On the mend

cb

Colt Brennan is back in Hawaii for the weekend. He is a volunteer coach at tomorrow’s Barefoot League clinic at Aloha Stadium.

He appears thin, although he said he weighs more than 200 pounds, and has a slight scar on his left cheek, a result of last November’s horrific two-car accident on the Big Island. He also has scars from the surgery to repair a broken left collar bone.

Other than that, he said he feels fine, and has resumed training.

Safety Darryl McBride and running back Jordan Monico are both moving to linebacker for spring training. McBride, who is 6-2 and 207, will give the Warriors added quickness on the outside. Monico, the best special-teams tackler, will be a physical middle linebacker.

If there’s good news about Colt it will just make my day.

  9. LizKauai m/ February 11, 2011 8:23 am

BTW, I had a lovely evening with two lovely ladies from the Ashburn area. One of them brought me an early Ayyam-i-Ha present… a reusable Redskins shopping bag with some nice souvenirs, including a pic of CB5 (needs an autograph) and a piece of the old jumbotron at FedEx field. WOW!
    I love football peeps… HTTR~!

Thursday was Colt Brennan’s first trip back to the islands since being discharged from Queens Medical Center in late November.
He’s in town to serve as an instructor at a youth football clinic this weekend.

Love to Colt, Shakti and Theresa…

Wow! First 3 in the clubhouse were Tsaikettes! Well, we know who’s driving the ship this morning. Way to roll Sistahs!

    Oh yeah…Aloha Friday erryone!

  14. BG February 11, 2011 8:39 am

Great fix to shoring up the linebackers and getting some players deserved opportunities. Haven’t seen much of Darryl, but can’t help but notice Jordan on special teams. He was the “special” in special teams.

  15. RedZone February 11, 2011 8:45 am

    Is it Ryan”s daddy?

Good to see Jordan getting a shot at lb.

  16. cheepono February 11, 2011 8:47 am

why would we move one of our “better” safeties (where it’s relatively thin right now) to a super crowded position at LB?

  17. RedZone February 11, 2011 8:51 am

Ryan’s daddy would be a huge get.

  18. Slugger February 11, 2011 9:00 am

Oh, yeah, I heard about the clinic this weekend with all of the FB stars. Mahalo to Colt and the others who will be here for the clinic with the youngsters.

I’ve been noticing Darryl McBride over the past year and he’s gonna be a great one on the line. He communicates a lot which means he’s seeing the formations on the other side. He was at the softball game last night.

  19. J-Dog February 11, 2011 9:09 am

wow, I thought McBride was set to compete for the vacant safety positions. Is the move to LB a permanent move? Take a look at the recruiting by position for 2011. UH has by far the most LB recruits of the WAC schools and I think it’s been that way since coach mack took over.

  20. Kekoa February 11, 2011 9:24 am

Hold your horses!…Colt’s in town! Check your guns at the door, and mosey on up to the Barefoot bar.

    Okay, almost top Twennny…

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid February 11, 2011 9:27 am

Nice move for McBride and Monico. We already know that Monico is jes’ a tacklin’ machine!

  25. LizKauai m/ February 11, 2011 9:29 am

DPK- you were proxied in at #7. No worries 😆

  26. Bulla February 11, 2011 9:36 am

    good morning Tsaikos,

a BIG shout out to DPK, he looked good when i was talking to him on my phone the other day, but then again, everyone looks good on my phone, haha.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Happy Friday!

Softball and volleyball tonight! Does it get any better? 😀

  28. Bowwar February 11, 2011 9:42 am

Not sure about the McBride move, but the coaches know their players best…Like most, I think we’re very thin at Safety, where we need fast and physical players. We didn’t do much in recruiting to replace our Safeties, so I hope our returnees are strong enough to cover the last line of defense.

I hope its good news for Colt…He needs some for a change…

  29. d1島 February 11, 2011 9:50 am

I want a picture of Stephen hugging Colt for LizK! 😆

  30. al February 11, 2011 10:11 am

d1…perhaps a better picture for lizk would be stephen taking a photo of slugger hugging colt…?

  31. James February 11, 2011 10:17 am

Good move shifting Jordan Monico to the middle linebacker position. He is is an impact player. Instead of seeing him make an impact only for few seconds tackling guys on kick offs, we are going to see him in action more of the time sacking QBs, stopping the runners and breaking passes to receivers ala Jeff Ulbrich. He is going to be in the middle of the action. If he is anything like his dad Mario Monico who terrorized opposing teams with his bat in baseball, he is not going to disappoint Warrior fans. The Monicos’ stand for excellence in UH sports. Jordan Monico from his stellar performance last season on special teams is going to keep that tradition alive. Can’t wait to see him in action next season.

