Times have changed

In 2009, at the request (pleading?) of Fresno State, UH moved its kickoffs for home WAC games an hour earlier, to 5:05 p.m. That allowed visiting teams a chance to make the redeye flights that night, saving them the cost of an extra night’s hotel stay.

Last year, based on a survey, the kickoffs were moved to 5:35 p.m.

Now, based on another survey, the kickoffs will be at 6:05 p.m. this season, when rival Fresno State plays at Aloha Stadium. Of course, in the interim, Fresno State decided to leave the WAC, the WAC demanded that Fresno State pay a $5 million exit fee, Fresno State refused, a reduced price fee of $900,000 was agreed upon with FS leaving in 2012, and then UH announced it was leaving the WAC. Coincidence? Nah.

Here’s a 2009 story from the Fresno State Web site, when UH was in a more hospitable mood:

FRESNO, Calif. – In tough economic times, it’s nice when rival schools can work together to help meet budget challenges.

That’s the case as Hawaii officials agreed to a request by Fresno State to move the Oct. 10 football game at Aloha Stadium to 5:05 p.m. HT (8 p.m. PT).

In doing so, that will allow the Fresno State football team to catch a late night flight from Honolulu to return to California after the game instead of spending the night in a hotel, which will be a considerable savings to the Fresno State budget. Had the game not been changed, the Bulldog team would not have had enough time to catch the last flights from Honolulu the night of the game and had originally planned to spend Saturday night in Honolulu and fly home early Sunday morning.

“We are grateful to Jim Donavan and Coach McMackin for working with us,” said head coach Pat Hill. “As everyone knows, the Hawaii trip is always tough and when we have to stay overnight after the game, it not only costs more but it make for a long travel day on Sunday and we don’t get back to Fresno until Sunday night. All in all, this is a great situation for us not only from a budget standpoint but also to help the guys get some rest on Sunday and be fresh and ready for classes on Monday morning.”

The team will be departing on two different flights between 10:30-11 p.m., which brings them home Sunday at around noon.

Hawaii has agreed to make that accommodation to several other schools after Fresno State made the initial request. The original start times were 6:05 p.m. HT.

“Initially, Fresno State expressed interest in moving the start time so they could catch the red-eye flight back to the West Coast,” Hawaii Athletics Director Jim Donovan said. “After consulting with our facilities staff and Scott Chan at Aloha Stadium, we agreed to accommodate them and offer that same time slot to our other three WAC home opponents. Our intention is to revert back to the 6:05 p.m. kickoff when everyone’s budget gets better in the next year or two. However, if we receive positive feedback from this switch, we may consider keeping the 5:05 p.m. kickoff in the future.”

well, 6:05 is better than 6:30!!! Look at it that way…

Don’t think than any California state school’s budget has improved. Don’t they still have furloughs?

  4. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2011 7:19 am

    By the way, didn’t know there was a 2:55 time difference: “…to 5:05 p.m. HT (8 p.m. PT).”

  5. TJ Kauai April 12, 2011 7:21 am

I like the 5:05 kickoff time. This Way the outer Island fans can catch the 9:45 flight back home and don’t need to stay the night on Oahu.

I wonder if Aloha Stadium attendees took a survey on whether they preferred the Hawaii Bowl to be played at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve or 6 p.m. on Dec. 26?

Question: Do Hawaii high school athletes pay a fee to play per sport?

I ask because in the bay area where I coach players are required to pay $100 per sport to subsidize the athletic department.

  16. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2011 7:50 am

I’m not sure why schools are always one of the first areas targeted, unless that’s the way to spur the most outrage.

  17. BG April 12, 2011 7:50 am

Attended my final (for now) Monday MBA class last nite…4 hrs, once a week, 18 mo. Now I’ll be able to see an episode of 5-0 and watch Monday Nite Football again! lol Looking forward to catching some of the softball games when Na Wahine get back, although the price of gas now-a-days might put a crimp on too many trips into town.

My classes were a blast…check out what some of my classmates were about. One was a former UH cornerback, another started a community football league for kids on Oahu that has 800 kids involved, another was an army commander, then there was a college level gymnast and swimmer, and the list goes on…had 9 fascinating folks in my final course.

  22. BG April 12, 2011 7:58 am

Wow PONO! @ $100 per sport, it could get expensive for the multi-sport athlete. Imagine if get plenty kids in the family! Compared to the UH athletic fee, the UH fee is manini.

