Donovan, Sheriff placed on leave

Worse came to worst on the Manoa campus with athletic director Jim Donovan and Sheriff Center manager Rich Sheriff being placed on paid leave indefinitely while an investigation is launched into debacle of the cancelled Stevie Wonder concert.

Manoa chancellor Tom Apple, who imposed the leaves, will hire investigators to look into the matter. Apple said the main goal is to recover the $200,000 that was paid to Epic-Talent, a third-party promoter.

Rockne Freitas has named the acting athletic director.

Just noticed the NFL Players Association opened up an online merchandise store featuring 1,800 players. Yep, all of the former UH guys have apparel. Here’s the link: NFLPA store.

    Wow 1st batter up!

  3. lurker Ron July 11, 2012 6:37 am

“execution bad, idea good!” Well said Mr.Tsai!

  4. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 6:41 am

I hated Ferd’s column today. It was nasty, hasty, and (to put it mildly) unfriendly. Why does HE still have a job? Time to hire a new columnist.

  5. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 6:43 am

The Honolulu Marathon got suckered by a concert promoter.

    Rain fans were duped, too.

There are a lot of scams, and let’s hope karma strikes at those who steal.

But, sheesh, UH has one great idea and … Poof?!?

Time to get the Lower Campus blessed.

  6. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 6:43 am

Maybe the only promoter any organization should trust is Uncle Tom Moffatt, who has lived and worked in Hawaii for decades. He has an excellent reputation.

  7. Abunai July 11, 2012 6:46 am

    Ol wright. Top ten again.

  8. Abunai July 11, 2012 6:47 am

Morning all. ST good point. I agree

  9. tommui July 11, 2012 6:51 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Interesting situation re: Stevie Wonder.

  10. Stretch July 11, 2012 6:56 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

I agree that it was a great idea to raise funds for the Athletic Department. It’s unfortunate that it will not happen.

gigi – it might not be an article you like but it’s reality

  11. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 7:00 am

The worst thing is: There’s no Stevie Wonder concert.

He’s a big act, and there are so few big acts that perform in Hawaii.

omerta n. A rule or code that prohibits speaking or divulging information about certain activities, especially the activities of a criminal organization.

  13. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 7:15 am

    Gigi:

It’s the mafia term for don’t rat out anybody.

I’m sure there were many people involved in the discussions, including JD the AD, but in the end, there’s only one person who’s going to take the fall.

  14. Kekoa July 11, 2012 7:15 am

Our PR guru (Powder Puff) should be able to contact the front men for Mr. Wonder. Explaining to them how important his performance would be, and how he could attain lifetime membership with the Tsaiko’s is key.

  15. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 7:17 am

Wasn’t the UH chancellor involved? If so, why doesn’t he take the fall?

  16. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 7:17 am

Another saving grace is the publicity was so horrible that many did not know about the concert.

I know UH has money woes, but advertising through tweets seemed really needy.

  17. PolyMom July 11, 2012 7:17 am

Really how hard is it to book a concert? Booking acts does not take a rocket scientist. Now does UH lose money? With the SSC…the venue is far superior then NBC. NBC books many shows on their own now. All of the stage productions NBC books. Not all shows are Tom Moffatt Productions.

  18. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 7:19 am

    Gigi:

I have no idea who knew or didn’t know.

All I know is nobody fessed up when the Titanic hit the iceberg.

  19. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 7:21 am

    PolyMom:

    You’re exactly right.

UH should have done it on its own.

I mean, UH had to do the promoting and ticket sales. It should have cut out the middle man, and called Wonder’s people. Would have saved $200,000.

  20. Shoko July 11, 2012 7:23 am

As they say, chit rolls down hill. Unfortunately, the guy on the bottom usually ends up being the fall guy.

  21. mo808 July 11, 2012 7:23 am

I hope JD is not shown the gallows for this.

  22. RedZone July 11, 2012 7:24 am

ST I had Hmail about the concert. Good way to tick off the season ticket holders. I am more worried about only 6 home games. With exception of Boise I don’t see UH drawing many fans to the games. It seems to be a lose money year.

  23. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 7:28 am

Unfortunately, nobody is immune to being fired. We all know of people who were fired despite having worked for their organization for 30 years…

What’s JD going to do if his contract is renewed? He’s a talented guy, but will there be a job for him in this economy? Good luck to him!

  24. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 7:29 am

    is NOT renewed

  25. jimmy the lock July 11, 2012 7:29 am

    Lower Campus blessed?

Did someone move lava rocks around?

  26. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 7:30 am

    RedZone:

    Thanks for the clarification.

I don’t read HMail because it seems cluttered with promos. It’s like looking at a race car.

  27. Shoko July 11, 2012 7:31 am

I think the Nevada game might draw fans the Aloha Stadium. As well as the Homecoming game against NM. Maybe UNLV will draw a crowd being military appreciation night.

  28. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 7:31 am

    Jimmy:

    Well, there was that fire.

Then again, the workers from that records office moved to the Letter Winner’s Club House, which is a wooden portable complex.

  29. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 7:32 am

    You guys are right.

They need a seventh home game.

And not just from a competitive standpoint. I mean, why not take advantage of another opportunity to have tailgates?

  30. Last Call July 11, 2012 7:36 am

I wasn’t planning on going anyways but it still hurts to see us get scammed.I usually don’t agree with Booby C over at 1420 but I also want to see the FBI called in on this.

