Three and out

Punter Alex Dunnachie and quarterback Cayman Shutter made mistakes, accepted responsibility, were punished by the Honolulu District Court and the UH football team, showed remorse and then made amends.

Now both have learned their suspensions following no-contest pleas to DUI charges are set at three games. They will be cleared to play beginning with the Sept. 28 BYU game.

It was an expensive lesson, and not only in terms of lost playing time. Both are allowed to drive under a permit requiring an ignition lock, which costs about $100 a month. They also have to pay higher insurance premiums.

But so far, they have shown they are deserving of their second chance.

It’s nice that the process for hiring the next AD has started officially. But can we speed this thing along?  Aren’t there fiscal budgets to finalize?

Hawaii is the home of second chances. I love that we are known for not giving up on our kids… It’s a sign of mature understanding, imho.

    Have a great day, everyone!

  5. Naks8 September 13, 2012 6:27 am

Hopefully they come back and contribute

    Liz:

It also should be known that Hawaii is good at giving first chances.

  7. papajoe2 September 13, 2012 6:29 am

I hope that everybody learned their lesson. I too, in my younger years, learned from the mistakes done by my friends and I made some mistakes myself, but luck has it that I came out alright.

  8. d1shima September 13, 2012 6:37 am

    Top X!

    Got chance?

  9. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2012 6:42 am

It will be fun to actually have a game this week. One game in two months just doesn’t cut it.

  10. LizKauai (iPad) September 13, 2012 6:42 am

First chances can happen anywhere any time. Especially wonderful in Hawaii!

  11. gigi-hawaii September 13, 2012 6:42 am

What about the 3rd guy who was arrested? No news about his whereabouts?

  12. gigi-hawaii September 13, 2012 6:44 am

Can’t wait to see Harding punt again this weekend. He made the USC game fun to watch.

  13. AlaWai September 13, 2012 6:45 am

God always looks after his children. He nudges them in directions of righteousness. Disciplines them as they mature. As we grow older He continues to talk to us. If we talk to Him we will hear the same nurturing voice. If we turn away, we are left to our own human frailties. To be one with him is pono. God bless our Warriors. May they learn from this and walk forward in his grace. Imua!

Alema Tachibana’s court hearing is on Oct. 15.

If he wins his case, he can come back.

If not, not sure what happens. Maybe time served as the suspension?

    Aloha Liz!

Glad to hear that the suspension of Alex Dunnachie and Cayman Shutter has been lifted.

    Have a good one!

    Garret, from yesterday’s post

The Lame one tried for 2 because he thought USC would convert, his injured kicker was just an excuse. If he didn’t have a backup kicker ready to kick PATs, he’s the most unprepared coach since… McMackin said he wasn’t ready for Utah St’s backup QB.

  22. Last Call September 13, 2012 7:05 am

The selection for Athletic Director will be another UH three ring circus and like in the past they will make the wrong choice.

Who was the Wahine VB player doing the 200 yard roll on Monday ? Has Shoji adopted Norm Chow’s punishment policy ?

  23. Wes'side Warrior September 13, 2012 7:24 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Glad to see forward progress in all the extracurriculars. Learn and move on!

As far as Kiffin goes… I don’t buy his spin on going for two at all. Even with the sanctions, they are still an elite team/school. As has been stated over and over these past few BCS years, any of their bench-warmers would be starters just about anywhere else. You can’t tell me they only had ONE kicker this whole time.

What I think? Kiffin still has a thing for Coach Chow, and was trying to ram it down his throat any way he could. Can’t tell me their 2nd string kicker sux to the point of no confidence. Being ill-prepared is not the image Kiffin presents. Nope. He can make all the excuses now and spin it all he wants. Our team is young, and will be more experienced a year from now. They’ll remember the taste, and hopefully chalk up the “W” next time they face off. We’ll see… I hope we’ll be home in time for that game!!!

  24. Wes'side Warrior September 13, 2012 7:27 am

    Pomai, I think…

The defense learned immensely from USC, and will come out to prove themselves.

The offense also gained invaluable experience under the bright lights, and will show marked improvement.

The special teams will bust a move, or two.

    UH vs Lamar

  25. Wes'side Warrior September 13, 2012 7:30 am

    And, speaking of Harding…

Wonder why I haven’t seen or heard of his punts following the game? It’s not like every D1 team kicks the way we did, and it was effective, for the most part. I mean, c’mon… kick from the right or left? Had to be highlights somewhere.

