Tomey will provide a boost

Through the years there have been interesting sorts attending UH football practices — Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Walter Payton, Da Braddahs,Chris Mortensen,  Fresno State head coach Pat Hill …

But whenever Dick Tomey showed up, people were on their best behavior, sort of like when a parent shows up at school. Everybody speaks of Tomey’s motivational ability, but his greater power is the aura of respect he commands. June Jones based practice and travel schedules on Tomey ideas. Greg McMackin often praises Tomey’s innovations. Anybody who can make guys walk on hot coals has that It factor.

With Tomey’s hiring as special teams coordinator, the Warriors will be a better team.

* * * * *

At the WAC preview in San Jose a few years, a reporter/blogger was making his way through the hospitality room. He bumped into a table, where the commissioner’s glass of red wine was resting. The wine spilled on Tomey’s pants and shoes.

And that’s why it’s never good to mix business and pleasure.

Guarantee cause Coach Tomey is known for a aggressive defense an our young Coordinators mostly Aranda should soak in the knowledge from Mcmackin an Coach Tomey who are both known for D!!!

    Welcome Back Coach Tomey!
    Espically to our Warrior Ohana!

    Good Job Mac!
    Go Warriors

I remember the press conference when Dick Tomey announced he was leaving for Arizona. With tears in his eyes he said being head coach at the University of Hawaii was not a job but a mission. Our Special Teams will be on a mission this coming year, count on it.

  3. Garret February 17, 2011 9:02 am

Welcome back to UH, Coach Tomey!

  7. Garret February 17, 2011 9:08 am

For those excusing the performance of UH’s special teams by saying that UH has a lack of depth, I’m predicting that we will see an *amazing* improvement with UH’s special teams…and that special teams would have been far better last season under Coach Tomey with the same personnel.

UH was *last* in the WAC for kickoff returns last season
UH was *8th* in the WAC for punt returns last season (#111 in the country, 1 spot ahead of Idaho in the national rankings)

Forget about the horrible performance UH has on special teams in the national rankings, comparing UH’s performance to the rest of the WAC is highly relevant because UH should be able compete with the rest of the WAC. UH was good compared to the WAC on offense and defense but a “lack of depth” caused UH to struggle on special teams against teams like NMSU, SJSU, and Idaho?

Watch the turnaround that UH will have on special teams under Coach Tomey. It will be amazing because he will not accept mediocrity on his special teams units.

  8. Old Diver February 17, 2011 9:13 am

    Garret:

Of course you were referring to me but let me say this. While I believe Special Teams play is related to a lack of depth coaching and motivation are factors also. And one last note, we probably had one of the toughest schedules in the WAC. I’m sure that had something to do with the stats.

Oh no problem Old Driver! We are all fans. We are all part of the Warrior Ohana so it’s no biggie. But just wanted to let people remember of who we have sometimes we take it for granted.

  24. Derek February 17, 2011 10:19 am

To me let’s not compare how we do in the WAC or the MWC. We should be thinking national rankings. We already are in the national rankings as far as passing, total offense, receiving yards, and scoring. We want to aspire to be in the top 25 in defense and also in special teams. Look at Boise St. and TCU. They are good in all 3 phases. Mark my words, if we are high in the national rankings statistically we will be conference champs and in the national rankings in the polls too. Do you think Boise St. and TCU are setting their sights on their conference. Yes, but they are thinking about the BCS bowls too. We are not at that stage, yet. Improving our special teams by leaps and bounds greatly improve our chances to try to get better. With Coach Tomey, we have HOPE. As Richard Widmark said in a war movie, “hope is the mother of all things.” Do you think Tomey will unleash John Hardy-Tuliau to block kicks and break Mike Akiu’s record? Can he find the next Semeri Ulufale on kickoff coverage? Can he find the next Dana McLemore for punt retuns? Can he find the next Chad Owens for kickoff returns? Don’t sell Tomey short. This guy is a smooth operator and been around the block. If he can get Blane Gaison, Jesse Sapolu, and Joe Onosai to stay at home he can get the top Hawaii players to commit to UH and play for the home team.

