Tough break

Bryant Moniz will undergo surgery tomorrow for a broken right fibula.

He suffered the ankle injury on a scramble. Although the play was ruled a sack, it appeared to be a non-contact injury, with Moniz crumpling to the turf.

The usual recovery period is between four and six weeks. In the best-case scenario, there is a slim chance Moniz would be able to return for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, if the Warriors were to qualify .

    Morning, everyone!

Mahalo for everything, Moniz! Heal up!

    Get Better Bryant! First +1

  3. EastManoa November 13, 2011 4:06 am

BTW, John Hardy-Tuliau will be playing in the NFL in two years.

  4. Garret November 13, 2011 4:15 am

Bryant Moniz will be missed by the Warriors and it is sad that his home fans won’t get to see him play anymore. He took a lot of criticism from some fans but he did so much for the Warriors that was overlooked by his critics.

  5. Garret November 13, 2011 4:19 am

    105 UH

    119 NMSU

    Other opponents:

    32 Washington

  6. Garret November 13, 2011 4:26 am

I had thought that ST clarified less than a month ago that David Graves was the #2 QB and that was why he was coming in the games when Moniz went out. I am glad that Shane Austin got a chance to play, but that seemed to contradict what was written and what was given in playing time all season.

That was why I was glad that I saw in the article today that it was stated that Austin had thrown better over the past 2 weeks and that was why he went in for Moniz. The #3 QB normally only gets “mental reps” in a normal situation, but I guess UH has been splitting the limited reps for the #2 QB between Austin and Graves…and just showed the importance of performing well in those limited reps.

I thought that UH was going to say that Austin had gone in because he was a senior who had started a road game (SJSU) last year and had more game experience in road games. Instead, the clarification was that Austin had earned the job with those limited practice reps recently.

With full practice reps for Austin or Graves, they should get more comfortable in the offense quickly. UH cannot afford to split reps between them–get the #1 QB as comfortable as possible with the starting receivers for next week. The #2 will get more reps than before.

We know that playing Graves would be building for the future, but the coaches are understandably focused on winning now for many reasons.

  7. Garret November 13, 2011 4:28 am

Hardy-Tuilau made another huge play on special teams…he’s an example of a recruit that was overlooked by others that the UH coaching staff found. He contributed right away as a freshman, has made huge plays this year, and will be even better as his Warrior career goes on.

  8. Committed Road Warrior November 13, 2011 4:55 am

It’s always tough to see somebody end their collegiate career like that. Hope he gets better soon!

Somebody should have taken the remote away from whomever kept changing the channels.

Gosh! Looked at one point like s/he or they forgot what channel the UH game was on.

    Thank you!!!

  15. NYUH November 13, 2011 5:19 am

Thanks to Moniz for an inspiring story and a great career.

Hawaii has always had to rely on two QBs for a successful season. That the backups, with a senior QB, have such little experience is disappointing.

  16. 99club November 13, 2011 5:25 am

Mahalo, Mo. Take your time and let it heal properly.

  17. Bulla November 13, 2011 5:32 am

thank you mr. moniz for the memories, heal up and get better.

Warriors, all on you boys, what happens from here on out to the end of the season is upon you. Stand together as one team, one mind, one purpose, in one accord, play for each other and ignore everything else…….GO GET ‘EM.

  18. duffer November 13, 2011 5:38 am

MAHALO to Bryant Moniz! One heck of a WARRIOR!

Props to Kevin and Pomai! These two are dedicated Wahine softball boosters! Pomai for standing on the dugout filming in the dust and heat for two hours. Kevin for manning the “tent” selling shirts and giving out softballs. Make the Tsaikos proud.

  19. Wes'side Warrior November 13, 2011 5:41 am

Whether it’s Austin, Graves, or whomever else, we just gotta keep it together and work through this. Same with our receivers, O-Line, everyone. From the beginning of the season to next week, we may have all new starters. All kinds of adversity. But that’s why they are called “Warriors”!

    Finish strong, Warriors!

    Believe and Be the Light!

  20. hossana November 13, 2011 5:43 am

I still can’t and couldn’t believe the criticism Moniz took after the Utah State game and periodically other games also calling for a chg. of QB. He just didn’t have the line blocking for him. Injuries, I repeat, injuries did not contribute to Hawaii losing in any of their games esp. the Utah State and Nevada games. On the contrary, Hawaii was and has been outcoached in every phase of the game and its a mockery that so much praise has been heaped on Aranda and the offensive coordinator when teams make their adjustments and just shuts down Hawaii…..I still can’t get over last wk. when Mack makes an asinine comment that they weren’t prepared for the second string QB…Hawaii is up by 21 pts. and Utah State loses their starting QB and Mack said they were not prepared or couldn’t adjust to their new QB….Moniz epitomized a TRUE WARRIOR…TOUGH, RESILIENT, TREMENDOUS CHARACTER but he just didn’t have the line support and there was little he could do. Unfortunately, I cannot see Hawaii making it to a Bowl Game and even if they did, it would be a travesty and embarrassment. Can you imagine if Houston was to play Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl? I shudder to think about the outcome. You can criticize me for being negative but I have been going to UH games since the days of Bobby Ahu back in the late ’60’s till now…except, I admit, missing many games under the V. A. era. Well, season is not over but the coaches better get their act together or Hawaii should just clean house and bring in a new staff that has the experience in coaching Div. 1.

