Thursday

From today’s practice:

• Defensive tackle Haku Correa underwent surgery today for a displaced fracture in his foot. Usually, this is a season-ending injury, but a new aggressive operation will be used in the hope he can return in six weeks.

• Left tackle Clayton Laurel has been hobbling because of a sore foot. But he is expected to play. And while David Lefotu has received a lot of work at right guard, Andrew Faaumu will get the start. So here’s the starting offensive line: LT Laurel, LG Brett Leonard, C Matagisila Lefiti, RG Faaumu, RT Levi Legay.

• Don’t expect Miah Ostrowski to play. He didn’t practice today. Justin Clapp gets his second start.

• Linebacker Brendan Daley will undergo foot surgery tomorrow and miss the rest of the season. He was a 3-for-2 player, so he’ll get to redshirt this year.

• D-end Tavita Woodard has been told he will need to undergo a two-week rehabilitation program for his surgically repaired foot. He’s targeting the San Jose State game as his return.

• Desmond Dean suffered an apparent knee injury today. He was helped off the field.

• ESPN Australia was at practice shooting a segment on returner/slotback Scott Harding and offensive lineman Blake Muir. Muir has received a lot of reps, but UH won’t use him unless there’s an emergency. They don’t want to waste what could be a redshirt year.

* * * * * *

UC Davis coach Bob Biggs is quite the character.

He also has local ties, having lived in Kaimuki for two years in the 1970s. He said he worked as a recreation coordinator at the Palolo Recreation Center in the mid-1970s. His friendship with the Vasconcellos family helped lead him to the islands after he was cut by the Denver Broncos.

Biggs credits Virginia Hinshaw, who will be retiring as the Manoa chancellor in June, as being helpful in setting up this game.

Throw out win/loss records, the point spread, classification, facilities, etc – the team that blocks and tackles best will win the game. In many ways, football is a very simple game.

ST – Game is Saturday, not tomorrow.

Hoping to catch it on ESPN3. Shouldn’t be blacked out here on the west coast.

One would think that with the company being owned by a former UH player, there would be more willingness to work with Nate, especially during football season, to make the announcing gig work. Po ho, I really wanted to see Nate break into the broadcasting scene. He is a talented guy who is well-spoken.

Group rate tickets for Reno game on Nov. 12

Tickets are only $22; the regular rate is $29 and I am NOT charging a $10 service fee per ticket. Just called the Reno ticket office; they still get plenty good seats in the UH section–L (30 yard line–rows 4 thru 29) behind the team–the team will do the haka right in front of us!

For the map of stadium seating, open this link and click “Mackay Stadium”:

    http://www.nevadawolfpack.com/tickets/u…ckets.html

PS: there is gambling in Reno; lol–but not for the players!

    Email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

PSS: We had 125 in our group at UW; and we get almost 200 for San Jose (let me know also if u need tickets for SJSU for only $25 group rate; compared to $45).

We are more than grateful. Our Kayla suffered a concussion tonight in high school volleyball (she’ll dive to save that ball) and was immediately taken to Queen’s Hospital in serious condition. CAT scan looked good though, but they are keeping her for observation.

Thank you so much for your prayers and positive thoughts. Give your kids extra hugs and kisses now…”

It’s too bad that Nate had to withdraw from broadcasting UH games. I’m sure he will have another opportunity in time. For now he wants to concentrate on his first job of scan imaging day in day out, which is most important. I’m sure he will do quite well.

I’ve had this procedure done twice now, and the first time was a little frightening. Second time wasn’t so bad. But this technology is amazing to see your internal body in 3D with a powerful magnetic scanning. This is what most of our athletes go through now when they are injured.

Here’s a sample video of MRI Scanning pictures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySzCasRhA84

We all wish Nate well and accomplish what he set out to do.

Boycott. If the two wanted to fight and who’s the best it would have happened already. From blood work excuses from Pacquiao’s corner to Mayweather… being Mayweather…

    Enough already.

  27. Kevin September 22, 2011 7:56 am

How many times already we’ve seen volleyball players dig for a ball and resulting injury. It’s not frequent, but I remember when Ric Cervantes went for a dig, got it, but slammed his shoulder into the teraflex.

    Best wishes to Kayla indeed.

  28. Kevin September 22, 2011 8:04 am

I don’t think I’m speaking out of place when I say, those that understand the value of UH athletics to the university and state as a whole should be weary and vigilant about who is the next Manoa Chancellor.

I liked Hinshaw and respected Hinshaw and at the least she voiced her opinions in support of UH athletics and the student-athletes. While she didn’t have a hand in the MWC/BWC deal, her presence alone representing the upper campus was refreshing.

The LAST thing we need is to revert and succumb to those that still wish death upon the athletic department of the university they claim they “love”.

