Thinking big

As The Advertiser’s Dayton Morinaga reported today, Nebraska’s Walter Roese and BYUH’s Brandyn Akana are the targeted front-runners for positions on basketball coach Gib Arnold’s staff.

Both, like Arnold, are skilled recruiters with global contacts.

Going the international route to supplement recruiting is a practical approach for UH. It worked in the early 2000s in helping the Rainbow Warriors earn back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths.

But the economic situation is different now. Will UH give Arnold the resources to recruit internationally?

Happy birthday wishes to Warrior Mojo and Ian.

JD will HAVE to give Gib Arnold the resources to recruit internationally,

in order to help the program.

  4. d1島 March 26, 2010 8:24 am

Will a modem and an international call plan suffice?

    Happy birthday, Warrior Mojo!

    Happy birthday, Ian!

Good luck to Coach Gib on the recruiting & hiring circuit.

  7. Stephen Tsai March 26, 2010 8:28 am

    d1島:
You would think it would, since that’s how some of the other programs recruit. For instance, UH never saw Jonas Umlauft play in person during the recruiting process.
But Gib said he wants to see guys in person. He said it’s important to see how they react to bad calls, and such.
By the way, he’s going to be Gib for a while. I know we’re all past the past, but “Coach Arnold’ evokes too much of the past.

  8. Stephen Tsai March 26, 2010 8:30 am

I think Jarinn Akana would be a good addition. But he’s got too much going on in L.A. right now.

    “react to bad calls”?

Sounds like some of the old crunching papers by the handset as you talk to the boss…”What? I think we got a bad connection…”

    😳

or am I the only one who did that?

    KHON TV news last night…..

Is Joe Moore the most arrogant man in Hawaii TV history? We all know that Joe loves to get off topic and go on tangents during the newscast. Well, last night took the cake. Apparently, he was not happy about the lighting in the background…..he kept saying that it looked like a light coming off the top of his head. Well, with two minutes left to go in the newscast……right before his “finally tonite” segment, he instructs John Veneri to get up from his seat and tells him to MOVE A PALM TREE to block the light behind him…..all during the LIVE NEWS CAST. YOu should have seen the look on Justin Cruz and John Veneri’s face when the news concluded. Man, after watching this, I had to shake my head and utter to myself, “Addowknow Joe.”

    BIK

aren’t those asst. coaches mormon? it doesn’t bother me one way or another as i beleive in freedom of religion, but will it hurt recruiting if all the coaches were mormon? might have a smaller recruiting pool. i’m just assuming that since the 2 other assistant candidates has ties to BYU or BYUH that they are mormons.

  27. kaimiloa March 26, 2010 9:14 am

I’ll be in Brazil this summer. I was going to be scouting women’s volleyball types but for a few free meals I could help Coach Arnold, too.

  28. Garret March 26, 2010 9:15 am

Given what UH has paid assistant basketball coaches in the past (much below big-budget schools), getting both Roese and Akana would be a real coup for Gib. Isn’t Gib earning less (if that $240k figure I read is correct) than some assistant coaches elsewhere? Maybe Gib took less money so that he would have more money for his assistant coaches.

Dramatically increasing the recruiting budget would help the program of course, but when everything else is getting cut that could be a hard sell. Maybe certain boosters who supported Gib’s candidacy for head coach might be asked to donate specifically to increase the recruiting budget? Since they are invested in Gib’s success, they might be willing to provide Gib with the budget needed for recruiting.

Glad Coach Gib is bringing in guys who know how to recruit and got ties overseas. I can see his vision in trying to recruit the best possible players to play for UH. Not settling for medicore talent to fill roster spots will pay off huge in a year or two. If I was Coach Gib I wouldn’t retain half the roster from last year except for maybe Bill Amis and Zane Johnson. Obviously it’ll be hard to replace almost an entire team so I give Williams, Lay, and Hiram Thompson a chance too, but they need to vastly improve. I just hope we get some talented bigs and a true point guard coming in. Jordan Coleman seems like a talent but needs at least a redshirt year to work on his skills and bulk up. IMO

    BIK,

Remember the “echo” incident with Joe MO?

A few years ago, he flipped out and the sound set up. The news opened and right off the bat and after a few words there was this audible echo originating from the studio and everyone at home could hear it. So Moore flips out, throws his pen on the desk and says “we’re going to commercial, after two ‘damn’ weeks we cannot get this straight?!?!?!?! I don’t care, GO TO COMMERCIAL”. Then he proceeds to drink from his coffee mug and says nothing for about 10 seconds until the producers, I guess, are forced into taking a VERY early commercial break.

    WAC Softball Opens TODAY.
    6pm
    Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium
LIVE on K5 and on ESPN 1420.

    Wahine vs San Jose State.