  21. NYUH November 13, 2011 5:58 am

I thought the Oline was playing pretty good last night and the Warriors hung in there and made it an interesting game.

  22. kanolle November 13, 2011 6:03 am

Austin played okay. He stayed in the pocket, the protection was good and he made some great throws. His arm strength is questionable. His balls floats. The offense keeps throwing deep with no results.

  23. 808bowler November 13, 2011 6:13 am

Morning everyone. Eerie this year reminds me of the year greg alexander got hurt. That year we had a bunch of injuries too.

    Heal up wounded warriors.

  24. Bowwar November 13, 2011 6:13 am

We should be proud of the Warrior effort!! It was cold as hell in the stands but we cheered hard. The Mackay stadium is a mess & disgrace to the WAC. They had porta potties for the folks, as there are not enough bathrooms. My only consolation is taking money away from Nevada, as we beat the spread.

  25. Bowwar November 13, 2011 6:16 am

Our online played well & Austin did well under the circumstances…Iosepa’s fumble was a killer…

  26. Really? November 13, 2011 6:31 am

Over 500 yard total offenses, 35 first downs and 223 yards rushing for the Wolfpack. That’s getting ran over on defense. Everyone knew Nevada has a terrible secondary, this game was ll about the defense slowing down the Pack Pistol and like usual this year when they HAVE to make plays they don’t. That’s what happens when you have a puppet DC taking the heat for the guy who is really running the defense Greg “Grandpa Munster” McMuffin. But don’t worry he’ll find a way to blame the loss on the team’s reaction to Moniz’s injury soon enough. Oh, wait, I just read the Star Advertiser this morning and NEWSFLASH, he just did! Predictable, over his head and the most overpaid fraud in college football. That’s our homophobic, sickly looking, “gem” of a head coach. At 1.1 million dollars a year we could at least get a guy that looks like a football coach and leader. At least……….

  27. Hilo Moon November 13, 2011 6:36 am

  35. Stephen Tsai November 13, 2011 7:23 am

    Garret:

You are correct that usually the No. 3 guy only get mental reps.

But because Moniz was banged up, he was held out, allowing Graves and Austin to split reps.

  36. Shoko November 13, 2011 7:29 am

Tough loss, but everyone knew the Warriors were coming into this game as two TD underdogs. Anyway, still get chance for Hawaii Bowl. Just got to beat Fresno State.

Speedy recovery for Mo. I’m sure he’s heart broken his college career had to end this way.

Looks like Boise State has dropped out of the top ten in the Coaches Poll. Houston now ranked 10th in the poll just might achieve their BCS bowl dream. Stanford dropped to number nine.

Yep and interesting weekend of college football.

  37. Uniwarrior November 13, 2011 7:31 am

22: Kanolle there was a reason he was floating those balls. they worked on that this week in practice thinking that Bright with his height could take advantage of that kind of pass. Austin can bring it on the deep pass. Remember his hook ups with Pilares in the end zone against USC?

  38. warfan November 13, 2011 7:37 am

Garret (6) do you really believe what you read in the stories they spin in the paper? not always what is reality. that being said Austin is prepared. he is consistent at practices. maybe he did take it to a new level these past two weeks that is true. but he has always thrown at a high level and is a solid passer. i look forward to the next three games and the possibility of Austin leading the team to a bowl game and actual bowl victory. i believe.

  39. Wally November 13, 2011 7:39 am

Who cares about the sagarin rating this point. If this program it is going to compete on this level it’s not about the x’s and o’s, it’s about the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s. It is clear that we have some talent in certain positions but accross the board there are some major holes to fill. I don’t have an answer on what it’s going to take to get some quality talent to play football in paradise, but selling the program is getting harder each time we have a season like this. In the famous words of our Governor “if your going to be D1 then be D1”. The one all and be all in fixing this program is recruit better players, the way to do that is invest in your facilities, and hire coaches (who cares where their from) that can convince talent to come to the island and play. The minfdset of the AD is as if he was he CEO of a professional franchise you win by upgrading your product with the best of everything, if you can’t do that then you have no business being in the business of D1 football. This program better wake up, or simply get left behind and die a slow and painful death. You cannot produce revenue with losing no one is going to pay absorbant ticket prices to be associated with mediocrity, people want to associate with winners because it is simply human nature. Rise up or go to rest Warriors.

  42. Buffoman November 13, 2011 7:53 am

Do we have LBs in the wings as quick and fast as Brown? WE need that kind of speed to compliment a d-line like what we have.

    He will be missed.

Don’t be surprised to see a real feel good story for Shane Austin over the next three games. If he goes on to win three games….and a Bowl, this story would be of “Fendo” proportions. C’mon Shane. We rooting for you.