  32. BigIslandkurt February 11, 2011 10:19 am

Mack always said that safeties could be come linebackers…..linebackers could be come DE’s…..DE’s could become DT’s, etc etc etc. SPEED is the name of the game with Mack/Aranda’s defense. Miami Stylee. I got absolutely no problem with this bradduh moving to LB.

    BIK

We will be in attendance today again to continue to accept applications and field any questions potential boosters may have.

1st Game today: versus UC DAVIS at 5:00pm

    Charles Clay:

how many years will he have to play at UH? 3 for 3 or less?

  44. Derek February 11, 2011 11:46 am

I love the way the Wahine swing the bat. They certainly don’t get cheated at the place. They take their swings and their cuts like every good pitch looks like a tomato. Did you see the cuts by Enrique, Robinson, Duhaylongosd-Kaleimamahu, and Zamora took? Man, if they make contact it’s bye bye baby. Iwata’s HR was a line drive, a frozen rope, hit so hard that it never dove, but kept going on a line until it went outta there. Gonzalez and Majam’s HRs were bombs, easily could have gone out 250 ft. Rodriguez struggled both at the plate and in the field. Two hits went over her head, one for a triple, the other went for a double and the runner was tagged at third trying for a triple by a great pickup and throw by Iwata. Rodriguez is too good a player and will play better today.

You can see the Wahine have been working in the weight room very hard. You can see the biceps bulging when they are at the place.

  45. madeinhawaii February 11, 2011 11:48 am

If Charles Clay did walk on.. he red shirted in 2009… played in 2010..so he’d have to sit out at least a year… and that would leave him 2 for 2.

  46. madeinhawaii February 11, 2011 11:51 am

Charles Clay was the only player from Hawaii on SMU’s roster in 2010..

Prep: Was named First Team Big Island Interscholastic Federation in football and track… Two-year letter winner in football at Hilo HS… Also lettered in track.

Personal: Parents are Charles and Jelena Clay… Has one sibling, Dylan.

  47. A-House February 11, 2011 11:55 am

bighilo is one very proud tsaiko!

    A-House,

    No mo softball next weekend.

The Wahine will depart for two sets of mainland tournaments after this weekend. They will have a single game against Texas State on Monday, Feb 14th, but after that the next home game for the Wahine will not be until Friday, March 4th.

  49. Bryson February 11, 2011 12:05 pm

    I wonder if it’s the same Dylan Clay that’s a MMA fighter…

  50. Derek February 11, 2011 12:06 pm

Sad to hear about the passing of Chuck Tanner, 82. He managed the Hawaii Islanders to some of their greatest seasons ever. Some of the players he managed were Doug Griffin, Marty Perez, John Werhas, Rich Barry, Jim Coates, and Tomas Silverio. They were great times at the old Honolulu Stadium where things were so pure and the vendor would walk in the stands and say, “peanuts, popcorn, coke” in his raspy voice. What a great guy. Those were the days my friend.

I still think they should build a 40 to 45 thousand stadium at that place. Turning it into a park was not a good idea. Do you see a lot of people at the park every day? No?

Like Mee Gee, J Rod just needs to grow into her new position. Sarah pulls with a lot of power. Kind of like JRod. Jessica is a beast. Look at her shoulders and arms. And that leap to snatch the ball out of the air was big time.

  53. jm2375 February 11, 2011 12:13 pm

Mr. A-house – only get baseball next weekend. ❗ Softball team is in Lost Wages next weekend, mvb at UCLA & Irvine and mbb BracketBuster game at UCDavis. Wahine will be home for a much needed rest after the road trip from hell (Reno-Las Cruces-Ruston). So glad there’s only 1 more year of this nonsense.

  54. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2011 12:13 pm

Charles Clay is not currently enrolled at UH, so, no, he is not on team. Yet.

  55. BG February 11, 2011 12:15 pm

    Pomai

Are you folks doing “Dollars for Dingers” collections after every HR? With admission free, fans were very willing to chip in. Just gotta have big signs (waterproof!) and big containers. Ask and they will give.

  56. RedZone February 11, 2011 12:15 pm

    ST what happened at 10?