Coach McMackin is a very smart guy and knows what we need to be the Miami Fla. of the West.

  25. Markazulu February 17, 2011 10:20 am

    acts about Coach Tomey
Tomey had been the head coach at the University of Hawaii and the University of Arizona. From 1977 to 1986, he led his teams at Hawaii to their first in season top-20 Associated Press ranking in 1981, and their first AP first-team All-American player, Al Noga. In 1981, Tomey also earned Western Athletic Conference “Coach of the Year” honors.

In 1987, he became head coach at Arizona, earning Pac 10 “Coach of the Year” honors in 1992. During his tenure, he coached five future NFL first-round draft choices, 20 All-Americans, and 43 Pac-10 first team players. His best teams were in the mid-1990s, highlighted by a tenacious “Desert Swarm” defense. He led Arizona to the only two 10-win seasons in school history, highlighted by a 12–1 season in 1998, in which they finished 3rd in both major polls—the highest ranking in school history.

In 2003, he was an assistant defensive coach for the San Francisco 49ers, and in 2004 he helped lead the Texas Longhorns to an 11–1 season and their first-ever Rose Bowl appearance and victory as the assistant head coach and defensive ends coach.

An he has a 183–145–7 overall in the NCAA.

Marvelous selection by MAC. Our secondary and STs will rock.

Lol. Rich Miano now has his high school coach (cal lee) and college coach (tomey) coaching on the same side of the ball. great storyline.

  34. Derek February 17, 2011 11:13 am

Two of the players that Tomey coached are Teddy Bruschi and Chris McAlister. And don’t forget Falaniko Noga. What a stud. And one of my all-time favorite, Itai Sataua. Tomey had him play nose guard on goal line situations and Sataua was only 6’1 and 200 lbs. Amazing. Maybe Tomey will make the next great Farrington High School special teams player at UH, Justin Vele. He’s a big hitter.

Anyone know if today’s Wahine bb game is being streamed?

  68. Derek February 17, 2011 1:09 pm

I’m hoping the Wahine are relaxed on the road and get some big punch out of Robinson, Duhalongsod-Kaleimamahu, and Enrique. They are all due. Maybe too much pressure at home trying to prove themselves. Just stay relaxed and stay focused and things will come. These women take some healthy cuts at the plate so if they make contact, it’s bye bye baby. Let’s stay patient. You know the top 5-6 batters in the lineup will hit and get on base. If the bottom third of the lineup get hot, the Wahine will be awesome. That means Nakao, Zamona, Pagaduan, Robinson, Makani, Jensen, or anybody else in the 7th, 8th, or 9th batter. Ricketts and Parnaby just need to throw strikes and not walk a lot of people. The air is thinner up in Vegas to they should keep the ball down as much as possible.

  69. Michigan Warrior February 17, 2011 1:09 pm

So far, this off season has provided lots of smiles and even greater anticipation of what may be ahead. Da Green Machine got all da parts… now to put it together…

Off topic… the dealer has had our car for three days now, and they still can’t find what the electronic problem is with a car they made!!! Spooky!

    Something else I’m wondering about…
In these difficult times where everyone is calling for budget cuts…
If the UH president is still not living in the refurbished College Hill residence, does it really make sense for the Board of Regents to continue to pay rent for that Waikiki condo?

While in the Army, we had barracks we were assigned to live in. If we opted to live elsewhere, it came out of our own pockets. Granted, $60k per year may not be much, (when dealing with the budget UH deals with), but if we’re bleeding these amounts all over the place, it all adds up. I mean, $5k per month could be used for backlogged repairs or other necessary items on campus! I’m sure the professors wouldn’t mind throwing this amount into a hat and splitting it amongst themselves!

  70. Ralph February 17, 2011 1:17 pm

oops forgot to post, Na Wahine vs Utah tomorrow, friday, at 11:15 am vegas time.

  71. Ralph February 17, 2011 1:20 pm

the Utah sb game is on game tracker.

The feds shut down channelsurfing.net and a few other sites. Got to find new sources for streaming video.

