Thursday’s practice

• Right wideout Jovonte Taylor missed his third consecutive practice while receiving treatment on his infected right arm. He is suffering from a staph-like infection. The coaches remain hopeful he will be available to play in Saturday’s game against New Mexico State.

• Joe Avery and Craig Bell have been sharing reps as the No. 1 right wideout.

• Kealoha Pilares and Dustin Blount have been practicing as the kick returners in Taylor’s absence.

• Wideout Royce Pollard, who is recovering from a hairline fracture in his left fibula, had a setback during yesterday’s practice. He is experiencing pain in the area, and he did not participate in full drills today.

• But safety Richard Torres resumed practicing today.

We have a super saleswoman, Jessica Owens, who is smart, beautiful, funny, etc. But she’s a dropper. And a tripper. I know this because I was walking out of the building and she dropped two things in five steps. And she tripped. So I started to nickname her The Dropper.

And, as fate would have it, soon after. I dropped my tape recorder. And I tripped. Worse, I tripped in front of The Dropper, who said: “Bachi.” Indeed. So, to remove the bad karma, she no longer is The Dropper. And I offer a public apology to Ms. Owens. Or Super Saleswoman.

You know alot of people criticize Miano for the play of his db’s and his fondess of walk ons but Richard Torres is a great example of a walk on who contributes regularly, I mean his technique for tackling is solid he reminds me of Ryan Keomaka maybe not as fast but more physical

The shirt says Hukilau Cafe. I think it’s from the Hukilau Cafe and not the beach. I’m not sure if the Hukilau Cafe on the shirt refers to the real one in La’ie, or to the one that was in the movie “50 first dates”, which was filmed at Kualoa.

  38. Garret November 12, 2009 1:29 pm

    letsgowarriors,

One LA paper had the news about 3 days ago about Hasiak being in Hawaii last weekend, but I didn’t post it due to the problems I had been having with the blog software. A day and a half later I saw the news posted on Hawaii forums, but I think the article they cited did have the same detail that the LA paper had.

Hasiak had gotten into several fights in practice and the UCLA coaches were working with him on anger management issues according to the article. I’ll dig it up tonight if I have time.

  39. Garret November 12, 2009 1:31 pm

Today’s Las Cruces newspaper had some interesting info on NMSU. It looks like NMSU has two sophomore DEs that the OL will need to worry about.

The microscope continues to increase on Fils, who leads the Aggies with six sacks on the season. It’s a marked improvement for a defensive end who didn’t get to the quarterback at all last season, his freshman year in college football.

“I feel like I’m way better at rushing this year,” Fils said. “I used to just run up the field. And last year, I didn’t get back there at all. But (defensive line coach Jesse Williams) has taught me some moves to work with. And I’m getting better.”

In fact, Fils isn’t the only second-year Aggie who’s coming off the edge more frequently in 2009. Fellow end Donte Savage has also shown a burst this year, recording four quarterback takedowns of his own on the season.

The duo have brought a one-two punch to the Aggie defense which has been a pleasant surprise, and a welcomed addition.

“We trust both of them out there,” head coach DeWayne Walker said. “And we look for them to keep growing as a pair. We need them playing at a high level, together.”

Williams said that Fils has held up a bit better against the run this season, while Savage, although with two fewer sack, has pressured to quarterback more frequently, flashing his ability as a pure pass rusher.

“Both have plenty of physical attributes,” Williams said. “But from a football-IQ perspective, they’re getting there too.”

The duo will be back in full force this weekend, going against a University of Hawaii team that will take to the air early and often.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Fils said. “They’re going to throw a lot. It gives us more chances. That’s what it’s all about.”

I met him and his family at my neighbors son’s b-day party awhile ago. Jameel Dowling was with him- nice guys. After Hawaii beat UDub in 2007 to go 12 and 0, my friends and i continued the celebrating at a local Kailua watering hole, and who shows up? Coach Duff! Needless to say, we threw down a bunch of shots while cheerfully discussing the Warriors getting to a BCS game. Duff reminded me of a proud Papa that night. All the best to him and his ‘ohana!

Looks like Nevada will be hosting Cal in Reno next year:

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada will play host to California at Mackay Stadium for the first time ever next season as the schools have reached an agreement in principle on a three-game series, officials from both schools announced today.

Under the agreement, Cal will come to Reno to play Nevada on Sept. 18, 2010 and the Wolf Pack will visit Berkeley twice in future years. Dates for those games in Berkeley will be announced at a later date.

I found a bunch of articles about Hasiak in the 5 LA-area papers that cover UCLA. This LA Times article is dated yesterday but it was on their website Tuesday afternoon.