  29. madeinhawaii September 22, 2011 8:17 am

I don’t want to see one that was like her predecessor… trying to keep the AD from speaking out and asking for help. We need greater transparency from our public institution and Hinshaw was a step in the right direction. Maybe it isn’t Hinshaw that really should be replaced but someone or others higher up.

Are we breaking in some of our redshirt freshman in the Oline this weekend?

  33. Kevin September 22, 2011 8:28 am

    Made,

Autonomy…. The value of it is a lot to some people, but the people in the athletic department know that they need help from the legislature and some just don’t want UHAD to ask for it for fear of losing that image of autonomy.

Same people would rather see UH athletics DIE if they had their way.

Been hearing this for years on and off and sometimes when things hit a snag… one must wonder………..

With all that working against UH athletics, it’s amazing how we got around all that to get into the MWC and BWC.

Remember the articles following our invite, didn’t one name JUMP out at you as to some of the people credited with helping UH move towards the MWC and BWC???

    ROCKNE FREITAS.

Howard Carr and others that I cannot remember at this time all played roles too, but just seeing that name… brought “chills” to my spine, in a good way.

Now as far as those wanting nothing to do with athletics and those that will NEVER see it’s value to the university and the state, I dunno who exactly they are, but they are there.

Howzit MIH! Did you see the discussion re McSodium last night after you went to sleep? Hope our BP is better this a.m.!

  38. Kevin September 22, 2011 8:42 am

The pure hatred for UH athletics with some of those representing the academic side of the university is something that I cannot really describe.

When attending that BOR meeting where they voted to activate the student athletic fee, those in opposition that represented the faculty in various forms were quite disrespectful and immature.

Those in opposition of the fee were not all like that. There were some that projected their opinions against it and while I didn’t believe that, at least they presented their argument in a respectful manner.

But yeah, fans of NMSU athletics could also relate as they too have issues between academics and athletics.

And for the schools that flourish athletically and academically… well, you’ll never hear of these issues.

Just like this country of ours, until there is middle ground. We will NEVER achieve our true potential.

Hence, she dove for that shank ball… no guts/no glory, right? Was so scary to have her unconscious but she is okay and expected to go home later today.

  50. Shoko September 22, 2011 9:03 am

Well, the only reason I ask is because I read a story in the Vegas paper where Hauck credited the Pistol offense in their win against the Warriors. He also said he didn’t want to use the Pistol name, which made me think of what the Warriors named it.

I hope that everyone can practice today and that UH has as full a team available as possible. However, if there is a danger for aggravating an injury, I hope that those players sit out or have limited snaps in the UC-Davis game. UH needs its team to be ready to go in Ruston.

Rick Pitino seems to be sure that Air Force and Navy are joining soon.

Pitino said he was told that the Big East will add service academies Air Force and Navy by the end of the week — but only in football.

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/blog/_/name/katz_andy/id/7001082/rick-pitino-thinks-big-east-survive

  63. Garret September 22, 2011 9:15 am

Navy’s AD said that independence worked for them for years…but independence won’t work much longer and they have to join a conference. That sure indicates that they are joining the Big East. I think that the Big East makes sense for them…I just hate the thought of the MWC losing Air Force.

If you take a look at what is happening with conferences today, they are basically going to be creating a monopoly. They are going to monopolize television. They are going to monopolize bowls. And they are going to monopolize scheduling. The speech that I have been giving for 10 years as athletic director may not be applicable for the next decade. And that’s why we have to be thinking about the future and not about where we are today. Today it works. Tomorrow, the way I see it, it probably doesn’t and therefore we have to be thinking of some type of conference affiliation very seriously and we are doing just that.

    http://navy.scout.com/2/1108796.html

  64. madeinhawaii September 22, 2011 9:15 am

    Whoops.. Shoko..

O’kini is Samoan.. maybe it was O’kina which is Hawaiian for that little accent between the “i”s in Hawai`i.

  65. BigWave96744 September 22, 2011 9:19 am

Isn’t Michael Green the guy who blasted Mack on the BC show for not recruiting Judah Parker and then the other night on the Call The Coach Show blasted Mack for giving UCDavis too much credit?

  66. Kevin September 22, 2011 9:20 am

    Who’s Michael Green?

  67. Garret September 22, 2011 9:21 am

Reflecting on Navy’s AD’s full interview, it sure sounds like the indy route would be even harder for UH in the future than had been thought. Navy already has scheduled games for 5-7 years as an indy, but even with such a long lead time their AD is saying they won’t be able to schedule games as an indy in the era of superconferences.

  68. Kevin September 22, 2011 9:22 am

    Oh nevermind. 😆

  69. Kevin September 22, 2011 9:23 am

    Garret,

Personally, I think UH shouldn’t even consider independency for ANY sport at all no matter what.

  70. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 22, 2011 9:26 am

I doubt AF is a done deal.