  23. Pauoa Boy April 12, 2011 7:59 am

Art Laurel looks to have gotten a little bigger this year…good for him. McBride looks like kind of a tweener for the Elephant position but from what I hear, he plays bigger than his size. Lots of speed though which is nice to have cause speed kills… What about a guy like Siaki Cravens who has the size and speed to be another hybrid guy I think. Anyway, hope Vaughn and Kaniela heal up cause them is two big bodies we’ll need throughout the season. It’s cool to know that these guys can stay humble off the field, but on the field I like em nasty and deranged. I like em insane and hungry to kill anyone with the ball in their hands… I like guys who hit through people, hits so vicious and violent that internally their bones are exploding from the collision (all legal hits of course)…

    Happy B-Day DPK…

  26. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2011 8:03 am

Anyway, back to my original post:

What I liked about the initial move to 5 p.m. (other than more time to write) was that the AD listened to a request, found it reasonable, figured we’re nice people in Hawaii, and made a decision. No surveys. No committees.

That was refreshing. The AD is a smart man, with a background in business and marketing. So when he makes a decision, it’s like, sure, why not?

What I don’t like is when it takes committees and surveys and meetings after meetings to announce a decision.

In deciding to go back to 6 p.m., what the AD should have said was: “Look, I’ve got kids who play sports, so I know how busy it is on a Saturday. And I’m at the games at 5, and I know how hot it is. I don’t need a survey to tell me to move it to another time.”

And he he should just do it. Because he can, and it’s the right thing to do. That’s why he’s the boss. Bosses don’t defer.

  27. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2011 8:05 am

    PB:

You’re right, I think Cravens also can play the hybrid position.

  28. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2011 8:11 am

I can understand the financial restraints that require asking players to subsidize their sports. But that also leads to expectations. Now there’s an entitlement that everyone should be able to play, because everyone is asked to pay. It’s easier to tell a non-paying bench warmer: “Sorry, couldn’t get you into this game because it was too close.”

  29. Pauoa Boy April 12, 2011 8:11 am

Anyway, lots of stuff coming up that I’m pretty excited about… Recruiting for the mens and womens Basketball teams, NFL Draft, NBA playoffs, our newly signed football recruits enrolling in school, etc… lots to look forward to on the sports side of things…

So Coach Gib has a couple guys on his radar… we got Gerry Blakes and Ronnie Stevens signed, two athletic guys that can run… Dillon Biggs if he signs would be great too, lots of upside to his game and very athletic, just needs to hit the weight room and drink some Muscle Milk… So Pierre Jackson is gone… I like the point guards from the Illinois area and that Nevada Prep school, cause I know they are very well coached. I also like that one shooting guard Colin something. That guy can drain from everywhere and has great body control on the move in squaring up his body. I think he’d be more dangerous than Zane Johnson if we could get him… Other than that Pierre Jacksons teammate forget the name would be good too. I dunno about the Euro PG, cause he seems he’d be solid but as far as athleticism and quickness, from what I hear it’s not his strong points to his game. Need PG’s that got quick feet and can move cause defensively guys like Hiram and Bobby Miles would get taken off the dribble too many times…IMO

  30. Pauoa Boy April 12, 2011 8:16 am

Actually there are a couple others I can think of that would be good hybrid Elephant guys. Siaki comes to mind because of his size and quickness off the edge. He showed a good intial first step and burst to the ball in some games last year. Hope he gets on the field more in the DLine rotation cause he is quick.

  31. SteveM April 12, 2011 8:27 am

    Good morning everyone!

6:05 pm start time next season? Better…that only leaves you 45 minutes with the sun in your eyes for the first game! Might encourage more people in the mauka stands to take their seats before the 2nd quarter so security doesn’t have to keep chasing people off the ramps. Might even sell a few more tickets. Might sell more if game time was 6:35 pm or later.

ST, you can have my seat for the opener.

Remember, no umbrellas or parasols allowed in the stadium.

Thanks ST and everyone. So, I’m assuming all game start times will be the same unless otherwise noted/stipulated.

  34. Derek April 12, 2011 8:37 am

PB, the S. Idaho player you’re thinking about is Darius Smith, a one time UConn player. Saw his stats at S. Idaho and he was overshadowed by Pierre Jackson. Jackson averaged more than 19 points per game, while Smith scored under 10 points per game. Jackson by far is a much better shooter and overall player, even though he is listed at 5’10”. As Al alluded to, Jackson committed to Baylor. He would have been a good PG for us, but he gone now and he’s a JC too. Anthony Odunsi, if Gib can land him, is 6’4″ and a Sr. in high school so he has a lot of upside. Check Dayton’s wedsite today.

