Nash gets contract extension; UH gets 2nd ESPN game

Congratulations to basketball coach Bob Nash, who received a contract extension. Nash is entering the final year of an original three-year contract. He received a rollover for the 2010-2011 and an option for the 2011-2012 season.

ESPN or ESPN2 will televise the Dec. 5 football game between UH and Wisconsin. The Sept. 30 game between UH and Louisiana Tech will be shown on ESPN2.

Linebacker Blaze Soares said he is on track to earn his bachelor’s degree this summer. He was a non-qualifier out of high school, and attended Hawaii Pacific his first year. He was injured all of last year. Because he earned a degree in four years (and has only played two seasons), he will apply for a hardship to allow him to play in 2010.

Sorry, fellas. Marissa Bonilla is engaged to former UH defensive end Melila Purcell III. The wedding will be next February.

Chris Black appears to the No. 1 left cornerback.
Black, who barely played last year as a JC transfer, has only one year of eligibility remaining.Black was inelgible the first few games of 2008 while his transcripts were evaluated. He made three road trips, but did not play in any because of an injury.
Unfortunately, his situation is not unique. The process of verifying grades and transferrable credits is not an easy one for players coming from junior colleges. Some wind up sitting out training camp. Erik Robinson’s eligibility, for instance, wasn’t approved until a few weeks after the 2007 season started.
It would have been nice to see Black have two full seasons.

UH accepted the best available options for the 2009 football schedule.
But, c’mon, as the school in the most isolated state, there had to be better choices than a schedule that includes a 36-day gap between home games.
Sure, the trouble is linked to ESPN’s Wednesday night game, which requires a team to burn two bye weekends. But since ESPN offers UH a sweet bowl arrangement, that relationship must be respected. It would have been nice for UH supporters if the Wednesday game were scheduled later in the season, when the byes would have been more useful.

UH does have very strict standards and, of course, some archaic guidelines. When I started at UH Architecture for my MArch they weren’t really set up to accept students like myself who had a 4 year BS in Architecture and some really pretty silly choices had to be made. For instance, at MIT we had one basic history of architecture class. UH broke the same content into two. I don’t remember where the break was, but they were both required classes. So, they gave me credit for one class. I could take my pick and had to take the other class, the content of which I had just taken a year before. It was easy enough, but what a waste of time. Same thing with structures and a few other requirements.

  19. Mr Colomaohana April 1, 2009 8:09 am

    Good morning psychotic tsaikos.

Some JC transfers are outstanding athletes and hardly have any showtime.

Doesn’t each college student at most colleges have assigned academic counselors? I feel that the academic counselors at both schools should assist transfer students in transcripts and transferable credits.
I am not a counselor or in the education field and I may not know how the system works in each college but maybe that’s why some people get discouraged from transferring to another school to obtain higher or better education.

I agree with everything ST wrote here…ESPN got its way of course, since they had all the power. UH gets a national TV game on a Wednesday when there shouldn’t be much else against it and gets extra days to prepare for the ESPN game. It would have been nice for the Wednesday game to be later in the season, but maybe ESPN had other programming already arranged for later in the football season?

  22. Garret April 1, 2009 8:15 am

I hope that Chris Black has an awesome final college season and fills UH’s need at CB. It is too bad that he couldn’t get cleared until so late last year, but that can’t be helped now.

The problem with JC transfer eligibility is one reason why Mac is correct to focus his JC recruiting on players that are eligible early. The JC guys that are already enrolled at UH don’t have worry about being eligible for Fall camp…they are going to get to go through Spring practice also!

Trouble is, lots of other schools that recruit JCs also go after the December transfers. In the past, JC players might have gone to UH instead of BCS schools because they had to worry about their eligibility…now, Mac will probably only go after a JC player who is exceptional unless they are December transfers.

  23. Garret April 1, 2009 8:17 am

This writer says that Washington should trade for Cutler and puts down Colt.

How about if Denver asks for this year’s first and Campbell? I try to get back a second or third this year or next but if that’s what it takes I do it.

I like Campbell a lot. I’ve even been categorized as a Jason Campbell apologist. He still has a ways to go but in the absence of a viable alternative—and I do not believe that Colt Brennan is anywhere near viable at this point in time—I’d rather give him one year too many to prove himself rather than one year too few.

Cutler isn’t just a viable alternative; he is a major upgrade.

Good morn to all and our fearless scribe and happy Fool’s day.
Ba-a-wa-haha to our 2009 schedule that has the feel of a Chicago deal…dont they kiss you before they et tu Brute in the back?
Not in the WAC, so, get over it, there is no foreplay or missionary-positions when it comes to scheduling Hawaii.

C’mon, it’s not like Hawaii hasnt shot itself in the foot scheduling a season–REM hermie–he was a gem at self-induced purple hearts.
Did JJ do UH a favor by scheduling Florida @ Gainsville than downgrading Teebow on ESPN, the year he wins the Heisman?