  38. Derek September 13, 2012 8:12 am

For some reason, I get the feeling that Lamar will not score on Saturday. Yeah, they beat Prairie View last week, but that doesn’t really count, does it? They lost their first game 41 or 49 to nothing against Louisiana-Lafeyette from the Sun Belt Conference. Coming all the way over to Hawaii, I gotta figure Hawaii around 56-0. Call it as I see it!!!! The defense scores a couple of times. Should be about 35-0 at the half and coast in from there. Good tune up for Nevada next week.

  39. Amazing issues here. I’m very glad to see your article. Thank you a lot and I’m taking a look ahead to contact you. Will you please drop me a mail?

  41. jm2375 September 13, 2012 8:39 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Good to see that Dunnachie’s & Shutter’s good deeds and humility have resulted in shorter suspensions.

From what remember from the Lamar coach’s interview yesterday, they arrive today, will go to a luau, have a practice tomorrow. They leave on Sunday and will have time to enjoy Hawaii and at some point will go to the Arizona Memorial. Seems to me, it’s the usual itinerary for an FCS team when they come here.

(Coach McKnight, OTOH, will be at Side Street tonight, Murphy’s tomorrow & Pancake House on Sunday morning. 😆 )

  42. jm2375 September 13, 2012 8:42 am

    IS IT SATURDAY YET??!!

And the question of the day is, will we be seeing DPK at a t-gate sometime this season? 🙄 😆

    #19,

Spot on. The #1 team in the nation with a coaching staff chalk full of experienced folks doesn’t come prepared with a place kicker that can do field goals/PAT? Or someone trying to be a jackass and going for 2 cuz he can? Hmmm why does one story seem 1000000x more plausible than the other.

So what happened to Alema Tachibana?

  54. kev-1 September 13, 2012 10:20 am

What’s up with the 3 coaches resigning from the AD selection committee? I was actually relieved that they were on the committee to help select the next AD, but now no? That makes me nervous.

    What da scoops?

  55. madeinhawaii September 13, 2012 10:22 am

Hope it’s not because of unethical methods being used that the three coaches are resigning from the AD search committee.

  56. madeinhawaii September 13, 2012 10:24 am

Really sounds like they have someone in mine and simply want a rubber stamp committee. Wonder what the spin will be on this?

  57. manoa September 13, 2012 10:24 am

Wes’side, rugby kickers are not such a novelty– rugby kickers were a big thing three years ago with several teams using the rugby kick and some of those kickers kicked with either foot. But after they changed the rule to treat rugby punters as runners who could be hit or tackled, it reduced their effectiveness as punters. Coaches preferred the high long kick with hang time. Harding can run with the ball and fake the kick, but once teams expect him, they will go after him and reduce his effectiveness.

  58. madeinhawaii September 13, 2012 10:26 am

One coach resigning, I can understand, but THREE, at the same time? That’s a little too high on the coincidence scale.

  59. papajoe2 September 13, 2012 10:28 am

coaches said that they no moa time to be on da committee during their season.

  60. LizKauai September 13, 2012 10:34 am

    Hmmm

“The three coaches on the University of Hawaii athletic director search advisory committee have told Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple they plan to resign their seats.

An announcement from Apple’s office could come as soon as today.

Head football coach Norm Chow, Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji and Wahine basketball coach Laura Beeman were among the 15 members named to the committee last month.

The committee has met twice to begin the process of replacing Jim Donovan, who was reassigned Aug. 12.

Shoji did not attend either meeting due to his team’s morning practices.

It is not known if the three coaches would be replaced.

UH began advertising the AD position Wednesday and said it will start reviewing applications Sept. 21.

The Board of Regents list a salary range of $203,000-$293,000 for the position.”

  61. Last Call September 13, 2012 10:37 am

Like I said here at 7:05am

“The selection for Athletic Director will be another UH three ring circus and like in the past they will make the wrong choice.”

  62. kev-1 September 13, 2012 10:41 am

If I had an opportunity to pick my boss, I’d do it. I think it is more than just time. Maybe they don’t have time to tolerate the way it is being done, and they said “forget this.”

Or maybe not, I don’t know. Just feeling very skeptical since the way the department has been handled lately.

  63. Ha! September 13, 2012 10:43 am

Save Hawaii the time and expense and just give the job Keith Amemiya already. Powers that be intended for him to get it all along.

  64. kev-1 September 13, 2012 10:47 am

Yeah, maybe Amemiya can get us into a new conference. The ILH maybe? OIA?

Just kidding, I know there are a lot of Amemiya supporters here. Really just kidding.