UCLA freshman guard Stan Hasiak will not be with the team for an indefinite period, as he is “dealing with issues,” Coach Rick Neuheisel said.

Hasiak, who has appeared in four games this season, has had a number of anger issues on the practice field, particularly early in the season. He was involved in a handful of near fights with teammates during live scrimmages. He appeared in the first two games but was benched for the Kansas State game and did not play in the next two games.

Hasiak is back in Los Angeles but could not be reached for comment.

  52. Garret November 12, 2009 3:16 pm

    wafan,

Yes, I’m sure that Cal and Nevada will bus to the other team’s stadiums. If Cal takes a bus to play at UCLA, they sure will bus to Reno! That saves them money and they also make extra money because their fans can easily get to their road game.

Stopped off at home to change my clothes – really wet – before heading off to a meeting in Kane`ohe.

Do read Charlie Memminger’s latest blog.- wonder if the subject would be interested in becoming a Tsai-ko?

Re computer woes – I thought it was just I who was experiencing them all. Several posts yesterday and the day before flew off into the ether while I sitting there doing nothing except checking for errors.

Received some information on the Aloha Stadium turf replacement which is contrary to what I’d been told several months ago so I’m trying to confirm with someone else is closely connected to the project. Will share what I’ve found out when the double-checking process is finished.

Also updated the current status of the ushers and their employment status.

BTW – wassup with Saturday’s T-Gate? Will it still be held if the weather turns out to be really carppy?

I know the game won’t be postponed. However, if it’s raining like this on Saturday, I’m not so sure I want to sit for three hours in heavy rain. Maybe we can move way up into the Nosebleed Section.

Time to go – have a good evening.

Rutgers did a great job of disposing of South Florida tonite at PISCATAWAY, NJ, and their only two losses were to BE foes #5 Cinn and #12 Pitts.
The Scarlet Knights defense, held the Bulls to only 159 yards and kept South Florida off the scoreboard.

I didnt believe the Scarletknights would amount to much in 2009 but, hey, 7-2 aint bad.
Of course, The BE is notorious for creme puff IC scheduling.
Rutgers had Howard, Texas Southern, Army, FIU and Maryland on their menu.

Rutgers is an A-Q team and their SOS is weighted by their conference….and such things make Kings.

The Aggies have the worst offense in the FBS.
In their last three games (LaT, FSU and Ohio State) they scored a combined 10 points and were held to 142 total yards against LaT.
They have a 2:1 run preference to pass.

NMSU beat Utah State at home 20-17.

The aggies are dead last, #120, in FBS total offense and average 232 ypg.
They are horrible at passing and average under 100 ypg.
However, they are tied at #71 w ND in rush pg at 138.

It appears like a no-brainer. Cut off their legs and you kill their game. The aggies have no air force.
The problem is Hawaii ranks #108 in run D and yields more run ypg than NMSU produces.

We shall see….and the yohos say the best D for Hawaii is spelled with an O.

I think this is the right game to wear my cowboy hat & boots. Just have to get a green lei papale.

  96. Rob25 November 12, 2009 9:26 pm

Okay…so when the Cowboys aren’t playing the Redskins…I still have to cheer against them since the Broncos are my second oldest son’s team. Good thing that Colt isn’t playing this year.

Very interesting doppler radar-watching this evening.

Rain clouds collapsing all around Oahu but with the exception of a brief time on the Leeward Coast, Oahu’s been pretty dry.

Hope Lewis Walker’s worked on his timing, or maybe it’s estimating, I don’t know. There were a couple of running tackles he was trying to make coming across the field where he missed intersecting with his man. Wonder why? Physics? I know it’s hard to do, running at full tilt & being able to hit a guy running away from you. Good luck, Lewis!

Tomorrow’s LA Times has an update on Hasiak being back with UCLA.

UCLA freshman guard Stan Hasiak returned to the team Thursday, but Coach Rick Neuheisel said it was “unlikely” he would play Saturday at Washington State. He is not expected to travel with the team.

“He’s back in good stead and we’re excited that he’s back,” Neuheisel said after Thursday’s practice.

Hasiak, one of last year’s top recruits, has been involved with numerous incidents involving near fights with teammates during scrimmages. He appeared in the first two games this season, but then missed the next three. Hasiak also did not suit up against Washington last week and did not travel with the team for the Oct. 31 game against Oregon.

Neuheisel said this week Hasiak was “dealing with issues.” On Thursday, he did not elaborate. “I would leave it at he’s back and he’s in good graces and I’m excited that he’s back,” the coach said.

    madeinhawaii,

I used Chrome most of today, but went back to Firefox tonight since I’m just more used to it and like it better. Turning off the Microsoft plug-ins seemed to help, though things are still not perfect with my posting to and refreshing this blog.

