Thursday morning lights

The Warriors woke up pret-ty early this morning to participate in the final full practice ahead of Saturday’s season-opener against No. 1 USC.

The practice began under the lights at the Ching athletic complex.

After that, there were meetings and classes. The Warriors are scheduled to depart at 2 p.m.

* * * * * *

It’s unfortunate the NCAA denied Jordan Puโ€˜u-Robinson’s petition to play this season after transferring from Washington State this summer. Logic indicates he would have a compelling reason to relinquish a scholarship and starting job to move back to Hawaii and join the Warriors as a walk-on. But rules are rules. Or, at least, that’s what NCAA has ruled.

Happy birthday to Momo.

  41. gobows August 30, 2012 10:02 am

what is the difference between “relinquishing” and “asking for a release” from a scholarship? coach chow mentioned usc has 3 players that were giving clearance to play without sitting out a year (assuming none of the 3 are from psu) anyone know how the circumstances of the 3 players.

…or maybe the ncaa screwed over usc and gave florida state, miami, and ohio state slaps on the wrist, so they are giving usc a break by allowing the players to play immediately.

…or the ncaa only give breaks to the big money schools and not small budget schools.

  42. Independent Thinker August 30, 2012 10:05 am

The boys will play well. They all are winners for showing up and playing no matter the outcome. The game will be lost not by these courageous young men, but by the deficiencies in the coaching. Good luck to the young men of UH. Be safe.

  43. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 30, 2012 10:05 am

When UH gives a scholarship to a walk-on, is it for only 1 year? Reason I ask is that Lane Kiffen noted that if he gives a walk-on a scholarship, it is guaranteed for only 1 year.

  44. 808Bowler August 30, 2012 10:12 am

Eh they just jealous of us living in paradise!!!!!

  45. jm2375 August 30, 2012 10:12 am

iwwthm – ALL scholarships are annually renewable, even the academic ones. Gotta perform or else…

  46. Ipu Man August 30, 2012 10:13 am

I think UH should be allowed to give as many scholarships as USC…

  47. Ipu Man August 30, 2012 10:15 am

I also think the NFL should not limit their rosters to a dinky few

like they do every pre-season. They should be allowed to have

a hundred players. Think what it would do to the unemployment

rate. It would be good for the economy.

  48. Stephen Tsai August 30, 2012 10:20 am

    All scholarships are one-year deals.

Some are one-semester deals if a player is due to graduate in December.

But no coach will tell a recruit he’s getting a one-year deal.

  49. Will-I-Am August 30, 2012 10:20 am

Nice stiff arm! That video clip got 1Million views. too bad the score was showing…

I would take the singer at my house. Interesting story. I got to stay at my all time favorite singers house once. He pretty much wrote half of the soundtrack to my life and I got to stay in his house and listen to him jam for a few days. One of my favorite moments in my life. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat even if I couldn’t tell.

  50. Stephen Tsai August 30, 2012 10:22 am

    NFL caps:

Well, there are minimum salaries and there is a salary cap, so economics dictate there is a limit to the size of a roster.

One of many great stories from that weekend is when he was playing one song that I didn’t recognize, I almost told him “you should record that song, I think your on to something”. Luckily I kept my mouth shut because he did record it, but it was on a soundtrack for a movie that was all Beatles covers! (Insert acronym for Laughing Out Loud here).

  76. Kevin August 30, 2012 11:30 am

    Hydration = pickle juice.

When the wahine softball team went to Tuscaloosa, one of the coaches, while on a tour of the facilities, noticed their training area had large jars of dill pickles.

Apparently 2oz of that with lots of water does the trick.

Some are on the fence about, but considering the amount of sugar and sodium in Gatorade, 2 oz of pickle juice for a healthy active person and a good amount of water does make sense. Sodium is key for water retention and is a key element to gatorade.

Just asking: How is it that Puu-Robinson is denied by NCAA, which earlier this year granted waiver to QB Phillip Simms from Alabama (where he started last season but was beaten out by McCarron) to Virginia? There didn’t seem to be any underlying reason for Simms’ move other than playing time (I may be wrong), but Virginia is closer to his hometown where he was a heralded national recruit. The whole process essentially took a few months: Simms reportedly decided to leave Alabama around May 1, Virginia applied to NCAA for waiver in early June, NCAA granted waiver around July 10. Meanwhile, back in Hawaii โ€ฆ

  97. A-House August 30, 2012 12:43 pm

Truth be told that the NCAA was so upset at many “big name BCS schools” for using international players with “pro” experience that they took away UH Mens VB national championship as a warning – fact is that they created a new rule in August 1996 and made it retro to 1991 so they could punish Costas and UH.

Now, how can a school “fail to be diligent” when NO rule was in force at that time. Its like making a law against robbing banks and go back 5 years to nab a person who specialized in robbing banks and/or trains.

I was and still disappointed at Hermie for backing down when someone at the NCAA said back off of we will make it worse.

GO WARRIORS, beat the Trojan man.