  65. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 13, 2012 10:47 am

In hindsight, making the coaches ex-officio non voting members may have been a alternative worth looking. Oh wells.

  66. SAWARRIOR September 13, 2012 10:49 am

glad to see Dunnachie and Shutter stick it out.

  67. oldtimer808 September 13, 2012 11:08 am

Maybe Coach Chow can use Harding for punting from the 50 yard line and in and use Dunnachie to punt those longer kicks. Harding creates some problems for the punt returners. Punt returners cannot call for a fair catch with that ball bouncing all over the place.

  68. mctruck September 13, 2012 11:09 am

word on the street is that a guy named Herman Frazier is top of the search committee list,

now that the three coaches resigned……..nah,nah, just joking.

Most important thing on my mind is this weeks fb game…I want to see what kind of changes and tweeking the coaches came up with; good attendance at the game too.

  69. jimmy the lock September 13, 2012 11:09 am

The coaches shouldn’t be on the search advisory committee anyway. Especially when the person who gets hired can fire or reprimand them or give them raises. Many workers would like a say in who their boss should be but that is not how things really work.

  70. mctruck September 13, 2012 11:12 am

    oldtimer808,

I like ur idea for Harding, in close and Dunnachie for longer punts. But then again, Dunnachie has to show the pro scouts his entire package.

  71. RedZone September 13, 2012 11:15 am

Scott Harding played in an Australian Rules Football league not Rugby. More kicking accuracy is required and distance is a plus. It is used not only to score goals but also like a pass to a team mate.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUJU2rkU6sg

  72. mo808 September 13, 2012 11:17 am

I think Rock needs to apply for AD…IMHO! If the coaches are happy it would make fans happy too! The athletic program needs to move forward. The way the administration has handled the everything so far just does sit well–just a fiasco. We should be going forward all engines full speed. (okay, just venting)

    Go Warriors! go Wahine!

  73. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2012 11:18 am

    jm’elua’ekolu’ehiku’elima –

  74. mctruck September 13, 2012 11:20 am

I think the coaches should have stood their ground…and just in case the AD tried to fire them in the future, they could always say to the AD, “eh, I helped get you hired”…Awww, never mind.

  75. Buffoman September 13, 2012 11:22 am

What is the projected attendance looking like for the game? I read that it was going to be quite sparse.

Did UH Athletics ever give thought to possibly working with the local high schools to provide buses for their students and bands to fill seats at these games where attendance is projected to be weak?

It would expose those young folks to possibly thinking about going beyond high school to continue their education; demystify UH an bit more by having folks from the UH senate serve as hosts to the students. Get any HS student who wants to go to the game a free pass to attend. I understand the complications involved in who would be responsible for these young people, etc., etc., but somehow, UH has to work to build a fan base and what they are doing now just does not seem to be working, if the attendance projected is going to be as was reported.

  76. oldtimer808 September 13, 2012 11:24 am

Well I don’t think the coaches concerns would be to show our punters total package but to use our players for the most good. Yes mctruck never mind…never good to play that kind of game.

  77. Big C September 13, 2012 11:31 am

There probably are deserving HS students who would like to attend UH game(s) but have no tranportation or means(to afford tickets)to attend the game(s). Maybe if UH/High Schools could get together in providing a bus and free/discounted tickets(from UH students who don’t care to attend UH games), some high school student who is desrving can take their place?? At least one bus(occupancy, 40+ per bus) per high school….we talking generating attendance. imop.

  86. manoa#1 September 13, 2012 11:51 am

#23 keep dreaming they ain’t gonna beat usc in a 100yrs.

  87. John Fitzgerald Byers September 13, 2012 11:53 am

Usually its not favorable to have subordinates on a committee to decide who their next boss will be. However, uh fans, the taxpayers, donors should be vigilant because again what is the goal of upper administration in setting up the lower campus administration?

Are they going to give the job to a over-paid cost cutter or someone that will advance the sports programs at UH?

  88. Warrior Dave September 13, 2012 12:00 pm

Doesn’t matter who is on the AD search committee as Greenwood already knows who she wants.

I’d love to give Keith Amemiya a chance. He impressed the heck out of me when he was the top dog at HHSAA.

Does anyone think a ” name” AD will apply with the salary we paid JD? I don’t think so.

  89. Wes'side Warrior September 13, 2012 12:06 pm

    … not feeding it…

  90. Haleakala September 13, 2012 12:27 pm

I can see the coaches resigning from the search committee. After all, they signed a letter recommending that Rockne Freitas be made the permanent AD. It would have been hard for the coaches to stay on the committee without being accused of being biased.