  35. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 8:48 am

    ST,

I think the reason JD relied on surveys and meetings is that it would lend more credibility to his decision. After all, an athletic director is not an emperor…

My wife is a teacher with LAUSD, she says that classes sizes get bigger, there are no more janitors to take out the class or clean the rooms, etc. But being with her for so long I have realized one thing: You can never make teachers happy. First it was there pay, they weren’t getting paid enough (which most people agree), then they said they are not getting enough funding (probably because the money is going to their pensions), now they don’t like being rated. I argue with my wife all the time about these things because she likes to believe what her union tells her. She has boycotted the LA Times because the union didn’t like the teachers name being in the paper.

In the Hermosa Beach school district, they ask the parents of each child to “donate” $1000 per year to offset budget cuts. So if you have 2 kids in the Hermosa Beach school district, that’s $2000 a year just to send your kids to school. Not to mention all the fund raisers that you have to do after that. I say it’s a donation, but if you don’t do it, I heard they put your name in a paper to show people who paid and who didn’t pay.

disagree athletes should be asked to pay for playing a sport. they sacrifice enough representing the school while maintaining academic standards.

this happened to me way back when. school had management problems so to make up the financial deficit decided to have each player in the various sports sell a bunch of ticket and if not sold went on their tuition. rest and myself was history.

  58. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2011 10:05 am

I think, unfortunately, that every action has a consequence.

Cut back on state workers, for instance, and the lines are longer for basic services, and unemployment has to supplement the non-worker.

Make students pay to play, and there will be more students who can’t afford to play. We can all agree that sports is a privilege, not a right, etc., etc., etc. But extra-curricular activities also serve a benefit to society. For instance, look at the implementation of the 2.0 rule in high school two decades ago. Good rule, we all would agree. If you take care of your studies, you get to earn the privilege of playing sports. But then there was no fallback for some kids who couldn’t make it gradewise. It’s no coincidence that, at that time, there was the rise of gang activity. Is it our obligation to, in essence, pay for aftercare of students? No, not legally. But sports builds esteem, develops friendships and good work habits, etc. Take that away, for some, and they have to look elsewhere to occupy their time, energy and, for some, aggressiveness.

  62. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2011 10:13 am

And, by the way, I think eventually charging admission for softball is going to kill the way it is now.

Title IX mandates that schools that receive federal funding must provide equal athletic opportunities. That’s why softball exists. It was never intended to be a money-maker. It’s a great way for the school to bond with the community. Entire youth teams can show up, giving players a chance too see role models in person, which foster interest in the sport. It makes more girls want to play longer, which increases the pool of talent, and will make the Rainbow Wahine better in the future. There will be a price to pay for treating sports like a business.

  63. Bulla April 12, 2011 10:13 am

Run Samson Run – Samson Anguay

    Starlight, Starbright – Darius Bright

On a sport-talk radio show, recently; a caller said he played football for Kahuku,

during 1999-2000 (if I remember correctly).

He said each kid paid $200.00, and that there were 90 kids in the program.

I didn’t pay attention to what else was said.

    FYI.

  67. Pomai April 12, 2011 10:35 am

#62 ST – Your right it would put a damper in the young kids coming to the games, so far this year we have had over 200 kids from the different leagues around the island come to the games, given them team pictures that they then have the girls sign after the game get their pictures taken with them and so on. Afraid if they charged admission that would all go away.

Plus, for us on the West Coast, 9pm kickoff is a long time to wait all day for football!

Admission, food sales, apparel, and anything you can think of selling is a source of revenue. UH softball, from what I have been reading, has not charged admission all these years. They have a following that continues to grow. Why change a good thing? You have to weigh to benefits and the consequences and not just think of $$$’s since softball was never a profit making sport.

    NCAA,

you have a point. I just think that if people like a certain sport, they’ll pay for it no matter what. Of course, if they are attending the games just because it is free, then attendance will decline if money is an object.

  88. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 11:00 am

Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DPK! Couldn’t happen to a nicer feller.

Condolences to Liz and her ohana!

  90. NCAA April 12, 2011 11:04 am

There are many UH sports to watch for free. As you can see, attendance is not about being free.

  92. warriorsun April 12, 2011 11:08 am

Coach Tony’s comment about quality in depth over quantity underscores a worthy point often missed when fans size up our teams with a laundry-list of endless prospects. However, coach has good reason to be fussy these days, the warriors DO have an abundance of quality on the interior defensive line for 2011. Prolly the best since #41 was President.

