Thinking green

Despite the implementation of an athletics fee — which won’t kick in until January — the UH athletic department continues to to be mindful of the budget.

Warrior football coach Greg McMackin’s decision to eliminate team movie outings on the eve of games is just the first step in cutting costs. What’s more, McMackin still is voluntarily taking a 7 percent pay cut through June 30, 2011 — which amounts to $77,004 annually and $141,174 for the 22-month period.

Also, earlier this year, each of UH’s sport programs was  asked to raise $25,000 annually to offset expenses. There will be no penalties for failing to meet the goal.

The latest revenue stream for college sports will be to help sell renewable energy to consumers. Fans of a school can switch from their electric companies to 100% renewable energy at competitive prices, receiving sports merchandise, memorabilia, ticket discounts, etc. This only works in deregulated markets.

That article about outsourcing certain services to generate more$$…is interesting? Why would UH consider a bidder in Texas who does similar work for another bunch of WAC schools??…I don’t see much said about glowing financial rewards being touted here?!
Probably has Benson’s finger-prints all over it.

  16. Garret July 28, 2010 4:57 am

    mctruck,

Benson and the WAC office have *nothing* to do with outsourcing UH’s marketing! Right now UH has to staff an entire office to market itself–I’m guessing that UH is looking at outsourcing the work because it would reduce costs and bring in new revenue. When you support more than 1 school, the costs for each school drop and the advertising rights can be combined to get bigger advertising deals.

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

I think I have a football fever as cautiously I prepare with a keen watchful eye !

Today athletic game is played at a higher level with MANY superior athletes from
ALL over the country that can run, jump and make quick abitilities with their bodies
while they adjust a CONFIDENCE that you must have to compete at this division 1 level !

The “COACHING” has stepped it up with the ariel game enduring excitement to loyal fans
while the running game has not taken a back seat as a balance attack is still required
to WIN and WIN BIG at any level despite the rigors of MONEY that is always an issue with
winning as NO College coach will last long in their job IF they cannot WIN !

DEFENSIVELY will be the key word to this Warrior football season as this Warrior team
has to show up on ALL sides of the ball especially against the run as good running
teams over the years has wreck haovic on us in this area as a PASS RUSH is needed
to stir excitement to the fans as nothing gets the Hawaii fans more PUMPED up then
seeing a “jawing” tackle or BIG HIT !

So “rise and shine” Warrior Nation as a good month away we will finally strap it
up and start this season rolling as for this team to be successful the FANS must
come out and cheer LOUDLY as it will take ALL of us to reunite together and WILL
this team to VICTORY as I like it just like that !

Simpy The Best, Better Then All The Rest !

    GO WARRIORS !

  58. Garret July 28, 2010 9:17 am

    mctruck,

UH is choosing among 2 or more options for outsourcing its marketing. UH doesn’t care what anybody else in the WAC is doing–UH is looking to see if outsourcing could make it more money.

CBS College Sports Properties already generates a good amount of advertising revenue in Aloha Stadium and they are the ones who is getting the new scoreboard for Aloha Stadium with no money coming from the Stadium or UH for it.

Learfield represents *50* schools including 7 in the WAC. The schools would only choose them if they made money for them. The 43 non-WAC schools must have good ($$$) reasons to use them, especially when there are other companies that also compete in that market. Pretty much every school is being squeezed by their budget, so they would only be outsourcing their marketing if it made economic sense for them.

  59. Pomai July 28, 2010 9:24 am

#48 Kekoa – Hooka Dukiss, an old an wise Dr. back in the hills of ByGod West Virginey told me one time that a good temporary fix is four to five helpings of good Hawaiian food at one sitting. I tried it once but the fix failed due to my inability to make it pass the third helping.

    Re-Football fever

To me, the anticipation, excitement, pageantry and emotion leading up to a Warrior game is what precipitates football fever.

Of all the fevers this is the one that you hope is contagious.