  50. Da Punchbowl Kid November 13, 2011 8:13 am

Moniz – the consumate Warrior. UH QB’s in recent history have come in such diverse packages, but they all had one thing in common: greatness. Add Bryant Moniz to that list of greats and remember him for the hard working, non-complaining, selfless leader he was. A great talent and a tremendous leader. He will be missed and remembered. Thank you Bryant Moniz!

Our next QB1 will be great because he will stand on the shoulders of giants like Rolovich, Chang, Brennan, Alexander and now, Moniz…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    FINISH!!!

  51. bigislandkurt November 13, 2011 8:14 am

The crazy thing about Mo’s injury is that it came with no one really hitting him. The way Mo played, I was almost certain that he would be the last person to get injured. Man, the football gods must be mad at us.

    BIK

  52. Da Punchbowl Kid November 13, 2011 8:17 am

If it weren’t for bad luck in the injury department, UH would have no luck at all. Prayers for all wounded Warriors, and those in the NFL.

  53. Wassup November 13, 2011 8:18 am

Injuries help to prove the point that you need depth to be successful. Give up-and-comers reps, don’t play favorites, and coach up everyone. When will we get it? Oh yea, recruiting is critical to create depth too.

On a side note, it is embarassing to get out-coached each week. Mack should have taken his very generous offer in these trying economic times. Looks like the UH has no choice but look elsewhere for a more economical contract.

  54. Kekoa November 13, 2011 8:20 am

Poho Mighty Mo. A twist of fate has made it so.

May healing powers make you better, as we all know how you earned your letter.

And as your season comes to a close, I hope your critics all get hosed!

Mahalo young Warrior for giving us so much to cheer for. You have earned your place in the UH record book.

  55. WarriorFan4Ever November 13, 2011 8:21 am

  56. expat November 13, 2011 8:22 am

That was a hard fought game against a better team. The guys battled to the end. Terrible news about Mo.

  57. expat November 13, 2011 8:29 am

It has been a little bit of a rough season. Still, things could be much worse. Oregon State is 2-8 with a loss to an FCS team and will likely end up 2-10. They have been successful recruiting in Hawaii over the past decade. Maybe that will change a bit.

  58. wafan November 13, 2011 8:29 am

    Happy birthday to PB!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  59. papajoe2 November 13, 2011 8:34 am

  60. Jin November 13, 2011 8:38 am

Thanks, to Mo for all of the good memories, he was a true warrior who had to run the team each week with no coaching help. Did you see Mac on the sidelines? Poor guy, he looked SO LOST not knowing what to do. On the other side of the field, Ault was taking charge coaching his offense and defense, he was always talking to (coaching) the entire squad.

    Good morning, gang!

Heal up well, Mo. Mahalo for your contributions to the team. Good luck in the future.

  63. Stretch November 13, 2011 8:48 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Heading back home after another road loss. I am 0-4 this season on road games. Maybe I should be stay home next year, I am sure the head coach will appreciate it if I do.

One thing about the backup QB this year. Graves took most of the game reps which I thought was being done to prepare for next season. We lose Moniz and Austin after the season so getting Graves ready was good. Only bad thing is that when Austin comes in a situation we need him, with lack of game time this season, it took a few series for him to get settled. Hopefully Austin will get comfortable again running the team.

  64. Old Diver November 13, 2011 8:50 am

ST stated in the past that Austin and Graves were co-number two’s. That was for public consumption. Game on the line, Austin. Mop up duty for game experience, Graves.

  65. Old Diver November 13, 2011 8:55 am

The best case at this point is for Austin to lead us to a bowl game with Graves getting a lot of practice time being the number two guy. Oh, and no more injuries.

  66. Wes'side Warrior November 13, 2011 9:03 am

Wow, Kekoa! What a poet… and I neva even know it!

  67. kalani November 13, 2011 9:17 am

    #63 Stretch

My thoughts as well…when you’re the #2, the coaches need to make sure you’re getting reps so you can step in with the game on the line and play at a high level. With Shane getting virtually no game time this season, I was concerned about this exact scenario occurring. With more game time earlier this season, I think Shane could have come in and won the game…he certainly looked great after the first few series. It may have cost us a W. Well, that’s water under the bridge now and Mack will have to live with that decision not to play Austin more earlier in the season. That being said I hope Shane knocks it out the park for the rest of the season.

  73. Derek November 13, 2011 9:29 am

We have to try to look to the future while we play the last 3 games of the season. Graves and Austin were bracketed at #2. Graves should receive extensive playing time to get well needed experience. Austin should play too for plays that are better suited for him. We you need some running, Graves is a better runner by far. Practice this week will be important and I hope Graves steps up because he might be our future for the next 2 years. He’s paid his dues and has done everything he has been asked to do, including playing safety last year.

On another note, what happend to Manti Teo? Didn’t see him yesterday.

  74. whitey November 13, 2011 9:29 am

i enjoyed watching the fb game last night because it was a typical college game. we lost, but da warriors played very well in spurts which can be corrected for the next game. some things will not be able to correct, but hopefully they will keep working as one and pick each other up.

Haven’t seen the dvr yet but guessing Mo was injured earlier and was manning up until the body just broke.