Well. since I have always thought that Tsai-kos on a cruise together would be the ultimate 7 day blog party, tailgate, cattle call, and karaoke call all combined–and we do not have to cook or clean–then I’ll answer here…

    BG:

    April 12th, 2011 at 10:05 am

    SteveM

Some of the May fares to Alaska have done WAY down. Especially for the Millenium even though its rated 5 star. Is the ship haunted or sumting? $600 for inside stateroom for a 7 nite cruise?

BG — not unusual in my limited 10 year observations. This is a one way cruise to/from Seward/Anchorage and usually combined with a 5+ day land tour package. Number of travelers on this combo cruise-tour may be lower in May due to the inland temperature and conditions.

The 20 May sailing is showing today at $565 inside. How much is the open jaw airfare for HNL-Vancouver and Anchorage-HNL, or vice versa?

Letseee–when does ST finish up in May? No bowling alley though, but has a rock climbing wall. 🙂

  110. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 11:58 am

  111. Kazz April 12, 2011 12:04 pm

Keyword is “EVENTUAL”. Charging admission for softball based on the numbers today is a mistake.

In fantasy land, if we’ve been seeing 1K + for EVERY home game, then it would be considered and Jim Donovan would have to go through a dragged out process to get permission from the BOR to charge admission for UH softball.

Admission would take about a season or maybe two to see admission getting charged and even then, one season could see a massive drop in interest from fans and then by the time admission comes into effect, it will be all for nothing.

I used to believe in charging admission for UH softball, but with the current facility and the infrastrucutre it’s in, it wouldn’t be justified and the team is NOT going to hit 150+ home runs every season to maintain the interest of a crowd of 1K+.

If an investment is made to really change the stadium from what it is to something comparable to the softball stadiums at Fresno or at Arizona State, then I can see admission being justified on a business standpoint.

If such allocations were to become reality then the full on press for Coach Coolen to deliver every season will be heavier and in tune with a salary raise.

  112. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 12:08 pm

    Kazz,

    what’s the average attendance now?

  113. el guapo April 12, 2011 12:22 pm

A dissenting view on why it might be good to charge a couple of buck for attendance.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez told the Wisconsin State Journal that when he served as an Iowa assistant, coach Hayden Fry saw incentive in charging for admission to the spring game.

“I can remember Hayden saying, ‘If it’s free, people think there’s no value in it,'” Alvarez said. “‘If you just charge $2, we’ll increase the crowd.’ Sure enough, that’s what happened.”

Hayden Fry, football coach and economic whiz.

Iowa, by the way, no longer charges for its spring game.

  114. al April 12, 2011 12:31 pm

  138. SteveM April 12, 2011 1:35 pm

jm2375 — maybe Fresno gets a hotel package deal with their chartered jet….

  139. Kazz April 12, 2011 1:39 pm

    Gigi,

Ferd’s article seems to indicate 700+ per home game. Well, that is probably the HIGH end number.

    I’d say we’ve been averaging 400-600.

People are in a FALSE sense that attendance has “severly” dropped since last season and people are citing the lack of home runs and whatnot.

The drop in attendance average is at some kind of severe low.

This is only because most people are stuck on the last three home series against Fresno State last season where there was standing room only and some forget that for the MOST of 2010 the stands were filled with 200-350 people for the majority at MOST.

The fact is that even with a decline in just home runs and with some losses at home, the softball program is still averaging a higher number of fans on AVERAGE from the beginning of this season to last weekend as compared to the same period of time from the beginning of 2010 to early April of 2010.

  140. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 1:40 pm

    d1,

we are Costco members, but are also considering Sam’s Club, because their gas pumps are never as crowded as Costco’s. Last week, hubby had to wait 15 minutes before a pump opened up at Costco Iwilei.

  141. NCAA April 12, 2011 1:40 pm

Ms. PowderPuff can’t cheer. That means she needs to be impartial, taking notes, typing, concentrating, or doing something for the home or visiting teams. Or she could be involved with the broadcast of the game and need to queue or direct media and equipment. Or she could be security.

  142. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 1:42 pm

    Kazz,

I wonder where Ferd got his figures from, then.

Do you think he was misled by the AD?

  143. d1shima April 12, 2011 1:48 pm

Waipio Costco gas lines not as long as Iwilei. Ever since Kapolei and PC Sam’s Club opened their gas stations hardly more than 2-3 deep waiting…natural disasters and island-wide power failures notwithstanding (Waipio Costco has their own generators).

  144. Dan-O April 12, 2011 1:52 pm

Gee….if they start charging HS kids to play sports. Damn….going get WAY more chili, huli-huli chicken, and portugeese sausage being sold around the island!