New format for the 2011 WAC Basketball Tournament that will be played in Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Apparently, this was suggested by Boise State’s head coach Leon Rice and would mirror the West Coast Conference’s format. Hopefully, we get into the tournament this year and leave Boise State out and looking in.

Under the format, the tournament will start Wednesday with two men’s and two women’s games pitting the No. 5 seed against No. 8 and No. 6 vs. No. 7.

The winners of those games would advanced to play the No. 4 and No. 3 seeds, respectively, on Thursday. The winners of those games then advance to Friday’s semifinals against the top two seeds.

The championship games are played Saturday.

  70. Garret July 28, 2010 10:02 am

    mctruck,

Believe me, I think that Benson is a horrible commissioner and he’s done a lot of things that have been bad for UH. However, this is not one of the things I’d blame him for…Universities around the country have already been outsourcing their marketing departments.

Anything that could save UH money and increase revenue is a good thing, so I’m glad that JD is exploring this option. UH might decide to just keep McNamara in charge of marketing Athletics…but it isn’t bad to look at its options.

  71. Garret July 28, 2010 10:03 am

Off topic–I’ve posted a lot of articles from New Scientist Magazine as part of the free play links. Today New Scientist Magazine published an article about my work.

  72. Shoko July 28, 2010 10:06 am

Seems the sibling rivalry between Boise State and Idaho has turned nasty.

Boise State president Bob Kustra said of Idaho’s fan culture:
“It’s a culture that is nasty, inebriated and civilly doesn’t give our fans the respect that any fan should expect when visiting an away team. … I don’t think at Boise State you’re going to find that, so for me personally, when I read what Pete said I knew, I knew.

“For me, this is not about football. For me, this is a cultural issue. It’s about fans having to learn how to treat other fans and universities. What bothers me more than anything else, is that the fans are not about denigrating our athletic program. … What bothers me personally is the denigration of our academic programming. That’s what I simply can’t tolerate.”

  77. Garret July 28, 2010 10:48 am

The MWC’s Commissioner spoke with the media today (they are having their Football Media event now) and he noted that their contract with VS ends after this season. The MWC is looking at other options and has already talked with *ESPN*. This tidbit in conjunction with Karl Benson’s admission that ESPN will make changes to the WAC TV deal after BSU leaves at the end of this season means that the MWC will be available at the exact time that ESPN gets to change their deal with the WAC!

This is *bad* timing for the WAC. If ESPN outbids VS and the other channels for the rights to have the first picks of MWC games, then ESPN could end up really cutting back the dollars and exposure of the WAC. ESPN would still have the rights so the WAC couldn’t get their games on another channel either.

Hopefully, for the WAC’s sake, some other channel will outbid ESPN for the MWC games. If that happens, then the WAC will get a reduced TV contract but ESPN will still need the WAC for their late time slot…if ESPN gets the MWC, they might just keep showing BSU games and the WAC schools would lose their TV exposure.

If the MWC really wanted to kill the WAC, they would sign a TV deal starting in 2011 with ESPN. I’m guessing that VS will offer more money (like the last time) and ESPN have to turn to the WAC (like the last time).

  78. Mike July 28, 2010 10:52 am

  82. Shoko July 28, 2010 11:10 am

    Garret,

    Got a couple of questions.

If the MWC gets their BCS bid in 2012, wouldn’t it be wise for the conference to agree with a short term TV deal until 2012 and reconsider their options with ESPN when they indeed become a BCS conference?

Read the article that involved your work. Wouldn’t the use K(u)-band solve the problem of line-of-sight limitations? Or is this not cost effective for ground-type communications? Mind you, I’m not savvy about smart antenna array technology, but I do find your work interesting.

  83. Garret July 28, 2010 11:23 am

    Shoko,

The MWC could do a short-term deal, but they are more likely to do 5+ years like everybody else. Becoming an AQ conference will give them extra bowl money, but it may not affect their regular-season TV deal. It isn’t like someone in Georgia will start watching the MWC if they become an AQ conference. They might have a clause that they would get a small increase if they get AQ status, but TV deals are based on ratings and the number of TV sets in the states where they have teams…that won’t change if they get AQ status.