  31. jimmy the lock July 11, 2012 7:38 am

    As Stevie would sing, Superstition.

  32. RedZone July 11, 2012 7:41 am

I remember when we had 9 home games. It was long and sometimes painful but I was there. A lot of tailgates. Those 6 home games in a row were killer. I actually enjoyed the away game breaks.

  33. shadow July 11, 2012 7:58 am

Will JD (& others involved) be punished for this? For at least 4 games? Is this “mistake” so egregious to warrant a new AD? Even UH managers make ‘big’ mistakes, not just student athletes. I guess we’ll see how the “new” UH upper leadership will take care of this business.

  34. Da Punchbowl Kid July 11, 2012 8:09 am

    Good Morning Gangeez!

    Blessings are always good.

  35. primo888 July 11, 2012 8:10 am

No way does JD get to spend $200K without other people involved. If one head rolls, ALL heads should roll..

  36. primo888 July 11, 2012 8:11 am

Uncle Ben must be happy “his” story isn’t so big now.

  37. Kevin July 11, 2012 8:11 am

    Reality… What a concept!

  38. primo888 July 11, 2012 8:12 am

ST should interview Uncle Tom and post it.

  39. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2012 8:19 am

One of my stories made it in Tom Moffatt’s book. He’s a good guy.

  40. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 8:21 am

Uncle Tom used to be my favorite DJ on KPOI. In fact, I wrote a letter to him and, lo and behold, he read it on the air. Lol. Couldn’t believe it. Guess what, I signed it TERRY SILVA. Too shame to use real name…

  41. hilousupaman July 11, 2012 8:25 am

Aloha everybody! I am out of Korea finally, I look to be posting again!

FYI there is a group of Hawiians in the miltary going to watch Georgia Force games. The group wears Warrior Green and was actually able to get discounted rates. I myself will not be going not for the next few games at least.

Pretty bummed about the Stevie Wonder deal… but at least no football players were arrested yesterday!

  42. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 8:29 am

ST: cool shirts! Do the players get money from the sales?

  43. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 8:29 am

What a shame. I know a few people who were really looking forward to watching Wonder. They aren’t UH sports fans per se, but big time SW fans.

Won’t be surprised if this is JD’s last year as AD. Oh captain my captain.

  44. Stretch July 11, 2012 8:33 am

    Hopefully WarriorMojo is okay….

  45. A-House July 11, 2012 8:37 am

    Gigi:

we don’t need a Ohio State problem with players getting $$$ from sale of items!

  46. (Jesse) James July 11, 2012 8:38 am

Good morning Tsaikos….Hope all have a great day!!!

Sorry to see that the SW concert was a scam. Not sure what to make of it.

The idea was good though and it’s that sort of out-of-the-box thinking we need when trying to raise funds for our athletic programs.

I know with Stretch and PP on the Board for Na Koa….at least that sort of thing will start to happen from that end.

  47. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 8:41 am

I was listening to Curran this morning and he said that the local promoter Peyton forwarded the money to some company in Spain. Is that true?

Ferd didn’t mention anything about that in his column.

  48. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 8:45 am

A-House: this store belongs to the NFL and these are pro athletes. What has Ohio State got to do with it? Lol.

  49. Roman Blind Kits July 11, 2012 8:45 am

You already know therefore significantly with regards to this matter, produced me in my view imagine it from numerous various angles. Its like men and women are not interested except it is something to do with Lady gaga! Your individual stuffs outstanding. All the time care for it up!

  50. al July 11, 2012 8:46 am

i guess we should have waited until the contract was “signed, sealed, delivered”.

  51. Bigislandkurt July 11, 2012 8:48 am

So who was that concert promoter you ask?

Bob and Marie Peyton perhaps? they promoted many concerts on the Big Island in the past and lets just say…..their name is not so good with too many people. Hawaii is a small place. Sad to see that UH folks did not have the wherewithal to talk story and put their ears to the streets about these shysters, I mean concert promoters.

Yes, Uncle Tom is the creme de la creme when it comes to promoting concerts. First class for concert goers and performers alike.

U2, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and others may not resonate as well with this Tsaiko collection of folks, but they all have the same ability to pack the SSC and command prices like Stevie.

    BIK

  52. NYUH July 11, 2012 8:49 am

Saw Stevie Wonder in the NBC in the late 1980s. Great show. Hope he calls to say I love you Hawaii.

  53. al July 11, 2012 8:49 am

its been that long…but 23 years ago our committee managed to procure headliners sans promoter in what has now become an annual event at mcbh, kaneohe bay, hawaii.

    could be done.

  54. Shoko July 11, 2012 8:51 am

If getting the money back involves taking legal action, UH will be looking at additional legal fees to get this settled. I don’t think we have seen the end of this. The plot could thicken making a much juicier story.

Or it could be settled quickly and everyone can move forward. 😉

  55. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 8:53 am

See if Bruno Mars is willing to do a concert.

  56. hilousupaman July 11, 2012 9:00 am

    Bruno Mars would be cool!

  57. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 9:00 am

    BIK #51,

Lady Gaga, Taylor Perry, Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, BEP etc. would sell out before they even go on sale haha. Getting them to actually come to Hawaii for a benefit concert for UH sports might be a tough sell though.