  57. Derek February 11, 2011 12:16 pm

It will be very interesting to see who will be playing safety and what the depth chart will look like. Maybe McBride is just an experiment and he might move back to safety later. At any rate, some people will have to step up to replace Spencer Smith and Mana Silva. Richard Torres has started at safety last year. Others in the mix are Jordon Gomes, new recruit Bryan Clay, Leroy Lutu, and maybe John Hardy-Tuliau will move to safety. I don’t want to miss somebody because there are a lot of defensive backs in the mix and they all have a chance to step up and seize the moment. Good luck to all of them. They are all Warriors. Competition is the name of the game. We need playmakers.

  58. RedZone February 11, 2011 12:19 pm

  60. RedZone February 11, 2011 12:31 pm

Bo Belinsky pitched a no hitter at the palace. I am one of the few who can say I got to see Aloha Stadium in its baseball configuration.

  61. madeinhawaii February 11, 2011 12:35 pm

I watched the Islanders play at Aloha… it was weird… 5000 spectators in a house that holds 50K… The stadium was new then… it had just displaced all of my friends from the low-income housing apartments that used to be there.

  62. LizKauai m/ February 11, 2011 12:37 pm

Hi- ST… did you give Colt my hug???

  63. madeinhawaii February 11, 2011 12:37 pm

I’m not worried about next season’s defense… it’s the QB to receiver connection that I’m more concerned about. I think we have a good number of O-linemen competing for playing time so that should make for a solid O-line. But the connection between QB and receiver usually takes considerable time and repetition to develop.

  64. papajoe2 February 11, 2011 12:52 pm

I too saw the Islanders and coach Tanner at both the Honolulu Stadium and Aloha Stadium. RIP Coach Tanner. Yup, those were the days.

  65. d1島 February 11, 2011 12:55 pm

    Aloha Chuck Tanner.

He and Jack Quinn formed a great braintrust that had the town buzzing. Much success came from Quinn’s proclivity for signing veterans to “outright” contracts rather than relying on farm players. That gave Tanner something to build from.

  66. d1島 February 11, 2011 12:56 pm

…went to one or two Islander games at Aloha Stadium.

    Just wasn’t the same. 🙁

My uncle took me to Islander baseball games every friday & saturday night for many years. Never caught a foul ball, but my mom only went to one game and while crocheting, got hit by a line drive to her shoulder and with her quick reflex, she held onto the ball. I recall ushers coming to take her away to see if she was alright, I didn’t mind, got my first foul ball, thanks mom.
Great memories at the old termite palace and going to Longs Drugs before game to pickup 5 candy bars for 19 cents

  80. Guy in the office February 11, 2011 1:18 pm

For UH basketball fans and recruiting junkies, a story on Dayton Morinaga’s web site:
The Hawaii basketball team is in the running for an elite European point guard.
Andrej Pajovic, a former starting point guard on one of Montenegro’s junior national teams, has Hawaii high on his list of colleges for next season.

  81. BigIslandkurt February 11, 2011 1:28 pm

I remember Charles Clay from HIlo high. This boy got a good upside. Good head on his shoulders and god given speed. But that is what I remember him most from — track, not football. Good luck to him if he does transfer. I’m sure teammate Loefler will be ecstatic.

  82. Slugger February 11, 2011 1:32 pm

Aloha Chuck Tanner. I went to many Islanders baseball games when I was younger since we lived just down the street.

No way can a stadium be built again in the old Termite Palace spot. You’d have to tear down my residence and I don’t think I’d like that.

More gardening and then off to campus…

    RE: #50
Derek — sounds like we sat in the same stands in the Islander era. I used to sit above the 3rd line. Johnny Werhas was a favorite of mine, along with center fielder Rod Gaspar.

Got my only foul ball at Aloha stadium. A frozen rope foul that hit below the seat next to me. No, I didn’t catch it, but dad and I were the only people within 10 rows. I think attendance dropped to around 500 at Aloha stadium.

I felt rich, more than enough in those days.

  90. SteveM February 11, 2011 2:06 pm

Chopsueyboy — small world. No doubt we were at some of the same games and probably sitting within 20 feet from each other. 🙂 How many rows did the sideline bleachers have–around 35?

Remember Tommy Lasorda when he was a AAA manager? Colorful guy and the fans used to jeer him and throw bags of chips and stuff. He would pick up the unopened ones and put it in pockets… 🙂

  91. chopsueyboy February 11, 2011 2:23 pm

    Did Tommy L manage Spokane?
I used to hang over the chain link fence before games collecting autographs for my baseball.