  180. Kazz April 12, 2011 3:59 pm

    MI Warrior,

Outright donations go DIRECTLY for the program to use.

Ticket revenues disappear into the black hole of debt.

If softball charged admission for $5.00 and we averaged 250 fans compared to a season of let’s say 30 home games = $37,500.00. That’s 37K minus what softball usually spends every season. Ok… that looks great on paper, but then you gotta pay the printing costs of tickets, the ticket handlers, and additional security or ushers to enforce paid attendance.

Now, let’s be REAL here for a second. If the average UH softball regular accepts paying $5.00 for his games, who here wants to wager that he’d still participate in giving an outright donation to the program via the booster club?

Most people that pay their monies to attend UH events, feel they are supporting the program and the athletic department, WHICH THEY ARE, but not in the way they THINK.

Cutting down the defecit is good and all and ticket revenues are great for programs like football and men’s basketball and women’s volleyball, but not for softball. Heck, all the $$$$ made from revenues from football is NOT reaped for the football program.

The figure of $37,500.00 goes against what UH softball spends and takes away from what the program could potentially gain for use not allocated by the annual softball budget.

Paying an admission of $5.00 per home game cuts down on the annual loss from UH softball, but does NOTHING directly to fill the books on what Coach Coolen can use from booster funds if people are busy paying $5.00 instead of openly donating.

If softball starts charging admission, I’d EASILY say HALF of the people that donate $$$$ at the games NOW, would stop and by me saying “HALF”, that’s the LEAST I’d imagine and it would NOT surprise me to say that ALL would stop.

  181. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 4:09 pm

    Kazz,

I am not sure about your reasoning.

I love opera, subscribe to the season, and still donate money to Hawaii Opera Theater. That’s because it gives me so much pleasure and I want to make sure they keep their doors open.

So, I’ll bet many softball fans feel the same way. $5 is nothing compared to what I pay for opera. Why not make a donation, too?

  182. Kazz April 12, 2011 4:23 pm

    Gigi,

The demographic that constantly donates at the home softball games are of an older age with a few in their 30’s and 40’s, but mostly folks in their 60’s and above.

These individuals are on fixed income and whatnot and by having UH softball free with us offering to take donations gives a very relaxed approach.

People want to give, but can be shy about it.

Once something “forced” like admission is enforced down the line, then POOF! Some may not want to come our way, due to financial straps.

Again, the thought of paying admission is VERY powerful as it is a required financial obligation and the MAJORITY of people are trying to pinch every penny, regardless of the price.

People that believe in the cause are a small majority as it is at softball, include admission and that goes away a bit.

  183. PowderPuff April 12, 2011 4:24 pm

Michigan Warrior, if you want to e-mail me at powderpuff (at) hawaii (dot) rr (dot) com, and let me know your phone number, I can text you the ringtone for H50. It’s GREAT when it starts ringing, especially when you’re on the mainland.

  184. Kazz April 12, 2011 4:24 pm

    MI Warrior,

Do you have Verizon? You can choose Hawaii Five O as your ringback tone as well on top of your straight up ringtone.

  188. madeinhawaii April 12, 2011 4:51 pm

    Happy Birthday to DPK!….

Spring babies das what we are!

  189. Michigan Warrior April 12, 2011 4:56 pm

    Powderpuff, you’ve got mail.

Thanks, Kazz. Our phone carrier is Sprint, at the moment. Hearing Hawaii Five-0 as a ringtone while back home was cool. It’ll be cooler hearing it up here! I thought about it while I was back home, but with everything that’s been going on, it just kinda slipped my mind. Watching Hawaii Five-0, and hearing that song again just reminded me of my intentions.

I hope we stick with the “system” we’ve got now (donations and no tickets) for Wahine Softball.

    Mahalo, everyone!

  190. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 5:00 pm

I wonder how much of my donation to UH Foundation goes toward salaries for the UHF employees. Are they fat cats, or what? Just asking.

  191. dizi izle April 12, 2011 5:17 pm

Great blog here! Also your site loads up fast! What web host are you using? Can I get your affiliate link to your host? I wish my website loaded up as fast as yours lol

  192. Garret April 12, 2011 5:31 pm

I say it’s a donation, but if you don’t do it, I heard they put your name in a paper to show people who paid and who didn’t pay.

    rage777,

If the Del Mar school district, they ask the parents to donate $800 per kid, plus they need volunteers for the carnival (we volunteer every year for each kid’s booth), jog-a-thon, etc. We donated our $1600, but for the 3 years we’ve had a child at our school we have seen that they do *not* put the names of donors in the paper. In fact, there is no way for people to know who donated, which is nice since I don’t want to know who didn’t donate.