Y so complacent about our JUCOs losing a season?
    Tsai wrote:

    Cavalier, indeed.

Now, ever since you animated the infamous ‘drinkin bud’ we all know UH upper campus bureau-cracks twiddle their thumbs and move lethargically when pushed into the “Football player-transcript” mode.
For them, it turns on a whole new world of comparative subject matter and course description.
    Rocket science stuff? uh…

    Benson and Bristol?
    They are innocuous by contrast.
At least we know what to expect.

In Hawaii, our programs often KIA by friendly fire.
    So what else is news?

  28. Garret April 1, 2009 8:23 am

However, this article has some good news from Jim Zorn.

In a surprise, Zorn revealed that he’s planning on giving Brennan extensive playing time during the preseason because he’s seriously thinking of playing Brennan over Campbell this season.

“After reviewing the preseason tapes and practice tapes from last season, we have decided that we do not need to trade for Cutler because we think that Colt has a brighter future,” said Zorn. “We need to get Colt ready for this season, so he’ll play most of our preseason games, including when the first team is on the field. Campbell and Collins are veterans who know the offense, so they don’t need much work to be ready for the season.”

  29. Garret April 1, 2009 8:26 am

I hope that the players at UH’s Pro Day can avoid the hamstring injuries that hurt so many of the Warriors’ draft chances last year!

    Kekoa

You would think there would be some kind of appeal process but not at the time. I was able to pass out of one of the structures requirements but I still had to get the credits in another class — they gave me the class but didn’t reduce the total credits.

A lot of people do not realize how rigorous UH is with requirements. It took me 6 semesters to get an MArch, and that is coming in with an architecture degree. I doubled up on studios for two semesters and did my thesis in one. Most of my undergrad friends who continued in architecture at places like Cal got their masters degree in 3 or 4 semesters.

My mom has been teaching at UH for 35 years and even when she was department head she had little leeway in dealing with school requirements. She is at the School of Nursing, BTW.

  35. homey ℞ April 1, 2009 8:50 am

    Good morning all.

Mr. C – Yup, you would think the counselors, advisers, compliance officers, etc. at the JC’s will ensure credits are transferable. But then UH would also have to verify on their side that the assumed transferable courses are counterparts of required courses at UH. That’s why sometimes it takes long to sort through all the paperwork. I just made that up…sounded good to me though. hahaha

The 2009 football schedule is a red herring storyline.
Its a quamire of whinning with no positive outlook.
    Let’s play football!

Gordie Shaw and Chris Tormey are the headliners for 2009.
These two coaching aquisitions may have the impact of a recruiting class fraught with 5-star recruits.

The main focus of this team is our OL, regretfully a much maligned unit.
Ever since the departure of CAV our OL has been a gypsy- in-transit managed by a motley assortment RB coaches turned OL coaches-to-easy riders turned commando-to OL appreticeship-turned-RB coach.

    Phew.

    Enter Gordie.
An accomplished journeyman coming from a program that is part of a conference that coined the phrase smash ball.
Coach Shaw knows what it takes and will take what he knows to produce the Big Ten template at Hawaii.
    This will interesting.
    If not fun.
Like watching JJ and Paul Johnson in their inaugural year.
Dont miss it or be misled by other divisionary distractions.
Gordie Shaw and his OL will be the signature entree in 2009.

The key to MACs attack on D will be the coverage of his safeties.
    Enter Chris Tormey.
Glanville called this group the “last line of defense”.
Last year, our vulnerability on the backside was often exposed by our blitzes up front.
Miano is a great scheme guy and prolific windtalker when flashing signals on the sideline.
Hopefully, Tormey can compliment Coach Rich with an admixture of experience and technique not neccesarily related to red cones and combine-type drills.

Naturally, talent plays heavily, but so does charisma.
This is another position worth watching.
Best wishes to Coach Tormey–we need improvement!

  81. (Jesse)James April 1, 2009 11:20 am

Good morning Tsaikos…another esme day in Hawaii nei. I agree with Stretch, the schedule still sucks but, ah, sometimes you have to be like DPK and play with what you got….LMAO J/K DPK….

I have to also agree with Stretch and homey though, I’ve heard that they do achieve some things quickly….MWAHAHAHAHAHA although I’ve also been guilty as charged on that account….LMAO

  85. Stephen Tsai April 1, 2009 11:40 am

    OK. I’m back.
    A few things:
    • Those are granules used to hold down the field. Eventually, they will settle. For now, wear slippers to practice.
    • I saw poor Johnny Mac today. It’s tough to go 36 days between home games. Thing is, it actually could have been worse.
    • Talked to Gordy Shaw today. He’s pretty optimistic about Laupepa Letuli. Said the guy really is picking it up.
    • Don’t have the full roster of Pro Day participants. But Jake Patek and Amani Purcell are giving it another shot.