Where would they put their other sports? Would the MWC let them keep non-football in MWC when they don’t add beans to anything? I doubt it.

Big LEast can have AF in all its glory or AF needs to be hoping some Big West, WCC or something takes their non-football sports.

Going from a so-so league (MWC) to a crappy league (BLEAST) where you won’t get any share of the BBall fortune and fame.

  71. Kevin September 22, 2011 9:26 am

Only ONE sport at UH Manoa could still survive on independancy and that is women’s volleyball.

But even that is a reach.

  72. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 22, 2011 9:26 am

The only Michael Green I know is the prominent defense attorney in honolulu. I doubt that is the same person though.

  73. Old Diver September 22, 2011 9:27 am

Isn’t Michael Green the guy who had to later apologize to Coach Mack for making a false claim that UH didn’t try to recruit Judah Parker?

  74. Kevin September 22, 2011 9:28 am

    iwwthm,

Well, the way his name has been mentioned here it appears to be a public figure of some note so I assume people think it’s the attorney.

  75. Garret September 22, 2011 9:28 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

Reports say that Air Force has already contacted the WCC and WAC to put their non-football teams. Travel considerations apparently make Air Force not want full membership in the Big East.

  76. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 22, 2011 9:29 am

Whoever this Green guy is, must sure be a baller….That is IF he can set this match up.

  77. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 22, 2011 9:31 am

    Kevin,

If its the attorney then he IS a baller regardless of the match. lol. Hawaii Loa Ridge and all.

Not many attorney’s in Honolulu pull up with their $500,000 Bentley and walk around inside circuit court wearing $1500 sunglasses and wearing $4000 suits. lol.

One of the best defense attorneys out there. He was well known for defending the MOB figures in Las Vegas.

  78. Old Diver September 22, 2011 9:32 am

Wow, seems kinda strange to have your football team in a eastern conference and all your other sports in a western conference.

  79. Kevin September 22, 2011 9:33 am

Defending organized criminals in Vegas nonetheless huh???

What’s the matter??? His buddies couldnt cash in when UH was favored on Saturday??? 😆

  80. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 22, 2011 9:36 am

Hopefully the WAC says no…they have enough non-football sports in there. They need more Football programs to remain stable NOT olympic sports.

WCC: Just because AF has that beautiful chapel in the Springs doesn’t make it a religious institution. Hopefully their desire to have religious affiliated schools puts a damper on their application. I also think they wouldn’t be able to compete in basketball in the WCC.

  103. tom mui September 22, 2011 10:29 am

I recall meeting Virginia Hinshaw for the first time and was very impressed by her – and my admiration grew as she appeared in all of the athletic functions with her trade-mark hat! Her appearances at these events showed her support which the upper campus had not shown for many a year.

The concept of a sound body in a sound mind seems to have been forgotten by many in the ivory towers in the rarified air not realizing it is the athletics (and hopefully its success) that draws the vast majority of the community together.

So the support shown by Virginia Hinshaw was much appreciated by me and hopefully by all here.

  104. Kevin September 22, 2011 10:32 am

    Tom Mui,

Still feels ICKY as to why she’s gone after June…

  105. Kevin September 22, 2011 10:37 am

My personal feeling, at least the FIRST thing that popped into my head upon reading about her not being renewed is that the average person would see her and automatically think of UH athletics because of her visibility at games and how vocal she has been in support of UH athletics as opposed to her being associated with UH’s academic side.

This appears to be the general observation.

Of course I could see how those in the Manoa academia world would be unhappy with her visibility at UH athletic events and her opining on various UH sports related issues.

  106. Pomai September 22, 2011 10:38 am

I think there should be some vetting about her leaving.

  107. madeinhawaii September 22, 2011 10:38 am

If Hinshaw was on a 5-year contract, since she started on July 1, 2007 doesn’t her contract expire at the end of June 2012? If so, hopefully, things will change before then.

She lasted longer than Englert and Konan…well Konan was an interim so I guess that doesn’t count.

Don’t have anything to back this up but I think the Chancellor position at UH-Manoa has a high turnover rate in general.

  110. Kevin September 22, 2011 10:51 am

Konan should have counted for anything anyway.

  111. Garret September 22, 2011 10:51 am

Interesting explanation why Oklahoma insisted that Beebe be fired. The funny thing is that Texas wanted a different commissioner for the Big 12 but Oklahoma insisted on Beebe.

But some have said Beebe made some critical missteps in trying to hold the Big 12 together this time around, including holding a conference call with the league’s presidents on Sept. 2 without Texas and Oklahoma, sources told Orangebloods.com.

During that conference call, Beebe told the presidents to “work on Texas,” because Beebe believed the Pac-12 wouldn’t invite Oklahoma without Texas, sources said.