Losing Mo like this evokes the sad memory of Alexander the Greg’s injury.

I think American football as we know it will be replaced by something else sooner than later and for a variety of reasons.

Still coming to the next three games though.

Loving our Warriors and loving our fellow Tsai-kos.

Sterling Jackson is one of our best players & offensive weapon; we must find ways to get him in the game more–can we Coach Rolo? Can we use him as a H-back or have 2 RB’s in the backfield?

sum are good practice player and sum are good game players. to find the good practice player is a no brainer, but to find the game players means sometimes you have to take chances on them and not set your playing roster in stone or copy others. the last two weeks, we have been beaten by qb’s who were not starters, but boy can they play in game situations. of course, taking chances can also go the opposite way, but generally when watching college ball, more positives happen than negatives.

  85. Dan-O November 13, 2011 10:57 am

Sad thing is that Mac redshirted a ton of talented kids. If he gets fired, he’ll never get to use them on the field. In hind-sight, maybe not a good thing.

  86. el burro sabio November 13, 2011 10:58 am

    ST,

Van Ackeren showed up on the Game Participation list, is that correct or was that Waylon Lolotai who is also #52?

#87 Enshallah. All affairs of humans are subject to the Will of Ke Akua…

  91. Stretch November 13, 2011 11:51 am

That fake FG by Nevada caught everyone, including myself, by surprise. When the FG team ran on the field, it appeared as a standard attempt. I am pretty sure that during the 3rd down play, it was already decided to go for the fake if necessary. The players were informed and preparing for it but all eyes were on the field watching the 3rd down play. The UH coaches were not tipped off by a longer than usual team huddle or coaches talking to specific players. It is that kind of game management plays in advance that UH lacks. If UH was in the same situation, the call for a fake would have been made AFTER not converting on 3rd down. The other team would have picked up on something.

I am not only talking about only running fakes but calling unnecessary timeouts after not converting on key plays. Why do we have to call timeout to figure out if we are going for it on 4th down? The coaches should be talking during the 3rd down play in case we dont make it. There was a play this season that was under review. The call was against us so the offense had to go back on the field. Oooops, we didn’t think it might be over turned so we call time out AFTER ALL THE TIME SPENT REVIEWING THE PLAY to figure out what play to call.

I am not, and have not, been impressed with the current coaches game management. Hopefully the head coach will be better at it next season.

  92. Stretch November 13, 2011 11:54 am

90 – people better consult with Ke Akua before making promises. Unless it’s another excuse to use

    Thanks for the reminder, whitey.

    The WARRIORS were WINNERS yesterday!

For the first time in 22 years, the KIF Champs Kapaa Warriors will be representing Kauai vs Iolani.

  94. LizKauai (macbook) November 13, 2011 11:57 am

92- Ke Akua doesn’t take sides in football. He loves ALL his creatures… that is our example…

  95. kev-1 November 13, 2011 12:08 pm

Though critical of him at times, I am saddened that Moniz suffered such a serious injury. Get well soon!

ST says that they won’t add another QB for 2012, which makes sense because of their depth.

For 2013 . . . UH coaches need to go down to Aloha stadium next friday and watch #12 from Baldwin High. Saw him briefly against Farrington and really liked what I saw. He is tall, athletic and raw. Great potential. What you guys from Maui think?

  96. Stretch November 13, 2011 12:08 pm

Making promises has NOTHING to do with football or Ke Akua. It’s just someone who opens his mouth and can’t back it up. And before you say it’s people who are gambling, no I am NOT gambling.

  97. kev-1 November 13, 2011 12:08 pm

Thankn you for helping me lose so much money this season. Dream team my wazoo.

  99. WarriorFan4Ever November 13, 2011 12:16 pm

64 Old Diver & 67 kalani: so right you are. 73 Derek: Completely disagree unless you are throwing in the towel on this year. One leader is needed and Graves is certainly not yet ready. Let the running backs do the running. Best wishes to a speedy recovery Mo. Thank you for your dedication to the team.

  100. whitey November 13, 2011 12:19 pm

to get emotional during warrior fb is only natural, but somethings haven’t changed. one is tackling and the other is poor hands of the receivers. these are correctible, but will it change this season?? don’t know, but hope someone pays attention to these constant problems and trys to correct it. of course, some will say that the coaches have too many other problems and i will accept that answer.

  101. whitey November 13, 2011 12:28 pm

i am not sure, but i think most warrior practices have written instructions that each coach wnats to do. maybe in practice, run 3 or more consecutive plays without a huddle and see how the players react without having to depend on the coaching staff. the defensive coach is just guessing what plays the offense will run, relays the wrong scheme, and the defensive players get burned. i think sometimes it is better to let the defensive captain call the play cause their instincts know what is happening as each offensive play develops.

  102. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 13, 2011 12:31 pm

I too was wondering why Graves wasn’t put in. Maybe he is injured? Either that or Mack felt like Austin needed a shot after the story they ran in the paper about how thankful he is just to be on the team. He is very much a team player.

In any event, for someone who never got real game time experience he did pretty good.

