The winners …

Wassup Doc wins the volleyball tickets.
There are some extras, so she can figure out how to distribute them.

Manoa Mist wins a $100 certificate to Tropics Bar & Grill.

D-1 also wins a $100 gift certificate to Tropics Bar & Grill.

Big Wave wanted to give away issues of Island Sports Magazines to the first two people to post at 9:09 a.m. today. The two closest are warrirorfanny2 and chopsueyboy. Big Wave will tell you how to collect your magazines.

The Warriors had a relatively light practice this morning. There were several players who suffered tweaks — Spencer Smith, Jovonte Taylor, Royce Pollard, Liko Satele — but nothing is considered to be serious. Fetaiagogo Fonoti is on the 66-player travel roster, but his availability is in question for the Washington State game. Jake Heun and Liko Satele will start at defensive end.

Happy birthday to the lovely and very humorous Myrna Tsubota, a former Aiea High runner.

Wreck is kind of busy now a days but hopefully he can come out to some of the Tsaiko events. Oh and by the way, me and wreck stopped by the T-gate after the game on Friday to say hi but never get to see you and the wife. Maybe next time.

One question on the reorg…if RL is the OC but NR and GS calls the plays, who is ultimately responsible for the offensive side of the ball? If a manager assigns an analyst to run the day to day operations of a organization, who is accountable down the road? The analyst? The manager? Why would an analyst listen to a manager if he succeeds? Seems like the person who calls the shots should be the boss.

  15. A-House September 9, 2009 11:39 am

Is Mana Lolotai hurt or did not play well on Friday so coaches made change at MLB?

  16. A-House September 9, 2009 11:41 am

A leader is ALWAYS responsible for all that happens or does not happen.

However, some chose to blame others – ah, that’s life!

How many ST-ites are going to be in Seattle? And how many are expected to be in Las Vegas? I’ve been traveling with just my iPhone to keep track of things, but I’m horrible at typing on it. So I’m out of touch on what was finally decided regarding the party before the Las Vegas game. Is it at a persons home, restaurant or another type of facility. Sorry, I know you all have had this discussed and laid out forever

SJ Bobkins— some info may be found at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2009.html

…the Seattle game group section is immediately below the Las Vegas group listing.

BTW, for those who recently announced they are attending the WA State or UNLV games, you are invitied to share your travel info/logistics and RSVPs. Please email me (link is on the page).

  22. Ronnie September 9, 2009 12:06 pm

    SJ Bobkins,

In case you’re already on this post…

The “T-gate” before the LV game will be at Cici’s Pizza
9890 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas.
The buses will be leaving from there.

There’s a Friday night K-Call at Kiku Hana
2550 S. Rainbow Blvd and W. Sahara Ave

There’s a block of 220 Tsaiko (including family/friends) sitting together plus other Tsaikos who bought game tickets through other means…

    COLT WATCHING

    http://blog.redskins.com/2009/09/09/on-the-sideline-at-practice-as-is-colt-brennan/

It’s one of the biggest cliches of sports, that a bad situation can turn into something good, but the fact that it’s a a cliche isn’t stopping Brennan from embracing it. I asked him point blank if he thought there was a chance this injury and subsequent seemingly-lost season might work out to his benefit, and he looked at me like it was the most obvious question he’d ever heard.

“Hell yeah, man,” he said. “I can’t remember a situation in my life when something like this has happened that it HASN’T turned out to be something great. You know, so many negative things have happened in my life where I’ve just kind of kept my nose to the grindstone and just worked through it, and before I know it I’m sittin’ in a situation a couple of years later going, ‘Wow, could you imagine going from where I was to where I am now,’ and I hope this is the same exact thing. That’s just one more thing to work for, one more thing that’s kinda given me some enthusiasm, like, ‘Imagine the reward that could be waiting for you after this adversity you’re facing.’

I think Heun is going to go ballistic. Somehow this man looks like he has pent up rage. If controlled and unleashed, I think we’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. He’ll make his share of mistakes, but I believe he’ll open some eyes.

This game will also show us if CM’s desire to have speed shows up. Watching FSU and the “U” play, one could see speed.

In a past blog Jason responded to my inquiry about why UH does not accept $1M pay day to be a sacrificial lamb to someone willing to pay to have us. Garret asked the same thing when speaking to the WSU $300k withdrawal.

True, JD said, “because I said I will not do that”. but if balancing a budget mired in red ink for the next couple of years is a pressing matter, and someone is willing to pay, and our kids will “play anyone anywhere”, and it helps recruiting, why don’t we do it? What does JD know that I (we) don’t with regard to the matter.