In the end, Beebe was right. But Oklahoma sources resented Beebe for that, and OU sources told The Oklahoman the Sooners wanted Beebe removed as commissioner going forward.

  113. Stephen Tsai September 22, 2011 11:08 am

Hinshaw is a decent woman, somewhat brilliant researcher, with a strong appreciation for intercollegiate athletics.

But the higher-ups wanted a change, and now they’re getting the change.

In a few years, we can analyze the move.

  114. Stephen Tsai September 22, 2011 11:11 am

If you are interested in taking part in the chancellor selection process, there MAY be at least one position on the committee open to the general public. Other positions MAY be open to members of the Alumni Association and Ahahui Koa Anuenue.

Once the search committee has been established, it will select the core criteria – academic background, research background, employment background, etc.

If you want to express your concerns about the qualifications prior to issuing the call for applications, then I strongly urge that you write the Board of Regents. Click http://www.hawaii.edu/admin/regents/index.php for contact information.

With respect to contacting legislators, probably the key person is State Senator David Ige who not only represents Aiea but also is chair of the WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE. He is definitely the go-to-first money guy.

State Senator Jill Tokuda chairs the Senate Education Committee – both higher & lower. All requests start there and then move to WAM. She represents half of Kailua and almost all of Kane`ohe so if there’s any interest in a meet-up, let me know and I’ll arrange for it.

Roy Takumi chairs the House Education Committee (lower only) and represents the next district over. A good guy and easy to talk to/with.

Ditto for Marcus Oshiro who represents the Wahiawa area and chairs the Finance Committee.

Blake Oshiro is the House Majority Leader and has a lot of control over what gets heard and processed and what does not.

As I stated in a post earlier this week, the semi-autonomous status of the University of Hawai`i System means that the administration deals directly with the Legislature rather than going through the Governor’s Office first. However, the Governor does have the final call once the new fiscal year starts by having the authority to withhold funding.

I HAVE to get back to work. See you on Saturday. If you have questions about the legislative process, please feel free to ask.

    tom mui #103:

echoing your support for Chancellor Hinshaw and her continued support of UH athletics even tho she told us theat “it was a hard game to watch”.

Mrs A-House and I sat and chatted with her in the HAL boarding area on Sunday for our flight home – she continues to support UH athletics and will do so until she relinquishes her position of Chancellor-UH manoa.

At least, in our life time, we were blessed with sharing our passion for UH sports with a Chancellor who truly cared what happened to each and every student athlete. Perhpas, this caused a rift with her upper campus “hai kara” administrators.

Must agree with tom mui that it is “sports”, at least in Hawaii, that brings the entire State into oneness – hope this will translate into donations, any kind, to support all the student athletes. Maybe we should concentrate our donations into other than $$$ – ideas, building materials, time, labor, etc. there are so many ways to eat a french fry!!!

  125. A-House September 22, 2011 12:03 pm

Reminder for anyone who is willing to donate their “free” wahine basketball ticket that is attached to the football season tickets – ask your relatives/friends/co-worker for the ticket if they are not planning to use them and bring to the tailgate on Saturday or send them directly to Coach Dana at lower campus.

a special “mahalo” to Uku in LA for bringing his tickets to Vegas – added them to what I have collected so far and will donate to the wahine basketball program!!

Appears that this program is headed into the right direction with several former “all-stars” transferring to UH to finish their careers.

Hope this will also apply to the wahine soccer program!!

  126. jm2375 September 22, 2011 12:07 pm

re: rift between the academic depts and the athletic department – IMHO there are 2 big reasons for the rift

    1) the faculty aren’t sports fans and couldn’t care less about the athletic dept

    2) they are protecting their “turf” and see the athletic dept as taking money away from their departments

In their “ivory tower” mentality, they fail to see the big picture – success in athletics = more money for the whole campus/system. This is by no means unique to UH.

  127. SteveM September 22, 2011 12:13 pm

  128. rainbowfan September 22, 2011 12:14 pm

No need for a separate chancellor’s position for Manoa or for that matter the separate Manoa campus staff. You have enough personnel in the UH system staff already. The Chancellor’s position was created in 2001 by Evan Dobelle . Reduce tuition costs for UH students.

  129. madeinhawaii September 22, 2011 12:18 pm

I think at this stage of the season, Hawaii has to play it’s best players for the day… including potential red-shirts. Maybe save their red shirt year for after a season of experience.

  131. LizKauai September 22, 2011 12:37 pm

    Thanks, SteveM.

Get well soon Momo – gotta SEE the game!

    Healing to all…

A-House and tommui- imho -UNITY is a fundamental quality needed for success. The ivory tower is on the endangered list unless it begins to act for the betterment of all of UH without the artificial barriers of us and them. Losing the Lower Campus will only accelerate the perception that a college education is not worth sacrificing the family farm for because there are no guarantees of jobs after graduation.