I didn’t expect us to win this one so I’m not disappointed like the Utah St. loss etc.

As someone else stated yesterday, “the world” won.

  103. whitey November 13, 2011 12:40 pm

when the 3rd qtr started and da warriors were going to score, i thought ok, this is the game changer for them and yes it did change the game the wrong way.

  104. mililanimauka November 13, 2011 12:43 pm

  105. Hawaiianbod November 13, 2011 1:26 pm

  106. al November 13, 2011 1:31 pm

bringing in austin was a small kine surprise to me.

being that graves got the first call for mop up duty as well publicity as the back up.

austin settled in and did a good job considering the lack of pt and practice reps this year.

one mishandled fullback dive and a couple drop balls meant we were in the hole instead of digging out of it.

under typical circumstances i’d say he deserves the start next week. however, we have a penchant for being not normal.

so…i won’t be surprised if graves ends up starting on saturday as this would play right in to how this program is being managed.

  107. Oliva Heiserman November 13, 2011 1:31 pm

  109. WarriorAuntie November 13, 2011 1:57 pm

Well, if you played Graves, as published and promised in the depth chart he would have been able to get much needed real game experience. How is a back up (supposed #2 QB) player not getting real time play to perform and show his true talents when he is not allowed to play? You can’t bank an entire season on the Mighty MO! This is a lameduck coaching staff, as well as a coughed up season, based on poor coaching decisions. It made me sick to see the losses that were absolute wins, but choked on by bad play calls and coaching. Stop the injury excuses. The talent is there …just let it out! We also are suffering from a poorly prepped depth chart by not letting them get the field/game time that they should be getting. It is time to prepare for 2012 and let Graves get his time. Austin is good, but he is a 3 game guy and out. Let’s get whooped up and ready for next year by having a well versed, prepared, and real game time experiences for the young man Graves. And for all the “bowl” hopefuls…this season was set and ended a while ago by very poor coaching/judgement decisions from the top down.

  113. papajoe2 November 13, 2011 2:04 pm

I noticed in the second half that Darius Bright actually caught some passes. Never too late. We sure could use him now.

  114. Stretch November 13, 2011 2:06 pm

Next week could be the last time Mack faces Pat Hil. It appears both are on the hot seat, one or both will be out at the end of the season.

  115. Slugger November 13, 2011 2:09 pm

Should be interesting to watch how the guys do in practice this week.

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 13, 2011 2:11 pm

    #106,

I think its having a penchant for surprising people. But not like pulling off a fake punt for the score kind of good surprise. Quite the opposite unfortunately.

  117. WarriorAuntie November 13, 2011 2:31 pm

Now, on the season, I believe that the last 3 losses were absolutely winnable matches. 10/14 SJ State…oh please…cough..cough..choke. Same with Utah on 11/5. Yes Wash State and UNLV were doable, but they were tough. Still this was a sorrowful end to what should have been. Last night at the obnoxious Wolfpack arena this was just another example of poor decisions with what appears to be no long term plan on the part of the current coaching staff. All eggs can’t be put in one basket, but then blame these new hatchlings on your failures to prepare. Come On Man! You are the paid professionals. Get it and sooner rather than later.

    A few game highlights…

Gotta say that the Special Teams really stepped it up this game.

Don’t understand why some folks just keep digging to say something bad about the Warriors.

  119. Derek November 13, 2011 2:47 pm

As far as I can tell the Warriors have either 3 or 4 verbal recuits for next season. Three of them are Dustin Adams, Eddie Lackey, and Ikaika Woolsey. This is not good when a lot of teams already have 15 or even at least 20 players committed. None of the recruits who have committed do not seem to be big time impact players. Local recruiting seems to be bad so far.

  120. Kevin November 13, 2011 2:51 pm

Thanks again to Duffer and all the Maui folk we met yesterday that made us feel very welcomed!!! Was great to see so many parents and their kids excited to meet the Rainbow Wahine!!!

  121. Buffoman November 13, 2011 3:05 pm

I just cannot see Bright as a major offensive WR weapon. He just does not appear to run his routes hard all of the time, does not appear to like to go over the middle and when he does and passes are thrown his way, he has alligator arms.

If he’s still hurt and cannot run hard, take him and replace him with a healthy player who will run hard.

  122. madeinhawaii November 13, 2011 3:43 pm

What’s going to happen if Graves gets his playing time and he doesn’t pan out? Will all the David Graves Fans abandon him, too?

  123. madeinhawaii November 13, 2011 3:45 pm

Change their handles and log on as someone else and start to extol the virtues and talents of one of the other QBs?

  124. whitey November 13, 2011 3:47 pm

they say “practice makes perfect”, but i think correctly should be that “practice instills the discipline and patience to be very good, not perfect”. because of practice, routine passing, running, blocking, and tackling become second nature. if we are struggling or excelling in any of those areas, it reflects back on practice. i would hope that by this time of the season, those areas would be routine because of the amount of time spent on practice. Somehow, these routines are not routines.

Kevin & Pomai, along with Duffer, deserve a round of applause for their effort.