    From WAC Softball Blogspot:

With 23 and 22 wins, respectively, San Jose State and Hawai’i top the WAC in non-conference victories. The Rainbow Wahine will be completing a 21-game homestand this weekend.

    Hawai’i

Best wins: Cal, Stanford, UNLV, East Carolina (2), Lipscomb (3), DePaul.

Quality losses: Cal (2), Stanford, DePaul, Washington (2), Arizona, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Georgia Tech.

Bad loss: None and/or McNeese State.

Analysis: Of Hawai’i’s quality wins, all but one have come in Honolulu. The Wahine played the WAC’s fewest number of non-conference road games and are 0-4 vs. ranked teams away from the islands. The loss at home to McNeese State isn’t the worst thing in the world, but the Cowgirls are only 6-6 in the Southland Conference. The overall profile is very good though and — like Fresno State — the vast majority of the losses are to Top 25 powers. Hawai’i scheduled smart and is the only WAC team able to get the Pac-10 powers to routinely go to their home. Who doesn’t want to go to paradise? Scheduling seven home games against Cal, Stanford and Washington not only helps the RPI, but even when you go 2-5 in those games, you get credit for two quality wins. Other WAC teams usually get only one shot against those types of teams and have to do it on a neutral field. NCAA outlook: Good.

    San Jose State

Best wins: Oklahoma, Virginia, Charlotte (2).

    Quality losses: Texas, BYU, UNLV.

Bad losses: Cal State Bakersfield, Utah (2), New Mexico.

Analysis: The Spartans have the WAC’s best record (23-8) at this point, but may have only the fourth- or fifth-best at-large NCAA profile. The overall schedule strength isn’t there and too many of the wins are over bad teams. Not helping matters are a home loss to Bakersfield, along with losses to Utah (two by run-rule) and New Mexico, the only two teams in the Mountain West with losing records. Perhaps more than any other team in the conference though, the Spartans could gain credibility by finishing near the top in the league race. San Jose State also has a key April 21 date with Stanford. A win against the Cardinal late in the season could reap rewards come NCAA selection time. NCAA outlook: So-so. A gaudy record plus a top three WAC finish may be enough for the Spartans to snag a bid.

Years ago when Joe Moore was a sportscaster, I thought he was entertaining. After listening to him regularly throw barbs at June Jones and hearing many stories of his bad behavior, I know longer watch his newscasts. Very sad and disrespectful.

  58. al March 26, 2010 12:40 pm

on monday it will be confirmed as to who is the first hired asst coach. my guess is it will be roese as an associate head coach. monday because the human resource office reopens then.

i believe he will get the lion’s share of the asst coach money pool. brandyn akana is a great pickup, young and energetic with far reaching ties. having his brother mentor him is also a great asset.

the gibber did mention that he did consult with jarrin akana early in the week.

  61. al March 26, 2010 12:45 pm

so it is being rumored that a mbb returnee is strongly considering another school.

i am concerned that hiram thompson has yet to make a public statement about his intentions and/or any opinion regarding the new coach. although he only has one year left, he could still redshirt one year. but, it doesn’t make sense to me that he would especially since his buddy is bill amis.

  62. Kazz March 26, 2010 12:45 pm

I’d pay to see Joe Moore ask Robert Kekaula to move a palm tree for him.

    Bumbai he kona learn.

  63. Curt March 26, 2010 12:47 pm

Maybe that should be Gib’s theme song. Ha-ha.

Hiram seems like such a good character guy with a lot of class and a true “team” player.

He would have backed up ANY coach that got hired.

    (‘cept for Bolla)

  65. wafan March 26, 2010 12:51 pm

Everyone continuing to enjoy the Kuhio Day feed?

Dang. Tough day to have conferences — I kept thinking about the buffet all day. At least I did not drool.

    Much.

    I think.

  66. Curt March 26, 2010 12:52 pm

Kekaula could place the palm tree on top of his head or wherevas so the light don’t shine there. Would that help?

  67. Curt March 26, 2010 12:55 pm

Losing Hiram Thompson would not be good. Hiram, we hope you’ll stay and play for home team. Thanks for playing injured and being a true Warrior.

  72. al March 26, 2010 1:14 pm

then again, they are saying that xi is leaving after he graduates this may.

We met Guy Hagi one day at the tennis courts. Nice, cool-looking guy in his shades. On camera, I don’t why he wears those spectacles; it makes him look nerdish.