  92. Derek February 11, 2011 2:25 pm

Steve M. – my friends and I always sat by the 3rd base stands right above where John Werhas was around 15 rows up. We always walked to the stadium because we were living on Waiaka Road (where the Contessa is) and we would always buy discounted tickets because every game would be a promotion, such as National Guard nite or something like that. Game tickets were about $2 bucks if I remember on those promotions. In those days, we didn’t have a lot of money but the dollar went a long way compared to today. For UH games, we always sat in the Diamond Head end zone, just below the big clock.

  93. kokane™ February 11, 2011 2:26 pm

Derek and chopsueyboy — interesting to think that we sat within feet of each other back then…and now, 35+ years later we “meet” here on the blog. There are probably more.

My greatest shock was when piecing together clues, I learned that Al was my classmate…. and that was 40 years. 😯 Second shock was hawnstln who decided to tell me his real name one day. Third surprise was Rokko>/b>, one of those guys with a lot of alphabets and periods after his name, who figured my identity after a month….back in 2007.

OK, not going to the softball game – starting to pour in Kailua and Koolau mountain all covered in dark clouds – Manoa valley on the opposite side – plus Midori says there are really, really dark clouds hanging over her work place which is just outside of Manoa valley

so, I goin blame Koakane for the rain!!!

RE: Cash donations at softball games.

As it was done last year, accepting cash donations for the softball program must be coordinated and approved by UH administration.

We will explore this again this season. We will make announcements regarding this when they are available.

For now, all interested individuals may donate online to the UH Foundation at:

    https://www.uhfoundation.org/give/giving-gift.aspx?allocation=12095304&site=AKA

ALL monies received goes DIRECTLY to the Rainbow Wahine Softball program.

The Na Wahine Softball Booster Club is still taking applicants for the 2011 season now. Applications can be downloaded at http://www.nawahine.com. All membership fees and outright donations to the Na Wahine Softball Booster Club ALSO will go directly to the Rainbow Wahine Softball program.

#80 Anybody that rhymes with Savovic is okay with me!!!!!! I hope we can get a good player from Australia one of these days. Somebody like Andrew Gaze, who was a great player at Seton Hall under Carlesimo. We had a shot at Luc Longley, but he went to New Mexico. Patrick Mills, ex-Saint Mary’s was also a great player.

“Monster” Masch is a keeper. Everytime Masch gets a sack or a tackle the band should play the Monster Mash!!!!

The best Triple A team, the 1970 Spokane Indians that beat the Chuck Tanner led Hawaii Islanders for the PCL Champsionship. Did you know the Islanders drew over 462,000 fans that year? Amazing. The Spokane starting lineup looked like a major league team.
P – Doyle Alexander and Charlie Hough
C – Bob Stinson and Steve Sogge (ex-USC QB)
    1B – Tommy Hutton
    2B – Davey Lopes
    3B – Steve Garvey
    SS – Bobby Valentine
    LF – Tom Paciorerk
    CF – Bill Russell
    RF – Bill Buckner

The next year Ron “Penguin” Cey joined the team and Garvey moved to 1B and Cey became the 3B.

They had the best saimin stand in the left field corner of the old Honolulu Stadium…I remember being part of the UH marching band and doing the last half-time show on the field. Also, remember doing a half-time show in the pouring rain and leaving my shoe in the mud somewhere in the stadium. Our white pants weren’t white anymore. 🙁

Can’t remember who dissed the old Honolulu Stadium, but it had ALOT more class and character than Sam Boyd stadium where UNLV’s games are played. Now, if you’d like to call someplace a “pig pen.”….

Suggestion was made about a week ago to take a look at Frank Gansz Jr. as a candidate for the Warrior’s special teams job. Word on the street is that he may be a candidate for the same postition at SMU. It is rumored that Gansz is very unhappy with the way the UCLA head coach treated Norm Chow several weeks ago and wants out of Westwood.

I believe I was the one who “dissed” the termite palace.

In the early 60s I was part of the YM-YWCA group of students, some 3-400 strong who would regularly go to watch UH. Then, the wooden “seats” were grey in color, sagging, twisted, cracked, etc.

Perhaps we saw you in the “mud” with the Marching band whose white shoes and pants were brown when your performance was done. Just like the game with Oregon where our kick-off receiver left the ball in the end zone and recovered for a TD – he just walked away and we were yelling for him to pick up the ball. So many mud bathes cannot remember them all.

After returning from the service, the mud was still there!