To support the WSB team as they normally do here on Oahu is already a good thing. To travel to Maui and be joined by Duffer to share the talent of this team was over the top!

Way to go guys! (…and you to whitey!)

  127. madeinhawaii November 13, 2011 3:56 pm

I hope Graves is that good. I hope he shines above the rest because that would be great for the team. BUT right now, whomever gives the team the best chance of winning has to be QB, not just the heir apparent because he needs practice. That’s what Spring and Summer are for.

  128. whitey November 13, 2011 4:04 pm

not looking too far ahead, but 2012 will be a most interesting year for da warriors qbs. the pool of talent is solid and unless there is truly an outstanding hs qb interested in da warriors, this should not be a priority in recruiting. we need more guys like kt, vm, zm, pf, ab, etc.

  129. growninhawaii November 13, 2011 4:05 pm

I am so sorry about your injury. Your surgery will be a success, you are in my thoughts and prayers and you will recover fast. Thanks for adding some civility and candor, instead of venting and frustration. We need more positive bloggers. I say, don’t write anything that you wouldn’t be proud to own if it was on the front page of the newspaper. Another way to say it may be, if you woudn’t feel right reading your post to the person’s parents, spouse, or other family. Bottom line, we all hurt, we all (well most) want the best for the Warriors, and that when some of us are done venting our frustration, we THEN realize that someone’s mother, brother, sister, wife is reading it too, and they are probably very hurt. You can’t get away from your deliberate actions by saying “That’s what we do on this blog.” or “No one is forcing them to read it.” Are you a force for make the family pono, or a force for its all about me? Some need to go back to 5th grade and re-read [if can read] the Hawaii history on ho’oponopono!

Does anyone know what happened during Warriors return flight home?

  135. WWF November 13, 2011 4:55 pm

95 – Kev-1 Baldwin QB is Keelan Ewaliko, still a Junior at Baldwin, but UH should be calling on him now and offering him. Dual threat QB.

  136. WarriorFan4Ever November 13, 2011 4:59 pm

    Cookie: what do you mean?

  137. Stephen Tsai November 13, 2011 5:13 pm

    Re: Fake.

I figured there was a possibility because the top two kickers were out with injuries. Also, there were two running plays to keep the ball in the middle of the field. The sack pushed the ball to the right hash. I asked McMackin after the game about the fake. He acknowledged that an unidentified player missed an assignment.

  138. Stephen Tsai November 13, 2011 5:14 pm

Graves and Austin get equal reps this week.

No announcement on starter until game time.

  139. Pomai November 13, 2011 5:15 pm

#76 – Liz – that’s the day that I quit watching or following. Football was meant to be a violent game and I wouldn’t like to see it changed too much from what it is now.

  140. Shoko November 13, 2011 5:21 pm

Maybe its time to go with a two-QB system. Based on the other teams defense, put the QB that has the strength that will take advantage of the opposing defense that is weak (i.e. pass defense or rush defense). You have one QB (Austin) that is more of a pocket passer and the other is a dual-threat (Graves) that can run the ball. That way, you have Graves that will get some game experience and Austin still gets his reps too. But then again, I think Coach Mack is more worried about qualifying for bowl eligibility at this point in the season. As such, he’ll probably go with a QB with more experience and knows the playbook.

  141. WarriorFan4Ever November 13, 2011 5:23 pm

Probably keeping the opposing team guessing…

  142. warfan November 13, 2011 5:27 pm

Shoko: if thats the case that qualifying for bowl eligibility is the priority (and it should be) then the obvious choice is Austin and he should get all the reps to be game ready. what are the coaches thinking?

  143. Pomai November 13, 2011 5:35 pm

#125 – justplaintiredofthehype – no hype if you check back over the last years comments you would see I myself thought Graves was the best QB we had/have on the team. Also if you check I said with the addition of Stump he might have some competition next year.

  144. Stephen Tsai November 13, 2011 5:35 pm

    Just spoke with Mo.

He was bummed last night, as expected, but is now more hopeful about his recovery. He reaffirmed the possibility of returning for the Hawaii Bowl, if UH qualifies.

  152. Garret November 13, 2011 6:36 pm

    Garret:

You are correct that usually the No. 3 guy only get mental reps.

But because Moniz was banged up, he was held out, allowing Graves and Austin to split reps.

    ST,

Good point that I had forgotten–you had reported that Moniz was missing practices, which means that both Graves and Austin got a lot more reps than normal recently. That helped get both of them prepared for the game and gave the coaches a LOT more reps to judge them on. Those extra reps gave Austin the chance to move ahead of Graves it appears.

  153. Garret November 13, 2011 6:37 pm

Fresno State will have a new defensive coordinator when they face the Warriors on Saturday. They made their LB coach their new DC.

Fresno State defensive coordinator Randy Stewart has stepped down from his role and will be replaced by Tim Skipper.

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7231942/fresno-state-bulldogs-replaces-defensive-coordinator-randy-stewart

  154. Garret November 13, 2011 6:45 pm

Had a nice time at Disneyland today, which helped me get over the game last night. Even though the weather was perfect (sunny, 72 degrees), it was pretty empty today and we got a lot done.