  91. chopsueyboy September 13, 2012 12:28 pm

    Buffoman

Back in the days of high school early 1970’s,

lettermen got into high school basketball games at H.I.C. for free.

I agree, UH should allow local high school students to attend games for free on low attendance projected games.

#86: They used to say the same thing about BYU…All it takes is one “breakthrough” game and USC will asked to be excused from future games with UH. Notre Dame cancelled future games after we came too close to beating them…

  97. Bowwar September 13, 2012 1:24 pm

Discounted tickets through vendor sponsors are okay, but nobody should get a “free ride” to football games…Typical Hawaii fans, they want “something for nothing”. It’s time for our fans to “step-up” and use their pocketbooks to back-up the team.

UH Students should have an allocated amount of free tickets to each game as part of their student activity fee. Only thing is that they have to show their student ID when entering the stadium with their free ticket. In the old days, too many “cheap-skates” used to use their son/daughter’s student tickets to go to the games.

I am surprised to see some of the predictions for this weekend’s game against Lamar so close.

Even though this is a rebuilding year I think the Warriors are better than that. After all it’s a lower division opponet for goodness sake.

I would be very disappointed in UH if it is close game.

I remember the last time a site streamed NFL games, they got shut down real quick. NFL doesn’t mess around. 😉

  116. HawaiiMongoose September 13, 2012 3:08 pm

Garret, I just saw your post yesterday about Florida State and Maryland having voted against increasing the ACC exit fee. That’s very interesting; it basically confirms that Florida State did have some interest in the Big 12’s summer overtures. Also Maryland’s name has come up in past discussions of potential Big 10 additions. I’m sure the Maryland folks would have loved to keep that possibility open.

But with the $50 million exit fee now in place it’s pretty clear all of the ACC members will be staying put for the foreseeable future.

  117. Garret September 13, 2012 3:20 pm

The #1 team in the nation with a coaching staff chalk full of experienced folks doesn’t come prepared with a place kicker that can do field goals/PAT?

I clearly explained in my earlier posts that their kicker got hurt DURING the game. That means that USC *did* come prepared with a kicker, one that handled their kicking last season without problem.

I’m dropping this issue now but I just hate to have the facts twisted and for people to claim I’m saying something that I clearly did not.

  118. Moocher September 13, 2012 3:21 pm

Here’s a link for the NFL game.

  119. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 13, 2012 3:22 pm

Well looks like UH basically went with a non-voting ex-officio status for the coaches.

    Hindsight 20/20.

  120. Moocher September 13, 2012 3:30 pm

mad at kiffen for running up points? i see it this way…

if that was his agenda he would’ve kept starters in the whole way and made sure usc covered the spread.

and if we can’t let go of that, then i’m still mad at how michigan state and blake ezor showed up the rainbow warriors at the jeep eagle aloha bowl.

  121. WarriorNY September 13, 2012 3:32 pm

    Regarding Kiffin,

Didn’t he go for it on fourth and forever when he could’ve kicked a fg to run up the score? To cover the point spread?

  122. d1shima September 13, 2012 3:41 pm

    I’d much rather focus forward.

    Chris Ault…. 👿

  123. d1shima September 13, 2012 3:42 pm

    How’s these Rutgers helmets!

  124. Moocher September 13, 2012 3:44 pm

what i meant was first string would’ve stayed in the whole game if he really wanted to run up the score. Logically, if you wanted to send a message to your opponent or anyone else (top 25 voters), first you cover the spread, then you tack on more points to drive that message home.

    IMHO 🙂

  125. d1shima September 13, 2012 3:45 pm

    Y’know? Ault, Chris. 😈

Today’s Maui News reports the passing of Ed Tanji, Maui News journalist retired. Over the years that I have known Ed, he has always been willing to help the kids of Maui. Maui has lost a true son and I lost a friend. May you find your way through the heavens and thanks for being our friend.

  141. el burro sabio September 13, 2012 6:54 pm

    Garret,

No one is attacking what you said, rather, what the Lame coach said. I don’t know what IWWTHM is saying, or rather, asking. I’m saying that using an injured kicker as an excuse to go for 2 is a Lame excuse. He should have the balls to just say he went for 2 because he thought his vaunted team would make it (rather than failing 3 times). I’m saying that if he didn’t have a *backup* kicker ready to go, he was very unprepared. I doubt that he was unprepared, so to me that just leaves him with being a liar about his motives. And I will leave it at that.