  193. Garret April 12, 2011 5:33 pm

UH actually set the kickoff times for 6pm last week or earlier. I checked UH’s website when I wanted to put home kickoff times on my blog last week and saw that UH had the games set at 6pm. I thought that the 6pm time was well known, but I guess most people didn’t know until today’s paper.

Schools like Fresno State aren’t going to complain about late kickoffs for MWC games…because UH is paying the full cost for the charter flight. So, no matter how late the game ends they won’t have to pay for an extra hotel room night.

  194. Garret April 12, 2011 5:34 pm

No ticket price increase is nice…but increasing the required donation and charging special add-on prices for 3 games instead of 1 means UH will get more money from the fans.

  195. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 5:45 pm

    D1,

Mahalo for the link. Interesting that administrative and management services cost in excess of $3.1 million last year.

The bottom line was still good to my eyes, though.

  196. Garret April 12, 2011 5:50 pm

I lot of people here and in other sports forums like to use URL shortening services such as “Bit.ly” or “Ow.ly”…I wonder if they know that actually supports Gadhafi’s regime…the “ly” domain is controlled by the government of Libya and all domains registered using “ly” result in money in Gadhafi’s pocket/war chest:

Can you tell us more about the Australian wahine who’s thinking about signing with our basketball team?

  201. Ralph April 12, 2011 7:43 pm

sorry Curt, coach couldn’t talk specifics about recruits who have not signed. But I’m glad the Aussie pipeline is reopened, we’ve had good success with the women from down under. She said she has two more scholarships to offer for next season.

  202. Curt April 12, 2011 7:45 pm

    SteveM,

Can’t sing but can eat and talk story. We b there or b square.

  203. Curt April 12, 2011 7:49 pm

    Ralph,

I agree; it’s great that we’re reopening that pipeline. I remember players like Raylene Howard and a red-head from some years back.

  204. Curt April 12, 2011 7:54 pm

    Hey al,

I still at da airport. Wheir da guy namar alcindor? 😉

  205. Ralph April 12, 2011 8:01 pm

Curt, Fresno State has 4 Aussies, they have tapped into the pipeline. Now coach DTD got to build relations with the Aussie coaches, maybe Tania Brunton Tupu in New Zealand can be a source of info for her, Tania played in the Alumni game. Chawan Cut brought his newspaper clipping of her and got her picture with him and an autograph.

  206. madeinhawaii April 12, 2011 8:08 pm

    really? ambiance?

  207. madeinhawaii April 12, 2011 8:08 pm

    eh… fool me once…

  208. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 8:15 pm

    MIH,

    both spellings are correct.

  209. Curt April 12, 2011 8:22 pm

Wow…4 Aussies for Fresno State and 0 for Hawaii. If there’s a good one from the land of kangaroos, no way they should be choosing Fresno over Hawaii. Okay Coach Dana; go get ’em. As God is your witness, Hawaii will never be hungry again (for blue chippers from down under).

  210. jm2375 April 12, 2011 8:27 pm

mih – along the same lines as “special-ist” 😈

heheheh, Curt! Right on! Do you think Al will see the subliminal message in there? 😕

    🙂

  212. Curt April 12, 2011 9:16 pm

    SteveM,

Al sees and knows all. He can discern all subliminal, subterranean, and subway sandwich messages. He reminds me of Karnac da Magnificent; he even looks like Karnac. 😉

  213. Curt April 12, 2011 9:19 pm

    SteveM,

I betta be careful. Udderwise al no goin’ give me any mo birdie updates. Shhhh…so he no ken hear wat I said.

Say hello to LV. his karaoke patnah coming down too?

  215. d1shima April 12, 2011 9:33 pm

Football junkies should watch Gruden’s series with the QB’s on ESPN-U. Terrific chalk talk stuff and film breakdown.

Yesterday’s with Locker was great; today was Andy Dalton (I get the feeling Gruden doesn’t like the guy); Mallett, Newton and Gabbert finish the series.

  216. d1shima April 12, 2011 9:34 pm

    Gruden is Gruden… 😈

    Chucky! 👿

  217. gigi-hawaii April 12, 2011 9:56 pm

    Jon Gruden is cute!!!

  218. kev-1 April 12, 2011 10:21 pm

  219. Kekoa April 12, 2011 10:23 pm

For all who have been to Fresno, I just have one question. How long did it take you to figure out that you were in the “Twilight Zone?” 👿

  220. al April 12, 2011 10:37 pm

curt, curt…its Carnac the magnificent. get it right.