    Disunity=disfunctional.

  132. madeinhawaii September 22, 2011 12:45 pm

Closed-minded people will always have difficulties accepting open-minded individuals.

Do we have more injured players going into the fourth game of the season than we did in 2009?

  133. Slugger September 22, 2011 12:47 pm

    jm2375,

True dat! The academic side vs athletics = turf battles for budget no matter what school.

MRC Greenwood was hired after Chancellor Hinshaw. At this point in time, President Greenwood may want to hire someone who may be more in line with what she wants to put in place at UH. At least Hinshaw will still be with the university. She is a great supporter of the university.

  134. jm2375 September 22, 2011 12:55 pm

Re: combining the Manoa chancellor position with the system president. Don’t think the other campuses would appreciate it. System president is supposed to advocate and administer the ENTIRE system, while the chancellor advocates and administers the individual campus. Hard to do both without some conflict-of-interests. Manoa as the flagship campus gets most of the money and resources anyway. I am NOT in favor of it. The separation of positions is probably the only good thing Dobelle did during his tenure.

  135. Dan-O September 22, 2011 1:10 pm

FYI….Mana Silva re-signed to Ravens practice squad.

  136. COCOBEAN September 22, 2011 1:30 pm

Very neutral on Greenwood. She’s not very visible on athletic and academic matters.

The big But is, she recognized the importance of getting into the MWC. Don’t know if she picked Rockne herself or if one of her advisors did. She seemed genuinely elated at the presser to annouce we got in.

You don’t get to be prexy at UH unless you’re a pretty shrewd political operator.

  137. A-House September 22, 2011 1:33 pm

Do we realy know where MRC Greenwood stands when it comes to athletics?

I ask because she became the spokes person for UH announcing the alingment with the MWC and apparently had a hand in making this happen – unsure to what degree.

Will it be in my life time that UH football becomes “big time”? What da heck is “big time”? Your opinion is as good as anyone elses.

  138. madeinhawaii September 22, 2011 1:36 pm

    A-House…

UH will have to become “big time” before it’s football program can. Look at Women’s Volleyball.. no matter how big our crowds.. how well we do.. we are still, just a team out in Hawaii. Softball they considered a fluke.. Baseball, do they even remember?

  139. Sid Trio September 22, 2011 1:38 pm

I read your site frequently and I just thought I’d say keep up the good work!

  140. Kevin September 22, 2011 1:46 pm

    What is “big time”?

Well, for UH “big time” to me is at least getting people out of the parking lot and into the stadium BEFORE the 2nd quarter.

  141. madeinhawaii September 22, 2011 1:46 pm

But that means that the legislatures/law makers would have to dish out a billion dollars over the next 10-15 years to fix upper campus which we know is NOT going to happen anytime soon. So, in the meantime, they appease the more vocal minions by according some less expensive, quick fixes to the athletic department. Fixes, which while not serving the palettes of the more academia-centered folks, pleases us fans and creates an unwelcome distraction to the greater needs of upper campus. IMHO

In some respects the Manoa Chancellor can be more powerful than the UH system President.

Many of the tough decisions that affect Manoa directly must pass the Chancellor and is under her/his purview entirely.

I too do not mind having 2 separate positions between system President and head of Manoa.

  151. rich2176 September 22, 2011 2:28 pm

Note on foot injuries…I noticed during the UNLV game that 99% of the UH players had rolls & rolls of tape OUTSIDE of their shoes. This reduces mobility of the ankle and forces everyone to run around club-footed. UNLV players had NO visible tape on the outside of their shoes. Perhaps the UH trainers should reconsider their methods? Just a thought.

  154. Kevin September 22, 2011 2:39 pm

    Rich,

That taping method is kind of old. Our players did the same even with the Nike cleats. Even Colt did the same as did Davone Bess I believe.

See it on some pro players and here and there on some other college sports teams as well.

  155. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 22, 2011 2:41 pm

So if Air Force wants to take their football program to a makeup of; South Florida, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Louisville while West Virginia and UConn are looking for an out then Air Force can go knock themselves out.

If anything a MWC offer to Navy as a Football only member looks 100000X better than the Big East at this point.

Sure you get 3 years or whatever of AQ status but if Navy is looking at its interest beyond 7+ years…there may not be a Big East conference by then.

  156. madeinhawaii September 22, 2011 2:41 pm

We’ve had problem with shoes from some time. You’d think that would be solved by now. But with the new turf on Ching and Aloha?

  157. Kevin September 22, 2011 2:42 pm

Both Pilares and Salas had their cleats taped in the same fashion as well I think.

Come to think of it, most of our skill positions today and pre-Under Armour days did the same thing.

So the method hasn’t changed and in the past has not hindered mobility as evident by the players I named.