  58. hilousupaman July 11, 2012 9:00 am

Or whats her name from Pussy Cat Dolls

  59. Shoko July 11, 2012 9:03 am

Or get Jamie Foxx. He did a pretty good job with his impression of Stevie. Plus, he’s a great singer. He can sing that “Blame it (on the alcohol)” song, which would be fitting considering the string of D….oh, nevermind.

  60. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 9:07 am

Or get Koakane to do his Carnak The Magnificent impersonation for an hour. “Green bottles, shoe goo, an angry mongoose.”

  61. hilousupaman July 11, 2012 9:23 am

I say get local bands to do it, it will not make nearly as much money but what better way to make money… as IZ said Support ALL things local!

  62. PolyMom July 11, 2012 9:25 am

@Stephen Tsai…I would be happy to do that job for UH for free for two shows. But see UH does not let anyone work for free. Pay me a buck. The first show they should be booking…is Jack Johnson. Local…and his Kokua Concerts draw folks from all over the world. So many great performers would love to perform there on their way to or from Asia or the Australia portion of their tours.

Bruno Mars another local boy. Geez folks how hard is it? Especially since they are American acts and you don’t have to get all the Visas. Heck many years ago Christina Aguillera had a fab show at SSC.

  63. PowderPuff July 11, 2012 9:25 am

re #14 – Kekoa, if it were only so simple. 🙂 PR, in some ways, is a lot like golf – it’s how you recover from your mistakes. And of course, how grave are your mistakes. But agree with (J)J, it WAS a good idea…heck, a lot of us bought tickets. But now it’s time to turn it around, focus ahead, and see how the UHAD can recover the funds.

  64. papajoe2 July 11, 2012 9:28 am

If it was a scam, shouldn’t the promoters be arrested for scamming 6,000 people and the UH?

  65. koakane July 11, 2012 9:29 am

    morning now time to say

or get iwonderwhytheyhateme do this campaign election pony show

  66. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 9:29 am

    Was the scam from Spain?

  67. A-joe July 11, 2012 9:35 am

Impressive as it may be, do we really need a bigtime act to come into town, take 3/4 of the proceeds to generate revenue?

No can just get local talent?

    Call ‘um Da Manoa Bash.

  68. PolyMom July 11, 2012 9:36 am

Kevin…yah regarding a reality show…my hub was in talks with the NCAA for three months. Rules are so sketchy. Heck he even went to Indianapolis for a face to face meeting. But the rules are so grey about UH getting the money. To bad…so many in America would love a glimpse of the UH lifestyle based on their commercial. The commercial won a Telley Award I think.

  69. papajoe2 July 11, 2012 9:38 am

I too, went to Stevie Wonder’s last concert here and really enjoyed it. Told a friend about him coming here and she said it was the best concert she ever went to. Too bad. I hope I get my money back but I’m not too worried about that. I hope UH didn’t lose more than the 200K that they said they paid to Peyton. I also was wondering if our ticket “fee” will be refunded too. BTW, who paid for the advertisement in the newpapers and how much did that cost? Was it part of the 200K? Did UH hire extra employees to handle the ticket sales and what about the wages of the employees that UH had doing the sales and now the refunding costs?

  70. kev-1 July 11, 2012 9:38 am

Looking at the names on the sweatshirts above . . . I thought Ingram was released?

  73. papajoe2 July 11, 2012 9:47 am

68~PolyMom, on yesterday’s blog, d1 posted an article about the experiences of the strength coach that was here in the 1970s. It was a very disturbing article to me about how the athletes would just party and how he used psychology to get them to work out with a hangover and limit their partying on the nights before workouts. I’m sure or at least hope that it has changed somewhat over the years for UH. If not, I sure wouldn’t want the lifestyle of our athletes on nationwide tv.

  74. kev-1 July 11, 2012 9:48 am

scratch that about Ingram. . . he was waived by the Jags last year, but signed as a FA with the Titans. My bad.

  75. papajoe2 July 11, 2012 9:51 am

kev-1, I thought he was also released by the Titans after only about a week there. I’m not sure though. Didn’t Estes also get released?

  76. SteveM July 11, 2012 9:51 am

    Good morning everyone!

hilosupaman — if you are PCS out of Korea and not stationed in Hawaii, what city/state should I list you under?

  77. Kevin July 11, 2012 9:52 am

NCAA student-athletes should not be involved with so-called reality shows.

The idea of putting complete opposites under one roof provides entertainment due to “manufactured” circumstances and we can all blame MTV for the “real world”.

While the concept of placing a camera crew in a dorm or other natural settings seems harmless, the fact is when people are on camera, they act differently and I don’t mean being interviewed, but in a tv show setting, people will embellish things, especially their personality. This is fact. This is human nature.

I’ve never been a fan of so-called reality shows because they are far from reality.

The evening news is more of a reality show than anything.

Then again, following student-athletes around campus, especially upper campus might shed some more light on dilapidated facilities. It could also show glaring red flags of TITLE IX compliance failures should they dare to show the women’s locker room area (and people thought the football locker room was bad…).

  78. Wes'side Warrior July 11, 2012 9:57 am

Aloha, hilousupaman! Should be a good game between da Force and da Powah dis weekend! Hoping to get a big Warrior Green crowd.

We going be tailgating a couple of hours before da game too. Hope it won’t be raining at that time. I’ll probably set up a tent if it’s clear or just light rain. We’ll see. For da last game, we just all stood around in da heatwave to talk story, den went in early to enjoy da a/c.