Now I’m just looking forward to the Fresno State game. This game is huge for both teams. I doubt that Fresno State could tolerate dropping to 3-8…their DC already got removed after yesterday’s loss. If UH loses, the Hawaii Bowl could be out of reach. So both teams have a lot riding on this game and it will be a huge battle.

UH is at home and Fresno State has been having huge problems on defense. They have a 3-game losing streak, giving up 48 points to NMSU, 41 points to La Tech, and 45 points to Nevada on their last 3 games. However, whichever QB UH starts will be having his first start of the season. If the game starts well, I think UH will roll over Fresno State and Austin/Graves will have a lot of confidence…if turnovers let Fresno State keep it close or take a lead at halftime, things could get tough.

My prediction is that whatever team is winning with 6:00 left in the 2nd quarter will win the game.

  155. Garret November 13, 2011 6:49 pm

Here is an interesting tidbit–it is possible that the MWC’s TV contract could be changed due to the alliance with CUSA! The MWC is being *horribly* underpaid by TV now and their TV contract forbids things like UH’s PPV…so it could be very good for UH to have the TV deal changed.

The strange thing is that Craig Thompson seems to be saying the the MWC will be more interested in the MWC/CUSA alliance if BSU and AF leave. But one big reason why BSU and AF might leave (and why BYU left) is because of the bad MWC TV deal…so, the MWC will only be interested in doing something to change the TV deal if BSU and AF leaves?

Thompson said the football “consolidation” with Conference USA is moving forward, even with both leagues potentially losing teams to the Big East.

Thompson said the leagues met with media consultants and attorneys last week. Thompson said it is possible that the league’s television contract could be renegotiated or altered as part of the consolidation and membership changes.

“We’re not settled yet. What decisions might Boise State or Air Force make, that’s the next timeline. Once those decisions are made, if they’re made to leave, then we’ll be talking more earnestly for sure. I talk to TV all the time. I talk to TV practically every day,’’ Thompson said.

By the way, BYU’s starting QB had rib and lung injuries in yesterday’s game and was replaced by the backup. He will miss their next game and may or may not be back in time for the UH game.

The Salt Lake Tribune said that BYU’s starting QB will probably miss their next 2 games but will start when he is healthy, which is projected to be their game against UH. He will have missed 2.5 games, so UH will probably have to prepare for both QBs.

not really in favor of a two QB system. I think Graves can be a gamer like Colt was. I think Austin can get the job done. Either way, I’ll be watching and cheering.

ST: earlier in the week, it was reported that Mo was seeing a MD.

Was the visitation anything to do with his leg/ankle?

  167. HawaiiMongoose November 13, 2011 8:40 pm

I don’t like the idea of Austin and Graves getting equal reps in practice this week and the coaches putting off a decision on a starter until game day. The coaches should make a decision (you know, a DECISION) early in the week about who they believe gives UH the best chance to win, and arrange for that QB to get maximum reps with the starting receivers.

That will maximize the likelihood of the chosen starter being physically ready and mentally prepared for the game. Moreover the team will benefit from having a specific individual to rally around.

Putting off a decision means the preparation work will be less focused and the team will spend the week grappling with uncertainty. This is fundamental leadership stuff and it’s mystifying to me that the coaches don’t grasp it.

Great post Hawaiimongoose. This is why I believe making game day decisions on injured starters is a bad idea. Letting a reserve know on Monday he will start gives them that extra focus to play well on game day. It also makes for better team moral. Leading the teams on Saturday begins on Monday, not a few minutes before game time.

Garret, I hope on Sunday you will be reporting that Fresno State gave up 50 points to UH.

  171. el burro sabio November 13, 2011 9:43 pm

The coaches probably know who they want to start at QB on Saturday. But why tell Pat Hill now?

  172. niho mano November 13, 2011 10:20 pm

Bryant Moniz thank you for being a great QB for the Warriors…I enjoyed your game play…exciting! just like Alexander, Brennan, Rolo, Chang, Robinson.

    #173,

Where is Karnak the magnificent when you need him?

  175. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 13, 2011 10:55 pm

Although a lot of us are disappointed about the 2012 game outcomes – and concerned about the long-term impacts of the injuries – let us remember that we not only have two other potential winning teams who’ve just lauched their seasons but we also have a third team more than capable of getting into the Sweet Sixteen NCAA regionals in four weeks.

Who all is going to the ESPN game tomorrow night? We’re meeting up with Protector for dinner before heading on up to The Stan.

The Stadium Authority will be moving up its monthly meeting to this coming Thursday because the fourth Thursday in November is Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend because I need to be at three other meetings being held at the same time downtown.

The current Authority Chair will be turning over the gavel as of November 30 since his term is up and he cannot be re-appointed because he’s served eight years. Two more vacancies will be coming up by the end of this fiscal year – June 30. Don’t be surprised if you hear/read that a Tsai-ko will be applying for the first vacancy. Let’s get others to apply for the other two as well.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, DrDoc and I are planning to go out to dinner that day. Normally, we’d be a church potluck, but it’s been canceled this year because no one stepped forward to chair it. Price is not a concern but superb food and great service are. Any suggestions?