  142. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 13, 2012 7:05 pm

    #141,

Ok, I’ll spell it out. It is 100000x more likely that Lame wanted to go for 2 rather than not being prepared with a backup kicker, somewhere, anywhere on the team.

  143. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 13, 2012 7:08 pm

Moving on from Lame and on to the little general. Oh wait, Lamar first!

  144. papajoe2 September 13, 2012 7:23 pm

  147. tommui September 13, 2012 8:07 pm

Whitey: Sorry to hear about Ed Tanji. I remember that you talked highly about him when you were driving me around.

  148. Ipu Man September 13, 2012 8:08 pm

Condolences to all of Ed Tanji’s family and friends.

This may be a no-no, but his write-up in the Maui News says:

“…Tanji first broke into the Hawaii journalism scene while interning at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. It later turned into a part-time position in 1968.

After serving a tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, he returned to Hawaii in 1970 to complete his degree and was hired by the Honolulu Advertiser as a copy editor.

Throughout his career, Tanji covered many stories. He was among the first reporters to write about the Protect Kaho’olawe Ohana and the movement to stop military bombing of Kahoolawe.

In a retirement interview with The Maui News in 2009, Tanji reflected on his reporting of Kahoolawe and said that his trademark ponytail he sported back then served as an icebreaker with members of activist groups who had an easier time speaking to him versus reporters with stuffed shirts.”

    May he rest in peace.

The other end of the spectrum is the helicopter parent. Yup, friends tell me the parents are at the university level and at work, too. Disgusting people who make excuses for everything their kids do or do not do.

wafan ~ Sadly, I must confess…I was a helicoptah parent. 1st it was the Huey, then later on we flew on the Blackhawks. My brother-in-law flew the Apache. We are guilty as charged, and await assignment to your detention hall.

  205. mo808 September 14, 2012 7:00 am

Koakane. I did at first but thought maybe too many on when I was trying to view. I also updated my APS then updated my iPhone to computer just to make sure my phone was working right. Just tried again and website video works for me now. I like’d what Coach had to say about new tradition and will definitely be there to cheer them on! Go Warriors!

  206. Kekoa September 14, 2012 7:00 am

BHF2 ~ I saw your cousin yesterday (the KHS VP) as he ‘paraded’ past my hale with the entire student body and the band! It’s Homecoming week at the neighborhood publik skool.

I’m not going to get into the public vs private school debate, but the fact that this HS was built at a cost of 100 million dollars speaks volumes for how much this community wanted the best for their children. They have managed to maintain this huge campus, and make timely improvements over the years. He has given me the facts on this educational factory.

The important thing is the forward thinking involved in teaching these children. The traditional classroom methods are constantly upgraded by the teachers, and some very innovative lessons are taught there.

The sports facilities are top notch, and some quality athletes have gone on to top notch programs around the country. I can look out my window and see them make those improvements on the stadium every year.

Some of my neighbors have children attending, and I was happy to see them all happily participating in the parade. What surprised us was the Homecoming King yell out a hearty “Hi Aunty!” to Diana as she stood stunned at our little neighborhood keed, all grown up!

I am continually impressed by how many students they have placed into colleges and universities around the country. There was one particular year that they placed more graduates than many of the private schools on island! A recent Graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who was once a star QB here proves that his education was the true test of the quality of his education here.

So pump out your chest beeg Hilo and congratulate your cousin for doing a mighty fine job here next to his ceded lands neighbor.

  207. Kekoa September 14, 2012 7:08 am

Pahtna!…take it easy on da kope dis morning. You must be drinking da hi-tess bran!

  208. d1shima September 14, 2012 7:21 am

    Great Morning All!

    IS IT SATURDAY YET?

    Are You Ready?

  209. Kekoa September 14, 2012 7:43 am

    D-1 ~

    I are READY!

I just want to see a good, injury-free game. One that we can enjoy watching these Warriors blow out the carbon and get that motor running at peak power!

  210. Deloras Moder September 14, 2012 7:44 am

Nice post. I learn something more challenging on different blogs everyday. It will always be stimulating to read content from other writers and practice a little something from their store. I’d prefer to use some with the content on my blog whether you don’t mind. Naturally I’ll give you a link on your web blog. Thanks for sharing.

I cant find the right web page to go to, to find out when the last time my roof was done or fixed. And I need to find out where to go to, to get this information about my house..

  214. Kekoa September 14, 2012 8:24 am

It must be really tuff for these spammers to wander around looking for a blog to call home. I just wish they would just continue past our WB and not clutter the place.

  215. jojo ® September 14, 2012 8:28 am

But Kekoa, some of their info is very informative!!