So, for those that show up on 14July2012…

    Arena at Gwinnett Center

Game starts at 7pm; doors open at 6pm.

Tailgate (pupus) in da “peanut” parking lot starting at 4pm or so.

Most of us are sitting in Section 115, since da tickets are discounted at $10 each! Working with the Senior Director of Team Operations of the Georgia Force, Andy Haskell, I’ve been able to arrange for a Warrior Green section for both sideline and endzone seating/rates. Their Fan Appreciation promo has pushed the sideline tickets price down to $20 each. Our Warrior Green Sideline section is 116. Make sure you mention it to Mr. Haskell to get the right seats. (Or, you can wave at us from across da Arena… up to you!)

We will be singing “Kanaka Waiwai” aftah da game pau.

Where did he find time to yammer on about Tiger Woods or the NY Giants?

  81. jimmy the lock July 11, 2012 10:03 am

  82. Wes'side Warrior July 11, 2012 10:03 am

Too bad about the Stevie Wonder concert a no-go. Something’s crooked with that deal.

Best concert I ever went to in my life… Al Jarreau! Buggah get so much energy, was unrealz! Felt like he was performing da concert just for me! His interaction with da crowd really made da difference!

    hilousupaman:

was at Hurlburt Field for the Air Ground School back in 1979 – 3 weeks of work and study – found time to walk the “piers” and saw so many “aku” come up only to see the fisherman through them back into the ocean.

finally asked one if I could have a fish and he looked at me like “why da heck you like rubbish fish” – no worries, me and friend had fresh aku sashimi for 2 days and fried aku on other days – yummies!!!!!!

then, we went to New Orleans just as Hurricane Gilbert left – what a mess – 2 days of R&R before heading home.

Will this be “home” for 3 years?

  88. hilousupaman July 11, 2012 10:20 am

Never heard of or saw Aku here… man that would make my day! New mission for this weekend.

  89. Wes'side Warrior July 11, 2012 10:20 am

Mahalo, Al! Bruddah Kekoa mentioned the same. Just living aloha… spreading da aloha spirit.

Like I said to da “Hawaiians in the Military” group,

We all know what it’s like to be doing our job away from home. Away from loved ones. Away from our support base. During those assignments, we craved da local flavah, wherever we could find it.

We don’t have a huge representation of localz in professional sports around the nation. So, when we find some nearby, the least we can do is try to show support. All about da ‘ohana.

Just wish we could do more. The group is in it’s infancy. We’ll grow, even if/when I move back home. There’s a pretty good core of Georgians already on board. It’ll grow.

You guys would be amazed at how many folks come up to us to talk about Hawaii, Bryant Moniz, and Coach Chow… and to take pics! Pretty cool!

Hey, A-joe, I gotta admit that photo of you posted 2 days ago was simply beautiful. Compliments to the photographer. How old were you when it was taken?

Some men take great photos. Take Leonard Peters, for example. Barry Markowitz took his photos and posted them here a couple of years ago. Barry is a real professional. Peters looked better in those pictures than he does in real life.

    Gigi:

I have no idea who knew or didn’t know.

All I know is nobody fessed up when the Titanic hit the iceberg.

Good analogy, ST. The Captain is responsible, of course, even if he was steering the course as specified by the head office.

But if anybody thinks this incident is JD’s “Titanic”, consider this… I saw a documentary of an assembled group of engineers and experts concluded that the Titanic would not have sunk if one last crucial compartment did not eventually flood. There was time. They were asked how would they prevent this from happening, especially since technologies like huge inflatable air bladders were not available at the time.

The Coastie architect suggested filling the compartment with all the floatation available–the passenger and crew life jackets. 2,000-3,000 cork lifejackets. They agreed that that would be enough mass and buoyancy to prevent flooding that last compartment. But what an out-of-the-box solution!

Well, if this is his Titanic, JD’s got my life jacket if he wants.

    …and we need a fund-raising rescue ship.

  113. SteveM July 11, 2012 11:10 am

Well, JD’s fault or not, it was a big-time attempt to raise money for the Athletic Department. Hope this does not become a case of “once burned, twice shy”.

Can we use the SSC as a concert/fund raising venue now? If we can, a few “smaller-time” attempts to raise $150,000 at a time could work too. Also, if concerts and sound systems are possible at Aloha Stadium– why not Les Murakami Stadium? Al could do his version of Woodstock there. 🙂

@Kevin…not all reality shows are staged. I work on one of the highest rated reality shows and I promise you there are no set ups. None. If a crew is there before the scene is shot then they are able to get a shot from the inside…like at the front door. Reality shows use several crews. Not just a two camera crew. Sometimes there are as many as ten cameras.

It would have been great exposure for UH. Have you not seen USC’s reality show? I liked it. It is a web series. Very interesting to learn about young people and all the challenges they face today. Young people in college face so many harder moral, ethical and financial problems then we ever faced. Especially alcohol and drugs.

  121. PolyMom July 11, 2012 11:29 am

Thank you for stepping up to get Bruno Mars to do a benefit concert on behalf of UH Athletics! I would be happy to use my Stevie Wonder money and buy tickets to see this son of Hawaii.

How fast do you think it will take for you to put this together?

  129. Capitolist/WassupDoc July 11, 2012 12:12 pm

In another lifetime, I coordinated a music fundraiser which brought in over $200K – which would now be around $500K – and only brought local groups to the stage. We kept the tickets relatively low – probably about $70 today – and had lots of local businesses and food vendors selling stuff for a flat fee plus donations for giveaways.