If we cannot come up with some good ideas as to where to go, most likely we’ll volunteer to serve at one of the homeless shelters or at the Salvation Army’s big community dinner.

  176. SteveM November 13, 2011 10:58 pm

Wow–QB controversy stuff is usually always good for 200 comments, so we’re a little slow now…even if there is no controversy.

I favor Austin for his patience and preserverance in the program. I like his long ball–reminds me of Timmy Chang. Wouldn’t his continued success echo those of a second team senior quarterback named Rolovich long ago? I admit my memory may be faulty.

I like Graves as the potential QB of the near future. I wish them both well.

I remember the things surrounding Super Bowls in the past–the study of bio-rythyms, horoscopes, personal habits, alignment of the stars, etc. to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the QB and star players on game day. If the coaches say “Game Day Decision” on announcing the starter, they have evaluated the intangibles as well as feats as long as the week allows.

…and as el burro sabio points out in #171… why give a wily coach like Pat Hill a preview? 🙂

Work tomorrow so will miss much…good night!

Wow. Less than 200 posts on the day following a game. Not even the grumblers have shown up. I hope no one has given up on the team. Patched up with band aids and duct tape, I expect the Warriors will fight like hell. No matter who is the QB, I expect to see a very different offense this Saturday. I expect to see a more confident and aggressive special teams on the field. I expect to see an adjusted defense that stonewalls the Fresnicks. I’ll be in my usual seat at Aloha Stadium yelling like crazy and supporting the Warriors.

  181. back pain relief ideas November 14, 2011 1:29 am

Considering the fact that the majority or between 70 and 90 percent of the population will experience some sort of back pain at one time or another, knowledge about back pain relief is certainly welcome, appreciated and a popular topic. One of the best ways to begin learning about back pain relief is by understanding the basics of back pain: what causes it, how it’s diagnosed, what treatments are available, how to manage the pain, etc.

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana,

Continue to be impressed by how many former head coaches of major college football teams continue to post on this blog. I sure hope they submit their resumes when they get their wish and UH pulls another Red Rocha/Riley Wallace on a man who has filled the roster with promising recruits, signed two of the most promising coaches in Rolovich and Aranda, and two of the best former head coaches in Tomey and Davis. Of course, with their vast experience, they will have no trouble retaining the existing players who came to Hawaii to play for Coach Mack or coaches that leave for retirement or higher paying opportunities with more prestigious schools. And we know they will never call an inappropriate timeout or make an error in the heat of battle because …Err well because they wouldn’t, or they never do when they are playing their video games, or they didn’t when they were coaching or playing at what level???…

This year’s YTD stats on the top 2 QB choices:

    David Graves: 16 for 22 for 123yds, 72.7%, 0 TD/0 INT; 6 rush for 47, 2 TD

    Shane Austin: 20 for 41 for 261yds, 48.8%, 1 TD/3 INT; 2 rush for -12, 0 TD

Looking at the stats alone, Graves seems like the easy pick. McMuffin needs to realize his job is on the line and go with the QB that will get the job DONE!

Ive thought the same thing after watching that show. Its not so much sentimental attachment as it is the fact that I hate wasting stuff and abhor the idea of tossing shit into a landfill.I have these grand ideas that saving all this cardboard (broken down and flattened, at least) with the ostensible plan of using it as fire kindling will spare space in the landfill.I keep junk mail stashed next to the fireplace for the same purpose in the fear that someone will use it to steal my identity and run up a $3000 Sprint phone bill in my name.Plastic 2 liters of Diet Coke my housemate empties will have some sort of garden use, likewise with the plastic grocery bags (because my attempts to get the house converted over to paper fell on deaf ears), and I have years worth of clothes I wont wear but somehow think will wind up being rags for the random times when I change the oil in the lawn mower.Artwork that never gets put up on the wall, comic books that only get read once, books that never get read at allbut yeah, you can see all the floors in the house and theres no accidental taxidermy happening under my furniture, so I think Im good. For now.

The Nike soccer cleats Tiempo IV Elite’s upper is comprised of an ultra-soft kangaroo leather upper Nike mercurial soccer cleats that once featured on the original Nike Mercurial Superfly boots. However, using new technologies such as the addition of Flywire and the carbon Mercurial Vapors fiber soleplate, they’ve managed to bring the boot down to a brilliant 8.2 ounces. The Tiempo IV Elite now has visibility enhancing patterns on the heel in an effort to get teammates to notice the wearer quicker. The way Nike does this is by using Mercurial Vapor Superfly 3 Volt diagonals on the heel which increases the peripheral vision of teammates.

With the first New nike soccer shoes Elite colourway release since the inception of the boot, the Mercurial Vapor Superfly IV range carries the thought of a classic football boot with a modern twist. Nike Football Cleats have taken this concept and thrown it right into your face with this new colourway. The addition of Volt not only clashes with the classy nature of the Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly boot, but it might also cause some clashes with the fans!
