handle Florida and everybody else we play. We already know Adam and Sol can hold it down at LB, and bruddah Blaze straight up just kills people. Plus we are deep with R.J., Brashton, Tyson, etc.. We also have a pretty experienced secondary and a lot more talented guys than ever before. I believe once the JC guys show up will be a bigger boost to the secondary with there speed as most are in the 4.3 range in the 40. But without the line making plays and holding down the fort, we’ll be in for a long day. I have faith that the way our boys have been working out over the offseason and with the lost of the Sugar Bowl still with that bitter taste in their mouths, they are hungry and ready to rumble. I also believe that this year our D will be Top 25 caliber barring any significant injuries. We all know the D is going to carry us until the O comes around. But like all of you I have faith and believe we are still the team to beat in the WAC. Most peeps have written us off as finishing no higher than 4th in the WAC and lucky to even get a bowl game this year, but to me das “unko”! Guess what we are still WAC Champions. I believe in our boys and Coach Mack that we are heading in the right direction and can compete with anybody, anywhere, anytime, anyplace! I believe our team can be consistent Top 25 in years to come with the changes that have happened. I don’t know about you but I bleed Warrior Green Blood and can’t wait until kickoff when we kick everybody’s arses! B-ull C-rap S-ystem here we come again! GO WARRIORS!!!

  144. Jason June 29, 2008 10:03 pm

I forgot to ask this earlier, I know we have quite a few Tsaiko military members:

I have a friend from church who recently graduated from high school. He was thinking of joining the Army Reserve, but I told him to talk to one of our uncles in church, who is in the Navy. in addition to the advice and info that he is giving my friend, I also have my bro-in-law (Air Force) counseling him too. If any of the Tsaikos currently in the other military branches would like to help my friend out with some counseling, I’d appreciate it; in particular, we addressed the need for advanced education (study now or later?), rank advancement, job types, and benefits. Please e-mail me at jnagaoka (at) hawaii.rr.com with a phone number and times available or an e-mail address, and I can pass it on to my friend. Mahalo!

  145. Da Punchbowl Kid June 29, 2008 10:20 pm

    Stretch,
I’m sure others have expressed this, but thank you so very much for all the hard work and support you and others donated to our blog community. Your giving nature and devotion to others here are greatly appreciated. 🙂

  146. Pauoa Boy June 29, 2008 10:24 pm

Jason, has your friend sat down with any of the recruiters at all? The best thing for him to do is to talk to each recruiter from each branch of service. I encouraged this alot when I was recruiting for the Marine Corps. The reason is so you can honestly tell who is feeding you BS and who is actually telling the truth. I would be willing to sit and talk with your friend and actually go with him to talk to the recruiters when I get back next week. I’ve been in the recruiting bizz the last 3 years so I would know first hand who the sweet talkers are right off the bat. Don’t worry I won’t be trying no jedi mind tricks to influence him as I am totally done with that aspect of my military career and want to stay far from ever doing it again. I would like to help him though and for my own personal fix see what they have to say.

  147. Pauoa Boy June 29, 2008 10:29 pm

Stretch – I second what DPK said. Unreal talent to make those mugs and stuffs. I know it takes time as I’ve heard you mention before it’s a pain. Plus those UA decals are mean. I dunno how many times people ask me where they can get some. Good stuffs, maybe could be a secondary career make more money.

  148. Pauoa Boy June 29, 2008 10:31 pm

Anyway catch you guys in the a.m. before my head hits the keyboard again from dozing off…

  149. Jason June 29, 2008 10:43 pm

Pauoa Boy: I think he saw an Army recruiter. My friend is smart, but sometimes he acts like a little kid, so I figure get the straight facts from people in each branch that I trust, not some unknown recruiter with his “jedi mind tricks” cause my friend might get fixated on something and make a bad decision.

I’ll let him know about your offer to sit and talk, and get back to you. Thanks for the help; I want to make sure he makes a well-informed decision.

  150. JaM June 29, 2008 10:49 pm

    Good evening to all…

Marlis and Pauoa Boy: Great points..from the info gleaned from the UWs it looks like there will be cohesiveness as a team come this fall.

SteveM: Sorry ..didn’t know that the black shirts were awarded…I guess I put both feet in my mouth at the last Karaoke call!

PPV Discount for season ticket holders..I did email JD regarding this issue. He did say that as it stands now only ticket holders on record will be entitled to order at the discount. I did inform him about how LizK picked up my tickets so that we could sit together as a group which now precludes me from the PPV deal. He has stated that he has asked J. Lee to look into this and possibly have tickets transferred to my name with LizK permission.