Spealing of money: The Aloha Stadium Facilites Special Fund is now law – ACT 282 – 2012. Mahalo to Senator Glenn Wakai and Representative Denny Coffman for making this happen.

  130. Wes'side Warrior July 11, 2012 12:23 pm

Scratching my head on the “Matt Barkley is competing in the Manning camp this week.”

Is there another camp, other than the one I’m reading about? “Manning Passing Academy”?

    ELIGIBILITY

IN ACCORDANCE WITH NCAA RULES ON PROSPECTIVE STUDENT ATHLETES, ALL BOYS MUST BE BETWEEN THE GRADES 8-12. THAT IS, A PROSPECTIVE CAMPER MUST BE ENTERING THE 8TH, 9TH, 10TH, 11TH, OR 12TH GRADE THE FALL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE MPA SESSION. HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES ARE PROHIBITED TO ATTEND THE MPA (PER NCAA RULES). CAMPERS WILL BE MATCHED AGAINST OTHER PLAYERS OF THE SAME GRADE.

NOTE: SOME CAMPERS WOULD PREFER TO PLAY AT A HIGHER GRADE-LEVEL THAN THE ONE THEY ARE IN. THE MPA CANNOT ASSESS THE SKILL LEVEL OF A PLAYER RELATIVE TO CAMPERS OF A DIFFERENT GRADE-LEVEL DURING THE PERIOD THAT CAMP IS IN SESSION. THEREFORE, A CAMPER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO MOVE UP. HOWEVER, IF A CAMPER FEELS THAT THEY SHOULD BE IN A LOWER LEVEL, DUE TO ABILITY, OR BECAUSE YOUNGER TEAMMATES ARE IN ATTENDANCE, WE WILL ALLOW IT.

    And according to: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/blog/rob-rang/19196078/matt-barkley-among-qbs-invited-to-elite-manning-camp

The college quarterbacks will serve as intructors for youth athletes who attend the camp, while also being tutored themselves by Peyton Manning and Eli Manning.

Sounds like a big time NCAA infraction somewhere in all this, as there has to be a dollar value placed on receiving instruction, personally, by two NFL QB’s. I mean, we can’t even feed student-athletes or give them a free ride to town without raising a red flag with the NCAA. How can this be allowed?

  135. jimmy the lock July 11, 2012 12:45 pm

    7/13/2011 9:15:15 PM

“Veteran athletics administrator Herman Frazier joins Syracuse University Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross’ staff as a deputy athletics director/chief of staff. In his role, Frazier will oversee the daily operation of all facets of Syracuse Athletics.

“During the past years, we have grown the athletics department through defined phases that have led to some of our best success ever. We now plan to improve our success and brand by adding excellent leadership,” Gross said. “Phase I was to initiate building of facilities to compete nationally. Phase II involved putting the best head coaching staff in the country together. The next phase includes creating the most dynamic administrative staff in college sports. Recently, we welcomed Floyd Little to the staff as special assistant to the athletics director. I am pleased to announce today the hiring of Herman Frazier, who will be a deputy athletics director and chief of staff.

“Herman’s broad experience is unmatched. As a successful two-time athletics director and long-time administrator in college athletics and with the United States Olympic Committee, Herman brings sophistication and proven results to the program. His knowledge, work ethic, and attention to detail will enhance the mission and vision of the department to become, consistently, one of the nation’s best programs, while maintaining compliance, graduating student-athletes, and creating new resources to give us the opportunity to be the best. Herman is well-established and highly-respected in NCAA Division 1 college sports and is considered one of the top athletics administrators in the country. I am ecstatic that he is joining our team.”

Frazier brings 34 years of experience in athletics administration, including eight years of experience as an athletics director, to Syracuse. Most recently, he has served as the senior associate athletics director for sports administration at Temple University. Prior to joining the Owls’ staff, the Philadelphia native served six years as the director of athletics at Hawai’i.”

Never said Locked Up Abroad is a “reality show”, by today’s mainstream definition. I just said I liked it.

However it is based on reality regardless of the unfortunate situations they place themselves in.

The chances of someone getting coerced into smuggling drugs for the money in today’s economy is more likely than someone coming to flip my house or myself entering a nationally televised karaoke contest.

    So yeah… reality… 😎

    What would you do ?

    This actually happened to me.

You go into the gas station and hand the girl $30.00 and say 30 on pump 3 please.

You go back out and pump your gas but the meter goes right past $30.00 and doesn’t stop until it reaches $40.00.

Do you say thank you very much suckers or do you go back in and explain to the cashier that she made a mistake and you want to pay her for the extra gas ?

  185. Old School Dave July 11, 2012 3:40 pm

JD placed on leave of absence while investigation is done. UH VP Rockne Freitas will be the interim AD. Freitas was the Assistant AD under Stan Sheriff back in the 80s.

  186. Kevin July 11, 2012 3:40 pm

    Oh ****.

    That didnt take long.

  187. Kevin July 11, 2012 3:41 pm

“UH VP Rockne Freitas will be the interim AD.”

    One step away…

  188. Last Call July 11, 2012 3:42 pm

This is what I expected UH to do. It wouldn’t look good if they did nothing.

  189. Old School Dave July 11, 2012 3:43 pm

Best of luck to Jim Donovan. The anti-athletics and anti-UH elements are coming out of the woodwork for this one.