  158. Kevin September 22, 2011 2:46 pm

Under Armour spent time and money sending two individuals to Hawaii late in the 2008 season to have each player fitted specifically.

Following that UA improved their cleats and shoes overall.

As pointed out by another blogger before, other schools that have the same cleats aren’t reporting these issues.

Now when you have brand-new cleats.. then.. Remember the 2011 BCS National Championship Game? Both Nike and UA were looking to out-gun each other and Nike game Oregon new cleats and UA gave Auburn new ones as well. Those guys on both teams were reportedly falling all over the place.

  159. rainbowfan September 22, 2011 2:52 pm

For those that like a separate Chancellor’s office, please answer why, for example, UH needs a Finance Office for the System under the President and also for Manoa, likewise why a Human Resources Office for the System and also for Manoa ? Same for Information Technology offices, etc.

Reduce university bureaucracy and tuition costs for students – this is a known issue for students across the mainland also- too many yearly tuition increases at every university.

  160. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 22, 2011 2:55 pm

madeinhawaii: i subscribe to the thinking that we’re more likely experiencing multiple simultaneous lifetimes and that forward and backward are more like directions, than timelines, in a tapestry … if you ever get the chance to experience Past AND Future Life Progressions, that’s a real kick in the pants (fun, enlightening and no known or acknowledged harmful side effects although i’m sure people wonder about ‘us’) AND you get to know your family and friends a bit better as well — just like in this lifetime we often travel or play together on many different stages …

and see ‘death’ as at-most, a transition, travel between places/realities: plus i don’t think any one gets rid of us that easily

[ like this island … it’s both Way Bigger than we think and also so tied together like ‘a small place’ … so be good, be nice …make a positive difference big and small…]

Hate when things like this happen and you gotta unlearn a fundamental belief and restructure your personal universe. It will take more than a generation before everyone aknowledges something faster than the speed of light.

138 – Can! I think any program can become “big time”. to me, it’s is simple.. you gotta get ranked. If you’re not ranked, you’re not “big time” not only get ranked but stay ranked year after year. If a team can have year after year success and replenish what you loss and still maintain ranking, you’re on your way to “big time” That means you have built a program.. if not, i would say you’re just “fielding a team” with the hopes of everyone buying into your philosophy that will enable you to build a program. wanna get big time? find a way to get ranked.. and stay there.. that’s where everyone starts believing..

It aint gonna happen over night. JJ cranked and started the ranking engine again. Mac is keeping the engine running and is revving the engine (he is, trust me) We finally changed that crap Frazier oil and added high performance JD oil with octane. We might not be ranked, but we got the parts that can make this engine roll. JD will lube the parts that needs it. we’ll get ranked again, we’re not that far off..

Should the UH Defensive Coordinator be on the field rather than in the booth ? I know he prefers to be in the booth to see the field better to call the plays. But who “coordinates” the defense on the field ? In other words who motivates, corrects, talks to the players on the field during the game ? Tuioti, Miyano, Lee,Mac ? or they just do it by the position and those coaches ?

Rolo is on the field, so i assume he can talk to all the offensive players if and when he needs to.

Greenwood is system President, with Manoa being the flagship campus. She has a finance and HR depart. to oversee Manoa, Hilo, and all of the community colleges. She has to watch the bottom line, and we all know payroll and benefits takes up a big share of any budget, a reason she has to keep an eye on HR and personnel matters. Whereas Hinshaw has to be solely responsible for Manoa, and therefore she has a finance depart. and an HR depart for Manoa. I don’t see an duplication of services, each fulfilling a different need based on scope of responsibility.

We should raise student fees and tuition to help run the university. Tuition pays only a fraction of the cost of running UH, a large portion of the revenue comes from the taxpayer through state funding for capital improvements, etc, UH foundation, other foundations, Alumni, etc.

rainbow fan, please don’t complain about your tuition cost, it is what it is, we are paying a portion of your cost for your education through our tax dollars and donation to the UH Foundation, and many of us are not in school, or with kids currently enrolled in school.

for a while, I thought I was having a “Matrix” flashback!!

me no sabe Greek mythology – who is dis guy Odysseus? I thought U.S. Grant was a US Army General.

me no sabe me no tell, me press button go like hell!

  211. Ipu Man September 22, 2011 6:43 pm

Odysseus is one of the first Greek mythic heroes renowned for his brain as well as his muscle. Indeed he is a man with an inquiring mind, and he is also a man with outstanding prowess and bravery. We also must not forget that he is a top-notch athlete which only adds more to this seemingly insuperable character. It is no wonder why many scholars refer to Odysseus as a powerful mythic hero.

Odysseus often hesitates before acting, because he uses his reason and gift to evaluate things. This patience is one of his most important additional attributes. This has saved him and his men many of times, and it can be easily seen in various instances throughout his travels such as when he disguised himself as a beggar when he finally reached Ithaca, waiting for the right moment to reveal himself.