  97. Garret April 1, 2009 12:03 pm

    Bess mentioned here.

The Dolphins’ best talent at WR may be Davone Bess, who was signed as a rookie free agent last season out of Hawaii. Bess showed potential in flashes at times last year, but his best value is likely as a return man and a slot receiver.

    warriorfanny,

Sorry, post #28 was just an experiment. I wanted to see if anyone would notice what the link was or if they would realize that was made up. The thing is, by choosing Colt I figured that UH fans might wonder if it was a real story because we know how Colt is worthy of a real shot at playing time.

I was going to continue #28 further, but worked popped up so I had to leave the blog for awhile. Too late now to continue what I had planned…

So, ESPN only wants the Wisconsin game and the La Tech game on Wednesday…but wants to show BSU 6 times. Sadly, that is not an April Fools thing. Nevada gets 4 ESPN games and La Tech gets 3, so I guess ESPN favors them over UH.

  107. Jason April 1, 2009 12:14 pm

Congrats to Melila and Marissa! And to Blaze! And that’s good for Coach Nash. I agree, the next question is Wilton. Young squad, harder to recruit, that’s a tough situation to be in too.

  121. homey ℞ April 1, 2009 12:39 pm

A-House – Interesting #115. I don’t attend and rarely watch MVB. When you say strategize do you mean huddling/conferring with the other coaches and try to figure things out, or huddling with the team during timeouts and between games, looking at his notebook or whatever source of information he has and decide on what to do next? Does it look like he is just going on hunches? Has his coaching style changed after all these years?

  122. Stephen Tsai April 1, 2009 12:43 pm

    A-House:
Don’t think the problem is strategizing.
Think the problem is passing. UH has had problems passing the past couple of years. If you can’t pass, you can’t run an offense. Two of their better passers this year are freshmen. But Steven Hunt missed all of that time with a fractured hand, and Gus Tuaniga was our four matches because of an academic issue. It’s a young team.

  130. al ™ April 1, 2009 12:55 pm

homey 109…….i think that blaze really needs to have a great year this year and to stay off of the injury list. then, he needs to get hardship year and put up numbers and again show that he is not injury prone. he hasn’t really played a full year and that is probably the biggest knock on him right now. he also needs to get his forty in the 4.7’s.

  131. homey ℞ April 1, 2009 1:01 pm

Re-Michelle Wie’s statements in an interview with a reporter as she sets her sights on this weeks Kraft Nabisco Championship

“I wish I didn’t hurt my wrist, that’s the one big thing. But that already happened and I don’t like looking into the past. Now all I want to do is focus on the present, try my hardest and look into the future.”

“I want to win but I can’t really control that,” Wie said. “All I can control is how I play and how hard I try. I guess I just take a different outlook on my life now.”

“I’ve stopped worrying about stuff that I can’t handle. I’m just going to try my hardest. If it works out, then great; if it doesn’t, then I know I’ve tried my hardest.”

In the article it says Michelle Wie has completed her first year at Stanford, and is very happy in her life. This may be true. But what I sense when reading her responses are a zen like, spiritual resolve about her that’s a contrast from the past. Her sights, now, seemingly, are being in the moment. Before it was
Michelle being caught up in the euphoria of super stardom, which became intensified because she wanted to take on the world. Now, smartly, she taking on what’s in front of her–the next eighteen holes. And this is the maturity, the spiritual uplift and a change in resolve I see in her as she’s carries forth this different approach in demeanor. A humbler Michelle that’s hungrier to conquer the course is imo a better golfer than the Michelle we have known from the past that was over sated with lofty goals. Now, having the least amount of pressure, the least amount of worry on her will probably eventually see Michelle doing better on the tour. Tomorrow’s tournament is big.

GENERAL INFORMATION ( copied from the Kraft Nabisco site)

    Round 2 Pairings

    Tee #1
    Start Time : 12:56 PM
    Michelle Wie
    Ai Miyazato

    Note-

Teen phenom Alexis Thompson focuses on making cut at Kraft Nabisco Championship. And at 14 all eyes will be on her, as they were when Michelle debuted at this tournament at 13 .

    http://msn.foxsports.com/golf/story/9405746/Is-Wie-ready-to-finally-break-through
    ( copied from Fox sports)

For the record Wie’s love affair with Mission Hills began at an early age. In 2003 she tied for ninth here as a 13-year-old, making her the youngest player to make the cut at the Kraft Nabisco. She followed that up with a fourth-place finish in ’04, a T-14 in ’05 and T-3 in 2006.

    (copied from Fox sports)
People have to understand there’s a bigger picture than her being a great golfer,” Leadbetter said. “She wants to do more than just be a golfer. That’s her MO. People have to respect that.”

Leadbetter went on to say that Wie often talks about wanting to do philanthropic work in her post-golf life, becoming “a global person.”