  221. al April 12, 2011 10:38 pm

and curt, while you wait at the airport. be on the lookout for the point guard.

  222. al April 12, 2011 10:39 pm

    i wish i had carnac’s wealth.

  223. jm2375 April 12, 2011 10:39 pm

This oughta rile up Pomai – heard a couple of times that Pencil Legs Kapernick might get drafted in the FIRST round! 😈 bad choice, really bad choice.

  224. al April 12, 2011 10:44 pm

i know everyone is speculating on the poing guard.

some say, bring on the texan.

others want the european who went home to montenegro.

many pleaded for pierre to sign the dotted line (baylor bound).

any jc point guard they said.

go check csi there’s another guy.

me, well i’d like to see bobby miles’ ex-old friend cezar.

or the guy they call taylor-made.

who knows at this point. the gibber has so many guys interested its anybody’s guess and only the gibber knows.

  225. al April 12, 2011 10:54 pm

karaoke kall…you know me, i hate to miss those events.

especially at genji’s where the food is comforting and the kirin is really cold.

i have to attend to someone over the next few days beginning tomw.

(altho’ i may get to sneak out for the spring battle)

i guess i’m gonna miss the karaoke host who loves to go around the room and pretend to be cordial, only to shove the mic into your face.

i even tried to politely tell him, ‘eh, chotto matte kudasai”

oh well, i would have made an all out effort, but, since the songtress lizkauai won’t be in attendance, i’ll have no one to sign the phantom duet with.

“sing once again with me our strange duet……”

    mwahahahahahaha.

  226. Kazz April 12, 2011 10:56 pm

    Speaking of TWILIGHT ZONE…

The Rainbow Wahine departed HNL about 7pm Hawaii time.

They’ve got the unGody trip to Ruston, LA coming up.

8 hours to Texas, 2-hour drive to Shreveport, LA and ANOTHER 2-hour drive to Ruston, LA.

EVERYONE in the program should be GLAD that this is the LAST trip to Ruston, LA as part of the conference schedule at least. (WAC softball does NOT have home and home series in the same season).

  227. al April 12, 2011 10:57 pm

    225. i missed the “t” again. its about time that i got new glasses. this prescription must be outdated already.

    ralph would know.

  228. al April 12, 2011 10:58 pm

btw, congrats to curt for finally nailing #200 while i was at the gym.

  229. Curt April 12, 2011 10:59 pm

    Hey al,

It’s already NLI day on the mainland. But you may right that Gib might need a few more days to sort out the final scholarship or two. I wonder if the Gibber is back home or still galavanting on the mainland.

  230. Kazz April 12, 2011 10:59 pm

Oh and anyone at Fresno State can take a letter opener and stick it in their temple.

    Good night.

  231. al April 12, 2011 11:00 pm

kazz…funny you should mention that trip ruston, la. this morning bc was interviewing the la tech hc who was saying the same you did, only in reverse order as the bulldongs visit the les.

  232. al April 12, 2011 11:02 pm

well, i was just thinking the same thing that it is officially official to receive a faxed loi.

want to meet me at the gibber’s office?

    i have a spare key.

  233. Curt April 12, 2011 11:03 pm

    #229

The only reason I got #200 is because 1) I wasn’t paying attention at the time. 2) al was at the gym pretending to work out but was gawking at the wahine.

  234. Ralph April 12, 2011 11:05 pm

Al control your sugar and you’ll see better and feel better.

  235. Curt April 12, 2011 11:07 pm

    al,

Very funny regarding the key. I bet you some of the coaches are there right now.

  236. al April 12, 2011 11:14 pm

    i go to al’s gym.

  237. al April 12, 2011 11:16 pm

ralph…hard to control the sugar. it keeps jumping in to my cup of java. pieces of triple chocolate trifle end up on my plate when i am not watching, next thing you know its gone.

  238. al April 12, 2011 11:17 pm

curt…lets fax something over there. that should be fun.

    dear coach gibber,

i have rescinded my early decision to……

  239. Guy in the office April 12, 2011 11:20 pm

al: cezar would have been an awesome pickup; he was a phenom as a youth. looks like he committed to oklahoma state, though.

  240. Curt April 12, 2011 11:31 pm

    al,

#239 U bad. But funny, I was thinking the same thing. Naughty naughty.

  241. Curt April 12, 2011 11:32 pm

We really need an elite pg bad. Tom Henderson, where are u?