As great as he was, Odysseus still had some weaknesses that prolonged his voyage back to Ithaca. His most important weakness that he possess is that of his pride. Pride is good to have, but in Odysseus’ case he had to much of it. This is clearly evident in the episode on the cyclopes’ island. When Odysseus and his men are clearly safe away from the island Odysseus braggs about his exploit. Polythemus hears this and hurls giant boulders in the direction of the ship. A couple came very close to sinking the ship. Still that was not enough for Odysseus. Carried away in his pride he unwisely gave away his identity to Polythemus. With that Polythemus called upon his father, Poseidon, to punish the man who had harmed him. That incident hurt Odysseus more than losing a few men, because Poseidon made his travel home ever so longer and arduous.

Yet another weakness of our hero is his sensualness. Odysseus enjoys women.

  212. A-House September 22, 2011 6:43 pm

    Com’on Coach Rollo:

get dat grey matta rolling with sum nu plays to confuse da opponents defense – let go of the horse blinders – no be tunnel visioned.

and for heavans sake, go more vertical than horizontal with passes – bring the receivers closer to the QB or get a QB who can “zing da ball”.

if a play is in your book, it is not a trick play – only sports analysts call them tric plays.

  213. cocobean September 22, 2011 6:58 pm

    A-H,

You remember the beginnings. The early days. We had a new state of the art stadium. A young energetic up and coming coach. A well connected AD straight from the Pac10. There was total support – 45,000 fannies in the seats, the backing of the executive branch and legislature, all the Bishopt Street bigwigs. Seems everyone was on the bandwagon.

It was a giddy time. Sky was the limit. Back then fans could dream about improving each year and eventually competing with the Nebrakas, USCs and Oklahomas of the world. Home games was the place to see and be seen.

Seems back then we were closer to the “big time” than we are now. What happened? Was it just a pipe dream? Did reality set in?

RAINBOW FAN: Are you driving a 40-year-old car? Watching UH away games on a 40-year-old tv set? Writing your posts on a 40-year-old computer? Washing your clothes in a 40-year-old machine?

Higher Education business models have also changed significantly over the past 40 years – including the addition of FIVE new campuses to the University of Hawai`i System. Today there are nearly 90,000 people DIRECTLY connected to the University of Hawai`i System – students, faculty, researchers, staff. Add to that another 200,000+ former faculty, staff & students who are still amongst the sentient – and you have the potential for a lot of people who have a connection to UH.

Forty years ago, the John A. Burns School of Medicine was only a two-year school and did not become a four year school until 1973. Forty years ago, what is now know as the William Richardson School of Law was still on paper – the first law school class did not enter until the Fall of 1973.

Al summed it up – ten campuses – and soon to be eleven – on four islands require separate internal administrations woven together by the Board of Regents.

However, if you really feel that strongly about doing away with the Manoa campus administration, then I suggest that you follow two tracks simultaneously. First, address a written complaint to the BOR – the contact information is http://www.hawaii.edu/offices/bor/.

The second way of getting your concerns addressed would be to send a written (real) letter to State Senator Jill Tokuda and State Representative Scott Nishimoto who oversee higher education issues at the Legislature. Send a CC to your own senator and representative and request an appointment to follow up on your concerns.

If you are a member of the University of Hawai`i Alumni Association, raise the issue with their board of directors.

Meanwhile, why not write an op-ed piece in the Star-Advertiser or the Honolulu Weekly requesting that action be taken on the matter.

  216. A-House September 22, 2011 7:04 pm

    Ipu man:

sounds like you read the book On War written by Carl von Clausewitz, who as a young Prussian officer in the early 1800’s, put his thoughts/theories on paper which displayed the comprehensivesness, systematic approach and precise style on how to fight and win battles/war in Europe.

His principles apply to current battlefield(s) as it did in Viet Nam – war; the nature of war; theory of war; strategy in general; the engagement; military forces; defense; attack; and war plans.

hey, maybe it should be a requried reading for all UH coaches; especially football!

what do I know, I’m just an old fart!

  217. A-House September 22, 2011 7:13 pm

    cocobean:

so right on and I did not have to pay $200/seat premium charge!

Then, UH moved into a full-on college schedule and then the WAC. Staticness was stripped away with new administrators and coaches and bigger plans with better teams/players.

And so the drama continues into the MWC in 2012 where the 8 defectors again put the screws to UH by demanding travel allowance – is this the price we have to pay to live in paradise? big bachi when UH becomes the premier school in the conference.

  218. Ipu Man September 22, 2011 7:15 pm

Thanks for your input. I drive a 13 yr old car, have a somewhat old 13″ tv set,a 4 yr. old laptop & a 14 yr. old washing machine. I may be rip van winkle.