  84. Garret July 28, 2010 11:24 am

    Mike,

I can’t believe that Ron Lee is coaching at Kalani either. He sure doesn’t mind a challenge and loves coaching for him to invest that among of time for free.

I don’t have the fever yet.

  86. Garret July 28, 2010 11:29 am

    Shoko,

When you talk about little ground robots or other small unmanned systems, the size/weight/cost limitations would prevent Ku band from being feasible. The other big thing is that interference (like from our IED jammers and other systems) exists in ALL frequencies that are much stronger than the signal, so there is no way to get around the interference by changing frequency.

My solution is to use beamforming…think of it as a mathematical way to have the signal coming from a spot ignored. Luxury cars use this to cancel engine noise and the Droid X has 3 microphones and uses 2 of them to cancel noise. The big difference here is that each robot has just 1 antenna and they work together to cancel noise and increase the reliability and quality of their wireless communications.

  87. Garret July 28, 2010 11:35 am

Google thinks that it might have a way to save the newspaper industry. They are looking at a model where Android smartphone users pay $10 per year for access to newspaper articles. With a billion Android owners expected in projections, that would generate $10 billion for the newspaper industry. From the Wall Street Journal:

“If we have a billion people using Android, you think we can’t make money from that?” Schmidt asked rhetorically. All it would take, he said, is $10 per user per year. Among other things, Google might earn such sums from selling access to digital content from newspapers.

A billion people paying for newspaper content? Sounds good to us.

If Kalani wins one game this year, I’m painting a giant “K” on my face. Our teams didn’t win a single game (pre-season or regular season; no post season, obviously) when I was there. First “win” came a year or two after I graduated — a game Kaiser ended up forfeiting after the fact due to an ineligible player. We partied like it was the Super Bowl. Take that PP!

  108. Garret July 28, 2010 12:51 pm

    Jun Tao,

I like your thinking about Fox Sports, and the would be a good alternative to ESPN for the WAC. Trouble is, ESPN owns the TV rights for the WAC until 2016-2017. Given the small amount of money ESPN will have to pay the WAC after BSU leaves, they can just hold on to the WAC’s rights to keep it away from Fox and others.

    Old Diver,

An energy company is partnering up with some colleges to create competition in the marketplace–they offer consumers a choice for electricity and natural gas in deregulated markets (14 states have some form of power deregulation). For example, Texas Longhorns Energy will be available to consumers in less than a month and if it was possible we could someday buy Warriors Energy. The electricity is generated from 100% renewable energy and is priced competitively.

For fans, changing their energy provider is like changing their telecom carrier, and the program will be advertised inside of stadiums, in programs, and by web/tv/radio ads. Every house that signs up with the energy carrier will earn money for the University and fans will get merchandise, memorabilia, access to events, ticket discounts and other benefits as incentives.

ST, with Mack taking a 7% pay cut til the end of June, is JD doing the same? Just wondering who else on the staff is taking a pay cut.

  125. Garret July 28, 2010 1:43 pm

    mctruck,

In addition to the 7 WAC schools mentioned earlier (every school except for NMSU and UH), Learfield communications also takes care of the marketing for schools like:

    Alabama
    Wisconsin
    Purdue
    Oregon State
    Colorado
    Oklahoma
    Miami
    Penn State
    Texas Tech
    Army

When they are bidding for the UH contract they will have a *lot* of proven $$$ generation examples to show. That is the Texas-based company you were concerned about regarding UH marketing. After reading up on it, I am more impressed with them than I was before today.

  126. jm2375 (Backflip) July 28, 2010 1:45 pm

And I have football news from the Nation’s Capitol. We took the Capitol tour today. I wore my UH shirt and as I was going thru security, a Capitol police officer mentioned that UH is looking at his nephew, who lives in Idaho. Kid is 6’4 250 lbs as a *freshman*. Possibly projected at center.