    CORNERBACKS

    11. Marcus Umu, Fr.
    12. Bryan Clay, Fr.
    13. Mike Sellers, Fr.
    14. Kendrick Van Ackeren

Some guys might change positions. McBride, Hill, and Van Ackeren are also slated to practice at linebacker. Henderson can play WR or SL. The coaches will huddle and make decisions based on how the players do in the spring and in the fall. Freshmen might redshirt unless diamond in the rough like Hardy-Tuliau surfaces. Mike Wadsworth will return in 2012 after completing his church mission. He should be in the mix at safety or as a nickel back. Lots of potential in this group with speed and athleticism. We don’t have anybody running in the 4.3s, but we have some guys who can run in the 4.4s and 4.5s. Main thing they can be good cover guys and be solid tacklers. Let’s try to find somebody who is a big hitter. It will be very interesting to see who will be in the 3-deep depth chart.

Jeezy – I think there is probably more than one scholarship available due to the amount of recruits who are apparently greyshirting (e.g. Henderson, et.al.) and there are a couple who may not meet the academic requirements, so they may have to go the JC route or possibly hope for a greyshirt as well. Don’t be surprised if there are a few more players that are announced in the next few weeks.

Na Wahine had great games tonight. They proved it’s not the bats, that they can win games without homeruns and WOW! that last game against Texas State ~ hanging tough and pulled it out.

Na Wahine are the No. 1 seed tomorrow and will play at noon. Then we’ll have to see how it shakes out for the 2 pm & 4 pm games.

Great MVB game, too. Saw A-Joe, jm2375 & the Screechers.

mack has always tried to save a scholie until after the loi date.

it is a good practice to wait and see exactly what you may need and there’s always some quality guys who were left on the table.

it was a week long battle of offense versus defense in manoa. a battle between the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator, i guess aranda won out. it is a great pick up since we need someone who can step in to play right away. brandon leslie is a beast no doubt and should be blowing guys up coming across the middle. i think he becomes a fan favorite right away.

SteveM, al, Derek, Koakane, chopsueyboy & others,

You bring back such nostalgiac memories for me too at the Termite Palace. God Bless Chuck Tanner & those Islanders. Just loved the PCL. Remember when Winston LLenas narrowly lost out on the PCL Batting title (by percentage points) to Bobby Valentine? Man, those were the
days!! After the games, we sometimes moseyed over to play with some of the pinball machines at the Stadium Bowl-O-Drome.

  171. protector February 12, 2011 7:15 am

    Derek on # 143,

Thanks for the depth chart. I didn’t see Bubba Poueu-Luna listed. I was truly looking forward to see him play. Was that an oversight or did something happen to him that I don’t know abouit? I was pretty disappointed they red-shirted him in the past season, but the added year should help absorb the schemes, etc.

  174. Derek February 12, 2011 7:52 am

Protector, it’s an oversight. The UH roster showed Bubba as a slotback. A lot of these guys can play defensive back or receiver as they have played both in high school. Whatever the coaches decide and what they see in practices. Sometimes, people get switched because of neccesity, other times a position is loaded. QB David Graves has also played defensive back also. But I think he will stay at QB this year and see if he can make a quantum leap to compete with Shane Austin for the primary backup to Moniz.

  175. BG February 12, 2011 8:21 am

    Good morning all!

Loved listening to the game with Texas State last night! The picture of Iwata sliding home in the earlier game is classic. If she had slid “correctly” hooking away from the tag, she wouldn’t have been able to touch the plate and her foot would have been blocked off the plate by the catcher. To have Jessica AND Kelly both sophs is simply incredible! Add to that core for the next several years is the crop of excellent frosh. Watching Sharla behind the plate and at bat leaves a fan disbelieving she’s a true first year player. Looks to have an edge over Grimes as a hitter. No like bachi (throws salt over shoulder and make the sign of the cross) but she has all the potential for WAC FOY. AND, oh my, the bottom of the order came through in a pressure situation for the win. That has to be a confidence builder!

First base and 2b both look unsettled still, but you know Coolen will have things in order by the time conference play comes around.

  176. SteveM February 12, 2011 8:56 am

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  332. christian louboutin gold shoes March 3, 2011 12:02 am

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

(There are other ceiling fans worth considering out there, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the hampton bay vs the hunter line as well.)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Yet another thing to mention is that an online business administration training course is designed for college students to be able to without problems proceed to bachelors degree education. The 90 credit education meets the lower bachelor diploma requirements then when you earn your associate of arts in BA online, you will have access to up to date technologies in this field. Some reasons why students have to get their associate degree in business is because they’re interested in the field and want to receive the general training necessary in advance of jumping right into a bachelor education program. Thx for the tips you really provide as part of your blog.