She has said she won’t play golf past the age of 30.

“She’s a very smart girl,” Leadbetter said. “She has always said she wants to use golf as a means to an end.”

….And the one quote that I hope comes to fruition, hopefully the one in reference of the winning golfer of the championship traditionally jumping in the pond outside the eighteenth hole.

…But for Michelle, and what an example of confidence, told this reporter maybe humorlessly (and maybe not) that her and her caddy mapped out the deepest area of the pond to jump into…

“I hopefully want it to be a graceful jump, but it’ll probably turn out to be a really ugly one, unfortunately,” Wie said. “But I don’t really care as long as I get to.”

Good luck to Michelle, I hope to be watching her on television this Sunday, and making a splash would be nice.

Michele Wie is more Patty Hearst suffering from Stockholm syndrome than she is Phil Jackson espousing zen philosophy.
She is traveling in parallel universes: first as a child-student attempting to be professional; and now as a professional possing as a student.

I like you your first sentence…too funny!

  162. al ™ April 1, 2009 1:50 pm

warriorfanny….the nash extension was still the right thing to do for the warrior basketball program.

had it not been afforded, all recruiting would have come to a dead stop like it did the year hf failed to replace riley in a timely manner. that would have envoked a certain “death sentence” to our recruiting efforts.

financially, it was a prudent thing to do. if nash turns it around then it cost us little as compared to the average salaries today. he needs to turn this around next year, otherwise, he could be bought out for the next year. which again would be a reasonable fee should it get to this point.

nash has been a loyal supporter of the state and the basketball program for two/thirds of his life. i think it was the least that we could do for him.

i hope a lot has been learned over the past two years and will pay dividends for nash and company. a lot of improvement is needed in talent, systems, philosophy, and game management, but, we all deserve a second chance.

al, with all due respect I dont agree with your thesis.
It is flawed with the presumption that a dead period will never come in transition.
This was the best time to dump Bob Nash.
Im convinced JD would have if he could of.

Nash didnt lose any seniors so recruiting wasnt as acute a concern.
If JD had the kala, he would fire Nash, bring another coach on board in time for recruiting in 2010.

But, Donovan cant even dump a consensus lemon like Jim Bolla, how the hell is he going to find the resource to jettison Nash?

Look, Bob Nash held on to his job more because UH cant afford to fire him than he measured up to satisfactory performance as a coach.
    bank it!

    homey:

your #121 – Wilton does not know when to pull out his top players as does Al Scates even if the play rants and raves and it has always paid off against UH.

Most explicit example was the 1995 National finals at UCLA vs UH. Before game 4, Scates pulled out his super star and benched him for the whole game while Wilton kept Katz in. In game 5, Katz was totally useless because he was so tired – his arm swing was like spaghetti. Nihipali, on the other hand, was refreshed and totally ripped UH and UCLA won another championship.

Go back and watch past UH/UCLA matches and you will find the same thread – Scates out coaches Wilton every time.

Tomorrow’s tournament is big.

roysan16, i dont look at kraft nabisco tournament at anything more for michelle wie than just another tournament. It only become important for her if she wins. she already has a tie3rd, 4th, and tie9th, 3 top ten finishes in this event. if wie plays well this week, it will not be a surprise to me since she has had much success in the past at this course, which seems to suit her game. forget last weeks poor showing, the tourney is over, there is no pressure on her, she has nothing to lose. michelle wie plays her best when expectations are low and if she putts well this week, she can be in the top 10. if not, well next tournament. believe her contract endorsement may end this year, trying to re-negotiate another 20 million a year deal to compete against the ladies seem farfetched. why did wie get payed 20 million a year again? oh yeah, to play the pga tour. will this ever happen? what do you think roysan

A-House – I guess it’s different coaching styles and philosophies. A coach should know his players abilities and if he keeps him in the game then I would think he has the confidence in the player to perform at a high level.

I was thinking that Coach Wilton changed his style of coaching from day 1 to today. But I guess that is not the case.

BTW, isn’t Scates the coach that gets a TV from Wilton every tournament?

  183. A-House April 1, 2009 2:31 pm

    homey:

Perhaps, no change from day1, but this is exactly my point. Yes, the team has won many matches over the years, but how many were really when Wilton made the tough decisons on who plays and when. It would certainly behoove a coach to know the limits and capabilities of every player to take advantage of the opponent’s weaknesses.

I have not seen this from him.

Scates did get 1 TV from Wilton – maybe 5 years ago when UCLA came down for the first VB tournament in March or April. Unsure if he got any more.

I had a follow-up post to #28 with Jason Campbell upset about the plans for Colt and asking for a trade. I even had him talking about wanting to go to Oakland because he heard that they got a good center this offseason.

I then had another post ready with trade announcement that would have made it obvious that it was an April Fools thing…

Maybe next year I’ll get my series of “articles” posted before being interrupted for work.