  127. Garret July 28, 2010 1:46 pm

    gigi,

JD took the 7% pay cut *before* Mack spoke at last year’s WAC Football Preview event. When they announced Mack’s salary reduction they said that he would be taking the same 7% pay cut that JD had already agreed to and that the rest of the Athletic Department would be asked to take. It is a voluntary thing so I’ve heard that not everybody took the pay cut (I think people earning less than $40k per year were excluded from being asked to take the pay cut), but JD was the first person to do so to set the example.

  128. A-House July 28, 2010 1:55 pm

haha. I never put my face on, cause who am I trying to kid, at my age?

WDoc, I agree that public restrooms don’t tend to be as clean as one’s own bathroom.

In fact, that might be the clincher to opt for PPV.

  161. gigi-hawaii July 28, 2010 3:33 pm

jm2375, there are underground cables in the next neighborhood (Salt Lake), but when the area underground got flooded, guess what, no electricity!

So wires underground don’t guarantee power.

  162. gigi-hawaii July 28, 2010 3:35 pm

on the other hand, poles do topple, resulting in no power also. This probably happens more frequently.

    A-House,

#131 ~ Carl Clapp is not the person responsible for drumming up donations. He handles a lot of the administrative stuff.

If you’re talking about local donations that would be the responsibility of Alvin Katahara, ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue, who works for the UH Foundation, but is housed in the Athletics office area.

McNamara is the external/corporate marketing guy.

Keith Amemiya is the secretary for the Board of Regents which is a good place for him to be.

    Hey RainbowCliff,

I’m not sure of your specific goals regarding a tennis trip to the islands. As you know, the weather is great year round–though the chance of rain is higher during the winter season. If I was from Southern California and was planning a trip, I would schedule the trip around Sept 2 when USC plays Hawaii…which really is not that far away. I’m sure your group has a fair amount of USC supporters. Not only that, the US Open (tennis) is running from Aug 30 – Sep 12. In between playing tennis, running around the island, and checking out the USC game, you could be getting together in the hotel to watch the early rounds of the Open. How fun. Not only that, you could join the Tsai-kos for the USC tailgate. Wow. Why didn’t you ask me earlier?

Feature article on Chad Owens, who is about to face the team that traded him right before the season begins. The news about why Chad was traded is starting to leak out.

Bruno Burnoski, Owens’s Florida-based agent, told a Toronto reporter via email the Als wanted to cut his client’s salary to $42,000 from $70,000. Another source told The Gazette the Als wanted to suspend Owens, meaning they would retain his rights. Predictably, he balked at both potential scenarios.

  174. Curt July 28, 2010 6:02 pm

    Rainbow Cliff,

As I mentioned earlier, reserving court time will be an issue for you and your group. If you want to just stop by some courts and wait your turn, the nearest ones in Waikiki are at Kapiolani Park and Diamond Head. Don’t know if the military will allow you to use the Hale Koa/DeRussy courts. The courts at Ala Moana Park are just a little bit further away.

  175. Garret July 28, 2010 6:02 pm

Chad’s head coach has a nice quote about Chad…I agree that he’s a true Warrior.

“But Chad’s made for this league. He brings a warrior’s attitude and wants to play. He’s not afraid and is fearless. He has brought that mentality every time he touches the ball. Offensively, he gives us something we didn’t have. He’s quick and catches the ball. We’re slowly evolving him into our offence.”

  176. Curt July 28, 2010 6:05 pm

    Thanks gigi.

  177. Garret July 28, 2010 6:05 pm

Article about how Sol Elimimian is doing so well at LB that his team may go from 2 LBs to a 3 LB defense. That would be great for Adam Leonard, since if his team uses 3 LBs then he has a much better chance to play.

It may not show Friday when they play the Edmonton Eskimos, but at some point the Lions may consider adding a third traditional linebacker to their inventory of defensive packages.

“We’ve got to get him back on the field,” McKenzie said of the 23-year-old rookie, who watched practice for a second straight day with an ankle injury suffered when he tried to make a tackle on Andre Durie of the Toronto Argonauts in Friday’s 24-20 loss.