  190. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 3:44 pm

Why is Rich Sheriff being put on LOA? Isn’t he just the manager for the arena?

  191. Last Call July 11, 2012 3:44 pm

Rich is a great person who has done a great job managing that facility I just don’t see how he could even be held responsible for anything.

  192. Old School Dave July 11, 2012 3:45 pm

I think that becoming UH AD from UH system VP would be a comedown for Rockne Freitas. Been there, done that. But who knows?

  193. al July 11, 2012 3:46 pm

186…i’d go back in. otherwise the cashier/clerk will be $10 short at the end of the day when they reconcile the cash/credits and the readings.

i wouldn’t the person to lose their job because i didn’t man up.

  194. al July 11, 2012 3:49 pm

i would suspect that more players will become involved in the wonder debacle.

it would interesting to know who initiated this benefit concert…?

  195. Old School Dave July 11, 2012 3:50 pm

I often recall seeing Rich Sheriff outside pulling weeds with his staff and maintaining the grounds around the SSC. The guy takes pride in his work and the place named after his dad.

  196. BigHiloFan2 July 11, 2012 3:50 pm

    Good luck JD.

    and….

    Go Warriors!

  197. Kevin July 11, 2012 3:52 pm

Rich Sheriff takes tremendous pride in the facility that bears his father’s name. It was evident to me in the last few “Manoa Makeover” days up there and seeing him around on gamedays making sure things go as smoothly as possible in the house his father built.

Perhaps he had something to do with the whole process?? Who knows.

Cliché as it is, “time will tell”.

  198. HiFlyer July 11, 2012 3:54 pm

Its like you learn my thoughts! You seem to grasp a lot approximately this, like you wrote the guide in it or something. I feel that you just could do with a few p.c. to force the message home a bit, however other than that, this is wonderful blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.

Good afternoon . . . for most of us!

  201. wafan July 11, 2012 4:03 pm

Something about the whole concert issue stinks.

Seems a lot more folks are involved who either misled or were suckered.

  202. wafan July 11, 2012 4:04 pm

  211. PowderPuff July 11, 2012 4:41 pm

Shoot, they filmed at SSC last year for the “murdered VB coach” episode. They worked very closely with JD and Tracy. But, you’re right….they’ll probably be back there very soon. Many Season 2 locations (incl. UH) received e-mails from them regarding Season 3.

  212. Slugger July 11, 2012 4:43 pm

  217. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 4:47 pm

Rockne is speaking at the press conference right now. He stressed his 4-point plan as the acting-AD.

So far I take it he is more of a deal maker/ bone breaker type and not so much the public speaker type.

  218. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 4:48 pm

So disappointed…SW was the best concert I have seen in Hawaii and I have seen many…sad for the program and sad for the fans. Always get the deal signed and sealed before you promote it…anyone with any media experience knows, please stop making us look like we are clueless!!!

  229. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 5:15 pm

According to ST on 1420 right now, Rich Sheriff may be in the mix because he may have been one of the guys initially contacted for this concert.

    #235,

    That sucks.

  237. PolyMom July 11, 2012 5:35 pm

Feel sorry for Jim Donovan. He does not work in the entertainment business. When ypu sign a contract with a legit promoter…there is an insurance policy signed at the same time for fraud, non performance, act of God, and several other matters. Let’s say this…this is the biggest concert fiasco since Greg Mundy ripped off everyone on the Henry Kapono World Tour. And that was 20 plus years ago. Sorry this money was authorized by a higher power at UH. Does JD have that kind of access to wire 200K? I really doubt it. Let’s not throw JD under the bus. I do not blame him. The money was wired by who? Find out the facts before they throw innocent people under the bus.

BTW they found Greg Mundy’s body floating in some lake on the mainland a year or so later. The late Ken Rosene was also a great promoter in Hawaii. At least he paid his bills.

  238. Kevin July 11, 2012 5:36 pm

Here’s hoping for the best for UH Athletics.

There is an entire “ecosystem” that is UH athletics. From coaches to student-athletes to all the various employees in between that have done nothing wrong and are left wondering….

Then there are the fans/boosters that have personal/financial/emotional interests at stake.

The needs and concerns of the many outweigh the needs and concerns of the few.

(Getting sick and tired of “hoping” things turn out for the better).

The climate needs to change and enough of this madness in general needs to stop.

  239. al July 11, 2012 5:37 pm

abunai…it is the reason why we acquired grimes.

    that was the subliminal message…no?

  240. al July 11, 2012 5:38 pm

  241. al July 11, 2012 5:39 pm

  242. Nice read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing some research on that. And he just bought me lunch since I found it for him smile Thus let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!

  243. al July 11, 2012 5:40 pm

224…perhaps the smiley with the whistling would have been more apropo?

  244. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 5:40 pm

According to Keoki Kerr (via 1420), Carl Clapp and Howard Totto (sp) were involved with both the signing of the contract and wiring of funds.

  245. Don Weir (We-Ah) July 11, 2012 5:40 pm

    196 Al

    200 Hi Flyer

I had advocated a concert fundraiser since 2005 when I joined UH Letterwinners as a BOD. It was always the ‘just too many hurdles’ answer that I received. Later as Ex Dir of Na Koa it was too many signatures needed, conflicts with NBC, unavailable dates, and a laundry list of why it couldn’t be done. Makaha Sons wanted to do their “Walk in the Country’ concert at the SSC for several years but there was no support. We had the inside track on this money maker.