  198. Pauoa Boy April 1, 2009 2:58 pm

Coach Nash needs to just get some true to their position type players. Meaning a true point guard with vision, handles, and pass first mentality. Also a low post banger to dominate the paint and a pure shooting guard. Those are obvious needs that I’ve seen from this past years team that was lacking. Rod Flemings needs help and someone to get him the ball so he doesn’t have to always create on his own. We got too many small forward types and guys with athleticism but lacking in those areas I mentioned. My only knock on Coach Nash is that stagnant offense which is so boring and easily recognizable for defenses to stop. Also, his deer in the headlights look and inability to adjust during the game irritates the ish out of me.

  199. YpoWarrior April 1, 2009 3:01 pm

    warriorfanny,

Your question is a lot more hypothetical than mine’s. With that said, I think that if the “other” hc was hired on the same day as Nash, the results would probably be very similar.

Of course, there are a lot more variables if it was someone other than Nash. Would the same players that left the other year (Waters, Lowenthal, etc.) still be here? Would Flemings still come to UH? Would the “other” hc recruit better players? etc., etc.

Like you said, “hypotheticals means nada”.

    JD-
If you are truly looking to balance the budget, try shedding some fat, literally and and figuratively, from the football coaching staff. Seems to me that if you got rid of a piece of fat that is costing you $1 million per year and got you some lean ground beef for say, oh, how about $275,000 per year, you wouldn’t have to cancel either basketball or volleyball. Trim some fat from the other areas of the coaching staff and you could say a cool million per year. You would then use the savings from this fat cutting exercise to shore up the other programs.

This seems reasonable to me. What say you?

However, we are still face to face on the threshold question,
does Bob Nash deserve a roll-over.
Althougth the Q is now moot, my opuinion is absolutely NO.
He got his opportunity once. Twice, is a mistake. especially in these times when every dollar lost at the turnstile affects all UHAD programs.
Wahine sports, with the exception of VB, are not revenue producing.
Men’s basketball is potentially the #2 money leader at UH Manoa, we cannot afford to support our favorite sons if they dont earn their way.

What message are we sending to our tax payers?
Isnt Lingle proposing to cut salaries, even jobs.

Clearly, at 24-36, Bob Nash has failed to lend confidence in his ability to upgrade and contribute to the total package.
    This is not personal–its business.
This is tax paying dollars being expended on salaries and facilities. Jim Donovan has to wake up and smell the coffee during these economic downturns.

He was hired to make tough decisions not to maintain a support system for underperforming coaches.

Be responsible, free rides will endanger our total UHAD package–its time to measure up–like everyone else in this State.

  231. kama krab April 1, 2009 3:56 pm

    warriorfanny,

I gotta agree with you on a couple of points. JD has had to make some diffficult decision lately that will affect our AD for years to come. In regard to the Nash decision, I feel that even though it might not have been the right decision, something needed to be done to ensure that he would have a chance to recruit and not be sitting here as a lame duck trying to salvage whatever he could in a recruiting class. Yes Hawaii could have cut ties with him but if they wanted to do so then they would have needed to make a decision a long time ago, which did not happen. So the only thing that was left to do was extend him for another year or two which is what happened. If they had extended his contract more than that, then I would be skeptical. One to two years I feel is a good enough contract to see if he can actually coach with his recruits. If he is not able to do so, then in 2011 it is time to look elsewhere.

    ok,
budget cuts again…biggest increase in pay went to who? that was a 1,000% pay increase (jason please check my math) if my archaic math skills prevail. my suggestion, and i was a lone man on the totem pole, was go to 350k and put some incentives based on performance. and the benchmarks would be in the class and on the field. looking back we have one of the highest paid 7-7 coaches in the country….so this year is very, very, pivotal for coach and his team.

i’m not crying over spilled milk guys, i am talking about ROI which we all know as Return On Investment, and I think that the eyes of Manoa are watching very closely the developments with our Warriors.

the first year for nash is a wash. too late to recruit.

this year, a couple of good recruits could not replace the seven graduated seniors. we still had no firepower.

this third year will be telling. he needs to bring in 2-3 guys who can play. four if he has the heart to bid adieu to 2-3 current scholarship players. but, the fate of this team is dependent upon that. the fate of this coaching staff is dependent upon that too.