  242. Curt April 12, 2011 11:35 pm

    jm2375,

#224 If Kapernick doesn’t make it as a QB, he should have a decent shot as a WR. He’s perfectly built for it.

  243. al April 12, 2011 11:38 pm

guy…too bad. that kid is a blur isn’t he.

  244. al April 12, 2011 11:40 pm

curt…if there is any news on loi’s or commits it could be in this mornings paper. it’l come out at 1:40 am.

  245. Guy in the office April 12, 2011 11:40 pm

Just caught more video on Cezar; even caught a glimpse of Bobby Miles in one. What a sick ballhandler. It’s like Maravich reborn in a 5-foot-11 Hispanic youngster. He’s just fun to watch; crowd-pleasing, jaw-dropping skills. Some may think he’s too over the top. Oklahoma State coach will need to give him some freedom.

  246. Curt April 12, 2011 11:44 pm

Too bad about Cezar. Sounds like a special one. Oh well…next.

  247. Ralph April 12, 2011 11:49 pm

Curt, Troy University in Alabama has 3 women aussies playing basketball

  248. Curt April 12, 2011 11:49 pm

I’ll look out for the news in the morning paper and on the BC show. Maybe ST will put the word out early too.

  249. Curt April 12, 2011 11:52 pm

    Ralph,

Oh my goodness. Troy? Coach Dana. U need to make a big-time presense in the land down under.

  250. al April 13, 2011 12:41 am

curt…not one to pull your leg (too often), but, some breaking news about to burst any minute i am told stay tuned……

  251. Curt April 13, 2011 1:02 am

Thanks al. You must be at the UH athletic complex in your black ninja outfit and about to bust into Gib’s office to check his fax machine.

  252. al April 13, 2011 1:08 am

shhhhhh. well, there is a delay in transmitting the info. sorry. fo real.

  261. al April 13, 2011 1:43 am

okay so it looks like we get brereton and dillon biggs this period.

add this mix to gerry blakes and ronnie stevens.

    cheeesh.

    great gets.

i’d be selling season tickets about now.

  262. Curt April 13, 2011 1:51 am

Nice. Now, all we need is that pg.

  263. Kekoa April 13, 2011 2:04 am

Brererto is related to Al Harrington? Whoa…dats a huge plus! No worries about filling the SSC with fans.

The roar of the crowd will break screecher levels! Basketball will rule again in the 808! (…after Warrior FB, of course).

  264. Kekoa April 13, 2011 2:06 am

Brereton, that is. Sorry about the spelling, not Samoan enuff!

More on charging admission for softball games, I was told that some years ago they did try it and they could not make enough money to cover the expense of printing of the tickets, the ticket handlers, and additional security or ushers, so they scrapped it the following year.

#224 – jm2375 – NO WAY JOSE. If he was to go in the last round that would be one round to early. There is no way that he should be playing in the Arena league let alone the nfl.

    ST,

would be nice for coach Gib to devulge what his European recruiting turned up?, cause doesn’t look like there’s anything mentioned bout it? goose-egg?, future prospects?, yes-no?

with an abundance of prospects on the west coast…..I would think that it would be better to concentrate in that area, than spending $$$$$ going overseas??(and coming back empty handed), imo.

  271. mctruck April 13, 2011 4:36 am

    Dayton’s article on prospect,(Bereton), looks like a very good addition…if he signs….another versitile player/scorer.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  339. asics lethal April 25, 2011 8:43 pm

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Great Tips. I will keep this in mind. Thanks again for the post!

  341. christian louboutin outlet April 26, 2011 3:33 pm

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  342. cheap jimmy choo April 26, 2011 10:29 pm

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  343. links of london April 27, 2011 3:54 am

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

I’ve to say that I agree with the sentiments about having AOL as amount a person. The comments posted along side it sum it up nicely, that it does practically nothing to strengthen the model, but only adds confusion. From the most beneficial rebrands from the l ist, I’d set SyFy on the prime. At first I hated the title, since I thought they did it ??just since,??? when actually they had to change their title as a consequence of being unable to legally use Sci-fi.??? Now somewhat than coming up which has a whole new title that no one would know- and potentially lose a lot of your already inbuilt SciFi??? brand- they caught together with the previous identify with a bit of word play. I can nevertheless call SyFy Sci-fi when it comes up, and that helps make me joyful.

This is the ideal weblog for anybody who wants to know about this topic. You know so a lot its nearly hard to argue with you (not that I actually would want…HaHa). You undoubtedly put a new spin on a subject thats been written about for years. Excellent stuff, just fantastic!

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