Maybe the models for Higher Education should be revised/changed – in these tough economic times – why should tuition be raised so much and taxpayers’ money is very hard to come by these days for the State Budget and all its competing requirements. Look at the UH football fan base that regularly attends games – it has shrunk. Ms Hinshaw was a good advocate for sports, but save her $337,000 salary and also review the excess Manoa and/ or System staffs . President Greenwood’s salary of $ 475,000 plus expense account of $150,000 should be enough for Manoa.

I think the University of Hawaii has expanded far beyond the limits of what it encompassed 40 years ago. We have a Law School, A Medical School, our football program wasn’t even D1 back then… Students didn’t have true representation, there was no legal service for students who wanted to appeal grades and such. Student Center was being built. The guy running for UH Pres. had a criminal record and coined the phrase “testicular fortification”… Abercrombie was a student, too. We marched on the capitol.. I lost my cool and yelled at the politicians… (now I do it at them standing in front of the TV instead of publicly.) We had a longshoreman strike.. everyone was running out of toilet paper.. but UH had lots.. I know.. saved my butt…. computers were run on punch cards… the digital age was what showed up on the green or red strip on your hand held calculator. Single sided, 8” floppy drives were the new-fangled stuff that drove these new blue computers.

    Internet? what was that?

Things moved slower. People didn’t sue each other over anything and everything.

Policital Science was a questionable degree – I guess some things never change.

We can’t go back, human nature won’t allow it. We’d be buried in digital dust and the school would go bust.

  234. izzy September 22, 2011 9:54 pm

    Go to:

    http://collegestats.org/colleges/all/

You’ll find that the cost of an education generally, rises with its quality and the size of the institution. UH in-state tuition is still quite reasonable at $5,390 and actually has one of the lowest out-of-state tuitions ($14,654) for an institution of its size (20k students) and status (I assume UH is still designated a “Major Research” University because of Hamilton Library and the East-West Center).

Yet there are other factors. For instance; while Saddleback College (yes, that one) has an in-state tuition of only $592 (remember it is part of the CA CC system), out-of-state tuition is $4,184. Then there’s the University of Washington that was mandated by the State Legislature under pressure from taxpayers to run itself under a more “business-like” model. In-state tuition is only $6,385 and out-of-state tuition is a whopping $22,131 (this is for a State University of 40k students). Now, in order to keep in-state tuition down and still keep funding for the University as a whole where it needs to be, the University now favors out-of-staters passing on otherwise qualified in-staters. Now the people of Washington are questioning the university’s acceptance practices and policies for incoming freshmen.

Just saying . . . Be careful what you ask for because you’ll always get it.

    Texting: The *new* ‘Generation Gap’

MOM: Do you want waffles or muffins for breakfast? Just text “A1” for waffles of “B1” for muffins.

ME: Why do you go through all the trouble? Why can’t I just text “waffles” or “muffins”?

MOM: We are texting in code! ;););):)

    Me: Waffles

    MOM: A1 or B1?

    ME; WAFFLES

    MOM: Sooo…A1?

    ME: Mom. Yes.

MOM: I think I would rather have muffins. I’m making muffins

    Texting: The *new* ‘Generation Gap’

DAD: Too small. Cant read. what does it say

    ME: Flip your screen

DAD: OK. The back of the phone says Galaxy. What does your message say?

  244. jm2375 September 22, 2011 10:12 pm

izzy – those $ figures are from 2007. Current UH tuition is more like $8400 resident and $23,200 non-resident.

  245. izzy September 22, 2011 10:14 pm

One can extrapolate cost rising at ALL institutions proportionally.

  246. izzy September 22, 2011 10:15 pm

UH has always bee an inexpensive University to attend from out-of-state.

  248. izzy September 22, 2011 10:16 pm

Meant to thank you for the link to “Co-Ed.”

All Warriors are welcomed for that. Actually you should thank my dad (poshumously) for that. But that’s not a story for this blog.

Did anyone notice that Co-ed is still the only fight song with animated lyrics?

    #201 Ballpicker,

The pleasure was all mine in our meeting last night 🙂 What a mixed plate of emotions last night, but the one thing, the only thing that mattered…..we honored a brother in the way that he should have been honored.

Mahalo for the kind words, if there is anything we can take from last night’s service…. life is fragile, life is short…..how are we going to ‘live for the dash’?

Warriors, don’t read the hype, just play your game, secure the victory and move forward.

Your writing is definitely pretty powerful and this is possibly why I am making an effort in order to opine. Thanks for the ideas you have discussed here. Something else I would like to convey is that computer system memory requirements generally go up along with other advancements in the technology. For instance, if new generations of processors are introduced to the market, there is usually a similar increase in the type demands of both computer system memory along with hard drive room. This is because the program operated by these processor chips will inevitably rise in power to take advantage of the new technology.