  249. roysan16 April 1, 2009 7:02 pm

    replying to layson

why did wie get payed 20 million a year again? oh yeah, to play the pga tour. will this ever happen? what do you think roysan

Obviously the sponsors have to ask themselves initially if they’re getting their bang for their buck by signing the then 16 yr. old Michelle to these big deals and I think they were, especially when everyone thought the teen sensation was going to take over the LPGA in the same manner Tiger took over the PGA. So the sponsors invested in her future based on projections that she was going to do well. The upside could have been tremendous, mainly her star power would have appealed to the consumer markets of the US and globally because of her youth and diverse ethnicity. Factor in the demographics that Michelle appeals to and it’s easy to see why the sponsors wanted her badly. For Nike, one of Michelle’s sponsors, also gambled that she was going to be in the spotlight winning tournaments with the familiar Nike swoosh and golf clubs and balls predominately displayed for all the television viewers to see. So far this hasn’t been the case. So far it’s been a four year relationship that has seen it’s ups and downs as Michelle’s career has been hampered with a wrist injury.

The focus, now, is trying to regain her form on the LPGA tour and not look off in peripheral. Not unless something extraordinary happens to her game do I ever again expect to see the PGA extending an sponsors invitation to her.

Presently, the sponsorship people and even for Michelle they’re clinging on to the glimmer of hope that things will come around. And they have, for she did well in qualifying and then doing well in another tournament in regaining her tour card last December. Then in January she played the best golf in the last two years, placing second in the tournament held here. And then last week she made the cut, although finishing way behind the leaders. So there’s some promise, and maybe the talent level is on the rise again.

When I looked at Michelle’s year-to-date stats the problem lies in her accuracy off the tie, where she ranks 125th in driving accuracy. So boom, minor tweak here, and maybe she’ll be on track and the glimmer of hope gets larger. Right?

Finally, layson, I think this week’s tournament is huge for Michelle because it’s a major tournament featuring the top golfers from around the World competing with her. A great showing here could do wonders to her psyche, which is important. And set the tone, I believe, for the future. When people say what’s missing from her game is confidence I believe them. And I think the quicker she regains this the better. With this week’s tournament against the best competition there’s no finer way to regain one’s confidence by having outplaying her fellow golfers. And my hope is that she does, and that’s why I say this tournament is important to her. Additionally, she knows that the more and more she fails in tournaments the likelihood of her sponsors weening themselves away plays a big part of her wanting to perform well . Again, imo this tournament is huge for her.

  250. chawan_cut April 1, 2009 7:32 pm

    ralph, al,
i think you’re right. there’s a lot of bench players that aren’t panning out. we’ll need more scholarships to build for the future (past next year). i know nash is a nice guy, but he’ll have to make that tough decision to let some guys go.
i know wallace had a lot of players that didn’t work out too. they left the program one way or another, but we didn’t hear how or why. the internet wasn’t as prevalant then and news didn’t get out as much as it does now.
i’m thinking that wheeler didn’t know his future either after HF’s decision to not renew riley’s contract. HF didn’t tell anyone anything. so all the coaches were in limbo. HF has hurt the program in so many ways. we’re slowly recovering. poor Temple.
i’m hoping it all works out.

Hope that Coach Nash can get the job done next season.

  252. d1島 April 1, 2009 7:40 pm

IMHO possible reason why ESPN is showing more of their games than UH is that BS-You has more of a “Golden Boy” in Kellen Moore than UH does with GA. Same with Reno and Kaepernick.
…as for LaTech getting three dates? 😕 My only theory is “Squeaky wheel”???

Ralph, good point. Are people going to be happy w/ 18 wins a year. I don’t think so. It’s not going to get us into the postseason. This past season, the schedule was not tough and they still only won 13 games. They couldn’t win on the road (have we seen the same thing over and over before.) It’s really a joke. Nobody on the team can consistently hit the trey, not even close to averaging 40%. Nobody on the team is good on the dribble drive and can get their own shot. I listen to John Calipari today and he looks for recruits who can dribble the ball because he likes to play the uptempo game. The jury is still out on whether Nash and his staff can recruit better players. In college, to be a good team they have to have good guard play and three point shooting. Sadly, UH does not have the right ingedients. What’s the point in getting a big man when the backcourt consistently turnover the ball. All you have to know is Anthony Carter, Alika Smith, Carl English, Savo, McIntyre, Ruffin, Akana, Phl Lott, etc. The best players to play for UH were guards. Oh yeah, two more things. Tom Henderson and Jerome Freeman. I rest my case. Jim Donovan, you have a lot of problems. The women’s basketball team is also in shambles. The softball team is so-so. The men’s volleyball team is not going to the playoff and don’t hav enought good players to win. That said, at least baseball is doing pretty well right now. I reseve judgment on the football team, but I’m not going to get too excited on them either until I see them play. I think they are what we think they are.
    Give me a Coors Light!!!!!

    d1shima,

Two of La Tech’s ESPN games are on Wednesdays. They play one less game this season than UH, so they could burn their 2 bye weeks on playing Wednesday games. Playing 13 games in 14 weeks, UH couldn’t have played 2 Wednesday games…

  263. Garret April 1, 2009 8:01 pm

The Titans are bringing in David Veikune…so, two of the teams interested in Veikune are Arizona (to play with or replace Travis LaBoy) and Tennessee (to possibly fill the hole left when LaBoy went to Arizona).