  72. tommui February 17, 2011 1:21 pm

As I understand it, the reason why the UH President is not living at the College Hill residence is because her significant other is handicapped and unable to climb the stairs to get to the living space upstairs. The place could be modified by elevator but that would costs much more than 60k.

Perhaps what should be done is to sell College Hill or, if there is objection to that, make the modifications per ADA specifications or convert the bottom floor for bedrooms and have all receptions etc over at the East-West Center.

  73. Ralph February 17, 2011 1:22 pm

wbb on La tech site: CBS sports video, got to log in, so I suspect you got to purchase the video streaming.

  74. Ralph February 17, 2011 1:25 pm

To make the College Hill home ADA compliant would cost the state $1 million in materials and union labor cost. Most of the cost is labor. As reported on SA, the bedrooms are on the second floor.

    Garret:

Of course you were referring to me but let me say this. While I believe Special Teams play is related to a lack of depth coaching and motivation are factors also. And one last note, we probably had one of the toughest schedules in the WAC. I’m sure that had something to do with the stats.

    Old Diver,

I actually remember at least 3 different people saying similar things, so my comment was not aimed specifically towards you. You bring up motivation and coaching as valid factors also, which I agree with, but I’ve seen others solely attribute the problem to depth. So, my comment didn’t apply to you as much as others.

UH’s schedule was *not* as difficult as the multiple WAC schools who played bodybag games. For example, SJSU opened last season at then #1 Alabama, then played at Wisconsin. They also played at Utah as part of their nonconference schedule! Also, they had to play at UH…which is a lot harder than UH facing the last place WAC team (SJSU) in Hawaii.

    Punt returns
SJSU #59 in the country (2.2x more yards per return than UH)
    UH #111 in the country

    Kickoff returns
    SJSU #76 in the country
    UH #94 in the country

  79. Garret February 17, 2011 1:38 pm

BYU dumped their game with La Tech for the coming season (so much for their agreement with the WAC) and replaced that game with a game at Cowboys Stadium against TCU.

The Cougars’ schedule in their first year of football independence will feature the Horned Frogs, ESPN announced on Thursday, saying it will televise a BYU-TCU meeting on Oct. 28 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. MDT and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.

The game will replace a scheduled BYU game at Louisiana Tech on Nov. 5, meaning the Cougars will still have 12 games on their schedule in 2011.

TCU coach Gary Patterson, when he learned BYU was exploring independence last summer, said he would not play the Cougars again.

BYU didn’t have the TV rights to the game at La Tech, so by canceling that game and playing a neutral site game against TCU, BYU will get $1.2 mil from ESPN vs. $0 from a road game.

I feel badly for La Tech, since they now have a puka in their schedule for the coming season and they lost one of their big home game sellers for the season.

Note that BYU could have used the Hawaii Exception to play 13 games, so they could have added TCU without dumping their La Tech game. However, BYU said that they do not want to play 13 games in a season. In other words, the Hawaii Exception is worth *nothing* to BYU.

Yea- just filled out my order form for the Wahine Softball Booster shirt. Not to late to join the Booster Club!

  87. Kazz February 17, 2011 2:44 pm

    Some #s.

Rainbow Wahine face off against Utah tomorrow. Senior outfielder Jasey Jensen squares off against her former team.

Utah is 3-2 with wins against Ole Miss 10-0 (mercy rule after 5), Western Michigan 6-0, and Arizona State 3-1 after 8 innings. Losses are to Arizona 3-8 and to Oklahoma State 3-5.

Utah, as a team is batting .222, has three players hitting above .300. Tia Palanui is batting .583 and slugging 1.417 and hit 3 homers with 8 RBIs this past weekend.

Will speed against the Wahine be a factor? Not sure, maybe not? Over five games, the Lady Utes are 4-4 on stolen base attempts.

Utah kept their overall errors to a minimum against good competition with 6 errors over 5 games.

Junior pitcher Generra Nielson had an ERA of 2.85 with 23 Ks.