Did someone post that Coach Mack said 5 players are very close to committing.

Are they waiting for the results of the “road” games and determine their chances of playing earlier if they commited to a BCS team?

Good performances on the “road” will help recruiting!!!

    Buffoman-
I agree with you. I was wondering when he would make that move. Having seen him in practice, I can tell you that your description of him is dead on. It’ll be great to see him the rotation at DE.

  35. lava September 9, 2009 1:20 pm

I agree with you guyz on Huen, he’s ready to tear it up. Just one thing though, he ain’t ready to go play after play after play, so they betta rotate or else his productivity is going to drop as the game wears on.

I love soccer and football is new to me and I think
Coach Greg McMackin is a nice guy.
On another website, they say mean things about him that I dont really understand. They say, that his ball of yarn is unravelling at Manoa. What does that mean in the context of football vernacular?

  77. Stretch September 9, 2009 4:14 pm

Too lazy to look back through the posts but does anyone know if there is any type of “White Out” or anything going on for the next two road games?? I want to make sure I pack the right stuff.

I would think at UNLV, a “White Out” would be effective since I am thinking more than half of the people at the game will be cheering for the Warriors

  78. LK September 9, 2009 4:38 pm

    Stretch,

Just remember the extra underwear in your carry on 🙂

  79. Slugger September 9, 2009 4:38 pm

    Stretch,

You could call Don Weir & ask him what the “word” (color) is.

Just don’t wear Red, since all 3 opponents have red in their colors.

Good point, Stretch: If people are packing for 2 games in a row, you have to know what to wear now.

Do not get caught polluting the waterways if you rinse things out.

  82. madeinhawaii September 9, 2009 5:08 pm

With all that swine flu going around, might be wise to wear a surgical mask to the game and maybe even use color markers to color em up.

  83. Stretch September 9, 2009 5:13 pm

With 220 Tsaikos strong, I bet it would look pretty cool to have a “White Out” Section.

  84. wafan September 9, 2009 5:25 pm

    mih . . .

Good point about the piggy flu albeit the actual virus would be able to pass relatively easily through the masks’ mesh.

I am looking for hand sanitizer instead. Especially after touching handles, counters, etc. Maybe baby wipes would be better since they pack smaller and can be taken in a pocket.

  85. Maverick September 9, 2009 5:29 pm

  88. NYUH September 9, 2009 5:42 pm

“We did not come here to fear the future. We came here to shape it.”

President’s advice relevant to the Warriors road trip as well.

  89. Kazz (12 more for Coach Shoji) September 9, 2009 6:37 pm

Just popped in on the Call The Coach with Dave Shoji in time to hear that he’s expecting:

-A MB like Amber Kaufman to sign.

-Another setter from Cali to sign. Shoji says she’s like Mafua is size. Coach says fans will like her.

    -A 6’2″ outside hitter commitment.

-A 6’3″ outsidder hitter visiting UH this weekend.

  90. madeinhawaii September 9, 2009 6:37 pm

    Wafan…

Hand sanitizer? Put some vodka in a spray bottle. Works as well as just about any hand sanitizer. Many just use ethyl alcohol and peg 980 gel.

  91. Kazz (12 more for Coach Shoji) September 9, 2009 6:40 pm

    ***…like Mafua IN size.***

  92. TYaiea September 9, 2009 6:40 pm

at the 07 uh/unlv game the uh section, bleachers on the uh side, were all green. This is because of the big group that went via panda travel were supplied the commemorative t shirt. I checked their web site and for 2009 package they include a t-shirt and encourage them to wear it “sea of green,” so the uh side is gonna be all green. I love soccer and football is new to me and I think
Coach Greg McMackin is a nice guy.
On another website, they say mean things about him that I dont really understand. They say, that his ball of yarn is unravelling at Manoa. What does that mean in the context of football vernacular?

They think Coach Mack is losing it and they would love to see him out of a job.

    That’s all.

I remember when people wanted Coach June Jones fired after the 2005 5-7 run.

Yeah yeah yeah… it’s not the same, but deep down it is for those with the torches and pitchforks. 🙄

    Wafan…

Hand sanitizer? Put some vodka in a spray bottle. Works as well as just about any hand sanitizer. Many just use ethyl alcohol and peg 980 gel.

Now, if we mix the vodka with cranberrry juice or with RedBull, would this offset it’s antibacterial properties? 😉

Wow! Win some tickeepoos. Stephen just called from the airport. I’m picking up the tickets tomorrow from Wena.