Now a 3rd party gets involved and the concert idea turns south on UH. I doubt Rich Sheriff and/or Jim Donovan were the lead on this fiasco.

Questions that will be asked ‘if’ an internal review ever surfaces:

    1. Who contacted the third party?

    2. Who was the UH lead and/or the UH lead organization on this project?

    3. Who negotiated the contract with the 3rd party?

Many of the answers will be found if we ‘follow the money’ both to and from UH.

  246. d1shima July 11, 2012 5:41 pm

Bad timing. Wouldn’t a new Chancellor look at this as an opportunity to bring in one of “his people”?

  247. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 5:44 pm

    d1,

i wonder if they are thinking of “cleaning house”.

  248. Ben A. Lurker July 11, 2012 5:51 pm

JD has been an awesome get-it-done AD from my lurker point of view and

is light years of ahead of the previous guy. I am certain for example we will see a

fairly quick downward spiral at Syracuse over the next few years in every faccet

of their athletics program. Too bad someone had to fall on the sword for this.

  249. Kevin July 11, 2012 5:52 pm

Someone tried to start rumors here about “cleaning house” months ago?

While no one suggested it would go down this way….

A lot of plausible deniability on the part of the conspirators now, if that is the case.

    Just saying…

  250. PolyMom July 11, 2012 5:56 pm

Al it hit the LA Times by noon today. Was on ESPN also. This now becomes a FBI matter since funds were wired. My hub just said there could be money laundering charges as well.

I want to see Bob Peyton show bank transaction for his 50K. Until he shows it…he should be arrested. He was also the guy if I am not mistaken that was bringing Neil Diamond. And was that show cancelled as well?

  251. d1shima July 11, 2012 6:02 pm

Investigations. You know dey serious when you hear the two questions:

    What did you know?

    When did you know it?

  252. obachan July 11, 2012 6:09 pm

I suggest the that the overly-paid, high-salaried, high maka-maka, upper campus administrators all chip in to make up for the 200K down payment in the event that the money is not retrieved. They can surely afford it! My 2 kids have been attending UH Manoa for the past few years and the tuition is always going up. Das why I no mo money.

  253. tommui July 11, 2012 6:18 pm

I was sadden to see that JD was placed on indefinite leave.

As some of you may know, JD was instrumental in getting about 3M from my clients being donated through the UHF for the benefit of Na Koa and the Wahine softball, basketball and Volleyball teams.

    Auwe!

  254. greenthumb July 11, 2012 6:29 pm

Something is funky when you crunch the numbers of UH’s investment vs. possible return on the Wonder concert, even if it had taken place and was anything close to a sellout. The small potential for return makes me wonder which beancounter(s) signed off on the deal. Hope the investigation is thorough and not a scapegoating process!

for me, he is not da guy who we ID and say da buck stops dare. everybody in da money pipeline had their own due diligence code.

they all got bamboozled, seems to me. if wuz me, and i had da kannecks to Rock, I’d ask him to use his pretty please smile and go talk to Stevie. No, not our Stevie, but da real Stevie. always gots to ask.

and if not Steve, got plenty big kine entertainers dat live here, Maui. get basketball. they need samoa schollies. VB too. everybody gotta step up.

  263. INNOCENT OBSERVER July 11, 2012 8:13 pm

JD did some things wrong at UH and the powers were not pleased. this is the final stake. the way he fired the women’s basketball coach was classless. the way he allowed gib to manipulate him into giving gib a substantial raise after only one year. his negotiation with mac about his firing was too generous. in fact, the initial contract was too generous too. hiring wade as men’s volleyball coach was not a great idea. it appears that JD played favorites and this did not sit right with some of the coaches. that is why they powers did not believe in extending his contract earlier and waited his long. now, it appears that it will never be.

  264. Ipu Man July 11, 2012 8:34 pm

UH lawyers signed off on it.

Shouldn’t they be held more responsible than JD?

  265. Ipu Man July 11, 2012 8:38 pm

Well, I hope JD can get some beach and sunshine and RELAX.

Treat it like a paid vacation.

Leave the cell phone at home.

    And the computer…

  266. Ipu Man July 11, 2012 8:40 pm

Meanwhile, KITV mayor’s debate was on KGMB and was interesting.

All the candidates sounded electable. Kirk looked like a mayor.

Ben made sense. And the current Mayor ticked off an impresive array

    of his accomplishments…

And during a break, voila, discovered Leahy and Leahy on Channel 10.

And they had some juicy points, too, on UH athletics…

As Senator Inoue supposedly said, the only way rail will not be funded by the

federal government, is if world war three breaks out…

I suppose the same is true for UH football to be exciting.

    Go Warriors!

  270. Kekoa July 11, 2012 9:01 pm

  272. kama krab July 11, 2012 9:12 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

  273. kama krab July 11, 2012 9:16 pm

Oh and Uncle Rockne finally got the position he really wanted.

  274. SteveM July 11, 2012 9:47 pm

I figure that JD and RS being placed on paid leave is to protect them from them from prying and pestering by reporters and sensationalist media types that could confound the investigation. Also figure that ST can get the whole story but might be constrained while the official investigation is underway.

Would love to have a Cattle Call with him… hmmmm… there’s one already planned tomorrow night… 🙄 👿

  275. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 9:53 pm

Pretty sure from the pictures I have seen that Rockne is the most physically imposing AD in the MWC. Always good to have that during negotiations and such.