    ==========

Rainbow Wahine are 5-0 with wins against Southern Utah (2x), UC Davis (2x), and a nailbiter against Texas State. Not the best competition, but it is what it is.

We are batting .254 as a team, have two players batting over .300 (Majam and Gonzalez). Kelly Majam is batting .600, slugging 1.200 and has one home run with 4 RBIs. Melissa Gonzalez is batting .333, slugging .917 with 2 homers and 5 RBIs.

Will we try to steal as much as we can??? Looks like it. The Wahine are a perfect 8-8 for stolen base attempts this past weekend.

Errors were also kept at a minimum of 4 overall over five games.

Kaia Parnaby and Stephanie Ricketts both split duties and had a combined ERA of 0.44 with a total of 39 Ks (25 for Ricketts and 14 for Parnaby).

    ==========

Last season we went down to the wire with Utah in the same tournament, and Rainbow Wahine outfielder Jasey Jensen got a home run off Ricketts for Utah last year. We eventually won 9-8.

Again both teams look fairly even, but Utah is coming off playing against good competition to start the season 3-2.

Utah will be playing Oregon at 9am and will have to immediately play us again at 11:15-ish. This will be our first game of the tournament.

  88. Kazz February 17, 2011 2:52 pm

Forgot to add to the above that when both teams appear to this even in the stats, their opposing competition has almost no real bearing on what the real story of tomorrow will be.

It’s all about minimizing our errors and being patient at the plate. Either Ricketts or Parnaby will be in control and as it was early LAST season, we need to provide run support for both of them.

The hits will come along in time.

  97. RupertDaStupert February 17, 2011 3:42 pm

30 years ago, I accidently wandered into the UH football coaches offices while looking to buy a press guide. I accidently bumped into Dick Tomey and before I could say ‘I’m sorry’, Dick beat me to it by saying ‘sorry I bumped into you’ when it was I who bumped into him. What a classy guy and I was a fan of his forever from then on. I don’t think a former head coach ever returned as an assistant coach. That shows he is not full of ego. He is class personified!!!The UH team can only get BETTER!!!! WITH him on it. I wouldn’t be surprised if June Jones returns one day. He loves Hawaii just as much as Dick Tomey. God Bless you Dick. You have honored us with your presence in the past and choose to honor us again.
    Thank you!!!!!!!!!

    Garret,

Although you’ve been writing about it for awhile, to see the demise of value of the Hawaii Exemption come to actual fruition is quite distressing.

    d1shima,

The sad thing is that ESPN gave BYU a contract where they can get an extra $1.2 mil from TV if they added a home game for their 13th game of the season. Plus, BYU makes more than $2 mil in ticket sales for each home game. So, BYU is saying that they feel that a bye week is worth more than $3.2 mil to them…UH’s opponents in the WAC and MWC makes *far less* than BYU for a home game, which is why it is no surprise that they haven’t automatically taken advantage of the Hawaii Exception lately either.

RE Coach Tomey and SpT – I remember how a couple years ago Coach Mack described his process – and now I can see it coming to fruition… Defense, Offense, and now Sp. Teams is the center of attention with a special Coach to not only develop the players but also the younger coaches.
    Systematic, intelligent, inspirational. Pretty cool.

Wan’t too long ago people were looking for heads to roll.

  108. Garret February 17, 2011 3:57 pm

One thing forgotten in the stats is that UH had an awful habit of getting penalties or being forced to waste timeouts because there were too many people on the field on special teams. It was like an epidemic early in the season! It cost UH a significant number of timeouts, gave points to the opponent on one notable occasion that comes to mind, and really hurt UH in a couple of games early in the season. It almost cost UH a win if I remember correctly.

The punt return for a TD in the USC game completely changed the game and cost UH a chance at that win. But that is FAR more excusable to me than having to repeatedly take timeouts of be penalized for having 12 men on the field when the other team is trying a FG or extra point.

Depth could explain some problems. Only *coaching* can be pointed to when the team repeatedly has 12 people on the field for special teams. Players might make a mental mistake ONCE on special teams under Coach Tomey…but I bet the same mistake won’t happen over and over!