A guy in a bar leans over to the guy next to him and asks, โ€œWanna hear a USC joke?โ€ The guy next to him replies, โ€œWell, before you tell that joke, you should know something. Iโ€™m 6โ€™ tall, 200 lbs., and Iโ€™m a USC graduate. The guy sitting next to me is 6โ€™2โ€, weighs 225, and heโ€™s a USC graduate. The fella next to him is 6โ€™5โ€ tall, weighs 250, and heโ€™s a USC graduate. Now, you still wanna tell that joke?

The first guy replies: โ€œNaw, not if Iโ€™m gonna have to explain it three times.โ€

  132. follower August 30, 2012 2:36 pm

was there a fan send off for the boys at the school or airport? Pictures anybody?

2 more days to SHOCK DA WORLD.

  133. d1shima August 30, 2012 2:36 pm

Q1: CVS bought Long’s and left the name…for now.

    Q2: Ask your doctor.

  134. d1shima August 30, 2012 2:40 pm

First notable change was the CVS POS system…it sucks. Slowed down all the long-time Long’s cashiers who used to ring up multiple items as such (i.e.-5 @ $0.99=$4.95) but now must scan each item individually. Small thing but it slows it down quite a bit when you’re the 6th in line.

    back to regular programming….

  135. jimmy the lock August 30, 2012 2:42 pm

My doctor said that CVS will keep the Longs name because of name recognition and well, it’s Hawaii.

My doctor also said my cholesterol numbers are superb and blood pressure of 104 over 70 with a resting heart rate of 65 is excellent. That’s why you had me worried. Now I better look twice when crossing the road and entering intersections. I feel a “Final Destination” is in my future. Eerie. Don’t follow a logging truck.

  136. jimmy the lock August 30, 2012 2:43 pm

But now get CVS reward card.

  137. Hodad August 30, 2012 2:44 pm

Starting next year, scholarships will be for 4 years, not one as is currently the case. Will make you think twice about who you offer. Better be good at evaluating 17 year old kids.

  138. jimmy the lock August 30, 2012 2:45 pm

    GO WAHINE!

  139. d1shima August 30, 2012 2:45 pm

…if you following a logging truck in Hawaii

    …you missed the cutoff.

  140. Shoko August 30, 2012 2:47 pm

Isn’t it interesting that SMU’s QBs always leave for E. Washington. First Bo Levi Mitchell, then Kyle Padron.

Might be an upset with the Idaho-EWU game.

  141. jimmy the lock August 30, 2012 2:48 pm

I thought the 4-year scholarships will be optional.

  142. d1shima August 30, 2012 2:48 pm

This what been said in one Southren Calif. newspaper (Will not list the name of the paper). But check out the writer name.

Yet, Schroeder’s quest to start at quarterback for a Division I program didn’t fade, not even after graduating from Duke in three years. With two years eligibility remaining, he decided to transfer, landing at the University of Hawaii, finally realizing his dream Saturday when the Wahines play No. 1 USC at the Coliseum.

  151. d1shima August 30, 2012 3:19 pm

Watching Vandy QB and Aaron’s kid bro, Jordan Rodgers tryna help the Commodores beat a Top Ten team at home for the first time since 1974. They showed how the two brothers’ throwing motion is almost identical.

  159. Ipu Man August 30, 2012 4:00 pm

Green Bay did a lot of no huddle. qb Rogers said it was a “blast”.

BYU may do a “speed up” offense the announcers said.

I wonder if Chow or Kiffen will do no huddle…

BYU freshman qb Hill comes in on 4th down and passes for td…

  171. Ipu Man August 30, 2012 4:46 pm

mctruck, sorry if I offended you. It was not my intention.

I luv your posts. I did not know if UH wears knee braces this game or not.

But did see them in practice. Thought you did too. And maybe guys and

coach decided to use them, maybe not. I am not trying to put you down.

I am trying to talk with you and other tsaikos. Are you angry at me?

  172. Ipu Man August 30, 2012 4:48 pm

Some players on some teams opt to not wear much protection for

various reasons, such as more free movement and/or speed.

  173. Ipu Man August 30, 2012 4:49 pm

sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh. I quit this blog. Bye.

Format question. Anyone else starting to see the blog display as alternating gray and white textbox stripes, with some text (not ones with URLs in them) running off the page? I hope that the 7 p.m. maintenance resolves this. ๐Ÿ™‚

  176. Shoko August 30, 2012 5:03 pm

    Ipu,

Got to have thick skin when on this blog. ๐Ÿ˜‰ No worries, braddah.

Yes, Manley had quite a game with almost 300 yards passing inthe first half.

  177. Shoko August 30, 2012 5:06 pm

If Idaho loses, Akey should be moving up on the coach’s hot seat. Feel bad for him tho as I always like him as a coach.

    Go Warriors!

    Go Niners!

  178. kawika49 August 30, 2012 5:09 pm

    Woman of Alien…

Excellent do the job you’ve done, this web site is admittedly cool with superb data. Time is God’s technique for retaining almost everything from taking place directly. …