“He’s a great kid. We talked pretty much all week going over things for last week. It’s too bad he’s hurt and both of us can’t be on the field.”

  178. gigi-hawaii July 28, 2010 6:11 pm

Garret, this green energy program sounds like a good idea. I have to imagine though that government will have to regulate third party use of the public utility power lines just like here. Without government regulations Hawaiian Electric would not buy power from third party power companies. As it is Hawaiian Electric is resisting buying power back from business and home owners. I hope this is something UH can take advantage of.

    Re-Michelle Wie

Tomorrow she takes to the RICHO Womens British Open. Tee off time for her is 11:48 (UK time?), which I believe is 1:48 Hawaii time. What I gathered from the web is that it seems like her putting is letting her down this year, where she ranks on the tour at 136th in putting. Last week at her tournament in France she changed to a cross-handed putting style for the last three rounds. Cross handed putting, what does that mean? Anyway a quick check of the tv listings shows that ESPN will be carrying the tournament starting at 3 am Hawaii time (Thursday morning). Am I going to be up then? Probably not.

  190. Shoko July 28, 2010 9:01 pm

Former Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli is a step closer to landing at Mississippi, with Rivals.com site Rebel Grove reporting late Wednesday that Masoli has been admitted to graduate school. It’s possible he could play for Ole Miss this season as a walk-on.

Coach Houston Nutt is being careful about the proposal, according to various media reports, although he likely would be overjoyed to add a former Heisman Trophy candidate to an offense in need of an experienced quarterback. Nutt wants the situation settled by this weekend, according to Kyle Veazey of The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Miss.

Masoli is expected to make a formal visit to Ole Miss as soon as this weekend, a source told ESPN.com.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

You know, I would like it if there had been a lot more blogs like this one, I really appreciate this article placed here

  230. Huey Figueredo August 6, 2010 12:25 am

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Do note that the computer must be on in order to supply power to the USB port and charge the Sansa. It should take about 5 hours to completely charge the Sansa.

yeah, simply put it’s just a cultural thing, but insisting that the length of american movies is determined by some sort of national A.D.D. is absurd.the average length of movies today is 2 to 2 1/2 hours easily.where as going back as recently as 10 years or so the average length of a "hollywood" feature was 85 to 100 minutes long, and the 2 hour plus mark was reserved for those considered "epics",the godfather, schindler’s list, gladiator etc..the length of "american" films has most certainly increased, anything under 2 hours today is abnormally short.

wtf? caste system doesn’t exist now. colleges happen to note down your caste as if you happen to come from a lower one they’d not accept any fee from you and if bollywood did that they’d be sued. you’d go to jail if you abuse some one from lower caste.

  303. search engine submission company August 22, 2010 2:32 pm

Search engine optimization is a pretty involved process and methods and opinions can sometimes differ. All search engines use different algorithms to rank how websites are displayed and they are usually kept secret, but some of it is known and can be inferred. Older search engines were much easier to exploit (such as Infoseek) as they often only considered a single page so repetition of keywords and placement of terms could bump you to the top. Newer search engines such as Google use other factors often beyond your control to ensure that the top results are more relevant and trustworthy. There are entire sites and books devoted to search engine optimization which provide various tips, but a lot of it just takes time. There’s no single trick to use.

It all depends on your age, make and model of car and engine size. Alot of dealers offer a years free insurance on small cars such as corsa’s but it involves buying a brand new car.

Absolutely not. I have a strong preference for natural beauty. With a woman who is beautifully made up, I always kind of wonder what she "really" looks like. Besides, true beauty is in the soul and reflected in the eyes . . . at least in my view.

I have the garmin also… Everytime I turn it on it says searching for satellites, and it takes a whlie (like 7 mins) for it to find them, but after that it works perfect. If yours just says searching for sattelites, I would take it back and get a new one…. Maybe its a defect?

Do you think she’s not producing enough milk? Her milk supply will build back up between feedings. I wouldn’t worry unless the puppies don’t seem to be gaining weight. Good luck.