  109. NorthShoreFan February 17, 2011 3:57 pm

  148. hawaiiansun February 17, 2011 6:47 pm

Dick Tomey brings fun to the STs. I dont mean that disparagingly, he really does make playing on STs special. You can bet with wedge-blocking dismantled on KO returns Tomey will be creating his own H1 express lanes to the opposition’s zone. But, his path may not be conventionally signed.
Get ready for reverses, passes and laterals. Should we kick, beware the onside-kick or instructions to kick to the flag on either side. Out of the endzone takes away an opportunity to cause a fumble. Oh, boy.
When we punt we may run….or pass. When we kick a FG, we may score 6. And watch-out Boise State, Warrior extra-points-after-TD will never be automatic, Tomey, will go for 2 at least once before the season ends. But he will make opponents think, once a game.

No more John runs when the STs are on the field. You may miss the winning play.
Warriors be ready, and expect to be coached, by anything except vanilla.

  149. Ralph February 17, 2011 6:54 pm

K State goes to the Devaney Center to face the Cornhuskers women and seek their 800 collegiate basketball victory. K State holds a 62% winning percentage in all games played at home and away.

Coach DTD needs to up her recruiting to build upon what Coach Goo did several years ago and win and win often to put a face to UH Na Wahine basketball. Only La Tech in the WAC has achieved this level of play that we see in other power conferences.

It’s pretty sickening to see all the turnovers by the Wahine. It’s been that way the entire season. To me, that’s poor coaching, and poor fundamentals. If you don’t take care of the ball, you ain’t gonna win. Ladies, you have found the enemy. You. Maybe they should mosey on down to mamby pamby lane and try to get some self confidence, you …….!!!!!!!

Maybe Gib Arnold should tell Takahara-Dias about what John Wooden preached, which is
“Be quick, but don’t hurry.” Sound advice. Play under control.

The drought could cause wheat prices to increase significantly if China has to import food to feed more than a billion people–wheat prices are already at record highs and are partially responsible for the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. China’s Shandong province (where they get a large amount of their country’s food) has only received 15% of its normal rain levels so their land is drying out and their crops are dying:

New Zealand is trying to contain a measles outbreak, with their public health officials worried that they will not be able to stop the spread of the disease. For every 1000 cases there are typically 1 death and 100 hospital admissions, and the highly contagious disease may have already infected more than 300 people:

It is amazing to think that San Diego county has a 10.1% unemployment rate…and there are around 6,000 unfilled IT jobs in San Diego County and 2,000 job openings in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The unemployment rate in San Diego is 14.2% for high school dropouts and 4.2% for people with bachelor’s degrees:

Re: 156. Check out the video of Tomey’s press conference on UH web site. Tomey sounds as sharp as ever. Already met many of the players this morning; says it’s important to get to know every player’s name; says he will open his home to players during the season; says it’ll be neat coaching the kids of some of his former players (mentioned London Sapolu and Beau Yap by name, and also mentioned “Satele’s son.”) Talked about helping to recruit in Hawaii and Samoa. He sounds eager to get started. A solid choice by McMackin.

  174. Garret February 17, 2011 9:39 pm

Want an example of Oceanic’s plan to keep UH sports off of Dish and DirecTV? Time Warner (who owns Oceanic) signed a deal to get exclusive rights to Lakers games…estimates are that the TV deal is worth $3 bil. After next season, fans in LA who want to see the Lakers play on TV will have to subscribe to an expensive sports tier on Time Warner. Dish and DirecTV subscribers will not get to see the Lakers play! The Lakers have been on free TV at least for part of each season…Time Warner is ending that.