  276. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 9:59 pm

    SteveM,

I think it has more to do with getting key people away from the “scene of the crime” so to speak. Not saying they did anything malicious. But its probably best practice and a good idea to remove certain people from getting mixed up in the investigation.

  277. al July 11, 2012 10:14 pm

  279. nanakuli July 11, 2012 10:18 pm

What is happening to UH sports? Is JD and RS going to suffer for an honest mistake, or does ST know more than what is posted?

  280. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 10:23 pm

    nanakuli,

my guess is that regardless of what happens with the investigation, we are going to have a new sheriff in UHAD town.

as our most senior senator once told me, “perception is reality.”

It may not be fair, it most likely won’t be fair, but it is what it will be. We just have to hope for the best and that EVERYONE lands on their feet.

  281. duffer July 11, 2012 10:32 pm

    al,

    Good evening!

  282. Moocher July 11, 2012 10:57 pm

From first hand experience i can tell you that the scammers will often set up their escrow conpanies. I was lucky i did a lot of homework n research before i gave up my money. And i found out the company i was buying merchandise from was also the owner of the escrow company they directed me to.

Two things. First always research ANY escrow company. Second, YOU choose the escrow company, one you are familiar with or who is proven…not one your opposite recommends.

I hope this is not the case where money was sent to a bogus scammer owned/runned escrow company.

  283. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 11:04 pm

Do you think Rockne will make an effective AD? Just asking.

  284. John Fitzgerald Byers July 11, 2012 11:10 pm

Gigi, under Donovan it was clear the same ole same ole speed bumps existed thru mind dumbing policies that only served to hinder progress than advance it. While Donovan did good things, some things never seemed to change. Just ask the long timers at UH. Freitas on the surface is just a new face, but as story goes about his ways to get funding over to Hilo CC around the bureaucracy, the hope some have is he can do the same for the athletic department.

  285. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 11:12 pm

    gigi,

Rockne was instrumental in the MWC invitation. I don’t see why he couldn’t be an effective AD.

I wonder why Rockne wasn’t hired as AD to begin with. Why hire Frazier and Donovan? They must have been more impressive during interviews. Well, good luck to Rockne.

  287. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 11:15 pm

I wonder about a lot of things too gigi. Like what I am going to eat for breakfast tomorrow morning.

In this process other administrators at the quarry need to be evaluated as well. If Freitas said he’d listen to people’s “mana’o” well, it would be clear who needs to be shown the door.

You have snicklefritz over there living off of her name as a former player not really doing anything to advance the women’s sports and you have grease bag over there who does nothing to evolve corporate sponsorships or reaches out to the small business community to help get the word out about UH sports.

  289. John Fitzgerald Byers July 11, 2012 11:17 pm

Gigi, hires are determined by the people in charge interviewing for the position. The people at Bachman Hall today are different than the people that hired Frazier and Donovan.

  290. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 11:17 pm

    a lot of deadwood?

  291. John Fitzgerald Byers July 11, 2012 11:19 pm

Then you have car salesmen trying to nickel and dime parents that send their kids to UH summer camps for donations. Not to mention their idea of fundraising amounting to sending form letters to alums they’ve never talked to before or acknowledged for donations.

Freitas better have a plan to clean up.

  292. John Fitzgerald Byers July 11, 2012 11:19 pm

Figurative car salesmen posing as paid professional fundraisers btw.

  293. John Fitzgerald Byers July 11, 2012 11:24 pm

Gigi, yes. You have coaches up there that have to work around these certain peolpe and those people are the most visible targets in the media and public yet imagine a work environment where you are now evaluated as a fundraiser in addition to coaching duties, yet your ability to fundraise rides on rules set forth by office managers sitting behind a desk.

When hubby and I attended a UH reunion for multiple class years, we were told that we would not be hounded for donations, and they were true to their word. I was really impressed by the way the event – programs and meals – was handled, without a word urging us to donate to the school.

Since then, we have been sending donations to UH Foundation.

  296. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 11:25 pm

As far as donations are concerned, the subtle approach works best.

  297. koakane July 11, 2012 11:26 pm

    much happening with UH athletics

  298. koakane July 11, 2012 11:27 pm

    hiho

  299. John Fitzgerald Byers July 11, 2012 11:28 pm

People also dont like to be forgotten by a school after playing for it and fgiving it their all and then all of a sudden solicited in a cold sterile fashion.

  300. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 11:30 pm

    #298,

Not always. And in my experience, a more direct approach works best.

  301. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 11:30 pm

    Are you a UH alumnus?

  302. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 11:31 pm

    Are you both alumni?

  303. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 11:34 pm

I graduated in 1968, and hubby in 1972.

  304. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2012 11:35 pm

  305. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2012 11:37 pm

  307. Pomai July 12, 2012 12:33 am

Very sorry to say JD is gone and the two people in upper campus will finally get the way, and the downward spiral of UH sports begins.

  308. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 12, 2012 12:58 am

    Pomai,

You saying that Freitas can’t cut it as acting AD?

We love our Kindle Fire, but as many people have said it has some drawbacks when compared to the iPad, especially on size and power. But I’m impressed with the new specs of the Kindle Fire 2 with the 10inch screen. Some of the new specs are at kindlemad.com and I think they will be opening up pre-orders soon.