The agent for Hawaii defensive end David Veikune also confirmed that his client is scheduled to come to Nashville next week to visit with the Titans.

Caught JD on the Animals this afternoon. Interesting that out of the 6 things he evaluates the coaches on, winning is the LAST item on the list. As I listened to him go through the list, I couldn’t help but think that e-Bolla is 0-for-6.

Kekoa – you been keeping that pile of firewood nice and dry? I’m thinking we need some more cuz when we cure UH of the e-Bolla virus, we going make da biggest bonfire ever!! I’ll get hubby going on another pile. Shouldn’t be too hard. 😀 🙄

  276. practice goer.............. April 1, 2009 8:40 pm

ok, i went to practice and watch practice. i watch the offense and will give my assessment of qb and rcevers since we run a pass team that is what i watched. i only will give numbers cause i dont know who anyone is. I actually took notes …
#12 is the best qb. 16 not bad, but missed some passes.
#22 looks real good at rb
#89 is pretty good but has a few drops here and there. i would say #5 is better in the patterns he runs (best route runner and hands by a landslide) but 89 is a bit thicker. #5 needs to hit the weight room~ but for the 3rd spot , #81 .
at slot, they had #1 , who was a wide out last year. he looks great there.
#21 is real good and # 6 is the next.
    other stand out recievers
#87 not bad, not the fastest , but big , good hands
#34 not fast but ran good routes
#3 pretty quick guy, i am thinking he is a j. c. cause he seems very mature. not great route runner………………… almost as fast as #5!
#84 very tall, not fast, ok great route runner, drops , always bobbing his head???? dont know what that means….. but when he makes a cut, he bobs his head like a bobble head doll//////
#80 hard hands, thick guy, not very fast.

    thats it…. for now.

  277. Ralph April 1, 2009 8:44 pm

Nah!…everybody too busy now days. Dey all worry about da economy. No mo time fo dis kine protest. Might miss dere ride home and have to catch bus. All da good plate lunch places closed now…meanwhile, Bolla clings on to his job while keeping a low life profile.

practice goer: Thanks for the awesome recap! Here’s a list of the players that he mentioned, along with what I thought from Monday:

#12: Greg Alexander (mechanics look better now that the knee looks healthy)
    #16: Brent Rausch
#22: Jayson Rego (he looked solid, looks like he slimmed down a bit)
    #89: Malcolm Lane
    #5: Billy Ray Stutzmann
    #81: Royce Pollard
    #1: Greg Salas
#21: Kealoha Pilares (looked really good on Monday too, looks bigger and faster)
    #6: Dustin Blount
    #87: Mike Tinoco
    #34: Miah Ostrowski
#3: Rodney Bradley (you noticed the poor route running too, eh — but yeah, he’s got some ability to get deep)
    #84: Joe Avery
    #80: Daniel Lofton

I respect you opinion roysan16. imo, this tournament can make her season but a bad showing will not break it. wie has proven that she can compete against the women finishing 2nd and 3rd many times. now wie needs to prove that she can win, anything else imo is a failure for her. nobody cares who comes in 2nd place or 54th place for that matter. winning is not easy but when it is all said and done, there is only 1 champion per tourney. annika sorenstam won 90 tourney including 72 lpga tourneys. tiger woods won 90 tourneys including 66 on pga tour. if wie is to be called a champion, she needs to win. i will be surprised if she cannot win an lpga tourney in next few years if not this year.

Re: Coach Nash, he WOULD have had a better record if he had been hired sooner & not lost out on 2-3 players that have already made an impact at OTHER schools. Then this crud about questioning Nash’s ability would be non-existent. This upcoming season should be a heckuva lot better & you can quote me on this, If not, I’ll reluctantly acquiesce to opinions like those of warriorfanny who I believe to be way off the mark & failz to take significant factors into consideration. As for Blaze, it would be great if he can avoid injury & get that additional year because I’d love to see him lay some hat on the Trojans in 2010!

    Hiya!
Wow- lots of chatter and not too many jokes today… makes for an odd April Fools! chawan_cut gets my silly award for his hulihuli posts.

In times of trouble and need, at least on Kauai, we get the “Iniki Effect”. People with the least to spare give most generously.

I like that approach very much. My preferred response to our struggling athletic dept. is more SUPPORT and less criticism. My objective is to see the teams SUCCEED and not say “I told you they would fail” just to be “right”.

To me, economics is not about purely material resources. It is a material indicator of a lack of spiritual and creative direction. Focused, dedicated and united teams can do miracles with very little while others with virtually unlimited budgets can still fail when egos are running rampant and team spirit is lacking.

Hawaii could lead the nation in a lot of ways during times of economic hardship – with solid support from fans like Tsai-kos whose love can know no bounds.

sj-macro, mahalo to you and all who helped capture the sweet sendoff for Kristin. curveball, fellow Tsai-kos – (((hugs))) !