  75. NorthShoreFan March 26, 2010 1:18 pm

    Alojas Tsaikos…
Lot of great ideas for mbb. We got to remember though, we are looking for a contender and hoping to do this with a manini budget. Location has a lot to do since we cannot have people drive over and we cannot drive over for recruiting and etc. International recruiting? Depends on how much contacts we have overseas. How we get Ji, Kurtz, Savo, Puida etc.?
Can do a lot of things but the driver needs to have those assets or be able to develop them.
I’m looking at a three year period before we get any type of consistency and then maybe being in position to contend.
Lots of great names being put out there for coaches but can we compensate them? Not every one out there will be willing to live in paradise on a shoestring budget. If Gib can have some success I hope we can generate more resources to put together a quality mbb program.

  76. Curt March 26, 2010 1:25 pm

Hey Liz. .. David and I need ur help! We have some things amazing possibilities beginning to happen based on the Hawaii book (Hawai’i Warrior Football: A Story of Faith, Hope and Redemption).

The “big shots” however need a little extra convincing that this book is not strictly directed at die hard football loving men! That women love this book also.

To me, our story beats The Blind …Side and we need them to know you don’t need to know anything really about football to understand and fall in love with the characters and the stories within these pages! This is an amazing story that needs to be seen!

If u feel compelled or any other women u know that have been touched by this book would u email us how it affected you as a woman?

They just threw this at us today and we need to have these emails today’s if possible. You can send the email to Lauriebethmiller@Gmail.com

Thanks Liz… this story is not yet done and David and I will see to it the world hears our story!

  80. Curt March 26, 2010 1:58 pm

    NorthShoreFan,

I thought I remember reading that Ji was in a camp run by former UH coach, Bruce O’Neill. Getting old…can’t remember everything these days.

Bruce was a great recruiter. He pretty much got the Fab Five, Artie Wilson, Tom Henderson, etc. I remember that we almost got Richard Washington til John Wooden stepped in. I remember being at the airport with Bruce for the arrival of a highly-recruited high school player. You may have heard of him. His name was Moses Malone. But, he never showed up (that day). I believe he skipped college and went directly to the pros.

  81. al March 26, 2010 2:04 pm

bruce was one hella recruiter. he’s not happy that ji wasn’t given enough help to improve and/or get in the game. you could see his progression in the last 7 games that a dormant potential was lying in wait.

  82. Curt March 26, 2010 2:06 pm

    LizKauai,

That’s great regarding the Miller’s and their book. When I met David at the Marriott during the Sugar Bowl, I asked him if there was a chance his book could turn into a movie. He said yes there was definitely interest in it. Shortly thereafter, June resigned and took off for SMU. I thought that probably killed the story and movie possibilities. But, I guess not. Great to hear there’s still a decent chance. Okay ladies, you must respond.

  83. al March 26, 2010 2:07 pm

in the japanese camps of old.

there was no top-knot hairstyles and it was too hot to sport long hair. so the obasan would take the ricebowl that suited your head and use it as a cutting guide.

later, prince valiant would copy that hair style in england.

  84. Committed Road Warrior March 26, 2010 2:11 pm

Wow, regarding the St. Mary’s-Baylor game.

23% from the field and 1-4 FTs isn’t gonna get you far…..doesn’t help that your opponent is 50% shooting and draining three’s left and right either.

  85. al March 26, 2010 2:11 pm

i’ll guess that on the gibber’s next trip back home (hawaii that is) he will have set up a few official visits. half jc players(csi?) and half hs players.

i think that we will be lucky to land one international player this year. but, after that, watch out.

akana was also responsible for bringing a lot of the talent to byuh. can you imagine what he could do for manoa?

  86. Curt March 26, 2010 2:24 pm

    al,

Was it Akana that brought in BYUH’s top guns? I think their names were Jet Chang from Taiwan and Lucas Alves from Brazil.

I hope we can develop the Australian and Asian pipelines. Go Go Gib.

  87. el guapo March 26, 2010 2:25 pm

In relation to him remaining on the team, does it help or does it not matter that Hiram Thompson is a member of the Mormon church?

UH should get extra credit on the APR if Ji graduates in 3 years and a summer. And Ji should get an award for pulling that off at UH.

  88. el guapo March 26, 2010 2:30 pm

    Hiram’s grandparents live here too

  89. Ralph March 26, 2010 2:31 pm

can Akana out of BYU Laie recruit D1 quality players? Isn’t BYU Laie DII, lots of difference in talent (but don’t compare to UH) when it comes to playing at a high level in D1 and that’s where we need to go. UH has been at the bottom tier way too long, we need players to elevate the level of play-small steps, St. Mary;s, Gonzaga, Xavier, Butler are some of the non BCS schools that we should be competitive with in a few years.

  90. al March 26, 2010 2:32 pm

didn’t gibber mention that he was headed to phoenix?

Actually the way recruiters put it is this way.

If you are a DII recruiter, you go to the same hot spots and talk to the same JC and high school coaches, but instead of recruiting the top 2 or 3 players, you are looking at 3, 4, and 5 players. So DII recruiters can have the same contacts and schools to visit as the DI recruiter but do their job with a smaller budget, and offering fewer scholarships– often offering only partials.