Oceanic already owns the TV rights to UH sports and they sure aren’t paying $3 bil to UH for the rights. Oceanic will use UH sports just like how they are using the Lakers and *no* Dish or DirecTV subscribers will get to watch UH play. Time Warner analog cable subscribers will not get to see UH sports. Basic digital cable subscribers won’t get to see UH sports. Get out your credit cards if you want to see UH because Oceanic will be after your money…

As for #174- that kind of old-economy thinking is exactly why I left Oceanic years ago. The spirit of the age is to share information and get a little money from a lot of people. The age of exclusives and gated communities of every kind is ending soon.

so joston thomas misses two practices now. for “personal reasons” his coach explains.

some say its over playing time,
some say they were sitting behind the bench and heard thomas mouth off to his coach. some say he became a dissinterested member as the game wore on.
some say he played only 9 minutes.
some say its because he constantly turns the ball over.

    i say…man up. be a man.

Hmmm…I probably won’t bring this up again since I am not a travel agent anymore and am doubtful to attend as a single traveller… but, 25 years ago as a rookie travel agent, I was tasked/tested to set up a small group tour to a neighbor island for the boss. So…

    1) book the same plane or flights arriving within 30 minutes of each other.
    2) book a block of hotel rooms
    3) book a few 9-passenger vans (7-pass if not much gear)
    4) Book the activity venue(s)

    Let’s see…
    BigHiloFan2 & Big Isle Tsai-kos have #4 covered, or will 🙂
    Internet for #1 nowadays
We know anyone with influence for #2 group room rates? 🙄
Can share van rental cost if pax count known, preferably staying same hotel.

#72… Tommui… thanks for the clarification on the College Hill ADA compliancy. Seems we have lots of buildings throughout that are not ADA compliant.

#74… Ralph… $1mil to make College Hill ADA compliant seems crazily steep… like the millions extra it will cost to resurface Aloha Stadium. I remember watching an Extreme Home Makeover episode in which they installed an elevator into a house for a family that has a wheelchair-driving kid, along with fixes to other necessary areas such as the bathroom. Amazing how a small crew could get the work done in less than seven days! And, I’d be even more amazed if the donated home cost over $1mil to build, after adding in all materials and labor. I mean, we’re just talking about bringing a newly refurbished home up to ADA standards, not building a whole new residence from scratch.

No mind me… just wondering out loud.

    Davone Bess
On how he got good hands!

In high school one of the main things my coach emphasized was catching the ball with your hands. Every time me or one of my receiver teammates caught the ball with our bodies he made us run two laps or do 50 push-ups right on the spot. After a while it just became natural. I go out every day with a couple of my other teammates and just catch the ball with the JUGS machine, every day. It’s all about repetition, so the more repetition we get, the more natural it becomes. We probably catch, in the morning before practice, 125, 150 balls. And that’s not including practice. During practice, who knows how many balls we catch.”

    RE: #191
Bighilofan2 — I don’t have a plan because I am doubtful for attending–and I don’t want to say more right now because it would put certain people on the spot. But there is something I can help with since you need to know who and how many Tsai-kos are attending.

Very similar to the Tsaiko-Vegas logistics page (which has name, hotel, and ETA), I will assemble that info provided it is emailed to me or posted on the blog. It occurs to me that the logistics of get-togethers here is the same as Vegas, except that we have more personal resources here. To get the “look and feel” of what I mean, take a look at this year’s Tsaiko-Vegas #3 page at

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2011.html

I will make something similar in the Events Calendar section of my Tsai-ko page (click on my name above ) unless it really mushrooms and requires it’s own page. 🙂

So please post here if you plan to be in Hilo April 9 (Big Island Tsai-kos too) and tell # in your party, hotel name, and ETA.

#184 MW renovations are costly using union labor, ADA requirements means the facility must be accessible to the handicap, or however people in this category are correctly described, elevator for second floor, easy access of wheel chair, etc. Nothing monumental, but the labor cost is high. Each union wants a stake if the work can be partitioned for them, a worker won’t pick up his or her trash, he calls in the laborer union to remove his or her debris.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I as well as my guys appeared to be studying the nice guidelines from your web blog and so all of a sudden I got a horrible feeling I never expressed respect to the website owner for those strategies. My ladies ended up for that reason very interested to study them and now have in truth been taking pleasure in those things. We appreciate you being so helpful and for making a choice on this kind of fabulous tips millions of individuals are really needing to discover. My very own sincere regret for not expressing gratitude to earlier.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