Yesterday I saw a couple of guys at the Speed and Quickness camp. I didn’t recognize them from the glance.(one with kind of long hair).aside from the fact I do have poor eyesight with my monovision lens.

    Blog Bash ..can’t wait!!

Anybody know if the Heather McMackin Clinic is confirmed for the 19th of August? need to book a flight and want to be sure to be back before then.

    Go Warriors!

  151. Jason June 29, 2008 10:58 pm

JaM: It should be, but if you want to double-check, call the Football Office at 956-6508.

  152. Jason June 29, 2008 11:04 pm

I forgot to mention this earlier too: It was refreshing to look at the PDF that UH released with the ticket prices for 2008 football, and see the breakdown of what sections are available for what group. I had heard of UH sideline tickets for $77, but didn’t know what sections that corresponded to. And I had heard that students could bring guests, but didn’t know how much that set cost.

  153. not far away anymore June 29, 2008 11:14 pm

    Jason,
If your friend is serious about joining the military, I would also encourage your friend to talk to recruiters from each of the five services before making any decisions. The recruiters are familiar with the current entry requirements for their service. For example: weight, ASVAB scores, medical history, criminal history, benefits, etc. From your post it looks like your friend is looking to join the Reserves. Only a recruiter can tell you whether there is a need for reservists in this geographical area. Is he considering active duty as well? I can speak fairly

  154. not far away anymore June 29, 2008 11:17 pm

I meant to say that I can speak fairly intelligently on active duty service in the Coast Guard, but my knowledge of Reserve issues is more limited. The blog decided to send my post before I was ready. I’d be happy to talk to you friend if he is interested though.

  155. Kekoa June 29, 2008 11:22 pm

Jason ~ Pauoa Boy is a Marine Recruiter, or just completed an assignment as one. I believe that he is going back in to his military specialty at his new assignment in San Diego. Check with him for Marine Corps opportunities.

BG has been recently retired, so he is more up to speed with the Army recruitment program.

My opinion is strictly from my point of view, not the Army’s. I never would advise any young man to choose anything he does not feel completely confident in doing. There are many opportunities in all the branches. They are not quite the same, but they are all put in a written contract, so they are not just promises, or a “bait and switch” deal.

Main thing is that he continues doing what you are encouraging him to do Jason. Allow him to research all of the branches of service and then decide. As we used to say, back in the day, when in doubt, check it out!

  157. Jason June 29, 2008 11:29 pm

Thanks for the advice! I think he was considering the Reserves just cause that’s what the recruiter talked about; I’m not sure he’s thinking this through completely. So that’s why I wanted to get some other people talking to him too. I’ll tell him about visiting all the other recruiters too, but I don’t want him to go over to the recruitment center and hear some spiel from a recruiter who is desperate to meet his quota.

  158. SteveM June 29, 2008 11:31 pm

Stretch has put out a few more bits of info regarding the bash. We have hit critical mass, and he has instituted a wait list. We were limited to the number of seats to begin with, and are trying to play the hand we were dealt. Next time we will know to handle things strictly our own way.

We are dealing with a menu that is basically centered on heavy Pu pu’s. Not really our choice, but we go with what we can afford without our folks having to pay much to enjoy each other’s company. Next time we know we do better when we prepare the food ourselves.

The beer will flow freely thanks to Budweizer. Those who would prefer a brand of their own are welcome to bring it in. Those who want just water or juice, no problem we wll provide that free of course.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Jason-
27 yrs and counting in the Air Force. Have your friend look into the new GI Bill that President Bush is about to sign. It’s a great deal. My advice for visiting the recruiters is to get a guaranteed job.

RE: Florida. Everyone has them as their preseason number 1 but I’d put them at 3 or 4 behind Ohio St., Georgia, and maybe USC. They are going to want to run, and then run some more on us. Eight guys in the box? Hopefully a couple good licks on Tebow will have him asking Coach Meyer to send in some pass plays.

  171. not far away anymore June 30, 2008 12:51 am

    Jason,
I sent you an e-mail. If your friend wants to know more about the Coast Guard, feel free to have him e-mail me. I don’t think that he would be subjected to any “jedi mind tricks” from the Coast Guard recruiters in Pearlridge. I’m pretty sure that they don’t have too much of a problem meeting their quotas in an island community that is so dependent on the ocean. The Coast Guard is also by far the smallest service so we have much fewer recruits. The next smallest service (U.S. Marine Corps) has more than 4 times the number of people. Until recently there were more people in the New York City Police Department than in the entire U.S. Coast Guard.