Redskins Coach Blache wisdom – from the Redskins’ Official Blog:
    http://blog.redskins.com/

“Blache stayed on-message the entire time — “Coaching is teaching,” he said, “My specialty is teaching. My guys have their test on national TV every Sunday” — and largely delivered that message without entertaining stories about hunting and what-not. Mostly. Except for the story he said he tells his players about how dealing with criticism is like a frog climbing a water tower.

I’m paraphrasing, but essentially the story dealt with a whole bunch of “little green frogs clinging to a water tower.” As they all tried to climb up, people at the bottom shouted how they couldn’t possibly make it up — and sure enough, one by one they fell off. Except for one frog who finally made it up, and when the people asked how he had pulled that off, didn’t give any answer.

“The only frog to make it to the top was deaf,” Blache said. “He couldn’t hear all of the people telling him he could not do it. Sometimes who you’re around, your friends, you have to be deaf. So many people try to pull you down because they don’t believe in you or they’re afraid of success.”

“…Steelers here, huh? FedEx will be half Pittsburgh fans, half Redskins fan in a foul mood about it. Got Mace? Defending champions and all though—Steelers won’t be up for this one unless they lay an egg in their opener. Stay close, maybe grab an lead early. Maybe Zorn turns Brennan loose against the scrubs with Kelly, Thomas and Davis to play with. Good shot at a W…”

Just finally got around to reading all the posts for today. Quite a heated discussion about Men’s BB et al. If you’re really animate about the subject try and e-mail the Athletics Dept. directly instead of getting into head-butting matchups with other bloggers here who disagree with your opinion.

IMO, giving Nash the 1+1 extension was politically the correct thing to do regardless of your appraisal of Nash’s performance to date. The last thing we want is a lame-duck coach just trying to salvage what’s left before being shown the door. Also recruiting likely would have come to a standstill as well. Hypotheticals are just that, hypotheticals, so I won’t even bother prognosticating how things could have been.

Year 3 will be pivotal for Nash if he wants to keep his job. Another lackluster performance and even I will be on the bandwagon asking for his departure.

    Ronnie #71:

The nearest airport from the University of Idaho is actually Pullman, WA (~10 miles away and home of Washington State, but you probably already knew that 🙂 ). However I think it would be cheaper to fly into Spokane since that airport has the full gamut of major air carriers, whereas the only airline that flies in and out of Pullman is Alaska Air.

I think ST covered the airports near Ruston in his post #166 (Shreveport and Monroe). That area is mighty expensive to fly into (and out of).

FYI: Allegiant Airlines flies non-stop between Vegas and Shreveport 2-3 times per week, usually with airfares ranging between $79-$129 one-way if you book far enough in advance. Couple it with some cheapie Southwest fare and you could probably save some good $$$. Just a thought.

you gotta really love the warriors to follow them to ruston and have lots of time on your hands because its go to be a very long trip…

  321. Committed Road Warrior April 2, 2009 1:10 am

    Ralph:

Agreed. That’s why you won’t see me making the trip to Ruston, especially given that the game is gonna be on a Wednesday. I think 99club might be the nearest Tsaiko to Ruston, and even he is quite a ways out.

  329. Garret April 2, 2009 5:01 am

Feature article on Michelle Wie in the LA Times.

Michelle Wie says she has stopped dwelling on the past.

She’s satisfied with another passing quarter at Stanford: A’s and Bs in engineering, neuroscience, art and Korean drama.

Wie said she and caddie Tim Vickers mapped out the 18th green, including Poppie’s Pond, so she could jump in the deepest part if she wins this year’s tournament.

“It’ll probably turn out to be a really ugly one,” said Wie, whose first-round tee time is 8:01 a.m. today at the 10th hole of the Dinah Shore Tournament Course. “But I don’t really care as long as I get to.”

Wie’s parents showed signs of their involvement in small ways when she talked with reporters. While Wie flipped through her cellphone before her news conference, her mother asked if she wanted her to hold the phone once the conference began. After Wie signed autographs for 10 kids outside the media center, her father motioned her over and told her to “come this way.”

“She’s satisfied with another passing quarter at Stanford: A’s and Bs in engineering, neuroscience, art and Korean drama”.

    Korean drama?
LOL. We might have seen a few unrehearsed scenes on the links.

Nash and her contracts are just the mysterious for each of us.

  335. Digital SLR April 2, 2009 10:34 pm

There is a one-year option in addition to the extension for the 2010-11 season if certain performance standards are met. If Hawaii appears in the postseason or wins 18 games in either of the next two seasons Nash receives the extra one-year option for 2011-12.

Nash is entering the final year of his original three-year contract estimated at about $240,000 a season.

The extension gives Nash support for his recruiting efforts for the 2009-10 season.