  114. Garret November 12, 2009 9:43 pm

Since the blog software actually seems to be working okay now, I’ll do the free play links. Please ignore my next 5 posts if you do not want to read the off-topic stuff. I have over 40 good ones to choose from but I’ll limit this to 5.

About 100 kids in the US die from the flu in a normal flu season, but in the first 6 months of this year (which is normally the lightest portion of the year for flu problems) 540 kids have died. The normal flu has 90% of deaths for people older than 65, but the swine flu has 90% of deaths for people younger than 65. The projected 5,400 deaths for children from the swine flu this year means that the death rate for children is 20-40 times greater than the normal flu.

Otherwise, it’s been smooth sailing on my end… Opera, IE, Firefox, or Chrome.. even K-Melleon runs okay.. except it crashes when the Tiser tries to force too many pop-ups.

If you ordered men’s basketball season tickets, there’s an insert from Jim Donovan and Amanda Paterson, the Compliance Officer, about NCAA rules re interactions between a “representative of UH’s Athletic Interests” and prospective student-athletes. I learned a lot such as the rules of engagement start in Grade 7 for basketball whereas for all other sports, they start in Grade 9.

There must have been such major incidents in which money and favors were exchanged for these rules to have been put into place. Will track down more information over the next couple of weeks.

I suggest that folks who have young athletes in your family who may be good enough to play the sport in college need to check out the rules with the Compliance Officer at any institution. For example, if you make a donation to Wahine volleyball or Men’s football this year and then your granddaughter or grandson decides to play that sport four years from now, you MAY be in violation of NCAA rules if you provide any kind of financial support to the family. There is no time limit in being a booster.

Family members may be excepted from the rules, but it needs to be checked out.

Any background information on what schools, what athletes & when these acts took place which then led to these rules would be most muchly appreciated.

Another big weekend of sports – Bill Amis, hurry up and heal since we need you back on the team by the holiday tournament braceting the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl. As for the six-game suspension against Douglas Kurtz, it really seems a shame to hold someone responsible for actions committed outside of the United States at the age of 17. However, he’s to be commended for taking the hit and getting past it.

Nitenite – another long day tomorrow including a visit to the Toothmeister.

Good morning Tsaiko Nation, It is Aloha Friday which means YOUR life on an island deep into the Pacific will be of tranquility & bliss when you RISE and smell the ocean currents, BREATHE the trade winds through out the day as it does not matter if rains or mist comes ONLY because the SUN will eventually break out and you will see BEAUTIFUL Diamond Head in Full scale with the smile and laughter engaging Hawaiian people of ALL cultures as Oahu will be in rare form as the “True Gathering Place”.

Makiki, Hawaii Kai, Kapahulu, Kailua, North Shore, Pearl City, Kaneohe, Ala Maona and Manoa Valley “Can you see me now my Hawaiian eyes” as the LOVE for you GREAT folks will NEVER grow old BECAUSE the island chains of Molakai, Maui, The BIG Island and “Liz Kauai” will keep us in the “chain” better than Fleetwood Mac and lead singer Stevie Nicks could ever sing or do.

Nothing could be finer then to be in Aina Haina “IN THE MORNING” with portuguese sausage & eggs, rice / spam with some good GUAVA JUICE to wash it all down while you get ready to drive the H1 freeways NO matter if traffic is bumper to bumper for all that has to happen then is to look in your rear view mirror and see the Keikei on the passenger side or back as he or she is the “reason for the season” !

So my beloved Hawaii “TSAIKO NATION” enjoy your day and make sure you HUG your friend, neighbor, love one, foe, associate or professional colleague as LIFE is short and we must live it to the FULLEST and what better way to show any affection through gesture of care, warmth, sincerity and kindness.

“For God so love the world that he he gave his ONLY begotten son that who ever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life
For I am the Alpha and Omega, World with out end AMEN” !

Vaya Con Dios Tsaiko Nation and Imua Warriors !

Ferd’s article had an interesting comparison of salaries for assistant coaches.

UH assistants make a total of about $1 million per year.

NMSU assistants make a total of about $470,000 per year.

Boise State assistants make a total of about $1.6 million per year.

Just read the article in The Other Downtown Daily about Keith Amemiya’s leaving the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. Word on the political street is that he is going to be the head guy in Mufi’s campaign for Governor with the expectation of getting a major position in the new Hannemann Administration come December, 2010 – assuming that he wins both the Primary over Abercrombie and the General over Aiona.