So one D1 coach hiring a DII coach put it this way– if a guy can recruit as a DII coach, he can certainly recruit at the D1 level.

  103. wafan March 26, 2010 4:30 pm

Not a big deal, but my informant was incorrect – per your download yesterday, there were 423 graduates in the 2009 class of which 141 are attending UH – 30%.

    That is all. 😎

  109. Jason March 26, 2010 5:31 pm

Actually, tommui, those 141 students are over the past four years, not just the 2008-2009 school year. I did the counting yesterday, and roughly 9% of the students counted on that list went to UH. But I just noticed that the list doesn’t include the colleges where Punahou sent only one student. Not sure how many of those schools there are, so all I can say is 9% is an upper bound on the number you’ve been talking about.

  110. wafan March 26, 2010 5:32 pm

  115. expat March 26, 2010 6:08 pm

    Jason,

A little more than 400 graduates per year from Punahou. I think that it averages a bit more than 10% of kids go to school in Hawaii — not just UH but all schools — but more kids transfer back than transfer out so the initial count is probably a bit low.

  116. Bigislandkurt March 26, 2010 6:10 pm

It’s truly amazing that Brandyn Akana is being considered as one of the Assistant Coaches. I remember watching him play for BYUH. That bradduh was amazing….No more than 5’11 tops and he played like he was 6’5! After the game against UH-Hilo, I had to go up to him and shake his hand. I called him “Molokai.” I said, “Molokai!” Brandyn looked over at me. “bradduh, YOU BAD!” That bradduh played with a lot of heart and confidence. Hearing that he is being considered for UH warms my heart.

The LDS Factor? Trust me, it is all good. The LDS church has WORLDWIDE connections. From AFrica to Asia, Europe to America…Trust me, we gonna be alright.

    Found this on Akana:

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, tomorrow morning in Costa Mesa over 200 accepted Southern California Freshmen will be having an invited gathering from UH admissions office on their acceptance of becoming students at the University Of Hawaii.

I and other Hawaii Southern California Alums will be “READY” to seal the deal and let every “wealthy” parent(s) know that your love one will be getting a quality education, being safe in the ohana and will embrace the culture and come back as a full wahine or kane !

UH admissions do a classy reception as Belinda Nagashima is professional and enjoy our volunteer support while aiding and helping these young and excited faces questions on coming to the ‘OHANA’

Of course with my keen eye looking for athletic talent among the large group I might luck out BUT in reality no athletes among the selected group but 3.5 to 4.0 honor students, parents credit card and can’t wait to hit the beach as picnic and body surfing from all that studying is the cure for some relax and recreation.

Good night as I get my “ALOHA” some sleep and ready early morning so they can see me now “my hawaiian eyes” !

One of the major TV networks is doing a story line on “March Madness” and how 12 teams, including Kentucky, would NOT have been selected is the NCAA used “stricter” rules on eligibility such a graduation rates.

It was pointed out that Kentucky had a grad rate of 20%. Many prominent schools were in the 12 teams named.

If this is true, wonder how they can continue to recruit players with the APR effect on available scholarships with such low, low grad rates?

The sports analyst used 50% grad rate as the minimum cut off rate/%.

Isn’t UH far above the 50% line?

USC is offering travel packages for their fans to attend the UH game. This should be a nice boost to Hawaii’s economy, especially since they will be staying for 4 nights instead of just flying in for the game.

They are calling it “Touchdown in Hawaii.” The USC Alumni Assn. is coordinating with Pleasant Holidays offering island travel packages for the Sept. 2 USC-University of Hawaii football game in Aloha Stadium. Travel packages with air for a four-night vacation in paradise start at $1,049 per person. Everything is planned including pep rallies, tailgate parties and more.

Was a great game last night Na Wahine over Spartans, was a nail biter all the way to the bottom of the tenth. Had a good size crowd that got pretty vocal toward’s the end. DBL header today, hope they get a good crowd again today, makes for a good time. Their having a special on the tickets – FREE!!! LOL

Both Brandyn and Walter are good people with solid basketball backgrounds. They are young, energetic, and charismatic. If they are hired, it will be exciting to see what they can do together at Hawaii.

  222. Koh Samui Travel Guide & Info April 8, 2010 5:52 am

I was in Samui for the last 2 weeks of February 2008 and had a exceptional time – I always do! The grooviest part of the year is ‘tween late May until November (the monsoon season). When I was there, it rained a hardly a couple of times, but then promptly dried up after. Many people visit in the high season (November to March) because of nice temperatures, blue skies and low rainfall. As a result tourism is at its highest and everything can be a little more pricey. Hotels and tours can be quite packed and some tourist hot spots are not quite so laid back.