I understand that there are extras for all three nights. As soon as I find out wassup, I’ll post something here in case some folks here would like to go to one of the matches.

From yesterday’s blog: We would appreciate any recommendations for a place to watch Saturday’s football game and to eat lunch which is no more than a five-minute drive to the campus as soon as the game ends.

DrDoc has to limit his sodium intake to no more than 1500 mgs per day which eliminates most ethnic foods. The dietician who worked with him before he was released from the hospital says that the average plate lunch with prepared meats or fish plus namasu, fried rice and macaroni salad contains close to 7000 mgs. of sodium. Actually, Mexican and Filipino food can be even worse when it comes to fat as well as sodium. Am surprised that the streets of Honolulu aren’t lined with guys who’ve keeled over from strokes & heart attacks.

JM2375 – I stopped off at the Varsity Grill the other day and wasn’t that impressed with what I saw. It’s first and last a bar. I couldn’t even find a menu lying around. Maybe we’ll have to eat at someplace like Big City Diner in Ward Center or Murphy’s and then head on over to Club Genji at halftime.

    Sounds good. See you!

    WDoc,

Tough one there about finding a place for DrDoc. Most places that will be showing the game would be of the “bar” variety and “low-sodium” is not what you’d ever expect to see there.

FWIW, there is a Big City Diner on Waialae which may be a little closer to UH than Ward Ave.

    For our socal tsaikos

    SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA–SEPTEMBER 4, 2009– United, Virgin
America and other airlines have stepped up competition for
fall and winter travel by slashing fares on a wide range of
flights from L.A., San Diego and Orange County.

Several new sales were recently launched, driving some
prices to yearly lows. Fares now start at just $49 each way
    for travel into December.

Among the sale fares from Southern California (each way):
    – San Diego-San Francisco … $49
    – Los Angeles-Denver … $59
    – Long Beach-Seattle … $69
    – Ontario-Tampa … $71
    – Burbank-Charlotte … $79
    – Orange County-Washington, D.C. … $89
    – San Diego-Jacksonville … $89
    – Los Angeles-West Palm Beach … $88
    – Burbank-Orlando … $94
    – Los Angeles-Minneapolis … $99

Kazz check out volley talk blog

  150. Kazz (12 more for Coach Shoji) September 9, 2009 11:27 pm

    Ralph or Al,

Ever heard of this gal at Lakewood HS, they play in the same league as Uiato’s CalPolyTech.

Her name is Meagan Moenoa, another setter. Her name popped up on volleyball message boards earlier in the year. Apparently she does know and love the UH program but may have a hard time leaving Cali.

The story goes, UH needed a 2010 setter recruit to replace Brandt, this girl Moenoa is a 2011 recruit, Mafua graduates in 2010 so Moenoa is a big target, I think.

If everything falls through and the ink dries on the paper in November, then Stephanie Brandt’s departure after this season is covered.

  151. Kazz (12 more for Coach Shoji) September 9, 2009 11:28 pm

    Ralph,

    Found it:

    http://volleytalk.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=print&thread=25581

    This one right?

  152. Ralph September 9, 2009 11:37 pm

yup, Moenoa is the taller of the two setters. Some on the blog claims she is actually a step ahead of Uiato at this stage. Only one setter starts, if they are very familiar with each other, know each other’s talent, would Moenoa decide to come to UH knowing that Uiato had one year of work at UH?

Only one setter starts, if they are very familiar with each other, know each other’s talent, would Moenoa decide to come to UH knowing that Uiato had one year of work at UH?

Hmmm… Would Leilehua QB Andrew Manley acknowledge his only D1 offer from UH and still come to Manoa knowing that while Brent Rausch would most likely start in 2010, but still had guys like Moniz, S. Austin, Cayman Shutter, David Graves, and Corey Neilsen waiting in the wings for another 3-4 years?

Well, beside the point, one part of me tells me that they (Uiato and Moenoa) must share some sort of “competitiveness” and Moenoa would like to test Uiato’s status and abilities should Moenoa eventually decide to sign with UH. The other part of me says that perhaps it maybe in Moenoa’s best interest to seek other opportunities elsewhere.

    Who knows?

Lot of questions I’d like to see answered sooner than later.

Like will Courtney Senas seek her college fortunes for Coach Coolen knowing Coolen recruited and signed Brittani Bertussi and Jessica Iwata to “solve” some issues at SS for the Wahine?
